A1: universal themes (ex. in life people struggle with problems and try to solve them), lesson to be learned
you're book is one of the summer reading book clubs I'm offering this summer for Ts! We are excited!
Theme gives context to any learning experience and provides one with purpose and direction.
A1 Good theme must align 2 objective(standard) & provide for intended outcome of game
A1: Theme *is* the story - wondering how to teach about theme (literary) thru gaming!
Theme and context makes learning meaningful!
good morning, Pam! Good to see a fellow VA educator here!
A1: Themes are important b/c they provide the framework for the game. A good theme is anything relevant to the Ss. I like pirates!
Favorite old-school game: Always loved Tetris, Zelda, and of course Mario
A1 an obvious theme would be the discipline of your subject - thinking like an historian, for example.
A1) Ss enjoy fantasy related ideas, but since I teach SS, I have been thinking of "Amazing Race" spin off ideas for next year
My favorite is Tetris, definitely Tetris. I loved how each new piece was both a challenge & an opportunity. https://t.co/QxvxYpQze4
Good morning, ! Looking forward to lurking for most of this, but Nintendo RBI Baseball let me be my heroes!
Yes! Provides outcomes and helps ensure we are meeting learning objectives.
Hi
Carl from Emerald Australia
A1: anything can make a great theme. You just have to be passionate about it
A1: In math, each strand could be a world with a variety of levels. Logic puzzles are great for mini-games!
A1: The story sets the stage. It's a initial hook to captivating audiences. You can create a whole new world for Ss, & you should.
Fav board games...Battleship, Twister, Clue.
Thanks, I am honored that your crew will be sailing with this summer. Great adventure awaits all. https://t.co/9ogERZBkJi
you're book is one of the summer reading book clubs I'm offering this summer for Ts! We are excited!

Also loved decathlon - old school joystick and the dreaded 1500m race at end
Nice and clean blog, Jeff. If you're in NYC doing blended learning, you should check out
Legend of Zelda was always my favorite game, easily.

Indiana, St. Joe's or Villanova. I picked Mich St to win in my bracket lol
A1: Think of lessons as an interwoven part of a bigger plot. They can serve as moments to get our bearings https://t.co/0CSOwyF6jb
A1 you can double reinforce the lesson content with a theme. Ex. Gotta rebuild your town during a Reconstruction game
A1 The theme is so important because we hook or lose our Ss at that point. A strong theme creates E and excitement! Q1
Old school favs- Clue, Othello, Tron, Uno, backgammon
A1: The theme is how you hook/engage students thinking of prodigy and how it links to a world of wizards!
A1 How explicit do visuals have to be? Is it better for the design to be "in your face" or to leave it to Ss to visualize?
A1 I use a baseball themed clssrm ss Ss buy into my class, getting Ss to want to be there is a hurdle that has to be removed
A1: Using books or movies that kids are interested in for a theme. Important because your language and structure play off the theme
A1 a story without a theme is like a book without title
A1 have a challenge in the unit, give student bonus point 4 awesome answers, add teamwork quests https://t.co/PvfT16lj7d
A1.1: theme is integral for class/course flow. It helps to make transitions smooth!
A1: Theme can give your game direction.
A1: Theme is impt because it's the universal ideas that bring us together.
A1 I think a good theme should be able to stretch across the disciplines, almost like NGSS CCCs.
Good morning--Mo from central NJ. Favorite old-school game was Rogue on a green pixilated screen!
A1: Theme is what keeps our students engaged.
Howdy! Ken in western suburb of Boston, Mass.

A1 My students created board games based on what they were learning My Board Games Coop Learning activity https://t.co/yRmeUKVdMy
Theme will bring it all together. It connects all parts of a complex plot.
A1 To capture: the sense of adventure, characters with likability and depth not to mention a killer soundtrack to add suspense
A1 Personally (i design learning experiences for adults) i like to go minimal.. theme as framework for Ss to fill-in as needed.
Hey all! Gabe from PA, 9th grade and joining in with
A1) Theme is something that's universal and can be related to almost anything beyond the game: good vs. evil, etc.
Theme crucial in establishing the hook that begins the engaged learning process
Gm! Ginger Armstrong, Elementary principal, Texas.
Joan from FL-armed Tech Director
Interesting! Will look into this idea more.
Good morning, ! Virena from NJ joining in a little late.
A1.1 Themes are what connect and unite us. Understanding theme is a foundation for developing empathy. https://t.co/U6bMVFy2rg
agreed… It allows us to paint the backdrop of the learning and the game itself.
Theme can tie it altogether and spark a bit of novelty
Good morning. Shaelynn from Iowa. How about my Panthers last night?
If the Bible tells you so...Helter Skelter in the summer swelter... https://t.co/Z45QsnmqkM
Do you believe in rock 'n' roll? Can music save your mortal soul?
Good Morning
Joel from Harrisburg PA, Technology & Innovation Lab teacher & avid gamer
Hi, I saw where someone shared your new BrokeTeacher stuff on Facebook yesterday!
A1: theme is a common "ground" for collaboration and conversation, Ss challenge each other and support their claims w/ evidence
A1.1 a theme for my course could be The Jungle
A1: Theme is where the true learning, lessons, & ultimate transfer is embedded in all stories & games.
love the idea of not revealing it all at the start.
some students need some boundaries of they go off on tangents that can be hard to pull them back in
A1) Really enjoying games and themes. Caring some from subject to subjects.
A1: Themes keep the lesson aligned with Ss outcomes
A1: Abstract concepts are good - a quest or player-driven resolution is good. Ideally, this is a time to learn new skills/hacks
A1: good theme makes a connection to the Ss interests. Gamified PD for Ts w/ a camp theme (unit 1: pack for camp= tech supplies)
A1: The theme sets the stage in developing the context for the learning process.
A1 -sort of. I like to think KerPLUNK! is a game leaders should think when helping people remove things from plate w/out disaster
A1 It's like many are saying, themes are a framework for Ss to hang their stories (learning made visible) on for manipulation.
In algebra I use games and themes that involve slaying the evil x and rescuing numbers over the = sign moat
A1 Theme is so important because it can either limit your audience or appeal to a larger one! Gender typing is huge with theme!
A1. Themes are important b/c it is the quick few words that attract ppl to courses/units. Same applies to themes of lessons.
Story sets the theme and captures imagination. Encourages the player to connect
Everybody craves this level of engagement! Imagine a whole new way to pd for teachers as well.
A1: Theme provides context for our stories and allows us and our students to relate to them on a personal level.
A1 Fav old school games-Risk, Battleship, Scrabble (and I have to say Mousetrap)
Yes, themes help us transfer ideas and understanding.
Sandi from NJ. Chief Tech Officer GM all!
A1: Designing a new 'world' that brings change to the challenges of today's world.
Morning , Quinn Rollins, Salt Lake City. History teacher, school district curriculum guy too. It's 5:42 AM and I'm up. So hi.
Analogy du jour - Explicitness:Gamer's Eye::Beauty:Beholder's eye. Matter of taste for game designer/player? Try both?
A1.1 A theme gives Ss a framework for thinking about how their own ideas could fit into or expand the game
A1: I would love to see someone do a hacker theme, or Western… Just think it would be cool.
Incorporate choice of path, choice of tools, and chances for "play again"
Don't most video games follow the "somebody wanted something, but..." literary framework? Seems theme enough to me.
Tetris for me too...I was addicted!!
cool! There are ten pathways to become a green flag eco-school no matter if you're elem, MS or HS
morning Joel! I just drove past Harrisburg yesterday!
A1. Use themes that draw Ss into lives, skills, or situations of the standards they are studying.
A1: theme can connect our curriculum to gaming & allow our Ss to see the parallels between learning & having fun gaming
I'm on spring break, and spent my first night (& now morning) planning ELA gamification for 3rd Tri.
A1) Theme hooks our students into playing, brings interest, anything hero based, save princess or save world, good vs evil
great point about gender, choice of theme should be inclusive
. I hear that. My 11-year-old is twisting and turning his Rubick's cube like mad in the other room!
You know me! Love a good challenge! LOL
Q2 coming in a minute on do you think you can hold your breath that long?
A1 the theme tells the player why they are playing the game
A1: I'm thinking if I use essential Qs effectively, then theme of a game should be tied to those Qs.
Yes, this! Couldn't have said it any better. https://t.co/a70l0fAgf3
A1: theme is a common "ground" for collaboration and conversation, Ss challenge each other and support their claims w/ evidence
Context! That's the word I was looking for well said.
How cool. Shep is so lovely, especially the painted cows
Agree! Although sometimes tangents price interesting side journeys :) https://t.co/lbubV9EHvH
some students need some boundaries of they go off on tangents that can be hard to pull them back in
A1:The theme should be personalized to that student. I prefer Pacman, but someone may prefer Knock Out theme.
Love this! Will have to use w my sixth graders. G'day Carl!
the Upton Sinclair book? I think a detective theme could fit well there
A1.1 at my school we use simulations, and kids then write about what they learned after based on overarching question.
Love this… Thanks for sharing
my favorite game was tiddlywinks, CLUE, and water battlewship. Wow, no computers involved there! kicked butt at CLUE!
I love this idea! Great connection for adventure-seeking Ss!
A1: Favorite games: Minecraft, Plague Inc., etc.
How would you describe true gamification to someone who only uses games as a fun academic practice? Curious novice here.
Morning! Todd middle school Ss teacher from Edison nj. Love !!
Haven't played in a while...going to have to work on that. ;)
Indeed! My husband must have a photo of every single one!
Theme provides a first-person account and access point curriculum and learning experiences.
A1) We us the theme as a hook (pun intended) to keep students excited and focus throughout the unit
A1.1: Stories are the context through which everything has meaning. Our 1st lessons come through story. Our lives are a story.
Spoken like a true pirate. I hope you do take a little break here and there.
A1 Theme is like the Love Boat. There were individual stories every week but it was connected by overarching story of the crew
A1: A new 'world' theme that brings change to the challenges of today's world.
Morning, Teresa. Happy to see you this morning. :)
I think your answer really shows an understanding of theme, well put.
Good point. Almost like Ss visualizing how they can make the game better or add components for learning
Q2: Challenges are what games and schools are all about… Lets make the later a bit more engaging… https://t.co/OpsMjyKEJE
A1: Has anyone turned World Geography course into Amazing Race style interdisciplinary unit? Looking for ideas.
That's plot in a nutshell!
def not for me! I'm done at about 15 seconds lol
chatting gaming 2 learn right now on
I agree but I am talking about being way off the reservation
It's like a choose-your-own-adventure book...what would I do if...authentic learning opportunities bring in student empathy.
A1: Themes allow for connections and lead to great discussions
ummm... could be a theme...
Morning, April. Happy Saturday to you. :)
Yes! Essential Questions based on the key standards in the unit.
Hahaha great analogy Kevin! ...and there will be That One Student Who's Charo.
I know:) Was going to stay off the radar on this project, but got outed like . So, it's me. (cc )
Everyone brings something to the experience. I think it gets down to do we want Ss to react to or immerse in?
. What's your favorite gaming theme? Any themes you habitually return to?
Good morning connected educators. Just checking in for a great convo! Very excited about he topic of gamification of learning.
Wow, I get it - and you have to be of a certain age to get that reference!
we come and go but is a fav of mine :)
Did I get any Matera points for that answer?
I also wear a bad hat and carry an umbrella and rubbish bin lid claiming I am Sir Mathsalot
A1: Excited to use Ss excitement for rdg/sci-fi/Divergent series as gamification theme. W/in each class, guilds will be factions.
A1.1 a them for my course could also be The Prison Break
A1 fir me the theme of hero's journey is powerful - I like the new interactive fiction game s fir that.
A2. Give them a quest or two. Make an epic adventure. Disguising the villainous standards within.
A1.1 Mixing up whether the theme or structure is more competitive vs. teambuilding could be important. https://t.co/VsBlaqr5TG
I totally agree, this will stir up curiosity
great exercise! Ss writing to explain what was comprehended
THAT WOULD BE SWEET! way to think up a new theme…
A1: Favorite game is Portal & Portal 2 & A1.1: The theme has to be the standard groundwork for the rest of the game.
A2) Build in badges to assignments as well as completion rates or times not necessarily scores.
Good morning ! I'm joining from West Michigan where I teach hs Eng. My fave gamify educators are &
A2 often we make assignments too easy. Too within reach on the first try. Let them have to work harder for it, require leveling up
A2 you've got to find that state of flow. Give them challenges but success. Success will motivate through challenges
A2 We're hosting our 1st Innovation Faire; Ss must find/anticipate a problem & vet solutions. Their imagination is soaring.
Question: If you team with another teacher, is it better if both teams have same theme or different ones?
during chunking of lesson, games can be designed as a form of assessment
A2: teach grit- improvise, adapt, overcome and they're bound to learn how to get things done https://t.co/AeyktZNq1B
Q2: Challenges are what games and schools are all about… Lets make the later a bit more engaging… https://t.co/OpsMjyKEJE
A2: If we use game design we can allow students to self-differentiate & choose to complete more challenging tasks with rewards
A2: No experience, but I see the opportunity to bring the "leveling up" concept into mastery based learning and de-tracked schools.
A2: Tasks should have different options, outcomes, or paths that SS can follow.
Good morning all! Greg- 2nd grade, Maryland. Ready to learn!
two great ones. I love and am presenting with him at
A2: Students love to win games. When you make your class into a game, students want to learn so they can be the winner.
A2 if the tasks are worthwhile and engaging, they'll keep pushing until they get it .They do it in video games daily.
slaying, rescuing, dragons. I teach boys
Sometimes I get into that space.
I blame my typing on March Madness bleariness 😀
A1: Themes of exploration, hope, creating, adventure, environmental preservation.
That question makes me equate reacting w/creating and immersing w/consuming. If that's the choice, I'd favor former.
Good morning, sorry I'm joining a bit late.
A2 in my games I always make sure they have some easier locks to open to experience success before challenges
Makes it so easy for kiddos to understand story arc, conflict. My Ss wrote a 4-act play after this lesson!
A2: provide less modeling, "giving" of information and fewer expectations which allows them freedom to learn
A2 My Social Studies students were challenged when I asked What if.... questions. Here's one I worked on https://t.co/IH8BJjaCj7
A2: When you lose a game, you've learned a lesson & get to apply this lesson to the game again=mastery learning. Focus on process!
A2 Key is to be honest to the subject and not oversimplify it for students. At the core of every discipline lie real puzzles.
A2: Lessons/activities in the classroom can be tweaked/re-phrased to become "challenges." This context is more motivating for Ss.
A2: I like the idea that a challenge can be a collaborative goal- one for all and all for each other. We can all escape if...
A2: I think this is where differentiation plays a big role. All Ss need to be challenged where they are so growth can occur.
A1: Theme is important, and adding a social/interactive component takes it a step further.
A2 Huge plus to gaming is that Ss fail/die but come right back for more. In classroom they want to quit. Need 2 transfer spirit
totally, and they may be able to improve a game in a way that Ts never imagined :)
A2: giving more ownership of their learning to THEM
do Cadaco's All-Star Baseball and Bas-Ket count? B/c they were totally awesome
Good morning from MI! Still drying my tears for MSU...
A2: Allow more opportunities for Ss to work as teams
Good morning so are we going to on soon
A2 problem based and investigative learning found in stem
A2: Everyday in math class is a challenge. As we master each skill it moves us to a new level with diff challenges.
A2: Pose a challenge and let students uncover the answer- support risk-taking and let Ss attempt challenges over and over
A2: I'm curious if there are districts that gamify pd for teachers. Badging system?
A1 Make the dots connect for Ss, make learning relevant, use real world examples, step in their shoes.
A2: Activities and stations that provide a codes or clues that lead to some sort on challenge at the end of the game.
A2: Choose your own adventure assignments… At bottom give several options & links to other GDocs… Paths produce big differences
Interesting... The downside of competition??? On my! , how do we avoid this? Particularly for girls? https://t.co/BypR83VmM0
A1.1 Mixing up whether the theme or structure is more competitive vs. teambuilding could be important. https://t.co/VsBlaqr5TG
"Conceptualizing a game through imagination and creativity is the 1st part of the creation process." https://t.co/40NUVkkiax
Good morning , Margaret from WV. March Madness is a great game platform for game theme is classrooms Math thru Social Studies.
A2: Start by changing our vocab with Ss- stop saying activity start saying challenge. Challenges should provide voice/choice
A2 allow for resets and failures. It's about finishing the boss not how long to get there https://t.co/0FWKMGu2jy
Q2: Challenges are what games and schools are all about… Lets make the later a bit more engaging… https://t.co/OpsMjyKEJE
Do you have your storyline already? Curious to know what theme you are going with here.
A2: Using Kahoot or a points system in your class for behavior. Ss get point if well behaved. T gets point if Ss are not behaved.
We talk about this in math ALL THE TIME! Are there different ways to solve? Are they all equally correct? Evidence?
A2: Welcome/encourage student voice and involvement in the creation of tasks.
A2: Students have repeated attempts to constantly try again.
A2: Game play teaches the iterative process...one learns, prototypes, & tests. If the prototype doesn't work...repeat the process.
A2: Increase the DOK. If we live at the recall stage, there's never the time or expectation to create and problem solve.
A2) who doesn't love friendly competition? ❤️how my Ts includq QR codes 4 sc hunts in/out the bldg Ss coll in teams to get it done!
A2: scaffolding and gradual release of responsibility
I know you must have a resource page for gamification. Can you share it?
definitely! I sent Mike the link, but we need to open more slots!
A1 Theme gives focus and purpose in general. It drives the moment
A1) themes in the social studies classroom is so important! Theme of haves and haves note to discuss inequality
A2 instead of the words assignments and quizzes/tests we can use challenges and levels
A2: https://t.co/IZy7JwPpw9 gamifies Vocab with badges, levels. We piloted this year. Kids got into the competitiveness of it.
Can’t wait to have you aboard.
Yes! When they "win" (Ahem. Learn...) we all win!
yes and different levels of intricacy
wanted to do this with library standards. Imagine getting rid of grade lvls and grouping by skill lvl.
A2 My Ss compete in teams for wins & losses in day to day activities. It serves as a motivator as they try to "win the pennant"
A2: There are variations of "rigor", so differentiation is key!
A2: If Ss can see mastering skills that will take them to a new level it will help them see beyond the challenge in front of them
A2: Create mysteries to be solved
A2 Develop levels that students need to achieve. Competition among students. Who can get there first? https://t.co/AA1C6dT4Lk
Q2: Challenges are what games and schools are all about… Lets make the later a bit more engaging… https://t.co/OpsMjyKEJE
Say more. Working on our PD plan as we speak.
I am interested in doing as well for next year. I teach 6th grade World Geography & ELA. Seems a good fit
A2 : I also encourage them to share challenges faced at the process level rather than just present the finished product
A2: turns his class into academic golf completion each trimester. Running score. Sections compete against each other.
A2: Authentic audiences and real world connections help students see the broader application.
I believe and were doing something with this. Ladies?
I use Cram, but I haven't tried that. I'll have to check it out!
I know many tech coordinators have done flipped learning approach to PD, wouldn't be too hard to move to gamifying it.
. Yes! A well-designed game must provide early, easy, regular rewards--and promise more comes w/greater mastery.
A1: We just reviewed parts of a plot this week. The story/character games would be great for that.
I like going with the latter/ladder. React = stuff coming at learner. Immerse = part of the story to lose oneself in
We have to support risk-taking! All human advancement is based upon an individual's ability to leap into the unknown.
Project-based learning and STEM possess many of the same attributes that make gaming popular.
Morning Margaret! March Madness is a great model -- kids AND adults are engaged by it.
A2 I'm reading in this book by somebody where "gamification has the power to transform the way we teach and the way we learn"..
You are thinking like a game designer… Which, I think we should do more of… Game designers focus on user experience…
Making a experience is key & will engage girls, too.
Ss actually hate when we do that! Many crave the challenge!
A2: By making tasks formative and reflective, disconnected from grades or a high stakes, pass/fail mindset. https://t.co/xkHUuJYYno
Q2: Challenges are what games and schools are all about… Lets make the later a bit more engaging… https://t.co/OpsMjyKEJE
A2. We need to turn some tasks in competitions. Since Ss are competitive, they will compete and learn simultaneously!
A2) Each task should be built upon, level up, different outcomes based on different decisions, different risks involved
You are too funny Nathan!
are awesome gamification contacts!
Yup! make sure to build & *DESIGN* quick feedback models (other Ss, Ts, Ps, even apps, etc) so they know what next to do
Yes, this! Real challenges require diversity of skills & teamwork.
you get a Matera point for that answer
A2: Establish an environment of questioning/answeringthat reaches starts at lower level and reaches the highest
A2: Japans Ts start with a problem that Ss can’t answer and allows them to explore diff ways to answer https://t.co/0GsO7gtLag
Guess who was up at 5 and fell back asleep
Gamebased learning ttp://huff.to/1RqQhQG
A2: My son likes the games with the free roaming worlds - not where you are forced only in one direction!
Oh yeah... We are kinda full for this season.
A2: Using virtual reality devices to explore Ex. Google Cardboard
Ss love . And as I walk around and ask questions the games are centered on completing a task.
absolutely. If it's framed right, they'll do the same in class.
I get to see this in action. Great stuff! https://t.co/Jsojs6sIVu
A2 My Ss compete in teams for wins & losses in day to day activities. It serves as a motivator as they try to "win the pennant"
A2: "Choose your own [learning] adventure" becomes type of learning that harnesses the user interest & available tech/res?
I LOVED this game. Coleco also had a car racing game that I was addicted to.
Good morning! Hope you are feeling better!
Great insight into gamifiication in the classroom. Ss need to understand hard work pays off. https://t.co/2NWyuiozw6
. Yes! A well-designed game must provide early, easy, regular rewards--and promise more comes w/greater mastery.
Love this answer…. We need to have students in a risk rich environment that is devoiced from pass fail mindset.
I love this idea. Students aren't just learning...they are leveling up!
A2. Make sure the task open for multiple answers; praise small wins of Ss; let them collaborate! https://t.co/MLrNCWePbf
Q2: Challenges are what games and schools are all about… Lets make the later a bit more engaging… https://t.co/OpsMjyKEJE
A2: Have quests built in and if they fail build in the ability to respawn. Ss earn XP or power ups
A2 Show Ss how to ponder, wonder, & enjoy processing thru challenges together.
A2 So if we're aiming to transform the learning experience tasks might be "adventures"? Language matters, too methinks.
Retakes/revisions are cornerstone of this idea. Why do we struggle with allowing retakes?
A2: make them clear stages of progress, one won't happen until the task is completed with appropriate points needed
A2: Learning should be fun, engaging and promote active learning and problem solving-Make it a game!
Our read aloud is "Under The Egg" an awesome mystery that is getting my Ss thinking really creatively about the whodunit.
Love that idea. What do we do with kids who don't want to level up?
It is but it is very rewarding…
I'm reading that book too! I wonder who it is?
A2) love competition! Have Ss create games for other Ss to compete in. Next week we are doing a live Oregon trail game!
A2: Students love review games (Kahoot, group jeopardy, scavenger hunts), science/physics challenges & problem solving are engaging
Just need a story line. doesn't even need to be epic.
A2: Ss should gain exp for the amount of assessments & assignments done in the classroom and "Lvl up" with new activities
A2 reframing work for our Ss is key.. It is how we should approach life events. Each chalky sets us up for our next move. Play well
Divergent, capitalizing on release of Allegiant. All 5 factions as guilds. Goal-initiation, avoid becoming factionless.
I love this concept-- esp as a math teacher. They need to master content-- and need to be motivated to do so!
A2 More sideline achievements. And get over excited and over-react a lot.
A2: I love playing the harder levels in co-op mode!
Q3 coming up in 1 minute… Do you think you could only type with your left hand till then?
A2: Instead of relying on textbook, collaborate with colleagues to build meaningful, authentic tasks that challenge thinking of Ss.
A2 The "greater" game atmosphere is a learning tool as well as students strategize , not just the curriculum being learned.
A2 Make sure that your students have lots of "lives."
A2:Establish an environment where students are creating activities that challenge each other, student-centered
A2 Having SS solve complex problems through -which can be messy and loud- SS cooperate to complete an authentic task.
Like an updated Choose Your Own Adventure book!
A2 Lucky that my major curriculum resource is called "GamePlan" for music. Responsive Classroom books have fantastic games
Shucks. You missed my tweet about the CCCs!
A2It boils down to relevance- the work Ss do needs to solve issues NOW. Stop leaving the application of the learning for the future
I am with you - I taught math back in the day, and wished I would have done it more like game play!
A2: I don't provide answers, I provide questions to increase their thinking
Sorry , gotta get moving! Busy day ahead. Thanks for a great boost this morning. Don't forget to vote! https://t.co/93NZiYptwE
Morning ! Chiming in a bit before spending the day in a grad class that I'm rather keen on taking: school change
Curious in the topic but not sure much to share may just lurk
A2) Seating, finding "clues"/ new information on concepts w/o being assigned (self-motivation), when SS evidence of habits of mind
Thanks for the kind words and the daily support Brad!
A2 ditch grading as arbitrator of one shot right/wrong learning - gaming allows lots of retries 2 get 2 learning proficiency
I have been recently very interested in collaborative games that ask gamers to work together to meet challenges.
exactly!! Although sometimes I feel this a bit easier said than done in some subjects
Would love to hear and see more about this!
A2. investment of time in designing learning critical ~ teacher expertise in levelling up challenge sets learners free +hooks them
Give them traditional work, negative points, negative class points, We already have that problem. Gaming won't change
Well said Use the opportunity to share the rules of fair play & healthy competition as well. https://t.co/c6XTRPTScU
A2: Authentic audiences and real world connections help students see the broader application.
A2: when my students review vocabulary on Quizlet with the offered games they always want to beat my time!
A2: setting up class competitions at this time of year in brackets - March Madness. Kids love it.
Reminds me of the framework:ask Ss unanswerable Q & give them freedom to explore, research and create solutions
Yes! Being able to iterate and reiterate, plan and replan are life skills! Useful in job, life...
Yes- answer questions with questions whenever you can! https://t.co/VZ8yqLIqU8
A2: I don't provide answers, I provide questions to increase their thinking
Could a choose your own ad game be built to promote personalized learning in a deep way,i.e around theme of protecting environment?
Good morning I hope that everyone gets 2 attend some of the wonderful events going on throughout NJ today
A2 let students take differs takes on the same event and call the quests
This is so important. When a task is relevant to real life and the student...the magic happens!
Pinging on the ol front https://t.co/UaCQLrKBLx
Good morning ! I'm joining from West Michigan where I teach hs Eng. My fave gamify educators are &
The book recommends playing games for fun! :) What games would you recommend to me? I am not a gamer.
Will say inspired me last weekend about
Exactly, we want the challenge but not like real games you can never beat. https://t.co/6iURHCgbxg
A2 you've got to find that state of flow. Give them challenges but success. Success will motivate through challenges
Ditching grading is the key to having fun at school for Ss and Ts!
Ha, I'm "old school" trying to catch up with all this new, techie stuff! :)
Same here, lurking and chiming in here and there.
would love to hear about the process. Sounds like Ts enjoyed both components?
Q2: I had Creative Writing students design and write rules for their own games. Taught them importance of precision in writing.
There's a free and a paid version.
Yes, giving kids the tools to be storytellers through is key. .
Stealing this! Hidden math/logic puzzles :) Awesome!
yes, just read a post that said instead of learning Ss are "leveling up"
What are your favorite resources for true gamification. I only use things like Kahoot, Cram, etc.
but a huge yes to defining levels of achievement for students. that's hard to do and so much more meaningful than a grade.
Right on! You're making me think about 'zone of proximal development' and taking them just beyond.
Do you want a board game or video game?
Yes and what is "it" that makes Ss do that? Why are they so willing to repeatedly "fail" in that setting and not such?
A2 Making the language fit with how Ss see the world is probably a good place to start. What exactly that looks like, no idea. :)
So many good ideas are flying through this that I will need a lot of time to peruse later!
Kids love exploration and discovery. Most handle failure better than we think. So long as failing is beginning not end.
I don't feel connected to this week's as have no video game background. GinRummy,Chess, SpaceInvaders,Monopoly ? ?
A3: I would like for students to have shown what they know in different ways on their assessments.
A3 Choice. Game outcomes can be tight, but paths to arrive may be loose and varied.
A3: let Ss help make academic decisions when appropriate, let Ss teach the class
A2 when skill practice set up as a game, failure is expected and okay. So important for learning and creativity
I do this with our makerspace; not quite "gaming," but solving a design challenge as a team. Key skill for sure.
Love how you're building in challenges to keep us engaged as we wait for the next Q. Great instruc practice.
it truly is a game changer when you start to think/build/ and instruct this way.
Oh, I'd love to know more about this idea... https://t.co/e4dcpMjXA2
A2: I'm curious if there are districts that gamify pd for teachers. Badging system?
Need to figure out what Ss into. If stds are a scaffold, individualizing should be easier. If stds are outcome - tough
Oh how I wish more schools would ditch grading. I don't see it anywhere!
Newest one our Ss love is Quizlet Live. However, Honors Ss are less enthused b/c they don't want to rely on others
In words of Einstein "keep asking the ?s " https://t.co/OJVey0C6HJ
A2: I don't provide answers, I provide questions to increase their thinking
. Yes, iteration is the key to mastery learning
A3 Let the kids help design the learning and demonstration of mastery. When kids have a stake, they perform
Sounds like my game World of Factions
It's what I'm working on now. Tiering fig language terms, and planning ways Ss will complete challenges to earn terms.
A2 Let kids use tools to create and make their own games like scratch -
A3: 1/2 Being allowed to eat, drink and use the facilities as and when needed would be a great start for most students and teachers
A2. I asked my Ts to create assignment competitions leaderboards. We have transformed HW activity completion b/c of leaderboards.
Love the results of the magic happening! 😊
The same happens when we use no matter the age group
Sometimes catering to the lowest common denominator, making sure we reach every child...missing the Ss who need more.
Absolutely! And, they don't see it as failure anyway.
Interesting! thanks for the tip! Will spread the word with my teachers.
Thanks. Check out if you haven’t it is filled with things you could do in your class.
Or who can get there best? Most points, most coins, most XP? Shoot for thorough as much as or more than fast?
Special Needs teacher Corning NY. Needing some ideas to engage them for a few more months. Little experience with gaming.
yep formative assessment at best! We must step out into this territory. https://t.co/Ve75OxqC2Y
during chunking of lesson, games can be designed as a form of assessment
A3: provide different "assessments" to monitor their learning, choice for them
A3) Have had task where students could choose their own adventure (method/assignment) based on their strengths. Lots of planning
A2: Tiered assignments...ALWAYS A NEXT ADENTURE. Kids are CURIOUS-take advantage of that & avoid the "I'm done" syndrome.
I'm a little confused myself. I guess I use games to learn, but not true gamification.
Thank you for sparking some new ideas but have to bow out early today. Headed back into office to catch up.
You have to play Plague Inc. by It allows gamers to witness the importance of global healthcare.
A3: provide menu of options for demonstration of mastery.
A3: Provide Ss with their data and then let them take control over how to get to the next level.
. Gaming demands some fun at every level, but learning makes fun scale! A lesson that transcends the game & the class.
Will say ans I know agrees, I can present any assessment in and Ss engage immediately
Good idea - language used in class should also be authentic
You never played Legend of Zelda or Mike Tyson's Punchout on Nintendo? Lol
Like multiple lives in the game, rt? How do we get kids to connect that with the interation process? https://t.co/tQlgOcNuVE
Yes! Being able to iterate and reiterate, plan and replan are life skills! Useful in job, life...
Personalization...to the greatest extent possible.
This. Is. Epic. And it could be applied "Masters" style
A3: As the teacher, you must be willing to lose control. A little. Scary! 😱
I can only control my 4 walls, but hope my no-grades philosophy seeps under the door & around the school.
A2 has Ss building interactive fiction games- Ss think about choices & outcomes = powerful https://t.co/yzIXMzDk0w
Q2: Challenges are what games and schools are all about… Lets make the later a bit more engaging… https://t.co/OpsMjyKEJE
I have several task that are designed to fail to make sure they fail so we can discuss what to do.
A3: Students need to be in charge of their own learning. If they learn better with peers or by themselves or with the teacher -
A3: 2/2 I love that I can learn to create my own tools in Minecraft. Gives feeling of total control through mastery, not cheats.
This is why Choose Your Own Adventure books are so popular! Selecting your own path builds ownership. https://t.co/31cOZiyM0w
A3: Allow for book choice!
Absolutely. A real-world challenge combined w collaboration makes learning come to life & engages students.
I have found that sometimes "honors" students have learned the rules of traditional schooling too well.
A3: Student centered learning! As often as possible present situations where students call me use inquiry to create knowledge.
Morning, A3: Choose your own adventure can work across many subjects. Create a culminating assignment with choices.
A3: Teaching a new grade level next year. Excited for my students and I to brainstorm together to hit some of the tech. standards
A3: I'm interpreting agency as choice- project based learning, learning centers, makerspaces, differentiated learning
What board game recommendations do you have? Would love to hear!
A3 Power Hour is an incredible way for SS to have choice in their learning!!!!
Video. That I can play on my phone. Just to experience it. LOL
A3 PBL is great for sparking agency within Ss- trust that they are thinkers and prob solvers and present them with a prob/challenge
A3: Ss need choice! Each choice leads them down a unique path, at the end, Ss can see how their choices influenced the outcome
Not a huge gamer myself, but to me is more about learning structure and mindset than the actual games.
A2: I enjoy finding problems in TV commercials. Recent one from eInsurance: How much is a "ton of dollars"? ( Gr 5 )
What were the badges geared towards and what pd did you focus on?
A3 we can give choice as to the types of challenges (assignments) they can complete to get to the end of the level (assessment)
A3: Give them power over their assignments, create a game, create test, create a rap/song over their learning
We have so much fun! Ss feel tricked into learning and some Ps have said they wish math was like my class long ago
Agreed! But some of us compete against ourselves as much as competing against others.
A2 reframing work for our Ss is key. Its how we should approach life events Each challenge sets us up for our next move. Play well
When kids see the work as their own, they excel. When kids see the work as "teacher work", they don't care as much
Interested to hear more about it. Colleague had great idea to engage in Soc seminars w/traits of factions.
A3 Individual student choice, but also the idea of group choice/destiny/teamwork. gets into some of that group dynamic
So many… I run a game club and camp… Have collected a lot. For what age and how many Ss
A3 Choice and voice! Choice and voice! Choice and voice! Choice and voice! Choice and voice! Choice and voice! Choice and voice!
We could create our own gamification. All open-ended activities.
3rd gr tcher creates lit curricula gaming inside "kids teach me how to do ___" student as tcher in gaming
Yes. Tchrs need to give up reigns of the class and let students have a say in their own learning.
A3: Having point systems in class. Ss can only get points for doing positive actions and get points taken away for negative.
Agency is having control of decision making - putting Ss in the driver's seat. Choosing focus, tools used to share learning
A3: Student voice, choice, and metacognitive development all help with S agency.
A3: Ss should have ownership and be allowed to work on what projects they want to make on a unit.
Yes! Productive failure happens within gaming. Strategize and persevere! https://t.co/5hYItAi7DJ
A2 ditch grading as arbitrator of one shot right/wrong learning - gaming allows lots of retries 2 get 2 learning proficiency
All Ts I know are bound to the school and district grading policy.
How much does a ton of dollars weigh? How many dollars are in a ton of them?
A3: Ss have agency over context, theme, scenario. Work out the skills you want them to achieve and let them imagine the rest
Reality is Broken is a great gateway book into the mindset
Angry Birds, Clash of Clans would give you a mountain of ideas if you take notes and are a good student ;)
A3) Empowering S leaders: an awesome way to establish agency and provide ownership opps for Ss to have voice, choice, & steer ship
A3 Personal learning plans, choose your own standard to master, ... These have worked for my Ss (and me!).
How do you create your own gamification? Do you use a certain platform?
Get kids making stuff! Rube Goldberg challenges are great for that! Do, I do, upgrade
Absolutely! Time to blend the strong ideas of and with
Back to the office, wow! You really are !
Q3 is more helpful | I can play with this analogy better 😌👾🎰
A3: It's all about choices and who and where they want to be at the end of the school year.
A3: I believe in giving students options in exploration, they will take ownership of their learning.
it's huge isn't it. thanks for sharing this image!
There is a book about that....I forget the name.....exact topic.
A2 is there any challenges for this chat
random.... Thumbs you suck
Incredible amount of problem solving and complex decision making!!
I mean sure, we have to assess and send report cards home, but we don't live and die by them.
Give them CHOICE in manner or route. They shouldn't automatically loose bc they choose a different route https://t.co/7g3hzzGqNu
A memory is of a student teaching another student and he got it - I thought it was horrible, but who cares - he got it!
A3: S's don't have to do the same assignment to show mastery. We have to get out of this mindset.
One of the most important and effective approaches, in my book.
Thanks… As I said in the beginning Zelda was my fav.
Great idea! My Ss are rediscovering new releases of those CYOA books in our library. Will be great to capitalize on that.
Absolutely. They're also the Ss that want scan-tron test, not the on or alternate assessments
A3 Agency would b them having a feeling of success from intended outcome of the game. Relevancy supports intendend learning
well said and so important
A3: It's important in a game-based learning environment 2 demonstrate 2 students that it's okay 2 fail...it just means try again
If we started creating games in PK-2, and scaled up. beginning with 1-2 themes, embedding all content areas ...
Love the "Choose your own standard to master"- EMPOWERING https://t.co/P7eu6wgHuj
A3 Personal learning plans, choose your own standard to master, ... These have worked for my Ss (and me!).
A3: Ss should have a choice in what supplies/ apps they use to complete challenges. Can apply what they know in a variety of ways.
A3 design lessons with the beginning and end in mind, allow students to create the path from one to the other time
. Choose Your Own Adventure books are also great in that they show that life itself is a choice-based narrative.
If you love check out tomorrow night at 8pm ET when we'll talk about mental health and education.
I thought was a new thing.
Allowing for agency empowers our learners. Deeper than engagement, it is true life-long learning
A3: Ss have a choice of the path they take choice of different quests based on their strengths. Choice of items to collect
A3: Make CHOOSE Your Own Learning assignments just like Choose yOUR Own Adventure books!
Morning just lurking but wanted to share that doing a simulations with class could be used as summative/formative assessment
A question I don't think I even know the answer to - wow!
Spent hours battling my brother at Atari Baseball-Hold the joystick down and hit an automatic HR https://t.co/HJr8VlqW1v
Dina from NJ checking in from
A3:Let Ss take the lead & Ts just listen/learn from their voice, choice, & path.
absolutely! Removing that stigma allows for risk taking, critical in voice and choice
. One doesn't give agency to students. One helps students realize they already possess it.
How does this look? Where & when do you release control?
A3 : Give them the topic but let them choose the process, product & presentation mode. Reward originality. https://t.co/3mHbtKOins
A3 when kids get lots of learning choices including creating their own, they invest in own their learning
a3b IMP to model to Ss how to proceed once agency is found-show students your example of agency, Ts need to lead the way & guide Ss
Goes beyond thinking outside of box. Gets Ss ignited to love learning. Lifelong learners. Saying this 4 yrs.
A3 The best projects I've seen are Genius Hour projects where S's chose topic and share their passion.
A3 I have an “adventure path” per unit. More challenging, more creative, students opt in… Awesome to see.
I do PD in many low-performing schools, and Ts don't have much flexibility.
A3 So true! One test or question doesn't let me demonstrate all that I know. https://t.co/z0wcO3J5ud
A3: S's don't have to do the same assignment to show mastery. We have to get out of this mindset.
A3) Also so valuable to have kids be involved in creating rubrics- accountability, voice, understanding of purpose...
Helping to make time so students can engage in this way is so important!
A3) Ss take charge of their learning, self assess. risk taking, self reflect, helps them to understand how they learn best
Very interesting idea to explore! https://t.co/sNVQknaodI
A3: Make CHOOSE Your Own Learning assignments just like Choose yOUR Own Adventure books!
I think choice is huge in this because in most games you are making decisions about the best path and why.
I think it's good to be skeptical of . It takes a lot of effort to do properly.
I was hoping someone would see it that way!
A3: Give Ss the option to unlock "secret" levels or challenges by proving they master necessary material. Level up!
Be careful posting or you'll get tendongifitis.
A3: Student- centered learning! As often as possible students should use inquiry as a place to start their learning. Encourage Qs
Oh, I like that. And making the challenges achievable using more than just your own classroom hoop. Hmm. https://t.co/dqTvufD0gj
A3: Ss should have a choice in what supplies/ apps they use to complete challenges. Can apply what they know in a variety of ways.
Gamification feels like universal design for learning
A3: Give students multiple ways to demonstrate learning.
We have an extensive 20% Time program that gives students incredible agency. We honor kids choice & talents https://t.co/7fKi0C1o0y
We have to adopt a growth mindset. Through relevant learning students can meet rigorous academic goals!
with what? Does it matter?
A3 Perhaps giving Ss choice over how they show mastery of the desired standard. Some tasks rank higher than others...
Absolutely, well put! https://t.co/siYVOZFe2w
A3 when kids get lots of learning choices including creating their own, they invest in own their learning
Q4 Coming up in 1 minute… Can you rub your belly and pat your head? at the same time (I can’t) You have a minute to practice
When we first started w/ we talked a lot about choose your own adventure. I'd love to see Ss create the chapters
The good ol' personal contract can be updated for 2016 in this way!
A2: Community grows in a classroom and school with engagement. Must shifting mindset to engage students thru games
Throughout the lesson. Had to realize that I wasn't the only one Ss could learn from. Group work, 1-on-1 also
Key to problem solving is first finding the real problem. Ss tend 2 struggle with this. (as do many adults) https://t.co/LYNZumrpsb
How much does a ton of dollars weigh? How many dollars are in a ton of them?
This is so much easier to do now with technology- a learning experience for everyone!
A3: Make the learning goal and the resources known, & let students decide what to use and how to get there. https://t.co/VM6xc8I0uF
Who's learning is it anyway?
Give up control.
We are not here to block & ban
My lesson or my students learning?
S ownership allows them to be more invested in what they are trying to accomplish. https://t.co/fcIbgp67ZE
A3: Ss should have ownership and be allowed to work on what projects they want to make on a unit.
A3 Ss need 2 explore who they are and who they can become. We guide them to see possibilities https://t.co/IJvTN0nx6d
Curating the tech skills in problem solving means experimenting with tools, completely agree here Courtney https://t.co/k6kQJj6Axx
A3: Ss should have a choice in what supplies/ apps they use to complete challenges. Can apply what they know in a variety of ways.
A3 If the game culminates in a presentation to an audience of their choice it could be powerful
My Ss have loved task menus-- here's 9 ideas. Make a row to demonstrate mastery! Choose 3!
The nails that stick up always get hammered back down. I keep stirring the pot. Has to catch on some day.
I just want some examples of what it really looks like. What people use to create games.
Always great to have you lurk sent you a vox.
well said and I see what you did there… Couldn’t agree more.
Yeah... Include protocols that make them revise, edit, & reflect during the process.
A3. Explore learner aspirations+sense of belonging+point of school~through active listening > good starting point >>
What about starting with a stack of individual quests. Complete storyline to get bonus points (extra credit/grade level up)
Good point. Put aside model answers and let them explore new ways of thinking, learning & creating.
We love podcasting. I've read it described as "the future of radio" and I tend to agree
My school had a final 4 where S's voted on favorite books. The S's loved it. Wonder was the big winner.
My favorite way to c instruction. Kids teaching kids. Saw K Ss doing this in doing Hour of Code games. Excited Ss.
I was thinking about this for a Genius Hour project.....
A3) choice, choice and more choice! Let them choose their path to learning content.
A3: Game creation/design in the classroom takes agency to a new level bc Ss are in control of the game's entire universe
I run into teens who freeze because of too much choice - any suggestions?
Absolutely! Not the same assignment, method, assessment, or language... https://t.co/YUdpqs69op
A3 So true! One test or question doesn't let me demonstrate all that I know. https://t.co/z0wcO3J5ud
A3: S's don't have to do the same assignment to show mastery. We have to get out of this mindset.
Yes! Their life path isn't paved... Yet!
You can seek to control or you can seek to support, but very rarely can you do both
Thanks everyone for a fun chat. Ducking out early.
Q4: One of my favorite parts of game design… It can be challenging with out having a game of your own. https://t.co/oxSri3o9EI
love this even though it make some Ts nervous. Important to put Ss in the drivers seat
Absolutely. Hence the ? how much does a ton of dollars weigh? Should be obvious ...
If any of my group wants to join a wonderful chat...please use the hashtag . We are discussing gamification.
A4) I have implemented games & given agency to seating; if they make poor choice the gamemaster steps in and Ss has a forced move
Actually I have video game and which are based on the texts yet have interactive stories,
so right Bud - voice agency influence reside in all kids opp to use often doesn't occur in trad schling
Agreed. Lets think of fun ways we can build this in to our classes
The dogma of school. Needing to have a grade and a report card doesn't show for retake https://t.co/kQxDagL7PN
Retakes/revisions are cornerstone of this idea. Why do we struggle with allowing retakes?
Nor did I when I framed the question. To me if I know the answer, where is the adventure.
Webquests, forgot these used 2 be exciting part of using tech; lets creation be more feasible https://t.co/tJ6EYRvoBx
So true!! Redesigning thinking!!!
Move teachers from orator of knowledge to facilitator! https://t.co/cQJmRgrnOp
A3:Let Ss take the lead & Ts just listen/learn from their voice, choice, & path.
yes! Have them craft board games based on literature books
Yes. We need to provide opportunities that allow them to make an investment!
A3. Create leaderboard based on standards. Then through menus students can select desired activities to gain points on the board.
What do you do with the podcast once it's complete?
A3 The more we (teachers/designers) do for Ss the less they have to do (learning decreases).. https://t.co/Ij9WE1lNLi
I agree. It takes time to get them there but so worth the effort!
. Novel scrabble. Double points if you can prove the word connects back to your novel. Ex: river for The Giver.
Nicely put! https://t.co/lMhB4Duigs
Who's learning is it anyway?
Give up control.
We are not here to block & ban
My lesson or my students learning?
Love A3! Thoughfully-designed which shoes S's their own progress against goals is huge for !
A3: Does agency have to mean only choice in project or book? True agency is about freedom to act...no more permission for drinks?
Sounds amazing! Do you have this blogged somewhere? Did they work in pairs?
Wonderful post! Gaming isn't just for boys!
A4 Having kids make many of the decisions that go into planning the learning is a huge power-up. https://t.co/7fKi0C1o0y
Wondering: Why keep throttle at 20%? Can or does successful S-driven exploration/learning claim bigger slice of pie?
Self assessment and reflection...building metacognitive skills...ABSOLUTELY!
A4: Give them options or different ways to show their learning. Let them take learning to a different level
Did they have to choose from a predetermined set of books (having to read some from an assigned list), or was it open?
Thats v interesting - never thought of that. Audience is so important when making the sharing authentic & applicable!
If your learning organization believes that they it "gives agency" to anyone, it's incorrect. They've got it & don't need it given.
Agree. Increases learning & scary. Transfer of power 2 Ss is respectful & builds ownership in learning. https://t.co/SQp602q4DE
A3: As the teacher, you must be willing to lose control. A little. Scary! 😱
We post ours to our blogs and they are also available on iTunes
A3 A high school teacher pal of mine has her students read books and turn 'em into board games! Agency galore!
A3 Whatever we end up doing we want to avoid encouraging "learned helplessness" in students.
begin with some supports for those who struggle PBL requires some scaffolding at times
Is there a rubric of some kind that describes the components needed like theme, power ups, etc.
Good opportunity for Ss to code their own learning game with levels & all those other engaging features! https://t.co/9rTBlUKKqW
A3: Give Ss the option to unlock "secret" levels or challenges by proving they master necessary material. Level up!
Ss create service projects and complete open ended tasks (grapples). Also do lots of live simulations
I think that a lot of is done with google sites / docs. But making a game takes $$$ & time
A4 Remembering the little things. Gave a Ss a new desk yesterday and he grew five sizes.
A4: Power-ups: find out what motivates them- after accomplishing a task, build the motivator in as a power up
A3: Urban Ss must be taught how to make choices because most often their choices are limited.
Give Ss and "If you have a better way to prove..." Challenge. Ss strive to exceed perceived expectations
Question (oblige me if you can) - can gamification work for teacher education as well?
A4 Giving kids a voice but also some accountability
Enjoying the chat but got to check out. Teaching Saturday school this AM. Some of the best time teaching.
School does not support failing as apart of the process. Failing is seen as the end rather than a beginning.
Absolutely. Both and I have both transformed our classrooms to PBL learning spaces
We must ban the internet. We must ban websites. Bad things are there.
You bet! I would love to see more PD models and teacher review cycles.
A4 Differing levels of support during learning. Teach the students self-advocacy so they can seek out support when needing it.
I've dabbled with and feel like it requires commitment. but gbl can be done as and when.
As a design principle for learning experiences, realize that challenges without choices are pretty poor challenges.
I always loved the books that let you choose your own path. They started my love of reading.
Agreed, trusting Ss in the process is scary at first but very worth it in the end
#1884 Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.
https://t.co/idXFR90ALZ
A4 (great Q): "bonuses" for work that goes above and beyond. Esp work that teaches the class (and me) something new
Yes, we're rethinking this. Do you know of districts that are doing this? Would love to see examples.
We must ban BYOD. We must ban Smart Watch. Ss will do bad things.
watched design lit gaming paths inside world - I'm fascinated by possibilities https://t.co/QBCjKsCoKH
we are launching Friday! Come play with us!
How about freedom to serve? Make the community better through personal action? Present the problem & let them go
When you say making games, you mean old school boards, pieces, etc.? or online somehow?
I always run into Ts not having the amount of time needed to do this well.. this would be another option! https://t.co/2841lHOxM1
We have an extensive 20% Time program that gives students incredible agency. We honor kids choice & talents https://t.co/7fKi0C1o0y
When kids are involved in planning the learning, they learn additional, secondary skills that are essential https://t.co/7fKi0C1o0y
A4: Students could publish their work online or have an opportunity to display projects.
But so necessary and worthwhile. Trust Ss to lead where they need to go. Many Ts are unwilling to give up power.
Learned to get out of their way and make sure their experience is not limited by what I know.
A4: I sit in the audience and put them in front of room as teacher (both spur of the moment and planned)
is really a great way to spur S passion, engagement and buy-in as well. My has brought huge new interest w Ss
A4. Power ups can come n the form of rigorous bonus questions/activities requiring Ss to critically think/problem solve & gain pts.
We must step up our game. Otherwise bad things will happen. Is it up to us or is it outside of our control?
A4: Ss always like the ability to design assessment Qs. They're careful in crafting quality questions with guidance!
These can be useful, but I would argue none are transformative. It's more about doing the same stuff better.
Problem identification relies on the interplay between creative/divergent thinking & critical/convergent thinking.
Pretty cool that we have students participating on this morning https://t.co/bWyo4nBDcP
A2: Ss should gain exp for the amount of assessments & assignments done in the classroom and "Lvl up" with new activities
Check out Carole Farrington's work around academic mindsets as well. Encompasses larger family of mindsets
Last ques. critical. Be aware of signs of student boredom & detachment; choose engagement over owing lesson.
And if they don't show it the first time, give them a "reset".
Yes but everyone learning together. Many times Ss surprise me with their innovation.
teachers I know would see right through it, PD is already often viewed as a frustrating drain on time / resources.
is a great way to provide student agency. Let Ss engage with content on their terms
Having things like that helps the Ts to see Ss in a different light and better understand how they are motivated.
Might try- learning how important it is to give Creativity practice time to Ss (and myself) https://t.co/rkbxGtLwnw
A4: Power up tools is the toolbox of strategies that we give to Ss to acquire a skill.
A4: I have Ss who "got it" help other Ss who need it
if kids sit passively listening (sort of), doing worksheets, taking tests - not much to invest in
by not taking the seat as copilot- we hold Ss back. Ss create digital content all the time, we should embrace that!
A4. Free time, game time etc
Get to sit in special chair
Get to be student who takes class alpaca for walk today
It does take time but the payoff is so worth it! We compact our regular curriculum in order to make time. Huge payoff
Yes. There needs to be some choice. Ambiguity in challenge leads to creative responses!
A4: CHOICE and opportunities to collaborate...better (learning) together.
A4: My Ss use to podcast or vlog their learning...and then they share their individual pathways to understanding with me.
A barrier we have to overcome. It's part of why gaming is "scary" for Ts. Allow many paths of learning. https://t.co/rN7R7JTQaE
A3: S's don't have to do the same assignment to show mastery. We have to get out of this mindset.
A4) Such a creative way to guide instruction! Power-ups could be as simple as "earn 5 badges and u teach the next lesson"
Totally agree . Do you utilize games in your ? https://t.co/ibT7JWSuI2
is really a great way to spur S passion, engagement and buy-in as well. My has brought huge new interest w Ss
Ask a teacher, Phone a friend, Let the smart kid do one question on your math test.
Question: If you wanted to have your S's create a game, what components would be required?
Got it. So 20% time is either gateway or catchy name or both, not always reflection of actual time spent
yes and also to silent observer! We really need to get out of Ss way. They can be great innovators & leaders!
support/help is different than giving the answer.
A4: Value-add to the project by allowing more autonomy to them as a way to reward & ! https://t.co/9XMcjpxrKU
Q4: One of my favorite parts of game design… It can be challenging with out having a game of your own. https://t.co/oxSri3o9EI
A4: Though leery of a "pac man mentality," the power up resides in the autonomy not in the reaching some arrival level.
A4 Can we frame skills like reading comp, super collaboration and organization as power ups? They do give you super strength!
I'll do that! TY for the tip!!!
A4 a Second chance in assessment
A4: Power ups as motivators! I could also see powerups as a fun way to continue the learning (getting to use a fun tool in class)
Start with theme of your class, build power ups, slowly writing storyline?
I love this concept! Used this to drive student projects in Ss driven to better their world
That is a good one. I have one
A4: (1/2) I used to let my Year 7 &8 Ss choose from a range of powerups over the term depending on their progress.
Just finished the Pulleys, Ropes & Rigging chapter in Lots of great ideas in there.
They're funny b/c they will be like, "Give us a harder one!"
A4 it's simple but I let my classes eat their own snacks in class as a reward for good group behavior, reward lost if trash appears
A4: I saw a class with a spell checker. Ss would be a Ss work checker and underline miss spelling
Exactly! Support to me is more important. As a admin, I try to give tchrs support rather than control. Same for Ss.
A4 Bestest power-up I can think of is collaborating with others. Maybe it's handing a device to Ss with an unknown app to apply?
Thanks for a great chat- please share transcript !
Q5 coming in 1 minute… Can’t believe how fast this chat is going… Love chatting about making school an awesome experience for Ss.
A4: another idea. I call my Sub a traveling sage. Only the Sub can give out several items. Kids love it so does the sub.
A4: A hot item in my class Ss put a spell on another Ss, If Ss doesn't behave well then they lose some gold
In my gamififed class I created pathways for Ss to gain special abilities. Pathway help target specific learning styles
A4 A power up could be allowing Ss to become helpers/leaders or allowing them to access some additional challenge. Empower them
A4 Ss should be given opportunity to design games to reflect intended outcome that assess the learning. Critical thinking, creativi
What do you use to gamify your classes. I'm trying to learn and need some real examples.
A4: Power up tools can also be replacement behaviors that are modeled for Ss
A4 Power up: Give them for a short, designated amount of time, the role of "teacher."
Looking at examples, seems like role playing ANDERSONVILLE TRIAL in history could work.
This is a great idea to use in the class.
Why not? Read X # of books in X genre = power up. Do X math problems = power up, powerup1+Powerup2= unlocks powerup 5.
A4: choice to work indept, w/ a partner/small group, etc.
Ss love whiteboards because reset is easy. Ss have to know a first try (and subsequent) aren't threatening
I keep thinking the redefinition stage of lends itself to a variety of student power-ups.
A4 I could see Power Ups being used to reinforce perseverance, small victories for Ss who are struggling to complete whole tasks
A4: If Ss complete tasks/assess, then bring in different VG for Ss to play & let them learn skills in VG, personalize it
A4: Love the Power Up idea. Hmm, thinking about how we can do this for teachers. What power up ideas would teachers like?
Access can be a powerful tool in a class. Check out for many more ways to use this game mechanic
Q5: Love spicing up a class with a mini game. Let’s hear what you do for a 5 minute filler or review game https://t.co/SdtWCcYCzJ
You guys may like to connect with our brilliant she has much experience in the educational gaming space.
A4 A risk- free classroom where SS could rely on resources to solve problems, ask for help when needed, and be held accountable
We use this w 6-8 graders. Just finished up a whole round of student led service projects n our CREWs
Many Ss are used to being told what to do- I have seen a learning curve in this area w/Ss asking me to "tell them"
Best $49 you will ever spend (includes breakfast & lunch) --> Tomorrow's Classroom Today Conference https://t.co/HRjcLwEYBd
4A) Power Up should depend on Ss interest, personalized, could be simple like praise/recognition it'll motivate them more
Agreed. Practice and assessment can be engaging, applicable, and fun!
A4: (2/2) Examples: AMA Fridays (like reddit but clean), Judge Jury Executioner, LAME HW Options (lit, art & arch, music examples).
A4: movement around room (floor, bean bags, small group table, etc.) during instruction
We do "phone a friend," all the time. That way I can take the fear factor out of questioning.
A4:They still love rewards and titles. King of the throne for mastery, Queen of the throne.
A4: The development of the ability to think critically and communicate effectively are great 'powers'.
A4: I give my Ss the power to motivate. Walk around to keep on task, not help with answers but motivate to keep going or refocus
agreed, but many teachers need to be reminded of better practice
A4 power up seem to be about students getting to collab design create invent launch- then try out their work with others
It is just about changing the language! Great post!
Narrow the choices but when they choose, let them run with it. After awhile, Ss realize that they are in control.
A4 Fair play, collaboration, creativity
Always nice to find ways through games, social media, & current trends to connect learning so we can enhance rapport with students
Definitely! I like that - we'll have to work on figuring out places in the curriculum that can be redesigned!
so true - empowering exp drive their learning, can see impact, & inspire
Yup! I'm huge on this as well, it's awesome for students to have some time in the schedule that's up to them.
A4 In the book Gamestorming (I think) time as constraint is a major game element. Maybe a power-up is a little more time?
Fantastic. So much to be learned from that.
I never thought about it lime that.
you are rocking some great ideas on thanks for sharing your ideas with us.
A5 Anytime we can introduce gaming into the classroom for review or exposure, it is a winner. Kids will persist with games.
Oh man. I love this. I've been trying to think of what a Power Up could be for kids. https://t.co/NmcBOxgCPN
A4 Power up: Give them for a short, designated amount of time, the role of "teacher."
Daylight savings really messed me up. Topic today? Questions ?
Works well for all. The more Ss know about world, the more motivated they are to better it
hmmm, have you ever gamified a summer reading challenge? Sounds perfect for that
absolutely they can even level up within each skill
use both right now. Looking for ideas to integrate with 5th grade curriculum that can be modified. https://t.co/e2vUDdHBgO
Girl power! They need opportunity 2 use their voice 4 good, especially during adolescence
Coffee. The original Power Up?
U take that back. Atari is awesome & will live forever. Well except for that et game
Absolutely. Involve Ss through meaningful collaboration (in classroom and w global pals, too)
From . My Learning Games page https://t.co/ghvegEQlvW .… Not all games have to be with tech-Have students create them
Secret passage ways to earn additional privileges. Perhaps one a week. Still thinking. . .
Do you use a certain program or platform to create or just in hand materials?
FRom
When kids see the work as their own, they excel. When kids see the work as "teacher work", they don't care as much
Also maybe give them access to a privileged piece of information if it's a puzzle/research kind of activity?
Q5: It's an oldy but a goody...Angry Birds. Great short game to demonstrate the iterative process in learning.
Just about every ELA learning goal is addressed through 20% Time but you have to wait till the end to identify them
Thanks! Ideas are my specialty. Integration & implementation... I need to find a powerup.
. I've used to great success. Had them creating businesses."For real." Used best startup practice. Amazing
Many girls are just seeking connection. A relationship is an AMAZING motivator!
Students also love rewards which are centered around learning opportunities that maybe sometimes are not offered or extend class
A4: mid lesson "brain break" w/ music
FRom
When kids see the work as their own, they excel. When kids see the work as "teacher work", they don't care as much
limited or nonexistent... We need to help build future problem solvers & critical thinkers!? https://t.co/XDRffrEbi1
A3: Urban Ss must be taught how to make choices because most often their choices are limited.
A5 Clssrm Yahtzee. Give short 5? quiz, teammates roll dice based on number correct. Get bonus points like Yahtzee.
A4: Students can listen to school appropriate music as a reward.
I think it is sad that with all the testing we are breeding non-thinkers, very robotic kids
A5: I enjoy using Live as a review game at the beginning or end of class. I like the collaboration it requires of Ss!
Absolutely. Need it. But changing thinking is hard. Start with a short story or picturebook
. Why not give 'em a bit of actual, you know, power?
Not filler. Movement & communication activities to build community via . Purposeful & powerful
A5 Ss explore games created by other Ss in with the goal for them to develop a game over time
One item that I have is that they get to walk the classroom pet
A4:Display their creations, brag on them, use student creation as a model.
we should have community chest options around room
Looks fun! Could you explain judge jury and Lame HW? I assume AMA Friday is ask the teacher?
What's Q4? Can't find it.
A5 Games that review concepts....without knowing they are reviewing concepts?
I love this idea! A peek in the "top secret" case file!
I would love to know more about that!
Also amazing to see tchrs get excited over their lessons as the Ss take over. Everyone in this together.
A4: The development of the ability to think critically and communicate effectively are great 'power ups'.
. Yeah. Do really well, and maybe you also get the answer to No. 14 on the upcoming test. ;)
A5 All teachers in my school love to use Kahoot.it with their Ss 4 review. Love to hear Ss getting excited about review competition
Creating a community where Ss feel safe to take creative risks and connect w peers and me is the biggest power-up (also it's free).
Original Atari Football was just as bad.Ruined a perfect Xmas when I 1st played it
when student work becomes engaging & something which they can create they see it as opportunity to perform not just turn in to T
A5: It was stated already but Kahoot. Plickers and nearpod are also good.
It is hilarious to sit and be the student. I try and be as silent as possible. LOL
I have seen and heard from many teachers who said since starting that they have rediscovered passion for teaching
Keep encouraging those Ts! They sometimes need to hear what they're doing is amazing!
If any have already gamified, please help those of us who are mystified. Link to a google drive doc? Please.
A4 Another game element from Gamestorming is having an unclear goal. Clarity of goal would be a cool power-up..
How about board games for K-2?
A5: My Ss use Minecraft 2 recreate fictional worlds from their ELA narratives. Right now we R exploring Golding's island...LOTF.
sometimes I feel like gamefication can leave girls out in the cold. any ideas?
Valid point. Most don't buy the story of do it yourself so you can do it with your students.
Great analogy! "Power ups" exist when Ss "own" skills & strategies & apply them in new situations. https://t.co/xdag2iOXIn
Q4: One of my favorite parts of game design… It can be challenging with out having a game of your own. https://t.co/oxSri3o9EI
Always go back to Ts need to be guides on side, not sages on stage.
I like the idea of using power ups for Ts too! Maybe an opportunity to get more powers/class apps/ resources?
A5: For quick review I use . I have a few made for each lesson/topic.
A4: Great Q! How can Ts can transfer Bloxels power-ups to the classroom: life, bomb, jetpack, invincibility (in the works)? Hmm...
how come the blue Lego man is the one who always gets stabbed? It is like wearing the red shirt on Star Trek
I'm great at being silent. Less great at stopping my eyes from bugging out.
That is a great idea. How are you, buddy?
Hide a QR treasure trail. Solve problems / clues to get the right answer or special tool.
Would love to figure out how to add Minecraft to my classrm. My Ss are fanatics!
making a game that teaches about a subject requires a game designer not teacher.
Weve created stuff in HopScotch lately but also as a part of our inquiry with hands on stuff
A5: Ss love grudge! They like matemoscas and Bazinga, too! And I have, Who Has is a math staple!
a5 low end blooms = kahoot, socrative; higher end blooms = padlet, gdocs, thinglink, mindmaps depends on what we're moving up from!
our summer reading challenge will be coming up quickly, this is getting the wheels turning for me!
cool, what special abilities can they earn?
Knowing that fresh air and nature are also good for the brain, would a brain break walk be possible?
Is student in ? Big proponent of .
Funnest thing I heard all day… Ok it is early but I think odds are this one will win for the day.
Love when the students start to create a Kahoot
A5: Ss can use Minecraft to virtually craft projects for the 3D printer before production.
A4 A Power up can be as simple as positive affirmations from acts to Ss reminding them of their potential
Either a one use, multi use, timed or permanent
A5: Anytime Ss can see that their hard work is paying off is a great choice!
Q5. Ts use Kahoot, Jeopardy, Quizbowl, TicTacTo, etc.
A5: Create a 3-5 step Rube Goldberg machine that illustrates part of your learning this week.
This is a fabulous idea . Will steal! https://t.co/i2Qx1LzTJr
A4: another idea. I call my Sub a traveling sage. Only the Sub can give out several items. Kids love it so does the sub.
A4 Part of problem (where opportunity really resides) is thinking less about things & more about what Ss can derive from power-up..
"got to prepare them for life". We fail to realize life allows retakes/rev. Do grades kill a growth mindset?
A4: Power ups are a great way for students to show ability to exceed grade expectatuns. A way to differentiate up!
A5: Two games played: one is Press Your Luck (a game show) and Risk It All (a risk type mini game)
can you point to anything specific? not sure of how you mean this.
I don't hear teachers say something like that very often. Adult learners tned not to appreciate such an approach, I guess
we still have 27 mins. I have more in my bag
There are lots of activities for summer reading. My public library gamified it back in the 80s.
Love this...the power of words. Will post this on my reminder wall. https://t.co/j12wN53VgS
A2: Start by changing our vocab with Ss- stop saying activity start saying challenge. Challenges should provide voice/choice
no prob and you know there are plenty more where that came from. ;)
Is anyone using classcraft?
Love those ideas -- how does Risk It All work?
Thanks! That's what I was looking for.
Jumping in late from CT- media specialist K-5.Used Flippity this year. the Ss loved it.-Had to engage w/ resources to answer quest.
please take a moment to share two of your PLN Super ⭐️s with us at . Help us all get connected! https://t.co/rv7sUOqO6a
I was on last year and my Ss are still obsessed w making J!-style games and quizzes in all subjs for the class to play.
I am becoming the queen of 😎 oh yeah Ss love too! 😂
You can create a teacher account at Minecraft World and just view. To play they have to purchase the $28 package.
Easy. code a project - get a powerup. Code a multistep project get a complex one.
A5: Kahoot, Jeopardy, Nearpod, and good old-fashioned trash ball.
Hey . Glad to hop in for a few! Fred Ende, Asst. Director of Curriculum, metro NYC.
A4: Power ups for Ss begin with the energy/electricity from their Ts & Ts from their principals, & principals from super.
A4 ask them what their power ups could be mine love helping w announcements
A5: Taboo-like game, Jeopardy, 20 questions
Q6 coming in 1 minute… Sad to see it go but this is our last question… Tear…
A5) STEM building (build tallest, no talk), four square Qs (ask Q, each corner of room is multi choice answer ABCD, choose 1)
A6: Another tool I discovered this week is Purpose Games: https://t.co/9ToVZ6eeY5 Great for map skills, labeling, etc.
Same...and I still remember those games and life-sized game boards and pushing myself to read more. https://t.co/FXy9To33DI
There are lots of activities for summer reading. My public library gamified it back in the 80s.
Same here. Had teachers that plan to retire but due to change in innovation and creativity in clsrm delay retirement.
Know the S's comfort w/competition v. collaborative/social.
And I think it would be best if co-constructed that way it is truly meaningful and sparks self-awareness
The words we use are SO important. Agree. Use the terminology that reflects your expectations.
Did you hear about the Microsoft beta test? Got an email about it yesterday. Thought it could be my "in."
A5: Bell work, Password, Jeopardy...often good and fun for review.
For older, I use a Jeopardy template for review. They also have a partner project to create their own game.
Looking for resources for study skills for Ss. Games would be great reinforcers & informal assessments. Any ideas/suggestions?
that's awesome!! Great job and Congrats!
Great point - Knowing your students is important, and Ss knowing themselves - love the concept of metacognition!
Better yet, ask Ss to gamify all or part of the content
our Ts give compliments to a class. The T gets rewarded after every 25. Jean day, free lunch, extra planning
I want to start using in a PH.D. Class next semester
agreed. Many of my game elements are student designed or from great convos with them.
A5 I stumbled on these at a local gaming store, great little break or reward in history class https://t.co/sGAMDA2gb5
A5. Great coding exercises? Many of the students in our region use Scratch/Scratch Jr. and Kodables.
Yes! Support them even if they fail. Just a stepping stone to success.
That phrase always sticks in my head!
Ability to skip sections, rebuild assignments, PBL projects over tests just to name a few https://t.co/bo29H0JvVv
cool, what special abilities can they earn?
THIS. Bonus: fab meta-lesson on the power of word choice!
https://t.co/Upt5Cw6qoB
A2: Start by changing our vocab with Ss- stop saying activity start saying challenge. Challenges should provide voice/choice
A5: Love , even as a survey (no wrong answers/leaderboard) for quick . Space Race is great in teams.
A5: Kahoot is always a fav!
Quizlet Live is a HUGE hit! Ss are randomly placed in groups&collaborate while reviewing content. https://t.co/1DCcph4GXb
I LOVE taking the kids outside! I tell them, dress for nice days!!!!!
A5 we made up & played our own game of Survivor kids made the rules played more like Calvinball
that is ok. I will sort making up questions.
games are all about metacognition and can engage the students mind on a whole new level.
probably Ts have done some digital gamification with it, too... I need to hunt down some resources :)
Sad to be jumping in at the end. Will definitely check out archive of this chat today! https://t.co/riOLVIx0NT
Q6 coming in 1 minute… Sad to see it go but this is our last question… Tear…
A6 When we identify kids as the experts at something (an app, a technology, etc) their confidence goes wayyy up.
No...but I will look into today! Thanks!
Gotta run, . It's been a pleasure. :) Keep rocking in Skools. We need more like you!
A5: something as simple as "When you catch the ball call out a prime number" is a great filler
A5: This gen of Ss LOVES games with koosh balls! They didn't have them available!
A5 Make "heroism" THE theme of your games.
I get the reviews & games part (use Kahoot and Cram a lot), I don't get the powering up and theme and all that.
A6: Encouraging Ss to "fail forward", analyze what went wrong and try again. Make class a safe place to try, fail, and try again!
YES! Need more buyin from tchrs and admins.
Have to use this one. Haven'd done the game yet! Will do soon!
A6: When my Ss are done with tasks, I have them go around and help other students who need help.
Yes, I don't disagree with you. Just looking for some inspiration before going into the design phase.
A6: Create epic stats video to show off test scores… Example: https://t.co/BHti1N0YRG Crowed went wild when I showed them.
Vaguely remember one around the Olympics. Genres, & number of books.
Scratch has been a great resource for us and makes globalization easy
SS can create old school board games or online option. I provide some links they can browse.
A6 Talk about what "heroic" means. Use the word "hero." Often. Embody heroism yourself.
so true / gamers keep playing b/c they get to go back and get opps to get better at the game - Ed should advantage that
A5: has exploded across our schools. We also use and Question-writing is such an important skill.
I think they do better when they can collaborate. Once confident they can fly solo.
Your students will LOVE it!
Agreed. We've found it to be just as engaging for Ts as it is for Ss.
My 17 yr old son shared with me last night of a movie based on a board game. If movies can do it, certainly we teachers can.
Ts Q and if Ss get it right, you get HW pass or partici. point. But if not, they lose all gained, more have more risk
A6 It's so much fun to have MS Ss create their own superhero avatars. My fav was "Manman" - bitten by radioactive man. Still loling
This is awesome! Similar experience w/ (and I'm so grateful)!
A6 Make "heroism" THE theme of your games.
Can you share those with me too?
They were simple games. Think cardboard board game with various spinners, etc.
A6 - is anyone having their students design the games?
A6: Allowing students to take command over their own learning will allow them to be their own hero.

A6:Motivate, motivate, motivate. When they fail motivate, when they're having a bad day, motivate.
I saw it mentioned but need to emphasize the ability to FAIL and TRY AGAIN is huge in any application of games in learning.
Give them a villain too. Not a student or, if you do, one who can handle it.
A6: We can inspire Ss to feel like heroes in class by allowing them to CREATE. Let their passions & interests inspire their work .

. we have students create games with Scratch in our coding class
A6 - I watched students play an old version of the Oregon Trail the other day. They were loving it - fun one
seems like that'd be a great time to start - just call it a pilot project and see how far it goes, work out kinks!
Gotta run my little one is awake. Have a great day everyone! Thanks!

A2 The "greater" game atmosphere is a learning tool as well as students strategize , not just the curriculum being learned.
I could totally see you having Ss create 12 cards and making a timeline as an assessment... https://t.co/rJHBKuyKOj
A5 I stumbled on these at a local gaming store, great little break or reward in history class https://t.co/sGAMDA2gb5
A6: Challenge, Choice, & finding their voice:) when SS push their own boundaries & stretch thier learning they FeeL it- "hero-high"

I think I have already done this… Hehe
A6: Allow Ss voice to be heard & recognize strengths, embrace their ideas, allow them to shine
WOW! That's a blast from the past!
Totally agree! Ss love throwing koosh at my smart board! We also play toss games with sq roots, etc.
Yes now Ss want to be spoonfeed but we have to change this. Wont work in 21st/22nd centuries.
A6: We can inspire Ss to feel like heroes by hearing their voice. What do Ss want/need? Unless we ask, we'll never know.
A6: environment that promotes risk taking & celebrates success- simple class tweet or ESPN type highlight reel for a unit/quest.
Amazing chat today! I have loved this and learned SO much!
"Process the Process" is so very Zen. And so key. I often forget that step with kids AND with adult PD.
A6. Text (wish I could remember the name) said the funnier/more engaging the way to lose, more likely gamers would keep playing.

Anyone think that reality TV shows sending ppl off the island and packing their knives and going home hurt gaming resilience?
A6: specific, detailed, focused, targeted feedback!!!!!!
A6 Ask Ss to analyze (where Ts facilitate rather than direct) how the game’s action went. Where they call out wins n misses.

I used a conch shell with my students when we read Lord of the Flies. Passed it around - had to hold it to speak
Thanks to and all in this morning's for more ideas & inspiration for my upcoming ELA gamification. My Ss will be psyched!
A6: Allow Ss to be leaders in the class/school. Ts don't have to be experts to try new tools. Maybe a student is a pro!
Snakes and ladders you say? I'll choose a python or king cobra. Why not something like dominion?
Cool way to start one's day !
Anytime! The door's always open and Ss love to show off for visitors!
I think reality TV shows actually support the vision of gaming, but none allow for restarts or re-trys.
Offering students challenges that they must take knowledge and apply to demonstrate mastery promotes skills much like superheroes
Yes. Beliver in Design Thinking in the clsrm. Need more of this in lessons.
Thank You to our PLN for another great and for guest moderating.

That's what I'm trying to find out. I use all sorts of games, just don't understand how to level up & such.
That's my goal. I just need a general idea.
Just thought: Why did I not gamify my "Tech Team" after school club? Will do next time
