We invite all educators to contribute to the conversation of preparing preservice teachers as well as practicing teachers for the realities of the 21st-century classroom. This includes principals, in-service teachers, university supervisors of student teachers, education professors, higher education administration, instructional technology specialists, and so on. Anyone with a vested interest in supporting our teachers in preparation for teaching the diverse K-12 student population is invited to participate.
A7: One next step is maintaining diverse mobilization (e.g., chats w/neighbors, colleagues, videos, memes, etc.) of conversations like #AERADivKchat. Who is ready to join me for round two at 8pm CST for #teacheredchat!? #convosonthemove
Thanks again to @RG1gal, @profnicolej, @meganbang3, and @karikokka for joining us tonight! Q7: What is one idea, next step, or wondering that you are taking with you after participating in tonight's chat? Any relevant coalitions you would like to share as examples? #AERADivKchat
A1: Teaching for equity; teaching diverse students; developing a professional identity; how to deal w/ high stakes assessments (in teacher ed & in K-12)...just to start #TeacherEdChat
A1: One challenge is consistency across programs of study and engaging faculty in teaching the courses in teacher education to integrate technology successfully & seamlessly #TeacherEdChat
Preparing new teachers to teach in the 21st century classroom. Teacher education programs must begin to prepare new teachers how to integrate technology and still teach the content. #umedtech#edl577um#TeacherEdChat
I totally get that! It shouldn't be, but often is a technology v. content when technology can support content, but supporting both is tough! #TeacherEdChat
A1: Preparing new teachers to teach in the 21st century classroom. Teacher education programs must begin to prepare new teachers how to integrate technology and still teach the content. #umedtech#edl577um#TeacherEdChat
A1: Another challenge is getting faculty w/ diverse points of views and philosophies to approach these in a more consistent manner so students in the program are not sidetracked #teacheredchat
A1 I believe the most pressing issues related to teaching is ensuring teachers understand the standards completely in order to develop purposeful discourse and metacognition among students. #teacherEdChat
Alright, #teacheredchat, I'm just jumping in from #AERADivKchat. My name is Maria and I'm eager to imagine what might be(come) for teacher ed with everyone!
Hi Kira! Thanks so much for stopping by #TeacherEdChat! I am just trying to catch up on #AERADivKChat, which I missed on mom duty. Looked like such an amazing conversation!
Yes, considering many instructors in teacher ed are adjuncts, a sense of identity & full understanding of the program of studies can be a challenge #TeacherEdChat
Preparing new teachers to teach in the 21st century classroom. Teacher education programs must begin to prepare new teachers how to integrate technology and still teach the content. #umedtech#edl577um#TeacherEdChat
This is really true & it's hard not to get sucked into edumyth discourses that are so prevalent, esp. when teacher candidates believe them fervently! How to "unlearn" these ideologies #TeacherEdChat
I totally get that! It shouldn't be, but often is a technology v. content when technology can support content, but supporting both is tough! #TeacherEdChat
Yes, it's a depth of knowledge that's required that can allow for flexibility & promote engaged, meaningful student learning, but there's often so much to cover in teacher education coursework that depth gets sacrificed for breadth #Teacheredchat
Yes, the challenge of keeping up with rapidly changing tech and its role in preparing teachers is a struggle, which means faculty need to be lifelong learners & open to change #TeacherEdChat
We've been working on re-designing our undergrad prgm at @ArcadiaSOE . We thought a lot about supporting students in developing greater understanding of social justice in education. Also, Science/STEAM and gender gap is a big issue. #TeacherEdChat
Yes & it's so unfortunate how this and so many other dichotomies prevent teachers from engaging with innovative tools like technology or innovative pedagogies because they see them as completely displacing other forms of learning #TeacherEdChat
#teacheredchat A1: I think one of the most pressing issues related to teacher ed right now is that programs often implicitly (& explicitly) enact 'banking models' of preparation (& ideology) for pre-service teachers.
Yes, many large as well as small education prep programs rely on adjuncts, who can bring practical strengths, but might not be as invested in overall curriculum design & sequence #TeacherEdChat
Good evening #TeacherEdChat! I'm Cherise McBride, literacy researcher and teacher educator @BerkeleyGSE. Just got done moderating the whirlwind that was #AERADivKchat. Happy to join y'all to talk about pressing issues in TED!
A1: one of the challenges is that there is nothing on self care or social emotional learning even though teaching is one of the most stressful professions #teacheredchat
I believe that is why having one on one mentors for new teachers for the first two years of teaching is important. This gives our new educators the opportunity to share what they do and don't understand. Sometimes, they don't know what they don't know. #Teacheredchat
This is so true! We have to practice what we preach. Our preservice teachers are learners who also have lives and knowledge they bring to the classroom #TeacherEdChat
Our @majorseducate program is also in the midst of this to offer routes to "teaching"/"teacher ed" that manifest BEYOND the formal K-12 classroom. #teacheredchat
Yes, and how to scaffold that learning so that it's not such a shock to teacher candidates who may have only seen the traditional model their whole lives! #TeacherEdChat
A1. Wondering ... across the country .. when were most undergraduate programs last re-designed to accurately how much learning and curriculum has changed? #teacheredchat
Oran from AZ joining late. A1: Knowing how to truly differentiate curriculum to meet the varying educational levels of students in the classroom. #teacherEdChat
A1 A big one is classroom/school safety broadly defined. Strange to see how it's playing out in public debate vs. how it looks in different schools depending on social location #TeacherEdChat
YES! We definitely have this issue. As a large program, it's tough to find placements, let alone cohesive placements that support learning in the preservice classroom #TeacherEdChat
A2. I would say the need to be critical regarding "best practices." That was a major takeaway from my research...what may be "best" for the masses doesn't automatically apply to each student #teacheredchat
A2: The old & continuing model of publishing research in peer-review journals read by a select population can leave students wondering about the practicality of research scholarship #TeacherEdChat
A1: another pressing problem is that there needs to be more work on anti-racist / bias pedagogy. Too many kids leave school worse than they came in #teacheredchat
I love that this is a program wide undertaking. W/o the cohesion of teacher candidates getting social justice beyond the "diversity" class, it won't stick #TeacherEdChat
A1: one of the challenges is that there is nothing on self care or social emotional learning even though teaching is one of the most stressful professions #teacheredchat
A2: Like the classrooms the new teachers will be entering, teacher education programs must change the format of their instruction to a collaborative format. #umedtech#edl577um#TeacherEdChat
A2 more research needed on how to prepare preservice teachers who will have the dispositions and skills to continue to learn and improve throughout their career #teacheredchat
This is so true. We often don't practice what we preach :( but I think some of this is systemic. There are high stakes assessments for candidates too & curriculum that "must get covered" #TeacherEdChat
#teacheredchat@kasi_mae come tell us what you some of the most pressing issues in teacher education are right now! I know you've got something to contribute. :-) #bringafriend
A1 I have a fascination right now on the intersection of pedagogy, protest, and civic action. None of that was covered in my teacher candidacy over a decade ago.
Yes, in this day & age, teaching brings a plethora of new challenges including issues of school violence, which might lead new candidates to reconsider their initial ideals of what teaching will mean in their futures #TeacherEdChat
A2 more research needed on how to prepare preservice teachers who will have the dispositions and skills to continue to learn and improve throughout their career #teacheredchat
A2: Our relationship with information is changing! From how we interact with academic information to how we personally consume media, what it means to develop #InformationLiteracy is changing and more educators should be a part of that conversation. #teacheredchat
Yes. As a first-year faculty member @millsapscollege@majorseducate, I'm gleaning big insights into the constraints state & national accreditation requirements place on teacher ed programs. #teacheredchat
In reply to
@ProfHsieh, @millsapscollege, @majorseducate
Q2 Among the many, I think disciplinary silos are a big barrier to collaboration between teacher educators. How do study (and teach) interdisciplinarily? #TeacherEdChat
A2: How gen teachers can meet the needs of those with disabilities. More students with disabilities are being included into the gen ed classroom, but most prep programs don't give teachers the skills they need to succeed. #teacherEdChat
A1 I have a fascination right now on the intersection of pedagogy, protest, and civic action. None of that was covered in my teacher candidacy over a decade ago.
A2 too much research is either on preservice or inservice - need more research that follows participants from preservice to inservice to better understand that transition and how we can better help people succeed in it #teacheredchat
I agree 💯% Carolyn! Been in schools where this was done poorly and others where it was done extremely well. It makes a huge difference and trickles down to students. #teacheredchat
It's so sobering sometimes, particularly when you're committed to supporting teachers by modeling and enacting more innovative pedagogies #TeacherEdChat

@MFGWallace, @millsapscollege, @majorseducate
A2: the problem with scholarship is that it doesn’t always reach the masses. It stays in an academic journal that only few have access to. If we want #equity,we have to make sure our work has impact in practice, not only how often it’s been cited by privileged folk #teacheredchat
A2 benefits of key TED elements of spending time in community, training alongside mentors. particularly as more and more programs allow "fast-track" ways to get teachers into classrooms. #teacheredchat

We know we are focusing on the “issues” in Teacher Education tonight! We hope you stay the course with us as we plan to explore these issues further in future chats. #teacherEdChat
YES! Disciplinary silos at the university level are a huge issue for us as well. It can be hard to collaborate in our department, but almost impossible to work across our college, but I really want to engage in collaborative scholarship across disciplines #TeacherEdChat
A2 too much research is either on preservice or inservice - need more research that follows participants from preservice to inservice to better understand that transition and how we can better help people succeed in it #teacheredchat
Yet many teachers today are seeking cross-endorsements to meet either the challenges of teaching students with disabilities or successful integration of tech #TeacherEdChat
A2 I think it's time to go back to the drawing board in terms of what experiences/assets/deficits prospective teachers bring with them to teacher prep, which means revisiting constructs like the "apprenticeship of observation", etc. #teacheredchat
YES! I totally cosign on this. We need longitudinal developmental studies in a bunch of areas. I've never understood the preservice/ inservice divide #TeacherEdChat
A1 It is imperative that preservice Ts be exposed to high quality modeling of best practice. Expecting a cooperating teacher to have it all is ambitious, especially with the newer year-long student teaching experiences. #teacheredchat
A3: I think a critical issue is how to balance service demands & how to help the university recognize the value of K-12 service work as well as mentoring work that goes from preservice to inservice #TeacherEdChat
A3 Some current issues related to service and volunteerism that we need to address in teacher education is homelessness, LGBTQ community, and cyberbullying. #teacherEdChat
A2 I'm Kitty joining late from Oakland. I teach teachers & host a radio show on education. The regulations & requirements don't have much to do with what it really takes to teach. #teacheredchat
A2 #teacheredchat: Many prevailing scholarly traditions (e.g., methodologies & theories) reinscribe systems of reduction, rather than illuminate unique complexities within teaching and learning.
A2: the problem with scholarship is that it doesn’t always reach the masses. It stays in an academic journal that only few have access to. If we want #equity,we have to make sure our work has impact in practice, not only how often it’s been cited by privileged folk #teacheredchat
Disciplinary silos as well as adjuncts who might not be firmly rooted in identity of the institution could contribute to a sense of disjointness in higher ed in various programs, not just teacher ed #TeacherEdChat
OMG, YES. Education is developmental & teacher education is particularly developmental. These "fast-track" programs deprofessionalize the work of teaching #TeacherEdChat
A1 Everyone in teacher ed needs to sort out how to make good on the AACTE Clinical Practice Commission work in their (varied) contexts. https://t.co/9VySEbuuEO#teacheredchat
Yes Dena! I noticed that in certain databases, there is now the option to make your work free to the public (which costs the researcher money... and it's not cheap). What implications, if any, do you think this will have? #teacheredchat
A2: the problem with scholarship is that it doesn’t always reach the masses. It stays in an academic journal that only few have access to. If we want #equity,we have to make sure our work has impact in practice, not only how often it’s been cited by privileged folk #teacheredchat

Yes. Inclusion, like diversity, is covered in a single class. This doesn't begin to scratch the surface of supporting teachers to develop inclusive practices & dispositions #TeacherEdChat
A4 If I were to lead a #TeacherEdChat through a deep dive, I would focus on cultural competency. Educators need to understand how to reach every student no matter what. #BeTheOne
A4: Rethinking how teacher education programs recruit students to ensure we a growing our base of highly qualified ambitious educators. Too many incredible young people disregard the teaching industry for law, business and medicine #teacheredchat
A4: I would continue to focus on ed tech as that is where faculty need most assistance esp. given students in K-12 will continue to be heavy users of social media & tech apps, & teacher candidates need to be prepared for this both now & in future #TeacherEdChat
Thank you @JudyArzt@NicolRHoward@ProfHsieh@sarahdateechur for moderating tonight’s #TeacherEdChat reboot.
Thank you ALL, for joining us. See you again in one month, and remember to follow us or the hashtag for the exact date, guest moderator, and topic.
A3: I think that the mandatory observations are not enough. Teachers need to spend quality time volunteering and understanding kids outside of the classroom as well.
Joining late, 3rd grade from NM
#teacheredchat
Hi Kitty! I agree, but they are major gatekeepers that take up big room in the curriculum in teacher education because they prevent people from getting into classrooms #TeacherEdChat
Yes, those seeking cross endorsements are often doing so voluntarily & if teaching already, might not have tuition paid for by their districts #TeacherEdChat

So much of my work w/Ts is helping them see, navigate, negotiate, build, and sustain ways to move "in-between" systems maintaining oppression (in all its forms). #teacheredchat

I want to be sure to invite all of you to join #BookCampPD to our weekly chat on Saturday morning's at 9:00 EST.. This Saturday we will be talking about the new website https://t.co/S5pzTtgW6A - hope to see you then!! #teacheredchat
A2: And research is not without bias. The researcher has a question he/she/they’re interested in studying and we try to answer it objectively but at the same time, the question is from one’s perspective and sometimes we see what we want to see. #teacheredchat
A4: How to develop teacher/ teacher educator professional identity in teacher education spaces bc we must reclaim the narrative on teaching as an "easy" profession & unpack the complexities of what it means to develop a professional identity as an educator #Teacheredchat
And I feel the same way about technological dispositions. That the kinds of interactions we seek for Ts to have with digitally mediated learning and new media texts could be taught across TED programs, not isolated to a single course #TeacherEdChat
In reply to
@ProfHsieh, @OranTkatchov, @TeacherEdChat

Yes, I think adjunct/ tenure-line is an additional problematic silo. We've got to start working in community if we want Teacher Education to be more inclusive & cohesive #TeacherEdChat

A4: Exploring student passions through relationship building and a question-based, self-directed curriculum, that puts content second to a student's future. #TeacherEdChat
A2: Not questioning the system. Most teacher ed. programs teach you WHAT to do but not WHY you do it. There are systemic ideas to understand and change. #TeacherEdChat
YES! Mine too <3 Would love to collaborate & think together through this work--how to work w/in the system to dismantle it w/o being co-opted by it! #TeacherEdChat

A3: "Forced volunteering"/ community service hours required by schools and colleges. We should inspire students to volunteer via positive culture, but not trivialize or drudge them into inauthentic experiences. #TeacherEdChat
This is truth & if we're not careful, those biases really inform how we position ourselves & the communities that are part of our research #TeacherEdChat
A1 – 1) Agreement on what the curriculum should be by TPPs 2) Faculty who were actually #k12 teachers. 3) Start #teacherprep progams the first week of freshman year instead of waiting for junior year of undergrad
#teacheredchat#edpolicy#edreform
YES! Totally agree. I integrate tech, diversity & inclusion in all my courses, but each can get pushed to the margins as there is so much to cover. Breadth v. depth is such a challenge #TeacherEdChat
In reply to
@cherisemcb, @OranTkatchov, @TeacherEdChat
PA requires 90 credit hours of coursework that covers sped topics extensively and fieldwork with each course. Additionally, @delval hosts 2 special ed classes on campus. Dedicated classrooms and on campus experiences. #TeacherEdChat we hang out, mentor, and more
A4: I think that teachers need to feel confident in providing instruction when they start and a better mentorship program, at least in NM, would go a long way towards that #teacheredchat
Yep. We require substantial K12 experience (tenured) in cert area as a minimum. Our ed majors start coursework & field experience 1st semester. Set the bar high for engaged student scholars. #teacherEdChat
Agreed. We take mentoring into our own hands at all levels. State mandated mentoring is typically “on boarding and orientation” rather than prof dev. #teacherEdChat
30 minutes moves so quickly! Our chat tonight was fast and mighty. Thanks again to all for joining tonight - we will see you next month! #TeacherEdChat
That's really interesting. I wonder if that could be part of "fieldwork" for preservice teachers too--to actually really spend time asset mapping, but also in the community in spaces that are traditionally marginalized. Thanks for your perspectives! #TeacherEdChat
I get that, and I always try to remind my students that I'm a #lifelonglearner too so if I don't have the answers, we can figure them out together; it's actually a good moment when I position myself alongside them instead of as expect #TeacherEdChat
A1 – Also lacking are real life examples of teaching. Pre-service teachers need rich and plentiful examples of what it means to be culturally relevant or have high expectations. Go beyond definitions and see what they actually look like!
#teacheredchat#edpolicy#edchat#k12
A2 – Pre-service teachers need to be taught how locate research relevant to their teaching + know how to adopt/adapt it to fit #k12 contexts, and when to disregard it
#teacheredchat#edchat#edpolicy#edreform
