Melissa from Green Lake - ready to get my on
-
Hi ! It's been a while. I'm Kyle and teach 7/8 in Regina
-
My grade 8s love watching https://t.co/bIfqNMhQFo at start of class to get discussion going, also talk about what isn't shown
-
-
A1-My grade 2s stay connected with current events through checking Twitter frequently.
-
sounds like a good source... need a Canadian one as well here.
-
This is impressive for grade 2s! Even I have a tough time making sense of it all.
-
A1 - I hook student with stories from my travels - then build from there
-
It's very basic in our room. We follow a few local news stations, political leaders, etc.
-
Hi, I am Brooke Korchinski. A pre-service T
-
-
talking about what is the shown is so impor. We need to be independent thinkers which can be tough in this world.
-
-
A1: There's always a way, whether it's a what's happening now vs then or recent developments (comes up a lot in science).
-
Excited to participate in tonight on behalf of . Tweets by Robbi (Communications Officer). Looking forward to the topic!
-
Q2: make the students think about what is happening in the world, to start questioning society and norms
-
Great place to start, especially at that age. Start building worldviews early on
-
A2: Important to recognize how their world relates to others. Change in own world and support for others can start here.
-
Joining late! Ellen from Regina, French K, Core French, Arts Ed
-
And even early on it can be discussed that news articles are presented from one view and there are always other sides
-
A2: knowledge of world events is first step to being a global citizen. Knowledge is power
-
Great to see you on here tonight Ellen!
-
-
A2 - Students are global citizens. Social media has shrunk our world right down.
-
That's important to start that early on. Will always be aware and thinking critically about media they consume.
-
It is definitely critical that we set time aside for students to access prior knowledge & share connections about current events
-
Sorry I'm late. Ferrah from Regina. Teach grade 7/8 & try to help moderate . Recouping still so sleepy tonight.
-
A2 Ss are very aware of what's going on in the world. Classrooms should be safe place to critically reflect as global citizens
-
Ss can access the news of the world with a click of a button, make them understand what this means https://t.co/nksQrww1H8

-
4 my gr 2s 'world events' may be things kids do in other parts of the world. Its all perspective.
-
-
We also need to be aware that events DO affect our students and they DO want to talk about how it affects them... Part 1
-
A2: Important to create active & knowledgeable citizens. This early engaged plants many seeds.
-
Exactly our Ss are viewing global activities -need to be able to have open discussions in a safe place https://t.co/0AZiPwv9XR

-
A2: Also, discussing current events creates experience with critical thinking & other worldviews.
-
I was taken aback that my gr 3 stdnts were having a serious discussion about the things Trump was saying about minorities. Pt 2
-
A3: Haven't used this much yet, but it looked promising when I first found it: Newsela: https://t.co/Fcr2Bo6ACs Anyone tried it?
-
. it provides opportunity to explore ideas & ask questions in a safe place!

-
The more connected people get via tech, etc the more important it is 4 Ss to develop a sense of the world
-
Helping small children discern the truth and to think critically about world events from an early age is so important-
-
-
A3: Use Twitter quite a bit in my class. Trending topics, shared articles are solid places to start.
-
A3: https://t.co/Ix0oNnxP1m is full of articles you can print off at different reading levels. SCIC has awesome lesson plans
-
-
-
-
It can be scary to see the same major event over and over and not understand it's the same event replayed
-
-
. Have used some but plan to explore more next year.
-
I love this way of showing kids current events! So vital to let them form their own political views!
-
A3: I saw some grade ones really intrigued by Google Earth!
-
UNICEF has some great resources
-
My K's are always blown away by google earth. And how far away Saskatoon is.
-
Truth. Half my friends on What's App live outside N. America - I pay more attention to events in their countries
-

we need to remember to tap news from many sources and perspectives.

we need to remember to tap news from many sources and perspectives.
-
-
I keep thinking about the kids out there who just sit on their anxiety about what they hear and never get to unpack it.
-
Q3 We've gathered lessons on wide topics meeting SK curriculum. Foundation 4 understanding world events https://t.co/I9sQy0BlT9
-
-
A4: Huge question. scaffold that work through fact vs opinion for one thing
-
-
Q4: make sure Ss understand the terms, and are aware that it is a safe environment to learn in
-
-
We also need to allow students to have perspectives different than our own.
-
A3 Skype chats are always great. Ss can learn things they wouldn't normally learn from a news article.
-
Chad from The Burn. Just joined in tonight; anyone use newsmap? That's a good one.
-
Multiple perspectives are so crucial for understanding power relationships that influence world events https://t.co/E5UNR9G8x8

-
. exactly! Or don’t have an opportunity to even consider there are alternatives!
-
A4: use a chart Ss list facts they gather from news reports and check if each fact makes them agree or disagree with the issue
-
A4: Chalk talk: Silent topic grp webbing to activate and access prior knowledge/misconceptions. No talking; just writing/drawing

A3 Trusting Ss to ask the things they are wondering about and letting their Qs guide the discussion can be a strategy
-
-
Good idea! Thanks! strikes again for knowledge sharing.
-
Very important - to not shut down discussion if we don’t agree - encourage idea sharing https://t.co/7LVwApjBiN
-
-
We also need to allow students to have perspectives different than our own.
-
-
-
I like doing this using the QFT (Question Formulation Technique) via So powerful! https://t.co/L7gflikdL4
-
-
A3 Trusting Ss to ask the things they are wondering about and letting their Qs guide the discussion can be a strategy
-
I use this a lot w/ my 5s; they ask great Q's; better than my 8s last year:)
-
A4 This blog post lays out 10 steps to prep for approaching the big scary world events with students: https://t.co/k9TCN8u0Ce
-
we’re interested is full of Teachers who make a difference!
-
I remember struggling to understand and make sense of 9-11 with my grade 10's
-
A4 Understanding difference between charity & justice can be big road block. We must transform guilt into empowerment through ed
-
...and the Jays game too just a Twitter click away:)
-
Q5. What are some strategies for ensuring all Ss have a voice in discussions of world events? https://t.co/wBzbWapjp5
-
Last wk we started with a mys skype, then exchanged pics and a wk later followed with a q+a Skype. Went a bit deeper
-
. the same thing with the other major tragedies - need to be able to discuss them with Ss!
-
Hi better late than never.
-
they are great - Did one with a UN Representative from Africa with my Gr12’s- it was awesome!
-
My Grade 9 Science teacher didn't even teach that day. He rolled in a tv and we talked about it together
-
-
-
A5 I love using a talking stick for these types of discussions
-
A4 talk to previous Ts to learn about S stories/connections to sensitive issues and possible contacts for support
-
A5: I have often restricted sharing to current events rather than show and tell.
-
-
A5 There are always a million things happening in the world. Ask students which ones they are interested in discussing
-
i love the idea of using a talking stick, but i find many students pass rather than talk. any suggestions?
-
Sorry , need to sign off early tonight. Looking forward to going through the archive later.
-
I spent the day- heck part of the week discussing with my gr9 ELA class!
-
I have been using for 4 yrs and love the levelled reading. Have Ss use GDocs for collaborative summaries
-
that was certainly a grim day, and I don't think I handled it well at all. It was hard to be objective.
-
A5:say a statement and Ss move to 1 of 4 corners stating if they Strongly agree to strongly disagree. All Ss have a voice & chat
-
I always liked to have different Ss share each day - have an item to share on the NEWS WALL
-
A5 We've done chats on to give Ss who aren't as comfortable with speaking more of a chance to participate
-
I had a current events board that kids could put up payers of their own events, news paper items they were interested in etc
-
forgot about that one. thanks for the reminder.
-
Sometimes seems needed so quieter Ss get chance. Also use 'pounce&bounce' to chk peer listening https://t.co/pk6z1ce0K5
-
using a backchannel - like padlet or twitter fall - to give Ss options to add to the discussion.
-
I need to do this. It helps keep the room's environment theirs doesn't it?
-
9-11 was hard and there r more resources now, but it is b4 most my Ss now. I share my experience and their P's
-
Remember this struggle teaching grade 9/10. Kids were terrified. I didn't know how to comfort them. https://t.co/w3fJFR09yF
-
-
I remember struggling to understand and make sense of 9-11 with my grade 10's
-
A5: our class Edmodo page allows for Ss to answer polls and share ideas / questions / feelings
-
I had a current events wall too. Students wrote headlines and mini summaries on DIY whiteboards
-
-
-
Q6. How can Ts support Ss interests in different types of world events? (athletic, political, natural) https://t.co/mdoB8u80Aa
-
groups are also a great digital vehicle for sharing current events topics... Need to build on that I suppose
-
I use pounce&bounce, I just pick, they need 2 b ready & ready to respond to peers
-
Such a great idea https://t.co/HXe9Gx6YRl

A5: our class Edmodo page allows for Ss to answer polls and share ideas / questions / feelings
-
A6 It helps if the T models and is actually interested in a variety of global events
-
-
can't read fast enough! I just said this too.
-
-
A5 follow up with 140 character reason why they chose their position with the topic
-
Ss can make own newsela accounts and explore articles on a variety of topics
-
Sorry Need to run. See you next week.
-
Yes .. It really does https://t.co/WbTRhEQzkn
-
-
I need to do this. It helps keep the room's environment theirs doesn't it?
-
very new to and would love to hear more about this sometime, how you do it? Ss record and submit?
-
Love this idea https://t.co/6smcpkzx47
-
-
Ss can make own newsela accounts and explore articles on a variety of topics
-
-
... Well we successfully solved all education's more thorny problems in the first ten minutes...
-
I respect the right to pass Sometimes I prep those kids ahead with leading Q' posed as wonders to give thinking time
-
Also, there was ice cream cake
-
Modeling positive, engaged global citizenship is powerful https://t.co/oWHkhW1HJ0

-
A6 It helps if the T models and is actually interested in a variety of global events
-
Wonderful! So the other 40 minutes have been spent discussing the banalities of life?
-
how do you deal with sensitive issues and having Ss share their voices?
-
OK, missing the ice cream cake hurts! Anyone save me a piece?
-
Loved teaching grade 6 during election year .. Always held mock elections and brought Ss with me to polling station
-
Sorry. The leftovers were consumed by my cat.
-
A6 I enjoy current events as Ss choose relevant topics and they can expect to be challenged on how it affects live of others
-
well, we’ve figured out the issues with education, proposed a few new options, the NHL playoffs and the Jays win. U?
-
-
I struggle with the disconnect of being an ex-high school teacher facing 10-11 year olds. Still need the conversation, but diff
-
A6: Ss choose a current event & share the "what", "so what" & "now what" to consider implications and short/long term effects
-
- Every Friday a group of Ss (Gr12’s ) had to bring headlines to discuss. They each did a blog post about one of them
-
I'm still trying to figure out how be on time!Should have talked playoffs before I filled my draft! Who's gonna win?
-
A6 Providing avenues for Ss to lead in creating change, taking meaningful action on issues Ss are passionate about is key
-
well, I can tell you that no Canadian team will hoist the cup this year!
-
I understand this strategy -but I know how hard some Ss struggle to be "on the spot" W/O time to think https://t.co/0vpwaw7e4T
-
-
Popsicle sticks work too.I don't accept 'I don't know' either.Ss don't need big speech but do need involvement
-
It's always an election year somewhere. It would be neat to run a mock election based on Chad's politics
-
Haha, I had that much figured out!
-
I never thought of that 😉 cool idea https://t.co/jpSznnc2j9

I loved the News in 15 minutes with my Gr7’s - they did a newscast every week - was hilarious!
-
So inspirational. Love your ideas and resources https://t.co/V4lyixUK2y

-
Running it based on another countries politics is a great idea. Lead to deep thinking
-
A6 guiding Ss from awareness to understanding to action encourages critical thinking, citizenship, sustainable interest
-
I wish I'd thought of it before :p This is what happens when "It's 5 o'clock somewhere" is on the playlist
-
Nice to join you tonight friends G'nite
-
I had gr9’s do Oprah/DrPhil with Midsummer Nigh’ts Dream characters! It was a riot!
-
Thanks for the time, albeit short, yet valuable
