Instead of a specific topic, we will have an OPEN FORUM What do YOU want to talk about in the context of resilience? What questions do you have? What support would you like? What topics would you like to have in the future for #resiliencechat? What's working for you? What isn't?
If anyone throws out a question and you have resources or an answer than by all means, share! It would be nice to develop a running resource list. #resiliencechat
A FABULOUS resource for math is Jo Boaler! She has a lot of great information and insight in the area of math. She is a professor of Mathematics Ed at Stanford. Google her. #resiliencechat
For the more experienced teachers: How dynamic are you as a teacher compared to 5, 10, 20 years ago? I find myself (going into my fifth year teaching) still very much adjusting major components. #Resiliencechat
Prof Susan in IL, here for part of the hour. I recently learned that children in Japan along with teachers do most of the cleaning in schools--so students have greater appreciation of their schools, plus activity that contributes to resilience & discipline.
#resiliencechat
Great resources. I also want to add that anytime one discusses trauma, ACES or trauma-informed schools we have to do so without being in a deficit mindset and w/o using deficit language. That is always a challenge. We should talk more about just how to to that. #resiliencechat
#resiliencechat Struggling with so much right now. Cancer is just the tip of the iceberg. Behind on mortgage. Bills. Oh hell not going to bashful. https://t.co/IURXmRWqC1
I kind of feel like the kids are different. Most of them from trauma of some sort at home. Also, with the increase of tech., kids are losing out on family time and tech is being used to keep kids quite, instead of parental expectations and follow-through. #resiliencechat
I don't think it's a "lack" of resilience. It's more a matter of his/her resilience hasn't been tapped. So...we need to look at ways of tapping that to help them. #resiliencechat
#resiliencechat Way too many emotions. Trying to learn how to let go. Learning about resentment. Painful lesson for me right now. Family dynamics (birth family) eating me alive.
#resiliencechat working on meditative practices. Gardening is about the only thing that is keeping me sane. Taking long walks and touching trees where I perceive they are OK being touched is really healing for me.

Yes. I think that we are at a place in education where to support the student, we need to support the family. That means engaging in some type of parent education or outreach. Many schools are doing this now. #resiliencechat
I value #resiliencechat more than you can possibly know. Just interacting with like minded people who provide each other with compassion is really a great place.
I think bringing current events is important. In doing so, it is important to be cognizant of how to do it in a developmentally appropriate way. #resiliencechat
I have deliberately chosen works of literature for my students that include lessons of resilience:
Leslie Marmon Silko, Ceremony
Buchi Emecheta, Destination Biafra
Paule Marshall, Praisesong 4 the Widow
Films: Naturally Native, Smoke Signals, Winged Migration
#resiliencechat
That means the world to me that you feel that way. You have been such a "fixture" in #resiliencechat that it just wouldn't be the same without you!!! #resiliencechat
Love this literature list! It is also important to have students write or tell their OWN stories about how they engaged and tapped into their resilience. #resiliencechat
It is rough, but I am determined to survive. Why I made the difficult choice to change hospitals an oncologists. But I still am appreciative of the other people who were part of that team. #resiliencechat
Interesting that you should ask that because I have experienced a shift with teachers with respect to that news as well. We even had "active shooter" training and drills. Who ever thought it would come to this??? #resiliencechat
Thanks, Bill. I have amazing inner strength from my mom. Compassion, sense of humor and sensitivity from my dear ol' Daddio who had to hide all of that from the world. I will never stop missing him. #resiliencechat
I made a decision with Parkland to discuss the event but not mention the shooter by name, no 15 minutes of fame for psychopaths anymore #resiliencechat
My previous district wouldn't practice active shooter drills because it might traumatize the kids. What?!? No one knowing what to do in the case of an active shooter would really traumatize them! #resiliencechat
Not at all! You are here at the right place at the right time! #resiliencechat OPEN FORUM tonight. Have a question? Have a resource? Have an idea? Share!
Question for my fellow Canadian educators, is the reason we are less likely to attend conferences in the summer due to the short but spectacular summer we have #resiliencechat
Someone recently told me to focus on one goal at a time - it’s all too much at once. But another part of me thinks - “we don’t have time to tackle just one thing at a time.” It is a fine line to find balance. #resiliencechat
My husband, aka Mr. MIT, says that you best teach what you are struggling with. He means all that msssy emotional stuff primarily. Way too true. #resiliencechat
Hey there! I think a topic could be how to recharge after strssful days.
How to recognise the signs of strugglers
How to teach coping skills .
Even if we have covered these, refreshes are always good. 😁💕 #resiliencechat
#resiliencechat as I left for the summer last yr I thought I would never come back. Here I am starting another school year in a few wks. Still keeping an eye out for other possibilities while making sure I grow as an educator. Anyone else feel this struggle?
Because I was bullied relentlessly K-8 and because I am the grand daughter of Jews who escaped Eastern Europe, I am very concerned about social justice pertaining to immigration and other issues. #resiliencechat
Taking Care of the Caretaker--A topic near and dear to my heart!! I am really focusing on this, this year and helping and supporting others as they focus on it too! #resiliencechat
#resiliencechat maybe topics of how to not centre out a struggler that could use some resilience?
How to get to "get behind the scenes" in their lives?
Great resource - The Gift of Failure by @jesslahey. I read it a couple years back now, but this was one of the more insightful books I’ve read in years past. #resiliencechat
Because I was bullied relentlessly K-8 and because I am the grand daughter of Jews who escaped Eastern Europe, I am very concerned about social justice pertaining to immigration and other issues. #resiliencechat
Most of the time, the strugglers ARE the ones acting out. And nobody has taught or modeled resilience to them. That’s where you can get energized - show them. Talk about it. Discuss failure. #resiliencechat
Mainly what is on my mind is the fact that I had this epiphany when I was in 8th grade. I was in the lunch line when it occurred to me I either could become a bully or I could choose the road of compassion. #resiliencechat
#resiliencechat TY for the wonderful chat! I hope for everyone to have a successful school year! TY for helping me understand I don't have to do this alone.
#resiliencechat thank you for tonight. It was different to think of topics. Nice to be outside the box but I think I really prefer the q&a. Lol
Love to the peeps! Have a great night all! 🍉💖
