Roman from Ontario, Canada. HA Teacher/Student Success Leader/Agent of Transformation. Great to check in with #formativechat tonight. Let’s create risk takers and innovators by empowering them through learning and assessment.
Hey Yasmin! Welcome :) I have a friend applying there right now! I hope you have a great time! There's lot of excellent educators to learn with here! #formativechat
A1: Ss can risk-take more through feedback that challenges them to try or add something that will make them go outside their comfort zone, but benefit them as a learner. #formativechat
A1 You need to give feedback that encourages learning, curiosity and risk taking. Let’s go beyond superficial comments (good job, study more) and give meaningful support to keep challenging & pushing learning. Encourage divergent/deep/critical thinking. #formativechat

A1: Transparency. I make a point of showing my notes when conferencing or giving feedback. Kids will almost always assume they are being evaluated unless we show them otherwise. Risk-taking comes when they feel safe. #formativechat
A1 Feedback emphasizes the journey not the destination. It's not all about right or wrong but more about the process and embraces mistakes as learning opportunities not obstacles. #formativechat
A1. give feedback that sparks curiosity and motivates Ss to ask "why". If you keep them curious, they will begin to take risk w/o realizing it. To them, it's not a risk... it's part of their learning. #formativechat
A1: Giving feedback that encourages students to get out of their comfort zone can motivate them to take risks. Giving ideas on how to do something in a different way would be useful in getting them to take risks as well. #formativechat
Hey Mariana, thanks for joining again. I LOVE all the ideas you've been sharing in our Community Center recently! @pamela_renea just gave you a shout-out in her #goformative webinar today for that #edpuzzle appsmash magic! #formativechat
A1 In my feedback on writing, I start by saying back what seemed important to the student in the piece. I also acknowledge what they tried to do—creative interpretations, poetic devices, imaginative connections—even if they didn’t quite accomplish their goals.
#formativechat
A1: Constructively focus on not just what was done right but what could be improved. Be specific and personal, not vague and open ended. #formativechat
A1: I’ve noticed the importance of personalized/individualized feedback. As I transition to a more student centered class, I work with Ss more 1:1 and see how the reception shifts and I learn what works best #formativechat
A1: Encourage risk-taking by modelling it myself. Always trying out new tech, resources, etc. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When you model the process of learning over results, Ss buy in. #formativechat
A1: demo mistakes and corrections to help build an atmosphere that embraces trying over not-failing. Then positive but challenging feedback will be taken as a learning experience rather than chastising. Tone is big- ‘Great mistake, now where can it take us’ #formativechat
A1: Provide feedback that elicits a response. Resist the urge to do the thinking for them, but instead leads them to deepen their thinking. #formativechat
Me too, really enjoy the opps to interact with them each day, learn abt their interests, help support as they work and build peer collab skills too #formativechat
A1. I think it's important that Ss see you taking risk with feedback. Everything that happens in your class is feedback. Everything. Do you take risks based on that? Ss need to see that modeled, and know that is is both ok, and expected #formativechat

A1 During the writing process, my feedback usually consists of questions about where they are as student-writers and where they are with the particular piece of writing. Asking questions, rather than giving directions, empowers them to choose what they do.
#formativechat
A1: we can encourage risk taking by appreciating it and valuing it. If we laud effort & its impact on the work, on confidence etc., then students may be more inclined to take risks & not fear failure so much that it stifles effort #formativechat
A1: Check that feedback is geared towards praising learning through failure, make sure that failure is encouraged and seen as necessary for growth. It's part of the process. #formativechat
A1: Also it makes it difference if you use mastery grading so that way kids are more willing to try and fail since it’s where they end up and not the mistakes along the way that matter #formativechat
A1. There is an element here of being honest w/ your Ss. If you want them to take risks... you HAVE to let them know that a test grade and memorization is not at the top of your agenda. Have the conversation with Ss about why you want something different #formativechat
That is what I think about when I look at this problem. https://t.co/Uh1WWWbLPA Normally it would be get it right or wrong but not really know if they understood #formativechat
A2: The more open ended something is, the more opportunities for risk taking. Choice boards in their myriad varieties are great for that. #formativechat
Great point. Many have the belief that learning = memorizing. Students and teachers. We have to move past this. It’s more what do we do with our knowledge. Application and critical thinking. #formativechat

Even if the test or grade doesn’t top our agendas, it might top theirs. We can teach them to relate to scores and grades more flexibly. They might not stop caring, but the score doesn’t have to govern their behavior. They can choose. #formativechat
A2: When a student can choose how they learn, it allows them to be more engaged with whatever they are learning and make deeper connections that are interesting to them. #formativechat
It doesn't. SS choice is just a pick from what teachers want to see. Student voice is where they can bring themselves into the classroom #formativechat
A2: I used to do a project where students had to design an item that could be sold in a museum gift shop based on their chosen topic to research. The results were incredible because there were so little parameters as to what to create. #formativechat
A2 Ss choice is a risk ! It is that simple. Will they choose to push themselves?
will they choose to be lazy ? Won't know if we don't try #whitmanwtps#formativechat
A2: By allowing Ss to choose how they present their work to the class, they take risks by not having a specific guideline for how the project must be. Giving Ss options challenges them to discover new ways to present knowledge & to dig deeper #formativechat
A2 It allows for a student to find something that start more in their comfort zone and through feedback take them beyond. More ownership = more risk-taking and engagement. #formativechat
A2- Giving Ss a choice puts them in the driver's seat from the start. They chose it because they are interested in some part of it. Encourage that curiosity, don't discourage it. #formativechat
A2: If students are able to choose how they do an assignment or task then they will have the freedom to experiment with different resources and choose one that they believe is interesting and useful. #formativechat
A1: Having a conversation w/ Ss abt their work shows you are interested & that you show value in their work. Asking qs that are reflective help Ss look at their work in a diff way, not just their way. #formativechat
A2: Student choice = an increase in ownership of their own learning. As adults we don't want to be told what to read and write all the time. Kids don't either! #formativechat
A2 Kids naturally love to take risks. Think of learning to walk, ride a bike, playing video games. Education removes the safe environment to risk taking. Allow students to challenge & push limits. Allow them to try things. Support them. Help them learn. #formativechat
#stuchoice is huge, and they need as many options for this as we can provide, encourage some risk taking and then work thru challenges and new goal setting #formativechat
A2: If students choose a task, they may be more inclined to stick with it than if it is imposed on them. If they develop their own curiosities & wonderings about the task, they may become so engrossed/engaged that they lose fear of failure. #formativechat
A2: We’re always more willing to make effort with something we enjoy or choose. It;’s why the same kid who quits in class after one effort will watch Mario fall 16 times and try again a 17th slightly adjusting their tactics. It’s why in #GBL Game Over=try again #formativechat
A2: Too often education is just doing what the T wants. #inquiry based assignments give Ss freedom to explore and display their learning how they want to #formativechat
A2: When students have choice they take ownership! They begin to realize that their decisions will have an impact on them! Student choice isn’t only about picking what you like...it’s about evaluating choices and understanding yourself!#formativechat
Hey Mariana, thanks for joining again. I LOVE all the ideas you've been sharing in our Community Center recently! @pamela_renea just gave you a shout-out in her #goformative webinar today for that #edpuzzle appsmash magic! #formativechat
A2. Ss choice is fundamental to change . It embodies changing education from the ground up, and not the top down. Ss interest and passion is one of the most under-utilized tools we have. It is overlooked way too often for the sake of "top down" policy #formativechat
A2 I have seen the most success when giving Ss choices for their book talks, I have lot less Ss standing in front of class just reciting the back of the book #whitmanwtps#formativechat
A2: Students must want to engage before learning and risk-taking happens. School shouldn’t be a place where things are ‘done to them’. Choice empowers students. #formativechat
A2 Student choice doesn’t necessarily promote risk-taking. They often choose what’s comfortable, fun, easy, or of passing interest but not genuine importance to them. We need to help them notice how their assignments connect to their values.
#formativechat
A1. Ss need to understand why leveling up is important and how feedback makes them better and helps them level up. We all get to play the game it’s about wanting them to be their best #formativechat

A2: If students are given the opportunity to choose their path, they have taken ownership of their learning and will be more inclined to take some risks #formativechat
A3: If the T sees students working up to a new level of understanding, come up with a challenge and take the risk of changing the lesson for a day or more. #formativechat
A3. Your classes have to be driven by relationships and experiences, not content and standards. Doing this creates a culture of risk-taking, curiosity, and creativity #formativechat
A2: Agency is critical in intrinsically motivating learners. If I can control what and how I demonstrate mastery, I'm more likely to be engaged and to be willing to take risks. #formativechat
Yes, you can still teach the curriculum and standards through strategies, skills, and risk-taking that will extend outside the classroom walls after graduation. #formativechat
A3. Your classes have to be driven by relationships and experiences, not content and standards. Doing this creates a culture of risk-taking, curiosity, and creativity #formativechat
A3 We need focus less on content and more on skills and competencies. Be flexible in the time that is given to help each child learn. Learning should not be variable, so let time be. Push kids to question, reflect, analyze. Let them ask more questions. #formativechat
A2 authentic #studentchoice embracing learning new things and following their passions allows for more effective, meaningful, and deeper learning #formativechat
Allowing for anonymity and reducing fear of failure encourages risk-taking and free-thinking! The ‘hide names’ feature when displaying student responses creates a safety-net to encourage every student to participate fearlessly! #formativechat
A3: Letting students come up with ways they can demonstrate their own mastery, create more open-ended rubrics. Don't focus on details, but big picture when assessing, most importantly teachers need to promote a flexible culture! #formativechat
A3: Knowing and allowing the time to go in the direction the Ss want to go. Whatever curious noticing (sp in science) the students have can be weaved into the lesson even if it was not what you planned for that day. #formativechat
A3: Passion projects! When Ts give Ss time to diving into their own curiosities, risks are taken and the class becomes engaged in their own learning #formativechat
A3 - Get away from the idea that all Ss learn everything at the same rate/pace. Just b/c a S gets (or does not get) one topic quickly does not mean they will get every topic at the same rate. #formativechat
A3 Understand what the desired outcomes are and have a variety of indicators to illustrate that the outcome was reached. Use a tool like @goformative to check for understanding and make adaptations/changes w/ the quick data provided. #formativechat
A3: By doing some risk-taking of our own we can create the conditions for students to do the same. Just like with students, we must remind ourselves to find new ways of learning and trying out ideas. Flexibility and innovation are the core of good teaching. #formativechat
A3: Learning cannot be standardized in an inflexible timeline. Ss learn at varying rates, so the learning activities should reflect that variation. These lessons should connect to the Ss depth of learning. #formativechat
Allow for #differentiation of intro material (video, text, etc) and of student demonstration of mastery (essay, presentation #PBL, etc) both for allowing choice and aiding struggling learners to play to their strengths #formativechat
A3 We can create assignments that are open-ended enough that students can connect their work to what matters to them, but defined enough that they understand and can meet expectations.
#formativechat
Yes... curriculum and standards are important, but the relationships you build and experience you create, within that curriculum, is that reaches out and touches Ss... not the curriculum itself #formativechat
A3: Assess Ss when they're ready for it, not just when it fits best into our schedule. Important to take risks but I still wouldn't jump out of a plane without a parachute #formativechat
A3: If the T sees students working up to a new level of understanding, come up with a challenge and take the risk of changing the lesson for a day or more. #formativechat
A3. Build in ways for Ss to have more autonomy over their day. Maybe they can choose the order to complete assignments or participate in Ss lead book clubs. Little by little choice becomes a driving force behind how Ss learn and motivation and effort increase #formativechat
A3 differentiation and just going with the flow. Lesson plans aren’t rigid structures but flexible ones. They’re designed to be reflected on. #formativechat
A3: Teachers need to remain on task by teaching and giving assignments to meet standards and they also need to let students learn and show their growth in ways that can fit the students learning style and interests. #formativechat
Risk-taking must be connected to strategies for recovering from failure. Ss encouraged to view failure as past of mastery. To try, to fail, to receive feedback, and to try once again! #formativechat
A3: We can remain flexible by being focused on the learning goal, embedding risk taking as a goal, leaving spaces for student choice and voice, requiring incremental steps, process work, metacognition, feedback and do-overs #formativechat
A3: Assess Ss when they're ready for it, not just when it fits best into our schedule. Important to take risks but I still wouldn't jump out of a plane without a parachute #formativechat
Yes, this…then it is their learning and not obedience to some plan formulated by a district or textbook company. Not only will it increase their engagement, but their retention of info as well. #formativechat
Allowing for anonymity and reducing fear of failure encourages risk-taking and free-thinking! The ‘hide names’ feature when displaying student responses creates a safety-net to encourage every student to participate fearlessly! #formativechat
Thank you for a great #formativechat Enjoyed the learning and discussion. Hope everyone has an amazing week. Let’s celebrate all teachers. You do incredible work!
Agree with you. I believe half the curriculum walks in when our students do. Too often we cut corners to make it easier on us and harder on our Ss. Time to be the change! #formativechat
I love this practical idea to encourage risk-taking! When you let students take greater ownership over discussions, you promote risk-taking! #formativechat
Thanks for joining #formativechat everyone! Special shout-out to my fellow host @Rdene915 ! Also, it was great to see so many #goformative Certified Educators tonight!
Wait, what? With all the tools we now have to differentiate! One could say that we can now create a real individualized plan for every student, even when you have 150+ #formativechat
💡 Hand the reigns over to the Ss!! Allow THEM to initiate questioning threads and see where it goes! Nothin’ wrong with a little risk-taking & TRUST on the Ts part, too!! #formativechat
Yes. Ts and Schools tend to stick to what is easy for them and not what is best for the Ss. Like...scheduling all Ss in same Gr lvl for Math/Science. Why? Just b/c they are same age does not mean they have same understanding of content. #formativechat
YES. We have to do more than give students opportunities to take risks. Like anything else we expect, we need to teach risk-taking. Why take a risk? How can they take risks? When is the risk worthwhile? When isn’t it? #formativechat
I learned all about how to encourage risk-taking through feedback, how student feedback allows for risk-taking, and how to create lessons that allow for risk-taking. The tips that were shared were helpful and gave me new ideas for incorporating technology #CI2300#formativechat
ALL STUDENT MINDS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL! 🙌🏻💡🙌🏻 Thank goodness, right!? Give CHOICE so that visual learners may CONFIDENTLY express themselves visually, auditory- orally, etc, etc... #formativechat
Sorry I missed #formativechat tonight! It’s tech week for our production of The Oresteia at school, and I couldn’t fit it into the schedule. Looking forward to joining next time!
