WELCOME to , where we're talking about ditching textbooks!
Name? Location? Role? For fun: favorite late-night snack???
Hey Join us as we welcome GM to right now!
Cindy Arthur Carl Sandburg College technology assistant halos
Good evening, ! Matt here, author of Ditch That Textbook () from Ind.
I LOVE cereal late at night. I know. Weird. :)
As the official model of I approve this chat
Welcome. I got confused since I live in Carl Sandburg HS district. (and I get confused easily)
Let's talk ditching textbooks in . Going on right now!
Q1: What is the relationship you and your students have with textbooks?
Where are all our friends?
J.D. Williams - Instructional Coach - south Phoenix .. ice cream is a good snack right?
Hopefully not all offline reading their textbooks ...
How did I know would bring out tonight? Where's our crew? We've got a Rock Star GM in on
Ice cream may be the BEST late night snack JD. Can't go wrong.
Welcome J.D. I have a feeling I'll be joining you for ice cream in a few minutes.
A1: I found in my HS Spanish classes that ?s/activities in textbooks weren't helping them become fluent in the language.
Hey ... when you were in the classroom, what did you teach?
I'm proud to say we sang kumbaya to the truck & trailer that hauled off our textbooks this year https://t.co/oD7dHgMmTi
Q1: What is the relationship you and your students have with textbooks?
A1: I don't have a class of students, but all of our textbooks (except Social Studies) will have online access by next year
A1. We have several instructors who have been textbook free for over a year. Students like the savings
YES!!! Brittanni, you guys are my heroes! How has that been since? https://t.co/F0MWTMUpPp
I'm proud to say we sang kumbaya to the truck & trailer that hauled off our textbooks this year https://t.co/oD7dHgMmTi
Q1: What is the relationship you and your students have with textbooks?
A1: Unfortunately some text book publishers think photos/pdfs of their books means online access :(
Great step! Interesting. I've found SS has some of the best primary docs/resources online.
A1: I would use my textbook as a resource like anything else, but used it less and less as years went on. Too many other sources
I taught 6th grade for quite awhile and then taught 7th at an accelerated school, so 8th standards.
Ditched them. Built a website. Authentic resources for la clause de español
A1) I teach 9th grade world history and we haven't had a textbook for 2 years now
Area school district williamsfield is serving as an ambassador for our area
Yep ... with so much access to great stuff online -- and it continually grows -- the txt is less and less relevant.
Great job. My Ts concern right now is what do we do without supplemental resources from Pearson?
Carol! We're kindred spirits! I built a website and delivered content there and linked to others. Sweet! https://t.co/TAwf0jZZGG
Ditched them. Built a website. Authentic resources for la clause de español
A1: We use them when we lose internet access, or when Ss don't have access at home. Last resort.
Q2: How will content delivery/engagement change in the future in classrooms?
a few Ts struggling w/ letting them go. Overall super positive & amazing things have been happening w/o the crutch
I think we have the best supplemental resource ever created. It's called the Internet. https://t.co/QBXKfP3SFW
Great job. My Ts concern right now is what do we do without supplemental resources from Pearson?
A2: Teachers have to let go of some of the "control". Realize they don't need to be giving all of the information. Facilitate.
My fave "no textbooks story" is . New class. Txtbks didn't show. He just started teaching. Never looked back.
A2: Ts more as facilitators & class is more Student Lead.
My daughter's physics teacher did the same thing & the best part was - they didn't even have devices!
Good call JD. We won't be the pathway to info in students' future. Need to cultivate those skills. https://t.co/xKCDfO4YjO
A2: Teachers have to let go of some of the "control". Realize they don't need to be giving all of the information. Facilitate.
The workbooks, handouts, review questions for the chapters/sections, etc..
A2: Also more student creation that isn't "make a slideshow and stand in front of the class and present it". Present digitally.
4th grade student teacher from VA! So excited for my first twitter chat!
A2) I am hoping eventually content "delivery" in HS social studies is totally phased out and Ss create products using Research
YES! Open ed resources are great start, but when Ss create, they're learning a lifelong skill. https://t.co/yMlnUgrDOj
Although I would like to host a "Death to Worksheets" party. SOON!
I love Google Classroom!! There is so much you can do with it and it is so easy to use!
A2: Ts are allowed more room for creativity which in turn generates authentic student engagement https://t.co/2yVNtlKnKH
Q2: How will content delivery/engagement change in the future in classrooms?
Hey, no judging here! :) Mine is purpose-driven, not beauty-driven!
We are using it in almost every classroom 2-8. Ease of use to distribute & collect is a great start.
Re: letting students publish/create ... A student-created digital textbook: Their process and resources https://t.co/i3p9625u48
This is my main goal right now within the school (& beyond) encourage Ts to create more authentic & engaging lessons
A2: Books take up to much space. Great 4 paper weights, if u still use paper. Even lit. can be found on line.
Have you heard of ? Sounds up your alley! It's our chat topic tomorrow 9pmCDT https://t.co/WeynHw5TGN
Although I would like to host a "Death to Worksheets" party. SOON!
Q2: There's already a big push for more hands on, student led lessons where students have more of a say in their learning.
Yes, definitely more flipped classroom style.
Textbooks are great for building. Use them with hot wheels ramps
A2) Students need to read, write and collaborate each class period. They deliver their own content
Q3: What are your go-to places to find content for your class? Why do you like them?
I used the term "alternative" assessment on Twitter & got roasted. It's just "assessment"
This is a great point!
Some Ss prefer reading paper books via digital. What are your thoughts?
A2: Ss become experts & their presentations become instruction 4 class. Ss made tutorials how I assess knowledge otherwise.
A3 YouTube has most answers.
Such polyphonic working may lie in the population.
A3: World Wide Web, .gov. edu. online journals, newspapers, magz & simply asking Ss, hey, anyone know how to ____ w/ a comp?
A3 well a questiony answer anyway!...Wondering if you use your school librarian, (so hoping you have one), for content
as a former science teacher, textbooks are killing science & the natural exploration that comes w/the content.
I'm a ST in VA in 3rd & I always go to the curriculum framework found on the states ed site. Great for guiding my lessons.
Pinterest has transformed my teaching
I had Ss create presentations & made the mistake of testing other Ss on those presentations. Why? They were experts.
If Ss prefer paper b/c they learn better, give them paper by Ss created books online, and print it out.
BOOM! >>> " textbooks are killing science & the natural exploration that comes w/the content." https://t.co/d8VCo2zmbI
as a former science teacher, textbooks are killing science & the natural exploration that comes w/the content.
I am all about that Teachers Pay Teachers!!
I'm putting this on a poster and hanging them in our science hall in the morning.
A3) SHEG Reading like a Hist is great for SS Ts. Also is the best thing to happen to Geography class ever
our science teacher just did that. Each kid had a standard and recorded using Screencastify. Worked well!
What a concept -- a media expert to help you find media! https://t.co/FxcuZsdSpb
A3 well a questiony answer anyway!...Wondering if you use your school librarian, (so hoping you have one), for content
Yeah..and from a media expert herself!
students also each made a google form about the content for quick assessment.
Our Ss created iBooks about a specific genetic disorder Included to show HOW it occurred
Students don't learn through textbooks so why would we teach through text books?
unfortunately we are too. Our tests are reading based though. So we do reading comprehension using Hist docs
As an AP, Twitter has allowed me to find a lot of info for PD sessions.
Q4: How are learning management systems (LMS) making things better and/or worse?
That's the key - they own the deeper knowledge on the big idea. Do they need to test on basic content?
That's d best. When Ss graduate they won't even remember a single thing abt their txtbks but Ts they will. https://t.co/htsVdNEh2k
My fave "no textbooks story" is . New class. Txtbks didn't show. He just started teaching. Never looked back.
Textbooks were made for a different time and a different kind of education.
It's time to evolve!
Using the enhanced scope and sequence lesson plans from VDOE, but changing them to fit my class
A4: Use your media specialist to check out video cameras, iPods & chargers, laptops if UR not yet 1:1
A3) teachers find your content using Twitter chats on your subject . is always happening!
I have over 10,000 pins just for my Spanish classes. I've been to P headquarters . Hire me, P!
Q3: Near Pod, PBS, You Tube, and Pinterest! They give ideas that I tweak!
How are you making sure that info students are using is quality..a lot of CRAP out there!
A4: LMS makes it better to push any material out at any time. Also worse b/c worksheets are easy to push out.
I'll be a first year teacher in the Fall, what is LMS?
A4: honestly we need 2 assess multiple times a class, that doesn't mean all need to result in grades.
Part of the bigger picture. Our librarian teaches & promotes research skills. Ts reinforce them in every class.
Learning Management system...no prob!
Learning Management System.. something like Edmodo, Moodle.. possibly Google Classroom ..
Learning Management System - like Blackboard, Schoology, Canvas, etc..
love reading like a historian. ✔️
As a practicum T, I wasn't given txtbooks to use, so now as a paid T should we start? https://t.co/7E30Yb3lAZ
My fave "no textbooks story" is . New class. Txtbks didn't show. He just started teaching. Never looked back.
Glad you could join us tonight. Hope you enjoy connecting with passionate educators who won't stand for status quo.
This is a good point! I think we're pretty good judges as Ts. If Ss use crap content, teachable moment! https://t.co/lNLp6VTNEb
How are you making sure that info students are using is quality..a lot of CRAP out there!
A4 worse. Makes students conformists and not look outside of system
A4) they have helped students be able to access uploaded primary sources for SS classes. So that's a plus for LMS
No reason to go back to start now. You're way ahead of the game.
YES! Self assess. Spaced repetition at diff intervals. Proven learning approaches from cognitive sci! https://t.co/ZqwhV66D0B
A4: honestly we need 2 assess multiple times a class, that doesn't mean all need to result in grades.
A4: Clear out some space for 3D printers, whiteboards, recording studios, maker spaces. Media Specialist, no longer Librarians
Focus now is clarifying how to create good pre, formative, & summative assessments & learn from data
Good point. If it's all in the "walled garden" of LMS, why walk out the gate? Wrong perspective. https://t.co/XIt4cGlJJ1
A4 worse. Makes students conformists and not look outside of system
Thanks. I've used Blackboard/Moodle & from a Ts pov it's time consuming & not user friendly. I prefer G Classroom.
Agreed. Sometimes, new Ts need framework and txtbks can help. But don't let them become a crutch!
Agreed. And teachers need to be using common assessments across grade level. Makes data more meaningful.
Great point. Make sure if you're using that you use it as a starting point. Open the gate! https://t.co/ezkH0Y9r46
A4 worse. Makes students conformists and not look outside of system
A4: Also go to LMS for coffee and snacks b/c looking like a modern day cafe in there now. VERY inviting 2 Ss. Love our LMS
we ditched our LMS for our class
A4 haven't used a LMS so wouldn't really know but this year has been GREAT w/ has made no txtbooks easier
Q5: What should the students’ role be in choosing and engaging in content?
Q4: They are a starting points for teachers that aren't sure where to start with 1:1. Then Ts can grow from there.
Agreed. They're getting better, but G Classroom isn't full LMS - yet! But it will be, especially w/ Apple classroom
A5: I think there's content to learn from and then content to use that help share learning...tell ur story
GREAT distinction here! https://t.co/NieeJ9PyfO
A5: I think there's content to learn from and then content to use that help share learning...tell ur story
A5: Ss need to have choice so they can use passion as a driving force. Ts need to allow them room to explore & grow.
we are about to start using canvas for our LMS. Can anyone give me some advice/feedback on it. Thanks. Please send as message
A5) choosing is why you have a teacher in the room. Engaging is why there are students. You facilitate and Ss create
A5: We give them the steering wheel, while we sit in the passenger's seat w/fake gas pedal and helmet 4 safety. Ss lead Period
Right! Whatever it takes. Crawl to walk to run! https://t.co/LAbQokySOI
Q4: They are a starting points for teachers that aren't sure where to start with 1:1. Then Ts can grow from there.
A5: Let them explore. Give them some bread pieces and see what they do with them. Ss are capable of amazing things!
A5: Students should play a huge role! It makes it more engaging for them and they grasp more from it.
A5 Primary sources, original research...Don't take the media as credible get to the source!
Wow. This just blew my mind re: student control! https://t.co/rkvpqvzrVt
A5: We give them the steering wheel, while we sit in the passenger's seat w/fake gas pedal and helmet 4 safety. Ss lead Period
A5: Active...Ss should be in active in finding and engaging in content
A5: we no longer get food fm cabinet. We show them where the stool is so they can get the food themselves after we are gone.
A5 Incredibly difficult to know what's accurate when presidential candidates share inaccurate info!
Always encourage Ss to chose activities catering to their learning style. Not all Ss learn the same
Bread pieces? I'm curious about this now ... https://t.co/JLZQMqeNr2
A5: Let them explore. Give them some bread pieces and see what they do with them. Ss are capable of amazing things!
That's why our classrooms need to change. We can't be engaging in rows.
A5: Use metaphors to tell story, engage audience
Yes! Definitely one way to get owners! :)
So give them something small and see where they take it. Ex: "How would you set up your own country?"
Q6: Open educational resources make high-quality, open, free content available. Benefits/drawbacks?
Oh my goodness, metaphors! Yes! A great metaphor organizes my confusion beautifully. https://t.co/sDpR44eqs3
A5: Use metaphors to tell story, engage audience
A5)this is difficult when a state creates an exam worth 25% of their grade and it's 50 multiple choice ?s
LOVE IT! Also gives opportunity for expressing opinion and creativity. Big picture stuff. https://t.co/JNflKcafzJ
So give them something small and see where they take it. Ex: "How would you set up your own country?"
A6: This is where my Ts are stuck. Moving away from publisher resources. Creating their own takes TIME. Middle Ground? Anyone?
A6: drawback would be using them as a textbook substitute. Benefit is more options to chose from https://t.co/JYyRdSpeMO
Q6: Open educational resources make high-quality, open, free content available. Benefits/drawbacks?
Start small. Scoop.it w/good resources. Kahoots/Quizizzes create in minutes. Then progress! https://t.co/XY2jDOx0zz
A6: This is where my Ts are stuck. Moving away from publisher resources. Creating their own takes TIME. Middle Ground? Anyone?
A6: Some teachers will use content without knowing it well. At least when they create it, they know it!
A6 Benefit - FREE! Drawback - it's someone else's resources & lessons if not careful could end up using as txtbooks
I have a message for states that require tests like that to measure what Ss know. Lucky my mommy told me to be nice!
Right Sean! Digital texts are still texts if used in the same old ways. Mindset shift needed! https://t.co/jGF8RlkHfe
A6 Benefit - FREE! Drawback - it's someone else's resources & lessons if not careful could end up using as txtbooks
A6: Benefits: Sooooo much choice! Relevance! Up-2-Date / Cons: Must show Ss how 2 ID trusted data! Researched based sources.
Like that old maxim, teaching it is the best form of learning it! https://t.co/dCSqDZvG7u
A6: Some teachers will use content without knowing it well. At least when they create it, they know it!
A6: Won't be textbk if allows students to dig deep.
that's true, never thought of it like that
Can be a con, but SUCH a valuable life skill! Teachable moments! https://t.co/YwQPVkfaGc
A6: Benefits: Sooooo much choice! Relevance! Up-2-Date / Cons: Must show Ss how 2 ID trusted data! Researched based sources.
You got that right but then they have them forever & just will need to tweak. Get Ts to buy in & crowdsource
baby steps. Have them make a small goal for moving away from publisher. Then let them grow from there.
a6: Won;t be textbook if allow student to ask own questions
Going to be interesting when Amazon opens & Ts have time to create more of their own resources.
Ts need to collaborate more, and not think they have to create it all on their own. Lean on each other!
I think the way our subjects are setup -so disjunct -needs to change before we can fully figure out how to use EdTech correctly
Definitely!! Stop the silos!
We know our students better than a textbook publisher 1000's of miles away. Why let them make all the decisions???
I taught 7th gr with the same students all day. Made the cross-curricular stuff easy. Lot of prep work though.
When teachers r ok with slamming kids with hours of homework but complain when asked 2 learn on their own?
Crowdsource is key. Too many Ts have been locked away in their room for too long. Need to be connected https://t.co/vnnc7auOxX
You got that right but then they have them forever & just will need to tweak. Get Ts to buy in & crowdsource
Q7: Textbooks are about consuming content. How can we get students CREATING instead?
have students help in the creation process!
Right! Like quote, In real life, it's collaboration. In school it's cheating! https://t.co/dxj2pAijBm
Ts need to collaborate more, and not think they have to create it all on their own. Lean on each other!
A6: sometimes a pre-made lesson doesn't fit our students. We may need to tweak it so that it fits our Ss personalities.
Hard to teach what you don't know. Tough for a newer elem T like me w/ 5 subjects & creating has helped https://t.co/uMhFfDzjtQ
A6: Some teachers will use content without knowing it well. At least when they create it, they know it!
Most of their existing resources will transfer. We're not changing content - we're changing where they get it.
It's ridiculous to ask a Googler, "Did you write that code all by yourself? W/no resources and no partner?"
I've started working with the 9th grade science and English teachers to create lessons we all have a part in
Do I want to complete a worksheet on the digestive system or create a video showing how it works?
You got to ditch the lone wolf mentality! No teacher can be an island either! Be infectious! https://t.co/vGeV48eX85
Crowdsource is key. Too many Ts have been locked away in their room for too long. Need to be connected https://t.co/vnnc7auOxX
You got that right but then they have them forever & just will need to tweak. Get Ts to buy in & crowdsource
A6: U can instruct, and let the Ss decide how they want to demonstrate their knowledge 2 u. Data is more accurate that way.
keep plugging away in small steps. 5 subjects need a lot of prep time. The pre-made stuff can be good too!
Important point here! Lots of preps = limited time. Survival is a must, and we act accordingly! https://t.co/jQtanswQr9
keep plugging away in small steps. 5 subjects need a lot of prep time. The pre-made stuff can be good too!
A7: Hello, from Springdale, AR! Ss learn to create their own content after THEY have spent the time looking for it themself
Some Ts have been burned many times - doing 90% of the work while other Ts are leaches. Bad feelings create walls.
students can create content for others to learn from -my 7th graders just published a book for the zoo
Yes !! More teachers need to talk and work with each other . Share share share
Amen! open them doors&Start talking. Ts can't hold Ss to a higher standard than most Ts do for 1 another https://t.co/xhoul6V5q0
Ts need to collaborate more, and not think they have to create it all on their own. Lean on each other!
A7: Synthesis is the hardest part. Figuring out how to take the info overload and find their voice to make it their own
Hey Mickey! My G+ guru! Great point. Turn it all over to the Ss! https://t.co/wsGliIB74s
A7: Hello, from Springdale, AR! Ss learn to create their own content after THEY have spent the time looking for it themself
A7: get them to create as they learn: hyperdocs, screencasts, podcast, pics, video
those people that tell you it'll get easier are liars because you'll always want to tweak something ;)
WOW! Really?!?!? Details please?!?!? https://t.co/VxSvuAP1YY
students can create content for others to learn from -my 7th graders just published a book for the zoo
Thanks! Glad you could join us tonight.
oh absolutely!! It is hard for ts to let go of the control of teaching the content. Setting small goals helps. 👍🏼
I know! For 11yrs I haven't been able to let my curriculum rest. Always reworking it.
You're not allowed to throw that grenade out there and just walk away! That's awesome!
I'm mostly kidding. It does get easier. ;)
A7: model and then give them room to create. Redefine failure. Don't be afraid to have fun. https://t.co/PZDmDq5quO
Q7: Textbooks are about consuming content. How can we get students CREATING instead?
I'm never satisfied & always looking for ways to improve!
Q8: What are the best examples of teaching/learning WITHOUT textbooks in your class?
Help them learn the balance between facilitation, direct instruction, & coaching. Direct Instruct will soon go away
A7: Tech allows us to teach to the extent that they can apply to real world application. They shouldn't need us when we R done.
RIGHT! If we want students to do it, we should be willing too. Get shoulder to shoulder w/Ss. https://t.co/k3uEK0kM6A
A7: model and then give them room to create. Redefine failure. Don't be afraid to have fun. https://t.co/PZDmDq5quO
Q7: Textbooks are about consuming content. How can we get students CREATING instead?
A7 We have to give them TIME to dig deepl, to understand, in order to create new meaning
This is the pinnacle of a student-centered classroom! Love it Patti. https://t.co/aMOSewh0Gd
A7: Tech allows us to teach to the extent that they can apply to real world application. They shouldn't need us when we R done.
Learning and creating w/ real world application. What an awesome experience https://t.co/8aSwbxPOJ0
students can create content for others to learn from -my 7th graders just published a book for the zoo
A8: Break out edu- hands on and solving mysteries!
A8: Love when our Latin Ss work in small groups to break down sentences & paragraphs as teams. So engaged.
Holy cow, all the life skills in ... prob solving, teamwork, creativity, etc. GREAT lesson! https://t.co/BFDYdDkdZa
A8: Break out edu- hands on and solving mysteries!
A8 Students worked on a lipdub organized by viewed on the ISS. All they wanted to do was learn about space after that
A8: Started engineering class this yr. Love watching Ss truly problem solve & critically think. Not just wait for answer from T
Sorry about A5 tweet..not sure why it just came up?
A8: creating info-graphs over a challenge that people in Africa are facing. Students include their solution to the problem.
A8: Digital Restaurant Menus, Garment making, Learning chemical reactions via pancakes! YUM and YUM https://t.co/9YGzFf7vRy
lol! I'm so proud of them! Love students doing real, purposeful work changes the classroom! :)
Some would look at a lipdub as silliness. Look at the impact it had in the end! https://t.co/pHS6mzy0HE
A8 Students worked on a lipdub organized by viewed on the ISS. All they wanted to do was learn about space after that
A8: I love having Ss do the , such a great springboard for them to find content more personalized to them than a text book.
A8 finding & documenting polygons, angles, lines all over the school grounds to prove "when will we need to use this again"
the Wrld Hist classes get the gym. We simulate the Somme by playing and then they write\share war stories
we were able to talk w animal experts from Cambodia, Thailand, &South Africa- kids learned so much
