Welcome to ! Glad you could join us. I’ll be your moderator for tonight. We are going to take a critical look at flipped learning.
Tonight we will be discussing whether the flip’s a flop (see what I did there? lol)
While I know you probably have some thoughts about the fab or fad debate on flipped learning, let’s start with some introductions.
Hi , I was so anxious for tonight's chat that I showed up an hour early! The problem of living/working in two time zones!
Is it just you and me tonight??
I'm here too! Excited to hear people's idea.
I'm beginning to wonder that too. Surely not everyone is at . peeps are you there?
Hello hope all are having a great week & getting back in the grove Curt - Seymour
The others must be partying in Florida.
For those new to the chats and potentially lurking, follow the hashtag and look for my questions (written as Q1, Q2, etc.).
Give your thoughts on these questions using the hashtag on every tweet and R1, R2 for your respective responses.
Q1: Let’s start off by sharing stories of flipped learning we see in our buildings (good, bad, or indifferent).
I teach and we moved to a this semester
Hi ...I'm here! Greetings everyone!
Hi . What an exciting time of the SY for you. We look forward to your new Ss joining in some time.
Hi, !!! :-) I'm joining for a bit tonight, but I'll be in and out!
Little late, but I'm here. :)
Small world! I teach W200 for . Welcome!
I know I am jealous of all that got to go
R1: In our district, the emphasis is on instead of flipped.
Hi We just completed final exams today Tomorrow is just teacher day!
For those just jumping on, Q1 is to share flipped classroom experiences… good or bad. What are you seeing/experiencing?
Hey my people. Getting caught up on laundry & dishes while keeping an eye on the chat.
Participating in another chat but will be checking in w/ periodically - compelling topic.
Did you know flipped learning is one of the many types of blended learning?
I teach 8th gr math, use flipped learning tomorrow when I go to a conference. In this case it is 'in' the classroom not out
R1 a bit unique since I'm not in a school, but the examples are out there. Starting w/the bad-"flipping" without shifting pedagogy
R1 I think the thing I'm most concerned is that some of my students aren't watching the videos before class (less than 15 mins)
R1: We have some Ts using them for sub plans, but I want to use it for more library things and PD next year. Here to get ideas!
On that note though, the more disruptive models do seem to be the focus as opposed to flipping.
R1 A short video clip can provide a great intro to engage learners before the next day's lesson
R1 I love flip instruction. I've been doing it for a few years now.
I think I thought of it the other way-- blended as semi-flipped.
Interesting use of flipping the classroom!
With blended learning, , are there any Ts taking advantage of "flipped" and no longer using whole class lecture model?
Interesting thought. Hadn’t thought of it that way.
R1: We have admins flipping PD
Curious -as sub plans, do you mean the sub just makes sure class is watching video during class time?
Principal flips his staff meetings to have more time to collaborate and ask questions with staff
R1 - so interesting! How does that work?
We touched on Q2 a bit already…
R1, We had to over come the classic "I had no internet access" heard it so often build https://t.co/MVRUC0wwk8 shows where to go!
Q2: Do you think flipped learning is growing or has it fizzled from your perspective? Why?
R1: Like a lot of other learning approaches, Ss have preferences...biggest complaint from Ss is that 'teacher' isn't 'teaching'
Our Ts have put a lot of effort into personalizing/blending. Not much whole-group going on now.
This makes me happy! It demonstrates that they value teachers' time. Are meetings more collab as a result? https://t.co/UcDXCwF8r9
R1: We have admins flipping PD
Usually with a video embedded in a Google Form - responses are used to drive discussion
Are you finding flipping more successful with adults than students?
Have heard that from a few Ps in local district regarding flipped HS math. My kids are elementary age so no pers exp
that's the goal-even when you use flipped learning as a strategy. Very cool.
Is that from an antiquated view of what teaching is or is it something that is missing from the F2F time?
Or embedding response in first box of debate carousel activity to complete at f2f meeting
. Would have an email or questions to check for understanding with flip PD
I've heard that from parents I sense it reflects what's NOT happening in F2F time. Ts should be freed to do more 1:1
Lots of mention of flipped pd? Is this transferring to the classroom or is it working better with adults?
(Not an official question… just curious :))
flipping for adults & Ss have it's difficulties. Sometimes you have to update culture.
great modeling opportunity with adults to show instructional & learning benefits of flipping
R2 I think flipped classrooms are still growing and will continue as Ts and schools grow into and utilize the potential 1:1 allows
That comment often when 'flipped learning' is day after day. Maybe Ss want to ask Q's as they are learning material?
R2 I suspect the buzz has faded but that doesn't mean the strategy is less effective. It may not have been effectively intro'd
Q3: Have you seen flipped learning blended with other models (PBL, GBL, blended, etc.)? What does that look like?
In my exp, Ss get bored when presentation of material is presented in same way often. Could that be part of it?
An advantage with flip learning and tech today, Ss can contact me via email, twitter, youtube if has a questions or save for class
such a good point-and teachers who are seeking feedback from their learners could address that
A boring lecture is still a boring lecture if you have to watch it at home.
Good timing - getting ready to send a flipped mtg. out in the next day or 2 in prep for in-service next week.
R2: I think its evolving. Becoming just one of the tools in an ever expanding toolbox.
Agreed. And 1:1 F2F time is not always distributed over large classes...squeaky wheels always get more attention
As mentioned, being a popular buzz word does not equal effectiveness. Good thing to keep in mind.
And while this wouldn't sell books, it's really the main point! https://t.co/Ch9fVUKXgy
A boring lecture is still a boring lecture if you have to watch it at home.
So true, ! That's another management trick that teachers have to master! It's so much more than making videos
It's good make the flip learning interactive or have Easter eggs in the videos to keep attention
R3: I’ve always thought that PBL and flipped learning were a good match. The PBL gave purpose to the at home work.
It is best used as one of many tools, shaking things up allows all learning styles to have their 'day'.
Hey checking in a little late but so glad to be here! Love this topic! Casey Nidlinger Science Teacher Bluffton Middle School
The downside is that it might place pressure on teachers to be on-call more; young teachers desire work/life balance.
R3: The flipped part could be used in PBL to support just-in-time learning... or meet diverse needs.
my formula for video length in minutes= student age/2 +/-2 minutes
I think so! I've heard positive feedback. :)
R3: Friend of mine (diff state)had Ps complain she wasn't actually teaching anything anymore, so she no longer uses term "flip"
What are some easter eggs ideas or ways you make the more interactive? style?
Well if we are to have a true debate, we need to look at both sides. So on to Q4…
Q4: What benefits have you witnessed because of flipped learning?
whose to say that students can't have collab chats prior to class and the T helps dissect convo in class
ergh, who's not whose. Long day and lazy glance before hitting Tweet.
That’s a great idea! A useful variation.
My fav statement about flip is still from Bergman at BG workshop: it's not about the videos, but maximizing quality time w/ Ss
Love that. Keeping the main thing the main thing!
R4: Benefits--Ss who are absent miss less 'content'
R4: Another benefit is parents can see video w/content that Ss are learning.
Oops. Guess it's Bergmann. That workshop at Beech Grove was a few years ago!
It depends upon the school, the class, etc. 40 students x 6 classes = little interaction time.
- perhaps personalized memes? :) Do they get the 80's references? :)
R4: Can provide opportunities to pre-teach, spark interest, hook students, etc.
R4 Students are encouraged to ask questions (when done w/best practices)
R4 puts the teacher at home so Qs can be asked in class instead of a parent trying to answer
Good point! Helps our parents help our students. I mean, when was the last time you used algebra? https://t.co/gcRFSdM3jx
R4: Another benefit is parents can see video w/content that Ss are learning.
For that very reason, , I wish my daighter's math teachers used flipped strategy!
The math teachers are going to start throwing Twitter tomatoes at me for my last tweet. ;-)
flipping with pbl helps cut out Ts need to repeat instruction as Ss can simply re-watch, freeing up Ts to help more Ss 1:1
R3 I teach PLTW courses and have my Autodesk projects available to students to work at own pace. I'm cloned in lab!
R4: Greatest benefit to flipped learning is the extra one on one time I am able to give to my students.
This would be my second greatest benefit! Parents love this!
https://t.co/fZO03hvRKg
Good point! Helps our parents help our students. I mean, when was the last time you used algebra? https://t.co/gcRFSdM3jx

what a great way to describe a benefit of flipping. What teacher hasn't wished they could clone themself?
Yes..some videos I know to the minute:second where Ss can go to get 'content' when they ask a Q
Math doesn't change! has good math videos
has anyone allowed Ss to submit videos to be used as flipped classroom as take over a concept or lesson ?
I think we can all agree that flipped learning helps Ts make better use of their instructional time &help Ss at the critical times
, um...maybe clarify that this particular meme would not make the cut for students, LOL
R4: Another benefit is students feel ownership in their learning! Love that!
Now that's an interesting idea! https://t.co/j7Fi2g7TTw
has anyone allowed Ss to submit videos to be used as flipped classroom as take over a concept or lesson ?
Great question. You can take over from here! lol ? https://t.co/a290tpLfoS
has anyone allowed Ss to submit videos to be used as flipped classroom as take over a concept or lesson ?
sometimes that how I find out they didn't watch or know in the next video to emphasize the point more
Okay, this wouldn’t be a debate if we didn’t look at both sides… Get ready for Q5…
Q5: Under what circumstances have you seen flipped learning fail? Why did that happen?
If they follow the video directions, it should look similar https://t.co/XwhGT1yzbS
sometimes that how I find out they didn't watch or know in the next video to emphasize the point more
R5: Anytime you put the tech before the teaching, you're going to miss the mark. Like said, boring is boring.
R5: Some Ss are no more likely to watch a video than hw: in that case they miss content AND struggle with followup activities
R5 I mentioned parents who were upset with the practice. All videos were created by others-Ps felt Ss needed to hear from their T
R5 cont Videos referenced resources the Ss did not have access to
R5: When teachers don't hold students accountable for their learning!
I think that's complaint worthy.
they say all great things in moderation over flipping may lead problems of Ps wondering if your classes just to study hall
Absolutely, ! It shows that the T did not vett the material.
R5: Sometimes I don't have time to make my own video and other videos deliver more or less of what I need to be focus of lesson.
I hadn’t thought about that. There could be benefit in recreating the wheel. Interesting.
R5 When you can complete the assessments without have big to use the resources provided. Shortcuts.
I personally think you can have a balance . Ss and Ps need to hear from their T but a mix isn't bad
Q6: Find a challenge that someone posted for Q5 and share how you would address it or fix the problem.
I hope to try it soon in PLTW with inventor drawings hoping the Ss will find listening to a peer more appealing
R6: Student choice. Assessing what you want students to learn or review.
You know what, you guys are over-achievers and you kind of already answered this question in your R5s. I’ll find a better Q
Q7: Do you “flip” everything? If not, how do you choose?
R6 I love what put for R5! It reveals that Ss aren't being challenged. Solution: grade on competency, level up
R6 trying the digital office hours (to incorporate video) to explain the ideology of flipping to parents that are concerned
I think some variety is probably best, adds new flavors to the discussion (as long as you've vetted it first!)
R7 let the Ss have a choice in what work gets flipped the increased ownership will increase participation
R7 If I'm going to say the same thing more than 5 times in a day, I'll make a video
R7: I think you have to address common misconceptions after flipping.
I agree, flip the repetitive lesson. https://t.co/k6rH02m2UA
R7 If I'm going to say the same thing more than 5 times in a day, I'll make a video
Student agency can make all the difference! https://t.co/2FdwPd0WCc
R7 let the Ss have a choice in what work gets flipped the increased ownership will increase participation
R7 If I think high level Ss and low level Ss will move at different speeds, I'll make a video so they can go at their pace
R7 You flip pancakes, but you wouldn't flip muffins, so no. A little wackiness to keep on her toes
And if you teach project lead the way he has an amazing amount of quality videos! https://t.co/bHP05SjFHB
R7 If I'm going to say the same thing more than 5 times in a day, I'll make a video
Interesting, that you say after. Would you have an anticipatory discussion before?
So many ways to play on the word flipped. I really had to hold myself back tonight.
R7: If you think Ss need immediate feedback and reinforcement on complicated topic, F2F can be better than a longer video
R8: FAB with effort from everybody: Ss and Ts.
R8: It's one of many tools in our bag. Use it at the appropriate time.
R8: When done well, with intention and purpose, FAB!
