Let's start off with some info on the Award and this year’s nominees…
The Buckeye Children’s & Teen Book Award program is designed to:(1/4)
I'm currently President BCTBA Council, am teen librarian at public library Stow OH. Been on Council 10yrs orso
...encourage students in Ohio to read literature critically, (2/4)
… to promote teacher and librarian involvement in young adult literature programs, (3/4)
... and to commend authors of such literature. (4/4)
The books are both nominated AND voted on by Ohio's children and teens! Unique for a children's/teen choice award.
I find it to be a very empowering tool for Ss. I always liked to tie it with election season and teaching them to use their voice

as much as I love the Newbery, Caldecott, etc, were many times, I just felt they didn't demo what KIDS enjoy, but does

Voting is one of my favorite activities all year with elementary!
A1 I had easiest time in K-2. school-wide voting on election day & Ss left with "I Voted Today" stickers https://t.co/DJNtg7EYNC
A1 Could do a "Battle of Books" competition; challenge Ss to read all 5 and then do trivia contest(s) before voting
A2 When tied in w election, Ss make campaign posters for favs, etc.
Yes, it's a great tie-in with the US election, especially when it's a presidential election year!
That is exactly what my predecessor used to have Ss do! Maybe time for me to bring back that activity!

What a great way to really "get into" the story!
A1: At our voting celebration, we have a voting station plus an activity center for each book.
A1: Activities include games and crafts. We also make Buckeye necklaces with beads that spell "I <3 BOOKS."
A1: Prior to voting, we read one nominated book each week in library "specials" classes.
A1: I confess to having a harder time with older students. Longer books make finding time for read-alouds more challenging.

At my public library I make a display & have computer setup for students to vote right there.
Keep throwing out voting ideas! We'll add question 2 to the conversation...
We also have plenty of paper ballots on display and a plastic ballot box to collec them in. Library staff can enter those votes.

Yes, it's a closed system, our IT guy sets up so they can't go to any other sites.

Booktalks are my main resource; I read all the nominees asap so I can talk them up to any students I encounter.
A2: I do use Pinterest to find ideas for our voting celebration!
Do you ever record podcast or video book talks?
We're down to our last 10 minutes--keep those resources coming while we throw Question 3 in the mix!
A3: mentioned this earlier with the tie-in to national elections, natural link to social studies standards!
A3: When planning voting activities, I include math, science, SS in addition to reading.
I plan to start doing booktalks on video, using Snapchat. I have one on our YouTube channel from years ago, will send link.
