Hi! Kn teacher from Houston, here!
There you are! We were waiting for you.
Admin has even more paperwork and pressure from the top than Ts
Q1: Make sure you know and OWN your purpose. Why do teachers want to become administrators?
A1: To share ideas with others; for me, I realized that my strength is guiding teachers to guide students.
Retweet Q1. https://t.co/vGP9N4sbEh
Q1: Make sure you know and OWN your purpose. Why do teachers want to become administrators?
A1: have the potential to have a wider sphere of influence, can help more kids
How did you discover this strength? https://t.co/QqRaaqfhvU
A1: To share ideas with others; for me, I realized that my strength is guiding teachers to guide students.
A1: To help guide teachers tobecome better, change the system, and to get a good parking spot ;)
Very common reason. https://t.co/epuDtZuWJH
A1: have the potential to have a wider sphere of influence, can help more kids
A1: My daughter wants to be an admin to have a bigger effect on a school than a T does - she is undergrad ed major now
A1: I would hope they want to take their goals and love for students to another level.
A1 as I finish my admin certificate that is a question I'm curious about
IDK about the "good parking spot" piece... maybe if you're and get to school before 6am. https://t.co/PK4heh9p8t
A1: To help guide teachers tobecome better, change the system, and to get a good parking spot ;)
A1: I think it's natural progression in any position, you will eventually want to be apart of management
Wow. She's identified that career goal earlier than most. https://t.co/N11JrZzEve
A1: My daughter wants to be an admin to have a bigger effect on a school than a T does - she is undergrad ed major now
She is very self-motivated
A1: To help foster change and improve the teaching learning experience for Ss.
A1 to influence more than 22 students! Influence and help grow effective teachers into leaders, to faciliate change.
A1: I believe Ts feel as an admin, they can have a little more power to change certain things that they can't from the classroom
Why is that, though? What's the draw? https://t.co/5ip2QhZvzA
A1: I think it's natural progression in any position, you will eventually want to be apart of management
A1: Positive/negative, intrinsic/extrinsic factors can all cause a teacher to transition to admin. https://t.co/qRv9UApsVj
hahahahaha! I do have that! but that just makes it easier to get to at 9pm!! 😂😂😂
I knew I wnted to b an admin when as a district tech person, I missed having "a" campus...one where I cld focus on and love on! A1
A1: To build relationships to bring stakeholders together for a common goal.
A1: It has something to do with your gifts and talents. Some are cut out to lead.
A1 I agree with these answers, but don't see that in practice I see the role as dealing with testing & discipline
Does that typically come from good or not-so-good examples of leaders they've experienced? https://t.co/sEZ3YU7bny
A1: I believe Ts feel as an admin, they can have a little more power to change certain things that they can't from the classroom
Yes, not sure I would be a good leader for adults
And T evaluations. Seem to take lots of time.
Velia joining in, interesting chat
Hello, ! I just got home from the gym and kids' sports. I'm excited to join!
I enjoy being a teacher leader. I would miss the role of teacher in admin. The job itself does not appeal to me.
after many years of teaching, you're rich in experiences that can help guide fledgling teachers in their early years
Most activities I participate in I have found after I understand how to do it I would like to be a leader in that activity
After a long hiatus, joining back and excited for tonight's chat! Coming from Sioux City tonight!
A1: unfortunately I think many times it is to do things differently than what we saw more than to imitate
A1: to affect change in a beloved profession
I've heard this same quote from many quality teachers. https://t.co/PBfRkyShfn
I enjoy being a teacher leader. I would miss the role of teacher in admin. The job itself does not appeal to me.
A1 I am seeking admin to be a more effective advocate for Ts and Ss. There's a chance to make a huge diff. by coaching Ts.
A1: To continue the positive influence for Ss achievement and empowerment of tchrs!
Definitely some truth there. "I could do it better myself."
https://t.co/eZ3cGlUp8f
A1: unfortunately I think many times it is to do things differently than what we saw more than to imitate
We all serve a purpose. If you are most happiest in the classroom, that is wonderful. Let lead you.
At a few schools I have taught at the admin gets a nice spot
Q2: Your first step should be to begin buildng relationships. What can an aspiring admin do right off the bat?
A1:Hopefully to be a true supporter of Ts, Ss, & families. Dare to be a positive change agent.
What would your priorities be? https://t.co/uhstTFyRrC
A1 I am seeking admin to be a more effective advocate for Ts and Ss. There's a chance to make a huge diff. by coaching Ts.
A1: After watching, observing and helping I feel like I could be a good leader/coach.
Yes thankfully we are all called to different roles, wired to do those and have an inner drive to get there. https://t.co/bBudWvd0Dn
We all serve a purpose. If you are most happiest in the classroom, that is wonderful. Let lead you.
Retweet Q2. https://t.co/Ds0VH6K1Ke
Q2: Your first step should be to begin buildng relationships. What can an aspiring admin do right off the bat?
A2: Live and learn the first year; grow on what staff are doing right; and listen to their input!
A2: Just like the students, admins should take time to get to know the teachers (via interests and encouragement/partnerships).
What is 20% Time? It is a game-changer. Check out our new book, Cultivating Genius, on Amazon! https://t.co/gZXOypxRF7
If you feel it... you can do it! https://t.co/lmLQoX65RH
A1: After watching, observing and helping I feel like I could be a good leader/coach.
A2: Be a team player. Lead committees, PLCs, and other groups that help hone leadership skills.
Both of my last 2 Ps had get togethers w/ staff over the summer
Hi - Don - MS Principal - Long Island
Checked in a lil late; Jersey girl teaching 4th grade in NC.
A2 seek the role of a teacher leader, build relationships with colleagues at your school, hold PLCs or other Prof Dev.
Hi Carol ELA consultant from Long Island here at for a few questions before my eyes close.
Good point, Justin. https://t.co/uQVFWQNqWo
it is nice to be able to remove fear policies that keep teachers from being creative and allow them to be passionate
I really enjoy the role of a coach. The teacher benefit is seeing students, the admin benefit is seeing the school as a whole.
Thanks for joining from NY! https://t.co/YlDw3lUx24
Hi Carol ELA consultant from Long Island here at for a few questions before my eyes close.
BOLD print on "listen". https://t.co/XSG1GP2lQ8
A2: Live and learn the first year; grow on what staff are doing right; and listen to their input!
over time administration becomes less about T & S. More about keeping a position due to all the high stakes testing
A1 I wanted to become an administrator to impact teaching & learning on a districtwide level. A1
A2: Get to know Ts and their strengths. Learn what interests they have and what drives them. Connect with each daily. Listen!
A2 Say yes to leadership opps, read, develop relationships, & dress the part. Find an admin mentor & be willing to be coached
A2: I think an aspiring leader should work on being a listener, learn how to connect and build relationships. Look for mentors.
Learn their love language. It helps when it comes time to show appreciation. https://t.co/KOiDV4BBuJ
A2: Just like the students, admins should take time to get to know the teachers (via interests and encouragement/partnerships).
Q2 I think anyone who wants to build relationships with other adults has to do it with mutual respect and trust as the foundation.
It's probably a little of both, depending on the T. If it's all in the best interest of Ss, I'm all for it
affecting positive change is a journey of mindful practice. A1
A2: It can't be stressed enough. Relationships are crucial. LISTEN more than you TALK. UNDERSTAND b4 you try to ANSWER.
A2: getting to know staff's strengths and weaknesses
A2: be committed 2 excellence, be competent and have character (trustworthy) and care about people for who they are not what they do
Do you have administrative aspirations? Some day???
To inspire, motivate and create a culture of caring for the is and
Do you see that even at the building level? https://t.co/35a0oZcLO9
over time administration becomes less about T & S. More about keeping a position due to all the high stakes testing
A2: step out of your comfort zone; collaborate across grade levels; forge new relationships
. Great Ts like you make great admin. You are still teaching, just differently!
RT To inspire, motivate and create a culture of caring for the is and
Aspiring Administrators should be listen and learn. A2
A2 Listen and NEVER play favorites. When admins play favorites, they lose all credibility.
So true. Listen to what is said and what isn't being said.
A2 Yes - get out there and see what's going on -- live in classrooms with students and teachers
Some day, perhaps. Not this day. :)
Team players show that there is no I in the word team. Builds trust that way. A2
Do you do a lot of planned walk throughs or are they spontaneous?
Thanks Connie, happy to join in
Q2: Your first step should be to begin buildng relationships. What can an aspiring admin do right off bat? https://t.co/vAuVozERrU
My admin does lots of walkthroughs - hated it at first but now see the benefits
The great leading . Ok. I'm in! Matt an elementary principal from TX.
at least 40-60 min per day - try to vary times and classooms
Coaching is an imp. role when lead with wisdom and respect for the educator's craft.
trust that they willing make the best decisions for our students too!
So true! Consistency. I strive to be predictable. Always know where I'm going to stand on an issue. https://t.co/x5sstQMaJZ
A2 Listen and NEVER play favorites. When admins play favorites, they lose all credibility.
Spending time in classrooms - open door policy
One day the path in front of you will lead you. Good luck!
leaders need to be learners alongside kids and adults
Good to keep your options open. Never know when the right opportunity will fall in your lap.
Q3: Having a mentor is crucial. Who can walk this path with new admins?
A2: Showing Ts they are appreciated and even though you've transitioned, you're there to listen still
I am a proponent of literacy learning walks to get a flavor of what goes on in the classrooms.
unfortunately this does happen but, admins need to take a stand for what's right. https://t.co/8JUk6DHGs2
Do you see that even at the building level? https://t.co/35a0oZcLO9
over time administration becomes less about T & S. More about keeping a position due to all the high stakes testing
Absolutely! Everything must be based on what is best for our Ss--it's our driving force when leading!
Hi everyone! I'm jumping in late. Jerrica, 3rd grade teacher, FL
A3: Experienced teachers and other leaders on campus (sometimes former principals). Mentorship is a team effort.
A3 It is your mentor that sees the potential, helps you reflect and believe in your abilities.
Other administrators who are more guides than critics. A3
A3: I'm in a program where we arrange for a mentor and collaborate with other principals in a var. of district sizes. Expands POV
A3: I can think of several practicing admins who would make great mentors. https://t.co/7cGvcIYV1Z
Q3: Having a mentor is crucial. Who can walk this path with new admins?
A2 I think admins should get to know faculty on a personal level as well as professional level. To an extent, or course.
A3: senior teachers and other admin
Glad you did, great convo for you. https://t.co/XG13mn4W8O
Hi everyone! I'm jumping in late. Jerrica, 3rd grade teacher, FL
Sometimes your mentor is your mentor before you're actually an admin.
A3 other principals and leaders in the district
That's awesome! Do you always provide feedback to your tchrs or is it informal?
Yes thank you for tagging me!
How is that working? https://t.co/glwm2oOIzP
A3: I'm in a program where we arrange for a mentor and collaborate with other principals in a var. of district sizes. Expands POV
A3 all new admins started somewhere. Keep in touch w/ prior principals & leverage power of PLN. There are 1-2 principals on Twitter
A3 I've had amazing mentors --- use your connected PLN's to find mentors...
Feel free to call them out. Bet they'd love to hear you think highly of them. https://t.co/9dy8MIiFF1
A3: I can think of several practicing admins who would make great mentors. https://t.co/7cGvcIYV1Z
Q3: Having a mentor is crucial. Who can walk this path with new admins?
A3: this is where a good central office comes in. A principalship is a lonely position at time. Blessed I have had great bosses
I agree! I have moved districts and Jaynee Ricke will always be my "go to" person 4 advice!
not in my building but I have heard other teachers complain about it.
A3 Admins who are willing to give experiences and expose new leaders to differing points of view
A3: Any effective leader could be a mentor. You may need more than one!
A3: Can learn from both strong & ineffective leaders. It occurs throughout your career. Know what you respected and what to change.
Ahh, that is where I was coming from. Its the Master Teacher that sees the potential and leadership in you
I know of a few Ts on my campus with a Masters in Ed Leadership but do not see them taking on leadership roles. that's sad
Before my eyes go 4 final shutdown, let me invite participants 2 a deliciously creative chat 4.11.16 8pmEST. https://t.co/ftgAotGKp0
When your leader asks, "Have you ever thought of administration?" That's a sign s/he sees the leader in you.
not always cause sometimes I just sit in with the kid and learn so ... use Voxer for informal feedback also
A2:Set clear, firm, and professional boundaries while being fair & approachable. Respect all no cliques...
Perhaps, they need to be coaxed into an instructional leader role.
That's awesome! I have heard about using Voxer to give feedback. Suggestions on how to begin using it?
It takes more than a degree to be a solid leader. https://t.co/nJvzMt7Z8K
I know of a few Ts on my campus with a Masters in Ed Leadership but do not see them taking on leadership roles. that's sad
A3: Social Media/Twitter can provide a PLN for Admins. to motivate and encourage and push to be better.
This is true but it leads me to question why Ts get the degree in the 1st place.
I record a "note" then e-mail to the teacher
I'm loving it! It offers great discussion and "real life" situations to consider before taking on an admin role!
I truly feel teachers have a "calling" to teach. Do you think admins have that same kind of calling?
think so -- leadership is a calling...
I think some do...just in case. https://t.co/teSAnYakSj
This is true but it leads me to question why Ts get the degree in the 1st place.
This is a great thought.
https://t.co/7TSlskhXjQ
I truly feel teachers have a "calling" to teach. Do you think admins have that same kind of calling?
yes. I think it takes a special person to be able to do the job of an admin. It's a hard job
Yes-look, listen, and learn. Everyone brings so much to the table. https://t.co/tKh9VlsBJ9
A2: It can't be stressed enough. Relationships are crucial. LISTEN more than you TALK. UNDERSTAND b4 you try to ANSWER.
Maybe before they see the leader in themselves. https://t.co/EzvoZSuCg3
When your leader asks, "Have you ever thought of administration?" That's a sign s/he sees the leader in you.
A4 Challenging to get your first job --- bias against inexperience
The good ones do. https://t.co/gZHKp6u5lB
I truly feel teachers have a "calling" to teach. Do you think admins have that same kind of calling?
I agree....but I also think it takes specific "gifts" and "talents" and desire. https://t.co/A8JpNk7xOy
yes. I think it takes a special person to be able to do the job of an admin. It's a hard job
A3: People like they've been my life savers!
A3: People you respect, within your district & out. Having a PLN as an admin is a MUST. I am SOOOOO thankful for mine that help me!
Q4: What are the biggest obstacles in transitioning from classroom to admin?
higher pay, looks easy😂, the belief they can be a better leader, lots of reasons. Some good & some bad
A3 Mentors are SO important to ALL educators: Teachers, Coaches, Admins alike. We all need a trusted voice to help guide us.
. absolutely. There are great teachers that become great admins, but they are always great ldrs!
A4: Learning the ropes as the new teachers; laws and ways to solve conflict between faculty/staff members (and students)
A4: Looking at the big picture; what's best for our students, our building, & our district. We have to expand our role in leading
A4: Lack of confidence, degree, money, etc.
A4: I would think it is hard to come in where someone else has led. Or to move up where you have been a peer.
Maybe a little "grass is always greener" for some? https://t.co/O5f62iTZaZ
higher pay, looks easy😂, the belief they can be a better leader, lots of reasons. Some good & some bad
A4 For me personally, it would be missing the classroom. Other obstacles; testing, teachers who are not passionate
A4: Experienced Ts make more than some new admins. Most districts looking for experienced Admins. Promote within. Hire friends.
I don't think some us can be aware of a calling since the job of admin can't always be known from the outside, it's a leap of faith.
A4. Maybe not enough support from their higher ups?
A4: One aha often occurs is not all teachers have same work habits, perceptions, &attitude toward teaching. https://t.co/XIcvTuSCrS
A4: Some hire retired admins.
A4: when all happens too fast. When the admin is too young. Not enough leadership experience.
A4. Hesitancy in ability. Reluctance to leave the classroom behind.
Our prior P decided to go back to twaching after 2 years - things were interesting at our school for a while
true sometimes it comes at you so fast!!
A4 If it's in the same building, the relationships you have made will likely change in some way.
I agree, the good ones have a true calling. They also never forget what it's like to walk in Ts shoes. https://t.co/TCcDa1kXHI
The good ones do. https://t.co/gZHKp6u5lB
I truly feel teachers have a "calling" to teach. Do you think admins have that same kind of calling?
A4: observing math lesson bc I wanted to jump in - get the students involved - Had to focus on meaningful feedback for my staff
A4: Eeekk...the responsibility shift. You go from 22 to 500 to make decisions for... Coaching and "helping" adults is also harder!!
A4:
Transitioning requires a view of the "big picture" which is hard to see when leading a classroom and/or grade lvl
A4:learning that you can't make everyone happy, you can change your mind w/o being inconsistent, bad Ts take more time than great 1s
Voice of experience... https://t.co/Fs7H4kQXFj
A4 If it's in the same building, the relationships you have made will likely change in some way.
may be greatest diff between teaching and admin --- -- pace of decision making
I was wondering if that happened and what the outcomes would be
Using tweetdeck - have not tried
I would love to ask my ap "is this what you thought it would be?"
A4- Not becoming disconnected to the everyday struggles that Ts have. You have to consider things from multiple perspectives.
Interesting that so many quality teachers think their fellow teachers are just like them. Move out of classroom and see differently.
OMGosh... do it! S/He will not be offended! Bet the answer is HECK-NO! https://t.co/x0xQMoKp59
I would love to ask my ap "is this what you thought it would be?"
I have heard that. You see things from a totally different perspective. https://t.co/kvSLuqlYMv
Interesting that so many quality teachers think their fellow teachers are just like them. Move out of classroom and see differently.
graduate in April w admin degree in Dallas. What advice to get job when only worked there & they are sending 150 ppl back to clrm
A4:Probably stepping aside & letting Ts do what Ts do best w/o micro-managing. Allow individualities to exist.
Give it a pilot tonight. It's pretty cool.
yes -- networking helps --- ppl won't see as inexperienced.
A4 made some very valid points. I bet managing a campus full of differing ideas and personalities is hard.
Some unhappy Ts - some who left and unhappy Ps. i personally liked her
Q5: Making mistakes is natural. How should new admins handle their first missteps?
I've had that conversation with an AP at my school. They told me it was and more.
It took me years to decide to become a T, becoming admin is taking me longer to decide. heavy the head that
A5: Own up to your mistakes and LEARN from them; know when to ask for forgiveness--failure=learning!
A5: Admit the mistake. Learn from the mistake.
I can see the difference now.
A5: don't make them a second time!
Can I follow 2 chats at once. I am in right now as well
A5: I think if they want to build trust, own up to it. Fix it and move on.
A5: Journaling would allow the admins to reflect and learn from the mistakes. Take it as a step forward, not a step backward.
A5 Own mistakes and learn from them. Mistakes is just another step to learning!
A5 Be a quick learner, forgive, admit mistakes and move on.
A5: Admit the mistake. Fix it. Apologize.
Defntly she sees potential! Congrats, use yr gift and inspire others. Your success will help many
A5: great time to use it as a teachable moment about risk taking and failure are acceptable. Be accountable and learn from it
Use your PLN as a network and spread your wings. https://t.co/7pt12La9Wn
graduate in April w admin degree in Dallas. What advice to get job when only worked there & they are sending 150 ppl back to clrm
Do you feel admin have the same freedom to try/fail... try again?
There are not enough opportunities for teachers to see and learn from peers.
A5: with honesty, and no passing blame. Own it, explain it,move on!
Take the responsibility and be honest with stkhldrs, communicate plan of action to correct. I see far too many brush under the rug
A5 Know that you will make mistakes, and that it is ok. Don't judge yourself. Just learn from it. You made mistakes as a T too.
It happens on a larger scale. More visible.
A5 Yes... so IMP to own your mistakes
What are some ways we can expand opportunities for Ts to see and learn from each other? https://t.co/niA3eETnrZ
There are not enough opportunities for teachers to see and learn from peers.
I see some Ts leave early, talk trash about admin & Ts, typical negative, lack interest in team building.
With grace and new directions Good night All! Thanks
A5 Admit mistake, learn from it, bounce ideas around its staff but what could be done differently next time
Not always as quick to accept, understand, or excuse.
a4 getting rid of assumptions that everyone teaches like me, works like me-everyone has different backgrounds/diff mindset
I try to be positive and helpful and a team player no matter how things are at my campus.
So long as you don't make too many too often. https://t.co/MzIax9dACA
If you're humble and transparent then others will forgive you your msitakes and be eager to help
I think peer coaching is a fabulous idea.
Yes. I have had that exp. - not fun https://t.co/T3elhsjeML
a4 getting rid of assumptions that everyone teaches like me, works like me-everyone has different backgrounds/diff mindset
No, those teachers are not. I felt that they burnt out long ago.
A5: handle those missteps with honesty and transparency...same way you will handle it when u make mistakes as an exp admin
A5 Learning at its fullest, be authentic, transparent and Learn together, collaborate
no it's hard to change your mind because it is viewed as being inconsistent and changing with the wind
Interesting. that's not my perspective. I feel my leash is shorter. Under microscope all the time "She should know.."
A5: Own & EXPECT mistakes. Write dwn reflectively wht wnt wrong & LEARN frm it. Mistakes r inevitable, learning frm them is up to u!
A5:With honesty, humility, & accountability understand mistakes will come but do not dwell on them.
Q6: Always be open to learning! What are go-to resources to continue growth in administration?
Retweet Q6.
https://t.co/sEATTKzWjL
Q6: Always be open to learning! What are go-to resources to continue growth in administration?
A6: Can I say Twitter? :-)
A6: PLN is a must, collaborate with mentors, & continue professional reading (2 hrs/wk)
True but better to admit & apologize instead of ignoring and hoping it goes away. They will respect that you own it.
RT A5 Learning at its fullest, be authentic, transparent and Learn together, collaborate
a5...YES! OWN IT!! I can't stand it when people justify their mistakes. Just own up to it and move on
You create the conditions of trust that allow you to try and fail...
A6: I am thinking your PLN would be a great resource. A disconnnected connection.
A6: PLN, twitter, online resources
A6: Professional Learning Communities; Colleagues; Mentors; Collaboratory Online Platforms like
Awesome! Stealing that idea!
RT You create the conditions of trust that allow you to try and fail...
Takes a LOT of explaining when you know better and now want to do better. "But you said...." https://t.co/ptpqXhZOW9
no it's hard to change your mind because it is viewed as being inconsistent and changing with the wind
Also, we all have those we look up to. we love how they do it...allow them to mentor you.
A6: reflect right after a major event so it is fresh. Surround yourself with great people. Search for the best trainers
A6 I continue my learning through , reading blogs, attending conferences, presenting and my peeps!
A6: Association, Mentor Admin, Conference, Visit other buildings!!, Superintendency, Colleagues
RT A6: Association, Mentor Admin, Conference, Visit other buildings!!, Superintendency, Colleagues
I agree. That works great for Ts too.
Thanks for letting me jump in tonight! Thanks for leading the way &
A6 Yes -- Twitter ultimate go-to resource...
A6: Twitter, mentors, consortiums. Reach out to those you respect.
A6: I'm a BIG fan so I utilize so many of their resources....my PLN, in TX, and of course, TWITTER! is gr8!
When I get a professional compliment. I point out the disproportion of positive comments to neg. THANKS for making my week/month!
A6 well I'm not admin yet, but I'm assuming PDs, PLC's, Social Media, oh my!!
You still planning to miss this year? :(
https://t.co/L8a7uCSMnW
A6: I'm a BIG fan so I utilize so many of their resources....my PLN, in TX, and of course, TWITTER! is gr8!
What role do you have in admin?
at the end of the day its the same process just a different role. Not better, more important just different.
Current: Curriculum Director
Previous: MS Asst. Principal, MS Principal, Elem Principal
A6 Other administrators who have the experience and can guide you in the right direction.
Q7: One year from now, how will a new admin define his/her sucess?
Got 1st admin job in 2000-2001. Never sent kids to office as teacher, so thought being AP would be a piece of cake. HA!
A7: Success...did we support and help Ss learn and achieve to their fullest potential. It's all about our Ss!
Lots of PLN love @ How is it cultivated within your school communities?
A7: Visible growth of the school, Ts, Ss, and community involvement!
Wow! If I were to ever go into leadership, you are certainly someone I would want as a mentor. https://t.co/DIxhyIGKu8
Current: Curriculum Director
Previous: MS Asst. Principal, MS Principal, Elem Principal
A7: data and school climate
A7: Growth ("I learned that it is efficient to do X, Y, Z and not A, B, C.")
Our APs have so much resp in elem, IEPs, testing, discipline, and always paperwork
Q7. School/ stakeholder morale
