Hi, Gretchen from KY joining in. STEM. #peekachat
  • Peekapak - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:04 PM EDT
The Summer Slide refers to learning loss that happens over the summer due to students not using the skills they learn about in school in areas such as literacy and math. #PeekaChat
  • ProfaTeal Jun 12 @ 9:04 PM EDT
Becky from Portage, MI and I teach k-8 Spanish #PeekaChat #ALPLEARN

  • amishahdotca - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:05 PM EDT
Welcome Gretchen! Happy you can join us for #peekachat
    In reply to @gdorn1
  • Peekapak - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A1: Most Ss lose two to three months of literacy skills, as well as two months worth of math skills. #PeekaChat
  • amishahdotca - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A1: The Summer Slide leads to most teachers having to re-teach the previous year's material for the first month of the next school year, wasting time and resources that are already quite limited. #PeekaChat
  • amishahdotca - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:06 PM EDT
    Welcome Becky to #Peekachat!

Hello! Carol from Illinois 5th Grade Dual Language teacher #PeekaChat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:07 PM EDT
A1 - Students can lose academic skills, get into bad habits, need to re-learn how to be a focused students after a long summer break. #peekachat
  • gdorn1 Jun 12 @ 9:07 PM EDT
A1. Our Ss regressing in math and reading levels because they are not practicing everyday! #peekachat
  • EdTechAmber Jun 12 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1- Creating a frustrating few months for those that didn't "slide" by having to review all the previously learned material during the first part of the new year. 1st weeks are for building community and this is a way to lose your Ss that are on point and ready to roll #peekachat
  • Hahne_Elyse Jun 12 @ 9:08 PM EDT
Hi y’all. Elyse from Texas. I’m an Elementary Special Ed Teacher and will be focusing on behavior in a unit next year. I can’t wait. #Peekachat
  • ProfaTeal Jun 12 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1: Spending a lot of time re-teaching in the fall - If you don't use it, you lose it! #PeekaChat #ALPLEARN

  • Peekapak - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:10 PM EDT
Q2: What are some of your best strategies for avoiding the Summer Slide? #PeekaChat
  • Dale_Chu Jun 12 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A1: It magnifies the gap between students from affluent and low-income communities. #peekachat
    In reply to @Peekapak
  • Hahne_Elyse Jun 12 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A1 Summer slide has the ability to allow students to lose what they’ve learned, forget how to solve problems, and create headaches when academics are reintroduced when school starts again. #Peekachat
  • Peekapak - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A2: Strategies to avoid the Summer Slide could be giving Ss a reading list for the summer, or even something less academic like getting children to help cook and follow recipes. #PeekaChat
  • amishahdotca - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A2: Reinforcing SEL skills such as perseverance will encourage Ss to stay engaged during the "off months", and determined to keep up their academic and behavioral skills. #PeekaChat
  • Hahne_Elyse Jun 12 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A2 I’ve had my students read whatever they are doing over the summer. Labels, game instructions, and help around their house to stay with it so to speak. #Peekachat
  • ProfaTeal Jun 12 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A2: My (Spanish language) students have access to online resources like Duolingo and Señor Wooly over the summer, which helps them continue their learning in a fun way @senorwooly #PeekaChat #ALPLEARN
  • tweets_mrs Jun 12 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A:2–keeping ClassDojo alive! I have met my students twice at the public library to use Khan Academy for math and picking out great reads for the week! Earning prizes at the library and doing summer reading! Double dipping! #PeekaChat
  • gdorn1 Jun 12 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A2. Our district provides each Ss with a book to read over summer and enrolls them in the library reading contest where they can take AR quizzes! For math, suggesting games to play, STEM activities using math with P and child or just child, various things to practice. #peekachat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A2 - I encourage lots of reading (but most of my kiddos already have the reading bug), & I gave them access to a program called Summer Slugger by @EVERFI that was free & focuses on preventing the summer slide! #peekachat
  • amishahdotca - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:15 PM EDT
    Love this! #peekachat
    In reply to @tweets_mrs
  • EdTechAmber Jun 12 @ 9:16 PM EDT
A2- If you are a @Seesaw teacher, it would be cool to keep your accounts up and running to journal with your students. Keep in touch about what they are reading, doing, etc. Set up a virtual Bingo board that they could play along with for various activities they do. #peekachat
  • JeremyDBond Jun 12 @ 9:16 PM EDT
Parent peeking into #PeekaChat. Our last #EdParentCamp was focused on summer slide! I could use some advice on avoiding math slide over the summer.
  • Peekapak - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:17 PM EDT
Q3: What are some of your favorite resources that prevent the Summer Slide? #PeekaChat
  • Peekapak - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A3: There are many great resources for Ss of any age that are available year-round. Our Peekapak stories and lessons can be used at home by parents to keep their children's SEL and literacy learning engaged while they are away from school! #PeekaChat
  • crikeypotter Jun 12 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A2: avoid summer slide by joining summer reading programs at the public library or going to/teaching summer school (like I am, which makes me skip ISTE☹️) #PeekaChat
  • amishahdotca - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:18 PM EDT
Have you tried out @ProdigyGame for helping your child practice math? I always hear good things from students about it #Peekachat
    In reply to @JeremyDBond, @ProdigyGame
  • amishahdotca - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A3: Making use of the different reading levels offered by our Peekapak stories is a great way for Ss to maintain the past year's literacy skills, while also offering an opportunity to get a jump start on next year's curriculum. #PeekaChat
  • BritGlad Jun 12 @ 9:19 PM EDT
Q3: Utilizing the summer programs throughout the community and promoting them often on our schools facebook pages. #peekachat
  • EdTechAmber Jun 12 @ 9:19 PM EDT
Real world math is the best!!Money to purchase something (create a budget to buy something at the end of the summer for chores completed?!), elapsed time with events going on throughout the day, track the weather, Using a recipe to cook and "doubling" the measurements. #peekachat
    In reply to @JeremyDBond
  • tweets_mrs Jun 12 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A:4 ClassDojo, Khan Academy, Googleclassroom, and checking in with my Ss and their families to keep learning alive! #PeekaChat
  • Hahne_Elyse Jun 12 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A3 My students took a huge liking to Prodigy math online and it’s game based. Our district also has online platform that students can log into to utilize. My students love books and eat up being given a few to take too. #Peekachat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A3 - The best resource is access to a library or lots of books at home! It's nice when parents are able to do lots of enriching activities with their kiddos (field trips, cultural experiences, etc.). Basic math fact practice... #peekachat
  • ProfaTeal Jun 12 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A3: My favorite resource over the summer is Señor Wooly. My students use it throughout the year so they are familiar with it, but over the summer I open up a few new songs/stories for them to explore on their own. #PeekaChat #ALPLEARN
  • gdorn1 Jun 12 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A3. I refer my P to different topics covered in STEM on my Pinterest page for more information or a particular website. Different projects depending on their likes. For reading pub. lib. has num, mat., internet. #peekachat
  • Peekapak - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Q4: What are some of the benefits of staying engaged during the summer and avoiding the Summer Slide? #PeekaChat
  • EdTechAmber Jun 12 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Another idea is to tie in computer science with coding. I know that several places offer summer camps locally here. (I think perhaps even places like @Apple store and @MicrosoftStore??) There are so many great math tie-ins with coding!! @codeorg is another resource #PeekaChat
    In reply to @JeremyDBond, @Apple, @MicrosoftStore, @codeorg
  • Peekapak - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A4: Staying engaged during the summer will help Ss perform better in the next school year, and it will lead to a better learning experience over the course of their entire academic career. #PeekaChat
  • EdTechAmber Jun 12 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A4- When Ss avoid the slide, it allows for teachers to focus more attention on building community, as it should be, during the first weeks back. Allowing Ss to assimilate to a new grade and new class instead of playing a giant game of "What don't you remember?" #peekachat
  • amishahdotca - Moderator Jun 12 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A4: SEL skills go well beyond the scope of the classroom. Continued practice and discussion will ensure Ss best develop these skills that will remain valuable for their entire lives. #PeekaChat
  • Hahne_Elyse Jun 12 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A4 Staying engaged throughout the summer gives students the advantage of staying focused, not having to relearn how to act as much, and adjust easier than those who do nothing academic based over the summer. #Peekachat
  • BritGlad Jun 12 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A4: Engagement= cure for being a zombie tech consumer... We provide parents with ideas for summer hands on learning... and share these multiple times during the break. #PeekaChat
  • tweets_mrs Jun 12 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A:4 not having a 12 week vacation from learning! I want them to learn and read topics that they love... create that I wonder list and explore! Wonderopolis gets them wondering!! #PeekaChat
  • BritGlad Jun 12 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A4: Many teachers also have summer park meet ups with their classes, they meet to chat about books, do a craft or just spend time at the park. #PeekaChat
  • gdorn1 Jun 12 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A4. Our Ss are basically where they left off and ready to go in learning with a short review period. It allows Ss to lead and take part in discussion of activities! #peekachat #peekachat
