#DITCHbook was created by Ditch That Textbook author Matt Miller. The chat focuses on innovative teaching ideas and disrupting standard textbook education.
Hey #ditchbook ! Kimberly, Reading specialist from north TX, here to chat about 'Ditch Consumption, Get Creating'. Hey Louie, does that mean we can't consume food? Hehe!
Louie from Lancaster, PA. Moderating #DitchBook tonight! Last day of school today. Mixed emotions because I'm going to Philly to teach 5th grade next year!
Hi everyone! My name is Bethany and I am a preservice teacher currently studying early childhood education at the University of Minnesota -- Twin Cities! #DitchBook
Couldn’t miss it! :) #ditchbook.
Hey, @jmattmiller, I gave you a shoutout on @CADPODCAST1 the other day. THEN they told me you were their next guest! haha.

Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A1: Start with WHY! I do make it a point to start with Why w/my Ss, & Ts is that starting with purpose helps build participation. Creation follows consumption to help Ss process, reflect, or show what they know. Creation can then be used as formative assessment. #DitchBook
A1: Yes, I believe both creation and consuming are important in the classroom! Why? Creation - to give S's opportunities to apply what they know in an authentic way while learning skills they can use later. Why consume - to learn new content or get ideas! #ditchbook
A1. I've used #hyperdocs a ton this year. I think I've found an appropriate level of consumption/creation in these lessons. The direct instruction/consumption in "Explore" section prepares students to make the dive into the creation portion of the #hyperdoc. #ditchbook
A1: Creating and consuming are what interacting as a human being is all about; it’s like being a part of a potluck. You make something and share it for others to enjoy, then sample others’ unique dishes, too. Ss need to learn how to set the table for a meaningful meal. #DitchBook
Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A1: Consumption is often needed for background (whatever form of consumption that may take)... creation is a way to see their thinking along the way or at the end #ditchbook
A1: I think that in order to create you need to consume. The power of creation comes from students asking the right questions that allow them to discover their own "consumption", so they can create to demonstrate their learning. #ditchbook
A1 yes-room for both as long as consumption and creation are not mutually exclusive. Students, should be demonstrating their understandings through creating products but learning from, experts is important too #DitchBook
Q1.
1. To promote student critical thinking. IF a student can create something to model the content- THEY HAVE IT! :)
2. Every single day.
3. Every single day.
Haha.
#ditchbook
Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A1: Why consume?
Learners create their construct of the world in their mind by creating.
Consuming and creating certainly can co-exist as long as there's balance! #DitchBOOK
A2: My why for everything was my student. I always pushed to do better for them. Students are creating and consuming always. Often together as we learned while trying to create their "product." There was always room for both if we had purpose for our "why" #DitchBook
A1. Love @simonsinek Why is so important! I think Ss can be the creators of consumption too and it depends on the pedagogical choices happening. #ditchbook
A1: My why is Reading Saves Lives so I share books that make a difference or have characters who do the same. That way Ss see themselves and their possibilities in literacy. I see value in both the input and the modeling and the creation piece they output. #DitchBook
Dustin Rimmey, AP US and Comparative Government Teacher and Speech and Debate Coach from Topeka, KS....but currently in the skies headed to Portland #DitchBook
Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A1a: creation is one of the best showcases of learning. When Ss designs their own project to demonstrate learning, it is more powerful than just completing the Ts assignment. Consumption is a necessary aspect of creation. It should lead to innovative ideas #DitchBook
Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A1: The why...creation to show what they know or what they’ve learned, consumption so I can expand on what they know. I want my balance to lean more on creation with “bouts” of consumption #DitchBook
Q1- Always room for both! I firmly believe people need to consume at some points in order to create. Creation is the augmentation of those things we have previously consumed in some manner. #ditchbook
Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A1: I wanted my Ss to be in the drivers' seats of their learning. I wanted to them to have voice & choice in creating/consuming. When they create, they are consuming-just in a way that digs deeper & makes stronger connections because of the creating. #ditchbook
I'm collaborating with a teacher this upcoming year to use hyperdocs in a 3rd grade classroom. We're really excited about the potential it has for personal learning! #DitchBook
A1: Stats show Ss spend a vast majority online time consuming, not creating. Ss should learn how they best consume (absorb) content, but they NEED practice expressing their own ideas and thoughts via creation, esp in a world that increasingly values creativity . . . #DitchBook
Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A1 Part 2: students are consuming when they read, see, hear, use existing ideas. Students are creating when they apply it to something new or in a different way. #ditchbook
A1: I think the why for both is to demonstrate understanding. The creation side just tends to be more challenging for students. Ideally, they have an opportunity to do both everyday. #ditchbook
A1. Creation and consumption are codependent and there should be room for both within a classroom. Without consumption, there would be no need for creation. Without creation, there would be nothing to consume. #DitchBook
Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A1b: I like to think that the past quarter, my Ss in English were creating more often than consuming. We spent time reading together, but they had several days to create different projects or assignments do demonstrate learning. Hardly anything looked the same! #DitchBook
Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A1: The "real world" is one of consumption and creation, there needs to be a happy medium of both. Ss sometimes need to consume in order to create, sometimes creation leads to consumption, there has to be both IMO #ditchbook
Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A1
1 creation is the epitome of applying learning. Consumption helps build that knowledge and plant ideas to create.
2 consuming information related to standards and using it to create presentations
3 certainly! I think of DOK and SAMR, you don’t live in one spot. #DitchBook
Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A1: I create the 'what' then I search for a 'why' so that I can do it. Ss love to create. They love to be taught how to create. We hope they grow wings & live a more full life. #ditchbook
A1: Why? Because we want to. Students consume knowledge and create their own resources and materials that they share with their peers. Because they want to. #DitchBook
Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A2: Students in my science 8 classroom are creating videos, posters, skits, storybooks, graphs of data, infographics, models, interactives, lego creations, and whatever they ! #ditchbook
A1c: Definitey a place for both. Just listened to @jmattmiller s podcast this am about not just consuming. We need to learn from others, but we need to take that knowledge and do something! #Ditchbook
Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A1: The why is to show that the knowledge is flowing both ways. They cannot create unless they consume, right? Students are ALWAYS doing both. Hopefully there is more creating! #ditchbook
Students get an ENORMOUS advantage when they create.
In a world full of consumers, the ones who can create -- and do it well -- will inherit the future. #DitchBook
A2. My students are now creating a product for their summative assessments to show their learning. Anything from Google Sites to Infographics to Documentaries. This can either be in groups or individually. #DitchBook
A1
1. Debate: students consume topic and strategic knowledge to create their own out-of-the-box arguments.
2. Debate: They do both constantly. Government: lax at creating, but the AP Redesign will force wonders.
3. Absolutely, but striking a balance is crucial
#DitchBook
A2: Mostly students create works involving writing (ELA teacher), but I also like to include other projects that challenge expression: visual poetry, graffiti, 3D models, infographics, soundtracks, or whatever else students can dream up with opportunity. #DitchBook
Just like anything, consumption may have gotten out of balance and became the go to or only thing teachers did... I think I may have heard a podcast about striking a balance in things today #ditchpod#ditchbook
#DitchBook a3: My favorite this year was an -ism infographic. The kids studied lit by period and made one for their lifetimes. I got social-ism, fearism, etc. All bkd by history and texts of the time period.
A1: . . Ss are consuming to learn, to explore passions, but mostly to entertain/communicate. They are creating to express themselves on social media. There is room for both but where is the balance? Depends on each Ss needs and goals. #DitchBook
Q1. Three Parts... Brace Yourselves!
1.) What is the WHY behind both Creation and Consumption in your classroom?
2. When are students consuming and/or creating?
3. Is there a room for both?
#DitchBook
A2: My kid have been making story problems on Flipgrid for their classmates to solve. I have some ideas for how to make it even better next year. #Ditchbook
A2. Ss are making Rube Goldberg machines. They learned about forces and Newton's laws of motion. Did a #hyperdoc on Rube. Then working in a group came up with a task. Currently they want to video their work so they can improve it! #ditchbook
I think we sometimes throw the baby out with the bathwater when we say let's be "creators and not consumers of information." Consumption is almost a "bad word" sometimes. Love all the great points you all are bringing up to validate consumption WITH BALANCE! #ditchbook
A1: Why consume?
Learners create their construct of the world in their mind by creating.
Consuming and creating certainly can co-exist as long as there's balance! #DitchBOOK
#DitchBook A2.1: Creating things that represent thinking...responses to literature, articles, video...creating research papers and arguments...creating visuals to go with speeches...
A2: Ss are creating vids, slide decks, posters, timelines, websites, blog posts, maps. I liked a class Google MyMaps proj on the Am. Rev. Ss studied a battle/key figure, added pin on map with multimedia. #DitchBook
I agree. Both are necessary for an authentic give and take of information. We learn best when doing (creating), but need fuel to do so (consuming). #ditchbook#READ5305
A1: When I taught social studies, I was a big fan of #PBL to have students create various products that demonstrated their learning. Their creations were writing, digital, role playing, and so much more! #ditchbook
A2: I enjoy when my students do the “caption this” activity in google drawings via @jmattmiller. Always brings up some interesting responses. #DitchBooK
A2: this past quarter, we used a variety of visual representations of scenes, from stop motion to comic strips, reenactments, memes, emojis, etc. Visuals let me see what my Ss find most important. #Ditchbook
A2 my students typically have a range of production options. One of my favorites was a trading card project. Also have made mini-pods, board games, and landmarks
#DitchBookhttps://t.co/4DJ2yCdQP4
A2: this year I had students create a welcome to @RollaMiddle video that we use for new students and families. Although I'm not in the classroom, I still love working with the kids on projects like this. #DitchBook
A2- I give my Ss time each day to explore with a variety of materials everyday. They have access to @Seesaw to share their creations and even digitally manipulate them how they want. It is by far their favorite part of the day! #ditchbook
A2: I had some Ss create podcasts via @Screencastify based on their interests and learning. It was a struggle at first, but fun and interactive. #DitchBook
A3:
Students create blogs on current social issues, videos and/or podcast offering tutorials on speech and debate concepts, in AP gov students have turned to creating their own drawing-board to in-the-box board game for conceptual analysis.
#Ditchbook
A2 My 3-5 Literacy Ss use #Seesaw to share their learning. They have choice in creating a video, text, drawing, picture w/ audio, app-smashing, the choices are almost endless! #ditchbook
Google Slides and Drawings are MADE for creation. The best uses are the ones that they aren't made for.
Slides is WAY more than a tool for doing oral presentations. #DitchBook
A3: Any and all.
Growth, grades, etc. But don’t just get caught up in the numbers.. Tell the teachers what makes the student unique, how can they be better assisted, how do they learn best? #ditchbook
A4: Read!!!! I would recommend Teach Like a Pirate by @burgessdave Ditch that Textbook/Homework by @jmattmiller@alicekeeler Shift this by @JoyKirr Go into other classrooms and observe teachers that are doing creative things. Be brave and try something new! #ditchbook
Every time I need to make a "flyer" or something, it's Slides & Drawings, and my Twitter avatar is a creation from Drawings and Bitmoji... so many possibilities! #ditchbook
We start our day in 1st using morning tubs. I give them manipulatives to play and create with. It is their favorite time of the day. They are mostly GT and it gives them valuable social skills as well. #ditchbook
Students needed to make cards based on content. The cards had to have content connections to other cards and were categorized by student choice. I wrote about it here. #ditchbookhttps://t.co/4DJ2yCdQP4
Chiming in with another vote for Seesaw. My kids and their parents love it. And I'm just dipping my toes in the water. I want to do more app smashing with it this year. #ditchbook
A3: Students are always invited to incorporate technologies where they feel necessary. I use Edublogs and Canva, and am looking into using Anchor as a way to create with podcasts. I still have students who prefer the paper-pencil method, which is just fine by me! #DitchBook
Yes! I feel like the scale can be "balanced" with more creation. We should provide the scaffolding, background, or the diving board before our students take control of the direction of their learning. #ditchbook
A3: My students use google drawings, slides, @Screencastify, @nearpod, @Flipgrid, & @padlet (when it was free). Basically, whatever tool lends itself to what we set out to accomplish. #DitchBook
A3: Ss create with @canva , @WeVideo , #googledrawings , slides, shoe boxes, poster board, etc. Can’t tether creativity to a tool. It should match the Ss goals and passions. Without tech - skits, TED Talks, models, news articles. #DitchBook
Ain't this the truth?! I've been reflecting on this while teaching. I'm so proud of my students as they are creating some amazing products with skills that are so transferable to the real-world! #ditchbook
Students get an ENORMOUS advantage when they create.
In a world full of consumers, the ones who can create -- and do it well -- will inherit the future. #DitchBook
A3- @Seesaw is our digital tool of choice for movies, etc. My kiddos can take a simple Lego photo and add backgrounds and audio to have their creation "come to life". They create plays, etc. Ah-mazing! #ditchbook
I don't have a lot of opportunity to use technology teaching dyslexia classes, but my students do love using ed puzzle because they can work at their own pace and re-listen when needed. They also love making Flipgrid shorts for various reasons. #ditchbook#READ5305
A3: The GSuite apps, @AdobeSpark various video production tools like @WeVideo and iMovie, audio programs like @soundtrap and Garageband, the list goes on... #ditchbook
A1: we use CCP (Consume, Critique, Produce) to help students understand different concepts and trends. This helps develop strong creators. Students are always doing a bit of both all the time, although it varies depending on the learning journey. #DitchBook
A3 G Suite tools, Flipgrid, SeeSaw, Screencastify, and Adobe Spark. Also use Lego WeDo 2.0
Students created a mural on our construction wall during remodeling. #ditchbook
A3: With tech: Flip Grid, Google Classroom, Google Docs
Without tech: Building with boxes and paper, magna tiles, legos, lots of blank paper! #DitchBook
A3: Littles LOVE the @LeapFrog All About Feelings app that allows them to create their own emotion story books! In terms of creation without technology, it's so important to provide early el. students with toys and play time so they can use their imaginations to create.#DitchBook
A3- Without tech- All types of Blocks, STEM bins (a TpT find that is now being sold by a bigger company) and buckets of random loose parts. Guess which is my Ss favorite???? (spoiler alert- All the random loose parts!). #ditchbook
A3: we use lots but https://t.co/zCkH6iu7dg, flipgrid, and anything Google. Without, we have great resources from our steam program for robots, Legos, and other building tools. #DitchBook
A3: I try to introduce new apps while also encouraging them to use apps they already love. Without tech, we do a lot of colored pens/paper activities. I'm big on note taking. Colorful notes organized however they want. #DitchBook
A3: When there isn't any technology available, I have students create presentations and give specific requirements like use all the space in the classroom, include interaction with the audience, and multiple forms of engagement. #ditchbook
A3: Littles LOVE the @LeapFrog All About Feelings app that allows them to create their own emotion story books! In terms of creation without technology, it's so important to provide early el. students with toys and play time so they can use their imaginations to create.#DitchBook
A2: Younger kids I have worked with tend to use visual arts as their means of creation just because of their skill set. It's very clear that these younger students are extremely creative, but they get fewer opportunities to express their creativity as they get older #DitchBook
A3: Non-tech: The power of conversation about books, a process, content, etc. The power of just human connection and discussing similarities we have. My favorite part of running @ProjectLIT_HOU! #DitchBook
My kids LOVED #geniushour because of using all these creation tools! They didn't want the school year to end - HONESTLY! They were so into their genius-selves! #DitchBook
Someone introduced me to bullet journaling. I still can't tell whether it's a fancy name for what I already do, or something different... but I'm intrigued. #DitchBook

A2 In our ELA classroom we used @BookCreatorApp to publish books we shared in guided reading or just because Ss loved the same title. We also used @Flipgrid & @Kidblog to amplify Ss voice in authentic ways about books they had read. 🙌😊 best of luck! #Ditchbook

A4: Read #tlap. @burgessdave has great hooks for Ts and Ss. Ask Ss for proj ideas. Visit a colleague’s class w rep for creative lessons. Ask ?s. Take a quiet walk until inspiration hits. Ask your PLN. Read a blog — @DitchThatTxtbk@jmattmiller#DitchBook
Suggestion #1 is to release control. Find out what your students want to create. Mine love Legos and Magna Tiles. So we start with those. Then they "build" from there. #ditchbook
We used pixton this year to create a story of a historical figure working in one of the major industries in MN before the labor movement. Much more exciting than taking a test #ditchbook
A4: #DitchBook and ditch everything else that's stifling you. Start by borrowing creativity from others if you're stuck, and then start taking risks. It will pay off. #DitchBook
A4: Collaborate. Meet with other Ts, go to conferences and learn with other Ts. Take time to let it digest and then start thinking about how you can incorporate it. #ditchbook
A4: Find the WHY of the lesson and examine the output. Once you know what you want Ss to do, then you can design a way to get students to think critically with a creative output. Don't get stuck on the tech just to have tech in the lesson. It has to connect! #DitchBook
A4: I encourage this teacher to talk to her students. What are they using? @Minecraft@YouTube Start with the Students. They are creative by nature. #ditchbook
A4: Collaborate with colleagues, don’t just “stay in your lane.” Many qualms I hear involve seeing creativity as “artsy” and not applicable to maths and sciences, but probably stem more from lack of confidence in implementation/ideas.
Lead by example! #DitchBook
A4:
1. Don't be afraid to fail
2. Have a clear plan going in, but be adaptive on the fly.
3. Ask for constant feedback, honesty, and reflection from the kids of how you can constantly make it better.
4. Have ways to constantly redefine the term for a variety of kids
#ditchbook
A4: Provide unconventional materials that they aren't used to seeing, give them plenty of time to create, set very loose guidelines on what they should be creating, comment on their ingenuity, display their work! #DitchBook
A4: #JustDoIt similar to getting into a pool, it's best to just jump in. You will learn as you go and it will get better. Always be looking to learn from others and your kids. #DitchBook
A4: Follow your interests, your passion will be contagious. Get on twitter & follow a few peeps who do what you want to do. Look for learning strands to tie into your creativity. #ditchbook
To the teacher who wants more creativity in the classroom:
What encourages/boosts creativity doesn't immediately translate into measurable results.
It won't get you test scores. But over time, it will help cultivate thinkers. #DitchBook
Can you please share more about the problems you share with your students that have multiple answers, then explain? I think you talked about this previously. #ditchbook
A4: Create a rubric with a lot of flexibility, but make sure you have specific learning outcomes. The students will bring their unique ideas to the assignment. #ditchbook
If they have that voice and choice, they will remember what they have learned. "Those things you learn without joy, you will easily forget." #DitchBook
A4: I think it is important to always be collaborating with other teachers especially in the same grade levels and feed off each others ideas.
#ditchbook
