@saratruebridge is away tonight, but let's see who is here to talk about #Resilience in #resiliencechat Again, I'm Rob from Northern California, a 33-year educator, and empowerer of #Resilience Who is here tonight?
We follow a standard Q/A on #resiliencechat, so I'm begin with posing some questions, and I hope you join in and get the twitter conversation going. Let's think about this for a second....
#resiliencechat
Standard education has been around for a long time, and while we talk about being #Creative#innovation#engagement, many of our schools look frighteningly similar to some original school houses where it all began. How can this be?
Q1 #Resiliencechat We often speak about the need for #creativity and #innovation and #engagement in our classrooms, right? Have you considered how this might impact the resilience development of our students, and teachers if we really moved in this direction?
Interesting, I don't always equate #innovation or #creativity or #engagement as being loud or over stimulating. I think these things can occur in quiet, and still be authentic for the learner as qualifying as all three. #Resiliencechat
A1) We still value (in the sense of what is measured and rewarded) what we always have. We’re still held accountable to old standard using tired metrics. Few are championing learning that reflects our modern world. We need to change that first. #resiliencechat
I concur Will! In some weird way we are telling our students that we want to prepare them for the 21st century, yet, we really need to start allowing them to solve the problems of the 22nd! #Resiliencechat Hard to find new, when we are stuck in the old ways!

I am simply thinking about when I was a kid. All the desks were in rows. All the teachers were strict. There was no room for creativity or for anything beyond conventional wisdom. #resiliencechat
A2: there USA freedom of the lack of structure combined with high-level musicianship and the ability to read off and amplify the work of others #resiliencechat
A1. Slight disagreement. SBACC requires agility. We just haven’t recognized it yet. (I stated focusing on teaching kids HOW to think over the standard in 2006). #resiliencechat
Yes, so many current classrooms look exactly the same. This is more of an industrial feel if you will, rather than places to grow, develop, create, find new ideas. We are trying in our build out of new schools, yet, many classrooms need a redesign now! #Resiliencechat

A2) Jam sessions are reflections of musical fluency. It connects the history of learning and knowledge development with the creative expression of unexplored areas of thought. It’s a terrific analogy for the role of modern learning in any content area. #resiliencechat
Q3.#resiliencechat How do you know when one classroom is #creative#innovative#engaging, and another is not? Is it that easy to tell the difference? Our good friend @burgessdave would probably say, "It's easy for me!!!!" HAHAHa, or exactly the opposite!!!! #tlap
A2 A good classroom is always like jazz. Or skateboarding or surfing. We are in a groove. We know the roles, but have an eye on serendipity. #resiliencechat

A3: Talk to the students, it is hard if you look at it from a teacher/educator POV, you need to get all the angles of what is happening #resiliencechat
A1 we have to “eat our own dog food”. You can’t spend all year telling teachers to teach ONE way and then ask them to be creative. It’s everyone. All the time. And failure has to be okay. #resiliencychat
A3 I reckon you'd know by observing how kids are in the classroom. Do they seem to be thriving or merely surviving day by day until the bell rings? #resiliencechat
#Resiliencechat Exactly @JacobFFSUSD Each student comes with their own perspective, interest, and desires to build more skills. Taking the time to learn about your students, teachers, admin, is essential to knowing what you need to do to help each one learn! #studentvoice

Q4 #resiliencechat Have you taken time to complete a #creativity#innovation#engagement audit in your classroom, or school? Where is it? When does it happen? Who is doing it? What does it look like? How would you know if it exists? Can you ask a friend to tell you the truth?
A4 #resiliencechat Honesty time - When I find myself doing something I was doing one year ago, five years, ago, or 10 years ago, I wonder, why am I doing this, because I used to, need to, or is there another way? This audit of our behaviors can be a huge reflection learning tool.
A3 Easy: in an engaged classroom, everyone participates. There is minimal extrinsic motivation or “charting”. Kids work in small groups on asymmetric projects. And not a #workshit in sight. #resiliencechat

Ducking out early @ResiliencyGuy Feeling really wiped out. Too much going on in real life including the fact that someone stole our van and took it on a joy ride before hitting a cab. Van has been impounded until Christmas, and then we have to pay to get it out. #resiliencechat
Yes, we have had a number of @FairfieldSuisun#educators post signs on their doors, windows, which is creating a place where risks are appreciated, and feedback is normalized. #resiliencechat
A5: too easy to identify creativity as a left brained or right brained trait, all have the ability given the right challenge or opportunity #resiliencechat
Awesome teaching / educating is no accident!
Q6.#resiliencechat
What steps do you take to manage, guide, and support the #creative#innovative#engagement process in your class/school/district?
With a shout out to @burgessdave "It's not easy!!!!!!!!" #TLAP
