Hi-Renee I teach 8th grade ELA at Hershey Middle School. My favorite summer memory involves being with my family and sitting on a beach- the sun, the breeze, the laughter, and the joy that the ocean and sand bring. #formativechat
Lisa Scumpieru, Digital Integration Specialist from Hagerstown, Md. My favorite summer memory is seeing my daughter’s eyes light up at Magical Kingdom. #formativechat
Welcome to another fast and furious round of #formativechat. Please introduce yourself with a favorite quote or summer memory. We'll get question 1 rolling in about 4 minutes.
#formativechat Stevie Budd so gives my favourite funnies, quote wise. Use a lot of quotes to gee me up, get going on goals. Heulwen in Melbourne, reading #ell#eal texts
A1: Essential to designing an effective, engaging lesson (in my mind):
* Open-ended questions
* Giving students choice
* Scaffolding the learning
* Giving students ways to
demonstrate and explain
their learning.
#formativechat
Q1: I think teachers must have a great anticipatory set at the beginning of the lesson to really hook students. I also think hands on activities are very important.
#formativechat
#formativechat A1- any lesson needs to meet learners where they are at and either scaffold understanding or extend learning. Also, putting the learning back into the students hands through self paced activities will help ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn.
A1: I think a good hook or set induction is where it all starts. If I don’t find a way to connect students to the learning then too much of what we do is just Ss jumping through hoops. #formativechat
A1: Great hook with relevance to the world or prior knowledge...Formative check-ins throughout to enhance retrieval practice, well chosen #edtech for blended learning, and a clear ending #formativechat
A1 Real-world topics, student choice/voice in selection, multiple ways to show understanding, opportunities for reflection and revision. #formativechat
#formativechat A1 knowing your learning target for your lesson and helping students accomplish it and certify that they in fact learned it and know how to apply it is what I they is key for a lesson.
A1 I think starting with ss in mind is important. When we can connect what we have to teach to what ss want to learn they are more likely to be engaged. Content and standards are only the what, as ts we must connect the what to the how and most importantly the why #formativechat
A1: Scaffolding and a ‘hook’. Don’t send kids off to work cold turkey. Spend time talking it though. And don’t underestimate enthusiasm. Half the time I sound like a late night infomercial when I’m teaching. #formativechat
My class has changed dramitically as I've shifted to more student centered learning. I am still learning the best practices but it has been a great experience. Thanks for sharing this! #formativechat
A1 - Understanding your students what might have worked one time may work next and visa versa.Have #stuchoice and #stuvoice are important.Understanding outcome and lots of ways to get there. Flexibility. #formativechat
Could not have said it better, if the teacher doesn't know the point of an activity or lesson than how can it ever be good for students! #formativechat
A1 A truly engaging lesson needs to have elements of authenticism and fun. It needs to have hooks like those defined by @burgessdave in #tlap. #formativechat
#formativechat A1- any lesson needs to meet learners where they are at and either scaffold understanding or extend learning. Also, putting the learning back into the students hands through self paced activities will help ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn.
Yes, I think it’s important to mix it up often so that they are constantly showing you their knowledge, but in new ways through new approaches. #formativechat
A1 - Understanding your students what might have worked one time may work next and visa versa.Have #stuchoice and #stuvoice are important.Understanding outcome and lots of ways to get there. Flexibility. #formativechat
A1 The purpose of school needs to be learning and helping children become lifelong learners. Gamification is very motivating
In a game, ss are willing to try over and over again, simply to make it to the next level.
#formativechat
YES! Lessons MUST meet students where they are and scaffolding understanding to meet their needs. Student centered learning is essential for students to develop critical thinking and responsibility. #formativechat
A1 Great set of principles so far. I would add authentic collaboration; the kind that requires the thoughtful contribution and challenge of multiple learners. #formativechat
A1: I think a good hook or set induction is where it all starts. If I don’t find a way to connect students to the learning then too much of what we do is just Ss jumping through hoops. #formativechat
A2: Ss can connect their assessment result to learning goals by looking for the next steps in their learning. What do they have to go back and revisit? What can they do to understand it better? Can they go back to assessment multiple times? #formativechat
A1: Relevance, connect content to Ss lives, there is always a way to make it real for kids, this is highly engaging and makes learning meaningful! #formativechat 😊
#formativechat A1- any lesson needs to meet learners where they are at and either scaffold understanding or extend learning. Also, putting the learning back into the students hands through self paced activities will help ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn.
A1: Great hook with relevance to the world or prior knowledge...Formative check-ins throughout to enhance retrieval practice, well chosen #edtech for blended learning, and a clear ending #formativechat
A1: One thing my Ss should be able to the answer is this: "How will I every use what you are teaching me today? I encourage them to ask me or talk with one another if that is not clear. We have objectives/standards, but an effective lesson makes them relevant. #formativechat
A2: I give my Ss a variety of checklists the first day of the unit so they can track where they are as we progress through the activities. They can take more time or less depending on their comfort level with the topic #formativechat
Students chart progress throughout the year. For example, using a base line, middle of the year, and end of the year test.
Make sure to go back and review areas of concern.
#formativechat
#formativechat A2-This is something that I’m working on for next year. I was to use a product called @seesaw to create ongoing digital portfolios where students will create smart goals and then reflect on their assessments using audio that can be shared with their parents.
A2: #formativechat as a former ELA teacher, I like to give the students an interactive rubric where they track their own progress and set future goals and constantly review them. I also agree with @lscumpieru to continue the tracking of progress
A1: If we think about making the students an #EmpoweredLearner as @iste suggests it is really about bringing them into their personal goal making and contributing in the assessment creation #formativechat
A1 Student voice and choice is essential to engage kids. There must be authenticity in their tasks and engage them where they are in their learning journey. #formativechat
Yes. I love the idea of making the learning applicable to the real world. What skills are they building that will help them when they encounter frustration and challenge in their careers? How can they mature a growth mindset? #formativechat
A1: One thing my Ss should be able to the answer is this: "How will I every use what you are teaching me today? I encourage them to ask me or talk with one another if that is not clear. We have objectives/standards, but an effective lesson makes them relevant. #formativechat
Yes! Planning backwards from the learning target is so important! Need to establish criteria for success and use the data to improve lesson planning! #formativechat
A2: Intentional reflection--Ask students to individually and privately reflect on how they are meeting goals after a lesson and then at the end of the unit. It is also helpful to also ask them how a lesson will be helpful for them in reaching their goal. #formativechat
A2: I used learning target trackers, each Ss will track where they are on the chart based on the formative assessments and other tasks that they completed #formativechat
A2- Reflecting on their learning. I loved this article about ss reflecting their answers on a multiple choice test.
https://t.co/xFMfQXrO8t#formativechat
A2 I give ss a rubric before they start a new unit this way they know up front what they need to do. I give a lot of formative feedback along the way to help move ss along from one column to the next. Ss need to see their growth and feel like they are moving #formativechat
Great point Autumn. I do not have students create enough assessments. I still stuggle to get them to ask fair but challenging assessments. #formativechat
A2: I’m a bit of a broken record on this...but if you haven’t used single point rubrics yet you need to check out @cultofpedagogy. My students - and parents- find them so helpful to understand which learning targets they are hitting. #formativechat
A2 Blend learning opportunities with assessment conferences to either place students in their areas of need or plan short term goals for improvements to meet learning objectives. #formativechat
A2: Guide them along the path toward goals by processing the assessment results with them-what worked, what didn’t...mediate their thinking so they see can visualize their results and how they can reach their goals #formativechat
A2: If we allow students or participants that ability to have a say in their personal goal making then they can take ownership as the course continues. Making time for self check-ins along the way #formativechat
A2: Having students set their own personal learning goals and track/adjust those goals as the year goes on is crucial. Giving students formal feedback is necessary for students to progress towards goals. I love using Google Docs to give comments on student writing #formativechat
Yes! Planning backwards from the learning target is so important! Need to establish criteria for success and use the data to improve lesson planning! #formativechat
A2: Rewriting standards or learning goals using student friendly language can help them understand the reason for assessment and it’s relevance. If you write an objective on the board without explanation it looks like a secret code to your class! #formativechat
A2: As I'm diving back into the classroom next year, I'm looking forward to using the single-point rubric. Love the simplicity and clarity. Will offer a chance to re-do and modify. #formativechat
A2 - Celebrate First Attempts In Learning and acknowledge them as part of learning process so assessment seen as a way to grow and continue to learn rather than a number or to say the learning on the concept is now complete. Building relationships essential. #formativechat
A2: We always make time to explore questions together that the class struggled with on a formative assessment. We then take these concepts and reconnect them to the learning activity. #formativechat
I love how you bring up gamification! When do right, it can help students sustain engagement from day to day as they work towards larger objectives/ mastery! #formativechat
Including student interest is so important too! I want to try to incorporate their interests in the choices I provide for final products more often this year #formativechat
A2: Having students set their own personal learning goals and track/adjust those goals as the year goes on is crucial. Giving students formal feedback is necessary for students to progress towards goals. I love using Google Docs to give comments on student writing #formativechat
A2 my Ss track their data using a growth chart...they color code and graph...it is placed in their ISN...they then have a written reflection explaining the standards they mastered/ didn’t master and what they did leading up to the assessment to grow as a student #formativechat
A2 - Celebrate First Attempts In Learning and acknowledge them as part of learning process so assessment seen as a way to grow and continue to learn rather than a number or to say the learning on the concept is now complete. Building relationships essential. #formativechat
Formative has helped build a foundation of growth versus results. Ss love being abel to see where they were & where they are. I will never forget the words of a S in my class "I finally feel smart; I am learning even if I do not have an A or B. #formativechat
I focus on fostering a growth mindset with my third graders, and we work hard to develop the mindset that mistakes are okay, and we learn from them and keep trying! The Power of "Yet" is so true....you just haven't gotten it yet. #formativechat
A3: GoFormative - Show My Work - I love the students to find images to connect their understanding and then explain why they chose the image. It is always very powerful. #formativechat
A1 I feel that creating hands on relevant lessons are key to engaging students...we need to move from being teacher centered to more student centered #formativechat
Yes! I work hard with my students to develop a growth mindset where they take feedback as a piece that helps them get to their goals. We love the power of "yet"! #formativechat
A3: Honestly, as basic of an idea as it is, I often give them very limited instructions "You need to show me x, y, z" and past that, they're on their own and can use any medium they want to demonstrate. They absolutely EXCEL with this every. single. time #formativechat
Yes @davidwkwan and students need to be supported in respectfully challenging each other for increased understanding or improved work product #formativechat
A2 Our S lrng is built upon other Ss work. As wrtrs publish their pieces, we all lrn & grow from each other's efforts. "?s & Compliments" for ea other is integral. Once we see the possibilities of other Ss work, we can each reflect & set new goals for our own lrng. #formativechat
A2- Have the goals in S friendly terms and posted. Give students time to reflect and improve. Having Ss set learning goals for themselves is really impt. #formativechat
A3 I love having home groups where ss have time to check in with each other especially since I’ve implemented flexible seating. I also love genius hour and book clubs. Anytime ss can take ownership of their learning everybody wins!! #formativechat
Totally agree- asking students to tell me what the results mean and what their next steps happen after I have modeled this type of thinking with my own reflection questions and guiding them through the process. #formativechat
I like to ask open ended questions using @goformative and then hide the names and project and discuss the answers to the class. This allows students to answer anonymously yet still get immediate feedback. I also use @Flipgrid to ask open ended questions as well. #formativechat
A3: It starts with student choice, but I do make suggestions. One of my favorites that I am trying to masters is having students create memes. Usually as a reflection connected to a key concept. #formativechat
A3 ts have used this choice board for ss to show what they know in a creative way.
https://t.co/CXoKr1ae3D
Ss submit their work on the google form. Then the ts share the spreadsheet from the google form so other students can see the creations.
#formativechat
Looking for Q3? Here it is one more time!
Q3: What are some of your favorite activities or methods to allow students to creatively communicate their thinking? #formativechat
A3: I like for them to help me develop an activity with an app or website that they enjoy. I also like for them to connect text with art that they have created, blog, and make videos. Anything, really that they would like to do. #formativechat
A2 We discuss the assessment from the beginning, during lessons, so it is connected from the beginning. After Ss take the assessment we review and reflect #formativechat
A3: Anything goes! Kids need to seek and find, test and revise the tools they use for any particular task, let Ss know that creativity is valued, encouraged and again, help them explore the possibilities in creating their authentic learning! #formativechat
A3: Flipgrid - I love to have Ss read their work the way it was intended to be read. They respond to one another and tell what mood they felt. It allows them to understand tone and mood so much if they practice it as authors/readers in real time. #formativechat
A3: Blind Formatives - Using any formative tool in a way to introduce the material in a formative and have students be introduced to the concept through an assessment. It makes them want to learn more to go back and defeat the assessment and know more. #formativechat
making #chocolatechipcookies with my daughter won out to #formativechat tonight. Will look over resources and ideas. Thanks to those who participated and shared :)

A3: creating social media posts, even if they are just hung up in the classroom. Also guides them in learning to be positive forces with social media. Always looking for ways to integrate DigCit practice. #formativechat
A3 Love student made and led videos either explaining what they know or exploring new topics. They share with the group and are excited to be a part of the spotlight for a moment as the teacher. @Flipgrid is a great way to achieve this collaboration. #formativechat
A2 Blend learning opportunities with assessment conferences to either place students in their areas of need or plan short term goals for improvements to meet learning objectives. #formativechat
A3: I love using abstract art as a vehicle for kids to express critical thinking related to literacy read alouds. Kids accompany their art with an artist statement. The creation of the art really helps kids deepen their thinking. #formativechat
A3: A3: My students love using memes or using the site https://t.co/hxR0I8isSW to create their own pics to demonstrate their learning. "MIndset Moments" on post its or @padlet are engaging ways to share learning in a creative way. #formativechat
A3: Loved using Quick Writes and 1,2,3 Exit Tickets in high school. They also enjoy “texting” what they know using “textese” and emojis! #formativechat
A3: I love to give students choice to use create their own finished products. Give them expectations for the final product and "must have" items and then allow them to choose how they present it. iMovie, collages, written reports, etc. #formativechat
A3- I love giving students choices to show their thinking through technology, art, or writing. Giving students a choice gives them control & confidence of their learning. #formativechat
A3 - Using @goformative features with other edtech tools has provided a variety of ways for Ss to communicate. Also a fan of using #minecraftedu to have students creativity communicate. Open to other medium as well such as videos or podcasts. #formativechat
A2: As I'm diving back into the classroom next year, I'm looking forward to using the single-point rubric. Love the simplicity and clarity. Will offer a chance to re-do and modify. #formativechat
A3 @flipgrid of one of my favorites, and my Ss! I use it to explain math problems and as a reading log. ss have to answer a big idea question every week and reply to classmates. #formativechat
#formativechat A1- any lesson needs to meet learners where they are at and either scaffold understanding or extend learning. Also, putting the learning back into the students hands through self paced activities will help ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn.
Thanks everyone for a great half hour. Remember the best learning experiences don't have an endpoint. Please continue to make connections and share ideas! #formativechat
#formativechat a3 My ss knew ingredients of linguistic success. That way when they beat them together, they are recipe bound. Creative or logical, it worked in our LOTE room

A3: (cont.) We did a novel study and as the end of the book assignment students had to create a project. Choices included new book covers, collages, mobiles with hanging illustrations and captions, movie posters, video "commercials", etc. #formativechat
gifs and responses are student favorites too. I want to try some kind of "learning snaps" but on our class Instgram to capture Ah-ha moments, growth celebrations... just thinking through that... we need to celebrate learning moments more - not just end results. #formativechat
Lisa just shared an awesome idea for using the #goformative SYW Q! A picture says a thousand words! Let your Ss say it by sharing one with you! #formativechat#BLC18
A3: GoFormative - Show My Work - I love the students to find images to connect their understanding and then explain why they chose the image. It is always very powerful. #formativechat
Thanks! It was my pleasure to be part of this all tonight. I hope everyone has a great summer. If you need anything connected to teaching and learning I am only a tweet or a blog post away. #formativechat

It's great to hear from you, Stephanie :) Agreed, providing the right variety of ways for Ss to engage in learning is key! #multisensorylearning#formativechat
A3. By creating quizzes for peers/teachers. I found that students enjoy sharing what they have learned by preparing more questions on the topic, which often leads to more learning opportunities. Kahoot is perfect for this. #formativechat
Great point! Peer reflection is essential to self-reflection! It can teach Ss to ask themselves the right questions and critique accurately #formativechat
I often offer it as a choice. It is not for every Ss, but for some of my students, they just shined showing their understanding this way. #formativechat
Hello friends. #formativechat tirst-timer, Clement , STEAM Coordinator from Switzerland, currently on summer break in Malaysia. Looking forward to learn from you all!

Another question which might be interesting to discuss: What principles do you believe are essential to design an effective, engaging & empowering learning environment? #formativechat
A3: This year I started using gallery walks to introduce my ELLs to new units and vocab write their own hashtags on post-it notes next to the gallery images or docs. Great way to get students to meet each other and collaborate too. #formativechat
