#miched Archive

The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.

  • conrad_chris Nov 1 @ 8:09 PM EDT

  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Q2: What do you find to be the most challenging part of using #OER in your classroom? #miched
  • danieltmares Nov 1 @ 8:17 PM EDT
a2: Being able to navigate the vast collection of them and confirming that they are actual #OER #michED
  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2: An easy answer... time availability is a HUGE issue when trying to ditch the textbook and replace with open resources. #MichED
  • conrad_chris Nov 1 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Thanks. From the link: "Some is copyrighted by NYSED ..." so not a true #oer? I've used Engage before, but some had no mods. #miched
    In reply to @ronhoutman, @danieltmares
  • techsavvyed Nov 1 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2: the most challenging part of OER materials is the disjointed nature of them. Have to assemble/coordinate them yourself. #michED
  • danieltmares Nov 1 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2: also, many Ts I've spoken with want something more out of the box like a textbook without additional work #michED
  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2: /2 Many teachers struggle with having a aligned scope and sequence document to follow. OER are resources but are not curriculum. #miched
  • conrad_chris Nov 1 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2: In addition to assembling yourself, when the host site changes/disappears #miched #backupplan
  • LibraryL Nov 1 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2: I believe challenge is finding quality OERs that meet a specific classroom need. Agree with time issue. #miched
  • jrommel Nov 1 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2 - I think it can be overwhelming to locate quality OER / and when you find them challenging to keep a current 'best of' list #miched
  • danieltmares Nov 1 @ 8:19 PM EDT
They just added some to Google slides via add-on. Exciting for a frequent Chromebook user #michED

  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:19 PM EDT
Agreed - so much 'stuff' and so little available time to craft them into something that one is happy with or can 'deliver'. #MichED
    In reply to @techsavvyed
  • RMWynkoop Nov 1 @ 8:19 PM EDT
Yes! This is a challenge. When and how to incorporate. Can be misinterpreted as curriculum instead of resource #OER #MichED
    • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2: /2 Many teachers struggle with having a aligned scope and sequence document to follow. OER are resources but are not curriculum. #miched

You mean those aren't the same thing!? #miched
    In reply to @RMWynkoop
  • conrad_chris Nov 1 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2: Keeping track of your #oer in your lesson plans. I plan digitally. Links go there. Or use @diigo outlines. Or gKeep. #miched
  • danieltmares Nov 1 @ 8:21 PM EDT
So true! It's difficult for some Ts to see how they line up and compare. #michED
    In reply to @ronhoutman
  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:21 PM EDT
We have to help Ts understand #OER isn't 'curriculum in a box' - rather they are resources that can be used in lieu of a textbook #miched
    In reply to @RMWynkoop
  • AnnSmart17 Nov 1 @ 8:21 PM EDT

And the sites that are used tend to be overwhelming when searching! #michED
    In reply to @jrommel
  • LibraryL Nov 1 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A2: Also think as #OER as 'additional' resource to current text books. This may be a first step to many accepting OER #miched
    • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:21 PM EDT
We have to help Ts understand #OER isn't 'curriculum in a box' - rather they are resources that can be used in lieu of a textbook #miched

Q3: Should a school district have a policy where teacher created resources are Creative Commons licensed by default and shared? #miched
  • conrad_chris Nov 1 @ 8:26 PM EDT
/2 Find extra resources when text doesn't have exploration or next better visuals or.... This is a place to start. Fix the broken #miched
  • jrommel Nov 1 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3 - It says a lot about a district if it has to have a rule/policy to share! #miched
  • danieltmares Nov 1 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3: when I saw the Smore I was excited for this question. Law on subject is way out of date! I am all for sharing! #michED
  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3: Many district contracts specify that content developed while in the employ of the district are 'owned' by the district. #MichED
  • techsavvyed Nov 1 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3: Teacher created resources should be their own intellectual property, free to do with what they see fit. #michED
  • jrommel Nov 1 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A3 / I would think some of this would depend on when content was created - if it's all done at home then perhaps not district owned? #miched
  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:29 PM EDT
Right - that's where it gets interesting... determining the where. #miched
    In reply to @jrommel
  • sarahyogidds Nov 1 @ 8:29 PM EDT
#miched I would love to see some schools go for these! @NetworkMIEd
  • RMWynkoop Nov 1 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3: complicated. legal precedent and law for intellectual ownership being the district, not the teacher https://t.co/oZYyPiIGXk #Miched
  • conrad_chris Nov 1 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3: As a T working for a district, often my work is a result of my Ss needs. I'm happy to share of someone else finds use. #miched
  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3: EdSurge had a good article on 'ownership' of intellectual property a couple years back: https://t.co/7cB5maannH #miched
  • danieltmares Nov 1 @ 8:32 PM EDT
I don't disagree. Playing devil's advocate, even if done at school with school resources on school time? #michED
    In reply to @techsavvyed
  • conrad_chris Nov 1 @ 8:32 PM EDT
A3: Also, my "new" idea is often build on other ideas I picked up at a conference or from another book. Not sure what's mine anyway. #miched

Here's a short excerpt on intellectual property and school ownership: #MichED

Q4 of #miched chat is coming up
  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:34 PM EDT
Q4: Of the plethora of OER online, what is your favorite site or resource you think everyone should know about? #MichED
  • conrad_chris Nov 1 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A3: #miched solution! 1) Pay Ts a lot more money. 2) Create a central resource site by topic 3) Save on materials 4) ... 5) Ss benefit!
  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A4: My favorite is CK-12 - great content and ability to create your own custom eBooks and add your own content too. #miched
  • LibraryL Nov 1 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A3: Even if all resources from all teachers are Creative Commons & shared. Need to have some quality vetting to share wider audience #miched
  • danieltmares Nov 1 @ 8:36 PM EDT
Needs to be updated!!! That also applies for music, TV, and movies! #michED
    In reply to @ronhoutman

A4: Also - the Michigan Open Book Project is AWESOME - https://t.co/JiJNJoDFWG #MichED
  • conrad_chris Nov 1 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A4: Said it before. @geogebra for the math class is amazing! Can create own materials. Can create "books", activities, etc. #miched
  • jrommel Nov 1 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A4 - I think Khan academy has had an overall positive impact on education - though at times overused #miched
  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:39 PM EDT
I like how you can embed the @geogebra content right into your LMS as well. Good choice. #miched
    In reply to @conrad_chris, @geogebra, @geogebra

  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:44 PM EDT

  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:45 PM EDT

#GoOpenMichigan group working to have @OERCommons Michigan portal become 'go to' resource for Michigan Ts #miched

  • danieltmares Nov 1 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A5: analyzing primary sources with students being the history detectives! #michED
  • ronhoutman Nov 1 @ 8:47 PM EDT
