Thanks for coming, Breck!
A1: A risk is an action/reaction/contribution that comes with a personal vulnerability attached - social, emotional, intellectual
Kristina AP in elementary school in Alberta Canada!
Hi, Kristina! It's good to see you again!
what up Breck! What an awesome name!
Hey - Don - MS Principal - Long Island
A1: Anything that takes you outside your comfort zone!
The amount of amazing people here tonight is phenomenal- this is going to be a great chat!
A1:
Pushing oneself to the point of possibly making a mistake, feeling embarrassed, &/or failing.
No guarantee it will work out
A1 - A risk is something that you are unsure of the results-success/failure/in between- it could leave you vulnerable- stretches you
A1: Risk is opportunity... opportunity to see our students grow, opportunity to see something new work.
A1: anything outside of one's comfort zone
What a great - and entirely unexpected answer! Nice one!
A1: Rusk is stepping outside the comfort zone to try something new, scary, challenging, or some combination of that.
Love your positive def of risk!
A1Risk is the theme of the first unit in our reading book. Been talking about risk/ consequence. https://t.co/yIlwcFvchW
A1 Doing something without knowing if it will be successful.
Hi Everyone! Kheila-Innovation Specialist from PA
Risk is opportunity...
Well said, Michelle! https://t.co/d43Ggx6ykI
A1: Risk is opportunity... opportunity to see our students grow, opportunity to see something new work.
It really is pretty great!
A1) Other than the board game...RISK is an exposure to DANGER! 🔥🔥🔥
A1. Stepping outside your comfort zone
What stories go along with the theme?
Welcome! Thanks for coming!

A1 A risk is anything without a predictable ending. Paula from KY
well said! All the way around! Vulnerability speaks to me!
A1 Risk is the uncertainty of a result. However unforeseen attempting the feat for the betterment of every student.
A1: Risk is "giving it a go"...being open to something even when the possibility of failure exists...it's a willingness to learn
A1 Doing something where the outcome is unknown and that may turn not out, yet the rewards can be amazing https://t.co/aQV7UHPAkO
A1: Risk can also be calculated ...is it worth doing?
thanks sir! Couldn't resist!
A1. Stepping out of one's comfort zone, without fear of failure to better oneself or classroom through error and reflection
Risks have unknown endings. Absolutely - that is a key element. The fun, the adventure, the learning..
https://t.co/6JTwAfhhPg
A1 A risk is anything without a predictable ending. Paula from KY
great answer! Welcome Paula!
A1- Risk is doing something even though you know you could fail as easily as succeed.
Q2 is rushing up on us - a Q every 5 minutes tonight...
Risks=times when we move towards adversity, ambiguity. away from safety, comfort, complacency, certainty. Also =chance of sacrifice
The learning from the risk is SO important! Great point!
- hello! Looking forward to tonight!
A1:risk is stepping outside of what is comfortable-an opportunity to learn&grow even though the outcome isn't guaranteed
A1 looking at Risk straighton & cont w/out worry of failure is what makes a great teacher. Risk leads to innovation.
I think sometimes there is absolutely fear of failure, but moving ahead despite that fear!
That is an important moment. I wonder how often we face this?
A2 Ss risk lots. When they give it their all and don't reach their goal, they risk a feeling of failure or losing face with friends.
Yes, that can be very risky for students.
A2 When they don't try, they risk not learning.
Lack of a guarantee is HUGE! Especially in our culture today! Well said! https://t.co/eimcvBXWUs
A1:risk is stepping outside of what is comfortable-an opportunity to learn&grow even though the outcome isn't guaranteed
A2: trying new ideas, strategies, or solutions that they aren't sure if it will work
A1. Risk in the classroom is intentional interaction with uncertainty! Lemarr Treadwell, checking in. https://t.co/QMOfdzfmNN
A2: Ss are open 2 criticism from peers & Ts every day: making a friend, answering ?s, trying new look, giving 100% - all risks
A2 Venturing an answer - in a social setting - with peers - while the idea is still in formation.
Rick from Buffalo, Ed. Consultant. Risk is the new norm and the status quo is the new risk.
A2: I engage Ss in activities, which forces them to take risks. Some are cautious and some dive head first!
Excerpt of Island of the Blue Dolphin, Mrs. Frisby and the Crow,Two Tickets to Freedom, Daedalus and Icarus,
a1 risk is making yourself vulnerable
A1 Risk is passion without fear
Do you think the shift has completely happened or is on its way?
Nothing but the best for (;
how can we help one impact the other?
Everything abt schl is risky 4 many Ss. Meeting expectations of multiple groups. Trying to think abt unfamiliar. Weakness exposed
A2: risks can also happen emotionally in the classroom, making a new friend, making choices, standing up to others
Wow! What a literature combination!
I like this version https://t.co/VajlDYdxmc
A1: Risk is "giving it a go"...being open to something even when the possibility of failure exists...it's a willingness to learn
A2: I wish mine took more risks. I make it safe, but HS Ss have a hard time letting go in front of other Ss.
Kids risk failure --- we MUST teach them that FAILURE = LEARNING
A2: Classrooms invite risk in all forms...what may seem like a simple task for some, may prove an enormous risk for others
A2 trusting Ts to lead them down the right path, collab successfully, finding indep stepping outside comfort zone
A2: Am I right/wrong? Do I fit in/not fit in? Say what's on my mind or not? Comply? Engage? Prob most of their day includes risks
A2 S's risk negative feedback or criticism when they express thoughts or opinions that may not be popular.
I'm finding that it can also be public passion displayed, despite the fear.
agreed & I'm not sure. I think until we learn to step out of our comfort zones it could be more times than we realize
Struggle = learning. Ss risk being told they've failed and not getting another chance.
Yes! I agree it should be for these reasons
Did I say that in a way that made sense?
A2:risk can look different depending on the student. What is a risk for some may be comfortable for others.
I've been waiting for you.
The more the adults model and positive risk taking, the more risks they will take
Letting Ss go at their own speed and not force. They see others, next time is better!
A3: Most growth happens in the margins of proximal development, if they do not risk, they do not learn as much as they could.
A2 Sharing & asking questions in class feels risky to students
A2) Is it risky for Ss to have expectations for school? Teachers? Friend groups? All frustration can be traced back to unmet exp..
Great point! There are many, many factors that students consider all the time - that we many not realize.
I think most educators have had it with doing the same things. When they are bored, their students will be bored.
These are big, important moments. https://t.co/eh0ghe6BF0
A2: risks can also happen emotionally in the classroom, making a new friend, making choices, standing up to others
a2 Ss always risk in classrooms be it social, personal, or ego based from giving an answer to its converse
A2: Risk look a bit different for all kids. Some of my kids (large ell pop) take risks by trying out their thoughts in English.

is it okay if this is a teachers world?
A2: One particular area of risk is the giving and receiving of honest feedback...it takes practice & the development of trust
A2 Ss risk criticism of their ideas everytime they share a thought
Great point! https://t.co/vNefZPerUY
A2:risk can look different depending on the student. What is a risk for some may be comfortable for others.
Agreed!! For Ss, especially those who struggle, risk can be abundant. https://t.co/yYUvrT0bho
A2: Am I right/wrong? Do I fit in/not fit in? Say what's on my mind or not? Comply? Engage? Prob most of their day includes risks
This is so true. It's important for us to remember as educators.
so true! Just like adults-Ss comfort zones can be very different!
Great point! This is important to keep in mind. https://t.co/LRBlvaJkid
A2 Ss risk criticism of their ideas everytime they share a thought
So true, and the Ps trust districts to hire qualified Ts to lead the way
Just messing. Glad you joined.
BOOM! https://t.co/JSBLsJmKXc
Struggle = learning. Ss risk being told they've failed and not getting another chance.

Great point! This is true for learners of all ages! https://t.co/iI6BYQWn4L
A3 without risk there is not growth & indep thinking. Letting go of the constraints Ss place sets them free to learn
I'm not sure we should be asking Ss to "risk" things. Mayb semantics, but that sounds so unsafe. Do they have capital to lose?
A2 Putting there faith in the unknown, trusting the system, answering the expectations put on them
A3 Risk-taking a part of life from infancy-death, they will fail and take criticism. We teach them it's ok… https://t.co/bG6zuzw9U1
true dat! Sun still out on left coast?
A2 Risky raising your hand, confronting classmates 4-Square game can get pretty cut throat in 4th grade.
A3: taking risks is 1 of the most important steps in learning. Ss gain confidence & learn "failures" are part of the process
A3 So they can stretch and realize they can always do better. Taking risks builds courage.
You point is well taken. I like how you are thinking of this carefully.
A2. Without a good teacher students accepts failure as final
A2 When you are blessed to observe other classes you just know when you are in a room where rapport exists to minimize risk.
A3 It is when we overcome great obstacles/risks that the most learning takes place.
I find it very valuable to "hear" the very words that other educators use with students. Thank you for sharing this!
Update: This week the slow chat returns - and it is Web Burst Chat Week!!!
Daily Questions leading up to… https://t.co/iGLeKwOuSB
A4: Every decision is risk-full; we risk winning or losing Ss with our feedback, corrections, challenges, observations & assessing.
YES! And it's not just okay...it's a good thing! Well said Victor!
A3: Taking risk leads to growth. Without growth, there is no learning happening.
So Q4 shifts the focus toward ourselves.
a3 to uncover their thinking for example same prompt in 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades from today… https://t.co/sLN22BkBK0
Some of our Ss like those words - not life threatening but allows them to feel successful
definitely think this is part of the adult world too - think we carry some of that ms with us for life
A3 To push them to another level and help them become the amazing ppl they are meant to become https://t.co/7t7YK6Se89
Sometimes sharing our story with students feels like a risk - and it fuels everyone.
After our conversation today, we're going to try what you shared
A3. Because Ss do not the value or worth in risk!
A3. For me it's about teaching kids about the struggle & the happiness of succeeding or satisfaction of pushing themselves
A4) Sharing our failures models resilience, but vulnerability is never easy
With Risk there needs to be reflection for true growth to occur. Feedback allows Ss to progress & see the big pic
A4: Making lessons engaging and inquiry based. Could fail big time and do Ss still trust in my ability?
A4 I often try something new with each lesson - not always - but when I do, I tell the students I'm taking a risk.
A4- trying new strategies and techniques is risky. I know I've failed as often as succeeded in doing so.
A3: So that they can experience deeper, more meaningful learning.
A1 A risk is showing up late ;) Risk occurs when our inner choice is subject 2 others.assessment/judgement
absolutely! Fear of failure, wasted time, lack of support/buy-in/ownership...I feel ya
The risks we announce are some of the risks that we learn the most from.
a4 Ex as a leader I spent day doing in 5 classrooms K-6, Ts were risking having peers enter classroom and observe
A3: Life is about taking risks and learning that failure is OK as long as you keep trying for success. https://t.co/cljcnCgxvc
Yes and share those stories to let them know Risk leads to success
A4: Educators are vulnerable every day getting up in front their students and being themselves. By showing who they really are.
A4 Ts risk personal judgment from adolescents who brilliantly expose our insecurities
That's a great way to model, I am going to have to try this!
Taking a risk that could lead to a great failure or a great success. Learning is certain! https://t.co/nKDSOd9xOr
A4: Making lessons engaging and inquiry based. Could fail big time and do Ss still trust in my ability?
absolutely! That's why I love blogging. The process is reflective, valuable!
we must be willing to take the risks if we want our Ss to do the same!
I fail publicly.
https://t.co/TPZyTmXSbT
A4- trying new strategies and techniques is risky. I know I've failed as often as succeeded in doing so.
A3: a natural part of the human experience...inviting our St. to take risks better prepares them for the world beyond the classroom
A4: As I lesson plan, I look at myself in the mirror and ask: Do you really think that will work? https://t.co/Gpf0sMms4S
A4: Every lesson is a risk if we are putting our heart & soul into it. Once we decide to personally invest 100%, we are vulnerable
a4b as a T I'm risking trying 20% project, and fostering curiosity, I'm learning again
A4: We encourage students to have a voice and engage in student-driven learning opportunities.

https://t.co/WJYHY2m18a
a4 Ex as a leader I spent day doing in 5 classrooms K-6, Ts were risking having peers enter classroom and observe
A4. A big risk I take is placing relevancy in my instruction as a high priority.
So true!! https://t.co/ED4Y1EiZn0
A4 Ts risk personal judgment from adolescents who brilliantly expose our insecurities
Yes! If we could encourage more of this that would be transformational
A4 Ts take the type of risks that can build dreams, inspire change & make it all worth it. The ss rely on these risks, so take them.
A4 Will Ss be engaged? Will I make connections with Ss? How do I keep learning fun? But follow standards.
I risked hitting publish on a blog post this weekend - and now it's been viewed 3,000 times!!!
Feeling of being judged or being found undeserving
I really think that's it.
Yes. You open yourself up to scrutiny, but also to getting great ideas from peers.

Thank you for risking these insightful comments.
As we risk, we learn - and so do others around us.
You won't be surprised that I think it's a good idea to sometimes post our risks on the wall.
A5. As a teach educating students for tomorrow but not exactly knowing what tomorrow really looks like.
Blog for you. Don't worry about any reactions.
A4 Taking a risk experimenting with Global Read Aloud.. Waited to tell Ss + said, "Well class I've never done this before
You and Craig are rock stars. I'm a young grasshopper!
A4: I feel like everyday can be a risk because we never know what the ads reactions will be or how things I'll turn out.

A3 Risk management may be the most important lesson students learn during their educational experience.
A2: One big S 'risk' is entering a classroom as a new school year begins, not knowing if it will be a year of meaningful learning.
I echo that! That's where the real value is!
A5 Cookie cutter expectations put on Ss to meet expectations at the same time in the same way https://t.co/XW1FRFpsML
This is important to remember!
https://t.co/ESDIb0ydJy
congratulations!🎉 I've found that some of my most successful moments were the ones I was most hesitant to initiate.

Stories are power.

A4: at a time when there's plenty of neg talk about education, it can feel like a risk to speak positively about our profession
I think it's a great idea. It helps with our own growth and also allows for that "hey, I've felt that too" to happen
A5: We can't change every life in ways that we may want to...but we can certainly impact some in significant ways!
A6: because everything is impossible until someone does it!
I am so sorry I am missing this chat . Trying to meet some tight deadlines. Wishing everyone a good week.

identifying the risks we are willing to make public is a worthwhile endeavor in and of itself.
. Not everything is a waste. Lots of great things are happening in ed.
I need to make an early exit tonight -- thank you for the great dialogue on this Tuesday evening
Very few things are impossible. Overcoming fear & doubt equips us w/ the skills needed to be successful in the world.
A5:Impossible to know what Ss need until you build relationships with them.
same here! Always enjoy the journey.
A5: Few things are impossible, just extremely challenging. With effort and belief in power of , miracles can happen
A5 Educators are expected to make a splendid meal with ever-changing ingredients with unknown allergies in the diners everyday.
A6: Often hear 1st year Ss who drop out of Uni b/c they had never failed before and now things got tough https://t.co/0vBGWc5alY
A5 Much learning is lost through a combination of student indifference and bad timing. This makes teaching virtually impossible!
A5 we ONLY learn from hard things
Need to jump out of early! Thanks for leading the risk-taking tonight! See you soon! 😊
A6- once a someone does the "impossible", it is easier the next time, and the time after....
A6: Taking risks to explore the unknown can be life changing!

A4: at a time when there's plenty of neg talk about education, it can feel like a risk to speak positively about our profession
A6 Endurance, determination, Rigor, grit, these skills make the impossible possible.
A6As ss overcome what they once thought was impossible, it opens up a whole new world for them & encourages future beneficial risks.
A6 Because so many things in life seem impossible. The earlier you find out they're not the better.
I am better for it. And, my T's and community of S's would say the same!
A6 We always stretch our students - continually stretch ourselves. What wasn't possible yesterday becomes possible.
Ask Craig before me. He is known as in many circles.
One risk I'll take tonight will be t answer a few questions using webs.
It doesn't sound like a big risk, but felt like it!
A5. Teaching is impossible ... without a structural change in our society.
A6: the more students face what seems impossible, the more likely they are to discover how few things are impossible
A6 impossible: label stuck 4a deemed-task, teach Ss 2question, challenge, prove r prerequisites 2 discovery… https://t.co/KaEri5FskY
A6: Ss need to know that nothing is impossible and failure is OK. We need to teach them to keep trying for success and never give up!
Risks also provide opportunities for invitations.
We can invite others to join our risks.
A6: "Impossible" is part of life. We have to teach kids to approach and work through it for future success.
Why should anything in our classes seem impossible? We should be scaffolding and differentiating to make it all approachable.
A6 To learn what is actually possible 1 must strive for the impossible. We'd all be still laying inert in a diaper without striving.
There will always be something that feels currently out of reach.
Then we go make it happen.
https://t.co/O7yvVQi9fU
A6: "Impossible" is part of life. We have to teach kids to approach and work through it for future success.
This is so true, but can be hard sometimes.

Ss want to change the world ...
Yes, important point. It doesn't mean it is easy.
Feedback, time for reflection, makerspace for choice & innovation, blogging & sharing ideas in a safe community
The worthwhile learning risks offers can be very challenging.
A7: never giving up on them and showing our own vulnerabilities and willingness to push through hard things
A7 Scaffold, encourage, motivate, and cheer as loud as possible
Love this!! https://t.co/2Be4T9yrlZ
Q7 By teaching how to learn, not what to learn. Understanding how to approach a question will show that all is possible to explore
A6
Everything is hard before it is easy. We need to let kids in on this
A7 Get Ss to understand that multiple errors give birth to valuable learning
That shows the power of what happens when we face risks together and share our learning.
Building strong, trusting rel with our Ss. Letting Ss forge strong safe trusting relationships with each other
A7 Build relationships. Teach with dire urgency and bottomless empathy.
It is difficult to overstate the importance of reflection when we face ongoing, challenging learning.

And turning the "I can't" into "You can. Let me walk with you through it." https://t.co/spDH08OgdU
Why should anything in our classes seem impossible? We should be scaffolding and differentiating to make it all approachable.
A7: Create a culture where risk taking is embraced. Empower Ss to take learning beyond the classroom!
A8) If we model risk, failure, and resilience...we foster a culture of juggernauts who learn without fear https://t.co/nOkYeQHmx2
A7: we show our struggle. Authentic modeling of our own processes in pursuit of a goal, in all their down & dirtiness.
A7: we build relationships with students and their families and act as a guide and coach through the daunting task of learning
A8: they need to feel like they are safe and they look for us to lead the way
I so appreciate that you have prepared these answers tonight!
Many Ts starting this year with and lessons. Be a foundation.
A8 like Alice after falling down the rabbit hole, with out taking risks she would never have gotten out or seen truth
A7 Teaching them 2 break a task down into small steps, scaffolding, looking back at past accomplishment & distance already travelled
A8 So that we don't get the same results. We're preparing Ss for a world that is still in the making. Risk=growth & growth=progress
A8: Builds relationships and trust. If you do, they will too.
A7
Believe in our Ss, create a caring environment where risk taking is norm, accept & celebrate diversity. Model empathy & kindness
A8- They need to see our example of what is possible. They also need to see that we make mistakes as well. https://t.co/uxDS4djFeE
Wow! That is a powerful concept and it really makes us think carefully about what we communicate!
A8: I want all my students to listen to the NPR bit "failure IS an option" and know I believe it!

...and consider helping struggling educators impacted by the hurricane!
We constantly redefine what is possible.
A8 So Ss don't feel alone
Let's talk about reflection...
A8 She simply woke up- with a mind full of new challenges she conquered
A8: Ss need to see what's the worst that could happen when someone falls flat on their face? Geez, my T got right back up again!
I always think "What if I'm the only person to say that kids name today..."
A8: students learn by example...we can model the stamina and resilience needed when an unexpected or unwanted outcome occurs
A8: so they know it's ok to fail. So they know it's ok to struggle for success.
A8: Ss are way more willing to take risks when they see adults taking risks. We may be the only adults they see take positive risks.
A8 We mirror for our students, if we don't take risks, fail and learn; how will they?
Boom! It's like freaking out when a toddler falls down. Your reaction determines their psyche!
A9 When we reflect on the "so far" we analyze, and make shifts that help propel us towards the goal.
A9: students don't see small changes in their learning from day to day but reflection makes them see it!
A8: Best learning comes from seeing something in action-This includes the idea of taking a risk. Allow Ss to experience risk w/ us!
A9: I made my Ss say one thing they were proud of every day for a yr. the last day I gave them back all the notes
I meant to share out some quotes along the way. I'll send them out in a burst.
A9) Reflection provides clarity. Allows us to tease out details and find seems for success. https://t.co/k4VDDxPdaJ
A9 At the end of a great journey the learning often happens during the reflection when we take time to think about the road traveled
reflection allows you to see how far you've come, how you've changed, where you still need to go.
A8 To turn not yet into I just did. To feel they achieved a challenge & use that Pride to try new things and take new risks
A9) When we lift weights, we BREAK DOWN muscles. Protein and rest build them back up STRONGER!
A9 It is with reflection that the discovery of impossible made possible becomes reality as 'seeing is believing' :)
Reflection may be the very place where the line between possible and impossible moves significantly.
All I can say is "Wow!!!!" https://t.co/Gq0ZXtCvbs
A9: I made my Ss say one thing they were proud of every day for a yr. the last day I gave them back all the notes
That's powerful and beautiful!
A8. It is important for students to see us as learners. Inspires them to learn!
A9: Reflections also allow us to see what we've done and celebrate! Not always for improvement!
So let's talk about SEEKING challenges.
Thank you for sharing this vantage point!

A9: reflection opens the door between the impossible and the possible...without it, we lack the opportunity to reach for a new tool
A9: when you reflect on what happened and what went wrong then we can start to tweak and adjust to move closer to success.
A9 Introspection is facing fears & conquering them. Recogn you are stronger than you thought. Seeing the how & why.
Q9 I think only with reflection can we actually realize when the idea of impossibility is truly behind us. https://t.co/3BtiVQfPuQ
