Tonight our topic is Knowing Your Opponent. You play them every year, you worked with them. You know exactly what they do
-
-
I am Chris Fisher, OL coach at Ridge Point in MoCity, TX...founder of So far the so good, 2-0
-
Make sure you don't let familiarity create complacency!
-
Michael Scott DC at Rice HS, in Rice, TX. 1-1, working on getting better.
-
-
-
Is it possible to run the West coast offense in high school football these days?
-
Q1: You've faced the same team with the same staff & systems in place for 4 years, how do you game plan with a fresh approach?
-
Jack Dingus, OL Coach, Crooked Oak HS, Oklahoma City, OK
-
A1: We watch for this year's personnel, where they're strong or weak, and may look to use formations we haven't yet
-
A1: You always have to prep like anyone else. They dont always have the same personnel from each year. Always wrinkles.
-
Tom Peck, WR/DB/STC Oldenburg Academy (IN)
-
A1) We refuse to watch old film. We will also "game plan" tricks into practice, making sure that the team isnt complacent
-
A1: We make sure we are giving them different looks, and attacking from various locations. Also, have to adjust to personnel.
-
A1) We always adjust every season to personel. We also set up with known looks, then add wrinkles to fit new skill sets added
-
Q2: How much do you examine the previous year's games to learn from successes and failures?
-
We are 0-2 but we are striving to get better.
-
A2: Depends on how much film we have. If we have 2-3 games from this season, I will focus on this year
-
A2) We discuss score, momentum/effort and turnovers. We dont go back on film usually. New season, new effort. Preach philosophy
-
A2: If they have the same personnel and coaches, I will look at previous years to see what they are doing differently.
-
Q3: Why do you or why don't you pay closer attention to tendencies during this week?
-
A3: If they're running the same system, I will watch to see if they are doing things much differently
-
A3) Tendencies lead to opportunity. If I can find one thing that helps my team win, I will.
-
A3.2) We have 19 players, most with under 4 years experience. We need as much of an edge as legally possible.
-
This! That one thing can be THE difference! https://t.co/FByhwY6wzk

A3) Tendencies lead to opportunity. If I can find one thing that helps my team win, I will.
-
Q4: Your opponent is someone you worked with & runs the same system(s) as you how much new scheme is introduced for that week?
-
A4: Maybe a special play, but nothing more...just line up and see who does it better
-
A4) Havent had this yet. But would surely adjust for personel and his go to plays. Just execute our base better than they do
-
Q5: Have you ever consider changing play signals, etc due to a long history of playing that team and same coaching staff?
-
A3: Always follow the tendencies
-
A5: No...If they are paying attention to our signals, they are missing theirs
-
A4: We will do what we do. I'll give you the plan, if you want. If your any good, you already know what's coming.
-
A5) We have done so, mid game occasionally. We have 3 different ways to call our O... can use them exclusively or tandem
-
-
A5: I have made changes, dummy calls, used wristbands ... Also, have waited then out and made them use all their timeouts!
-
Q6: If the opponent does something you like, would you meet with them in the off-season to discuss how they do it?
-
Mid-game? The LBs were calling out routes and concepts during our cadence. They had a good vid and microphone the season b4
-
Took what we called our "hurry up" signals and charted them on wrist bands. So then we went to "Oregon" mode. Super up-tempo.
-
A6: If they do something better than us that fits into our scheme, I would definitely want to learn from them
-
A6: Most certainly! And, if they like what I do, I'll give it to them. I stole it anyway!
-
A6) Not yet. Though I follow a few on here, so it could happen. But our styles differ vastly from our conference & usuals
-
A2: we watch and break down every snap during off-season. Drives personnel, lifting focus, coaching focus.
-
Q7: Would you be receptive to meeting with a familiar opponent in the off-season to discuss your system?
-
A7: I wouldn't have any issue with it. I want to help out all I can. Again, if they are good they already know what we do!
-
A7) Probably. I trust my guys to run our system to the best of their ability. Can't beat what we know by rote.
-
A7: I'm fine with sharing what we do. We are not reinventing the wheel, but there may be nuances that benefit others
-
Great job tonight! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
-
A1: Hard 2. Basically it becomes you do what you do. Each team especially an offense plays differently https://t.co/ZbsVRXejjI

Q1: You've faced the same team with the same staff & systems in place for 4 years, how do you game plan with a fresh approach?
-
-
A2: A lot you always want to know what worked & changed or what didn't change. https://t.co/dvNtLcivpx
-
-
Q2: How much do you examine the previous year's games to learn from successes and failures?
-
A3: We know what plays we run & try to add a new window dressing each week! https://t.co/f0vhoYQ1Ll
