A1: staff fit is the most important, then money, and always looking for best place to grow and develop my craft, and put up with a loquacious and brash OL COACH!! #hogfbchat
As a young guy I took the first one I found. After that I started to look for a scheme fit so that I would feel more comfortable coaching kids up #hogfbchat
A1: As a current member of #TeamFreeAgent I personally look for best fit personality wise. Scheme is something you can adapt to. But if you don’t like the guys you’re with everyday and night, that’s tough. #hogfbchat
To me my last move was based on state of program, quality of school, quality of administration, dedication of kids and other coaches. Extremely blessed to be at LRCA, its all about being comfortable to hit the ground running and be you in your work place #hogfbchat
A1: when I was first getting into coaching I took whatever I could get, the last two years I’ve tried to fit into a system that I want to run when I’man OC/HC #hogfbchat
A1.) Best fit. Location and how do I connect with the HC and assistants that I meet? Clicking right away does wonders for the season. As a position coach, you have to learn to adapt to a system, not the system adapt around you. #HogFbChat
Well my next move I’m hoping will be HS Head Coach so I wanna find a place that I think has a successful culture or a place that I can instill that culture. Schemes can come after that. #hogfbchat
A1: I look at the staff that I’ll fit in with. I can adjust to scheme and I can adjust to culture (unless it’s a bad culture). But if I’m going to spend hours on end with dudes, I better get along with them. #hogfbchat
A1. I was looking for best fit in terms of culture when I was an assistant coach. Once I began looking for head coaching positions I was looking for a school with potential, but somewhere I could build a program. #hogfbchat
A1) Actually looking for a job, I’m looking for best fit for my family outside of football and whatever I can get on the field (minus Flexbone/ Wing T) #hogfbchat
A1. Coached at three schools for two head coaches. Current HC I work for, 13 years, I have known since we were 4. Not real experienced in job hunting. We are a package deal and so is our scheme. #hogfbchat
A1. Best fit. My dad is a retired coach. He told me that at my young age to find a small school that will give me lots of coaching opportunities (multiple positions in football and other sports) and a good place to teach. Then grow where you’re planted. #hogfbchat
A1 - I am always looking for comfort. Scheme can’t be learned/taught, but comfort can’t. You have to be comfortable with the assistant coaches/HC and the community. Is it a place I would bring my kids is my answer. If that answer is no, it’s not the place for me #hogfbchat
A1: I would look for the best fit first, I honestly feel comfortable in any scheme (have to learn up about some of the more exotic) but if it was getting close to August-time, I’d take what I could get. #hogfbchat
A1: I'd say a combination of all three. You can't be picky but if you don't fit with the scheme or the staff then what's the point? I'm also a big "Bloom where you're planted" guy. Do the best you can where you are and you don't have to worry about the next job. #hogfbchat
A1: best fit. I’ll coach what I’ve got for athletes in the scheme the OC wants (unless I’m the OC!). Staff has to be a fit. Have to trust OC & O staff and they need to trust me, and be on same page. #hogfbchat
A1) Before graduating college it was whatever i could get, then got the opportunity to coach at Alma mater with some dear friends. Then it was follow the teaching gig #hogfbchat
A1: every job I’ve gotten has had something special about it. Fortunately I’ve never really been in a position where I “had to” find another job. Been lucky, it all could end at any time, but I’ve left on my terms when I left. Learned something everywhere along the way #hogfbchat
A1- I can learn schemes. I am looking for a good fit with the coaching staff and the program. (Did I mention I was still looking for a job?) #hogfbchat
A1. I think it’s a little bit of all three. You need to find somewhere that you fit in with, and where you can share your knowledge to benefit the kids. #hogfbchat
A1 best fit with time commitment and the head coach you’re going to work for. Principles and values are important and need to align. Scheme, really, is arbitrary when looking for a new gig. #hogfbchat
A1 Best fit. As much time as you spend with these people I think you want to: 1) Get along 2) Grow as a coach and person and 3) Feel like you are appreciated and valued #hogfbchat
A1: Think it depends on your journey. Early on it was whatever I could. Now it’s people, culture, willingness to work. As a coach, we should make our scheme fit our personnel anyway, AMIRIGHT? #hogfbchat
A1: fortunate to be somewhere that I have no desire to leave. However, when looking for jobs in the past, best fit was priority. Particularly staff chemistry, and a strong HC. Also opportunity to positively impact kids #hogfbchat
A1: if I was looking, it would be about the teaching job first. Then the admin support, community, school, location, facility...ability to build a staff there. There’s a lot to consider when it comes to looking at leaving one good situation for “greener pastures”
#hogfbchat
A1: Best fit. You want to make sure your visions, personality, and cultures align. In doing so great things can happen. A wise coach once told me you can win anywhere but you can’t win everywhere. When culture and visions align all it takes is time. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat Q1: I feel like scheme fit and best fit go hand in hand. That'd be my first thing to look at. BUT O-Line is all about adapting and overcoming, so learning a new system or how you can implement your knowledge into the new program could be a killer self investment!
A1) Well in Iowa teaching comes 1st, so I was lucky that I was able to find a school where I could teach the subjects I wanted to and there was also a head football job open as well, perfect fit for me. Wouldn’t want to be anywhere else! #hogfbchat
A1 cont: in my humble opinion, the best coaches can adjust to what’s thrown at them and can make it work. That’s why I hate when college coaches say they need 2 years to get “there guys” in #hogfbchat
A1) I think it’s best fit with program. Do your core values represent something I can get behind? A good coach can teach others their system. If I need to learn I can. I can’t get behind someone who doesn’t support his staff and players accordingly. #hogfbchat
A1: if your a HFC who has a system you better be looking for a community that will embrace your X and O package, example I am a Veer #DinosaurFBCoach , not popular in suburbs or metro areas, or affluent communities. Needs a middle class blue collar mentality IMHO #hogfbchat
A1b: I also try not to be married to a scheme. I’ve gone from the spread to the Flexbone. Could go back to the spread or end up in the double wing on the next one, who knows. Offense is all about putting your kids in the best place to be successful. Whatever that is #hogfbchat
A1: though 1. I think it depends on where in the process you start. Early in go for best fit. If it’s late in the process and you don’t have time to learn something new, go for best scheme fit. If you aren’t coaching what you know I think it’s a disservice to the kids.#hogfbchat
A1: Recentlyturned down HC job. Wanted to do my own thing but it was in need of complete culture rebuild with no job in building. My son is also going to b a freshman next yr and loves where we r so he has veto authority lol. love where I am so would have to b perfect #hogfbchat
A1) I only look for people who I know and trust. I learned the hard way by taking what was available & it was not fun, at all. Miserable, in fact. If I’m going to spend time away from my family it better be for someone I get along with & respect. #hogfbchat
A1: at this point in my career I'm working in a zone based offense that is balanced pass/run. I'm fortunate that I get to work in a spread offence for a coach I've worked for before and known for years. If I had to run wing T or similar at this point you'd have to #hogfbchat
A1: Best fit, no question. I am in a great situation right now with some awesome coaches. It is a great environment and I feel I have a responsibility to always be at my best. It would be hard to leave for a job where I wouldn’t be sure I was getting the same thing. #hogfbchat
A1) just went through this last year. Culture/personalities of staff was top priority (hard working year-round when staff doesn’t mesh). Opportunity to grow in a larger roll was next. Flexibility with my full-time job rounded out the top. #hogfbchat
Q1 As a young coach I look for best fit. Finding an opportunity where I can learn and grow with the coaches around me and be given an opportunity to do so. #hogfbchat
Reasonable point, but I guess over the years I've learned my own happiness/sanity is more valuable to me than just taking whatever is available. Too much of an investment not to be comfortable with the situation #hogfbchat
A1) Look for a challenge and how the job will help my overall growth on and off the field. Scheme and Best Fit may lead to being too comfortable. Getting out your comfort zone always creates the best growth due to the challenge. #hogfbchat
A1: I look at the feel I get when I walk into a building. I typically come in prior to my meeting and sit in the main office and watch the interactions of the administration and the kids. If they feel on edge walking past the admin wing it's usually a bad sign. #hogfbchat
A1: Stay true to your self as a Coach if HFC find the right community, if AFC what are your goals will determine what your looking for in jobs. #hogfbchat
A1 best fit for family, I can adjust to anything we coach a simple game better make sure they are happy first and be willing to do whatever is asked #hogfbchat
A1. Not looking. Hope I’m in the same place in 25 years in the same classroom using the same tackling dummies. But I think best fit is a must. Do they put a premium on the same things you do? Do your values match? If they don’t it will be a short stay. #hogfbchat
Absolutely Coach. And my wife will kill me if I bring that crap home being pissed off at the staff. I get frustrated at myself enough when the kids struggle. I don’t need to be frustrated with those around me too. #hogfbchat
A2 being sound technique wise can he teach technique to meet what we want to do scheme wise. Also have to have a little swagger to them and be able to motivate the most important position on the field #hogfbchat
A1: i haven’t left where i started yet but when i do i believe that i will look for location first. Then find the coaches that i fit in best with. I think for is important. I believe in the end football is football and I embrace the challenge to learn a new scheme. #hogfbchat
A1:early on dont be afraid to step out of yours or someone elses comfort zone.Took my 2nd job at a place no one had nothing but bad things to say about and it was one of my greatest experiences in coaching. Learned more from those kids than I ever did in any class #Hogfbchat
A2: I am an OL coach. But for the lower level dudes I need someone that will buy into my technique and my philosophy. And if they can’t quote movies, it’s just not going to work out. #hogfbchat
Seems to me fans embrace "old school" football when thetes great success and complain it's outdated and get into the #$/+!&*# 21st century when there's only moderate success. Slso seems like evetyone plays Madden and therefore potentially knows more than the coach. #hogfbchat
A2: in no particular order I would say being able to communicate with players and coaches, knowledgeable, problem solver, good under pressure #hogfbchat
A1 how supportive is Administration? What type of staff is already in place? What has contributed to or diminished success in the past? And is that factor changing. Has the weight lifting program been underutilized or mismanaged?#hogfbchat
a2 #hogfbchat Never hired anyone, but if I was hiring an OL coach ~ he needs both a passion for & understanding of the position. It's too important of a position for just anyone to do. So many fine details that separate OLs that are good & those that suck
A2: Never hired anyone but as an OL coach I try to be focused on fundamentals and intensity up front in all grades. I think we as OL coaches should have a natural energy and grit to push our kids to go to war play in and play out at the hardest positions on the field. #hogfbchat
A2: ability to teach in individuals. OL play has the most TEACHING going on. playing OL is Not a natural thing to. Reverse engineer a complex scheme, into individual assignments, individual skills, drill those individual skills. Show they can teach a progression #hogfbchat
A2: OL coaches are a different breed. Gotta be tough skinned (always get blamed) gotta have a heart for your hogs, watch and see how willing they are to work behind the scenes and make those odd jobs their own...also gotta be just a wee bit cocky..#hogfbchat
A1: my philosophy has been somewhere between "Beggars can't be choosers" (aka fight entitlement) and "Fools rush in" (aka fit & circumstances matters). I'm grateful I've worked w/ great coaches at 2 dif. schools in past 10yrs AND to be growing as a culture-shaper, too. #hogfbchat
A2: Biggest thing with any assistant coach is are they a good person, on and off the field. Are they trustworthy. Will the kids buy in to what they’re teaching. Do they have a passion for what they’re coaching. And can they coach kids up. #hogfbchat
A2. I want someone at any position who can connect with the kids and teach them the game the way they would want to be taught. I tell guys to think about who made their football experience enjoyable and pay that forward. #hogfbchat
A2 Is he serious. Is there evidence that he is really all in as a coach? I have met lots of coaches who treat this as a hobby instead of an all consuming passion. I want someone who lives breaths and sleeps this game. Everything else I can figure out and so will he. #hogfbchat
A2: When the time comes for me to be a head coach, I want someone who I can trust. Someone who has the same vision for the Line as I do. A coach I don't have to worry about. #hogfbchat
A2- Passion for the position and can he/she be relatable to the kids. OL coaches are a different breed. Have to make a under-appreciated group the most important group in their minds. Because very few others will. #hogfbchat
A2. Can’t have a pretty OL coach. Has to be able to grow his own garden. Enjoy going to the trash transfer station. Likes to lift heavy things and consume a lot of beverages. Must be A+ on the grill.... that’s what HC look for right? #hogfbchat
A2: I’ve never been in the position before, but if I were too, experience would be nice and most importantly does he know his stuff, because my football teams success will be based on the 5 guys up front #hogfbchat
A2: first thing is you have to think about if you had a son, would you want him playing for this them. OL in particular because those units are so tight. After that, want someone who is willing to learn and grow as I am and other OL coaches who are much better than me #hogfbchat
Q2- My selling point was an incredible energy and true sense of fun. Intentionally make a “boring” position group the coolest one on the team 😎 #hogfbchat
Understanding that the OL is the culture position. If you're not going to go the extra mile to spend time with that group in the weight room, film room, and out on the field... Peace. #hogfbchat
A2: I’ve never hired one, but I’d look for intelligence, work ethic, and obvious knowledge of the position. Also would put much weight on their tenacity. #hogfbchat
Part 2: Are they able to relate to the kids? This one is probably the most important since every OL group I’ve been a part of is a VERY different blend of kids. #hogfbchat
A2- I just hired a guy that is experienced and loyal. He fits the my O lines personality. They are going to like him. He has to be able to communicate technique well also, the little things.
#hogfbchat
A2) NEVER TRUST A SKINNY OL COACH! Just kidding, if he coaches with passion and the hog mentality I would be willing to bet he could can get the job done with the guys up front. (Coming from guy that is getting hired not doing hiring) #hogfbchat
A2: never hired but I can say from my perspective. Can he coach the fundamentals and can he build relationships. OL is a unique position with the bond thats formed to help create a “unit”. Does he have the personality to get the kids to fight for him #HogFbChat
A2) I want strong character guys on my staff, that are going to be believing and preaching what the foundation of r football program is about! I might b arrogant n thinking this but I feel I can coach up my coaches 2 the scheme I want them 2 be coaching, character 1st! #hogfbchat
A2: #1 for me is the ability to connectwith kids. An extraordinary group needs an extraordinary leader. Follow that with an ability to teach the craft. Then comes a willingness to evolve. All 3 have to be there #Hogfbchat
A2) I'm still learning, and this is more my bro's style @JerodBrown_ however, I think the best thing is an ability to explain and teach. O line concepts are more foreign to students than some other aspects of FB. Need to teach accordingly to all types of learners. #hogfbchat
A2b: If I’m hiring an OL coach, I’m going to be looking for someone I can talk OL play with, and someone that can get the points across to the OL I would be trying to instill as if I’m standing there. An extension of me and the OL culture I want #hogfbchat
A2: I want an OL coach who is going to coach his ass off every day, loves the kids like they're his own, approaches each day with enthusiasm, legitimately loves coaching football. Luckily, every OL coach I've ever worked with has had all of those qualities. Great dudes #hogfbchat
A2: Building and fostering relationships with players. I have had the pleasure of playing for, being mentored, and working with great coaches who where able to motivate groups of guys for one common goal. Knowledge is second to the first. #hogfbchat
A2. Cont. A lot of dudes know football, and every coach should be continuing to perfect their craft, so I can work with the right coach. If they can’t connect with the kids and establish a positive report then I don’t need them. #hogfbchat
Investing in the relationships on my coaching staff is the most critical piece in "connecting" and modelling to team. I've heard it said (and agree) that the coaching staff is the 1st team within the team. #hogfbchat
Q2 Tough to answer considering I have never been in this position. Its also tough thinking once I become a head coach someone else will be looking over the Hogs. I would imagine looking for someone with the same values and pride for coaching Oline. #hogfbchat
A2) What's most important to you winning games or developing young men! If it's developing men, they get to the next characteristic/question #hogfbchat
Lots of characteristics like empathy, enthusiasm, and positivity. But also am looking for a great teacher and technician of o line technique. Oh yeah, a wing t guy. Converts accepted! #hogfbchat
A2: Havent hired one but as an OL Coach you gotta have a borderline psychotic, genuine passion for the position and all it entails. Breathe fire and levitate kids when they bully somebody. I know its 2018 and you cant say bully but between the lines its encouraged #hogfbchat
I'm VERY lucky from the standpoint of my wife coaches (gymnasitcs) so she gets it in terms of putting in hours, frustrations with kids/parents, etc. But still, bringing that home sucks for all #hogfbchat
A2: haven’t interviewed one in years but it would be about humility first and a desire to be purposeful in building the relationships with the OL’s as individuals and as a unit. Then a desire to learn.
Last time I hired an OL Coach: Coach Pede in like 04 or 05
#hogfbchat
I 100% agree with it all. I’m now at the point I’d rather train OLs, get my coaching fix in with the position I love, not deal with bat sh*t crazy parents and spend more time with my family. Got some things working so as for now, yeah, that’s what I’m going to do. #hogfbchat
In reply to
@Coach_Ram8, @dhhs_oline, @CoachBrassard
A2) have not been in a position to hire. I admire our OL coach for his ability to answer any and all questions on the spot for our guys. Can make corrections and adjustments without hesitation. Also has done a great job developing new, young asst. OL coach #hogfbchat
I agree coach. My wife and I dated when I was coaching. So she understands it firsthand. She said it was weird me not coaching. My son said the same. But I won’t do it just to do it. #hogfbchat
A2: I’ve brought on ass’t OL coaches and number one for me has to be a passion for the game, position and teaching. Number two is a lot of patience and number three is a willingness to fill their role. #hogfbchat
A3 Two 4 eyes are always better than two. Also allows you to break practice up and teach and coach techniques that relate to each position rather than having to teach one at a time. @GrizzlyBeard78 I made a great team and one of these days we will get the band back #hogfbchat
A3: lot to be said for both sides of this one, but I like to have 2. I’ve been the only guy, and I’ve been 1/2. So much easier to see everything with 2 sets of eyes that are with them. Also good to split group work with interior and exterior. #hogfbchat
a3 #hogfbchat Hire 2 for sure! Not so much about interior/exterior, but rather getting the most out of the limited time to work with the kids of their #SKAQ & development each week. Working with @cking43017 this year was stellar! One group on the LB sled, the other doing a drill
A3: I think this is something that would be wildly beneficial to a staff. You guys have 5 players to watch each play, too bad we don’t have 5 eyes! Kudos to all you OL coaches! #hogfbchat
A3: I believe in order to do it right you have to have multiple guys watching the line. Everyone wants to watch the guys with the ball. It takes a talent to watch the guys who block. Gotta keep them accountable to make the team go. #hogfbchat
A3. I like to have two. I enjoyed another coach helping to push me and make me better when I was an O-line coach, and 4 yes are better then 2. #hogfbchat
Everywhere I’ve been there was always 2 or 3 guys that could coach OL. It has definitely helped because you can break into groups and get more work done. Worked well for me and @CoachRmcD60 last year #hogfbchat
A3: I would only hire one. I say that because multiple voices in one room could lead to confusion. As an Oline guy myself, if I’m the head coach I will be very much in collaboration with my oline coach and help him if needed #hogfbchat
As OL coach and OC, I feel like I need to be in control of the OL schemes and techniques, but also need someone else to work with the OL so I can also work with skills during some sessions in practice. #hogfbchat
A3: we are toying with that this upcoming season. Book will be out on it until after season. Hard to watch 5-6 guys all time, I get it. But will be interesting. Always had a second guy that was with TEs before. #hogfbchat
A3) Bring an OL Coach, I personally like being alone and having my hands on all of them so correct in my language, but if there is another coach then we all need to speak the same language. #hogfbchat
A3: I think it all depends on numbers. If there are two people they have to be dialed in and on same page constantly, especially working ZO-CO’s, double teams, and BPU with guards and tackles #hogfbchat
A3 - has to be a comfort between 2 coaches. Can’t have guys who constantly contradict each other. At a small school I think it’s better to have just one OL, bigger schools need two, but I dont like INT and EXT because what if a Tackle has to play inside due to injury? #hogfbchat
A3: I mean, I dunno man. Sure there are probably benefits to an INT/EXT combo of line coaches but I really feel like the kids need less voices in their heads. One is enough. #hogfbchat
A3: 2 coaches. An OL coach/run co-ordinator and an Ass’t OL (drill coach/apprentice). Grow the position, plus if you have numbers it’s hard to give kids the 1-1 they may need to “get” something. #hogfbchat
A3: well, we currently have 3.. And it's an invaluable resource. 5 guys on the field at all times...we miss things. It's a fact. But more eyes helps us as a unit get better. #hogfbchat
Yep. She's been supporting me for years as a coach. When I jumped in the stands & hugged her after we won the state in '02 I held her close & cried. She knew how much it meant :-)#hogfbchat
A3) we're a small school so 1 is really all you get. But I think having 2 guys on staff well versed in the principles and terms allows for support when needed. #hogfbchat
A3: I’d hire 2 so I have extra eyes during the game. I work all 5 positions together because I expect all of my guys to know and play every position. This includes technique, so both coaches will work together. #hogfbchat
A3) from my experience, two are great. I’ve only been in programs where one deals with the varsity guys and other deals with younger guys. Intrigued by interior vs exterior coaches #hogfbchat
A3. Cont. I am stoked to currently have two line coaches. One is a stipend position, and the other is young kid in college who volunteers. At some point I would love to have an IOL and T/TE Coach. #hogfbchat
A3. Two, no question. Too many kids to keep eyes on for just one guy. Have done interior/exterior before, but think having both guys work with all the kids tends to have more benefit. #hogfbchat
A2: to the #1 characteristic is Coachability & Relationship Building (see what I did there?) Got to be able to take & receive input, since most important input & feedback is from & for the OL. And need to build cohesion & brotherhood in OL unit as foundation 4 all else #hogfbchat
A3: is hire 10 if I could!
2 is great, I liked watching C/LG/LT and having 2nd watch RG/RT. I think that Left/Right split is better than trying to have one guy watch both tackles and coach on the fly
#hogfbchat
A3. We've had three guys working OL the last few years. The more the merrier, as long as there is a well established chain of command. Usually have the most guys to coach during indy and need all the eyes you can get on the OL
#hogfbchat
2 OL working together would be great. Being able to split up interior and exterior is great. But at HS level I understand that is a luxury many do not have. #hogfbchat
Awesome feeling coach! I remember standing on the field with my wife and son after our last state title and being overcome with emotion. We all were. They all knew how much we ALL put into it. #hogfbchat
A3 (cont) - if I had my way, I’d have a 9-10 and 11-12 OL if I had two. That way they are taught the same terminology, but can learn different styles and become better rounded. But that guys have to be willing to do it. Not easy to do, but it’s how I would want it #hogfbchat
A3: Depends on how well they mesh. Two coaches who are on the same page is better than one, but any sort of difference in terminology or teaching will cause confusion, which will kill you up front. I would lean toward one with an assistant to guarantee a clear message. #hogfbchat
OL coach and our motto is “lock the gate” and it comes from Hugh Freeze’s pregame speech before they beat Bama “we know they’re well coached, good players they’re a good team. Let’s lock the gate and go looking for a fight and see what they got” (not exact quote) #HOGFBCHAT
A3) Always love having 2 coaches. More individual attention the better. QB/RB/WR coach typically has 1:3 /1:5 ratio of coaches to players. Makes sense for OL to have it as well #hogfbchat
A3: Two can be awesome as long as they’re both on the same page and teaching and communicating together. Lots to watch and an extra set of eyes can’t be a bad thing! #hogfbchat
A3: As for myself I am Assistant oline coach. The head oline coach handles all varsity and I help him when needed. I like it because i get to learn how from a vet. But I get tobe the guy for frosh and JV oline coach which has my name on it. #hogfbchat
All you young guys 🚨🚨 there are two types of jobs ones your being fired from and ones you will be fired from, being a head coach is hard an has a low life expectancy #hogfbchat
A2 Physically dominating another human being is the hardest job on the football field. To get 5 kids to work together & love what they do is an even harder job. Whoever is hired has to love the game & love that position even more & Be able to earn respect from the kids #hogfbchat
A3. I’ve been on staffs where we had two coaches and others where it was just myself, both have their own pros and cons. Two coaches cut down on wasted time but need to be in the same page. One coach allows for total unity but can only coach so many kids at one time #hogfbchat
A3: Yes sir, we had two when I was in school. Centers and guards with one, tackles and TE the other. We went playside and backside two years ago and it was a fun ride. Then he went back to the dark side. #hogfbchat
A3) as OL/OC I would love another OL that I trust so I could better oversee the whole offense at practice. But can't fathom having that resource at my size school. #hogfbchat
A3: the guy I work under has 17 years of coaching oline experience. So I litterly get to learn from a great coach. This is my first season as an actual coach so I’m just trying to learn and add more to my tool box #hogfbchat
Definitely a keeper coach. Can’t do it without support. My family are my biggest support system and my biggest critics. Wouldn’t have it any other way. #hogfbchat
In reply to
@Warhogs56, @CoachBrassard, @dhhs_oline
A3: it depends on the numbers. I would prefer one, but there is only so much you can do with one set of eyes if you have a lot of kids. Both coaches have to be on the same page though. #HOGFBCHAT
Super late! Was busy grilling up some chicken and making cauliflower rice since my wife informed me that I am fat and she would also like to be skinnier. Jake Wertz, OL/TE, Hays high school, Buda TX #hogfbchat
A4 biggest thing is be confident in your teaching show them also you care outside of football ask about school grades other interests will help build that bond #hogfbchat
A4: 1.lift/run/sweat with the big guys 2.feed them and just talk 3. Develop your own in jokes that the rest of the team just doesn't get....yet tries to copy .. #hogfbchat
A4: I don’t know what it is with me, but I have always had a good connection with the OL coach at whatever school I have been at and looked to them as a mentor, they protect my QBs! Nothing but love to them! #hogfbchat
Q4: Have a “family dinner” with the group. Introduce ourselves and outline the expectations. Re-iterate that as a coach I will be there for them and I will have there back. What happens in the oline room STAYS in the oline room #hogfbchat
A1: looking for best fit, if you can coach you can coach. I can adapt to scheme. But the fit has to be there, with the kids, the HC and the other dudes in the office. A fractured staff if NOT bueno #hogfbchat
A4: first thing you have to do with the OL is let them know 2 things.
1. You care about them and their success.
2. The standard for work ethic is non wavering and expected everyday for every player.
This puts everyone on the same level #hogfbchat
A4: If it’s early in the off-season I’ll actually lift with the guys. I will make the linemen lift with the linemen and I’ll work in. If it’s later in, towards camp, I try to get them to stay after and we Toss the ball around and get to know each other. #hogfbchat
A3: Two. OL already must know about shared glory, so inherent in good OL coaches. Having two coaches only strengthens the unit/pack mentality, and helps w/ skills development, having more eyes to evaluate & assess. Harder to feed would be only drawback #priceyoupay#hogfbchat
A4: Done multiple things to bond with them.Buffett dinner, fat man football, extra lift sessions and lift with them, even have a Bible Study.Being able to relate and gain their trust is huge. They must know we ride together we die together, family even after they graduate #hogfbchat
A4: Easy. Buy the boys pizza. Hang out, get to know them. Don't put on a front, the kids will see right through it. If you feed them and hang out while just being yourself you'll earn their trust way faster than being bill bad ass and yelling about nonsense. #hogfbchat
a4 #hogfbchat show that you support them, but also get to know them...whether it's going to their winter/spring events, going for wings together, etc. Real easy for OL guys to bond over good food
A4. I’d want to have a meeting with them. Explain who I am. Where I came from. How I coach. Want to get to know them more as a person than a player. Once they see that then they’ll trust you. #hogfbchat
A4. I wanted to meet the kids so we could establish a solid report. That way they know they can trust that I will do everything I can to help them achieve their goals. #hogfbchat
A4: Get to know the kids. Build the relationships. I watched a ton of old film so I could come in and fix things they were doing poorly right away to gain trust and show that I was all in #HOGFBCHAT
A4: Group meeting first. Usually food involved. Then individual meetings. One on one. Learn their names IMMEDIATELY. And call them by their names. Nicknames are awesome too. And always lead by example. I won’t ask them to do anything I wouldn’t do myself. #hogfbchat
Get them together and explain what your goals are and have them understand you’re there to be their biggest supporter and set what your expectations are for practice, games, film, etc... #hogfbchat
A4: In the past I've had the unit over for a pasta dinner, that got expensive lol. Now I usually have meetings weekly and allow the guys to ask questions about anything they may want to know about me. I try to be as transparent as possible. #hogfbchat
A4: Tell them that I don't know who my biological father is. Show them that there is someone who has grown up with the same situation that some of them know. This builds trust. #hogfbchat
A4: enforce the idea that we are on the most important group on the field. Just like other families our oline family will have its downs and in order to get through them, we will need to lean on each other and fight through it #hogfbchat
A2: well I’ve never hired an OL coach but I’d probably say the things I’d look for most in a good OL guy are, detail oriented, understands various techniques and can implement them, will they be a good fit with the kids I have. Scheme will come. #hogfbchat
A4: when first came over to new spot, showed passion for position in Meetings and at practice. Didn’t let other coaches or players “cut” on the OL. Established OL dinners and used “point drill” to tell some bad jokes once in a while. #hogfbchat
A4: I wanna meet with them as a unit and talk. Share some stories. What do they love about football, what do they hate, what do they love about OL, spend time getting them to believe in and love each other. Also, take them to dinner or lunch or some kind of food
#hogfbchat
A4) Love to have the team over for a little fellowship & FOOD. Its important to just learn about them and what things they are passionate about, they need to know they are more than a football player to me! #hogfbchat
A4) Get them to bond over being big guys. I call my skill players "pretty boy" because they love to look the part. Linemen don't need to look any type of way, just be willing to communicate and outwork the other front. Have your linemen find comfort in being a unit #hogfbchat
Teams are/should be a family. An o. line is an elite brotherhood within that. The o. line coach has to work build that o.l. comradarie. An o. line pride mentality that includes the big hogs and the little piglets is an important 1st step #hogfbchat
A4 support them and show them very early how much you care about them. Meet with them as a group and individually and make sure everyone is working towards the same goal #hogfbchat
A3: 2 however, i don’t think i would split the line often. Working together as 5 is important. The great part of this is having more eyes in the sky. I run into the issue of the guys in the booth not understanding line play would be great to have an OL guy up there. #hogfbchat
A4) I have always held a meeting with just OL to get to know each other and begin establishing my culture for the OL. I still have that meeting every spring to continue that connection. I'm meeting with them next week. #hogfbchat
A4) Let them know that they are the most important people on the team, treat them like they are the most important people on the team, and feed them like they are the most important people on the team. #hogfbchat
A4. Anything to start building the relationships with them, dinner, pool party, anything to show them that you care outside of football. As far as football goes, show them you know what you’re talking about and that OL means everything to you. #hogfbchat
A4 - Have to feed them! I grilled and had my wife make cookies. I make shirts that have a catchy phrase that I am psycho about only selling to only OL and their families. I want those guys to know I have their back 100%...god or bad until they pass...or I do. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A4 invest time with them. Create shared memories, find ways to help them build trust in you. Respect, empathize, and listen to them. "Treat your men as you would your own beloved sons, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys." -Sun Tzu
A4) knockout what we both believe in with what I am teaching QBs with what he was teaching the guys upfront. Figure out where we may see things differently and come to an agreement on what is best for our guys. Not everyone likes hot sauce on their eggs! #hogfbchat
A4: I like what Coach MacPherson (@Coachmac8740) said on @CoachMckieJr’s podcast: Coach to your personality.
Big guys smell fear and frauds. #hogfbchat
In reply to
@CoachShiffman, @Coachmac8740, @CoachMckieJr
A4 Part 2. I’m reading @Brett_Ledbetter ‘s What Drives Winning. Has a lot of really good stuff in there about building trust and other things in a team. Talks about how the person is greater than the player. #hogfbchat
A4 real. all seriousness, if I’m not your position coach I’m still your coach. I’ll build the same relationship with the OL as I do with my skills guys. #HogFBChat
#hogfbchat A4: I think every year is like a new job. Our turnover is every 2yrs, so each OL is 'new'. I try to ID leaders or potential leaders and empower them and encourage them to take charge. We want leaders to be encouragers! Held and hold others accountable, but encouraging.
A4 make them toe the line from jump street, sit up in meetings, eye contact, yes sir/no sir, effort, practice attire set the ground work of expectations, rewards are direct reflection of meeting expectations #hogfbchat
A4: have to immediately begin building. Relationships. Preferably before things get tough. Spend time with them, learn their stories, invest in their lives outside of football. #HOGFBCHAT
A4 - (cont) One thing I have done is once a month I plan a night out with all of the kids that have graduated that played OL for me. It’s helps keep them interested in the program and I get to keep in touch with the life blood of any program #hogfbchat
A4) As OC the OL needs to know you have their back and believe that they are the backbone and cornerstone of what you’re trying to do. Having our QBs develop unique relationships with each guy is a priority #hogfbchat
Coaches, that’s a wrap! Fastest hour on twitter! #AllGasNoBrakes Thanks for participating tonight on the #hogfbchat and hopefully you were able to take something out of it!
A4: A (eating food) event to (eat food) bond the group & (eat food) share (with food) vision & values, and where (food plentiful) you can praise kids and (eat food) start the process of (eating lots of food) building a brotherhood (around eating good food) #hogfbchat
Great talk tonight coaches! Would love to add everyone to daily chats If interested. Download telegram chat app and DM for info/links on joining....football talk anytime anywhere with a lot of the great coaches involved tonight!! #hogfbchat#HSFBCoaches
A4: Meet with just the OL and put out my expectations and make my intentions clear. Also use this time to learn about the kids on a personal level in some way let them know day one that they are my guys on and off the field. #hogfbchat
A3: I’d much rather have two, two sets of eyes better then one. At least have two guys on the offense who are OL competent. Can be even more important if you have schemes where you flip your line or if you introduce a Y or H into the blocking scheme frequently. #hogfbchat
Guys, hope to see some of y’all at Clemson’s clinic next week. Gonna be a great time. If anybody ever wants to talk ball, give me a shout 👍🏻 #hogfbchat

A4: Going forward I will have them all meet me @IHOP I will tell them this time is on you, the next time is on me. For every 5 pancakes you get in a game we will purchase 1 pancake for you at the end of the season with a running tally. Also we get sponsors for it. #hogfbchat
Far out dinner just about done after nice day on river! Thanks for having me guys, I do not get to participate often in this chat #hogfbchat it has been fun!
A4: Get to know the guys, build a relationship. Always be honest and open with them, good and bad. These kids have too many friends these days, be the mentor they need. They’ll love you even more for it. Oh yeah and... food helps. #hogfbchat
