Marcie Faust. Director for Innovative Learning for DPS109. Tweeting from Highland Park tonight while watching the .
-
Looks like we may have quite a bit of competition from the tonight at So hop on as you're able
-
Welcome Liz, glad you could join us tonight!
-
Let's get started with Q1
-
Q1 Do modern learners really NEED changes to current learning environments? Why/why not?
-
Hello Marci, I am a fan of DPS109 innovation & transparency. Welcome!
-
I see we have a lot in common! :)
-
Dr. Dea here from Western Illinois. Emeritus educator & national consultant. More importantly tonight, fan!!
-
Robert here from Los Angeles. Middle school English.
-
Hi ! Joe, Supt from WI. Had a few minutes so thought I'd jump in! Hope all is well!!
-
A1 Would you want a tooth extracted by a dentist using 19th century methods & tools? Schools should mirror modern culture & values
-
The physical space needs to be less like school and more like life. Ss need experiences, content, and interpersonal skills
-
Wow - perhaps you will win tonight's long distance tweet award! Welcome Robert!
-
-
A1: depends on context. Worked w/Ts in rural district connected as a Chicago high $$ suburb school. Others, need updating!
-
., carpools & a little this Monday night! Kathy (principal & team member) here from Oswego.

., carpools & a little this Monday night! Kathy (principal & team member) here from Oswego.
-
Hi, Liz here! I'm the technology coach at Bannockburn School and an aspiring leader, currently in the UofI principal program.
-
A1 YES. If we do not change the environment, modern Ss will power down from 8:00-3:00 and lose precious learning opportunities.
-
A1: Yep. They would be fine in traditional spaces, but fine isn't what we are looking for. Give students a space that fits them.
-
Thanks Joe! Our friends up north are always welcome here at https://t.co/CNYlBXf038
-
-
Hi ! Joe, Supt from WI. Had a few minutes so thought I'd jump in! Hope all is well!!
-
A1 What all kids need is is an enviro of leadership, love, laughter, & learning- equally, all the time, & from teachers & parents.
-
A1 The physical space needs to be less like school and more like life. Ss need experiences, content, and interpersonal skills
-
-
Ok, so there's some thoughts about change, now let's talk specifics
-
Q2 What are the hallmarks of an optimal modern learning environment?
-
A1) yes and no. Tech is good but nature and exercise and reading novels and connecting with peers are timeless. Balance is key.
-
A1 the physical space needs to be flexible and allow Ss the option to be mobile, including their technology!
-
A1.1 I don't know who to credit this quote, "If we teach today's Ss like yesterday's, we rob them of tomorrow."
-
A2) hallmarks of optimal learning environment? One side does not fit all.
-
I dont think that change always means more tech... Lots of great things come from just new experiences.
-
A2: One that is shaped by the expectations for learning.
-
A2 I strive to cultivate a classroom filled w/ willingness, wisdom, wonder, & worth. Inclusive, attentive, inspiring, enlightening
-
A1 I ask my children to evaluate wants vs needs often. Our students NEED a much different environment than "speak when spoken to"
-
A2: Endless. As long as the space reflects those who use it. Choice@is a key component.
-
No doubt. Even the most "hands on" practical professions demand tech skills of the 21st century.
-
-
A2 Collaborative, flexible, and hands on experiences ready and accessed.
-
Agreed. We tend to mistake compliance for engagement too often. Not even close to the same thing.
-
A2 Modern learners need opportunities to connect & learn from each other.
-
A2 collaboration, individualized, impactful, and worldly (not to set the bar too high! 😬)
-
Q1: To answer this, one needs consider the Ss and their learning needs & goals. Some environments need change & some an overhaul.
-
-
A2: Modern learning environments support ranges of experiences, and should not favor one experience over another.
-
A2 Flexibility, choice, and access to tech, info, and other humans. GO CUBS!
-
Jumping in a bit late to ! Distracted by baseball.
-
Agreed! At least until someone designs pedagogy in hand held form. :)
-
The values & environment you espouse & nurture are timeless; too often ignored by some Ts in 2day and in yesteryear
-
No worries, it seems like we all are! Welcome to / Chat
-
A1: to answer this, consider the Ss. Some environments will need change and others, a complete overhaul.
-
Ok, so to empower teachers to own their learning environment....here comes Q3
-
Q3 What SMALL changes can you make to your classroom to accommodate modern learners?
-
Thank you, Dea. Your words humble me. https://t.co/j22PttZyqt
-
-
The values & environment you espouse & nurture are timeless; too often ignored by some Ts in 2day and in yesteryear
-
I am cramming several hours of screen time into 120 minutes!
-
Be willing to learn from students! There are so many Ts in the room! https://t.co/DNDC7Yf2kd
-
-
Q3 What SMALL changes can you make to your classroom to accommodate modern learners?
-
A3 Do modern learners really want to sit in rows?
-
-
A3: Give them choice in the current environment as see where they gravitate.
-
A2: personalized learning, choice, meaningful and authentic experiences, collaboration, access to technology...
-
-
A3 rethink an over abundance of worksheets
-
-
A3 Let go... Give the students the reigns for a change. With guidance the growth is AMAZING
-
-
-
Great answer! The line between teacher / student is becoming blurred, and rightfully so!
-
A3: Take time to listen and observe. Doing so, you'll learn what your modern learners need from you!
-
Where do people get to practice decision-making? School seems like a good place to me!
-
A3 the Tt needs to step back (sometimes) & act more as a facilitator & allow Ss to take ownership of their own learning!
-
You mean that you shouldnt be perfect in everything you do in school??? How will the Ss earn As then? hehe
-
-
A1Last yr. my students created their learning spaces. They needed flexibility & different areas for learning tasks. They owned it.
-
Joining late. Working of teacher evals. Yes, the season has started!
-
Ok, time to think bigger....here comes Q4
-
-
Glad you could join us - it's been an exciting night, and a fun chat!
-
Q4 What BIG changes should schools/districts budget for in order to accommodate modern learners?
-
A3 My classroom consist of Ts & Ss. I have decided to embed PD in my weekly staff emails & my next goal is to flip my staff mtgs.
-
Sorry late tonight to Hello everyone!
-
Welcome Meg, we were missing you!
-
-
Thanks, I love finishing up an introduction to one of our books. Crazy good learning! https://t.co/5XgEFYXSlw
-
-
Welcome Meg, we were missing you!
-
Give Ts the power to design the learning space they have in mind for the Ss, give them choice. If you involve Ss even better
-
One of my posts from last year that seems to have some lasting traction, "The Modern Learner"; https://t.co/QRinRWLha0
-
Working on getting my students to identify & reflect on their needs. I want them to share those needs with me.
-
A3&4 Big or small, if schools, teachers & parents do not honor the whole child, all other measures won't add up to much.
-
A4: Reframe the concept of the "school day." Community/Service-based learning. Creation of educational incubators in schools
-
Designing flexible spaces around your desired student outcomes allows for growth and development alongside changing curriculum.
-
A4 collaborative spaces!! Get rid of desks - teacher & student. Provide certified staff in areas of technology & innovation.
-
A4 Not sexy, but infrastructure is essential to learning in a modern, web-connected world.
-
It is so important to think about spaces for teaching and learning in new spaces https://t.co/bJ9JN4p21M
-
-
A4 collaborative spaces!! Get rid of desks - teacher & student. Provide certified staff in areas of technology & innovation.
-
Whole-child focus equally values & develops Ss' social, emotional, soulful, & academic growth. All 4 inextricably intertwined.
-
Stop spending big $$ on building traditional school environments. Why talk of modern needs & build traditional school.
-
Good Ts life-long learners. If Ss knew what & how 2learn, no need 4Ts. Ts bait learning; Ss take the hook
-
A4 let's be real though...not a district problem - it's a state problem
-
Agreed! it is more fun to look at furniture, but we must have a good infrastructure! https://t.co/xc9O5JUN0Q
-
-
A4 Not sexy, but infrastructure is essential to learning in a modern, web-connected world.
-
So much could be accomplished with this type of program!
-
A4 technology coaches and up to date hardware/software to amplify learning and engage learners
-
A4: Provide teacher learning on educating the whole child- what looks, sounds, and feels like.
-
-
Not cool to have limited bandwidth when trying to go 1:1.
-
A4 Budget for tech enhancements, new program experiments and updates to current spaces/furniture.
-
My answer parallels yours, invest in infrastructure that can support new conditions for a new experience.
-
A4 the need for collaborative learning spaces, not your typical library, but learning space. Flexible seating in the classrooms
-
-
Q4 RT What BIG changes should schools/districts budget for in order to accommodate modern learners? https://t.co/OGgvesWeGm
-
Locally, we struggle with keeping our existing structures viable. Building new Schools not in the picture!
-
Exactly what I just stated! Great minds... https://t.co/2uHqLxlJmO
-
-
A4: Provide teacher learning on educating the whole child- what looks, sounds, and feels like.
-
A4: Stop with the bell to bell schedule. Learning should be fluid.
-
A4 Thanks Districts will need to staff the IT department like they do the classroom.
-
-
Totally with you here! Learning isn't a schedule thing.
-
Q5 Should classrooms mirror the workplace? How can we accomplish this?
-
A4: I so agree! Bell to bell learning needs to change! https://t.co/OAKILaLDYN
-
-

-
-
Q5 Should classrooms mirror the workplace? How can we accomplish this?
-
A5 Hard to predict what future work spaces will look like. But, I do think Ts need to consider digital learning spaces too.
-
Q5 depends on the workplace - cubicles?! 😩
-
I hear a lot of fluidity & flexibility, which are great, but all kids benefit from structure, stability & security too. Leadership
-
A5 Just shared an article with a T about this very thing. I think it's worth a try. Have no idea how to make it a reality.
-
-
A5 Emulate the workplace. Learn the processes and approaches that professionals use in that area
-
It's not easy this day in age. Upgrading even the tech is BIG money.
-
In my last building, we had this flexibility. Not finding that this year. Everything is scheduled for teachers. :(
-
A5: How might schools and bus/industry partner to create learning connections and build off each other's strengths?
-
A5: Maybe not mirror the environment, rather provide rich opportunities to integrate the necessary skills.
-
Stay in tune w/professional experts. What are their recommendations?
-
Maybe if it was more like Facebook or Google?
-
Yes, I see phenomenal schools in suburbs. Creates "us and them" issue for Illinois teachers & Illinois students.
-
A5 For at least elementary & MS, let kids be kids. It's a learning place-not a workplace. Allow curiosity, creativity &exploration
-
A5 Depends on the workplace! Would love to mirror 's work. Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose to motivate our students.
-
A5: Look at workplace strategy research, bus/ind greatly reducing footprint as workers (or learners) become more mobile. Schools?
-
Nice, same goes for secondary IMO
-
Great opps for blended environments and learning https://t.co/bTDQC2bx4P

-
Places fall into place when Ss & Ts have heaping helpings of these!
-
Yes, exactly. Much opportunity here to do some really interesting things. Should be a major focus, IMO.
-
A5. Will definitely need to educate Ps. To move from the traditional setup would send some into shock!
-
We have committees of local manufacturing and engineering groups for this very reason! Guide our process
-
At BG we are creating enviros to support informal learning and blended too https://t.co/zP1Xyf1CyV
-
-
Yes, exactly. Much opportunity here to do some really interesting things. Should be a major focus, IMO.
-
Q6 What are the differences between preK-8 and 9-12 modern learning environments?
-
I agree, but if students are engaged and excited about schools I think Ps would join the change! https://t.co/2uPT5oSXST
-
-
A5. Will definitely need to educate Ps. To move from the traditional setup would send some into shock!
-
Future isn't quite so mysterious for your students. It's the right way!
-
-
The blend of formal to informal opportunities and analog to digital opps is pretty compelling.
-
Love the book "The Third Teacher", highlighting the importance of designing innovative educational environments!
-
A6 Embraced more at the middle grades. K-4 say to young & HS can't see how it would prepare kids for college.
-
A6 prek-8 from observation is easier 2 have flexible classrooms whereas 9-12 is always in a more formal setting
-
Blended learning combines online, digital, asynchronous experiences w/F2F teacher/classroom type learning
-
A6: From my perspective, it seems elementary Ts "feel" they can adapt their environments more so than secondary Ts.
-
The majority of our lives is spent engaged in informal learning. 3/4 of us admit 2 being lifelong learners
-
A6 PreK-8 all about experiences. Learn and play. 9-12 experiences that tie to futures and opportunities
-
Looking this up now! https://t.co/iUIBt3d0rT

A6: From my perspective, it seems elementary Ts "feel" they can adapt their environments more so than secondary Ts.
-
A5: When still in the classroom, I arranged onsite learning experiences 4my Ss in their interest area. Lots of work. Loved it!
-
Lots of work, but critical for Ss future success! You over it and so did your Ss! https://t.co/M3rnjdNq5x

-
Q7 What CURRICULAR/PEDAGOGICAL changes would best accommodate modern learners?
-
This is where we need to include secondary Ss in the planning conversations
-
A6. 1/2 Across a K-12 experience, the qualities of the desired student learning experience should be consistent and inform design.
-
I so agree Bob! Give Ss a chance to explore post HS possibilities https://t.co/aIdrzyH8cN
-
-
This is where we need to include secondary Ss in the planning conversations
-
Wow - this is a whole chat / workshop in itself! Great question!
-
A7 I believe it would require us to embrace self paced and self directed learning.
-
A6 I see K-8 teachers creating environments to support pedagogy. Not sure if that is the case in 9-12.
-
A6. 2/2. If so, then it is a matter of right-sizing the env to the age group, so that you can see what you value in all spaces.
-
I agree, I think Ss would thrive, but what is holding us back? https://t.co/ybvgVuB7Pe
-
-
A7 I believe it would require us to embrace self paced and self directed learning.
-
We are beginning to: with Entrepreneurship, comp programming, foods, makerspace https://t.co/LpkDQk5rhr

A7 Move away from "the curriculum" and toward hands-on experiences and skills that students will actually need in life.
-
ok, time for one last Q and then we can let eeryone get back to the

I’m doing a lot of research around this now, looking for IL schools ready to try! https://t.co/EzNIywHJ2h

A7 Move away from "the curriculum" and toward hands-on experiences and skills that students will actually need in life.
-
A7: Personalized learning,PBL, individualized instruction, use of tech. More conferring & targeted small group instruction.
-
A6. For example, If you value collaboration, then spaces for kinders to seniors should be designed to support development of skill
-
Totally, Google takes care of a lot of content. Focus on skills & experiences with content as the backdrop.

Q8 What changes will you make/propose tomorrow as a result of tonight’s chat about the needs of modern learners?
-
Let’s do this! Start with a few classrooms and watch the magic spread! I’m ready tomorrow https://t.co/t60fAyTOz9
-
-
A7: Personalized learning,PBL, individualized instruction, use of tech. More conferring & targeted small group instruction.
-
Look who's bringing their A-Game tonight?!? Thanks for being here !
-
A7 Examples Geometry in Construction, Entepreneurship, Design Thinking, PBL, Makerspaces, Product Development and the list goes on
-
Give me a handful of teachers ready to change and let’s get started! I’m ready and we know our Ss are! https://t.co/RAp01gbu9E
-
-
Q8 What changes will you make/propose tomorrow as a result of tonight’s chat about the needs of modern learners?
-
A8 Already proposing a new course for design thinking with Ss in art, engineering, electronics and computer science come together
-
A8: encourage Ts to talk less and listen more. Stress the need to focus on learning rather than teaching.
-
-
A8 I am bringing some performance tasks to my district to model new assessments. Will also be facilitating PBL and 4Cs work.
-
A7: the opportunity to explore design as a pedagogy
