A weekly half hour chat focused on improving access to education for PK-12 students through the use of Accessible Educational Materials (AEM), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Assistive Technology (AT).
Hi everyone! Rachel here from the PATINS Project! There is nothing I love more than great professional development! Excited to chat tonight! #PatinsIcam
A1: I listen to teachers for the blind/low vision throughout the state, and try to keep up with the many tools they need to make a more and more visual world reachable for the blind #PatinsIcam
A1: My role is a bit unique in that while I adore training others, and do, my larger role is ever-restless in facilitating the amazing PATINS Specialists to empower Indiana's LEAs! #PatinsIcam
A1: My role is a very lucky to one to facilitate meaningful and relevant conversations in considerations of access for all students with educators around our state of Indiana #PatinsIcam
Thanks Jessica. At the PD level, instructor is the wrong word. Many of the attendees know so much and I want to bring out the collective knowledge. #PatinsIcam
In education, PD helps T’s and others improve & maintain their professional knowledge, as well as learning new skills. Good pd should guide the learning. #patinsicam
Sort of. We did one last year, but I may be working with my doctoral advisor at the University of Kentucky to create a set of online training modules for UDL. I’m stoked! #patinsicam
A2: Developing Professionally, is fine tuning/honing one's combination of skill, art, and craft. It's on-going, scaffolded, and often just-in-time. #PatinsIcam
A3: Best PD has always been the PD that I sought out and felt pertinent to my prof growth. Being given the opportunity to choose it, modify it and use it has been motivating #PatinsIcam
A2: For me, PD is about shaking things up a bit for educators. As a T, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut. PD’s can help refresh, renew and rejuvenate instruction. It’s also super important to make it about 25% theory and 75% practice! #patinsicam

A3: Paula Kluth ANYTHING! She has so many ideas that I apply immediately and is so incredibly engaging! She really knows how to do it! @PaulaKluth is one to watch! #PatinsIcam

A3: My best PD experiences have always provided info that could be implemented and practiced immediately. They allowed for choice from the PD provider. #patinsicam
I like to try to make several versions of the same PD, depending on my audience (preschool, high school, therapists, teachers) so they can "see themselves" #PatinsIcam
A3: The best PD for me is when the presenters speak it REAL & make meaningful connections so that we all can quickly picture a face of a student & can't wait to implement #PatinsIcam
A3: I attended a 3-hour workshop at a UDL conference last Spring and it was awesome! The instructors, @heathersfrancis and @jen_dee_ (I think), were practicing the UDL they were preaching! Multiple means of engagement, repres., and action/exp. #patinsicam
A4: I think PD has to be multi-leveled and ON-GOING for it to be effective AND I think the tool has to be taught separately from the content in most cases. that's there I focus. #PatinsIcam

A4: when staff tell me "it didn't work" it wasn't usually because they didn't understand all the fancy tool features, it was because they didn't understand WHY they needed it in the first place, that's where the focus needs to be! #PatinsIcam
#PatinsIcam adults need to also have a chance to discuss barriers and how to reduce or solve them. Which could include fears, bias or external challenges
Yes, I've personally found that they quite often include fears that may be disguised as many other things...funding, time, policies, age, etc. #PatinsIcam

Yes and then always take pause & explain why u are offering multiple means during provided PD so that u can model for T who are in the classroom. A big question is always "what does UDL look like?" We can naturally model. #PatinsIcam
#PatinsIcam following sit and get my teams offer ongoing support through web-meetings 1-1 or small group plus online forum spaces for participant ongoing sharing and Q&A
A5: I love using simulations. When Ts can experience a strategy or innovation from a student perspective, it becomes more real! I especially like to do a “what not to do” simulation, then a “what to do” one. They really feel the difference! #patinsicam
Exactly! Then, at the end, I show them a list of exactly how I included UDL in the presentation. That way they feel the importance of the intentionality that embodies UDL. #patinsicam

#PatinsIcam lots of simulations at the https://t.co/bcZlNBMd5y site. People definitely need to experience things to more fully begin to understand a new perspective, gain some empathy

A7: No one has thrown tomatoes at me. HA! I love our end survey...lots of good information there. Personally I also judge by how many people reach out after the PD to get "more." #PatinsIcam
A6: Simulations, TIPS (think, ink-write it down, pair, share), modify an existing lesson and share, silent conversations (all participants have a marker and respond to each other silently by writing on a giant chart paper) #patinsicam
A7: From a perspective of a provider of PD, if you are contacted afterward in some way for further support or resources...u know you've have struck a meaningful chord. It's a simple measuerment, but one nonetheless. #PatinsIcam
A7: This one is tricky! Especially when it’s a one-and-done PD. We can always include exit slips or posts on today’s meet or twitter, but it’s definitely something I want to improve. #patinsicam
A8: I love working with Professional Learning Communities that gather on a regular basis to share ideas and challenges--getting everyone connected to one of these would be great! #PatinsIcam
