Welcome to #BookCampPD - I am Meredith Johnson, moderator and I hope you will all welcome @KymHarjes our guest moderator! She has designed some terrific questions for you about the book, #TheWildCard
Hey #BookCampPD - I'm Alicia, digital learning coach & media coordinator at a STEM magnet middle school in northwest NC.
My why = helping others & inspiring a lifelong love of learning showing Ss in poverty that they can break the cycle.
You have heard of "paying it forward?" @GrayMttrs - Sara Tenan Gray, last week, was one of the winners of 2 books that were given away. During tonight's chat, she would like to "pay it forward" w/ also giving away 2 books!! FABULOUS #BookCampPD Winners announced at end of chat.
Hi everyone- Stacy, ELA Supervisor from NJ. I became an educator because of the phenomenal teachers I had along the way that helped my journey become a successful one #BookCampPD
Hello #bookcamppd! My name is Tika, and I am going to try to chat with 2 amazing chats at the same time (#teachpos). I love the book, Wild Card! I teach 26 fabulous 2nd graders and mentor amazing teachers.
My WHY is that I like helping people learn and like learning with people. That is what makes teaching enjoyable for me. I hope being a consultant can be just as fulfilling as I work with teachers. #BookCampPD
A1. I have observed teachers increasing engagement when teaching the standards by involving movement in the lesson and beginning the day with Morning Meetings. #BookCampPD
Hello, everyone! Sara here checking in from north of Dallas where I teach 6th-8th grade GT ELA. My Why is because teaching is one of the only professions that enables you to share the best part of heart with someone else and have him/her carry it on. ❤️#BookCampPD
A1: I believe in Universal Design of Learning (UDL). I like to adopt the standards and my district's curriculum with engaging and hands-on activities that make Ss think and go outside of their comfort zone (My why is to build confident and kind Ss)! #bookcamppd
A1: I know what needs to be taught, and I have a specifics that need to be covered. But the key is to know that and know your LITTLES. It is based of what they need and how I approach the lesson. The art of teaching and knowing - so important. #bookcampPD
Hi, Mellissa Green here. Disability-inclusion/accessibility supporter book critic author of dark Intergalactic Culinary thrillers and more. Take a nibble! #WonNano#ScripturalPoet This is my pen name. #BookCampPD
A1: Standards are just that, a mark to hit, a destination. The road we travel to get there and the routes we can take to demonstrate understanding is up to us and the learner. Love getting kids to sketch, write music, design items in Sketchup or Punch Home, plus more. #BookCampPD
A1: I’m all about #PBL which brings standards and curriculum to life. It’s really important to bring authentic experiences to the classroom #BookCampPD
A1: When teaching English I try to balance oral, text and multimedia summatives; I also want to balance individual and group tasks. Triangulating evidence across conversations, observations, and products is also essential. I aim for variety and balance. #BookCampPD#engchat
Problem-based learning (as well as inquiry) can be great ways to get students to engage in deep and meaningful learning to them, which is essential for engagement. #bookcamppd
A1: How the unit or learning cycle is introduced and framed is an opportunity to be creative, whether it is establishing a time period, a setting, exploring related issues, making predictions, or sharing prior knowledge on the topic. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A1: Elements of gamification involve creativity and engagement, group students in houses/clans/tribes, create avatars, have levels, solo and group quests, and foster competition. Build in choice and random elements to create interest. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
My biggest support has been my twitter family. I’ve gotten ideas such as Minecraft and ideas from other teachers. My students love coding. So that’s been a huge influencer too. #bookcamppd
I wonder if using those exemplary strategies in teaching students played a part in why you were selected to be in the position you are now? #BookCampPD

A2. My "ace up my sleeve" was a fierce determination to rise to all of the challenges, think creatively to imagine solutions and when placing students' best interests 1st to overcome barriers. #BookCampPD
A2: If a teacher is not passionate about what they’re teaching a student can’t be passionate about what they’re learning. I agree with #TheWildCard; having a good sense of why you teach translates to your students, allowing you to instill purpose in their learning. #BookCampPD
A1: How the unit or learning cycle is introduced and framed is an opportunity to be creative, whether it is establishing a time period, a setting, exploring related issues, making predictions, or sharing prior knowledge on the topic. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A2: My "ace"- I allow Ss to see my vulnerability. Whether I am excited about something that happened or a mentor text makes me sad, I allow Ss to see that & let them know that feelings are okay! I tell Ss "Be the reason someone smiles today." SE learning is critical! #bookcamppd
A1: "Can we really do that?" Those words are music to my ears! I always love to offer learning or assessment activities that make kids wonder if they really have an opportunity to learn this, test that way, speak here, go there, etc. 😎 #BookCampPD
I think having a good foundation in fundamental teaching practices will help you in any type of consulting position in a school board, no matter what the specific portfolio actually is (in my case it is teaching and learning with technology). #bookcamppd
A2: Our "story" is very telling. Too often, Ss look at Ts like we have it all together, and believe that we were terrific as Ss. I'm honest. I screwed up, a lot. I tell them that I am there to help them be better than I was and help them realize their potential. #BookCampPD
A1: I definitely add to the curriculum to make it more interesting - art projects, connections to science/social studies
We did a narrative piece (letter writing) based on a story from our text. Added a health/nutrition spin on it and did a directed drawing activity #BookCampPD
A2: As an English teacher I want to infect students with a love of reading and writing. To do so, I must read and write, ideally in front of my students to encourage them to do the same.. Books can be shared via book talks. Read excerpts of writing out loud in class. #BookCampPD
A2: well I just love engaging with all things pop culture (I’m okay admitting it!) and I found that it was especially useful when working with teens #BookCampPD
A2: I read widely across genres to share with my students. I allow choice in both reading and writing, as well as inquiry, to increase engagement. I share my own interests and allow students to share their own through reading, writing, discussion, and projects. #BookCampPD
A2 I❤️immersing my Ss in everything we are learning. #roomtransformations and purposeful activities are a great way for my kids to always wonder wonder what is going to happen next. #BookCampPD
Thank you so much Sara for offering to "pay it forward" by giving away two books during tonight's chat from the Winter/Spring focus.
Let's hear three cheers for Sara!! #BookCampPD
A2a My ace when I taught 4th grade was I raised in Las Vegas and teaching our city and state's history is exciting for me. I can share how much our city has changed. #bookcamppd
A3: Rigor doesn't mean tests or quizzes, so for the most part, we do not have them. We are also considering alternatives to exams. Rigor means robust assignments directly connected to curriculum expectations with growing complexity and proficiency required over time. #BookCampPD
A3. The chart shares my thoughts about rigor. It is dependent on who I observe doing the work. Highest rigor occurs when the student is the one thinking and doing the work. #BookCampPD
A3: Rigor is different for all Ss. I think rigor includes scaffolding risks and challenging Ss. Some Ss are able to handle more than others, but all Ss can and should have appropriate rigor in my opinion #bookcamppd
agree...read alouds are always incorporated - it's a good way to expose Ss to various genres and series
there are some days where we don't get to a read aloud and my 3rd grade Ss will ask for it (making sure it wont be a common occurance) - kids luv being read to #BookCampPD
Hahahahaha! I love this! My canned response when I tell Ss to push the limits is, "What's the worst they will say? 'No'? We can deal with that." Getting them to understand that someone will say "YES" is essential. #BookCampPD
A3: rigor is pushing students and myself one step past the comfort zone. It’s going the extra mile, or step, to find the treasure that awaits in uncharted territory. #bookcampPD
A3. The graphic below from @TeachThought has excellent ideas about how to add rigor to anything. My favorite is having students take and defend their thinking - much like the debate section of the book pg.201 Saving this graphic may help in the future. #BookCampPD
A3: Rigor doesn't mean that students aren't entitled to choice (in topic, product, and tech. tool). Rigor does not mean students are not entitled to multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning. Rigor is not the enemy of flexibility. We learn at different speeds. #BookCampPD
A3: I really dispise the term "rigor" - However, I do have very high expectations for my littles. Those "very" depending on the level of the S. In my room engagement and interaction with all is the most important to support everyones learning. #bookcampPD
A2: I love to write...I share my writing with my Ss often..its an ACE and a passion...they get to see the vulnerability required when you write from your heart #bookcamppd
A3 Rigor seems to be a hot topic word lately. Pushing students beyond the status quo and bare minimum. Seeing their potential learners & setting the bar high. #BookCampPD
A3: To me, rigor should be that productive struggle. When something is seemingly just out of reach & then the Ss find their own step stool to reach it through determination and perseverance. It's fast paced enough to not be boring, but slow enough to be successful. #BookCampPD
A3. The attached graphic is from https://t.co/5WkP6HcouY which applies Webb's Depth-of-Knowledge levels to Bloom's Cognitive Process Dimensions- ELA moving from DOK 1 to 4. Great examples of rigor. #BookCampPD
A3: Rigor does not mean involve multiple choice questions or justifying bad pedagogical choices based on what is done in college, university, or on standardized tests. Rigor is going deep in a topic or text, and may involve choice of product and use of technology. #BookCampPD
A3: Rigor does not equal lots of work. It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality. Are the students in the pursuit of knowledge in a way that sparks curiousity and critical thinking? Is what they’re doing fostering grit? That to me is rigor. #BookCampPD
We would study famous and infamous Nevadans every year and my students would learn dances of the era of the person they were studying, dressed, shared speeches in the first person. We invited the real people to attend the Famous Nevadan show. It was amazing! #bookcamppd
A2: I guess you could see my ace up my sleeve is my ability to pull a rabbit out of my hat.🐰I'm usually able to assess the classroom & my kiddos to immediately change directions or plans. In fact, I'm think I'm almost better on the fly! #BookCampPD
A4: Conferencing, using surveys, and reading students’ writing helps to learn about a child as an individual so interests can be appealed to, are key in sparking curiosity and encouraging engagement. Find opportunities to build student interests into your classroom. #BookCampPD
A4: I have one S who I incorporated their passion for drawing with their assignments. They see that their talent can be used to guide their thinking and deeper understanding. #bookcamppd
A4 Being teal here. I recently received a fifth grader in my unit. I’m challenging myself to make learning come alive and be relevant and meaningful to him. #BookCampPD
A2: I used to work in a deaf/hard of hearing Pre-K class as an educational aide - learning to sign and use visuals was imperative
this experience helps me currently reach my diverse learners - I use anchor charts, pictures, and movement whenever I can #BookCampPD
A4: making a goal to meet each student where they are at, mentally and emotionally. It’s adapting lessons and differentiation of them that will allow me to reach each student most effectively...and be their game changer! #bookcampPD
A4: Showing what is valued in your classroom communicates volumes to students so consider carefully. Beyond focusing on curriculum expectations, place students and what matters to them at the forefront of what you do and what is seen in your class. #BookCampPD
A4: I have one student in mind. Friday, I learned his new dance, We did it together at the end of the day. This child loves football. I am currently working on a lesson to incorporate a football room transformation and game tied to standards. #BookCampPD
A4: Several Ss come to mind immediately! I will continue to be the one who loves them unconditionally & offers support and encouragement. I offer many opp for success & will continue to do so. #BookCampPD
A4: Using the words of @Stephharvey49@AnnieTWard From Striving to Thriving and working hard right now to relentlessly book match with a reluctant yet striving reader..I know we can get there together!#bookcamppd
A4: One professor in teachers college valued being firm, fair, and flexible with students. Flexibility involves being adaptive to specific students in your class. Be timely. Be responsive. Co-learn with your students instead of teaching each class the same way. #BookCampPD
A4. A great goal would be to find creative ways to always leave them wanting more. I had lunch w/ a group of 6th gr. girls - built strong relationships. Before they would hurry off to class, I left them with a question to ponder, that we would discuss the next time. #BookCampPD
A4: well I’m not in the classroom anymore, but I’d like to think I can be a wild card for the teachers I work with. I think it always boils down to relationships. It’s my priority to continue building them through a listening ear and an empathetic heart #bookcamppd
A4: Credit to @mlarson_nj for this mindset w/a difficult student I'm dealing with: "Make your answer 'Yes, AND' instead of 'Yes, IF'." Sometimes when we put difficult conditionals in front of difficult Ss, the mission stalls. Excited to put this into action on Tues. #bookcampPD
All of the books in our #BookCampPD Winter/Spring focus have been scheduled. Please check out when on our Calendar of Events page. https://t.co/bcIF6eE8r3
Please consider being a Guest Moderator - 4 chat dates still open https://t.co/m8bxVUD42Z
A4: I have a group of girls deeply interested in writing poetry. I keep telling myself I need to enter them in a poetry slam contest. As soon as I can get through my 8th grade mock trial competition, I'm going to do it. Denying them that opportunity would be a shame! #BookCampPD
A4: Started an intervention with 25 2nd graders, for an hour a day. As a pull out small group SPED T this is new for me. One of my high flyers, who really needs me is in my group. I am prepared for what she may hand me, we will both grow this semester. #bookcampPD
The winners of the two books that @GrayMttrs so graciously donated are @Mr_Schellenberg and @MrEggertsClass - please DM me with which of the Winter/Spring focus books you would like - book - address - phone number #BookCampPD

A3: rigor is making learning challenging - moving beyond DOK 1
In 3rd grade much of the curriculum & standards are challenging ... so I really focus on speaking & listening to get my Ss to talk about their learning (explaining, reflecting, and asking questions) #BookCampPD
As we prepare to wind down this fast-paced & inspiring chat...I’ll leave you with these parting words from The Wild Card ♠️ Thank you for stopping in & participating in #bookcamppd
