#MasteryChat is a weekly chat with a growing family of educators from around the word focused on teaching better and reaching more students. Topics cover an array of challenges and solutions for teachers of all grade levels and subject areas, admins, and support staff.
#MasteryChat occurs every Thursday at 8:00pm eastern.
The chat was created by team at @thegridmethod, but is hosted by guest moderators each week. Our primary moderators are @techieteachott, @raehugart, and @jeffgargas.

A1: I wish I had understood that my diploma didn't define my learning. I continue to learn on a daily basis from 8 year old Ss, college level pre-service Ts, parents, community members, #PLN and so many more! @ashlyntucker_ed@Syskakj_edu#MasteryChat#Nan3EDU#edumagic#gccedu
A1 - I believe a lot of new teachers believe they have to be good at everything, or even that that is the expectations of their co-workers.
Keep the most important aspects of teaching #1, and the rest will take care of itself or you'll learn along the way. #masterychat
A1: Differentiation was a hot topic while I was in college. I wish I would have learned more about personalization and how they both differ. #masterychat
Tiffany Ott from NE Ohio. Part of the @teachbetterteam and high school math teacher. SO excited for tonight’s chat!
I am a proud graduate (twice!) of @KentState!
#MasteryChat
A1 I wish that I learned to be OK with making a mistake. Your first year teaching is going to be exciting, fun, hard, all the feels. But it is OK to mess up, it is OK to ask for help. #masterychat#nan3edu#gccedu#edumagic
Hi #masterychat Kris McGee, Associate Prof of Literacy @frostburgstate in Maryland. I teach #preservice teachers and literacy courses. I received my degrees from Towson University, Frostburg State University and West Virginia University.
Hey everyone! It's Catie Stanley studying at GCC! Can't wait to hear everyone's awesome input tonight :) Thanks for joining the chat! #gccedu#masterychat
A1: That I don't need to be the source of all knowledge. I need to be a life-long learner and model this for my students. This means it is ok to say I don't know, and tell my students that we can figure it out together. #MasteryChat#notperfect
Rita, ES principal from Wisco, graduated from UW Madison (once) and UW Southern Miss (3 times). Now attending the school of rock with Alabama Shakes learning to "Hold On!" #masterychathttps://t.co/BtlZIsgaMu
A1: More conflict/resolution type skills would have been helpful in the beginning - knowing how to work through issues with parents/school staff in a way that continues to bring unity rather than division. #masterychat
A1 - That above all else, it will always be relationships that make the biggest difference. Hard to get kids excited without a connection. #masterychat
Hey #MasteryChat! Heather from upstate NY here. I graduated from @SUNY_Oneonta, @TowsonU & headed that way with one more from @gcu 💕 and there are a couple more, give or take that I attended... I think I have a problem 😳
😁
That really connects to what I'm learning in Ed Psych now about Fuller's theory on survival, task, and impact to focus on the students, not the exterior factors and worries! #masterychat
A1 - I believe a lot of new teachers believe they have to be good at everything, or even that that is the expectations of their co-workers.
Keep the most important aspects of teaching #1, and the rest will take care of itself or you'll learn along the way. #masterychat
A1: The true value of relationships. I knew they were important, but I didn't know that they were the single most important thing to develop and cultivate as a teacher. #masterychat
A1: one thing I wish I had known is there’s more to teaching than the curriculum...we are also parents, mentors, supporters, hug givers, relationship builders! The list goes on...the teacher title is way more than a textbook definition could ever describe #masterychat
I wish I had realized that my job was more about developing learning habits and character and less about teaching students how to pass math tests. #masterychat
A2 - I had a discouraging YEAR! I had more problems thane ver in the classroom and it actually almost made me quite. Instead I created #thegridmethod and learned how to #teachbetter. #masterychat
A1: I was talking to my mentor today about this chat, and she told me to mention how teaching is vastly different from what you learn in college. I learned a lot at ISU, but I wish I learned more about strategies for behavior. A lot is trial and error. #masterychat#masterychat
A1 I wish I would have realized that you don't have to be perfect all the time. This was something that stressed me out all the time in my early classroom years until I realized what was really important (THE Ss AND THEIR LEARNING) not if my lesson was "perfect" #masterychat
You don’t have to grade everything, the work is never done, and the best planned lessons won’t make up for lack of relationships and management. The first year is TOUGH. You can do it!#masterychat
A1: Better time management. Through the years the expectations and responsibilities have grown and working to keep track of paperwork, curriculum, meetings, family, life, etc can be a challenge. Time management is huge! #masterychat
What mediation (if any) strategies have you used with your Ss? Any techniques you'd recommend to a PST that wants to create a safe classroom enviro? #masterychat
This seems like such an important piece of information to be aware of and something as a preservice teacher I would love to learn more about! #masterychat
I totally agree! I think one thing I need to understand before entering the workforce is that I need to master a few aspects of teaching and becoming really good at those rather than trying to be below average at many things! #masterychat#gccedu
In reply to
@effortfuleduktr, @nankr1120, @ashlyntucker_ed
A1: How to take big risks. How to teach without worksheets. How to ask questions rather than answer them. How to facilitate rather than teach. How to lead meaningful play and purposeful inquiry. #masterychat
A1 - Build strong structures that the kids can quickly learn and that you can reinforce positively. Clarity always precedes competence. Just let the kids know what is expected and how they can work loosely within the tighter structures. #masterychat
This is good to know! I am a preservice teacher @GroveCtyCollege and we are learning about the different types of technology we can use in the classroom in our #edtech class #masterychat
In reply to
@edu_ksSkukalek, @nankr1120, @ashlyntucker_ed, @GroveCtyCollege
So many things but you need to relax and recharge more often than you think. I spent a lot of the first year on the wrong side of tired but that was in more less efficient and effective times. Also there is no mold to be a great teacher. #MasteryChat
A1. The University really does not prepare you for a real teaching gig. You learn by doing. Student teaching should be a full year. I'll stop now. #masterychat
Hello #masterychat! I am Eric from Ontario, 🇨🇦. I got my Ed. degree from The University of Western Ontario. Now (14 yrs later) teaching grade 4/5, blogging, & creating Ed. videos and resources. https://t.co/6KGS5o26Tc
Happy Thursday #masterychat peeps! I'm Sara checking in from the Dallas area. I currently teach 6th-8th grade GT Elar. I got my education degree from @LifeAtPurdue. Boiler Up!! 😁 I'm so excited to visit with all of our preservice teachers! ❤
Thank you for sharing! I cannot tell you how impactful a teacher was on me as a student when I developed a relationship beyond the curriculum! It really makes a difference! #masterychat
Wish I knew to find the WHY behind the behaviour. I kinda knew it, but didn't put it into my practice until my first real teaching gig. WHY gives insight. WHY helps discover strategies I can use to support my student. Finding the WHY helps build a relationship. #masterychat
A1: I wish I had had a better understanding of the intersection of general and special education and how I could have best supported my students with IEPs. It took eight years for me to figure it out. #MasteryChat
I wish I would've learned how to communicate effectively with parents and especially how to handle difficult parents. Everything I know has been through experiences. Good and bad! #masterychat
A1 - A lesson I would have liked to have learnt before becoming an educator is the value of self-trust and the power of self-directed learning. #MasteryChat
Hey #masterychat Clan! It’s Nathan Perry here from the outskirts of KC, MO enjoying a snowy night. I graduated from the University of Central Missouri! #gomules
This is so important.... great advice. Personally and academically caring for your students is just as important as the content being learned in the classroom. Such a teacher of impact! :) #gccedu#masterychat
A1 I wish I had learned ways to cope with obstructionists. Till this day I struggle with people who get in the way of what is right for kids. #masterychat
Ahhh relationships! As pre-service teachers, we've been learning the value of relationships before even entering the field. Thanks for your input! #gccedu#masterychat
A1: As a Canadian, I wished I had learned more about standardized testing and the priority it takes in schooling. It was difficult to understand the “testing mindset” that influenced so many expectations/aspects of planning. I felt out of the loop for a while! #MasteryChat
A2 Part 1: My most discouraging moment in teaching happened years ago when I was reprimanded in front of my colleagues for disrupting education w/ cross curricular learning that focused on student voice and choice.
@BaileyMantzell#MasteryChat#Nan3EDU#edumagic#gccedu
Hello hello! First time joining #masterychat! Missed #whatisschool this evening so I popped in here tonight instead! Amber, from Ontario, Special Education Teacher. Got my B.Ed. from University of Ottawa.
A1: before I became a teacher... I wish I had learned about the various paths teachers can take & that it was not only okay to become a teacher... but the best thing to become a teacher 😊💕 #MasteryChat
A2 - I had a discouraging YEAR! I had more problems thane ver in the classroom and it actually almost made me quite. Instead I created #thegridmethod and learned how to #teachbetter. #masterychat
A1: I have been teaching for more than 2 decades & when I was started teaching, I wish someone would have told me how important relationships are. #masterychat I learned the hard way in my first year of teaching. #RelationshipsMatter
Honestly, building strong relationships and providing intentional and specific support...of course, connecting with all the resources our school has available #Masterychat
Q2 part 1: I would qualify this experience as one of the hardest moments teaching is when a student passes away. I experienced that my first year teaching. #masterychat#nan3edu#gccedu#edumagic
A1: That the “I am the teacher so when I tell a student to do something they should and will do it immediately” approach works for every student regardless of their background and history. #masterychat
A2: watching students struggle and it being out of your control to help them, specifically in their home lives. I want to be able to do more for my students. #masterychat
Thank you for sharing! There was a quote that I heard once about comparing attitudes to colds. We have to make sure that we are spreading one worth catching! #masterychat
A1 - I really wish I would have know the importance of mastery and not a grade. It’s important to know that a student achieving proficiency is so much more rewarding. I also wish I would have put more thought into #edtech and my #PLN. #masterychat
Hey, #aimsnetwork! Want to learn alongside your team members? Register your group for the AIMS Network Institute on December 6th and enjoy discounted group rates AND a day of awesome learning from pros throughout Illinois! https://t.co/MxTAt0lj6V@RaeHughart@BryanZwemke
A2 not a moment really, but the profession is exhausting. Sometimes it’s really hard to keep the energy up... then I feel guilty when I don’t bring it all. #masterychat
Wow... it's so important to give students a voice. I love to hear that you stood up for the students even when your colleagues were against you. #gccedu#masterychat
A1: I don't think I fully realized the importance of relationships when I first started teaching. Relationships with students, their families, colleagues. Relationships are everything. #MasteryChat
The one and only time I gave up on a class for the day. It wasn’t them. I refused to adjust for the day. Things were better the next time and it hasn’t happened in the last 10ish years. #MasteryChat
For all the amazing pre-service teachers, continue to use Twitter. I started as a junior, and it changed my life. I hosted #masterychat once, am on a podcast, and I host a chat every Sunday night. If you need support or help along this journey, reach out. #masterychat
A2: I am most discouraged when politics trumps reason. That happens is a big way every few years. Right now, special ed law in @WisconsinDPI is horrible and it gets really discouraging. #masterychat
That's what being a teacher of impact is all about! Not the test scores or your own lesson plans, but all of the students. They are the future! #gccedu#masterychat
A2 part1: most discouraging is knowing I can only do what I can in while students are at school...that I can’t fix their home lives which breaks my heart. The best I can do is be there for them everyday #masterychat
A2: watching students struggle and it being out of your control to help them, specifically in their home lives. I want to be able to do more for my students. #masterychat
A2 - When my colleagues didn’t want to innovate, didn’t want to think differently, when they worried about themselves more than the kids. At the moment - I decided to become a Principal and lead by example. You can complain, or you can do something about it. #masterychat
A2) Early on when my lessons bombed I took it really hard. So critical on myself. Wish I was more resilient back then, bouncing back from failure and pushing ahead. #masterychat
A1: Wish I learned earlier that it’s okay to take learning risks, challenge yourself, be comfortable with making mistakes, & not let failure (or fear of) hold you back! #masterychat
I got chills reading this response!Sure. Small improvements are great. But they won’t do the whole job. Let’s rock the education world with some real, earth shaking, revolutionary ideas!
#masterychat
Thank you for the answer! We are learning about standardized testing at Grove City College, but I feel like there is much more to learn, and it will be hard to prepare for. #gccedu#masterychat
A2: During student teaching I wasn't as organized as I could have been. This made life much more stressful and made me doubt myself. When you start to doubt yourself the job gets 100 times harder! #masterychat
A2 Part 1: I am rarely discouraged, but somtimes it bothers me when educators use the excuse that they don't have time to engage in something new. #MasteryChat
#masterychat#gccedu this is one of the things I'm nervous about dealing with this. I want to be able to help my students and I know that I can attempt to make an impact in their lives
A2: Piggybacking off of my answer for Q1, I will say it is teaching/planning based on scores from assessments that are not even aligned to district curriculum or state standards. This baffles me on a daily basis. #MasteryChat
A2: I lost my temper a lot in my first year of teaching. I was frustrated and had not connected with my Ss. I wish I had that year to "do over" again. My students deserved more from me. #1990DoOver#masterychat
A2) Early on when my lessons bombed I took it really hard. So critical on myself. Wish I was more resilient back then, bouncing back from failure and pushing ahead. #masterychat
what are some ways that you have found success in getting your energy back? This is definitely something that i know i will struggle with as well #masterychat
A2.1: I once had two fourth graders get arrested for breaking into the school and trying to steal money three days before the year ended. I felt like nothing I had done all year had made a single bit of difference. #MasteryChat
A2a: RED TAPE. I just wanted to do what’s best for the students! I also felt that I didn’t have the right words to prove that what I wanted to do was legit, worth while and standard-based. #MasteryChat
A2 - Watching a student take their life. Being their teacher and connecting with them made getting to school the next day quite difficult. #masterychat
A2: watching students just give up or lose focus because of situations they’re going through outside of school. When I feel like I’m not getting through a Ss, it breaks me down emotionally. #masterychat
A2 Most discouraging part is wasting time trying to get help for students that need it. Sometimes for various reasons a year or two can go by ☹️☹️ without the support #masterychat
I feel like there are many times in the classroom where we as educators just want to shut down. We must be positive every day and never give up on the class or us teaching it. #masterychat#gccedu
A1 I wish that I learned that I do not have to have all the answers as the teacher! I can allow my students to discover the answers with me.#MasteryChat
A1: The phrase "you can't please everyone" is a teacher motto you need to learn early on! The little ones we service are the opinions that matter most! #MasteryChat
I, too, find it challenging accepting that there are limits offering assistance to some Ss. Some things are outside our realm of influence; learning that I won’t “save” everyone has been hard (not that it stops me from trying) #masterychat
Most disappointing moment was when a Ss in my care that tremendous progress had been made with, who there were safety and well-being concerns about did not return one day. All after supports and placement necessary to meet his needs had been secured. #HeartBreak#MasteryChat
A2-part 1: having an AP tell me I should find a job elsewhere due to having a difference of phylosophy with the team of teachers I was trying to work with. #masterychat
A2: Most discouraging would be discovering that people you thought were supporters were actually just disingenuous and really not kind at all. #masterychat
This would be so difficult but it is also some important and amazing the influence you are having on your students lives in the classroom which makes teachers roles so vast and amazing! Having the ability to love kids and change their lives is so incredible! #masterychat
Yes, it is so critical for your classroom to be a positive environment for your students. You never know what your students are going through at home, so always be a positive and encouraging light for them! #masterychat#gccedu
A2. When you are mandated to team plan but nobody gets along and you get called out for how poorly your team works, yet admin isn't able to support change either 😔 #masterychat
A2. The first year was tough. Classroom management was tough. If I could go back in time I’d change so much! But you can’t. You just try to get better each day and do the best you can at that given moment! #MasteryChat
A2: When my enthusiasm and excitement for education meets a brick wall of lack of enthusiasm and excuses. It’s so important to find “your people” to support you in this difficult but rewarding career. #MasteryChat
A2: when teachers told me that if I kept thinking out of the box I would burn out. They told me that my ideas would never work and that I shouldn’t try so hard. #masterychat
A2: Having students take a photo of me and distort it. Felt a lack of support by admin. Was told to get thicker skin. Ostracized for seeking help and support.
#MasteryChat
A2: nothing irreversible with my SS, but with colleagues, most discoraging was when colleagues bullied each other & no one stood up for the victim not even admin. #masterychat
A2 part 1: when I was moved from my “home” to where I was round peg in a square hole. My shenanigans were frowned upon.Long 5 years, but it taught me to really appreciate what I have now that I’M BACK singing “The Hokey Pokey” dressed up as a pink t-Rex on crutches. #masterychat
this is so true...its hard not to get emotionally attached to your students, especially when you know what their personal life is like outside of school #masterychat
Yes. You need to buy the book Getting Things Done, and read every word. It is the single best book on organization I've ever read. Top 3 books that have made me a better teacher as well. #masterychat
Honestly, the hardest part of teaching for me is seeing Ts recognized for longevity and not for specific quality of teaching. Do we not know or not value "quality instruction" and making a difference that we just value survival? We need to re-examine what we reward. #masterychat
#masterychat A2 Play most discouraging moment in teaching has been when I discovered that all teachers were not passionate teachers! That was a huge letdown
Thanks for sharing! There is so much to learn but it's amazing to see your perseverance and how you've reflected on your teaching to continue to grow. #gccedu#masterychat
A2 My 1st year I did not know what I was doing and did not have the support that was needed as a first year teacher. So glad I found that in a new district and school that I now get to hire and mentor 1st year teachers. #masterychat
That must have been really stressful! I am glad you had the courage to try something new for your students. Sorry that you got such a negative response. #gccedu#masterychat
A2 I’ve become discouraged when I have had a chaotic day which I feel ineffective and all I’m doing is putting out fires. But I know a new day will bring an opportunity to do things differently so I try to lift myself up pretty quickly #MasteryChat
I completely get this. I love to please people and help them with any problem no matter how big or small. When I graduate I am definitely going to have to enter the classroom with this understanding #masterychat#gccedu
A2b - Just presented at a conference in Pa. One message is to focus on doing your best each day, and avoiding those who spread negativity. #masterychat
I know. Glad I didn’t go through school when all this testing was going on. I guess that could be one reason I use a lot of assessment methods. They hate tests. #MasteryChat
This is such an awesome example of how you witnessed something around you that you did not like and so you worked to change it and influence those around you! So powerful! Thanks for sharing! #masterychat
A2: When my enthusiasm and excitement for education meets a brick wall of lack of enthusiasm and excuses. It’s so important to find “your people” to support you in this difficult but rewarding career. #MasteryChat
Hey all, jumping in late... Rob Glenn, math teacher at SJMS in Salina, KS
A2: Slowly realizing the support you had from admin wasn't upheld by new leadership #MasteryChat
A2: Realizing that raising your voice doesn't help anything. It only disconnects the students.
When I obtained the mindset of, "You never know what that kid has went through. What happened to them last night? This morning? Did they eat? Were they warm?" Be mindful. #MasteryChat
A2P2 - Time, space and distance softened, but I still always wonder about that student. I learnt that you cannot save Ss, but that should not change your passion, dedication or commitment. #MasteryChat
A2: watching students struggle and it being out of your control to help them, specifically in their home lives. I want to be able to do more for my students. #masterychat
Our school has a great partnership with @MarywoodU right now where their students come 3 days a week for full days. In speaking with them it has been a tremendous experience for them and our elementary age students. Helps our teachers too! #masterychat
Know your why! Why do you do it? Because you want to make a difference. You may not even see the difference for a while. Just know if you are working from the heart tour making one! #masterychat
Q2 part 2: I don't know if you ever overcome it, I still have a picture of my first class in my office. You learn from it. You learn to cherish the time that you have with them. It makes you count your days not count down the days. #masterychat#nan3edu#gccedu#edumagic
Two things: Build a good relationship with your cooperating teacher and TAKE OWNERSHIP if are struggling. It is only through self reflection that we can get better. #masterychat
A2: My most discouraging part is when a student is truly working hard but other obstacles are at stake that impact their academics. I am a 1st year teacher, and I have days where I question if I am even meant to be a teacher. #masterychat
A2 - Honestly, the most discouraging moment I’ve had in teaching is seeing first-hand some of the things my students go through at home or in their community. That’s all the more reason why I encourage positivity/community, and I invest authentic empathy towards Ss. #masterychat
Thank you for sharing, Kristy. It must have been really hard to be surrounded by that kind of attitude. We have to be grounded in our purpose as teachers, especially during the hard times #masterychat
Just being there for your students can make a world of difference to one student. How do you show your students you care about them individually? #gccedu#masterychat
I wish that I was encourage to grow my #PLN to gain more perspective + improve my practice, but also to realize that I had ideas + strategies to share with others. I was encouraged to build silos rather than bridges + that set me back. Always build bridges! #MasteryChat
A2 part2: I learned to give all my heart to my students while they are with me, to reflect and imagine being in their shoes to better understand their behaviors and hopefully make a lasting impact so when they do go home they know Miss L is there for them tomorrow #masterychat
Also, when you know certain services would benefit a student but the district has a more reactive vs proactive approach to providing support 😔 #masterychat
A2: don't remember the trigger, but know it was the politics behind the job, remember hitting that wall and asking myself if I could teach forever. Had to remind myself that it's all about the kids. #Masterychat
Two things: Build a good relationship with your cooperating teacher and TAKE OWNERSHIP if are struggling. It is only through self reflection that we can get better. #masterychat
I responded to a parent via email, we got into a heated discussion. I ended up in a meeting with my principal and him. It turned into a rewarding moment because I began by apologizing to the parent. He apologized as well and the rest of the year went really well. #masterychat
A2c - Always remember that the goal is to reach every child, but that may not happen in ways you always think about. It’s why the little things often make the biggest difference. #masterychat
A2.2)
I got over the "homework" problem by realizing that the students who did the homework didn't need it. The students who did the homework had a support system. The Ss who needed me didn't understand. Homework was driving a wedge between my students and my class #masterychat
It was like my second year and it was a class of 33 in a small science room. I was in a mood that day and couldn’t pull out of it. It’s good because the Ss can see we are human and have bad days too. The next day we had a talk and we were all good. #MasteryChat
A2a: Most discouraging moment in education was letting the opinion of others negatively define what I thought I was capable of. Always believe in yourself! Prove the nay-sayers wrong! #masterychat
A2.2 Give everything to the one I could reach. And continue to try to reach those I struggled with. Its hard. You care more than the kids do. Dont quit. Dont give up. #masterychat
Q2 Part 2: I try not to get frustrated when other educators seem stuck in their ways. I just keep sharing what is working for me and what isn't hoping that I can help them find something they can connect with. #MasteryChat
A2 My 2nd or 3rd year I had a parent tell me "I heard all the rumors about you!" It was so hurtful yet gave me a hard look at what my students see and might be saying.
#masterychat
A2: things have shifted significantly since my own learning days. teaching has become much more 3 (and even 4) dimensional. I am trying to keep up with new #edtech and figuring out what works best in the new world #masterychat
A2 II - I sought out how to make my Ss time in school positive, engaging, and safe. Sometimes school is the safest and most caring place Students can go to. School isn’t always just for learning. #masterychat
A1 I wish I would have known more about the available technology to self pave my classroom. I felt like such a failure with a wide range of learners in my room the first couple of years, going too slow or too fast. Now I know every student is working at their level #masterychat
Just want to thank all the teachers out there for sharing their experiences. What a blessing it is to be a preservice teacher and get to be a part of a chat like this! #masterychat
Thank you for sharing, Scott. I am sorry that you were told that, but it must have made you more affirmed in your purpose for being a teacher. All of the focus is on the students and the student learning, nothing else. #masterychat
2A: knowing that the students were what I needed to focus on and doing the best for them. Tune out those things you cant change. Surround yourself with positive people to support you and find solutions not just complain about problem #masterychat
A2. Part 2. Took the whole year. I had to learn my students, build relationships and earn the trust of 8th graders who couldn’t relate to me andnlikewise. That was my toughest year but made me better! Wish I could go back and do what I’ve learned along the way! #masterychat
A2.2: I don't think I've gotten over it yet and it has been years. I had to learn that I can't be everything for everyone, but I've still got to show up every day and do my best, even when, perhaps especially when, others don't. #MasteryChat
That's so great to hear! The students will understand that sometimes people just have bad days. Communication is key in a classroom! #masterychat#gccedu
A2pt2: Temporary fix was I learned how to deal with issues creatively within our handbook. Then met with leadership about the changes and how they have undercut the staff. All we could do #masterychat
A2 Part 1 & 2: The biggest disappointments came on days when I felt I wasn't connecting or getting through to a student. I dealt with it by remembering that every day is a new day to make a difference. Every day is a new chance to make a connection. #MasteryChat
A1) I wish I had known earlier how to set boundaries, shake off the day, and implement self-care. I almost burnt myself out of the profession my first few years in #masterychat
It always meant so much to me when I knew that my teachers cared about me as an individual and were always willing to talk to me and support me. Teachers like you make all the difference in the world! @heARTISTatWORK#GCCEDU#masterychat
A little late, hi my name is Autumn 🍂former MS/HS ELA/SS teacher now working with educators at Turnitin. I wish someone would have told me about what a #PLN can do for a new teacher 👨🏫 #masterychat
Exactly, great advice! It's so important not to beat yourself up, but to use that as motivation to improve each day. I'm sure each classroom has their own challenges, but did you find this classroom management gets easier with more experience as a teacher? #gccedu#masterychat

A2 part 2: I had the BEST mentor and she taught me how to be myself and not listen to others who were putting me down. I learned to only listen to a few chosen people who had my best interest at heart. #masterychat
A2/part2:supported the victim& rallied. Became a source of positive behavior & words in the larger school community. Became the poster child for “ur actions will not dictate my actions” . Remained compassionate & let others know that’s the way to be #masterychat#masterychat
Reflected and realized my mistake. Owned up to it with the Ss and we moved on. Things were fine after that. If I had done anything else they would have been lost. #MasteryChat
Q2 Part 2: I try not to get frustrated when other educators seem stuck in their ways. I just keep sharing what is working for me and what isn't hoping that I can help them find something they can connect with. #MasteryChat
this is so good! we can only control our own actions and work with our best foot forward to help students as much as we can! Hopefully that our actions may help to influence others and they may change their own ways to be more students centered. Thanks for sharing! #masterychat
A2b: overcoming by understanding that I’m not the only one trying to meet students’ needs...We are building, within the school, a culture of shared responsibilities & opportunities ##MasteryChat
A2 I was working as a 7th grade math teacher. A colleague hated me fiercely. She didn’t like the way I taught and, for some reason, felt like she had to put me in my place.
She cornered me in my room& started screaming at me inches from my face. #masterychat
A2b: I stuck it out and waited to return home. I know that I don’t have much to complain about. Love love love my job, my colleagues, my students, and my admin!!! #masterychat
How do you keep such a positive attitude when you have a student coping with things that are out of your control? What things can we do as teachers to help these students while still keeping our professional life separate? #masterychat#gccedu
A2-part 2...I stayed at that school for 7 more yrs. I moved to other grade levels, being SPED that helped -somewhat. I focused on my littles and kept on sharing my thoughts and listening so we could all learn. I perservered through it all! #masterychat
A2: Might seem odd but I was lucky to teach my first 4 years in an alternative school for disruptive youth. There were many challenges but I had great and supportive colleagues and principal who taught me life long lessons in education. I had to sink or swim. #masterychat
A3 I wish I could overcome my discouragement over the amount of testing that is required. If I had a dollar for every time I heard, “You know that not all your assessments have to be in test format”... Ss know they are being assessed no matter how you disguise it. #masterychat
A2 Part 1 & 2: The biggest disappointments came on days when I felt I wasn't connecting or getting through to a student. I dealt with it by remembering that every day is a new day to make a difference. Every day is a new chance to make a connection. #MasteryChat
A2.2 To be honest it’s a battle you may face every year with new students. I like seeing everyone’s quotes about how tomorrow is another day and wipe the slate clean. #masterychat
A1) To forgive my mistakes & focus on the moments! I was so incredibly hard on myself the first years, focusing on the 1 thing that had gone wrong, that I missed enjoying some of the most memorable & meaningful moments. Learn to forgive yourself. You deserve it. ❤️ #masterychat
That must be heartbreaking. I am only now realizing how difficult it will be to watch students struggle and not be able to help them. Thank you for sharing. #masterychat
follow up question, suicide obviously affects everyone involved, so how do you walk through a difficult time like this with your students? #masterychat
Thank you! When I have had parents talk to me about their kids in the past, I usually do a lot of listening and then ask questions. I haven't dealt with a really angry parent yet though. #masterychat
A2: one of my most discouraging moment was when a parent brought their child to a parent-teacher conference and began to get very frustrated with me #masterychat
A2d - Teaching is about making a difference in the lives of students. Academically, socially and physically all matter. We can’t neglect one part for the other. #masterychat
A2.2 after quitting the profession, I read a book that made me realize I was on the right track and not every one would agree. #tlap And, I returned determined to support teachers who were willing to dedicate themselves to their craft & take chances. #MasteryChat
A2 I was told something I wanted to try wouldn’t work before I even finished getting the full thought out of my mouth. Fun fact - I did it anyways and it totally worked! 🙌🏼 #masterychat
It's discouraging when students only see themselves as "school readers" because of the compliance-based, teacher-centered way that we police reading. It's hard to see students lose the love of reading as they move through our systems. #MasteryChathttps://t.co/CU4XBwxM7B
A2.2: As a coordinator, I try to find ways for supporting student learning & growth, even though education still bases everything on test scores. We must look at students individually & assess in multiple ways if we want accurate data to measure learning. #Masterychat
A2.2 #masterychat I learned to stay in my wheelhouse- learn from others, seek growth and new ideas and above all put the well-being of my students first. Trust my instincts and always do what is best for them.
This would be frustrating but all we can do is continue to be patient with parents and continue to keep our eyes focused on the students and helping them in every way we can! #masterychat
i feel like sometimes people forget that it isn't just the parents and the students that can be hard to get along with but colleagues as well #masterychat
A couple classroom management tips: be proactive, always consider tone and approach, build positive relationships, and over plan your lessons. Down time creates opportunities for behavior issues. #masterychat
In reply to
@lyd_peters, @FbellomoB, @nankr1120, @BaileyMantzell
Totally, Alex. We learn that we are not defined by what we face, but by how we face it. We can build strength by focusing on our personal actions. We always have 3 fingers pointing back, right? #masterychat
A2 part 2 - I learned that you have to be willing to try things even when you don’t get the support you planned on-do it anyways and get some real feedback instead of giving up before you start! #masterychat
Thank you for sharing, Ashley! Your efforts and dedication are making an impact. Your students appreciate what you are doing and the greater picture in your work is much greater than the problems of the present. #masterychat
A2: I overcome the hard times by realizing that tomorrow is a brand new day. Yesterday was a rough day for me, and I was questioning my career path, but when I came to school today, I look at my Ss and realize they are my why. I keep pushing myself to be the best. #masterychat
A2) Corruption at the charter school I worked at (at the highest levels). It broke my heart that these already underprivileged children had even more taken away from them #masterychat
They can’t teach that b/c all situations are different. Look at body language- slouched, zoned out, distracted with tech or friends. Ss might need a mental break (usually good for 15 min before they lose focus) or they are bored. I talk to them about non class stuff. #MasteryChat
Good listening skills are super important when it comes to collaborating with parents. They know and love their kids the most! This is an awesome response! #masterychat#gccedu

Hi Jennifer! My name is Elisabeth Bell and I am an English Secondary Education major at Grove City College. How did you handle that situation without overthinking your teacher-image? Any suggestions for preservice teachers? #masterychat
Yes, nobody's perfect and it's so encouraging to see your mindset. Live in the moment to best impact your students! Do you find this easier to do as the years go on? #gccedu#masterychat
Q2 Pt2: #masterychat After my first observation, my supervisor asked me what I could tell him about my students, one Ss specifically, and I couldn't tell him anything. He made the best point of all to me. I needed to know my students to teach my students. Words I live by today.
A2b-I lead a parent conversation w/a positive. Takes the edge off of issues then, follow up w/another note or call soon for a progress check on that issue #masterychat
A2b: I overcame the obstacle by believing in myself. I had done the research & planning & deep down knew what was best for my Ss. Stepped up to the plate at hit it out of the park with more determination & confidence than I may have otherwise. #masterychat
A1: One thing I wish I learned early on as a teacher is that curriculum, initiatives, strategies, and even the way kids learn will change, but building relationships will always remain as a foundational principle for life long impact. #masterychat
It gets easier but at times it can get more difficult first! Have high but attainable expectations of students, establish routines, show them you care, and listen. Relationships before curriculum. Culture trumps strategy. #masterychat
In reply to
@stanley_catie, @nankr1120, @BaileyMantzell
Yea, it was rough. She had been there 20 years and it was my first year there (though 4th year teaching).
I didn’t let her make me cry though. I stood firm and calm ( and promptly balled my eyes out after I had shut the door when she finally left.
#MasteryChat
A2: Overcoming challenges requires reflection. In reflection, we can isolate causes of consternation and replace them with plans for improvement, whether at an individual or institutional level. #masterychat
In my Ed Psych class, we learned about Davis' theory about personal and academic caring! Definitely is something important to bring into the classroom #masterychat#gccedu
A2b.When our Ss work hard, and show small growth and become frustrated. Little steps , continuing to make progress! They need to understand!. #masterychat
Thank you for sharing. I am touched by your dedication to keep pushing forward and your students will be influenced. Thank you for what you are doing #masterychat
A2.2 Some ppl just have really strong personalities that make certain work difficult, esp when it's micromanaged from another strong personality. We got through. It was pretty, but we got through. #masterychat
I've found that some student teachers + new teachers I've mentored want to jump right into teaching skills without first attending to students' social-emotional needs. It's the relationships that make everything else happen, so they're worth spending time on. #MasteryChat
A2: Being in special education, I look at all areas of my Ss life. So when I see a situation that maybe I can't help, I reach out to others who I know may have resources: speech-language paths, psychologists, occupational therapists etc. I've met some incredible ppl. #masterychat
A3: I take OWNERSHIP. If folks aren't getting something, I look to myself first. Was I clear enough? Do I need to re-teach? Clarity is so important. #masterychat
This is so inspiring!! Believing in ourselves is one of the most important aspects of being an effective teacher! When we believe in ourselves we can better believe in our ss and have confidence in ourselves! #masterychat
A3 My go to way to encourage Ss is to show them that I see them that they are noticed. I invite them to my office, send notes in the mail or chat, and check in with students. #masterychat#nan3edu#gccedu#edumagic
A3 #masterychat Building relationships- having an open dialogue to talk about frustration, anxiety etc. The more I can talk openly and honestly- the more I can get to the root of the problem and help them strategize to make things better
A3: Small conferencing with them during a time when the class is busy. 1-1 feedback. Asking them what they do not understand. Addressing their misconceptions... The most important thing is: LISTEN to them and their concerns. #masterychat
I have been asking How can I help you learn instead of saying get to work or asking if there are questions. They see we are in this together and will usually show where they are struggling. Often they don’t know what their questions are. #MasteryChat
A3 - Be honest with them, show you care, talk to them with respect, explain what you are trying to accomplish, and break it down for them. Also food, I’m a mad baker and all my Ss enjoy what I make for them #MasteryChat
Talk with them.
Face-to-face.
Show them I care.
Show them their potential.
Tell them I believe.
Forgive them.
Give them high standards.
Encourage them.
Repeat as necessary.
#masterychat
A3: I love leaving encouraging messages on the desks of my students. Today, we went around the room and wrote compliments to each other on sheets of paper. My students need to know that they are valued. I try my best to create a positive climate in my classroom. #masterychat
A3: One-on-one conferencing never fails! If we need to get together just the two of us to have some power chats & extra support sessions that time is made a priority because they are a priority! #MasteryChat
For me, I run the Wins and Losses edchat, #waledchat which meets after #masterychat, that allows for me to reflect. I podcast to help me reflect. I have also found that finding someone you can trust to make you better helps you grow in your craft.
So true Maddie! I focus on that in my book as well. You might like it. Feel free to check it out anytime at https://t.co/Fu97GlWoUq and reach out to me anytime you like if I can help you in any way on your teaching journey! #MasteryChat
The fact that you recognize this means you ARE meant to be a teacher. Hang in there and advocate/support for them when and however you can, even if you’re just a friendly face. You make more of a difference than you know. ☺️
A3: I’m not sure I have a “go-to.” Building those relationships the first weeks of school help avoid later frustration. If anything, sometimes a student just needs to be DONE for the day and move on. Try again tomorrow. #MasteryChat
You've got to show students that you respect them as collaborators in the classroom - listening to them is the first step in doing this. Students who feel heard are students who grow!! #gccedu#masterychat
The greatest lesson I have learned about teacher bullies is that they are seeking a response. They want power. I believe in what I do & have research & data to support it & a room full of happy children that don’t want to leave when class is over. #masterychat
YES! Kids can't learn if their needs aren't met. When my Ss are hungry, I'd rather let them use 5 minutes to eat a snack than spend 20 minutes trying to gain their focus! #masterychat
I've found that some student teachers + new teachers I've mentored want to jump right into teaching skills without first attending to students' social-emotional needs. It's the relationships that make everything else happen, so they're worth spending time on. #MasteryChat
A3 - My "go to" way is selling them on themselves. Tell them what I KNOW they CAN do and then ask them what's stopping them. Usually it's just themselves but you need to build that into them and show them their potential! #masterychat
A3: I never put it on the students. I typically take the blame and reassure them that we will figure it out together. On the practical side I love retakes, redos, and what I sometimes call upgrades to keep students engaged in a #growthmindset#MasteryChat
Agreed. In college, reflecting was a 2 page paper I had to write at the end of every week of student teaching. Now, it is a constant state of mind. #masterychat
A3: I share personal experience I struggled to get something that everyone else seemed to get and assure them that they, too, can persevere. Then I invite them to select a friend or two and we spend lunch together, eating and playing a board game! #masterychat
A3 A lot of great things happen when there is a strong relational community. One-to-one conversations to unpack confusion or resistance leads to establishing a plan and setting goals for future growth. #masterychat
A3: take time to build relationships. When you learn more about Ss, you can personalize the teaching and learning to make connections they can relate to. #Masterychat
Thank you for sharing. I am touched by your dedication to keep pushing forward and your students will be influenced. Thank you for what you are doing #masterychat
A3: You have to start with building positive relationships from day one. Building a strong level of trust with your students will pay off when they struggle academically. Instilling a growth mindset as a class community will support your students when they struggle. #masterychat
A3: To keep kiddos motivated I allow for LOTS of fun and laughter. Every day. No matter what. A joyful classroom culture keeps kids motivation to work hard. @middleweb#masterychathttps://t.co/qwby3UWr09
A3: it doesn’t matter the age this is a lifelong issue. Finding the entry point to allow the blockages to drop and for learning to happen. #masterychat
✔️ Trust your students.
✔️ Value their literacies.
✔️ Honor their time by giving them relevant learning opportunities.
✔️ Provide timely, meaningful + usable feedback + support.
✔️ Honor the power of yet by encouraging rethinking + revision. #MasteryChathttps://t.co/S5iU6cwGM0
A3 - I always tell my students “I will get you there. It may take some time but I’ll never leave you behind”. And we work until they DO understand! #masterychat
A3 having a #selfpaced classroom allows me to have a lot of discreet one on one conversations with students who are struggling. I start with joking around with them and then we work into either the academic or other issue they’re facing #masterychat
Agreed. In college, reflecting was a 2 page paper I had to write at the end of every week of student teaching. Now, it is a constant state of mind. #masterychat
A3. At times our topics might be things some of our students have never experienced. Try to build relevance and make connections. Might need some visuals for those kids to help build some experience. #masterychat
A 3: At Bronx Arena School in New York, educators have successfully engaged students who were not succeeding in other education environments through personalized academics and supports which provide encouragement https://t.co/kbn98KLCZA#masterychat
A3 - Ongoing conversations. Celebrations and illustrations of personal engagement/successes. Starting with what can be done and building. Living in the land of ‘not yet’. A layered approach built on consistent celebration, love and time and space. #MasteryChat
A3: Break it down into something smaller and fully explain. Also, I look at myself and see if I am doing something wrong or could be doing something better to help them. #masterychat
It's important to show your students that you care about them and that you want them to do well in your class. Showing them you care could be that little push that they need to become fully engaged! #gccedu#masterychat
Hi there! I'm Catie Stanley- a pre service teacher from GCC in PA. Creating a positive atmosphere is so valuable. Building student's confidence through encouragement from their teacher as well as their peers. Thanks for sharing! #gccedu#masterychat
A3: Pull aside for a 1:1 - is the Ss disengaged or merely bored? some differentiation required amongst the big classroom. I find using @Decktoys a great way to give more challenging work for the faster ones and easier work for the slower gp given same content #masterychat
A3: When a S seems to not understand I ask them to talk about what they think they know or understand. When asked what you don't understand it is difficult to put into words what you don't know. Once they tell what is known then I have an idea of how to better help. #masterychat
A3 Listen to my students if they are able to articulate their problems, provide extra support and be a cheerleader. Encourage them to try again #masterychat
Making the contents PURPOSE the forefront of the conversation! By building lessons with an umbrella of purpose, students can be immersed in the fun of learning! #masterychat
I think it is also important to have small conferences with students and engage in their interests outside the classroom. Explore their interests and try to incorporate them into the classroom! #masterychat
Q4: What tone or culture do you try to cultivate in your classroom? Do you believe a formal or informal classroom environment is more desirable? -Austin Latario
@a_latario#MasteryChat#Nan3EDU#edumagic#gccedu
Q4 What tone or culture do you try to cultivate in your classroom? Do you believe in formal or informal environment is more desirable? #masterychat#nan3edu#gccedu#edumagic
A3 I encourage my students by reminding them to keep an eye on the goal. For most of my ELs the goal is to learn enough English to be successful in their classes. #masterychat
Relationships are the “on ramp” to achievement. With authentic relationships secured, we must then leverage the relationship to push student to reach full potential. High expectations with high support. #MasteryChat
I've found that some student teachers + new teachers I've mentored want to jump right into teaching skills without first attending to students' social-emotional needs. It's the relationships that make everything else happen, so they're worth spending time on. #MasteryChat
A3- another 2 parter-not understanding needs one on one time in short increments Not using potential needs some talk to me time-often I find there’s an underlying cause #masterychat
A1- that you didn’t have to be an expert on a topic before you taught it. That’s it is more authentic to facilitate a class inquiry and co-learn alongside the students. #masterychat
A3: If a student isn't getting something, don't give up on them! Talk with the student. Let them know that you believe in them. Tell them that they matter. And be willing to reflect and try a new approach. Make the learning relevant to them. Give them options. #MasteryChat
Hey Elizabeth! It was rough yet I took a step back and talked to her daughter to really understand what was going on. I found out some things I was doing that was making this girl feel unloved and unwanted. It was a much needed time of growth for me. #masterychat
A3: Often times, students do not perform to their ability because they do not know if the learning environment is a safe place to fail. Create a classroom where risk-taking is not only permissible, but is encouraged! #masterychat@ERobbPrincipal
A3: I think having them track their own progress so can see the growth is so powerful. Celebrate reading 3 more sounds than last week or 1 more problem correct so they can see they are improving!!! #masterychat
A3: To keep kiddos motivated I allow for LOTS of fun and laughter. Every day. No matter what. A joyful classroom culture keeps kids motivation to work hard. @middleweb#masterychathttps://t.co/qwby3UWr09
Yes! This is a great mindset that all educators need to remember. I try to never forget that no matter how hectic my day is there is always time to pause and listen my students. #MasteryChat
The first teacher that I shadowed this semester was telling me all about this. She told me that the first thing she learned while teaching in an urban school was to build relationships, therefore building trust! #masterychat#gccedu
Jumping in late! 👋 A3: one on one time! Having lunch with kids in my room helps them feel comfortable and realize they have a safe space to talk #masterychat
A3: 1. Build relationships and check in. Sit next to them and learn with them. Don’t let them drown. Provide bough support to they feel safe, but let them save themselves. #masterychat
A3: I love to write encouraging letters to my students. I also try to build a strong relationship with my student by having lunch with them or doing something special together. I want them to know I care and believe in them! #masterychat
No because even my own perspective might be off. Instead I am constantly checking for understanding for EVERYTHING. You would be surprised how much we take for granted that students are understanding. #masterychat
A3 When I was in the classroom I held "office hours" with my middle school Ss I met with each student to help clarify concepts, ask them questions and let them ask me questions Sometimes we just talked things through then reflected together and set goals #masterychat
A3: I think having them track their own progress so can see the growth is so powerful. Celebrate reading 3 more sounds than last week or 1 more problem correct so they can see they are improving!!! #masterychat
There is something to be said for lessons that students feel are relevant to their lives outside of school. That entry point leads to excitement and eventually empowerment. #masterychat
Yes! I've been learning about this in my Educational Psychology class this week. What do you find the most effective ways to create this environment? #gccedu#masterychat
A4 I believe that the tone I portray in my class is relaxed and inviting. I try to greet everyone as they come in, usually have music playing, & connect with Ss as they come in. I think an informal learning environment for my class works. #masterychat#nan3edu#gccedu#edumagic
I remember being a pre-service teacher and hosting a chat like this at my university, but this is incredible. I am speechless. These pre-service teachers are so inspiring to me as a new teacher, and I cannot wait to see the lives that they will change. #masterychat
A4 - The culture I try to build is one of growth, positivity and trust. I believe that formal systems, routines and structure can provide the security so that informal and student centered environments can thrive. #masterychat
Show your students you make mistakes- that you take chances and fail but that you keep moving forward. The more they see you overcome the more it will inspire them to keep trying too #masterychat
A4: I strive to develop a positive class culture. Being respected is more important than being liked, but the two are not mutually exclusive. Establishing clear procedures and structure allows for times to be informal, and it creates a space where Ss can feel safe. #masterychat
This sounds like such a great way to encourage students! When they can reflect on their own work they can see how far they have grown !! So great!! #masterychat
A3: I've got an S who literally will say "I DON'T GET IT" when new concepts are introduced and frustration starts. He now says "I don't get it...YET!". A little thing but powerful #YET#masterychat#growthmindset
A3 Resiliency is an expectation in my class. When I make mistakes, I own them and model learning from them. It is ok to not know, but it is never ok to not try. Grit modeled and in the mindset of the teacher leader is vital. #masterychat
A3: Try building that trust and slowing building their confidence to help them see what you see. Sometimes it’s a chat in the hall or at recess or even a smiley face! #masterychat
A4: I try to build a collaborative student centered classroom. I want to support students not control or manage them. We are in it together. One of my few rules is that you can't ask me to go to the bathroom, just go. #MasteryChat
Q4: What tone or culture do you try to cultivate in your classroom? Do you believe a formal or informal classroom environment is more desirable? -Austin Latario
@a_latario#MasteryChat#Nan3EDU#edumagic#gccedu
We can’t be afraid to get off the porch and take healthy risks. Having a growth mindset and recognizing that failure is a learning experience is so beneficial. #masterychat
A3: One-to-one conferencing with the student works well for me. Giving them my undivided attention and showing that I care about their understanding & progress. It is well worth the time when the ‘lightbulb’ sparks. #masterychat
A3: My “go-to way” to encourage students is listening and guiding students to resource they need to be encouraged.
Connecting with parents and finding out what’s going on at home would be my next step!
#masterychat
Awesome advice, thank you for sharing! I am constantly being reminded to be humble as a teacher because the students are the most important! #masterychat
We just put up our brag wall...not for "great" work but for when we failed big and learned something important from the fail! We will brag about our biggest and BEST MISTAKES! #MasteryChat#NeverGiveUp
A4 - I strike a balance, formal during direct instruction, informal during guided practice and independent work. You need to be flexible and adaptable #MasteryChat
A4: In Singapore, we are pretty much in a formal environment. At home, I try to make it much more informal when I tutor my kids, otherwise they will feel absolutely stifled #masterychat
A4: My goal was for my students to feel safe to be themselves; I flew my geek flag proudly and encouraged them to fly theirs, too. I wasn't always successful, but this was always my goal and some years we did pretty well! #masterychat
I think it is important to learn students' interests and engage with them on those topics. See if you can incorporate those interests into class learning and assignments! #masterychat

A huge part of a student's achievement is having one meaningful adult that believes in them + encourages them in their educational lives. This helps student self-efficacy + confidence, things that have huge effect sizes in Hattie's research. #MasteryChat
Our community...don’t like to teach them as isolated individuals. I teach some, you teach yourself some, you teach each other some and it’s very informal. They stop competing with each other then. That and it’s about what you know not the number of points you earn. #masterychat
Q4: What tone or culture do you try to cultivate in your classroom? Do you believe a formal or informal classroom environment is more desirable? -Austin Latario

Making your students realize their potential to learn and grow. This is so powerful!! Thank you for sharing :) How did you get your student to adapt this mindset? #gccedu#masterychat
A3: I'm also teaching my Ss that MISTAKES ARE OK! My Ss have a habit of saying "I made a mistake" while doing work, so I've been responding by asking "Are mistakes OK? YES!" and then we discuss and learn together. #masterychat#growthmindset
I LOVE this! Letters are so meaningful and take time so when we do that for our students they can truly know how much we care about them! This is so great and so special! #masterychat
A4: I want a culture of respect, and I hope it comes across when I build relationships with my kids. I try to coach my guys on when/where to use it. When I teach, it's a mix of both. That's an important skill #masterychat
The way you take the time to greet us all in the morning and share your energy with us makes coming to this 8 am class so much easier! We need your energy at that hour! Thank you! #gccedu#masterychat
A3: #masterychat I would say my "go to" way of supporting students is to A) know my Ss and how they learn and B) meet them where they are. I know it sounds repetitive but relationships truly are the key to working with your Ss.
A1: I wish I would have learned sooner how important relationships. It makes a huge difference in not only the climate, but also makes management a little easier. #masterychat
