Meet and chat with colleagues about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) on Twitter! The best hour of professional learning you'll get in 30 minutes. Held the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 9-9:30PM ET.
Welcome to the #udlchat Please introduce yourself and name your favorite dog or cat breed. I’m Ron Rogers from Ohio and my favorite right now is the yellow lab Doodle #udlchat
Megan from McGuffey SD. Coming to you from the very warm PA. Favorite animal Saint Bernards. Although my dog ate almost every afternoon snack until I was 8! #udlchat
You see the clearest connection between #SEL & #UDL in the engagement principle, but if you look closer, it's actually embedded in all three UDL principles. Learning is emotional work. #UDLchat
A1. The framework directly supports the affective network...how we feel about learning and the LE. #udl supports relationship-building, coping skills, and self-regulation. #udlchat
A1:To be an expert learner you have to be able to regulate to meet your goals and utilize executive function skills so when the going gets tough you can get back to work #udlchat

A1: Learners who are purposeful, motivated, resourceful, knowledgeable, strategic & goal-directed are more empowered- this creates higher self-efficacy. #udlchat#udlky
And helping students understand that the options that work for you today might not work for you tomorrow, and I’ll scaffold/ help you make good decisions for your learning. #udlchat

A2: all of them can! Flexible means to social emotional and academic and skills goals... so much learning ... as learn what they need to do best learning! #UDLchat
A2 affective network is always the first thing that comes to mind when I think about UDL. Valuing the voices and choices of our learners is critical to our work. #udlchat
A2: "Vary demands and resource to optimize challenge" reminds me that I need to consider everyone is in a different place emotionally and different times #udlchat

A2 I could go on for days, but I’m going to zone in on Sustaining Effort & Persistence. Providing mastery oriented feedback requires empathy, and empathy means someone is paying attention to the learner and being intentional in the way they coach that learner. #udlchat
A2: I could make a case for any guideline being connected to SEL but I was thinking about options for comprehension...if one understands something at deep level, there’s usually a high value placed on it...kinda like OUR LOVE of UDL and our desire to know more! #udlchat
A3 sometimes it looks like taking time from what you had planned to address real issues in a safe environment and not regret one moment of that time. #udlchat
More communication- we can never read someone’s emotion- we need to develop language to share what’s going on #udlchat#RULER from Yale ctr emotl intell
A3: Options! Teaching how to make choices and learn from choices, modeling self-regulation and scaffolding to support all learners with executive function skills #udlchat
A3: Well, I suppose it looks different for everyone on different days. Today in post secondary it looked like students getting frustrated learning a new technology and me deciding it was time for a story about dogs #udlchat
A3: Like most things in a #UDL learning environment, #SEL can look different depending on context and content. The important constant is the rigorous learning goal, whether social, emotional, or otherwise academic. #UDLchat
A3 An environment where feelings are ok and validated. Safe to express those feelings while being supported in expressing them in healthy ways. Feeling comfortable in showing what they know and have learned in a unique way and being confident that it will be encouraged. #udlchat
A3: Some Ss, like those with ADHD, feel dumb in school because traditional teaching is just the wrong fit for them. UDL gives them the scaffolding, support and choices they need so they FEEL like the expert learners they really are! #udlchat

A3 I think it starts by taking account of where every learner is at the start of every lesson. By making meaningful connections with our learners we are better able to meet them where they are. Our learners come to us with the very best they have at that day and time. #udlchat
A3: This also reminds me that it's been a rough week for those in education (also everyone). I gave my teacher candidates time to process. We played catch and talked about emotions. A log #udlchat

A4: As always, we need to anticipate learner variability, even when it comes to #SEL in our learning environments. #UDL your #SEL, people! #PlanForVariability#UDLchat
Your post makes me think about the fact that I sometimes “jump” into things because I am ready but our my students always ready emotionally? If there not, does anything we do really matter? Thanks for sharing! #udlchat
A4: Students often see that they matter to teachers more than just assignments and tests. This leads to students showing you their true self and all that comes with it, including some amazing learning #udlchat
A4. Students know that teachers care for them, will push them to do their best, will pay attention to their needs, and open up possibilities for them. It looks like connection is more important than compliance. It looks like kids know they’ve got a champion. #udlchat
A4 They take more risks in sharing ideas and feelings. They communicate their feelings more and begin to encourage others to do so. They return the support they've been given. #udlchat
At the start of every lesson, yes! I think about students changing classes and you just never know what can change in 3 minutes! We need to take time to find out! #udlchat

What an amazing chat! In light of recent events, it is so critical to remember to stop and let our kids have a voice in a safe supportive environment. #udlchat

I just looked at Dr. Brown’s link and I’m totally buying the book on my Nook tonight! I’m hoping to focus my dissertation on how UDL can be super-helpful for Ss with ADHD. Thanks for posting! #udlchat
A3. Do you guys believe it’s possible to drive academic achievement by learning course concepts through music while incorporating UDL Principles? If yes, how? #udlchat
