Morning, #edugladiators & #nt2t. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. I'm standing in middle of busy chat intersection where traffic buzzing around me is about blended learning & media literacy. Amid bustle, I see connections.
A1: Blended learning is a way to combine online & offline learning so S's have more control over time, place, pace, and path for more meaningful & personalized experiences. #edugladiators Station rotation & Flipped are the ones I see most.
A1: When students are getting traditional instruction, i.e. teacher centered and some instructional time through the use of a device. Hope I am getting it right? New topic to me. #edugladiators
A1: my understanding is that blended learning recognizes the value of face to face engagement AND digital engagement and looks for ways to develop kids with skills in both arenas. #edugladiators

A1: Blended is releasing the responsibility to students of pursuing and furthering their understanding. They choose the location, method and community for their learning on Blended days.
#edugladiators
A1: every Blended Learning attempt I have had has failed. For a lot of reasons but one is access out of school. I look at it as an opportunity to build out of school learning opportunities into the classroom. #EduGladiators
A1 I see blended learning as a mix of EFFECTIVE use of technology and instruction while maintaining the facilitation of the instruction by the teacher. #edugladiators
A1: Blended learning would look like Ts engaging with well connected and resourced Ss, inside and outside of the traditional classroom setting. Less “sit and get.” More “grow and show.” #EduGladiators
A1: Blended learning combines online education & opportunities for online interaction along with traditional classroom methods. It requires the presence of both the teacher & student in the classroom setting, with some student control over the pace. #EduGladiators

Blended learning is a personalized approach to pedagogy. Ss receive a blend of device use and in class instruction to develop content mastery. #edugladiators
We also refer to blended learning as our hybrid courses . . . grad students meet once a month on the weekends and online the rest of the semester #edugladiators
Great definition! It can be tough for Ts to relinquish control. Requires trust in students and confidence that you can get back on course if the lesson drifts too far... #EduGladiators
A1: Blended learning would look like Ts engaging with well connected and resourced Ss, inside and outside of the traditional classroom setting. Less “sit and get.” More “grow and show.” #EduGladiators
A1: Blended Learning, according to @gcouros - “Shouldn’t all learning be blended?” Yes. It’s utilization of tech to augment/support learning objectives. It is a healthy & purposeful mix of tech & non tech. #EduGladiators
a1b. It's a mistake to see blended learning as *only* being digital & face-to-face. It's so much more than pulling in digital/online/tech!! #EduGladiators
a1: blended learning involves using multiple modalities with multiple contents. Tech is used to enhance, not replace, traditional activities #edugladiators
#edugladiators A1: Learning that occurs online and F2F with a balance between the two that works for each individual community of learners. One size does not fit all.
A1 Blended learning involves cultivating know-how through mixed media (some in person & face to face, others digital & distant), which also demands cultivating media literacy for navigating, managing, assessing these inputs in service of subsequent outputs. #nt2t#edugladiators
A2: I find a station rotation model to be the easiest to implement, especially in primary grades. @Catlin_Tucker is an amazing resource for this! If you are worried about management, check this post out. https://t.co/7YeqZIPSUp#edugladiators
A1. I think it is a combination of in class direct teacher instruction & online instruction. Ss would be differentiated in class utilizing both or actuall class attendance could be reduced utilizing at home online instruction. #EduGladiators
I’m interested for you to expand this concept. I understand it’s not digital OR face to face but blended learning seems to be at the intersection of the two. Is there a third factor you’d include? #edugladiators

A2: Our Learning Commons is open to Blended students throughout the day. Just creating an environment conducive to flexible learning opportunities helps.
If Ss need their teacher, their door is still open, yet so is our whole school.
#edugladiators

Great question! I think you would have to extend the learning some way. You would have to go beyond consuming knowledge via #twitter and then share, build or create content in the community where you work. #EduGladiators
A2: Student choice- since they graph their own data, they know where they’re struggling. They choose a standard to work on after our small group time & then may choose the project of the week. Spiral, reteach, differentiation, and CHOICE! #EduGladiators

Good morning - from northwest Indiana!
A1. Blended learning is taking all resources available (book, teacher, internet, peers, etc.) and maximizing student engagement!
#edugladiators
A2: I’ve seen blended models that involve 1:1 devices used during certain portions of the class period for core subjects like math and ELA. #edugladiators
A2: Here's my current situation: My SmartBoard isn't working and I have two entities arguing over who's to fix the problem. In the meantime, my students and I are doing things "old school." It's been like this since before school started. #EduGladiators

Blended learning success has come for me when students can choose to work on content independently, with a partner, with small groups, or direct instruction with me. #EduGladiators
Seeing the blend as "digital" or "online" is limiting. Why does it have to be *just* that? What about simply non-face-to-face? Is that not the core? Back in that day it was read this photocopied magazine article...or watch this VHS tape before class. ;) #Edugladiators
#edugladiators A2: We are 1:1 MacBooks. In French, any blended learning happens in class - not at home. Based on my ss' feedback, blended learning is a fail when the edu/coach is not the primary part of the equation.
A2: Student choice- since they graph their own data, they know where they’re struggling. They choose a standard to work on after our small group time & then may choose the project of the week. Spiral, reteach, differentiation, and CHOICE! #EduGladiators
A2. Again I go back to engagement. I can throw relationships and culture into the recipe as well, but know your students and be willing to shift!
#edugladiators
That is tough! Sometimes when I do stations in my class, I set up my iPad or computer at the station and do small group activities when smartboard not cooperating ##edugladiators

A2: Many variations. One example is 5th grade Maker Space. Ss decide on a focus, propose a project that will demonstrate their learning and check in with Ts along the way. High interest for Ss and Ts. #edugladiators
A2 Blogs have been a great tool for me; they allow my sending reminders, curating study strtegies, ec. for 24/7 access, and to keep students engaged and on top of things with timely posts #EduGladiators
I think we are using those words differently. I think that is where the disconnect is. I am thinking more in terms of arena. You seem to be focused on medium. Am I off on that? #EduGladiators

A2: Dependson my class/subject. HS Eng I use some digital text, & some books, vocabulary & grammar practice are mostly tech, assessments are a mix as well. Yearbook is all tech. Mythology is mostly non tech. #EduGladiators
A3: Blended learning is a way to Personalize learning, but just because you are blending, doesn't mean you are personalizing. S's achievement & engagement is the goal! Giving S's voice is a great starting place. #edugladiators@EduGladiators@sylviaduckworth@khmmc@bbray27
A2 @Google Classroom, @Flipgrid are the two most prevelant in my classroom. I love @Flipgrid because they opportunity students have to explain their thinking! #edugladiators
Does blended learning require online learning at home? Is it possible for students to receive all of their content at school and not have online assignments to do at home? Would love to heat how folks utilize BL in their class. #edugladiators
#edugladiators Blending learning incorporates all of the resources that target distinct learning styles. I love technology, but old school things work well too! Learning stations are a great strategy for blended learning.
#edugladiators A2 cont: For my French world, I do short live lessons on communicative structures. In the past, I have followed up w/vid explanations to view when and where ss choose. I'd love to continue, but need an easy app to do it on an iPad.
And how about getting older cellphones that can work on wifi and have been cleaned of items on them, and can be used for Ss to work with the online tools

A2: we use choice boards made w Google Slide & posted in @CanvasLMS to give students blended learning options. But if they’d rather receive guided practice with teacher that’s is another option too #EduGladiators
#EduGladiators a2. When we use online (or other) as a format/media in police training, we use F2F (in-class) time for scenarios, simulations, practical applications, debate, case study, physical practice.

This is a good point. We often see "blended" as digital as that's the context in which our work is usually done. However, "blended" in a broader sense can be as its name implies, bringing together and melding different approaches into a singular approach. #edugladiators
A2 Hyperdocs are great for self-paced & blended learning. By connecting learners w/all different kinds of media (whether curated by teacher or found by students themselves), hyperdocs offer abundant opportunities for honing media-literacy skills. #nt2t#edugladiators
A3: Personalized learning is a customized menu informed by observation and conversation.
Blended learning is the environment in which personalized learning can optimally be achieved.

To me blended learning is a blend of educational approaches with students still responsible for the same content. Personalized learning is students picking the content. #EduGladiators
A2. The structure could be based on differentiated instruction where teacher direct instruction is reinforced through a student specific needs computer assisted program. It also could be used for enrichment as well. #EduGladiators
Great point of clarification. Blended Learning in edu is seen as the dance between tech and no tech usually. Using this approach effectively addresses Gen Z preferences & created opportunity to personalize learning.
#EduGladiators
A3 Well I’m thinking blended learning is a combo of learning options at home/school where Personalized Learning is providing S’s with resources to support and/or challenge their learning with tools #edugladiators
Yes, as awesome as technology is in our lives, what we've seen over time is that the human element of communication and conveyance of concepts is still essential to learning. The essence of teaching is the conveyance of a concept from one person to another. #edugladiators
So it is more related to medium then? Because I am seeing it more as a venue/destination. I’m either in relationships digitally or face to face. That may be my disconnect. My mistake in the concept. I’m chewing on making the leap to focusing on medium #EduGladiators
A2: Being a social studies educator, I love using Google Expedition for virtual tours. It is an awesome tool to get students engaged in the content. #EduGladiators
A3 personalized is specific to students and blended learning is a method to PL for students, blended all Ss are completing tasks at own pace, and mixed in is some PL #edugladiators
#edugladiators A3 Personalized learning allows for students to target an area or explore a topic that they need to work on. In blended learning, students are all learning the same concept but the delivery may be different.
A:2 Good morning from VA! I agree w @Mo_physics I typically use canvas lms in my class and then couple that with student choice for each activity. In my class I always try to give the students a choice between the "old school" and the "new school" way to do things #EduGladiators
You might be more right though. I see it more relationally; how do teachers relate to students. They can’t relate in a way beyond face to face or digital; that was where I was stuck #edugladiators
Which is why, in some regards, I see "blended learning" as...well...old wine in new skins. Basically rebranding so some online e-learning firm makes money. It's just good education principles! #EduGladiators
A3 First, I believe it is necessary to define the two and make sure individuals have a clear understanding of what they are and how they look in a classroom. Then, discuss what they would look like using examples of effective uses #edugladiators

A3: Blended learning is a terrific way to personalize learning. Flipping the classroom allows Ss to go through the direct instruction as often as they need, online adaptable programs help Ss practice they skills they need, etc. #edugladiators
Well, the problem is our pedagogy has been fairly sound, but it has been having trouble adapting to a new environment or venue. We haven’t spent time looking at how pedagogy transfers relationally over digital mediums. #edugladiators
A3) Personalized learning speaks more to the S's specific needs, next steps,& sometimes interest. Blended learning speaks more to the format & how the instruction is being provided. #edugladiators
I love this being offered to students. Don't we as adults enjoy the moments in our professional and personal lives when we have voice and choice? This is a part of preparing students to be college and career ready, practicing expression of voice and choice. #edugladiators
I agree as I don’t think I’ve heard of them as interchangeable before ( unless they’ve used them interchangeably and I didn’t realize it!) #Edugladiators
Great idea! I would also like one where I could write on a “whiteboard” while recording along with it. Easy to down/upload to our LMS (Canvas.) #edugladiators
#edugladiators A2 cont: For my French world, I do short live lessons on communicative structures. In the past, I have followed up w/vid explanations to view when and where ss choose. I'd love to continue, but need an easy app to do it on an iPad.
Indeed, as my friend @PhilEchols says, "Read your audience." Knowing your students allows you to tailor the message in a way that connects with them most effectively. We do that as adults. If someone is an email person, we email them rather than send a text. #edugladiators
A3: It’s 2018, nearly ‘19 🤪, so personalized learning or directly engaging with each students unique needs, should be taking place in all classrooms. Blended looks more like providing access to digital resources to allow students freedom to discover.
A3: Personalized learning doesn't actually have to involve any tech. Blended learning makes it really easy to accomplish personalized learning on a daily basis. #EduGladiators
Maybe more teachers should look *outside* traditional school teaching culture & see how other industries have been doing it for years. ;) #EduGladiators
A3: I believe you can personalize learning without it being blended. Personalized learning is structured to the needs of the individual which may not be best in a blended learning style. #EduGladiators
Of course you belong! All are welcome and it’s great to hear someone outside of edu’s take and what connections they bring to the topic! #EduGladiators

A3 PL involves student ownership in the process of learning. It doesn’t require technology integration. A blended learning environment is a tech based way for a student to take more responsibility in setting goals but is not necessarily PL #EduGladiators
#edugladiators Blended learning does not have to be at home, and not all members of our communities can spend even more time on school after 3:30. #NoDailyHomeworkForUs
Does blended learning require online learning at home? Is it possible for students to receive all of their content at school and not have online assignments to do at home? Would love to heat how folks utilize BL in their class. #edugladiators
Those sound like good places to start. I have sometimes thought that we should try to deepen the rich conversations that start on #twitter but am not sure what that would look like. #edugladiators Would be interesting to explore...
A4: Start with what is available and who you can get in your corner. We have an amazing intergrator who is available to mentor and support @greg_mauller!! If he doesn't know, he will help to figure it out! No support? Connect with those who are doing it! #edugladiators
A4 I’m already doing blended learning in a small way I provide access to most of our learning through Google classroom but I still have S’s with no access #edugladiators
A3 It starts with student choice such as a choice board for assignments or a menu of options. This provides students with a sense of ownership of the learning. I always label the level of difficulty too #edugladiatorshttps://t.co/0b2Ie2Ko0Q
A4: honestly? I’d start with the students. What are they already doing? If half the kids in the class are already comfortable with a platform, how do we get everyone involved. (1/2) #edugladiators
A3. Blended learning is more of a technique, online & direct instruction. Personalized learning is more of a strategy where all methods/resources are used to meet the unique individual needs of the student. Blended learning can be used to personalize learning. #EduGladiators
A3 Incorporate choice into blended learning opportunities in order to personalize them, which also opens doors to both obvious & unexpected interdisciplinary opportunities. #nt2t#edugladiators
A4) I LOVE using Seesaw! I think it's a great tool. I leave educational videos in there for my young learners to watch during math stations. #edugladiators
a4. Find out where students can prime-the-pump for an upcoming topic in class...& give pre-coursework to do on their own (in whatever format/medium is appropriate). #EduGladiators
A4: Best way to start is to analyze what your objective is, then see what tool best supports that. @Flipgrid@PearDeck@goformative and Google Tools (Slides) are great ways to get started and really tap in to engagement of Ss with your content. #edugladiators
A4.1: and if a group of students who are traditionally marginalized in our society are all on the same venue, choosing to start there could really empower and encourage! #edugladiators
#edugladiators A3: Blended & personalized are def 2 separate concepts, but can compliment ea other. Both can be wildly over implemented in classrms. Both need a highly interactive edu who leads the way. Neither one should put all the responsibility in hands of learner.
A4: Is start with Screencastidy, YouTube and EdPuzzle. You don’t have to recreate the wheel. There is a lot already in existence. YouTube Playlist can be a GREAT tool! #EduGladiators
A4 I would start with the “why” I want to do it. I see it as a way to be more efficient meeting the needs of more Ss in class through differentiation. It would allow me to do a better job of monitoring as well because I am not tied down to direct instruction #EduGladiators
A:4 if I were just starting out I would check out the common area on canvas LMS. Great resource! You can find everything from lessons to entire courses premade. #edugladiators@CanvasLMS
A4: as a science teacher I love @PhETsims for blended learning that gives students opportunities to explore rather than simply answer a series of questions. They can then create a written response to summarize learning #EduGladiators
#edugladiators A4: I need to bring back follow-up tutorials on language concepts. It would be nice to do more cultural blended learning as our novices need English initially to compare cultures/learn empathy.
#edugladiators Thanks! Now I remember that it was Explain Everything that I used 4 years ago. (I’ve changed schools twice since then.) and I’ll check Stage.

A4 Relatively low bar for blending & personalizing: I've been dabbling w/canned comments via mix of Google Keep & Classroom, plus Checkmark extension (https://t.co/kD6QF4NOLP) to point students to resources that can help them revise/edit aspects of their writing. #edugladiators
A4: I would plan it with colleagues, make it super interesting for the kids ! Enquire-based learning approach would be awesome! Maybe #PBL ? #EduGladiators
Excellent chat! This is one of the few chats I could actually “like” every comment. This is clearly a resource! I am never the smartest person in the room. Thank goodness! 😅 #EduGladiators
Indeed...How many times have we as adults gone through a "drive thru" at a restaurant and given specific instructions on our order only to be given something totally different? We then feel as though our voice, even with our choice of food, has not been heard. #edugladiators
