#engsschat The traditional ones, Halloween Thanksgiving, etc. But we are now at 37% Latino we are beginning to explore those traditional celebrations as well. As a Ss teacher, I exposed my Ss to as many cultures holidays as I could.
#engsschat A2 Regardless of where we are in our lessons, I always take time to focus on the holiday. Take time to look at Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. Love talking about origin of Santa, thanks to the feast of St Nicholas!
#engsschat A3. I ask, in a roundabout way. We talk a lot about culture. One of the categories is Family Traditions that define you. Ss love to share about what makes them unique!

#engsschat Mystery Skypes/Hangouts have helped us with Holidays. We visited with Sweden recently and have Russia and Israel in the next month. Ss love sharing about customs.

I really like the movie Joyeux Noel for WWI. The day that the Germans, Scots, & French put down arms for Xmas Eve. Anything on WWII, etc.? #engsschat#sschat@PBSLrnMedia
I did an exchange program in 11th grade. My high school took 25 students to Denmark where we stayed with our assigned host families. We got to go to their school and learn all about their culture. Very rewarding #engsschat
Continuing my last post- the Danes got to come to America and live with us for ten days. We took them to the statue of liberty, nyc, and DC and they got to learn about US history and traditions #engsschat
Also, one of my English teachers did an exchange with a teacher from Hungary. The teacher from Hungary ended up being my senior year English teacher. I still write her today... Great experience on both ends! #engsschat
#engsschat A5 One of the requirements of our foreign exchange Ss was to present history and culture lesson to the Ss. Amazing what our Ss learned and ask.
I have an Oral Tradition project, where students have to talk to their family and find a story that has been passed down. A lot of students don't know their own history yet. #sschat#engsschat

I remember doing Flat Stanley in elementary school. I got to learn a lot about students cultural and family backgrounds when they shared pictures to the class. It was neat to see where Flat stanley travel the world... #engsschat
#engsschat A6. Thanks to Google Slides, we can now extend collaboration projects to many Ss. My colleague, @1988project, does a tremendous job of facilitating information and having Ss collaborate to share knowledge with the class.
A7 Beyond basic relationship and caring skills; connect with them on social media. I have a classroom twitter, IG & Snap account for that purpose. Also attend their extra curricular events. Show up to what matters to them. Shop where they work. Engage #engsschat#sschat
#engsschat A7 Making SS relevant! We have made an effort to bring primary sources into our classes to engage our Ss. It all started with our 1980s course and has grown to our other classes. Here are some of our speakers.
