#ycsdchat I agree with all of the talk of independence, but they have to learn to work with teams. Many times innovations fail because of lack of ability to work as a group to be solution oriented.

    In reply to @MarleneRiccio
  • kecagle - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:22 PM EST
This is so true. Each person brings different perspectives, ideas, solutions, etc. to the group. I do my best work when I collaborate with others. #ycsdchat

  • drjaimemiller Nov 7 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2: #ycsdchat Itā€™s so important to teach skills, not just content. Iā€™m focused on writing, analysis, critical thinking, communication, and cooperation. These are the things that have to be cultivated and tested, not just recall.

    In reply to @drjaimemiller
  • MsInsley - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:27 PM EST
A3: Giving students the opportunity to work with a mentor in their desired field would help them to have a clear picture of what the career is like and what it takes to be successful in that field. #ycsdchat
  • MarleneRiccio Nov 7 @ 8:27 PM EST
And helping students understand there is more than one way to solve a problem & often more than one right answer #ycsdchat
    In reply to @MsZabicki
  • MrsSMBean Nov 7 @ 8:29 PM EST
A3: I think early planning and exploration is key. Today our guidance counselor was working through Academic & Career Plans with my 7th graderā€™s and having them take interest and value assessments online. Of course it will change but the early discourse is key. #ycsdchat
  • MsZabicki Nov 7 @ 8:29 PM EST
A3: YES! I took advantage of the mentorship program as a senior in high school. It was such an amazing experience to work at YES with Myra Ingram! #ycsdchat

  • kecagle - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:30 PM EST
It also might help them find out early if the career is not meant for them so they can put their time and attention elsewhere. #ycsdchat
    In reply to @MsInsley
  • hball1025 Nov 7 @ 8:30 PM EST
A3--career exploration should begin early--career days/shadowing, some schools incorporate career clusters/academies, career & college counseling and fairs, robust curriculum with trades electives & advanced/AP/DE course offerings. #ycsdchat
  • madams_va Nov 7 @ 8:31 PM EST
A3 Providing and encouraging unique opportunities #ycsdchat

A3: I agree with April and Stephanie, having a mentor to answer questions and getting to them early can help guide our students to greater opportunities. #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:31 PM EST
I agree. Having the opportunity to explore potential careers and passions too is important for our young people. #ycsdchat
    In reply to @MrsSMBean
  • jmu_teacher Nov 7 @ 8:32 PM EST
A2: Encouraging students to take risks, work together, and use questioning! Encourage students to ask questions and challenge them with another question rather than always giving them answers #ycsdchat
  • MarleneRiccio Nov 7 @ 8:33 PM EST
Q3: we also need to remember that changing careers is the new normal. #ycsdchat
  • REEdelstein Nov 7 @ 8:33 PM EST
A3: I think we need to do a better job of letting college bound students know what their options are, especially if those options exist in their community. #ycsdchat
  • drjaimemiller Nov 7 @ 8:34 PM EST
A3 #ycsdchat As a college prof, I get a unique opportunity to see what skills ss donā€™t bring to college: notetaking that isnā€™t copying from a ppt, essay writing&documentation, reading&underlining in texts, and studying for exams/test. I introduced my sophs to blue books and APA.
  • MsInsley - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:35 PM EST
    #ycsdchat
    • coaty_lisa Nov 7 @ 8:34 PM EST
A3: I agree with @MsInsley I had the opportunity to explore potential careers/related opportunities at a young age. It made deciding on what was a hobby and what could be a career easier. Also having encouragement from other adults in my life.
  • JessicaPelofske Nov 7 @ 8:35 PM EST
Q3. I think having them find out what they are even interested in, then researching jobs that would cater to that #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Nov 7 @ 8:36 PM EST
Yes-The average adult now moves jobs 10-15 times now...vastly different from the world of yesterday where was the norm to remain in one spot for 30 years #ycsdchat
    In reply to @MarleneRiccio
  • hball1025 Nov 7 @ 8:37 PM EST
Absolutely and helping them understand the requirements they will need to meet to secure those placements #ycsdchat
    In reply to @REEdelstein
  • kecagle - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:38 PM EST
This is a great point! I have had 3 careers, no where near 10-15. What about everyone else? #ycsdchat

    In reply to @hball1025, @MarleneRiccio
  • MsInsley - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:40 PM EST
Two if you count the switch from classroom teacher to library (which I believe counts because it definitely requires a different set of skills) #ycsdchat
    In reply to @kecagle
  • coaty_lisa Nov 7 @ 8:40 PM EST
#ycsdchat I have been a teacher my whole working career (12 years) but at one point I did explore the possibility of going into something art/graphic related. Now I just use art in the classroom.
    In reply to @kecagle

I have been a teacher since I graduated from college. #ycsdchat

  • drjaimemiller Nov 7 @ 8:47 PM EST
A4 #ycsdchat We do a lot of writing and rhetorical analysis. These skills are hugely important for students. It gives them heuristics to ā€œseeā€ deeper into all kinds of rhetorical situations. That kind of knowledge&awareness is invaluable. Likewise, teaching linguistics is crucial
  • wallaceteaching Nov 7 @ 8:47 PM EST
A4 great team building lesson by @BaldwinTeach to prepare students to work on a project making scenery for drama; included clues, competition, and collaboration #ycsdchat

  • MrsSMBean Nov 7 @ 8:49 PM EST
A4: I regularly ask students to work with small groups to formulate answers and opinions and then share our both orally and in writing. With all of our ā€œtechnologyā€ in use by young people, being a strong, academic writer has suffered. #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:50 PM EST

  • hball1025 Nov 7 @ 8:51 PM EST

  • MsZabicki Nov 7 @ 8:56 PM EST
A4: K is a mixture of many things, but mostly oral communication. They work together in groups constantly, we talk about curriculum, feelings, problems, etc. I teach my students to be personally accountable for their work/learning! They get it at 5-6!! #ycsdchat
  • eobrien22 Nov 7 @ 8:57 PM EST
It concerns me that we have such an emphasis on getting students to think about college. We should value alternative types of education:community college, trade schools, etc. I'm always amazed at the opportunities at New Horizons. We should celebrate this more. #ycsdchat
  • coaty_lisa Nov 7 @ 8:57 PM EST
