Rian here! High School #SpecialEducator! English 10 Team Lead! Kindness is asking someone how their day is going- and listening when they say no it's not going well. #mdeschat
Erica, elementary school counselor, and first time participating in #mdeschat! To me, kindness is the ability to show empathy and compassion to others.

A1: Kindness is important in our schools and classrooms because those spaces help students learn through practice and modeling how to express empathy and compassion. #mdeschat
A2 Every student gets a greeting. Even if you are late, I’m glad you made it. If I have something you need, you can have it. Pencil, snack, etc. #mdeschat
A2- Starts at classroom entry, and carries over throughout the day. When you set the tone, Ss rise to the expectation. If I want my Ss to express kindness, I have to show kindness myself. Have to establish collaborative expectations of one another. Builds Ss buy-in. #mdeschat
In HS, I stand at the door a greet S with, "I am glad your hear today!/It is nice to see you today!". In ELE, our morning meeting consisted of the same greeting to one another. #mdeschat
A2. Ts need to start by modeling expected behaviors, allowing students to practice these behaviors and celebrate them. It has to become part of a culture #mdeschat
High fives, handshakes, and hugs are important. I added a chest bump in honor of a birthday and almost experienced Code 10 administrator down. #mdeschat
A3 Sharing acts of kindness I see during the day. I use Dojo and have points for “Showing kindness” and “Helping others." I recognize that as often as I can! #mdeschat
A3- Be 'extra' kind to them! Create kindness challenges with goals and checklists to include acts of kindness at home and school. Also, send home a list of books and resources used in the classrooms to explain kindness. #mdeschat
A3. Motivate Ss to share kindness at home and ask parents to practice it with them, send intentional homework such as: "Reflect on an act of kindness today" #mdeschat
A4. Community building circles, morning meeting, daily announcements, lots of modeling, service learning, pairing younger & older students together #mdeschat
A4- I think Bonnie mentioned this earlier, but I always enjoy the “caught being good” initiative. Gets Ss to have that kind mindset. Contagious. #mdeschat
Incorporate Kindness through citizenship through PBIS. Reward kindness at school-wide events. Hang quotes about kindness in the building. Principal holds Kindness Corner Lunch Chats #mdeschat
A4: By teaching students to listen to one another. When we teach them to care enough to listen, we’re teaching them how to be kind and empathetic. #mdeschat
