#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
I believe that the problems of our time (innovation, social justice, interpersonal) depend on creative thinkers-people who develop new ideas that have value. I also believe that authentic creativity is activated by the WONDER CYCLE @GlimmerGuy#K12ArtChat
Wonder is a state of suspended disbelief. It is when we don’t quite know what we are experiencing. It is when we are open to new ideas, new understandings. It lasts for a few seconds. You might even make “the wonder face” eyes wide and mouth agape.#K12ArtChat
#k12artchat Q1 I experience wonder when I see my students design, plan, explore, and create beyond my expectations. So much growth and confidence. Happy Art Teacher!
Wonder is almost immediately followed by curiosity.
Curiosity is the insatiable desire to explore, know about, or understand something.
Curiosity activated is questioning.

A1 Artist Sean Foley thinks about Wonder as something that can manifest through a variety of experiences (beauty, sublime, fantastic, terrible, abject, marvelous) EG: close encounter w/road kill or ants swarming a banana. #K12ArtChathttps://t.co/5mc9Rkqlgb
A1: I experience wonder while learning and experiencing new things. But the best place to experience wonder, in front of work by my favorite artists #k12artchat
A!: I noticed a lot of ppl saying they experience wonder when working with children. I do as well. But, also when I see a work of any interesting work of art for the first time or when I see one I am familiar with in real-life for the first time. Takes my breath away #K12ArtChat
A1 I experience wonder when I’m searching for fuel to inspire learning, growing as a parent, teacher, person. For me, if life becomes stagnate wonder soon follows. #K12ArtChat
A2: We have to slow. down. and. notice. it. Making ourselves aware of the world around us and see things from different perspectives. This is something we MUST help our students learn as well. #K12ArtChat
A2 We have to slow down. This is so hard for me, but I work on it constantly. We can't be distracted and in a hurry to experience wonder. So, we have to do the opposite of those. Be intentional about it! #K12ArtChat
A2: Part of a new curriculum in our district stresses the focus on "noticings" & "wonderings" and I have made that a part of my daily conversations with learners. Sometimes I have to call it out to be mindful of it. #K12ArtChat
A2: After listening to @BreneBrown book abt "Power of Vulnerability”, we can be more attune, by being more open and honest w/ self & others. #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A3 Wonder sounds and looks like - peers listening to peers presenting their discoveries, experiments, concepts, and connections to the world through art. Power in sharing your knowledge.
#K12ArtChat a2 we need to slow down and appreciate , acknowledge , and reflect on those moments. Sometimes we get too busy and fail to be truly present
A3 My mentor George Szekely believes art rooms are discovery zones. He champions the element of surprise, like pulling back a blanket to reveal a tableful of vintage pull toys or... #K12ArtChathttps://t.co/9FmmFf2Djg
A2 slowing down for sure. Taking time to feel learning. Wonder is a feeling that embraces you. Our world is obsessed w/speed. We need time to reflect, connect and see where wonder takes us. #K12ArtChat
Alice here from Boston for just a few more minutes 🌸 A2 A really great way to be attuned to Wonder is by engaging in #systemsthinking How does something work? How do others things relate to it? Was would happen if? etc #k12artchat
Q6: the more questions Ss construct, the more they are on the path to seeking answers. I drive Ss to dream & imagine possible solutions to the questions they have. Finding solutions that best fit what Ss wish to see in the world not the world as it is. #K12ArtChat
A3: Wonder seems to make a "buzz" in the art room - you can feel it, see it and hear it. It looks like students learning by experimenting. It sounds like lightbulb moments, discoveries and "ohhh ahh!" moments! #K12ArtChat
How to keep your art students engaged the last 3 weeks of school: CHOICE! Lots of choice! We are working on anything from digital art to charcoal drawings. It may be chaos, but the students LOVE it. #STEAMlearns#k12artchat#arteducation
A1 Wonder is when I make that face, you know the one.
My students are forever effecting my sense of wonder. When I least expect it one of them will do something so unexpected that it takes my breath away.#K12ArtChat
So important. I’ll give Ss time to play & experiment. I want them to build creative confidence to them move towards creating to express understanding of self, others and the world. #k12artchat
It is really non-threathing way to get Ss to discus their view point and know that now one is right or wrong. just hearing each other out and know being more accepting. #K12ArtChat
A4 Take aparts a la the Thinking Routines of @AgencybyDesign incite great Wonder ... how it works, what does it do, can we alter it, how is it made, how can we make it more beautiful, efficient, effective, ethical, etc #k12artchat
A4 I try and provide a safe space for Ss to wonder about the world and their place in it. Through the 8 cultural forces & @columbusmuseum thinking like an artist , etc. I try and create the conditions for creative minds to wonder. @RonRitchhart@ProjectZeroHGSE#K12ArtChat
A5 I run a 100% choice art room so students are totally encouraged to follow, explore and find their curiosity. My class model is based if the writing workshop model. Works really well. #K12ArtChat
A2.I'm always inspired by visits to galleries and museums. In June I collaborated with two colleagues and created a professional academy field trip for our art department. It included some time to #pleinairpaint, We couldn't stop talking about how inspiring it was. #K12ArtChat
A5: This Summer I Co-taught Summer Art Program to middle school, creating abstract creatures, then tried to recreate them using @tinybop creature Garden app to test out how they might move & see if they moved well! #K12ArtChat (Small groups of 3)
#k12artchat A6 Questions on my students artist proposals dive into the "why" so they can clarity their own "voice" and explore methods to achieve their identified artistic goals. #ChoiceArt
#K12ArtChat a5 I miss the curiosity of elementary level - I sometimes have trouble getting teens to share their curiosity . I find they are more open in small groups or on social media like IG
A6 Focus on the generative questions:
Why?
Helps us understand the world, and to investigate assumptions about it
What if?
Helps us imagine possibilities, push our curiosities, and empathize
How?
Helps us start solving a problem, manifesting an idea
#K12ArtChat
A4 Helping students to enter into artworks, dig deep and make connections is how I encourage wonder. Entering artworks thru mood and using these Access Lenses to explore and discuss artworks works well for all students. #K12ArtChat
A5 trying to work on getting Ss to be each other’s champion. I want Ss to encourage & support creativity amongst themselves. Ss to Ss encouragement means more as they grow older than Ts to Ss. IMHO #K12ArtChat
A6 talking to Ss about creating from a place of passion not conformity or compliance. Ss questions today, can creativity get you in trouble, are teachers always helpful? Are Ss supposed to be perfect? Very thoughtful conversation around these coming soon. #K12ArtChat
