Good morning ! Debby from NY.
good morning! yesterday wasn't the same without you
I wonder if that was my problem yesterday?
Morning, ! Great topic today, !
Hi, Ellen! Chilly out there, isn't it?!
I'm all about evidence....what proof do you have to say Ss "need" to do something a certain way?
Good Morning - missed yesterday because tweetdeck wouldn't open - happy it opened today! Glad to be here! Tim from Lansing MI
That is exactly what i was thinking! https://t.co/LGax3iPHbS
I'm all about evidence....what proof do you have to say Ss "need" to do something a certain way?
OK, who broke Twitter yesterday??? Good to c everyone again! David MS Principal form VA, waiting on Snowgeddon in a few days.
Nice...I was hoping for a snow day yesterday. Enjoy the time. We need those unexpected gifts this time of year.
Teaching social skills: independence, organisation, how to catch train are important but often put down as taking time from content
Hey there and morning, all. Abner from the DC area. Girding ourselves for epic snow this Fri/Sat. We will see what really falls!
good morning- psyched to start this day'
Exactly. For me its all about critical thinking. If I can tell my students thought the hows and whys. Im good.
You're here and not at the grocery store buying milk, eggs, and bread?!?! https://t.co/3pwMiROBqh

But don't colleges/employers want people who can problem solve and think?
I once had a T tell me that the most important thing to teach Ss to get ready for her grade was how to set up their paper.
living and being a force for good in society including resistance to injustice
Good morning! was slow goings yesterday. Glad to be back!
We run into this topic a lot as a private college-prep school. Usually it's testing and AP level classes that we have to consider
Yup. There are many "needs" out there. Bring me the data and we'll talk.
Oh 'cause we use that sooooo much in the real world.
please tell me that this was a while ago...not that it was right then... https://t.co/OHuMe6vCQx
I once had a T tell me that the most important thing to teach Ss to get ready for her grade was how to set up their paper.
If "doing it this way" = they are collaborating, thinking critically, innovating, creating...then ok. Otherwise, time for a change.
Good morning ! Julia here, checking in from Dublin. Hope everyone is having a great morning! :)
Guess who I saw at Disney? I hope one of your favorite Tigers:)
It was a while ago..15 years or so
We all play that game. Curricula tells us to do something in a way we think sucks. Creative noncompliance is the answer.
Took care of all the necessities yesterday, including some "beverages" to keep cold in the snow
I agree!!! https://t.co/YIrdrBWPqo
If "doing it this way" = they are collaborating, thinking critically, innovating, creating...then ok. Otherwise, time for a change.
Definitely, Ben. https://t.co/IWec3sS9HF

Some don't see that social skills help Ss cope with future years or employment and have better strategies
Good morning everybody! Feel better about the world that Twitter is back up ;)
nice shirt. Good morning sir.
21stC skills found in Australian Curriculum via National Declaration on Educational Goals of Young People https://t.co/KfMYvsUCpk
Yes! Not regurgitate facts that can just be Googled!
Eeks! Colleges/employers never ask for students who can regurgitate in my experience! Thinkers: now there's an idea :)
Hi, Pen Pal:) Great to see you!
If Ss are thinking in a different way than they're use to - then they're "doing it the right way"
Mind if I "Borrow" that phrase? Love "creative noncompliance"!
If they can't catch the train to get to school on time they're already behind. Life skills come first IMHO. https://t.co/goUtb9Yu4F
Teaching social skills: independence, organisation, how to catch train are important but often put down as taking time from content
The greatest quote ever..we need to prepare Ss for jobs not invented yet. We need to teach Ss how to think and find answers.
sometimes I just say, "that's always an option"
Whaaat?! No way! Did you put him in your suitcase and bring him back as a souvenir?? 😉
Good morning ! Carla from Sto Dgo. Yesterday made me face up to the extent of my addiction :)
Good morning . Brian from Mass., glad Twitter is back on its A game this morning.
want to model 4 Ss "I love to sail forbidden seas, and land on barbarous coasts." Herman Melville
Ss learn differently. They process info. differently and display product in various ways. Up to us to tap into learning style.
...I know they need to learn it that way but let's see what happens if we challenge them this way.
We need to meet Ss where they're at, but also need to align our teaching to connect w/ skills they need for the future- BALANCE
This is, for me anyway, is the key to today's topic...why changed careers to teach in the first place. https://t.co/qHrQuHF5mQ
I tell my Ss - especially in math - that there is another way to arrive at the answer - gets them thinking differently
Empower Ts to teach the standards in more creative and engaging ways! https://t.co/nb1G5raZXL
We all play that game. Curricula tells us to do something in a way we think sucks. Creative noncompliance is the answer.
Hi all! Saying good morning and then back to the grind! Don't forget it's . Post a pic of what you're reading!
We need to remember that almost everyone in Ed is well-intentioned. That doesn't mean they are right or have the only answer.
I find it tough to “stick to my guns” sometimes, but I value authentic learning over standardized learning in my classroom.
Love the topic! Always interesting to think about who exactly is determining what Ss "SHOULD" be doing in college and how...
If they don't learn social skills when we have them, how will they be able to cope/get along with others as adults?
Facts are not what teaching is about. Skills are much more important https://t.co/j92tx5MbNA
Yes! Not regurgitate facts that can just be Googled!
Morning Ellen! Our letters should arrive soon 😊
Good Wednesday morning ! In response to our Q this morning...We need to live in the 'here & now' & engage in responsive pedagogy.
I struggle with the college readiness. First graders should be able to develop at their own pace. I want them to love learning.
. Hello? Can you hear me? Hello from the Jersey Shore....a little s/o to Adele this morning! Glad to see we are connecting today!
Angela from Michigan saying a long overdue hello to the crew. What? Shirts? So jelly over here. ;) They look great.
Give a student confidence and so much more will develop https://t.co/KlMwNjWABa
If they can't catch the train to get to school on time they're already behind. Life skills come first IMHO. https://t.co/goUtb9Yu4F

What's? Headed out there this weekend 2serve on equity panel. Thanks for heads up abt sno. https://t.co/In7SSbMFhh
Hey there and morning, all. Abner from the DC area. Girding ourselves for epic snow this Fri/Sat. We will see what really falls!
I am fantastic thank you. We may get an inch of snow so school has been called off here in TN
Exactly. Standards shouldn’t be a or recipe. https://t.co/ry90s2rg4d
Empower Ts to teach the standards in more creative and engaging ways! https://t.co/nb1G5raZXL
We all play that game. Curricula tells us to do something in a way we think sucks. Creative noncompliance is the answer.
The "5 Why" strategy is great for getting to the heart of any issue. WHY do Ss really need...? https://t.co/uh86hH61pM
Those "some" need to get out more, in my opinion.
Yes, it's about developing a set of skills that can be used & honed & expanded as life goes on.
Good morning - running behind, my morning companion was staging a protest a/b going outside https://t.co/TqznUxU8Wq
Great emphasis on college and career readiness in high school. Can't ignore the next adventure!
Good morning friends. Steve from NJ saying hello. Can't seem to make the time of the chat work lately. Need to change that!
Hi Greg! How are you? Love that you met at FETC! Isn't she great?
Exactly. This is a really important part of our job. To develop the person. https://t.co/TPMm5SGB00
If they don't learn social skills when we have them, how will they be able to cope/get along with others as adults?
we need to allow Ss to take ownership- to break boundaries- to be a driving force in their own education
Maybe this is why "adulting" is such a big deal & stressful for young adults. They only know one way to do it.
YES! https://t.co/VW0kpYF7ed
Yes, it's about developing a set of skills that can be used & honed & expanded as life goes on.
or passionate and committed :)
Teaching towards 2025, not 1975.
Yeh but those "some" have far too much to say unfortunately
This is an issue when Ss transition from elementary to middle and middle to high, not just to college! https://t.co/ZUeNPt4umQ
Love the topic! Always interesting to think about who exactly is determining what Ss "SHOULD" be doing in college and how...
Bottom line, always remain professional and open-minded when discussing Ss curricular needs. There's conflicting data out there.
Extremely important to let Ss at every age to try to develop another way to do things https://t.co/0PKWfU6Ap5
Maybe this is why "adulting" is such a big deal & stressful for young adults. They only know one way to do it.
absolutely! Couldn't agree with you more
yep. Students can and should be content creators in autonomous ways.
Gonna be kinda ugly, Diane. Remember: This is clueless-with-the-snow DC area. Not Green Bay. :)
We cant have a platonic notion of Ed. Not everyone learns the same thing the same way. Schools aren't great at recognizing that.
I struggle with the biggest social and thinking skill teacher (play) has been virtually eliminated from Kindergarten.
well she's no Julia or but yes it was fun.
Instead of "We are preparing students for next year" we focus on "What do our students need, right now, to best learn and engage?"
Hi gang Eric in cool NJ late today
In 12 years I've found that there are no absolutes - one of the best things we can teach is to be flexible in thoughts/actions
Another question is how to we build buy in from teachers who still have this mindset? How do we support learning and growth?
Right! There is a big difference between teaching curriculum to build skills and just teaching curriculum.
When I finished school in 20thC Computer Programers / Engineers did BScience or BEng. IT degrees didn't exist then.1/2
agreed but most Ts are !! have to go out and around the box for Ss https://t.co/J18DcKZgze
We cant have a platonic notion of Ed. Not everyone learns the same thing the same way. Schools aren't great at recognizing that.
So true! Are we setting kids up for success in the next level, while also thinking critically abt whether it's a good way.
I am a learner by doing. I always keep this in mind with my Ss. We have to provide various modes when introducing content.
That's great! https://t.co/x8WOkMmeiu
Instead of "We are preparing students for next year" we focus on "What do our students need, right now, to best learn and engage?"
Different students need different instruction.
this is a question I fight with everyday. Im starting to wodner if i should just leave them alone and hope they follow.
Employers r waiting for kids who have those "soft" skills, can think for themselves&prob solve
so many ways to arrive at the same destination. And sometimes the journey can be more engaging
"If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten." --Tony Robbins
Good Morning ! I'm 9 minutes late but I MADE it in 2016!!
Haha we will all have to hang out at the next ISTE BFC party :)
Precisely https://t.co/5z7ig0EAs0
Employers r waiting for kids who have those "soft" skills, can think for themselves&prob solve
Relationships and knowledge about the learners in front of you should be guiding your approach - not a way but many ways
And that's the only way they'll care about learning. No one wants to be force fed. https://t.co/sKZGxUXzSP
we need to allow Ss to take ownership- to break boundaries- to be a driving force in their own education
I struggle when things that must be done are dictated by someone who hasn't been in the classroom.
I want to share w Ss how what we're doing helps them right now - and even better if they can articulate it themselves
Likewise in 21stC as a Careers Adviser I have explained degrees in Nanotechnology, Neuroscience, Mechatronics, etc 2/2
Good morning- a little late today.
I believe the journey is generally more valuable than the final outcome or destination. https://t.co/nTL5D8ZlCF
so many ways to arrive at the same destination. And sometimes the journey can be more engaging
and if college is even the correct choice for that Ss it's not for everyone need https://t.co/Wjj30hVDRF
So true! Are we setting kids up for success in the next level, while also thinking critically abt whether it's a good way.
When I give my Ss a "few minutes" & some of them discover a new way to arrive at an answer they get excited! https://t.co/NGuPjlGDTt
so many ways to arrive at the same destination. And sometimes the journey can be more engaging
Good morning Steve! How are ya?
& yet we test kids&schools like they r all the same. Sheesh
Prepare students for future but also meet their developmental/learning needs now, so they are ready...and can then excel.
Is our job to prepare Ss for what we think needed or train up from where are? 1 is easier/more practical https://t.co/zJOjOC9pkH
It's hard advice to follow but I do believe we need to help kids experience TODAY in order to prep them for tomorrow
Good morning East Coast friends. Can't join today, but wanted to say hello. Enjoy the day!
every child is different and we need to respect, celebrate and honor those differences!
We must help our Ss become agile learners who see real world problem solving is connected to their learning.
That's true--same applies with when we are teaching Ss how to be successful in the "professional world"
I love for so many reasons. One is Ss decide what to learn and how to learn it, just like real life.
yes they often need a "buy in " as to the relevancy of what we are teaching https://t.co/3Ej7D9zVSc
I want to share w Ss how what we're doing helps them right now - and even better if they can articulate it themselves
Many roads must be traveled to meet the diverse needs of our students. There is not just one way.
Reply: Determine if this is: only way, my way, best of possible ways, path of least resistance, or one of valid ways
At a lower level, I hear primary teachers complain that they are under pressure from high school to teach content rather than skills
Relationship building comes Into play here as well. Get to know your Ss..positive classroom culture...risk taking environment.
Yes! That's the same tool we used in industry for failure analysis. Put the same tools in the hands of Ss = success!
Great question. Buy in is important for change, not just putting on an act when someone's observing https://t.co/PS2R5w12HT
Another question is how to we build buy in from teachers who still have this mindset? How do we support learning and growth?
I totally agree!! There needs to be a 'curriculum' for those social skills to make sure it's taught!
In Sydney Catholic Schools this is critical.
Need to answer the all-important question...WHY? Shouldn't the T response be tied to identified S learning needs?
Giving students independence is a big thing for setting them up for adult success, but wasn't done well at the HS in my district.
But they still need the ACT cut score for higher Ed don't they? https://t.co/xJAWRaaziw
we need to allow Ss to take ownership- to break boundaries- to be a driving force in their own education
I think it goes beyond testing. Hire teachers who KNOW their content. Write curricula that respects that.
That's a great way to look at it - if we keep looking at next year they'll never be ready
That's why I do as many obs in a year as possible and none are announced or scheduled - authentic teaching and learning
We may still be BORN TO RUN, but in a direction of progress and enlightenment.
Sometimes might be true-- I tell my 8th graders that they will have advantage in HS if they are better searchers, digitally literate
Amen! https://t.co/DQAGPTvajg
I struggle when things that must be done are dictated by someone who hasn't been in the classroom.
agreed. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, more important than building relationships with our students.
Need to teach the whole child & not just prepare them for an outdated misunderstanding of what we thought they needed for college.
. Need kids to think - instead of "taking notes", I give them a topic and make them find info themselves. Then we regroup, share.
hard for me to connect the dots when I'm told how something will help me 5, 10, 20 yrs from now - work from that POV
That is so interesting! I would've assumed the primary grades were pressured to focus on those foundational skills
like in history class teaching the cause & effect events today shape tomorrow https://t.co/9WMZ0SluNx
It's hard advice to follow but I do believe we need to help kids experience TODAY in order to prep them for tomorrow
Very true! It's not a mindset that can just be turned on. It takes lots of time to grow.
I keep wondering about the pressures educators feel connected to Ss performance on tests- and how this connects to our topic
yes! Long gone are the days for the tried and true. Just like w/ our Ss our Ts need 2 think and teach differently .
Let the learners lead their own learner. We are their to facilitate this process. https://t.co/XkpdO3Jjps
we need to allow Ss to take ownership- to break boundaries- to be a driving force in their own education
there is so much more than income and work. How can it be reduced to one thing?
I was on a Yr 9 program that included these skills. Constantly fought those who said it interfered with later learning
Yes, learning can't just be about knowledge for a test/grade. Meaningful learning is applied to real world https://t.co/MpsxXC8BAc
We must help our Ss become agile learners who see real world problem solving is connected to their learning.
scooped my boy up and carried him out, only way it was happening. And yeah! It's chilly (and windy, too)
Agrees but we disrespect the learning process of ind kids when we rely on testing to evaluate them (&Ts2)
I think those experiences we expose them too learning, failure, success, happiness, etc are the most important
