Its FRIDAY family! How do public speaking skills and discussion strategies fit into your classroom? Any creative lessons?
I thought yesterday too. That way I'm ready to Talk Like a Pirate today!
Tired this morning, up late last night and awake at 4 😣
I love the ISH! part.. have you read book Ish? it is just fabulous.
Tech Writing Ss practice public speaking via short videos. Used first week. https://t.co/gOECWWO486
Its FRIDAY family! How do public speaking skills and discussion strategies fit into your classroom? Any creative lessons?
Met with so many wonderful parents of my students last evening during our school's BBQ social!
I'm doing Talk Like a Pirate on Monday. I thought it was the 19th? LOL
I used to have my kids do speeches on school rules that they think should change. That was maybe my favorite unit.
Good morning . Stacey from NJ. Ready for a weekend of soccer!
On occasion I blow up the plans, have Ss research Qs we haven't answered & do informal oral reports.

Wait what is talk like a pirate? Idk about this..
Happy Friday
Brian, HS principal from Massachusetts
A: I have found that Green Screen has been awesome for public speaking. The kids do PSAs all of the time.
Today's improv lesson should help Ss become more comfortable w discussion & public speaking.
Yup. I slept to my alarm for the first time today. Cant imagine being new though.
A: We also share our reading in front of one another to practice our fluency and expression. Gets them ready for next steps.
We keep an "I Wonder" Wall of those Qs we don't have the time / opty to stop and answer. Great Friday activity.
Hey all! Coffee in hand and ready to face this day! Plus it's Friday! Yay!
yes Larissa's bite is out and she is not getting grass efficiently
My Ss do small group presentations for each unit. Group work & discussions are a challenge for 10& 11 graders
Argh! You're right matey! My calendar off this week...but now I can plan even more!
First 2 weeks I slept better for some reason. Stress is catching up to me I guess. https://t.co/nvxPw04RS4
Yup. I slept to my alarm for the first time today. Cant imagine being new though.
This is an area that I am working on, so I'll be lurking today.
Public speaking soooooo important for an administrator. You communicate the vision and culture of the school.
The reality of the stress and what has to be done sets in.
Good morning ! Steve from NJ. A bit tired after back to school night while still trying to get back to 100% after being sick.
Interviewing Ss like talk show guests. Introduces them to public speaking abt subject they know best, themselves
Can you explain this to me please! :)
I always thought Morning Meeting was a great way to ease into public speaking. https://t.co/bNxeXOyAnK
Its FRIDAY family! How do public speaking skills and discussion strategies fit into your classroom? Any creative lessons?
Hopefully the weekend helps, Steve.
I've had book talks and genius hour presentations. Always trying to get public speaking in somehow.
Just ordered Water Princess
My Ss often are afraid of speaking,I don't push them but encourage small group speaking. Also had them record a talk on voxer for me
I have. Get their daily email too. Going to build that into my ELA centers. Self-choice reading / writing.
Public Speaking should be a prerequisite for all teachers and administrators. Great for students too. https://t.co/xF5XZe0hsq

Thought about this yesterday. Language vs Action as an administrator. What do the teachers and kids pay attention to?
Yes! So true https://t.co/oxP4Xq1eAv
I always thought Morning Meeting was a great way to ease into public speaking. https://t.co/bNxeXOyAnK

I'm exploring Morning Meeting, when my Ss speak to our whole class about things meaningful to them...good beginning to p.s.!
I also often suggest Science News For Kid online
I think that's what we have , Jasper. Techquity in access.
https://t.co/EI8jYBtfV3
Imagine a school environment where students could gain web access much like when visiting a coffee shop or airport.
I teach specific skills before expecting Ss to present: voice projection, clarity, awareness of audience, etc.
Good morning! I'm putting together my poetry circle groups so late to the aparkchat! TG for Google Forms! TGIF!
Nice moon, David. Glad you could share your evening with us.
yes do I as do NOT do what I say
I read this quickly and I thought it said fried banana muffins. I was like WHAT?!
Good morning and LOVE this!
I find Debating skills empowers S's to be critical thinkers. Matter, Method, Manner.
I have not try's green screen yet, looking forward to it. Do you use special equipment ?
Is it a Canadian holiday?
Hopefully no disconnect between words and action.
Beautiful! I'll be sharing mine on Monday-we didn't quite finish.
What a nice thing to have! A BBQ social! https://t.co/3UMf6avgVF
Met with so many wonderful parents of my students last evening during our school's BBQ social!
Haha! Me too!!! https://t.co/g2jOJUtjgO
I read this quickly and I thought it said fried banana muffins. I was like WHAT?!
I love this format as a safe place to practice sharing and speaking.
For sports fans its Elimination Final night in this town.
Anytime you can get the kids defending an idea out loud, I think you are teaching public speaking.
Rec soccer. They are in 4th and 6th grades.
hahaha Big E is starts today Christina, that is what we were thinking lol
You people are with me every day! I should start mail orders though...hmmmm.
Yes! Debating is hard but so much fun for Ss https://t.co/1vfztMM1EG
I find Debating skills empowers S's to be critical thinkers. Matter, Method, Manner.
what a great idea for a "sponge activity"
Good morning! That's awesome!
enjoy.
Our season has just finished
Professional passion engages stakeholders. Make them WANT to listen rather than be compliant. https://t.co/Ffu57dGLHa
Thought about this yesterday. Language vs Action as an administrator. What do the teachers and kids pay attention to?
Last year some Ss used Voki in slides to help w/ presentation. Ss who were too shy for whole class used Voki to speak for them
ok, Manny. How about you? We need to do a hangout or chatty via Voxer re your 1:1. Share ideas.
Truth! https://t.co/PomtGM6erO
Anytime you can get the kids defending an idea out loud, I think you are teaching public speaking.
Good evening and that's another great picture!
had SS rewrite the Gettysburg Address in modern language. They would only read it aloud if I got a podium & period hats ( I did )
good morning - jumping in late and trying to catch up. Need a jolt of your this morning
Learning to take turns in speaking is a great skill to have
Every High School in Sydney Catholic Schools system is 1:1wifi access even playing fields
We share whenever we can. The other day Ss debated things that move, push/pull while making collages.
So tired I'm giddy! Last day of the book fair!
Happy Friday!! Ready to end my week by finishing off the first round of testing.
So fortunate to always feel comfortable speaking in front of , even as a high schooler; know that it's not that easy for all
hangouts are more my speed. we just did our 1:1 rollout last week. Im feeling positive.
So true. The classroom is a safe way to let them dabble in public speaking. https://t.co/zsmLfkbhaT
Anytime you can get the kids defending an idea out loud, I think you are teaching public speaking.
Yes! And I think this is a VERY important skill!
For the primary grades I love the speaking feature in and in EDU. Easy peasy.
You must be tired. Book fairs are crazy busy!
To ease public speaking anxiety I have Ss present in groups. One speaks at time, but having all eyes not staring at just them helps
We practice listening skills during lunch bunch. Amazing how many Ss no longer eat as families https://t.co/Pjdh3tAOpi
Learning to take turns in speaking is a great skill to have
Still struggle with asking to speak in front of peers, but I know it's a critical skill
Totally excited about school-wide interdisciplinary day -- ALL day -- based on our summer reading title.
Spring poetry unit starts w/Ss reading favorite song lyrics w/ the emotion the hear / feel in the words.
I agree that we need to explicit teach our Ss the skills to be able to be successful when speaking publicly...let's not 'assume'.
Love these and animoto and goanimate for shy Ss https://t.co/NEBuRaeWdU
Last year some Ss used Voki in slides to help w/ presentation. Ss who were too shy for whole class used Voki to speak for them
Fun!! This would get Ss interested! https://t.co/3oBLdWbz13
had SS rewrite the Gettysburg Address in modern language. They would only read it aloud if I got a podium & period hats ( I did )
I'll be happy when pre-assessments are done too. Then we can get down to business/fun!
I also like that is a great way to model certain norms and expectations (eye contact, clapping, etc.)
Taught ELA. not enough speech in the curriculum in my opinion. Maybe it should be a HS elective.
Discussion strategies need to be explicitly taught and modeled. Definitely time invested not lost. Deep discussion = deep learning
The 8th graders propose places in town for a rec club, invite Mayor in to hear presentations and ask questions. Great audience!
I took public speaking in high school waaaayyyy back when
I'm getting over it too. Usually this doesn't happen till Halloween for me. Feel better :)
I see a lot of open discussion especially around scholastic news or read alouds.
We go until November. There are other opportunities to play longer, but my boys aren't that serious about it.
I had a poetry slam on school stage one year. https://t.co/5Gmu0Z48Hl
Spring poetry unit starts w/Ss reading favorite song lyrics w/ the emotion the hear / feel in the words.
We have a public speaking elective. Always runs.
We created a student PBIS committee- classroom reps participate in a lesson w/ me and bring it back to their classmates
I never a had a formal pub speaking / oral presentation class until Freshman yr of college. Just wrong!
would the kids who are uncomfortable with public speaking actually elect that?
They had fun doing it. I hated that we had to move on to other stuff:)
I speak in front of crowds often, but i still get crazy nervous and dont always get to my point.
Love this idea! https://t.co/8wnrjOidfJ
Spring poetry unit starts w/Ss reading favorite song lyrics w/ the emotion the hear / feel in the words.
Good morning Marifran! Happy Friday!
Thanks, we had a good time doing it.
The Question Formulation Technique teaches students to ask questions - key component of a rich discussion
Maybe. or maybe it isnt just speech. Maybe the class is speech and discourse.
Me too. I even struggle with Parent Orientation. Little people I am okay with. Big people make me nervous.
Well I have to feed the poochies. Have a great weekend everyone! See you Monday!
Yes! How many times have you seen a rubric for presentation that scored skills Ss never explicitly taught?
The model of small group-student led discussions that Ss have prepped for/have choice in is great for reluctant speakers
I think reminding that we are a in our , and that we support each other helps, but it's still hard
These are life skills & sometimes the explicit instruction is overlooked because "Ss should know..." Teach! https://t.co/8rgKP4cA4n
Discussion strategies need to be explicitly taught and modeled. Definitely time invested not lost. Deep discussion = deep learning
Robust thoughts this morning.
Hoping will share a public speaking page for us.
Have a great weekend !!
Let them record public speach,do it in private, then show the class the recording. It's a good between step and skill to have anyway
I love the work of , and on these skills. Great books!
Sake here. It was a two semester requirement. Ugh.
you're just rusty, Christina, it will get easier! Lol.
Have a great weekend everyone! Rest, relax and rejuvenate. Back at it on Monday!
hah. Yes. A auditorium of 9th graders, i can talk to all day long.
Teaching students how to be an informed speaker and share their ideas is critical. Empowered and informed https://t.co/IwSHIFWI6z
I find Debating skills empowers S's to be critical thinkers. Matter, Method, Manner.
Today's Q also reminds me of importance of teaching Ss the skills to be a good audience. Another assumption we often make.
Yesterday 4 kids decided that paying in pennies was a really great idea! Luckily I had some help rolling them! LOL
Amen! We need to pre-assess for sure, but tough to start the school year with SO much paperwork, etc.
Off to get my "red" on. Spirit wear for the Pep Rally. Have a great weekend, Friends.
Have a great day, Marifran!
Morning Meeting is some times considered fluff, but I wish it would happen in all grades!
what I did with voxer. Not everyone is ever going to speak publicly, why force them, it can create negativity for Ss
Join us now on https://t.co/1TntY0Gtd4
Its FRIDAY family! How do public speaking skills and discussion strategies fit into your classroom? Any creative lessons?
Agreed! Not everybody has the confidence for in front of the class but may have the fluency.
in upspeak culture, questioning takes regular, extended practice - intonation doesnt get you info
I'm trying this year. Ss need time to practice & self assess their speaking. It's a full body/mind task
Thanks Dave! Same to you. What's the weather like in spring?
especially if it is going to show up on a rubric at some point. If it is being assessed it needs to be taught
When I ask Ss to do a presentation, I try to give a little lesson on how to speak in front of ppl. It really helps.
Agreed. The value can and should be placed on what we get out of discussion w/ others & self
thx Ellen (bring on the coffee!)
not sure. I don't think so. DM me.
helps so much with Me asking , "Is anyone going to laugh at me if I make a mistake?" models expectations
I try and help my Ts by running the NWEA for them in the lab. I hate taking away the classroom time.
they did seem to enjo it ! https://t.co/NVqC4tZe3d
Fun!! This would get Ss interested! https://t.co/3oBLdWbz13
had SS rewrite the Gettysburg Address in modern language. They would only read it aloud if I got a podium & period hats ( I did )
Enjoy your Friday! My team is playing in the Rugby League Semi - Final tonight.
Nothing to do w/our topic. Just wanted share my t-shirt for today's dress down. Saw it. Had to have it.
https://t.co/QcgtVtv31R
thanks Kimberly! Did you watch ceremony this week? I got teary, I'll admit it
Happy weekend Hope we can all unplug and get some QT with family and friends. Let's be kind to ourselves!
I'm pushing Dot Day to next week due to book fair. Also Talk Like a Pirate Day. Tough to do fun stuff & ring up books!
Agreed. My District is making a push to put it back in the day at K-5. It's harder in MS and HS.
exactly,if we are preparing them for the "world" not everyone will be doing the same things Value added ed. https://t.co/T66djIezFo
Agreed. The value can and should be placed on what we get out of discussion w/ others & self
No, unfortunately I missed it! Wonder if I could watch it on You Tube?
My time's up. Happy Friday .
. Our school does that in all classes. In 7th and 8th, we call it Circle of Power and Respect (CPR).
in the deep scary depths of what passes for my mind !!! ( and often google!!)
I think discourse should be built into all classes. Important whether you are speaking to one or many.
In June we invite parents in, dress in tie dye, and read poetry to parents during our Poetry Coffeehouse ! Great public speaking.
it is an integral part of building culture in the classroom. Consistent routine, student centered
yes the goal should be to learn to express yourself whether it's to 1 or many
If Ss must speak in front of others, then it is only fair to teach them how to do so. Public speaking is a skill that can be taught.
there are some books on the topic, but best to watch one in action
I teach 6th MS and try to do it as often as I can. Advisory not always long enough, so I do pieces
Catholic school I taught at had forensics. Very cool dramatic speeches that kids in 5th gr and up competed. https://t.co/btrTOctUTP
Taught ELA. not enough speech in the curriculum in my opinion. Maybe it should be a HS elective.
the remarks were so good: was funny and warm; of course brought libs to their feet
Same, but I was proud that I was calm at Back to School Night this year! https://t.co/d8Z9TZEkpY
hah. Yes. A auditorium of 9th graders, i can talk to all day long.
S's research a country, create a presentation and then present. At 1st, they are beyond nervous, but they get so much better.
Definitely on my watch list this weekend! Thanks for sharing!
I did forensics in high school, too...orig oratory & duo interpretation of drama. Loved it! Learned a ton.
I love it! https://t.co/tUIz4jIgpW
In June we invite parents in, dress in tie dye, and read poetry to parents during our Poetry Coffeehouse ! Great public speaking.
I use discussion sticks w different roles for class discussion. Some roles incl questioner, silent listener & devil's advocate 😈
I did that I taught ELA... So much fun and very valuable experience
I assess using a Socratic seminar with emphasis on discussion skills
Happy Friday 👏🏻😄 Caiti from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 can't wait for the weekend!!
We have been doing a lot of sharing in front of the class. Hoping this will prepare Ss for more public speaking activities
Doing lots of collaborative Math tasks including and 👍🏻 students love sharing work with classmates
Running late this morning. Sandi from NJ
Good morning ! Having Gr2/3 coding kids share work to end class
That sounds great! What did that involve?
Good morning CST chatters. Feels a bit brisk on the porch this morning. Happy Friday.
Took it a few minutes ago in an area south of Sydney! Looked absolutely stunning!
It was my fave part of the day. That and read aloud.
I have students create YouTube videos (tutorials, walkthroughs, etc) authentic presentation / communication skills
I think students should be presenting at faculty meetings, conferences, etc. my daughter and I have been co-presenting.
Do students have occasions to speak during class? Are they part of (one, a few, many) conversations? https://t.co/SnSvQ6NgFe
it looks like you provide many great entry points for mathematical discussion
It's important Ss know that the quality if what they have to say us just as important as how they convey it
"Often we mistake fluency for value!" Dr Edward De Bono 'I'm Right! You're Wrong!'
good morning to you too!!
sharing our Math inquiries and sharing their connections to a story we read yesterday.
Exactly! Likewise you can speak eloquently for 30+ minutes yet not say anything of value!
That sounds great! I like how you embed the Maths into the narrative.
Morning, . The more informal speaking, the better: pairs/groups/class/mini debate/60-sec present, etc https://t.co/tv3hqy7X5L
Its FRIDAY family! How do public speaking skills and discussion strategies fit into your classroom? Any creative lessons?

Hypothesis: The more informal speaking one does, the less intimidating formal occasions feel. (Not *not* intimidating, just less.)
In our makerspace, kids share projects (successes and failures) with their peers. Informal at first, then we step it up.
Nice! Public speaking & discussion, they're not just for classroom spaces.
Love Art of Conversation game for getting discussion going in any class. Esp. useful for Spec Ed or ESL. https://t.co/x6Oo1YjKF1
