Welcome to today’s #ldchat! This is Dan with the Understood team. We’re joined today by school principal and Understood expert Brian Stack (@bstackbu) to talk about why self-advocacy matters.
HS/college students often learn best through mentoring, especially with peers. They can practice to actively speak and listen. Non-threatening environment #LDchat
I have a son that has ADHD. I keep telling him that he needs to advocate for himself. But he is only 7 and he's scared of the teacher. She is a little scary to me as an adult. ha! #ldchat

"I feel a sense of accomplishment that I learned to stand up for my rights and for my education no matter the challenge or the situation." #ldchathttps://t.co/ZWp6UNfb7g
A3: For high schoolers, try scheduling 1:1 time with a teacher before school starts, or during study hall, to review material or ask for help. Its usually quiet. #ldchat
I like when students write an intro letter to their new teachers, sharing their areas of struggle and what types of help has made a positive impact in the past. #ldchat
A4: #ldchat communicating needs- "I need a moment to think" "Can I present it in this form?" etc. Also, a chance to contribute to goal development and IEP meetings
Many ways. Survival depends on self awareness, as can target specific needs faster or at all. Resources often don't have the listening skills to work around lack of self awareness. #LDchat A2
