#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
#A1: When presenting an art lesson I have written instructions (verbal), say the instructions verbally (auditory), do a demonstration (visual) and follow up with the students doing a practice (kinesthetic). Then students begin the project. #k12artchat
Hello! I'm Katherine Ryker. I'm a former K12 science teacher (current college professor at the University of SC) looking to learn more from the great K12 art educator community! #K12ArtChat
A1: We include modifications for GT and special needs in our lesson plans. We need to make sure that we have entry points for all learners to find success #K12ArtChat
A1: cooperative learning is big when I teach. I also love to use essential questions that allow Ss flexibility in approaching an artistic problem. #K12ArtChat
A1: our county has been teaching cultural proficiency for the last few years. This year we are focusing on teaching to the root culture, not surface culture. My students often guide us and teach us about their culture, rather than me teaching them . #K12ArtChat
A1 it’s important to be mindful of each students individual needs- modify materials, tools, approaches accordingly. Also, provide meaningful opportunities for inclusion with typically developing peers. #K12ArtChat
A1- Choice is a big one! Students learn and express their knowledge in different ways. Also, when presenting the lesson I try to incorporate different videos, visuals, hands on, movements, etc. to capture everyone's attention #K12ArtChat
Q2: I teach my classes about the different art movement and how they all helped inspire what we know today and all the arts are uberly diverse and from everywhere. #k12artchat
I try to ensure I am demo-ing, speaking, and following written steps for every procedure, step, technique, everything. If I know they can see, here, and read, then they should be able to follow the steps one of the ways! #K12ArtChat
Great responses thus far... I love the variety of options and choices being offered through art to meet students at their learning levels or needs! #a1#K12ArtChat
Currently for clay slab boxes, I encourage unique size and shape through construction, but allow for templates to be used for success in 3D construction of containers decorated with meaningful and personal sculptures #A1#k12ArtChat#GWMS
#A2: I encourage students to explore their culture in their artwork by creating stories. The work should tell the story without using words. This student work is exploring how we can feel like two different people at the same time.
#k12artchat
A3: by making everyone realize we are all diverse and some of our most creative individuals weren’t from the states. Gotta broaden those horizons. #k12artchat
A2- Having lessons on inclusion and giving students freedom to bring their own culture into the art lessons/projects encourages students to respect each other. Giving students a chance to share and learn from each other as well. #K12ArtChat
#a2 I love to challenge students to share personal stories from their own lives and experiences. Through art and conversation we all learn so much about cultures differences and the elements the unite us all! #k12artchat
A2. Being cognizant of how I frame what I say is so important. Avoid micro aggressions that my turn off students. Also, provide examples from a diverse selection of artists throughout time. #k12artchat
Culture can show up anywhere, anytime, when kids have choice and opportunity to express themselves. Color, imagery, and technique may influence or inspire artwork by different individuals #A2#k12artchat#GWMS
#K12ArtChat running late! A1 for differentiated instruction I like recorded videos of directions for students that watch again later... and again if needed.. visuals, super open ended lessons!
A2 a big part of this is exposure...they can't get to the respect if they don't have access to things that are different from what they know...the arts lend themselves perfectly to exposure to new cultures #k12artchat#k12artchat
#k12ArtChat have you had a chance to listen to the podcast? We get to have extended convos with all our chat hosts! Check it out The Creatively Connected Classroom https://t.co/iJbJL36ayh let us know what you think!
#K12ArtChat A3 #choiceart we validate our own voice through ChoiceArt - students presentations help create a safe environment to embrace a variety of ideas.
#A3: In my classroom we celebrate the artistic skills that makes them each unique. We talk about how we each make our own marks or doodles that leaves a signature that is not our name in the corner. #k12artchat
#A3 Giving voice to students to express their own stories and time to share with classmates in discussion is a wonderful opportunity to learn to appreciate unique qualities in us all. #k12artchat
A3 #K12ArtChat My Art 2 students are creating an Identity project based on the idea they are more than a checked box when dealing with their personalities identities. They love it!!
I teach Fashion and run a Fashion show every year. We make sure the models represent our student body,we actively fight stereotypes. the designers tell their own story through their line #K12ArtChat
A3 I have a diverse population and we travel the world to many continents, I tend to focus on cultures more than individual artists. I love art history and try to bring something into every lesson. #K12artchat
#K12artchat A4 my students share artists that they emulate, admire, and connect to. It’s a mixture of traditional artists and also musicians, writers, environmentalists, athletes. It’s a learning experience for me too.
A3 being lucky enough to teach @ibpyp at a super diverse school only ADDS to the incredible artwork and conversations that happen in my room... it’s like art teacher heaven! #proudtobeIB#K12ArtChat
A3- Creating opportunities for students to create art works that are not all the same and have their voice helps students understand that while we may have similarities we are all also different and it is important to accept one another. #K12ArtChat
Q3 teaching kids to communicate about artwork and building their vocabulary to do so, along with explicit instruction on inclusion and understanding unique qualities of all artists #K12ArtChat
Showing the kid’s a portion of the #kinseycollection and letting them see African American artists that went to Europe and Mexico working alongside a diverse group of artists have been very eye opening for many of our students! https://t.co/r6UnAae4OG#k12ArtChat
A3 I try to find folktales from around the world that tie into lessons. I have a diverse group of As from all over the world that come via the auto industry, my Ss are excited to see their cultures represented in the art room #K12artchat
A4: Inspire the high school minds. We go anywhere from Picasso-to-Pollock-to- Shepard Fairy and then some. Each one had/has made an impact in our lives. #k12artchat
Hi! I am Flow Tutor and I teach HS Photography and Art 2 in TN! A-2 I have found the work of Richard Lou to be a great discussion- starter on this subject! Check out his classroom safe Vimeo https://t.co/w4u937UXRQ
I believe students will tell the stories they NEED to tell. I keep it open for their own comfort level and stay supportive and validate any story they share. #k12artchat
#A4: To help students get a global perspective of art I highlight fun facts. Did you know...Swiss artist, Felice Varini created Eccentric Concentric Circles on the 2,500 year old walls of the medieval city with thin sheet of yellow aluminum. #k12artchat
After Ss sketched the artwork on loan from China, they wrote letters on the back of their sketch to the student artists explaining what connected them to their art. These drawings and letters will travel back to China on Friday to the artists. @GWAcademyChi@GemsChiArt
A4 here are my slides of last year’s artists of the day, and then the pic with way fewer is the start of this year’s artist of the day! 5 min warm up with sketching, and then a 2 minute intro clip about the artist every day! #K12artchat
Thanks to Michelle Obama we now have diverse Fashion designers to look at. Project runway is the other contributor to diversity in famous designers. Thankful #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat Hi, all! Think I caught up.
A3: my school has very little obvious diverse ethnicities, so we dig into everyone’s unique heritage while “Travelling the World of Art” gathering inspiration from each continent (Antarctica is a blank page to be written or drawn 🙂)
A3 Have a big Indian population and did a lot of Indian inspired projects. We then visited RISD museum and saw art work from India. They were thrilled! #k12artchat
#k12ArtChat Q3 I have life size photos of diverse artists around my room along with images of their work. Students constantly ask who they are, which gives me an opportunity to share information about them. Willie Cole, I M Pei, Kahlo, Warhol, Nevelson, etc.
A4 focus on cultures: we go to Afrivs for our mask inspirations, we look at wood block fabric orinint in India before we make our prints, we read a creation story from the Ojibwa of Michigan to inspire a new project, etc..., my 5th graders loved Britto last year #K12artchat
A4-There are so many great artists to share! I believe it helps to choose artists that are different than the population at your school because that way they can see beyond themselves and learn about others. Two favs: Yayoi Kusama, Faith Ringgold #K12artchat
I show videos of artists who create murals in South America, interviews with engineer artists who design automotives in Japan, stories on how potholes are filled in Chicago, etc. Current events, #Newsela, and #YouTube are great sources of information #A4#GWMS#k12artchat
A5: This yr I have a really large Venezuelan population. So I have started to understand the power of Google Translate on my instructions & vocab. #K12ArtChat
A5: Luckily I’m bilingual and get to work with awesome students so I can close at least one language barrier and show them the magic that is design. If not asking for help. It is not a sign of weakness, but strength. #k12artchat
A5 I use all my ESL training constantly! But sometimes you just need to break out google translate 😬 the wonderful thing about art is it transcends written language! Everyone has a home in art!! #K12artchat
#k12artchat My environmental geology students have a creativity project where they're trying to find geology in art, and art in geology! Any suggestions for artists they should be looking to for inspiration?
A5- Visuals help a lot! Written instructions with images. Also, if there is a student that speaks the same language they can buddy up and help each other. #K12artchat
A5 Use of visuals, small groups for language practice with peers, previewing material for next lesson, me talking with ELL teacher are some ways to offer support #k12artchat
A5 I have signs and labels with pictures, enunciate, speak slower, demo and hold up materials and repeat the words in English so my ELL Ss can follow along visually. #K12artchat
I love to encourage students to speak, right and read in art as often as possible. A fun descriptive & drawing game gets kids talking every time! #k12ArtChat#a5
#k12ArtChat A5 I make sure we conference often, pair a class mentor with them, and encourage them to share their culture. I try to have artifacts in my studio that reflects their culture. I also celebrate their holidays in class.

A5: I have no ESL students this year, but the beauty of the strategies I use to support different learning styles is that they benefit everyone. #k12ArtChat
We explore ideas based on personal interests & illustrate them as an introduction to the trimester using the medium of choice for each composition. A great time to hear, see, and ask questions to promote further understanding and develop a partnership #A6#k12artchat#GWMS
#k12ArtChat A6 I encourage all my students to express themselves and to connect a reason for why they are creating what the are doing. Create something engaging and that tells a story.
A-6 I have found that storytelling is a quite powerful tool - once students did an installation using photocopied family photos, several from each child, to make their own 'family tree' #k12ArtChat
A6: So important to hear their concerns. I teach them how to express it so that they will be heard. Not all adults listen to teenagers if they dont strike the right tone. Not being heard leads to no tolerance towards others. #K12ArtChat
A6- Creating meaningful art lessons with big ideas and individual choice encourages my students to use personal experiences, concerns, interests. Also building a good classroom environment where students feel free to share. #K12artchat

Q6: All student work is unique! Allowing choice in subject matter through planning, practice, and research in skills and techniques. Students are able to find their voice and tell their story! #k12ArtChat
A5: a smile is universal! We share vocab learning starting with colors because they’re visual. Over years I’ve learned colors in Japanese, Korean, Italian, Spanish, American Sign #K12ArtChat
#A6: One of my students created her AP concentration on her experience of what it is like to live with a sibling that has Downs Syndrome. It explores the challenges and celebrates the overwhelming joy. #k12artchat
Thank you to everyone for joining our #k12artchat tonight! I hope you all found something inspiring to take back to your school community. Have a great evening and a wonderful weekend ahead!
