A1. My tribe. I've been so disconnected, things are crazy in work life and I feel all of that crazy energy just leaking from me. I'm here to drink the Kool aid!!! #TOSAchat
A1 When working with teachers I encourage them to support one another as they try new things but to not be afraid to blaze the trail along either. #TOSAchat
A1: I define a MAVERICK teacher is one willing to take risks. For example, I wasn't too comfortable attempting #booksnaps with my 9th graders when asked by my friend @TaraMartinEDU to try it out. I took a risk and the kids had fun. I decided to continue to take risks. #TOSAchat
A1: They don't listen to the "can't" voice, they see failure as a learning diving board, they don't accept things only because they've always been done #tosachat
A1: A MAVERICK teacher is someone who is willing to be different and try something new. Someone who is willing to fail -> tweak and try again! #TOSAchat
A1: Stealing this from @BreneBrown Strong Back, Soft Front , Wild Heart . My mantra. Bold and passionate , leaving fear behind to get what needs to get done for our scholars #TOSAchat@jmattmiller
A1: Maverick Ts are willing to fly against the status-quo for the good of students. Mavs will trying radical strategies to win for Ss #tosachat#ditchbook
#TOSAchat Jim, ms counselor from Texas, joining late. Being a maverick isn’t a bad thing. Mavericks find ways around roadblocks. Education can bog down. Mavericks help break the gridlock.
A1 Maverick teachers know that their comfort zone should NOT get in the way of their students’ learning. They don’t let fear of failure prevent them from trying. #tosachat
A1 Maverick teachers know that their comfort zone should NOT get in the way of their students’ learning. They don’t let fear of failure prevent them from trying. #tosachat
A1: I think it’s a lot of risk-taking. Just grabbing the bull by the horns and going for it when you have an innovative idea. Reflect, revise, & take another run at it! #tosachat
Maverick teachers don't just do things because it is the way everyone is doing them. They teach to where their hearts and thoughts lead them! #TOSACHAT
This is an IMPORTANT point Rocky brings up ...
A GOOD maverick teacher doesn't just fly in the face of the traditional. Every. Single. Time. Just to do it.
They know there's a balance to it all. #tosachat
Hey Jim! It's going well. It's been really busy but finally getting in a groove. Trying to be more preventative and help Ts improve tier 1 instructional practices #tosachat
A1 Gotta be willing to fly below the hard deck if it helps you get the shot, sometimes ya gotta buzz the tower, and sometimes you’re gonna have to sing in public (or at least do something equally embarrassing) #tosachat#maverickteacher
A1: A maverick teacher is willing to take risks and push themselves. They question the status quo and don't accept things just because "we've always done it this way". #TOSAchat
Definitely the first time I created my own #Threeactmath and tried to be like @ddmeyer. The first time wasn't great but I got back on the horse and tried again! #TOSAchat
It's OK to take some risks, right Rocky? I'm looking at your feed and I've seen three dissenting tweets ... did I touch a nerve or something? #tosachat
A2: I brought The DBQ Project (written for HS) down to 5th grade. Scaffolded the learning, History Detective theme...people thought I was crazy...but kids loved the primary sources and analyzed them to the point of some amazing arguments. #tosachat
A2: Starting https://t.co/nC7DaMcKKY curriculum definitely had me leaving my comfort zone. If I let my Ks pick their partners and run wild with materials...would it be a disaster? (Spoiler alert: it wasn't, it was magical) #TOSAchat
A2: A risk I took:
Learned a conversational method for teaching Spanish with storytelling.
Picked up a nervous habit: said the word "clase" incessantly before every sentence.
Oops. But at least I was taking a risk ... #TOSAchat
A2 Left a GREAT staff and school I'd been at for many year for a new school in my home town. Finding out that I'm more Maverick than I thought. #TOSAchat
A2: did a snowball activity and let Ss throw paperballs at me. Glad I didn't have any star baseball players in class, but they loved it. Never heard so much purposeful laughter in a math class #TOSAchat
A2: The first time I had my whole class on a shared Google Doc to share their thinking & comment on each other. Total risk that involved a lot of letting go, but ended up being an awesome experience. #tosachat
A2: Setting up our first #alisalstrong tech conference was definitely leaving my comfort zone, but this year we just had our third installment! #TOSAchat
A2: Not only going worksheet-less, but also template-less -- initiating a unit with a conversation with students and building the unit map and templates collaboratively with the kids. We're going to have a sweet video PSA to show for it. #TOSAchat#prenticeeagles
A3: I started an entire STEM club called #STEAMMakers, got a #3d printer I had no idea how to use at the time, bought robots with my own 💰, learned to code a bit, went to #picademy , even learned to solder- because I believe kids deserve all those opportunities. #tosachat
A2: I designed a gameboard lesson plan for six weeks for Fahrenheit 451. I wasn't confident to let it go live. I asked @KarlyMoura for input. I was new to TChat and really didn't want to burden her. I made some changes she suggested and the lesson was a success. #TOSAchat
A2: Showed my 5th grade class the phenomena of mixing acids and bases-then challenged them to demonstrate a similar chemical reaction using the scientific method. #tosachat
A2: The minute I stepped into teaching math. But especially when I incorporated some "out of box (book)" methods. I felt I was going against the grain, but saw Ss succeeding. #tosachat
I took on 3 grades of full-inclusion science and robotics on a months notice. My first response was 'do you know who you're asking to do this?'. After a brief summer training I dove in. #tosachat
It's a little like the Wild Wild West until some parameters were set, but it's the only time I've ever seen 100% student participation I could point to. #tosachat
A2: Tough to answer this one right now. I'm so far outside of my comfort zone in my current job, I can't even see my comfort zone. The comfort zone is a dot to me. #tosachat@TeachingTechNix and @annkozma723 will get this tweet :)
A2 I staged a fight in my room to teach about character motivations. The principal thought the fight was real and tried to take the kid out of class. #tosachat
A2: Used Classic Google Sites to help students create "Civil War Blogs" last year, with each student taking on a dif. historical person's perspective. Page permissions were helpful. Want to do it again this year #ditchbook#tosachat
Q2: A colleague introduced me to the idea of classroom transformations. Met my 1st graders after recess in scrubs and a dr mask to and taught “contraction surgery” ❤️ their reactions and willingness to play along in the name of learning.#TOSAchat
A2 ...as a TOSA this year has pushed me into Maverick mode for sure...I have upped my game with offering online courses, innovative ways to offer training. Saturating the market LOL #PYLlearns#TOSAchat
We decided to open a coffee house run by students. I didn’t drink coffee or know how to make it. Going into 3rd year & best idea ever! #kidsneedjobs#tosachat#weteachmorethancoffee
A2: Doing a design thinking project with my 7th & 8th grade Drama 2 students last year. It was a very open-ended project that pushed my kids (and myself) to uncomfortable areas. However, the end results were amazing. #TOSAchat
I have a pin on my lanyard at school that says Keep Going. It's a perfect daily reminder that what I'm doing and the direction I'm going re all the right way. #tosachat
A2) Jumping into Flipgrid with a bunch of second graders to reflect on mathematical practices. It was a bit crazy, it wasn't my class, but the teacher was my wingman and it was definitely fun & memorable. #tosachat
A2: I created a success academy based on mindfulness, #SEL and success principles used by many top entrepreneurs for Ss academically struggling and those not engaged but academically at grade level for my k12 online school. Growth mindset & intervention intertwined #tosachat
A2: principal observation. Math with second graders. At the end we circled up, not to discuss the math, but how they felt about how they worked together #TOSAchat
A2: Used Classic Google Sites to help students create "Civil War Blogs" last year, with each student taking on a dif. historical person's perspective. Page permissions were helpful. Want to do it again this year #ditchbook#tosachat
A2) Hopping in for this, Matt (plot twist: I don't know what TOSA is):
When my class studied a middle school version of Homer's "The Iliad," we created our own "Trojan Horse" and conquered a class with paper wads and silly string. Custodial staff 'bout killed me. #TOSAchat
A2 don't know if "Maverick", but when I taught 5th grade, I was tired of state reports. Standards just said research report so switched it up for national monument reports. Ss made a quiz for their report and swapped papers. One added letters from Vietnam vets. #tosachat
A2: Taught Thesis Throw Down strategy from @Catlin_Tucker to 2 very different groups of students who I had never met. Heart thumping to the strains of Danger Zone 😳 #TOSAchat
A2: Gave a student a task and said" you can complete this task any way you need to" to push for self-advocacy. Waited while he thought for literally 7 minutes. Worth it. #tosachat
We decided to open a coffee house run by students. I didn’t drink coffee or know how to make it. Going into 3rd year & best idea ever! #kidsneedjobs#tosachat#weteachmorethancoffee
I totally feel you on this - this year has been a whole lot of pushing myself out of my comfort zone. But that's why I've learned so much so quickly! (and it helps that I have an amazing #PLN to support me) #TOSAchat

@peerlessgreen, @TeachingTechNix, @annkozma723
A3: Failure, judgement from others, fear of getting "in trouble", messiness.
I oftentimes jump before the "wait, nooooo" voice, but it's always served me well. I'm not discouraged easily. #tosachat
A3: they think "safe" teaching (teaching to the test) is the best thing for students. Really it's the riskiest. We need to make learning meaningful and memorable #tosachat
It can get frustrating not having your ideas about progress embraced by others, especially decision-makers. It's definitely easier to be non-Maverick, though that's not an option I'm willing to take. #tosachat
A3: Being a Maverick takes time. There is a lack of it. Maverick takes work. There are a lot of lesson assigners rather than designers...bogged down in the curriculum changes maybe. Naysayers, negativity discourages me. But I am persistent and joyful #kidsdeserveit#TOSAchat
A2 #tosachat Also, took 5th graders on tall ship overnight sailing experience to go with "Carry On, Mr. Bowditch" They are in their 20s now and still talk about it! #oceaninstitute
I'm in an interim spot, and I'm learning SO MUCH about the work and about myself. I'm embracing that part of it, for sure. But after spending time with my tribe last week, today was a huge struggle. Hoping tomorrow will be better! #tosachat
In reply to
@iluvteaching72, @TeachingTechNix, @annkozma723
A3: the fear of failure stopped me for a while. But know I have a growth mindset for my teaching and lean into the failure. I’m really good at leaning! #TOSAchat
A3: Feel like this question has many answers. I am going to say that the wrong admin team can have a negative effect on maverick teaching. Conversely though the right admin team can make teachers soar. #TOSAchat
A3: Lack of collaboration and other people in your building to talk with. It helps when other people are also working outside their comfort zone. #TOSAchat
A2b: Another was last week when Ss used @flipgrid as a "tutor" where Ss explained a problem (or more) from math study guide so Ss could hear/see others explain probs I had explained. Ss could also respond to others with similarities or differences in solving problems. #tosachat
Oh man! SOOOO not. I am still learning and LOVING it but no. I wasn't a "math" or "science" or "tech" person. But I fell in LOVE with them all and realized that I AM! #TOSAchat
HAND DOWN, the criticism from other Ts on site. I have learned to care MORE about my Ss and less about what others think. A teacher once told me to slow down so I wouldn’t make HER look bad. #tosachat@jmattmiller@KarlyMoura
A3: Worrying how the wild ideas will be perceived, know I shouldn’t care what others think, especially if I know in my ❤️ it is amazing, but that nagging voice of self doubt creeps in sometimes.#TOSAchat
A3: Risk, Change, Failure. Those are the leading causes that discourage Maverick teaching. What discourages me? I don't like to fail my kids. That kills it for me most. However, Ss need to see healthy failure. #tosachat
A3: Fear, lack of peer and admin support. Fear can be of failure, of negatives repercussions form admin if a lesson fails big, or fear of lacking the skill and presence to pull it off. Fatigue. But we've gotta keep swimming! #TOSAchat
A3: Educational environments that don’t support risk-taking. I did some research last year in technology integration in a K-8 school district and I was shocked at the qty of Ts who responded that they couldn’t integrate because of this. #tosachat
A3: Risk Taking can be tough especially if you have a class that might not be receptive. I have a class of 9th graders that are hard to motivate. For example, I was asked recently "Can we have a packet so I can plug in?" I thought that all I can do is not give up. #TOSAchat
A3: Being a Maverick teacher is great, BUT if you don't have the support of admin it can be REALLY difficult to continue! Also, fearful that other Ts will think you're trying to show them up #tosachat
A2: Teaching new subjects: Music appreciation, 3D art, ELA 7, 8, 9, & 11 when your background is the theatre arts. It’s all about immersion & collaboration. #tosachat
A2 Minecraft option as alt. assessment. Genius hour. Inviting Ss to @Flipgrid before school started are a few. I know my colleagues & PLN do this daily & love learning from other Ts. #TOSAchat
A3: they think "safe" teaching (teaching to the test) is the best thing for students. Really it's the riskiest. We need to make learning meaningful and memorable #tosachat
What a great story and attitude. That is what maverick teaching is about. Want more of my teachers to take risks because the rewards are great. #tosachat
A3: Teachers want to do right by their students. Fear is a great barrier to great. Fear of: failure, not good enough, doing harm, unknown... Gotta #ditchthatfear as @JoeMarquez70 says. Just leap!

A3: Fear is the biggest deterrent. Culture is so important - it's hard to take risks if you don't feel that your environment will support you if you fail.
#TOSAchat
A3 I get overwhelmed by trying to do too much and want to just throw my hands up. Sometimes it's taking on too much and needing to slow down. Other times I just need to be better at focusing. #TOSAchat
A3) Pacing guides and demands that all students be doing the same lesson as the classroom next to them. Working as a team can be challenging, I want to be a team flyer, but I also gotta teach in a way that makes sense to me #tosachat
A3 there’s always risk involved and that can be daunting. Fatigue from explaining yourself to admins, to fellow Ts, resistance and resentment from others. Time. Pushback from parents, I still have some that demand HW. #tosachat
A3: One of the issues my site struggles with is resource. We are hindered by over blockage (google is blocked on the WiFi even), very limited devices, limited funding toward edtech #tosachat
A3: Admin that takes u for granted. When u work hard, go above & beyond, then get kicked in the shins by a comment that cuts u down. Makes u want to just tow the line instead of conquering it. #tosachat
I agree with you Kimberly. Sometimes it is hard to keep up the motivation but I try to persistent and joyful also. I remember that there are some kids who want to work and learn. I use that as my motivator. #TOSAchat
A3: My biggest deterrent has been the chatter- in the past. This year, I had a switch flip- I’ve cut the tape on all chatter- internal & exterior. #tosachat
You know one powerful ingredient in having courage to take risks, #tosachat friends?
#TOSACHAT. This PLN.
You all have each others backs in an amazing way. I've always admired that about this group.
You have a GREAT support system.
Trying something and it doesn't take a S limitations into consideration. I have to circle back with enthusiasm and not quit. Sometimes I can't figure it out! #tosachat
So true! We are our own worst enemy. That's why I love my tribe - they remind me of what's going well when I start focusing on what's not working.
#TOSAchat
We need to support others in #failforward Can’t give up on try #1. Students need to learn what to do after a fall- we must model it. It’s process. #tosachat
A4: Having a PLN and places like #tosachat and Voxer remind me I'm not alone and to stay the course. Also, #HyperDocs always. Forever. Period. The End.
A2: When I stopped teaching Kindergarten & accepted SPED Inclusion facilitator for the campus. Then left SPED Inclusion to accept the Dyslexia Therapist position. How can I ask my Ss to risk & leave a comfort zone if I forget what that feels like? #HUGElearningcurve#TOSAChat

A3: Underlying it all is fear. fear of reprisal from colleagues and admin; fear of failing; fear of succeeding; just plain fear of change. We must jump those hurdles for our students and our colleagues. #tosachat

A4 OMG, TWITTTTTTTER!!! This tool has created a PLN that has inspired, uplifted, and empowered me through my phases as an educator. #tosachat@KarlyMoura@jmattmiller
A3: Being in an environment that does not reward risk is the killer of all enthusiasm. Nothing is a sure thing, but others Fears can really junk things up. If you dont want to do it, that's fine but dont STOP ME. #tosachat
Taking risks and making change can be overwhelming.
Overwhelm, though, isn't about having too many options.
It's not knowing where to start. Pick a starting point and just get started. #tosachat
A4: More and more it's not about the tools -- I'm totally into leveraging free stuff, gSuite, etc. What else can we do with *this*? How can I put my Ss more in the driver's seat? #TOSAchat
A4: Rediscovering Twitter! There are so many resources right here! Twitter chats lead me to more resources and people around the world who are being MAVERICKS #TOSAchat
A4: When the year started, I had hoped @flipgrid would be the tool to catch fire but the kids really didn't want participate. My last assignment, the kids designed their own game boards based on the novel we were reading. The time and dedication was something to see. #TOSAchat
A4: Twitter opened up the Dave Burgess publishing books that are blowing my mind (and making my "to read" list WAY too long (that's a good thing!) #tosachat
God is our father right? Then why he is hiding himself from us? Why don't he come in front of us like a father does? #tosachat

A3: they think "safe" teaching (teaching to the test) is the best thing for students. Really it's the riskiest. We need to make learning meaningful and memorable #tosachat
💯 % without-a-doubt it’s my Twitter #PLN. I absorb bravery, insight, & knowledge from folks outside my district who are trying new things, exploring & sharing things I never heard of, & always cheering each other on! #TOSAchat
A4: My #PLN - in real life and on twitter - and Podcasts! I learn so much from both and whenever I start doubting myself, my tweeps boost me up! #TOSAchat#PodcastEDU

A4 The tool that makes me a maverick teacher is being about to have technology as a resource at my school. It makes learning more accessible and more inquiry based. #TOSAChat#EDUT501AGUDA
When I was a brand new teacher someone told me “you don’t have to wait to start something new”. It was so simple and so powerful. I tell all new teachers this when they are hesitant to try something new/courageous. #tosachat
A4 definitely all the tweeps on twitter, participation in ed chats has helped me grow more than anything else. Strategy, I try to “Talk less, smile more”🎶 hand off was and is the hardest thing for me and I try to be mindful of who owns this learning. #tosachat
A2: Seems like nothing now but, it was when station rotations really didn’t work for me, my students, or the flow of my lessons so I switched a workshop format. #tosachat

A4: Twitter! I’ve been on for years but really figured it out at #fallcue when talking with @kshevy - it’s been a game changer for me and helps me feel like I am always with my people #tosachat#weareCUE
A3: having a mold that your principals expect you to fit, and then even when you throw that to the wind, students are so used to it that they have forgotten how to be risk takers themselves
#tosachat
Exactly! Start something new today! Doesn't have to be beginning of the year, the semester, even the week. Every day is a new day in education! #tosachat
A5 My big plan is some personalized professional learning opportunities. Trying to up our game in an era of no subs, limited funds, etc. Presenting to cabinet tomorrow...time to suit up! LOL #TOSAchat
A3: Feeling like we’ll be judged for failing by admin, coaches, peers, admin, and/or students. Also, just plain ol’ exhaustion makes it difficult to put in the emotional energy that is necessary for taking risks. #tosachat
#tosachat A5: I'd really like to work on a plan that allows me more consistent coaching face time with teachers! Had a good system last year but it has dwindled.
A4: Continuously inspired by Instagram stories. Love, love, love visually supported sound bites. Snapchat groups in place of Remind=more S participation. #TOSAchat
A5: Create an amazing idea for my community and get support from Google. #InnovatorApplication My Valley is small enough where I feel like we can have a huge impact on the people I care about the most. #tosachat
A3: When I experience the “blind side” from some criticism after I built up enough courage to take a risk. I talk myself out of “falling back in line” by remembering: “I’m an advocate 1st & teacher 2nd-an advocate for change for my Ss benefit” #keepsthingsinperspective#TOSAchat
A5 I keep thinking but honestly I am doing my Maverick teaching right now. Teaching Computer Science while having the opportunity to still work with teachers integrating edtech. Total dream job. #TOSAChat
A5: Starting a GCE Level 2 training for my faculty in April, in the classroom: just introduced a new protocols for learning vocabulary in EL1. Next year: adding a new class to my schedule: CS A. #tosachat
A5 1) team teach with a buddy class 2) teach Littles Ts how to integrate tech 3) NEVER forget why I became a teacher! I love helping others. I live and teach in my community. I am the example. #tosachat@jmattmiller@KarlyMoura
A5: Pushing the reset button and starting something new and great. Don't know what yet. Job eliminated next year....Wondering what my next adventure will be #tosachat#ditchbook
I met you at ISTE17 and you told me to do something that made me uncomfortable. HERE I AM!! New job and Allllll uncomfortable and LOVING IT!!! #tosachat
A5: The sad part is I don't have a dream at the moment. I have things I want to do like Google Certification. All I want is the opportunity to continue to grow as an educator, person, and be willing to take more risks to get kids out of their shells now and again. #TOSAchat
A5) Learned a lot from #ACSA at #cue18 and want to develop as a leader! Currently in an admin credential program so we’ll see where that takes me :) #tosachat
A5: I plan to present professional learning sessions in a PBL format. Wish me luck! “Things won’t be different until we do different” @JoeFuertsch#tosachat
🚨 Mark your calendars! 📅

A5: Bring #SEL to Every school and Every Student in California with my work with @sel4ca. It can make ALL the difference. But I want to also raise the EQ of all school staff and Teachers, along with Parents to support this from every angle. THAT can change the world. #TOSAchat
Q5: my big maverick plan is to start adding gamification to my classes. I am thinking of practicing on the teachers for our annual state testing training. #TOSAchat
A2: This entire year has been a giant leap of faith into a new subject without a whole lot of support. But it has been so fun. We have done incredible labs and activities that have wreaked havoc in my room but good learning has happened.
#tosachat
A5: Get district approval after piloting #MinecraftEDU for other Ts to use if so desired; deleting H.W. from my plan book, ditching more textbooks from student desks! #tosachat
A5: My Maverick plans for the future is getting my Master (eek!) - finally found a program that called to me (and was motivated by the amazing @LisaTeachesTech ). Will be submitting my application this month. #TOSAchat
A5: This scares the bejeezus out of me, but I’d love to do a keynote! I also DREAM 💭 of starting to bring really great quality #OER to my district. You said dream big, right? #tosachat
A5: I need to do my Google certification. Using Padlet more. NOT starting the next school year with curriculum, but designing activities that set the tone for the year. And starting a blog. #tosachat
That’s awesome! The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner is a worthwhile investment even before starting the program! It’ll def prep you for what’s to come :) #tosachat
A5 My Maverick Tech Integration Teaching plans are simply to be patient YET persistent. Understand where colleagues are coming from but show them the light when it comes to utilizing technology/being Maverick teachers themselves #TOSAChat
A2: I’m a perfectionist, so I rarely take a risk without rehearsing it first and making my demo lessons the best they can be. But I do let teachers know, “I’m trying this out, and I want to know what you think.” #tosachat
A5) We're working in integrated coaching cycles. Breaking down departmental silos between Common Core, 2nd Language, SPED, Instructional Tech support (me), Family & Community Engagement... It's pulled back my tech ninja-ness, but it's mavericky in it's newness #tosachat
A5: My Maverick Teaching plan for next yr (when I go back in the classroom...!!) is design thinking to bring more empathy-based, authentic learning experiences into the classrm! #tosachat
I was so happy to see "my kids" after being away for three days. I thought of them every day at #cue18 obviously, but being back was awesome! #TOSAChat

The Master's program will test you. Best advice is do not stop writing (if you are writing), it is easy to procrasinate. Pace yourself. You got this! #TOSAchat
A5: To not let others quiet my voice in my quest to help others in finding the Maverick in them. We must in order to create Maverick students. The rest, still unwritten... #possibilities#tosachat
A5: Maverick Teaching for next yr part 2 = flesh out a digital making scope/sequence for my class. As TOSA just get to do a project here & there w/classes. Excited to create a yr long learning plan for my class! #tosachat
Ooooooohhh. That gives me an idea for a start of the year project: "What is your super power?" Presentation Could be a sport, computers, reading, writing, drawing, etc. Sometimes I miss the classroom when ideas pop up! #edtechcoach#tosachat
