#engsschat#edchat#elachat#sschat#engchat Hi Everyone, thank you so much for chatting tonight. I'm an Assistant Professor of elementary social studies education at KSU. I taught middle grades ELA and SS. I'm excited to learn from you all!
I'm Chris from Bloomington, IN. I teach world history for a private online HS affiliated w/ Indiana Univ. I'm also on the #sschat team. Excited for tonight's #engsschat
VTS (visual thinking strategies), anyone? The color scheme and font make me think of segregation signs. Maybe the blurs humanize the fact that even young children were effected? I would love to hear everyone else’s thoughts! #engsschat
I was just thinking the same thing, Jennifer! I see the pressure to be admitted as someone attempts to peer in from the outside. Could this image also represent a lack of access to knowledge? #engsschat
The door is set apart in its display, so it must be of some significance. The shape created by the handprints, etc. looks like a raccoon? Panda? #engsschat

#engsschat#edchat#elachat#sschat#engchat. Are you all familiar with VTS? IT's a great strategy for including all students and there are no right or wrong answers!
Thanks for providing the background information here. I love the conversation and interpretations from everyone. What powerful potential an image like this could have in a class discussion. #engsschat
A2 I am afraid I am boring and mainly do photo analysis. https://t.co/vt3ieSvEbh Students like learning the behind the scenes from historical photos. This one did not have a happy ending. #engsschat
A2. My bell-ringers have "Material Culture Mondays," and "Write-it-Out Wednesdays," which incorporate a lot of art (in various forms). It's used to spark discussions, introduce units/topics, and to bridge some difficult topics. #engsschat
A2) My favorite way to use art is to show students different pieces about the same topic and have them compare and contrast differing perspectives #engsschat
A2, Reflecting on a piece of art is a great anticipatory activity. I also love using gallery walks to help students understand the context of a text. #engsschat
I'm so interested to read everyone's response to this one!! Art can be a lot of things... I use a lot of photography and other images to work on Ss #medialiteracy skills. #engsschat
#engsschat A2 Art is used to teach summary, impression, close reading, connecting on a personal level, visual/textual evidence, emotion, and so much more
A2. I like to use art as a primary source to show that even primary sources are created with a point of view, a message, and an audience in mind. #engsschat
I’ve used a similar visual thinking routine to “hook” students into a lesson. Some of my favorites are things like this that get students thinking about how lines and color convey emotions! #engsschathttps://t.co/4m0nsQs2Kj
#engsschat#elachat#edchat A2 Brought in Philo Barnhart, creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid & Charles Moisant to share their story about art and animation. Great experience for our students to be able to participate in a live discussion with them.
I started with this website. I like that some of the pictures have additional prompting to help students get started while others just offer an image. #engsschathttps://t.co/DkgPWWYhfU
A2: LOVE using art in the classroom! Most of my projects involve art in some capacity. Plus, two of my favorites are the Pop! assignments and one-pagers. #engsschat
Some are - they research a biography and turn that person into a superhero. They also summarize Nat Turner in an image. There are more - illustrating a modern fairytale, creating a comic on a modern civil rights issue... #engsschat
A2) I'm also always looking for ways to allow students to create art in some capacity. One of the assignments I like is an Instagram character sketch. Ss can draw, paint, or take photos. #engsschat
A2- music is also art- students walk into class every day listening to music from an artist who was born that day or relates to our lesson somehow #engsschat
Need arts integration ideas? We have an active group in the TPS Teachers Network called The Arts and Primary Sources. Free, peer-to-peer network for educators funded by @TeachingLC grant. https://t.co/HofXwXNsMt#engsschat
#engsschat. I like to use Seixas and Peck's terminology "account" and "trace" better than primary and secondary. It's a bit more nuanced and gets at intentionality
A3. I always liked using WWII propaganda to show how powerful art can be in shaping behavior/social norms. Also, comparing the changes in architecture/fashion/art before & after the American Revolution as US struggled for legitimacy & connection w/historic republics #engsschat
Agree. Fortunate to have Kyle Cook of Matchbox 20 join us and share is story. Answer questions for our students and played the guitar for the students. #engsschat#elachat#edchat
Going to look this up! We are currently studying WWI, annotating poems, and creating our own original WW1 poems with a visual. #EngSSChat - thanks for sharing!
A2: I used to use art in my world history classes every unit, I would have a “gallery walk” where students would analyze different works of art from each era and essentially Tie it back to the SPRITE acronyms #sschat#engsschat
The work of Titus Kaphar and Kara Walker has been especially helpful in bringing up the role of historical memory and identity in this country's history. #engsschat
A2: in government I had a project where students would analyze protest songs from the past.. one of the best was when a student put together the meaning of “strange fruit” by Billie Halliday #sschat#engsschat
Let's not forget that "art" is more than paintings, drawings and sculpture. Music, dance, etc. can also educate students a lot about history, social norms, and denial. #engsschat
I have found that many students don't want to do this analysis out loud. They want to hear what their friends say first because they don't want to be teased for saying anything too controversial. #engsschat
It builds on a #medialiteracy and #newsliteracy unit from the beginning of the year. It's fun to see how they create their posters - via Google Draw or with markers. #engsschat
A2 I’ve had Ss create their own lyrics for songs for a topic in history. We’ve created memes for review. Poem for Ind Rev and annotate it to content. #engsschat
A2: A great comprehension check for a NF historical reading is having students explain the humor behind a history comic. They need scheme-building. #engsschat
A3: Art provides a great opportunity to discuss ideas like POV, purpose, how people can make different meanings and relate them to historical thinking #engsschat
#engsschat Since we're talking about music. I'm having my students attend a musical performance this semester. I'm inspired by this article: https://t.co/TE8jTIM0RL and the power of music to heal

I love how this video breaks down art in a historiography POV. I shoe it with English subtitles in French Revolution. L'Art en Question 4 : Vigée-Lebrun, Marie-Antoinette et ses enfants (Ver... https://t.co/EVvivAImga#engsschat
I love that what Ma says in this article, "I think culture can do everything to dispel fear because fear makes us smaller and culture makes us larger..." So true!! #sschat#engsschat
Hi All! Mary B. Mackley from Asheville, NC` Enjoyed learning from previous chats~ am author of a Civics Handbook (Middle & HS supplement) Thanks for letting me sit in & learn! Love Art! Visual...Musical... #sschat#engsschat#edchat#elachat#engchtuk
A3: Art can propagate truth from fact based on the audience. Religious art does this well as does art on American manifest destiny. However, Native American Art has been used for generations as documented history! #engsschat
Q4: #engsschat Maurizio Lazzarato writes that “artistic practices should not be the retelling of histories but should create the apparatuses from/through which history can be made." How might students read and write their way through Greta Pratt’s Nineteen Lincolns?
A3 I tried to have my students look at the background of the artist when looking at French Rev art. How odes this represent ppl of the time? How does it impact them? Connect to music and arts today. #engsschat
A4. Could be used to bring up questions like: Why has this variety of individuals chosen to portray Lincoln? Who is included? Who is excluded? Why? I use the Revere engraving & Henry Champney engraving of the Boston Massacre to explore meaning making in art. #engsschat
Great question for Ss! Who's POV? What makes you say that/What in the image leads you to that conclusion? What might artwork from the other POV look like? #engsschat
I show this w/Roger Shimomura's "Shimomura Crossing the Delaware" to open discussion about the American image at different times. Leutze, a German immigrant during the German unrest of the 1840s & Shimomura, a victim of the internment camps during WWII. #engsschat
I remember a TAH talk with Patrick Griffin where he used A Boy with a Flying Squirrel to discuss England and the colonies. https://t.co/RXdZEJ7EWs Art and stories can make a powerful impression and memory. #engsschat
#engsschat. I love that we keep going back to narratives and stories. I like that art can be a great way for not so proficient or early readers to engage. Visual texts :)
Thank you for this connection, Matt! I know many teachers who use the Leutze painting, but I've never seen the Shimomura one. My mind is spinning! #engsschat
A5 We will be looking at the poem I Never Saw Another Butterfly and art from Camp Terazin as we begin the Holocaust later this week. https://t.co/6glM0YhNuV#engsschat
A5) have you seen these photos? I remember thinking how there must be so much out there to explore. Having students investigate an area of interest could be powerful https://t.co/INkTGQi5AU#engsschat
#engsschat This is a great way to connect with students. We discuss how people represent themselves. They can totally relate to selfies https://t.co/k1mSrxPClZ
A6. I like the idea of incorporating @ThingLink into images and creating propaganda using common propaganda techniques (will have to try this during our American Revolution unit). #engsschat
A7: I have at least 13 different tabs open of artists/videos/works/sites to investigate further! I am so excited to brainstorm how to work some of it into my future classroom! You guys are awesome!! #engsschat#sschat
Join us next month on Monday, February 25th to talk Surviving the Winter Months in the ELA/SS Classroom. Keep the conversation going with #sschat, #engchat, and all the great #edchats throughout the month! #engsschat
