Creativity: the ability to see beyond the constraints of conformity and bring diagonal thinking into the solution. Innovate via remixing, redefining, and/or re-visioning. #IDedchat

  • QuarryAmy Sep 5 @ 10:17 PM EDT
Amy from Lewiston, ID. Excited to lurk! #idedchat
  • kriss_kelsey Sep 5 @ 10:17 PM EDT
A2: Our lessons must be carefully thought out and planned to keep our students engaged. If we foster an environment of creativity, it will keep it alive in our classrooms and our students will be able to speak and do freely and expressively. #IDedchat

I can give guidelines and expectations for showing knowledge of cells and organelles. One student may bake a cake with organelles labeled; one student may create a slide show or a movie on @WeVideo. The outcome is the same, but very different in the product. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Sep 5 @ 10:17 PM EDT
Multiple entry points and student choice - sounds like creativity is critical when teachers are planning - thinking of all learners. #IDedchat
    In reply to @AprilJNiemela
  • tracyscottkelly Sep 5 @ 10:18 PM EDT
A1. My definition of creativity is...everything! Even a worksheet was created. Prior to that maybe they used chalk and a board. Anything can and often times should be more creative. #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Sep 5 @ 10:18 PM EDT
Don’t just lurk. Come join in with the fun! #IDedchat

Q3: What do you do to work on your own creativity? In or outside of the classroom... #IDedchat
  • tracyscottkelly Sep 5 @ 10:21 PM EDT
I am great at brainstorming. There are no limits with me. The more crazy it gets, the bigger connections I make. Think of a student proving mastery of anything. If they have no limits, they usually will understand it better to prove how much they know. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Sep 5 @ 10:22 PM EDT
A3: One thing that I do to "foster" my own creativity is to believe that I CAN be creative. :-) #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Sep 5 @ 10:22 PM EDT
A3: I carry @Postit notes around all the time for whenever something hits me. #idedchat
  • WinkelerD Sep 5 @ 10:23 PM EDT
A3: Creativity for me has to come naturally. If I try and sit down to be "creative" I end up with mental block. #idedchat
  • AprilJNiemela Sep 5 @ 10:23 PM EDT
A3: Read and learn broadly. Cross-pollinate. Be a sponge. Enter every conversation knowing I have something to learn. Seek to be as transdisciplinary as possible. #IDEdChat
  • averyteach - Moderator Sep 5 @ 10:24 PM EDT
A3: Another big thing I am working on this year, although @elalitcoach may not see much evidence in my reflective notebook...YET..is REFLECTION. :-) #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Sep 5 @ 10:24 PM EDT
R3: so, there is this really cool tool called @Twitter that has some really cool chats and blogs and podcasts that give me ideas. Then I also have Ss that give me ideas and my #PLN and #PLCs that give me ideas. And then I have reached out to the community now. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Sep 5 @ 10:25 PM EDT
LOVE this - every conversation provides us with new knowledge! #IDedchat
    In reply to @AprilJNiemela
  • rhonda_urquidi Sep 5 @ 10:25 PM EDT
The creative component is so crucial ot teaching and learning so as to involve identity. Creating makes it personal and gives ownership at a very intimate level. #IDedchat
  • tracyscottkelly Sep 5 @ 10:25 PM EDT
What?!?! A tool you say? Isn't it awesome! #IDedchat
#IDedchat
  • kriss_kelsey Sep 5 @ 10:25 PM EDT
A3: I keep my mind busy and working, whether it’s with art, music, movement, or cooking. If we spend time to create (anything!) we will be creative in all of our pursuits! Remembering that everyone is creative is important, it doesn’t have to be something grandiose. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Sep 5 @ 10:26 PM EDT
YES - Twitter feeds my creative juices! Learn so much from all of my #PLN #IDedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio, @Twitter
  • QuarryAmy Sep 5 @ 10:26 PM EDT
A3: Exercise boosts my creativity. Much of my thinking happens then. Read as much as possible. Driving in silence. #idedchat
  • tracyscottkelly Sep 5 @ 10:27 PM EDT
Do you use the @Postit to seat alway Bugs? #IDedchat
  • rhonda_urquidi Sep 5 @ 10:27 PM EDT
For me, creative energy comes from unexpected directions. Time outside of the crucible, really. While running, showering, driving, gives me some of that percolating time . . . then I'm ready to dig in and find flow! #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Sep 5 @ 10:27 PM EDT
R3: So there is active looking and passive looking for creativity. Sometimes just reading and sitting here looking at tweets creates new ideas. Sometimes I go and watch others, talk to them, explore and prod. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Sep 5 @ 10:27 PM EDT
That understanding is KEY! Creativity comes in all shapes and sizes. Stretching my comfort zones also fosters more creativity in daily activities. #IDedchat
    In reply to @kriss_kelsey

    In reply to @tracyscottkelly, @Postit
  • AprilJNiemela Sep 5 @ 10:28 PM EDT
You are so engaged and invested in all things education. I am constantly in awe of your thoughtful responses and your crazy response time. You are a FAST thinker! (I'm still contemplating the first word and you have an entire response typed out!) #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach, @elalitcoach
  • WinkelerD Sep 5 @ 10:28 PM EDT
Creativity happens at the oddest times and when you aren't being intentional about it. #idedchat
    In reply to @rhonda_urquidi
  • averyteach - Moderator Sep 5 @ 10:29 PM EDT
Thanks April - Twitter is definitely a spot that allows for constant reflective thinking. This introvert can thrive here. :-) #IDedchat
    In reply to @AprilJNiemela, @elalitcoach
  • tracyscottkelly Sep 5 @ 10:29 PM EDT
A3. I used to give that part to an aide. But then I realized that I was short changing myself. I change the look of my room every year, which naturally changes how I lead and guide my classroom. Creativity builds creativity! #IDedchat
  • AprilJNiemela Sep 5 @ 10:29 PM EDT
it's amazing what "down time" or time out in nature can accomplish, especially in terms of inspiration, motivation, and creativity! #IDedchat
    • rhonda_urquidi Sep 5 @ 10:27 PM EDT
For me, creative energy comes from unexpected directions. Time outside of the crucible, really. While running, showering, driving, gives me some of that percolating time . . . then I'm ready to dig in and find flow! #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Sep 5 @ 10:29 PM EDT
R3: speaking of podcasts, one of my favs is from @CADPODCAST1. @letscreatemoore and @williamastein drop a podcast every other week. They are around 1/2 hr and always have ideas about great educational topics. Highly recommend. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Sep 5 @ 10:31 PM EDT
Q4: What do we want students to understand about creativity? #IDedchat
  • QuarryAmy Sep 5 @ 10:31 PM EDT
I absolutely agree with you, Rhonda. #idedchat
    In reply to @rhonda_urquidi
  • WinkelerD Sep 5 @ 10:32 PM EDT
A4: That creativity comes in all forms. Like @LCHS_Bio said. It can be expressed in the form of a cake, or a flipgrid if needed. Or something done on Canvas. #idedchat
  • tracyscottkelly Sep 5 @ 10:32 PM EDT
@averyteach I need to run. I have a book to digest, #StoriesInEDU. Very inspirational. Check out the cover when you get a chance. Thanks again for the tag tonight. I will catch up later, or in a more creative way. #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Sep 5 @ 10:33 PM EDT
R4: there is nothing wrong with being creative. Nothing. If it works for you, then it is alright. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Sep 5 @ 10:33 PM EDT
A4: I want students to understand that creativity looks different for everyone - that it can be messy - but that it can lead to great questions and even greater solutions. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Sep 5 @ 10:34 PM EDT
I still need to get my copy! #idedchat
    In reply to @tracyscottkelly, @averyteach
  • kriss_kelsey Sep 5 @ 10:35 PM EDT
A4: First and foremost, I want my students to know that each and everyone of them is creative. I want them to know that they can rely on and celebrate their own unique minds. Creativity is not limited to the arts, they can be creative in math too! #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • QuarryAmy Sep 5 @ 10:36 PM EDT
A4: Students should know that each one them are uniquely creative. That we ALL can tap into our own creativity, through exploration and practice. #idedchat
  • AprilJNiemela Sep 5 @ 10:36 PM EDT
Q4 Creativity doesn't happen in isolation. It happens when we're exposed to a broad range of ideas & concepts & perspectives & modalities. We can't be creative in a vacuum. Part 1 #IDEdChat
  • AprilJNiemela Sep 5 @ 10:37 PM EDT
Q4 I also want all learners to know that we CAN be introverts & be creative. The diversity of views & perspectives, the cross pollination & transdisciplinary learning -- this can come from books & video & twitter & other non-traditional forms of interaction. #IDEdChat
  • rhonda_urquidi Sep 5 @ 10:37 PM EDT
Students need to feel the mess of creativity, and get comfortable with that. This makes me wonder if creativity leads to understanding the gray areas of life, where its controversial, not black or white. #idedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Sep 5 @ 10:38 PM EDT
@AprilJNiemela says it well that creativity isn’t done in isolation. That’s why creativity and innovation go hand in hand. #IDedchat
  • AprilJNiemela Sep 5 @ 10:38 PM EDT
Celebrating each student's unique mind and creativity will beget greater risk-taking and creativity! #IDedchat

Messiness - where deep learning occurs! I think that the struggle (productive) that can come with that mess would help clear the fog of the "gray" areas. I wonder if civil discourse would be more prominent if we could live in the gray. #IDedchat

      In reply to @AprilJNiemela, @averyteach
  • rhonda_urquidi Sep 5 @ 10:41 PM EDT
Yes, maybe it goes back and forth, like a pool or pools one dips into. Sometimes alone, other times, with others, often in learning from seeing. #IDedchat
    In reply to @AprilJNiemela
  • LCHS_Bio Sep 5 @ 10:41 PM EDT
Sometimes creativity has hiccups, roadblocks, detours, and dead ends. That’s ok. We also need to demonstrate how these are ok for our students. It should be modeled. Time needs to be given for this also. #IDedchat

  • averyteach - Moderator Sep 5 @ 10:46 PM EDT
A5: Critical Thinking - when we ask students to be problem solvers...or find new problems to solve...or to look at a situation through different lenses - Creative solutions can result. #IDedchat
  • kriss_kelsey Sep 5 @ 10:46 PM EDT
A5: When we think critically, we cannot only rely on hard facts. We must bring in our thoughts and experiences to relate to the questions and our thinking. We have to be creative in order to find answers and solutions. #IDedchat

Yes - and working collaboratively will bring many "experiences" to the table that will help bring multiple perspectives to finding answers. #IDedchat

  • LCHS_Bio Sep 5 @ 10:48 PM EDT
Again, critical thinking is a skill that some of it students lack because they have been told exactly what to do every second of their schooling in the past. We need to help educate students on these skills by modeling. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Sep 5 @ 10:49 PM EDT
Agreed Kevin - this is where modeling and scaffolding comes into play. #IDedchat

Q6: How do you model creativity and critical thinking for your students/staff (depending on your role). #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Sep 5 @ 10:50 PM EDT
A6: I model creativity by not having "cookie cutter" activities for the students to work on. #idedchat
  • WinkelerD Sep 5 @ 10:51 PM EDT
A6: I continually switch things up from one year to the next as I am always dreaming up of new activities. Currently trying to put one on paper this evening in fact! #idedchat

Q5 Critical thinking is the sister to creativity. Choosing, weighing, evaluating . . . needed. #idedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Sep 5 @ 10:52 PM EDT
R6: I try not to give examples and tell Ss they can’t use their phones, google, or devices to come up with their plan. #IDedchat

Q5 Critical thinking is the sister to creativity. Choosing, weighing, evaluating . . . needed. #idedchat
  • AprilJNiemela Sep 5 @ 10:52 PM EDT
Yes! Modeling is incredibly important. Our transparency (paired with our vulnerability) creates a powerful message for students. #IDedchat

Q6 I can accept critical thinking as we use a lens of improving together. We are looking at this piece, as kind of this "other" outside from ourselves, and together we find spots to polish or change. #idedchat
  • kriss_kelsey Sep 5 @ 10:54 PM EDT
A6: I think it is difficult to know when you’re modeling it. We have to be creative and encourage creativity in order for that to come through in the classroom. I think the more that it is celebrated, the more it will just happen. #IDedchat

Q6 I share my writing and my process. I value sharing that to model, but it's hard to be vulnerable. #idedchat

This is probably the anti statement to modeling; however, there is a culture of googling/YouTubing that allows Ss to find an answer that has been used before. Sometimes we have to let Ss use the other 3Cs to help drive their creativity that doesn’t revolve around tech. #IDedchat

R6: I try not to give examples and tell Ss they can’t use their phones, google, or devices to come up with their plan. #IDedchat

Celebrating what you wish to see is a type of modeling in itself. You are just acknowledging students as the models. :-) #IDedchat

Exactly! And yet. Empowered creativity means that we are gathering AND harnessing vast insights, perspectives, approaches, experiences in order to make forward movement -- and ultimately to innovate! #IDedchat
