Hello everyone and welcome to tonight's #P12Leaders Chat. We're honored to have special guest @Wes_Kieschnick here to talk about Creating Bold Schools.
My name is Weston, I'm from Denver, CO and I love teaching! Seriously...it's a problem. I am also the author of a little book called #BoldSchool! John Hattie calls it "An essential part of every educator's toolbox." #P12Leaders Check it out here: https://t.co/BnLV0P3WE1
Jeremy in Connecticut, parent who works in education. I'm intrigued by the "digital age" topic... just participated in my third #digcitsummit. #P12Leaders
Q1 is coming up in 2 minutes #P12Leaders! All of tonight's questions will guide us toward the capacity to provide BOLD leadership in an ever changing #edtech landscape.
Q1: BOLD leaders are often guided by words of wisdom. Is there a quote or mantra you believe best articulates your leadership style or leadership goals? Share! #P12Leaders

A1: A leaders is one who knows the way, goes the way, shows the way and grows each day. #p12leaders .@casas_jimmy really helped me reflect on my leadership style and to do what is best for every student, every day, whatever it takes.
A1 Interesting... I have faith in the people I work with, so usually "What do you propose?" when asked a question. But if ready to move on... "What's next?" #p12leaders
Absolutely! Shared leadership means shared ownership, shared investment. Everyone has a stake in the pot and will work harder to get things done. How willing are those you work with to share leadership with you? #P12Leaders
A2: my high school principal. He is an amazing person who loved his students & the relatoinships he built were amazing. I treat my Ss the same way I felt I was treated in HS. #P12Leaders

A2 My mentor growing up, a school custodian, taught me a love of computers, knowledge, and helping others. I'm a technology leader now because of him. #P12Leaders
Love that. Can be hard to keep perspective fresh. Seem we believe someone=onboarded fully when they work "in" the system. Can b perverse incentives for new leaders #P12Leaders
A1: @EducationGalaxy Lift Off has helped our struggling 3rd graders. In math, Ss have answered 12,995 questions with 85% accuracy! As the principal, I have easy access to this data! #edgalchat
A2: Iâm such a believer we are the average of the leaders we surround ourselves with most. A residue of excellence or mediocrity is bound to rub off. Iâm constantly seeking excellence and trying to leave positivity in my wake. #P12Leaders
A2: My father has been a leader who has inspired me. As a teacher and administrator for over 35 years he modeled for me what it meant to be and administrator, teacher, mentor and coach. I try my best to mentor and guide teachers and students the way he still does! #p12leaders
Q3: In the digital age, what role do you believe modeling plays in cultivating systemic success? What are you doing (if anything) to model the behaviors you want to see in fellow educators? #P12Leaders
A2: the leader who has impacted me the most is @pammoran because of willingness to take risks, create new paths, have courageous conversations, & do whatâs best for kids #P12Leaders

A3: We expect students to learn something new every day, why not hold that same expectation for adults. Teachers have to use technology! No more excuses! #P12Leaders
A3: Being a learner through my PLN is something I model with with my staff. Modeling various apps in our 1:1 environment and providing PD for teachers is something I hope will cultivate student and teacher success. #p12leaders
A3: too often we block things instead of teaching Ss how to interact with society. I show my instagram, twitter feeds and Facebook to share the difference between personal & school life. #P12Leaders
A2: My high school #teacher ~ Mary R. was a leader in the school, as a mother, and as a person of inspiration making the act of paying it forward in the same field, and easy choice. #p12leaders
A3 As a technology leader, I am focusing on modeling safe online practices this year. Keep my staff and students safe both at work and in their lives elsewhere. No ransomware here! #edtech#P12Leaders
HUGE role! Iď¸ have changed my faculty meetings in order to model more. Iď¸ now use each months meeting to model an effective teaching strategy that my Ts can put into place in the classroom. âlaundry listâ of faculty mtg highlights is sent out in Google Slide format. #P12Leaders
A3: Being a learner through my PLN is something I model with with my staff. Modeling various apps in our 1:1 environment and providing PD for teachers is something I hope will cultivate student and teacher success. #p12leaders
A3 - We believe modeling to be an integral instructional strategy; but it isn't effective without allowing opportunities for collaboration and mastery. #p12leaders
Q3. We notice and work on developing leader imagination for the very reason that modeling is so powerful and often what we dream up is limited by what we've seen. #P12Leaders

A3: Modeling is critical for any successful leader. That is especially true in the #edtech space. If you don't know it...you can't grow it! #P12Leaders
A2: Honestly...there are so many. Which makes me realize how fortunate I am to have people around me who inspire and empower me. I pay it forward by believing in people and empowering them to lead!#P12Leaders
A3: Not âwalking the walkâ immediately decreases your impact. Iâm trying to promote tech in the classroom through digital book studies and a virtual staff lounge! #P12Leaders
Q3: In the digital age, what role do you believe modeling plays in cultivating systemic success? What are you doing (if anything) to model the behaviors you want to see in fellow educators? #P12Leaders
Q4: I believe masterful #P12Leaders embrace a culture of âandâ. That is to say, they embrace old school teaching/wisdom AND innovative tools/practices. Agree or disagree? Why? #P12Leaders

Like #coding , make sure to model the creative problem solving strategies and support people as they try, fail, try, and succeed in those strategies. It's OK to fail, just try again! #P12Leaders
A4-Itâs absolutely essential for both to hold their place in line. There is tons of knowledge in tried and true practices, and the benefits of technology is w/o question. The magic is in the blending. #p12Leaders
A3. Another thing we try to model about modeling (getting meta) is to be explicit about what we are modeling - not just using osmosis as transfer strategy. #P12Leaders
#P12Leaders I model by trying to use new technology and not being afraid to admit I don't have all the answers. . . yet. I show them I am constantly learning.

A4: Agree. With experience, you know that many problems are simply a break down in communication. Just talk to each other to solve problems. The tech part simply takes communication to a whole new level. #P12Leaders
Q2: The leader that impacts me the most is my father. He continues to teach me how to be a man/father. I pay it forward by setting his example at home for my kids as well as work for my colleagues. #P12Leaders
A3: As a 1st year administrator I realize that I am gaining and learning new experiences everyday. So I model positive behaviors. I smile. I shake hands. I try to laugh with people. I know I can model those things. #P12Leaders
A3. Another thing we try to model about modeling (getting meta) is to be explicit about what we are modeling - not just using osmosis as transfer strategy. #P12Leaders
A4: Embracing a culture of "and" is just as critical as creating a #cultureofyes. Encouraging students and staff to use technology AND continue to create, innovate, collaborate and assess is vital. We cannot stifle their growth. Say yes and watch them go! #p12leaders

Q5: Initiatives canât survive in a culture of negativity. What are you doing to cultivate a culture of positivity in a digital environment wrought with potholes and the potential for frustration? #P12Leaders
A4 Recognizing the strengths in others allows the "and" to be shaped into a "fundamental knowledge" that can assist and improve upon any "innovative" tool/practice. There is great wisdom in experience. #p12leaders

Yet challenging. Have to get buy-in both up and down the board, from paras up to supers. Plus students, parents... Just keep encouraging failure and attempts. People will get it. #P12Leaders
#P12Leaders I definitely agree. I use the modeling format in teaching science and it is a format that works; blending tech when it makes sense makes it even better.
A5. Constant, positive, transparent streams of information/communication. Create a solid "elevator speech" that all supporters can use to help sell the initiative. #p12leaders
Q5: Initiatives canât survive in a culture of negativity. What are you doing to cultivate a culture of positivity in a digital environment wrought with potholes and the potential for frustration? #P12Leaders
A5:It begins with building relationships, being supportive, encourage risk-taking, model whenever you can and most importantly, listen. Listen to the needs of the staff and students and adjust accordingly. Grow with them. #P12Leaders
A4: Absolutely agree. There needs to be a balance between exploration and exploitation. It's important to have a solid foundation that works and a growth mindset. #P12Leaders
A5 So much this. @E_Sheninger tweeted a great quote abt this today saying w/o instr design, tech just spreads failure more quickly. That is deeply butchered quote but point is what works works, whether old or new. #p12leaders
Absolutely! Just make sure to reinforce the wisdom while not letting it rule the direction - naysayers should be heard, but not allowed to dictate because of fear of change. Change is hard. What can your experience bring to the table to help us be successful? #P12Leaders
#P12Leaders I definitely agree. I use the modeling format in teaching science and it is a format that works; blending tech when it makes sense makes it even better.
Q4: I agree. Bc teachers really students first. One can never stop learning. With technology, things are always improving challenging new technology advances. The learning opportunities are endless. #P12Leaders
A5 Model: smile, listen, validate, support them! Celebrate Mondayâs, acknowledge each other, each day is a new day, make the most of them. Keep putting positive messages in front of them. #P12Leaders
A5-Itâs vital to remember that âCulture trumps Strategyâ, and to chunk learning, demonstrating an understanding that tech proficiency is personal. The turtle wins the race every time the story is told.#p12Leaders
Q5: Initiatives canât survive in a culture of negativity. What are you doing to cultivate a culture of positivity in a digital environment wrought with potholes and the potential for frustration? #P12Leaders
You know Nick, you're right. You really can't underestimate the importance of a good elevator speech. If you can succinctly tell your story and create buy-in...it has huge value. #P12Leaders

Q5: Initiatives canât survive in a culture of negativity. What are you doing to cultivate a culture of positivity in a digital environment wrought with potholes and the potential for frustration? #P12Leaders
A5: I decide to be positive & make that decision daily. I try not to be around the negativity. I use mySs to promote trying different things. But ultimately it is my choice to be positive daily. #P12Leaders
a5. At some point, the system will reach a critical mass of positive supporters over their negative counterparts. Never forget to show gratitude to those supporting new initiatives. #p12leaders

I believe the negativity often times comes from lack of guidance of the goals. How will this benefit the Ss and Ts in the future. What do people want out of it? #P12Leaders
A5: foster a culture of continuous learning and trust - teachers and students should feel safe to try new things and âfailâ their way to new learning #P12Leaders
Helping folks to arrive at conclusion that it doesn't work is the bugaboo, though isn't it? Enter: relationships and great crucial conversation skills. #P12Leaders

A5 Celebrate successes. We promote student and teacher success using our district hashtag #peqpantherpride . It allows us to reinforce others, and each other. Self perpetuating focus on the positivity, not negativity. #P12Leaders
A6. We work every day to make the system a better place for kids. A place kids want to be. A place kids feel safe to learn and be vulnerable. Baby steps in the continual improvement process! #p12leaders
A5: I think it comes down to the reactions when a problem occurs. I try to react as calm and positive as possible. I need to let people know that it's going to be okay!#P12Leaders
A6 Great challenges, but great opportunities as well. The glacial pace of change in education is finally shifting to keep up with the times. As leaders it is our responsibility to stay out in front of it and support others in their successes. #P12Leaders

A6: At some point, P-12 education will have to embrace on-line learning as a viable means for providing instruction. The brick and mortar education philosophy simply protects the status quo. #P12Leaders

And failure to engage teachers in meaningful dialog to set direction and goals so their insight is honored and relationships among them nurtured! #P12Leaders
A6-We donât know what it holds for us collectively, however, individually, we can each define our efforts to impact children to be better. #p12leaders
A6: Continued support for all, a place for Ss to be kids, forced risk taking in a safe place....that is my goal for my classroom now and in the future #P12Leaders
A5: Initiatives CAN'T survive in a culture of negativity. To counter that, it's important to leverage #technology to expose the unexposed and celebrate those uncelebrated. #p12leaders
A6: We don't know what the future holds in #edtech. It will likely be amazing. That said, we have to build our future on the bedrock of high effect-size strategies and relationships, and then use those amazing tools to improve both. #P12Leaders
We must strive to stay in front and guide our Ts. Kids deserve the best of us and the best education! Relationships will always be at the core of what we do! #P12Leaders

Q5: nothing survives in a culture of negativity. Leadership should always consult its stakeholders. Everyone wants to feel a part of the team. #P12Leaders
A7:Strive to learn each day, never fear failure, put yourself out there, believe in your people, have high expectations for yourself, your staff and your students. #P12Leaders
A7 Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and take a risk supporting others. Be honest with yourself and others and people will respect you for it. Sometimes you'll fail; recover and try again. And celebrate the successes of your staff - they will celebrate you! #P12Leaders
A7: Be open to communication, leave the micromanaging at the door, realize not everything works for everyone, provide multiple opportunities to learn, be flexible and say yes when you can. #P12Leaders

A6: A future that breaks down the walls of a classroom and traditional learning styles. I try to teach the fundamentals and encourage risk. #P12Leaders
A6: The future of #education is both frightening and exciting. Frightening because of external influences that no longer places education as a priority. Exciting because of the optimism it causes for those who DO prioritize education. #p12leaders
A6: fewer walls, more individualized instruction, more hands on learning experiences - we can support by having crucial conversations, being open to possibilities, keeping current on whatâs happening and available #P12Leaders
A7: Never let fear guide your decision making. It moves you away from progress and buries you beneath a mountain of crippling inaction. Stagnant "success" is bad for teachers and worse for kids. #P12Leaders

Any tech doesn't have to be anti-relationship. Just have to have clear vision of how to use as a tool to draw folks close. Used Padlet and FlipGrid a few weeks back for a remote team mtg. It was a â¤ď¸fest. #P12Leaders
Q8: Albert Einstein once said, âIf youâre not learning, youâre dying.â How will you continue to learn and grow in environments where information is more readily available than itâs ever been? #P12Leaders
