Scott here for a bit of #scitlap from Albany, NY. Favorite branch varies but love cognitive science and paleontology. Love stuff like gravitational waves too.
Hi #scitlap ! My name is Emily and I am still in school studying education and kinesiology. My favorite branch of science that I have studied is biology. #edfb4338
A1 We spend a lot of time on this during the first weeks of school. Ss want to go, go, go and not be careful. I like to tell stories about the importance of reporting mistakes. Silly Putty, Post It's, and potato chips. #scitlap
A1 I think MS kiddos just need repeated practice. When their experiment flops because they didn't measure correctly they learn real quick to be more careful. Lots of practice and modeling is important. #scitlap
A1 I let them fail at an experiment. I have a few that if they don't measure correctly it doesn't turn out right. Attention to detail is important in many facets of science. #scitlap
A2 Although we teach Science, it is not all we do anymore. I spend a lot of more time focused on goal setting, SEL and building them up. MS kiddos need to be excited about science so more will pursue it in the future. #scitlap
yes, I am excited to try out the experiment that @daleyscience shared with me to make a rainbow in test tubes. That should help with precision #scitlap
A2 Much of what I do is not teach science. I work on developing Ss sense of self-worth, acceptance, and caring. So much more. Sci is second and means to teach other human/soft skills. #scitlap
Did I mention I teach 8th grade?
A2 So many jobs....teacher, entertainer, counselor, fan, protector, advocate, role model. Just like that famous "what do you make" story. Our job is so much more than teaching a lesson. #scitlap
A3 I feel like when I moderate #scitlap, this always ends up being one of my questions. This is my biggest struggle, not only balancing, but getting things done. My to-do list is always lengthy, and I always feel defeated. #scitlap
A3 Balance, what's that. I don't think I will ever be 50/50 but I do try to take time to do things I want to do. The problem is I like going to conferences, workshops and planning. #scitlap
Me too, I have become a PD addict. I love all that stuff too. It ends up taking up a lot of time and pulls me away from family. Even if Im just using my iPad while watching TV. I need to set some parameters for myself! #scitlap
Yes me too. Right now it is just my husband and dog, so I don't have as many demands on my time. I think if that changes, my balance will shift for sure. #scitlap
A3P2: Set goals and prioritize. Might be a bit cliche but it works. My primary teaching goal is to make sure I'm all set for the next day's lesson. Then worry about the next. #scitlap
There is so much stuff I say NO to. Some of it is really cool stuff too! but I know my limits and don't want to commit to something I can't follow through on. #scitlap
A3 I have tried to be more available at night to relax. Speaking of that my hubs just got home from class so I am going to spend a little time with him before bed. Night #scitlap
I function a lot by just taking things one at a time. I feel good when I accomplish something....but there is always so many goals I set for myself. I have to do it in bite-size parts. #scitlap
A4 Safety rules enforced obviously, but mostly think of my room as a safe place for friendship, exploring, risk-taking with learning/communicating. My room is warm and inviting and a place kids love to come to. Just had former Ss in my room yesterday, talking about that #scitlap
30 students is WAY too many. Wish we weren't so helpless with that issue. I was just saying my 26 kids in inclusion was way too big today. It's really hard to keep that stuff from happening. Too many bodies! #scitlap
A5 I'm so bad at this. I got some advice from my son the other day, who is at the same school. Mom, you should do it like a Mr. @JesseGreenej Lol. #scitlap
A5 Bins certain labs and stuff by topic as well stored away. I have lab tables with cabinets full of materials. I have Ss get out what they need (tbb, graduated cylinders, etc.) #scitlap
We have a storage hallway that needs organizing. Some stuff is in my room, some out there. Wish I could hire HGTV to remodel everything. Need to be better about managing materials. Kids leave stuff everywhere! We are always too busy having fun and forget about the bell. #scitlap
A6 Think this is something that is upcoming with our new Super. He already has emphasized modeling (woohoo!) and seems very interested in fostering positive school culture. #scitlap
A1 My teachers would also say some silly story about an experiment going wring becuase of an incorrect measurement or misread directions. She would always add a little step at the end of the directions to make sure we read them fully #scitlap#edfb4338
A6 So, I'm excited about this. I recently shared some CER stuff with Social St, ELA, and math. They loved it and all agreed to use same language in their classes. #scitlap
Kids also get a little embarrassed when they mess up and fail at something that most students are understanding. This will make sure they pay attention to every detail next time. #scitlap#edfb4338
CTA: Still thinking about it. I have a few ideas but I'm working in a new storyline on gasses next week. Lots of whiteboarding at the moment for Ss. That tends to run its course pretty quick. Need the lab piece. #scitlap
My weakness is in instructing them how to write the reasoning piece. I found sentence starts and my ELA team-mate will work with Ss on this. I'm so thrilled to collaborate with her. #scitlap
CTA: My next lab will be stations for types of energy. I will definitely work on both the planning and clean-up aspect. Both will help me find balance and a little extra wiggle room with time! #scitlap
Thanks everyone!!!!
Q3P2 - this is something I need to hear for myself as well, but it is totally acceptable to say no to dinners, events, and hanging out. Even if saying "no" means that you just want to relax at home and destress from your day and cuddle your dog. #scitlap#edfb4338
