    Welcome to #SCITLAP
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:00 PM EDT
    Introduce yourself! #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:02 PM EDT
Hi everyone, I teach 7th grade science. My favorite branch of science is biology (ecology), with physics as a second. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:03 PM EDT
Scott here for a bit of #scitlap from Albany, NY. Favorite branch varies but love cognitive science and paleontology. Love stuff like gravitational waves too.
  • vballem3 Oct 17 @ 9:03 PM EDT
Hi #scitlap ! My name is Emily and I am still in school studying education and kinesiology. My favorite branch of science that I have studied is biology. #edfb4338
  • MrsAsztalos Oct 17 @ 9:04 PM EDT
Hello #scitlap. Melissa, 7th Grade Science T from NY. I am a Biologist at heart who loves Genetics who teaches Chemistry and Physics topics.

Cool favorites, thanks for being here! #scitlap

Ahhh, genetics! I lost the topic with shifts in state standards. It was always so fun to teach. Lots of aha moments. #scitlap

Yes it is what I miss teaching the most when I switched jobs. I used to do a really cool adaptations project that I really miss doing. #scitlap

A1 We spend a lot of time on this during the first weeks of school. Ss want to go, go, go and not be careful. I like to tell stories about the importance of reporting mistakes. Silly Putty, Post It's, and potato chips. #scitlap
  • MrsAsztalos Oct 17 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1 I think MS kiddos just need repeated practice. When their experiment flops because they didn't measure correctly they learn real quick to be more careful. Lots of practice and modeling is important. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:11 PM EDT
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A1 I let them fail at an experiment. I have a few that if they don't measure correctly it doesn't turn out right. Attention to detail is important in many facets of science. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Tweetdeck is not cooperating tonight. #scitlap
  • MrsAsztalos Oct 17 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A2 Although we teach Science, it is not all we do anymore. I spend a lot of more time focused on goal setting, SEL and building them up. MS kiddos need to be excited about science so more will pursue it in the future. #scitlap
  • MrsAsztalos Oct 17 @ 9:12 PM EDT
yes it is very laggy tonight! so annoying #scitlap
    In reply to @pentaclethra
  • MrsAsztalos Oct 17 @ 9:13 PM EDT
yes, I am excited to try out the experiment that @daleyscience shared with me to make a rainbow in test tubes. That should help with precision #scitlap

  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:13 PM EDT
Those were the words I was looking for...."attention to detail" The middle schoolers arch-enemy. #scitlap
    In reply to @pentaclethra
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A2 Much of what I do is not teach science. I work on developing Ss sense of self-worth, acceptance, and caring. So much more. Sci is second and means to teach other human/soft skills. #scitlap Did I mention I teach 8th grade?
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:14 PM EDT
It's a good one. I love tricking them into learning!! #scitlap

  • MrsAsztalos Oct 17 @ 9:16 PM EDT
Yes, they seem to think that fast is better. They learn real quick it take twice as long when I make them do it over. #scitlap

A2 So many jobs....teacher, entertainer, counselor, fan, protector, advocate, role model. Just like that famous "what do you make" story. Our job is so much more than teaching a lesson. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A3 haha, balancing is my biggest struggle. That and not going crazy on a daily basis. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A3 I feel like when I moderate #scitlap, this always ends up being one of my questions. This is my biggest struggle, not only balancing, but getting things done. My to-do list is always lengthy, and I always feel defeated. #scitlap
  • MrsAsztalos Oct 17 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A3 Balance, what's that. I don't think I will ever be 50/50 but I do try to take time to do things I want to do. The problem is I like going to conferences, workshops and planning. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:21 PM EDT

    Q3 Part 2 #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Me too, I have become a PD addict. I love all that stuff too. It ends up taking up a lot of time and pulls me away from family. Even if Im just using my iPad while watching TV. I need to set some parameters for myself! #scitlap
    In reply to @MrsAsztalos
  • MrsAsztalos Oct 17 @ 9:24 PM EDT
Yes me too. Right now it is just my husband and dog, so I don't have as many demands on my time. I think if that changes, my balance will shift for sure. #scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A3 Part 2. I am giving this advice to all of us, including myself. It is okay to say no sometimes. Self! Do you hear me? #scitlap :)
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A3P2: Set goals and prioritize. Might be a bit cliche but it works. My primary teaching goal is to make sure I'm all set for the next day's lesson. Then worry about the next. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:27 PM EDT
There is so much stuff I say NO to. Some of it is really cool stuff too! but I know my limits and don't want to commit to something I can't follow through on. #scitlap

  • MrsAsztalos Oct 17 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A3 I have tried to be more available at night to relax. Speaking of that my hubs just got home from class so I am going to spend a little time with him before bed. Night #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:29 PM EDT
I function a lot by just taking things one at a time. I feel good when I accomplish something....but there is always so many goals I set for myself. I have to do it in bite-size parts. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:30 PM EDT

    Hi @HowardKiyuna what's shakin'? #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A4 It does NOT look like the 30 Ss in period 3. Already 3 broken beakers, and various burnings (pencils on hotplates). #scitlap
  • HowardKiyuna Oct 17 @ 9:32 PM EDT
Feels like the living room and the garage. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A4 Safety rules enforced obviously, but mostly think of my room as a safe place for friendship, exploring, risk-taking with learning/communicating. My room is warm and inviting and a place kids love to come to. Just had former Ss in my room yesterday, talking about that #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:35 PM EDT
30 students is WAY too many. Wish we weren't so helpless with that issue. I was just saying my 26 kids in inclusion was way too big today. It's really hard to keep that stuff from happening. Too many bodies! #scitlap

No easy solutions either. We keep working at it and working with what we have. All we can do. #scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • HowardKiyuna Oct 17 @ 9:37 PM EDT
I’ve created a culture in 7 weeks where my Ss raise their had and say they don’t have a clue what I’m teaching. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A5 I'm so bad at this. I got some advice from my son the other day, who is at the same school. Mom, you should do it like a Mr. @JesseGreenej Lol. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:38 PM EDT
It's what we as teachers always do, because we put kids first! It is both a blessing and a curse. #scitlap

A5 Bins certain labs and stuff by topic as well stored away. I have lab tables with cabinets full of materials. I have Ss get out what they need (tbb, graduated cylinders, etc.) #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:42 PM EDT
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:44 PM EDT
We have a storage hallway that needs organizing. Some stuff is in my room, some out there. Wish I could hire HGTV to remodel everything. Need to be better about managing materials. Kids leave stuff everywhere! We are always too busy having fun and forget about the bell. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:44 PM EDT
A6 Think this is something that is upcoming with our new Super. He already has emphasized modeling (woohoo!) and seems very interested in fostering positive school culture. #scitlap
  • vballem3 Oct 17 @ 9:44 PM EDT
A1 My teachers would also say some silly story about an experiment going wring becuase of an incorrect measurement or misread directions. She would always add a little step at the end of the directions to make sure we read them fully #scitlap #edfb4338
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:45 PM EDT
A6 So, I'm excited about this. I recently shared some CER stuff with Social St, ELA, and math. They loved it and all agreed to use same language in their classes. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:46 PM EDT
I make sure I have them clean up. Too many other preps and Ss coming in. They lose HP in #classcraft if they don't clean up as well. #scitlap

    Tricky! Lol. #scitlap

  • vballem3 Oct 17 @ 9:47 PM EDT
Kids also get a little embarrassed when they mess up and fail at something that most students are understanding. This will make sure they pay attention to every detail next time. #scitlap #edfb4338
    In reply to @MrsAsztalos
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:47 PM EDT
The language in common core and NGSS is similar/same for CER. Bit different but similar enough that it requires just a bit of reteaching. #scitlap

@vballem3 What grade/subject are you wanting to teach? Just curious! #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:50 PM EDT
CTA: Still thinking about it. I have a few ideas but I'm working in a new storyline on gasses next week. Lots of whiteboarding at the moment for Ss. That tends to run its course pretty quick. Need the lab piece. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:50 PM EDT
My weakness is in instructing them how to write the reasoning piece. I found sentence starts and my ELA team-mate will work with Ss on this. I'm so thrilled to collaborate with her. #scitlap
    In reply to @pentaclethra
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:51 PM EDT
I think everyone (including teachers) struggle with the reasoning piece. #scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:52 PM EDT
CTA: My next lab will be stations for types of energy. I will definitely work on both the planning and clean-up aspect. Both will help me find balance and a little extra wiggle room with time! #scitlap Thanks everyone!!!!
  • pentaclethra Oct 17 @ 9:55 PM EDT
Thank you @daleyscience for leading the chat tonight. Have a great end of your week. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Oct 17 @ 9:57 PM EDT
If anything, tonight's conversation let me know that my struggles aren't much different than others in my field. Thank you @pentaclethra @MrsAsztalos @HowardKiyuna and @VBrasil_ #scitlap
  • vballem3 Oct 17 @ 9:58 PM EDT
Q3P2 - this is something I need to hear for myself as well, but it is totally acceptable to say no to dinners, events, and hanging out. Even if saying "no" means that you just want to relax at home and destress from your day and cuddle your dog. #scitlap #edfb4338
