A1 I used to think engagement meant they were playing the game & having fun, but it is when Ss are invested in the activ b/c authentic, they have a connection to and voice in the learning,
#edugladiators
Hope to see my friends from #PD4uandme and #edugladiators at #altedchat tomorrow night 9est as I moderate a chat all about Finding Gifts, Talents, and Strengths in ALL Students! ❤️🥊 #champforkids
A1 sometimes this buzz can be considered noise/chaos, depending on the class, and that for me was uncomfortable, but now I know differently #edugladiators
A1 - "Engagement isn’t something you can infer from smiling faces or a classroom arrangement. Engagement is what the brain attends to."
https://t.co/qRipGe0M6D#edugladiators
A1 - "The most important aspect of engagement is the mental work you do with the material; attempting to recognize or recall information and apply this knowledge in other scenarios, for example."
https://t.co/qRipGe0M6D#edugladiators
A1) I don't know how to define it, but I know it when I see it. Okay, just a joke. Isn't that a line from Reality Bites? My real answer will be forthcoming. #edugladiators
A1: When students ask themselves and each other questions and reflect upon their interaction with the content or introduction to new skills. #edugladiators
A1: student engagement involves students being actively immersed in an activity but it is important that it is with purpose. I use #minecraft all the time and it can easily look like they are engaged playing a game but there still needs to be an academic goal. #edugladiators
A1 When Ss are truly invested in what they are doing. It's hard to describe what it "looks" like - different for many- but when they chime in w/ "Class is over already?" you know you hit the sweet spot. #edugladiators
I really like this definition, and I always thought that students playing a game, or looking like having fun meant engagement, glad I know better #edugladiators
A1: Engagement is more a frame of mind than a “look” I think. I could have a silent students engrossed in a task and one frantically working and displaying enthusiasm both engaged. I think that “engaged looks like” idea leads to a lot of misunderstanding. #EduGladiators
A1. Students engaged in conversations directly connected to deepening their own learning. Smiling faces, focus and authentic 4C integration. Students are genuinely sad to hear the bell ring. #EduGladiators
A1: Engagement is very different than simply be on task. Engagement is linked to being interested, having bought in, being excited, seeing the value of something.
#edugladiators
A1) When Ss r engaged, a lot of times there is an excitement, even a certain energy. Some Ss might be so into what they r doing that they have a very serious look on their face. #edugladiators
Many teachers believe that engagement is something you can 'see', but it's not that easy. I can stare at a book but mentally be somewhere else completely. I can appear to be collaborating about material, but be discussing something totally different.
#edugladiators
A1- Student engagement can look different depending on the task but common threads are understanding the 'why', eager to get started and feeling connected to the task/experience at hand. #edugladiators
A1: Engagement is hard to ‘see’ sometimes, its when Ss are thinking, finding/making connections, involved in the lesson mentally, productive struggles with their thinking #EduGladiators
A1 Students joy is the results of their engagement. They need to be motivated by their invovlment into education escpecially when topics are not so motivational. #EduGladiators
A1) When students are engaged there is a sparkle in their eyes that burns with the desire to learn, share, and create new knowledge with others. #EduGladiators
A1 S engagement is a busy interactive scene. Ss are collaborating, questioning, making sense of their learning by supporting their ideas with evidence and reasoning! Ss are excited to be learning and minds are being blown 🤯#edugladiators
A1 - Engagement occurs in the brain...it’s not an outward action, although an action may be a byproduct of mental engagement with material. #edugladiators
A1: Student engagement is when students are all in physically and mentally. There isn’t a constant pull to encourage the engagement, that’s exhausting. They get joy out of learning. Routines, high expectations, and lesson preparation attribute to this. #EduGladiators
agreed, I ask myself why and focus on purpose in what I choose to do, but also share that with the Ss too, so they know it isnt just a random activity! #edugladiators
A1: Student engagement for me looks like students talking, laughing, working, smiling, reading, thinking, writing, asking great questions, etc all around my room. There is an excitement in the air, a curiosity brewing, and Ss are LEANING IN to the learning! #EduGladiators
A2 Ts need to provide a variety of activities, involve Ss more in the discussion and ask for feedback, let Ss lead lessons, if only T is talking, Ss are inactive, passive learners, lose interest fast #edugladiators
A1: Student engagement happens when the learning experience, individual learning styles, knowledge of strengths, and interests intersect. #EduGladiators
Sometimes there is a catalyst that draws students in, for some of mine it was a new game or opp to create on their own and that led to higher engagement #edugladiators
A2 We need to be mindful of making sure Ss have brain breaks, movement. Blood needs to be flowing to keep the brain focused! We need to intentionally plan these breaks in lessons. #edugladiators
Morning, #edugladiators. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. A1 I was *engaged* in making apple muffins this morning, which meant I needed to flex time & arrive late to the chat.
A2) Keep Ss interest in mind when planning; also, adding physical movement, or at least as a component, can help. Give Ss choice; Be clear on the expectations & learning goals. #edugladiators
A2 be sure to check in with Ss, use time to interact with them, get feedback on the learning activities and involve them more in decisions #edugladiators
A2 Also by using a tech tool and basing engagement only on Ss excited to play, rather than the true meaning of engagement, or using 1 tool/methods, as a 1 size fits all #edugladiators
A2: Hot take, I think more than partly the engagement factor falls on Ts. Ss might not buy in but we can start by engaging them in the planning, in the “how” they show their learning. Apathy comes from a sense of lack of choice. Engagement with voice #EduGladiators
A2 providing a variety of activities to engage multiple learning styles is important. It is also critical to allow students to ask questions so they are more a part of the learning #EduGladiators
A2 Ts need to provide a variety of activities, involve Ss more in the discussion and ask for feedback, let Ss lead lessons, if only T is talking, Ss are inactive, passive learners, lose interest fast #edugladiators
A2- If a S needs to be convinced/coerced to learn; if there are elements of "if this doesn't get done, _____ will be the consequence"- these are used when Ss are not engaged - so time for T to ask why? What can I do to ensure Ss are invested? #edugladiators
A1. student engagement is when students are mentally & physically focused on the lesson. They not only receive information but also contribute information to the lesson as well. #EduGladiators
A2. Lack of movement opportunities combined with shifts in activities. Students are more engaged when they are moving and have a variety of learning activities during the lesson. The days of lecture K-12 are over with today's learners. #EduGladiators
A2: if a bulk of students are not engaged we need to give some serious thought to the activity. Teaching is an iterative process. We need to adapt and make changes constantly. We need to truly value feedback from our students #edugladiators
A2 Ss engagement is a result of providing voice and choice, open ended tasks that allow for some productive struggle, time to think independentlyas well as collaborate, and tasks/solutions/products must serve an authentic purpose #edugladiators
A2: Factors that reduce student engagement: talking too much, simply giving busy work (handouts after handouts), not explaining the why, not connecting the content to the real world.
#edugladiators
A2 One-way communication, especially teacher doing something to or for students (rather than with them) undermines engagement. Dialogue is usually more engaging than monologue. #edugladiators
A2: Too much T talk takes Ss out of the learning, must be student-centered, Ss need chunks of info, time to think and process and movement #EduGladiators
Yes! That's so helpful. I like asking their feedback too b/c it's so helpful for planning. We did a writing celebration w/our class & after 1 kiddos said she would have liked to have done it w/another class. That was good feedback for me. #edugladiators
A2 No time for Ss participate, to be involved with the learning. Sharing information from T 2 S is important but 2 much & 4 2long is a killer depending ooage. Get 2 the Why& let the Ss struggle. It's ok, that's where the lerning is. Don't rescue because of time. #edugladiators
A2: Sitting in one place, not having clear expectations/directions for learning, not starting the day by building authentic relationships with your learners... basically by not modeling engagement yourself!! #EduGladiators
definitely must be purposeful and intentional, and we need to reflect as well, just because we think something worked, doesn't mean that it did #edugladiators
Reflection and iteration are powerful! You can see the impact in classrooms where Ts embody these practices vs those that deflect back on to Ss #EduGladiators
Another line of thinking here:
If students don’t have the needed knowledge base to engage with the material, they cannot do so effectively. So, explicit and direct instruction of material may be needed first.

A2 Sometimes I forget that Ss are kids and don’t always know how to do certain things. We need to take the time to teach them HOW in order for Ss to be engaged and successful. #edugladiators
Yet, I would say that a certain amount of frustration is healthy & productive. Ss need to learn how to handle frustration, & it's also where growth can happen. I guess there needs to be a healthy balance. #edugladiators
A2: The number one cause of lack of engagement is teacher apathy towards the lack of engagement itself. Unfortunately, there are some educators in our midst that equate student groaning and eye-rolls with rigor; they frankly don’t care if kids are bored #EduGladiators
2) using their interests... and aiming the learning at the right level. Too high will see students give up and too low will see students be bored #edugladiators
So true! I get a lot of eye rolls, and use that to focus on what I can do to change, to help Ss push through challenges and give them choices #edugladiators
A2: It is all about establishing a classroom culture that supports and encourages engagement. #EveryDay#EveryMinute#EduGladiators
“Every time you connect with someone in your school or community you are building or killing culture.” - @Joe_Sanfelippo
A3 By greeting Ss at the door, playing music, staying positive and excited for teaching and learning, first impression into the classroom, I want Ss to feel welcome and look fwd to learning, being excited to teach them #edugladiators
A2. Teachers may not eliminate or reduce distractions, provide instruction too high or low, do not take into account Ss interest/provide choice, or value “fake” engagement where Ss look engaged but are not actually learning anything (compliance)#EduGladiators
A3: my greatest success has come in Voice and Choice. Letting Ss choose how they best show their learning opens doors to spotlight their talents. Engagements follows. we might need to guide choice can be scary. Like the puppies touching grass for the first time. #EduGladiators
A3- Knowing my learners and providing multiple entry points - coming together to share our thinking- celebrating growth, struggle and different ways of doing things- ensuring all feel valued and heard. #edugladiators
A1: To me, engagement is when students are actively involved in whatever they are learning. This good mean quietly reading an interesting book are an environment of controlled chaos where everyone is participating in a hands-on activity. #edugladiators
A2: We should plan, plan, plan for engagement to avoid a lack of poor student engagement! Students should know the lesson’s standard & expected outcome. Connections throughout the lesson should be made to the standard. #EduGladiators
A3: Clear & meaningful directions. Having a routine also helps as Ss are able to calm down quickly & get to work. Have clear & set expectations & of course, Ss knowing that we can be approached for further clarifications. #EduGladiators
A3: Stand and deliver. Point at a ppt and have students take notes with no interaction or opportunities to engage. #edugladiators Lessons that aren’t interesting or relevant to the Ss.
For sure. The lesson design must consider baseline skills that Ss need to be successful! Otherwise engagement will quickly become frustration! #edugladiators

A3: problem-based learning, Ss have some choice, opportunity to make deep connections w/ content, find multiple ways to solve a problem, share learning/thinking w/ peers, create activities that connect to Ss interests #EduGladiators
A4 It means that while what we teach is important, there needs to be a connection that is more personal, knowing the Ss, and Ss knowing their Ts, more learning can occur #edugladiators
Or explorations to build foundational knowledge and allow Ss to uncover and develop the background before jumping in to the application level! #EduGladiators

A3: Know your students. Provide choice based on your knowledge of students. Build trust, connect, and ensure that kids feel safe (the pyramid of healthy relationships). #EduGladiators
A3 in my archaeology classes, I had students participate in group activities in identifying artifacts and determinig what the artifacts were. The interaction amongst the students in unraveling the puzzle of the artifact was powerful #EduGladiators
A3) Again, by providing S choice; include S's interests; adding a component of physical movement (at least for the littles); if possible, make it social (adding a collaborative piece, etc.). #edugladiators
A3 @KaganOnline aka cooperative learning & having students help peers that are struggling (maybe they can explain it better or in their language) #edugladiators
A2: I would argue that it is never the student's fault. Sometimes the teachers just lack control. Sometimes the material IS boring - but needs to be covered. But, usually, if the teacher is enthusiastic, positive, & keeps things moving, there's engagement. #edugladiators
t does not matter how much we as Ts know about the subjects we teach, we need to know more about the Ss we are teaching, at least that is what I have come to understand more #edugladiators
A1: I believe the way the lesson is initially introduced and presented affects students’ attitudes. If I’m dry and not excited, they won’t be either. Excitement is infectious! #EduGladiators
A1: Student engagement is a combination of attention, effort, interest, and curiosity. The last two feed the first two. When they don't, you have compliance and not engagement. #edugladiators
A4. When the teacher has won the students over, they will do whatever it takes to rise to his/her expectations no matter how high the bar is set. #EduGladiators
A3. Using student choice & assignments with relevant real world situations. Making sure that we are building upon a student’s prior knowledge & where they produce a tangible product in which they are proud of. PBL #EduGladiators
A3 Start from the kid first! Know them, make class a place they feel safe, use great practice, and be open to pushback. Teach respectful dialogue and acknowledge voice. #MUSIC#edugladiators
There’s a time&place for each level of engagement, but the goal should always be to move students towards full ownership of the learning process. It’s not enough to just keep them interested,it’s about teaching them the skills they need to become empowered learners. #EduGladiators
A3) TfEL from South Australia is a great document for promoting learning environments that inspire students and allow them to be the leader of their own journey https://t.co/rzhFYCk6dp#EduGladiators
A3 Using Problem based learning, hands on performance tasks, project based learning, content integration, and connecting with experts in the field to make real 🌎 connections #edugladiators
A3 I get the theory, though I'm still working on the practice: How to support & coach all students to find (then stay in) spots where they experience motivating success even as they continue stretching their abilities. #edugladiators
We need to start with relationships, and then build, a tremendous difference in learning potential, student comfort and our classroom culture #edugladiators
A3 Build relationships with Ss first. If they know you care, they will buy-in to what you're teaching more! I also love using accountable talk to ensure all Ss know how to engage with one another. #EduGladiators
A3.2) Also, I really believe in designing units around big ideas and enduring understandings (total UbD fan here). We shouldn't be teaching content;instead, we should use content2teach those big ideas that extend beyond our classroom and school walls&into the world. #edugladiators
Exactly! I’ve seen it so many times in classrooms. Why are my Ss so confused? Your directions are complicated, that’s why! Using teacher speak instead of scaffolding. #EduGladiators
A3: Lessons that had students moving or talking. I taught HS reading and these Ss loved both! Gallery Walks, Socratic Seminars, Philosophical Chairs, Team Building. Anything that got them up and excited! #edugladiators
A3: This can be accomplished through careful planning (& the grace of higher beings). If the instruction is centered around student interests and real-world relevance, more engagement is likely. Again, teacher's positive energy is also very important. Make it fun! #edugladiators
A4: classrooms that thrive create a safe space for stories to be shared and common ground to be identified. That is where some superb learning can happen! #edugladiators
A4 Getting to know your students needs, concerns, likes helps us to understand the best way to deliver instruction to each individual student. We don't all learn the same. I kneel & work 1-on-1 to help students. #edugladiators
Not a big fan of the two quotes on relationships you've tweeted:
1. I don't care how much you care...I just want to know what you know.
2. Dr. Comer wasn't referring to a teacher-student relationship, he was referring to a relationship with the material.
#edugladiators
A3:Engagement takes place when the learning is relevant to the child. If your goal is to merely increase a metric (i.e. Lexile, State Tests, etc.) the child will never see its inherent value. Metrics are part of good pedagogy, but they aren’t what motivates kids. #EduGladiators
A2: If a teacher is not excited about an activity then the student likely will not be. If a teacher has been doing the exact same activity every year for the last 15 years then I'm pretty sure the excitement is long gone. #EduGladiators
A4 Knowledge doesn't build relationships OR respect. Be human, be kind, know people and be open. They google, youtube anything. They need a caring adult who respects them. And we need that from each other. #edugladiators
A4: Teachers do NOT have to be loved by everyone. Make the goals & connections clear. Sometimes there are basic/fundamental topics that must be covered, even if boring. Ss will complete these tasks if they see/trust the benefits for later. #EduGladiators

In reading workshop my students act out their books. They love it! Not only is it fun for them, it better helps them to engage & connect w/their books. #edugladiators
A3) TfEL from South Australia is a great document for promoting learning environments that inspire students and allow them to be the leader of their own journey https://t.co/rzhFYCk6dp#EduGladiators
A4 if you think about it, our conduct and attitude to our students and society are direct lessons of what it is to be respectful and to collaborate with one another. No matter what subject being taught that is a powerful lesson. #edugladiators
The teacher controls the vibe of the classroom ... if it sucks on a daily basis than that is on you not your Admin ... not your kids... you. #edugladiators
I'd counter: Depends on the metric. i.e., "When we read & review X books, we'll have a pizza party" might be a motivating metric ;) That said, extrinsic motivation is its own dicey proposition! #edugladiators
A4: Love this quote! Building relationships is key. Students don't learn from boring, stuffy, disengaged, disconnected, and negative teachers. Students need to feel wanted, cared about, respected, appreciated, and loved. Students first, personal headaches second. #edugladiators
A2.1: Also, focus on the grade over the learning trickles down. It's hard to engage with a subject matter when all you can think about are how to get enough points. #EduGladiators
A3: I plan lessons that embed student participation: talking, movement, sharing, technology. When my planning omits the forestated, I can tell & feel like I’ve failed my students. They deserve lessons that were planned with their achievement & engagement in mind. #edugladiators
A4 How we behave and carry ourselves within the classroom speaks volumes. Caring, loving, and getting to know our Ss as people first, shapes how the Ss will learn. #EduGladiators
A4) We are in the people business; people first (i.e. Ss first). Bring some of who you r into the classroom; get to know your Ss as people; build relationships w/them & then true learning can happen. #edugladiators
We are doing some global connections this year and Ts and Ss are ❤️❤️❤️ So far we have connected to Zambia 🇿🇲 and France 🇫🇷! Ss are using literacy to peak interest in culture and generating Qs! They are little world travelers without leaving our building! #EduGladiators
Surprisingly, STRUCTURE is the foundation to freedom & empowerment. Sometimes people walk in my class to see students in the “free swim” part of a project and say, “My kids could never...” But it takes a lot of gradual release to get there. #EduGladiatorshttps://t.co/l6JUDemVDr
Although I agree, too many times I’ve seen this mantra used to dismiss even attempting to making a lesson more engaging. Although some concepts lack a certain pizzazz, you best believe I’m going to strive to engage every kid regardless of the fact. #edugladiators

Thanks for the pushback, I keep this in my mind to remind me that I need to build relationships, & my understanding is that Dr. Comer said that relationships & a sense of belonging is what helps Ss become comfortable & motiv to learn #edugladiators I am still learning
Agree and disagree ... Knowledge may not be the most important thing, but the kids have to believe that you know what you are talking about if not there is no amount of hi5s that will make up for teacher content ignorance. #edugladiators
A4: Relationships are the key to a positive classroom culture. I think true engagement comes only when you have established this first. When you build it they will come! ❤️❤️❤️#edugladiators
Thank you for replying...most would just ignore any pushback.
I actually wrote to Dr. Comer and asked him about this:
https://t.co/h8dGD2gUoC#edugladiators
A4 Honestly, the time invested at the beginning of the year in building relationships pays back much in discovering tools that inspire, connecting to their personal interests, even behavior management. (Yes, I connect math to violins for that musical-looking guy.) #EduGladiators

Great #edugladiators chat this morning. Love the different perspectives and value them all. That's how we get better. Thanks, @Rdene915 for the guidance and @mgrosstaylor for the space! AWESOME!
I think we’ve moved beyond this point with Generation Z. The old systems of carrots and sticks just don’t entice like they used to. These kids have been a data point since PreK. Frankly, they’re over it. #EduGladiators
A4. Ss bring many problems to class, we are more than teachers. To actually reach Ss, we have to break through many layers & this is done through forming relationships. This requires understanding your Ss. Ss sleeping in class may have a baby @ home. #EduGladiators
A2 With our interns, we're always reminding them (& us) that plowing through our lessons sometimes leads to kids' apathy. It's when we teach and listen, watch and ask open-ended questions that we discover teaching responsively to meet our kids where they are. #EduGladiators

A4 Sometimes I get wrapped up in the day-to-day & all the "negative" that happens within my classroom, but have to step back & remember that there's more to my Ss than meets the eye. Talking to a Ss for 2 min or telling them you're there for them can a long way. #EduGladiators
I agree to a point: Operant conditioning has never been foundation of rewarding learning relationships. That said, I see possibilities in co-evaluating w/students, based on looking at data together to strategize next steps. Agency in any wielding of carrots/sticks. #edugladiators
A4: I will continue to ensure my students feel comfortable enough to learn from me. I’ll continue to work feverishly to earn their trust & dismantle fear of learning new/challenging skills. Fear can deter learning, but #NotUnderMyWatch! #EduGladiators
Q3: Be so passionate about what you teach & even more passionate about the students you are learning with. That’s the winning combination for magical moments! Embrace the magic! #EduGladiators#LeadLap
This is exactly what I've been trying to keep in mind lately. Our school has started practicing restorative circles with the staff and I am so eager to use it my Ss. That SEL is so key. We have to look beyond what we see on the surface within our classrooms. #EduGladiators
Ignoring is what is comfortable, & I definitely have taken that route before, but I am learning. I did a lot of research on student engagement, motivation, & studied Dr. Comer & others, so that was my interpretation. Thanks for this link, will check it out :) #edugladiators

In my opinion, we should NOT be teaching content;we should be using the content2teach the big ideas that matter. It is the human element that greatly shapes our world, so it is the human element that concerns me the most.#edugladiators
This is the co-planning learning process I teach my students. By the end of the year, this process is internalized and they can use it to learn anything new! #EduGladiators
Truly! I went from having 13-19 Ss in a class, to about 60, to now having 125! It's been such a big jump, & I'm not perfect, but I sure try my best every day & reflect on how I'm doing as a T daily. We should never stop thinking about how we can be there for our Ss #EduGladiators
We don’t know the struggles our kids go through @ home from verbal abuse, neglect, or poor nutrition. Ms. Pozoulakis, keep saving lives because that is exactly what you are doing! The words teacher & lifesaver are synonymous. #EduGladiators
Absolutely. We have differing opinions, & that's fine.I do find some fault in your explanation in your blog post. While it is true that you do not need a relationship to learn, that doesn't negate the power of a strong relationship b/n T&S. Look at Hattie's research.#edugladiators
