A2 encourage adults to observe each other's best practices and to teach/ lead each other.
Collaborative development https://t.co/OibcXWkIJb
A2 encourage adults to observe each other's best practices and to teach/ lead each other.
I think what most of you are talking about is "personal" not "personalized," right?
A2 I love edcamps! Creating opportunities 4 Ts to lead PL. I also like to see Ps leading learning groups https://t.co/zJtHUNzU0Z
A2: think of PD plans like . Let the adults take on an interest or a self-identified problem of practice.
A2 Figure out the school’s goal and your place/role in it. Keeping it student centric what does T need to make it happen?
A2 The autonomy of our PD experiences allow us to make our own choices about how we want to grow. Nothing is more personal.
A2: You can't personalize it for others. That is a contradiction. You personalize for yourself.
A2) Provide adults with choices for projects/assignments. Deliberately help them see the connection to their daily work & lives.
A2: by not over-planning every meeting, and leaving room for authentic debate and discussion within the faculty
YES! We always talk about student voice and choice, Ts should have the same when it comes to PD.
A2: Adults need choice and voice in their learning just like Ss. One size fits all does NOT truly fit.
Me too! Writing in general for me is a great way to really consider change and need https://t.co/rfXAZ1uXTs
Blogging is the time when I slow down & reflect on what I doing.
A2 - allow educators to create alternative pathways to recertification credits and inservice
A2. Encourage risk taking, personalized learning may not seem like traditional learning from the outside. Trust the process.
Ts often wish district inservice/training/PD was personalized instead of mandate/compliance driven. Balance is a nice compromise.
My whole job exists to personalize learning. I am a digital literacy coach for students and teachers alike.
yes! It's important for sts to see teachers learning from each other too!
A2: For this to be successful, there must be a culture of trust and professionalism. Trust me that I am learning my way.
A2 Hate to promote now, but adult Ss desperately need help for their learning life career paths:
Ebook out:

reflection for students or teachers?
A2: Guess I don't understand the question--how can learning be otherwise?
Yes! model provides flexibility & ownership for educators to get what they professionally need!
A2: by asking lots of questions. What do you want to learn? Why? How? What's your goal? With whom? Towards what end?
When working w learners of any age, I use writing territories to help personalize learning. https://t.co/TecUFJEAFG
Good morning Shaelynn from Iowa. Literacy and technology consultant for a region in the state.
I'm working on mine as my stdnts complete theirs! We call our passion projects (cuz I work at Ionia HS)
A2: know the Ts. Know their strengths and weaknesses. Provide opportunities to improve both through options for PD. Relationships.
so interesting. I wonder what happens after the convos start up? That's where some express concern
A2: edcamp style with mentors and research elements
A2) Edcamps, collaborative PD planning, genius hour approach for PD would be amazing--would love my admin to do this
I'm part of we have 15 minute edu chats daily M-F. It's a great way to start your day. https://t.co/Kl7zDDWFAB
Twitter educhats provide collaborative time for start-up conversations.
A2: Creating collaborating atmospheres; providing different paths; providing different options
Absolutely. Often inside ed is same ideas or (gasp) red tape. That doesn't fly w biz. The "test" is survival, lol.
our work al@EDatDU in the Ritchie program for school leaders has been the most relevant work I've done
A2) Through experiences like EdCamps, Twitter Chats, and Podcast we can continue to learn.
My students know what they need. IMO adults don't listen to kids enough
Not on voxer. Will read, reflect and get in touch with you. This is why I love Twitter!
Exactly! Perhaps folks here need to read, Education and Experience, by John Dewey.
https://t.co/fx1lRtYGup
So if I learned something that wasn't immediately relevant but retained it, was I doing it wrong?
A2: Collaborating with teachers on what they need in their classrooms to make them their best, giving resources, help Ts reflect
Relevancy is the key during PD opportunities. A2
A2 professional growth should be about creating opportunities ... Opening doors... Creating better learning experiences for kids
A1:being prin of a mid sch n having all 3 of my boys n middl sch truly gained a parents perspective
agreed. ask myself: Is this working? Why isn't it? Are the kids learning?
A2) Personalized doesn't mean isolated learning, be transparent, connect w/ others that are learning & challenge their thinking
A1 Relevant learning depends on timimg, need, application. Different learning was relevant at diff time for diff reasons
A2 Ts planning and implementing their own PD! Designing PD that is relevant to each.
A2 I learned that via Intel. The hard part is keeping the mission and the people served at the forefront.
A2: I really want to try the pineapple chart so teachers can see the amazing things going on in our own school.
A2: I've been able to personalize my learning exp. w/ Twitter and voxer. Wish I could get more of my colleagues on board!
Q1: Each time Ss or Ts present knowledge, I'm amazed what I learn.
Personal might be my learning how to sail; not terribly relevant in the classroom. Personalized professional learning.
So true Tricia https://t.co/DPuToUvQlD
A2: by not over-planning every meeting, and leaving room for authentic debate and discussion within the faculty
we have to walk the walk and do what we ask them to do or else it becomes less authentic
A2: You can customize learning for Ts, and offer time to allow them to personalize based on that.
love the model bc then we are learning a out things we are interested in and have identified as important
A2 My whole job exists to personalize learning. I am a digital literacy coach for students and teachers alike.
Love that! Ts have a chance to bring that relevancy to teh classroom every day.
I wish Twitter chats could count. Would be much more affordable (and relevant) than most classes taken to earn creds
A2: by giving them what they want &. need. Never understood why districts feel all Ts need same thing when we know all Ss are diff
A2 Recognize learning takes many forms and should "count" as PD, like conferences, meet ups, chats, reading, self-guided programs
A2: Actually listen & use Ts input. Value PD time and not another item to check off. PD should be relevant and help Ts improve.
The principalship is difficult enough without making critical mistakes your first few weeks https://t.co/ZjoxI4BTOl
A2-Personalized learning can be scary bc it may mean admitting what you don't know & taking steps to change it - not always easy
A2: we allow choice. It's the learning that sticks.
Twitter is amazing for PD. Make connections, gather ideas, learn new resources, & build w/those w/ sim interests
Oh boy wouldn't that be nice!
A2: Aren't there parallels between personalizing learning for Ss and for Ts? Voice, choice, relevance, collaboration, reflection.
A2. Encourages Ts to be transparent about their strengths & weaknesses. Allows for Ts to connect on areas of strength & support.
yes and that is different than the insulated world of ed
Sounds good, do you do it with all staff in the building?
How do you get buy in from teachers that are less excited about personalized PD and see it as one more thing to do?
A2: connect personalized PD to the goal setting process for Ts. Set a goal and then get after it!
love that! Opening doors...let the learning begin!
A2: one way districts to encourage personalized learning for Ts is to ditch old salary scales that simply reward graduate degrees.
We are working in our district to have all teachers with a collaborative, personalized and personal instructional inquiry.
Yes! The PD of now ...acknowledging that the power is in the room and Ts lead their learning! Love it!
Really listen to what others are saying and provide them the info to support what they're asking for ~be "Teacher Centered"
A2: Ts need choice in topics & presentation. PD in 1 room w/ 1 speaker doesn't do it for most Ts. They need playtime just like Ss
Good teachers have to model listening, being responsive to others' needs https://t.co/9VLjNfLtJr
My students know what they need. IMO adults don't listen to kids enough
Actually both, it is a theme I want to establish for the school year
EXACTLY!!!
Thanks !!
https://t.co/mZpUQesIT6
A2: by giving them what they want &. need. Never understood why districts feel all Ts need same thing when we know all Ss are diff
Yes!! https://t.co/9BlaYjnlFZ
A2: by asking lots of questions. What do you want to learn? Why? How? What's your goal? With whom? Towards what end?
Agreed!! Admins need to be empowered and encourage collaboration! https://t.co/lHwOWw6HgU
Admins can personalize by facilitating ongoing PD in their own schools. It doesn't have to be an in-service day to conduct PD!
A2: All learning needs to be informed by something. Schools don't function properly if folks are all over the place.
Perfect! Relevant personally and, likely, for the school. Expertly tailored by on site experts
A2 Also true for univ profs AND univ students. Too many K12 Ss later fall thru cracks after high school.
https://t.co/JXSVbwBKt7
I'd love for teachers to get the same treatment as the kids in terms of differetiation of professional learning w tools and content
A2: Provide a menu of PD options from twitterchats, webinars, edcamps, in-house opps, etc. so Ts know what’s available-give PDPs!
I love that you just did that! I think we need to survey teachers about need and then plan edcamp style PD
A2: Give them choices and a voice in what's being learned and how. Be a model for lifelong learning and growth mindset too.
Looking to collaborate / learn more abt Teacher Genius HR 's
Have you read 's The Answer is in the Room, by chance? ;) https://t.co/HgGEtteD2v
Yes! The PD of now ...acknowledging that the power is in the room and Ts lead their learning! Love it!
A2 survey ts needs/ desires for experiences
A2 My Pln continues to serve as a collaborative tool for personalized learning.
Inquiry cycle: Plan, Act, Assess, Reflect >>> powerful learning for all educators. Job embedded, personal, about student work.
You don't get buy-in, you give them direction. Most won't do it, but you don't make decisions based on them.
Differentiated, competency based PD thru playlists, relevant learning experiences & asynchronous collab https://t.co/Pfn9wVljhS
Admins can personalize by facilitating ongoing PD in their own schools. It doesn't have to be an in-service day to conduct PD!
A2 Most of my learning happens after I take what was presented and apply (and learn more) variety of PD and time to use it
A2 To personalize PD, support T voice/choice and collaborative learning. Model this at FacMtgs.
A2: Good book for this by : It's where the economy's going for kids, but true for adults, too: https://t.co/oG66POf904
FOR SURE! A great way to jump into Monday! https://t.co/7H3QeSQyCu
If you love join tomorrow night at 8pm ET - get elevated and celebrated for sure
Absolutely! Ts should be able to pick and choose their PD because they have such different needs.
A2 Personalized learning begins with empowering learners to become active and engaged in the process.
. we are all learners... doesn't matter the age and therefore we need the same things and considerations when learning
A2 Planning for & providing ample opps for engagement w/content/idea/res is how to personalize lrning T role is to create context.
most definitely & also something that can be easily shared w/Ss & colleagues! https://t.co/JvpD3yJf1d
A1: Most relevant PD = something I can use immediately in my position.
A2 providing opportunities for Ts to have a chance for Pd whether F2F or virtual
A2 How do I personalize learning? I linger in places were teachers chat and I engage with people to find out their needs.
A2 Any learning situation is processed diff by diff people. It's automatically personalized. Some benefit more/less than others.
Q2: Adults are just taller Ss. Getting to know how they roll will personalize their learning.
so many PD opps available these days..PD is not just about sitting in a closed room lisiting to one person talk
a2 let's not over think this ... Learning is deeper when we're invested in it... Choice is huge
on our district we have used it to count towards recertification points. Validates it as "real" PD
A2: I have started using more personalized learning in my 6th grade math class with Prodigy. The gaming has them engaged.
Could the first step of PD be teaching the teachers how to be students?
A2 Admins must know & trust their staff. Without that planning valuable PD is futile
Why wouldn't professional learning by "personal?" Sailing and teaching both passions, right?
A2 Being a Student is not defined by age; personalized Pd needs to apply to the learner; include them in the process
Yes, focus is on student work and student need demonstrated - how can we learn to do our jobs better? https://t.co/f7VkbutTn8
A2 Figure out the school’s goal and your place/role in it. Keeping it student centric what does T need to make it happen?
A2: personalizing learning for adult learners is the same as S, voice and choice, relevance, reflection and lots of conversation
A2 Hi all -jumping in from Toronto Personalized learning involves choice & my responsibility- make it impact student learning
A3: What about, informal, in-person gatherings??? Too much so-called PD reduced to social media platforms. Lets get away from that.
by providing the relevant info "Teacher Centered" turns into "Student Centered" and everyone wins
Personalised PD for teachers? Yes, please! 'cuz us adults need differentiated learning experiences too!
Focus on a needed skill or a problem that is affecting their work. Ask what they need, make it relevant. https://t.co/Mfa8ilSyHd
How do you get buy in from teachers that are less excited about personalized PD and see it as one more thing to do?
Sure it is, taking on a challenge! Good luck!
Me too! Helps me refocus and keep perspective.
Perhaps using Google Classroom to lead PD for your teachers.
https://t.co/VNpwjGFlgy
Differentiated, competency based PD thru playlists, relevant learning experiences & asynchronous collab https://t.co/Pfn9wVljhS
Admins can personalize by facilitating ongoing PD in their own schools. It doesn't have to be an in-service day to conduct PD!
Yes this is spam on but I am participating and I am proud of these students' video essays. 2 examples: https://t.co/Iukmv2ZnMM
YES, my lifelong dream! https://t.co/JY6ZNXwUWS
I'd love for teachers to get the same treatment as the kids in terms of differetiation of professional learning w tools and content
Q3: Probably all of us here know HOW they can use them. The bigger Q is how to entice them to try it.
Make it the norm in the culture of the district. Same way to get buy in from Ss in different areas
And also I think the chance to explore the new. https://t.co/XLJfWNVwbJ
A2: Not all professional growth experiences have to be about filling deficits. We need to encourage growth in strengths as well.
It's critical. Ex: My school data's 3 tiers of #$%$ I can't understand. My company data: an A/B test. Which is real?
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 https://t.co/NkOAHT62Qv
A2: by giving them what they want &. need. Never understood why districts feel all Ts need same thing when we know all Ss are diff
Yes, has some of the most dedicated professionals I know! https://t.co/6ZW62etp3m

Exactly! ...and we are learning from each other :)
Agree! I have always found internal expertise very effective for promoting learning https://t.co/KeEz79a0jM
Agreed!! Admins need to be empowered and encourage collaboration! https://t.co/lHwOWw6HgU
Admins can personalize by facilitating ongoing PD in their own schools. It doesn't have to be an in-service day to conduct PD!
That is AWESOME! How long has that been in place? What kind of process is involved?
TIME! Always the issue, where do we get the time!
Candy is always the answer.
A2 Designing/delivering personalized PD is 50% proactive and 50% reactive
Good morning, ~
Just adding a quick, little "smile" to this Saturday morning. Enjoy & have a beautiful day:
https://t.co/wYtHoTWPQX
I just try to stay positive because I value it, but just looking to see what's worked for others.
Great point Chett! Change the structure - don't expect different results if you do the same thing all the time
A2: too much PD is still 'at' instead of with. Must be more frequent too. Sched changes required!
My is my personalized PD experience
Do U feel in TX w/ T-TESS replacing PDAS this will allow for more autonomous PD & open doors for some who are resistant to change?
Choice for learners at any age is so important. https://t.co/ohLG1oViVU
A2. Encourage voice & choice. Allow Ts to be the professionals that know the content to share.
Most professional learning ISN'T personal, it's driven by administrative mandates. Effective PD _should_ be personal.
DI based on relevancy & need-YES
A3 At least two ways. First way: within a particular social media venue put what you like out there for others to learn about you..
...... Learning for all educators should be centered around continuous improvement and always striving to get better
A3: Unfamiliarity w/soc. media or concern we can't FIND the tools we need quickly tend to be what discourages Ts use before trying.
Great . . & all of us have been Ss throughout our lives...matter of reconnecting to what it feels like.
Yes... I am working on helping them trust amongst one another
https://t.co/I8nFud21kK
A2 encourage adults to observe each other's best practices and to teach/ lead each other.
all Ts are different too! If we all taught the same, then PD could be the same, but each T is unique like our Ss!
A3: This is my favorite Q ever! Group boards on Pinterest, Twitter chats for book studies or slow chats on topics. I could go on...
A3 They are tools like anything else find what serves your needs and implement.
A3 P-T-I presents varied topics that Ts would not know to explore if not introduced. Take one, try it, come back for more
A2 To personalize PD you gotta survey T needs and invite Ts to present and celebrate choice
Love seeing you continue to grow & want to get better Bri!
We have done it for 4 chats now. Ts sign up & after take a survey to think about impact of chat
I have no tech secrets. I keep telling/giving all my tips and tricks away.
The problem is so much of personalized learning takes place outside of school.Others have other commitments No fault
. Being a "Role Model" is an important concept, it supports positive growth mindset
Well there are all the opportunities to exchange ideas with each other
A3. Most of us try, but sifting through the garbage first is a huge task. where do we start?
A3 Second way: browse the collections of others and connect with them as your interests coincide.
Excellent! Just what drives companies like Google IDEO Tesla &makes education at any levelgreat
https://t.co/vtQkE8cMr9
We are working in our district to have all teachers with a collaborative, personalized and personal instructional inquiry.
totally agree, Edcamp style is an awesome format for giving Ts exactly what they need! https://t.co/VkIJjbZHxd
I love that you just did that! I think we need to survey teachers about need and then plan edcamp style PD
A3: Social media offers a lot of curated content from peers. Can be a useful resource for personalized exploration of res & ideas
A2 I am more receptive to lrning if I can connect the concept to a vexing prob. The capture occurs when I connect to the context.
A3 Every Saturday morning we personalize our learning at !
A2- this year I have used Pinterest frequently and have gotten some great ideas and strategies from some great educators.
A2. Learning paths, learning challenges, badges can all work. We need to understand where teachers are and where they want to go.
By taking a lot of the monotony of meetings away to free people up. One way. Also teach efficiency tools.
Based on student learning need. What do we need to learn to be better educators to meet those needs? https://t.co/ac4YxqlX9y
...... Learning for all educators should be centered around continuous improvement and always striving to get better
A3: the use of the hashtag to filter in Twitter makes my searching pinpointed. Ts learn that tool and can find any relevant PD
A3: Provides an easy & inexpensive way to explore, learn & grow. Also can help you find a tribe/PLN who will encourage your growth
A3: If we want Ts to use SM for PD, we must show Ts WHY & HOW it works for them, not you. Ts need to see it as benefit - not add-on
Hmmmm...food for thought! https://t.co/M34VNfqwKf
PS ... What if we took away the compliance and the competition and the constant measurement? Would we be healthier, happier, more learned?
A3 - Give your staff the TIME to use these tools to explore. They will knock it out of the park every time.
A3 I have seen Twitter as a smorgasbord of ideas. Try a bite, dont like it, put it down, love it, then dig in
A2: T created and presented PD makes it personal for the teams involved, gives relevance in the here and now= useful!
Many Ps and Ts have long forgotten how to be engaged learners. Personalized learning would be a paradigm shift.
Recent prof learn designed & implemented with science teacher leaders
A3 simple, just follow the philosophy Just do it! Jump in, follow ts similar interests, don’t be afraid to ask questions
A3 - these platforms allow t’s to receive content that is relevant to them - they have freedom and control to search and discover
A2: schools also need to give Ts time to reflect do we can see what areas we need to strengthen.
Full time worki just to keep up with !!
Don't underestimate your inspiration and influence!
https://t.co/lRkpn5u47d
Love seeing you continue to grow & want to get better Bri!
No doubt! Making PD based on individual Ts learning styles will help districts grow
A2 I facilitate bagels & books, lunch & learns to also accommodate time for Twitter . It's our online literacy lounge.
A3: Model/demonstrate the benefits of these powerful PL tools...but take small steps, be patient with 'newbies'.
A3b: Non-connected Ts miss soc.med. tools that focus in on areas of interest and need due to apprehension or unfamiliarity. TRY!
And, was that relevant? Or, based on experience? https://t.co/R0Zsy1BzXz
Such chaos will breed order anyway. That's basic political theory ... which I learned about in school.
And authentic reflection and self-assessment needs to be the first step!
Part of the drive to become an educator is the joy of learning, sometimes we forget that along the journey
All productive learning is personal: you control the "what." Most "personalized" lrng is only about choosing the "how"
Great to see places validating the learning that happens through Twitter chats! https://t.co/NO0YUJqALs
We have done it for 4 chats now. Ts sign up & after take a survey to think about impact of chat
Morning, colleages! Fred Ende, Asst. Director of Curriculum, metro NYC.
Yes! Allowing CHOICE creates good energy in the classroom or for teachers over the summer. https://t.co/2jfqiTTkrq
Choice for learners at any age is so important. https://t.co/ohLG1oViVU
A2. Encourage voice & choice. Allow Ts to be the professionals that know the content to share.
is now trending in Canada, ranking 2
A3. SM allows for people to share interests. All of these tools can be used for collaboration.
Despite years as a student, it wasn't until I started my EdD that I really reconnected. Changed my teaching
That sounds like a monthly newsletter idea! A2
Not to mention self-promoting.
It's funny to be in different schools & see how admin. can change the entire feel. Didn't notice it until I was a coach.
A3: Besides the endless amount of resources, there are bound to be ppl who have tried it and shared their experiences.
A3: Digtl tools put resources in your hand! Inst, Twtr, & Pntrst are all portals to new ideas. Watch 1st, then share & lead.
A3) Our Hopewell teachers and admin are all joining Twitter. Great way to connect w innovative educators!
Yes sir! Where doi I sign up!
Part of it is by allowing them to drive what they want to learn and based on their personal need
Mike. Drop. https://t.co/jHQZRcmxTN
My kid does the same thing. And I don't know how relevant Egyptian mythology is in the 21st Century.
A3: I've done a presentation on using social media to further teaching. You can pinpoint your own study in each. Quick and useful
Sound like a friendly environment and activity!
Agree-when Ts share, learning is amplified for other Ts & ultimately for Ss https://t.co/iVDpT6lhY3
A2 To personalize PD you gotta survey T needs and invite Ts to present and celebrate choice
A3 - this year Pinterest has been my go to and I have gotten great ideas from some great teachers for my teaching.
A2: Ed camps, conferences, etc
A2 Choice in content and in when PD occurs. Ts lives are different so are the times they are best able to learn. 👍 for learning on📱
A3: we can use all 3 as places to document, showcase and share efforts amongst colleagues. PLNs are the outcome that keeps giving!
A2 what is this? Share Teacher, wanna learn something new! HS Art NJ TL https://t.co/umxjjk784T
A2: I really want to do teacher genius hour/ passion projects!
Yes, it needs to be personalized to fit their needs and support their strengths.
https://t.co/NSYJgQzL3V
A3: If we want Ts to use SM for PD, we must show Ts WHY & HOW it works for them, not you. Ts need to see it as benefit - not add-on
Twitter , reading blogs is so critical part of my learning & growth. Thank all my colleagues
The hard truth: My most relevant learning experiences have been those that challenged me most - discrepant events, difficult spaces
Personal - how you process what your learning/doing; personalized - choice, designed for individuals' needs https://t.co/JnSZq045v1
So can we distinguish between personalized and personal learning?
Our responsibility goes even deeper - what are we offering and encouraging and scaffolding so this can happen?
A3 - Model all day. Have early adopters and leadership share and collaborate with others. This modeling will provide reference
And ability! Filters cause hurdles and frustration. Build trust within your tribe. https://t.co/WiLGqWyNSs
A3 - Give your staff the TIME to use these tools to explore. They will knock it out of the park every time.
Twitter gives me useful ideas quick, Pinterest has a lot of excess, haven't used Instagram for ideas.
How can we find the "right" hashtags?
So true! https://t.co/4W6Q96kWfm
A3. Most of us try, but sifting through the garbage first is a huge task. where do we start?
A3) I love the idea of using Pinterest to share resources of interest. We use email now. Pinterest would be a nice repository!
Absolutely. But much professional development ISN'T productive learning. That's why teachers complain about it!
This is a great idea! https://t.co/u8e34b52lb
A3: I've done a presentation on using social media to further teaching. You can pinpoint your own study in each. Quick and useful
Sketchnotes are AMAZING! We've seen great success from Ss using them as review tools.
A3. The best part about all of these tools is they allow anyone to tell their own story, whether it be via pics, text, etc.
be the monthly PD messenger💪🏼
All the platforms can be used to gather ideas and develop lessons. Use them to create and demonstrate Ts learning and growth
A3. Twitter, Pinterest & quality blogs are the gateways to a great PLN: on-demand, always on, indexed and collaborative learning.
A3: Here's something I learned on Twitter, about a massive shift in usage of K-12 materials!
https://t.co/IUEclbKIAm
SEISMIC shift in K-12 materials market: T's move towards self-curated & self-developed, away from packaged material
https://t.co/E8ploOEEd4
Good morning Tim from Omaha jumping in late
Totally agree !! I am very deliberate in picking student driven amd centered PD https://t.co/3O2cjrFzS5
Based on student learning need. What do we need to learn to be better educators to meet those needs? https://t.co/ac4YxqlX9y
...... Learning for all educators should be centered around continuous improvement and always striving to get better
yes! Sometimes the application curve is steep. Ts get on, but then get overwhelmed.
A3 PD in your PJ's, follow different groups and learn/grow from them, ask Q's, participate in chats.
Funny, I just think many long meetings are just long meetings because we feel like we have to have them.
A3: First people have to get connected to these tools. Some Ts are not and don't see the value. Need buy in
. Spam 101; hit with irrelevant book pump, then exit. "Dr," u posted this identical spam 11 hrs ago.
A2 PD needs to include PLCs & PLNs to Connected Learning Communities as shown in publication https://t.co/k29PTDyCfM
Oh, yeah, rght. That. https://t.co/TNDrg3eIOe
It was relevant in that I needed the course to complete a political science major?
I've yet to find a "reflection and self-assessment" mode that doesn't feel like busy work :-)
I agree. Our expectations must be realistic as well. Build upon it & set goals in the mind of baby steps
A2: competency based salary for Ts make more sense and encourage pursuit relevant knowledge and skills. https://t.co/fQjm5KkTuB
Jumping in! Heather Abney, HS principal in VA @
. Role models should be from the "Top Down" this is how positive growth continues for everyone
Love the idea of an online literacy lounge!
Pinterest: It's not just for redoing your bathroom anymore, lol.
A3 The best PD is when I work in the classroom alongside the teacher. Just in time. It means the teacher can relax about the tech.
usually search hashtag list that posts first then try any form of the hashtag in the topic I want.
A3) While all SM provide opportunities to advance learning, and PD, Ts need intrinsic motivation to do so and to discover benefit
I try to do this for our association's newsletter but you gave me some more ideas.
A3: share what you have gained & show how you have used what you learned. Holds us accountable for our choice and excited to share.
A3: A key part to is put your resources in 1 place so Ts can access when they're READY. Not when you presented.
A3: To celebrate and change the 'feel' of school culture, particularly for larger schools (see for a good ex)
yes -- because we sit around and "admire the problem" (stole that expression from )
Also "Appy Hours" create an opportunity to explore tools and find the "wows".
A3 My colleague & friend encouraged me to get involved w/ and now and I am so grateful. SM has me fired up!
Digital platforms remove barriers so that edus can engage in virtual communities of practice & learn through social interactions
How many times have we wlaked out of a meeting say "what just happened" while it shuld be "Wow, that was powerful"
A3: Twitter and Pinterest make collaboration possible outside of agendas and minutes, and can often be more engaging and organic
Thanks so much, everyone! Great topic Gotta run to
I've become addicted to reading blogs. They're a wealth of information
Yes. Our team will be having a book study using voxer this summer.
A3 At the moment, I'm heavy into the Faberge Organic Shampoo method of introducing folks to personalized PD https://t.co/XuSwGLzNn4
Hoping folks are thinking about student learning they way they think about their own. Passion. Choice. Public.
Bloglovin has helped me stay on top of my favorite blogs too. I can't keep track of email notifications.
A3: There are so many great ideas and resources available. Not limited to your own brain power or what's in your backyard.
A3. is an idea station. is for everything PD. is for sharing pics & evidence of learning experience.
this is awesome! I have learned so much from chats! Worth recognizing
True. But, there are people on here who probably don't know what you're talking about. https://t.co/zsV4fQwfSI
Although I will say that Machiavelli will always be relevant.
A3. Because the thing is, we need to be able to reflect to really learn, and we can't do that unless we tell our stories. #
A2- ask learners what they need don't assume- allow time to investigate own challenges, take risks, collaborate, reflect, & share
A3 When you model the PD/Twitter experience for Ts -- and provide them opportunities to use it, the seed of change is planted.
I agree with Pinterest - sharing via email gets so unorganized. Pinterest is easier to go back and search
A3 great source of wonderful and time tested ideas which could be adapted in our classes
A3) I've considered using collaboration tools like slack. Just curious if anyone has tried it in an academic setting.
or say "glad I don't have to solve that issue" ;-)
And emphasize that if they're trying these techniques to invite other Ts to see how it works. Valuable & safe feedback.
Problem is most of this stuff's blocked in schools. Kids have VPNs but teachers have school networks.
Yes! The mindset of growth is how you approach every opportunity https://t.co/LmyDkV5pbu
All productive learning is personal: you control the "what." Most "personalized" lrng is only about choosing the "how"
Or just gargle it in our mouth, just to be spit out anyways! haha
Compensation comment gets an immediate follow.
means compensation for the real value that each offers...
A3: We have almost every teacher, secretary, custodian, lunch aide on Twitter. Helps us stay connected!
What licensed apps/services would you recc for ? For creation, presentation, collab--both Ss & Ts?
A3: Ts & Twitter-Everyone has the personalized PD wanted, at their fingertips, sharing practices, research, ideas, very compelling
A3: The ability to pick and choose the best hashtags, boards and resources to meet your needs/ department needs/ school needs
Enjoy your weekend! I have to leave our chat early this morning!
I have found communities outside the edu profession whom I learn from daily via Twitter. business/commerce, HR related
A3 Social Media like Twitter allows one to pick & follow the PD topics which interest them, provides positive growth
Have you ever had Ps lead PD? I do 4 us. Helps build relationships & open eyes of Ts that Ps are resources.
A4. Contrast is that often traditional isn't relevant. Often personalized learning is applicable & engaging.
Look at Summit Pub Schools in CA. Their personalized learning program for Ss could apply to Ts nationwide! https://t.co/dLU2xQJCTT
Agree. https://t.co/bMAY2EBTHc
A2- ask learners what they need don't assume- allow time to investigate own challenges, take risks, collaborate, reflect, & share
Time is a tremendous gift for educators.
A3 tell ts it's okay just to lurk for a while. See how others are are using. These tools, especially twitter go fast!
only on Twitter 3 weeks now and still sifting... It's a job to be on and wonder when it will just be apart of what I do...
Glad you can make it Fred!
A1/A2: a well done survey of students can inform the course of a school's PD. Teacher choice is good; student input is even better.
A3 SM posts never change what I think, but they do encourage & spur new ideas that I fit for my student population
We need on this . Seriously.
Choice leads to increased Voice. A2
That's what I like about the Individualized Learning Plans for Ts. Allow them to set short & long term goals.
SM can help accelerate learning because it allows us to establish relationships & connections, which are the impetus for learning!
US educators are more open to genuine discourse than some in UK. https://t.co/cxHKjW1bCX
US and Aussie teachers are more open to discourse than some ("the Twob") educators in the UK https://t.co/Y0sq2r6iiO
Issues of child protection and safety should outweigh maintaining ones position as the wise sage of the twittersphere!
A3: give them time! Does your schedule allow for collaboration & growth?! The schedule does. Ask me how!
Q3:Social Media provide many opportunities for new ideas, differentiation, & learning from others globally. Unlimited PLNs
A3: Also, a great way to share Ss learning and success. Incorporate that SAMR model.
True. How do you sell the benefits so that Ts don't see it as just another task to complete & login to remember?
A3: organize thoughts, ideas; create a personal network to go to for ideas; extend thinking outside the box
A3-my own personal practice has grown since using Twitter as part of my PLN, global connections puts everything into perspective
A4: Traditional professional learning= mandated by employer. Personalized = by choice/need determined by own professional lens.
Some of my most valuable PD has been with my students as we work through challenges together. & then reflection builds the values
A3: and only looking at your school/district limits resources. Ts want what is best for Ss and will share ideas locally & globally!
A2: I have found communities outside the edu profession whom I learn from daily via Twitter. business/commerce, HR related
A3 . Social media tools R new ways 2research, communicate & learn. Evidence of impact is personal. We also need professional impact.
Yes! Agree, the attaching and emailing is a mess. Having a central board to return to is easier
A3 I use twitter as a space to reflect on my practice eg. double-loop lrning. We fail 2 incld it as Ts which makes for incompl inst
A4. Due to the personalized learning being applicable, the learning sticks, it is useful! There is meaningful growth.
A3: Find/create groups with similar interests and build PLNs
A4: Traditional = you tell me I need to learn it. Personalized = I find out I needed to learn it myself. Which sticks better?
A4. Adult learning that is personalized is about the person. More traditional adult learning tends to be about product/process.
Oooh I have borrowed soooo many thinhs from Pinterest. It has made me a more engaging prof for sure!! R&D=research and duplicate :)
A4 Trad: 1 presenter all get same PD; PL many presenters in diff media and forms, choose/learn/share Ss <=> Ts
I encourage teachers to go for it - aim high and then I work alongside them to make it happen. An example https://t.co/9MydGA3Yta
A4. The contrast between traditional & personalized adult learning is me! .
A3 So agree. Recently had live tweet where I helped new Tweeters participate in chats . Learning 2gether https://t.co/K7JTMw0rIU
A4: Traditional is about the content only, personalized is about the learners needs and motivations.
So true. One afternoon a month isn't helpful.
Model your expectations.
https://t.co/2FuHQBVllS
A3 - Model all day. Have early adopters and leadership share and collaborate with others. This modeling will provide reference
A4 I'm feeling a little frustrated that the Qs are ones we know the answers to. I'm ready for the "what's next" and "how to" stuff.
A3 Schools/districts can do local Twitter chats.Great tool for sharing best practices Instagram pics of your assessment/class setup
A4: PD in PJs - doesn't get better than that. It suits my busy schedule as a mom.
A4: Schools need to credential work Ts outside or PD for teaching. Ex: I write professionally but can't TEACH it w/o Eng degree
In UK there is a self appointed elite who try to control academic discourse. They are know as the Twob.
They probably need a list of hashtags to begin the exploration.
right - so if it's blocked that's another issue. Our district has to value social media as learning tool
exactly! If we talk on the benefits of shouldn't we also be talking on ?
A4: Choice, variety, and differentiation are 3 differences b/w trad and personalized adult learning
A4: Sit & get (traditional), choice, collaboration, voice, feedback, reflection (personalized)
Traditional PD= someone gives me what they think I need to learn; Personalized PD= I figure out what I need & go learn about it!
hoping to start this for our district as PD planning talks are in progress! There's so much to take advantage of
A3 Twitter can be divided among Ts;diff ppl go to diff chats;share what was learned from their PLN; More chats=more ideas/resources
Q3 . Need a boost any time of day, cleack on one of s All the ed chats inspire and support encourage
A4. I'm a firm believer in the Law of 3Ps:
Person before process, provess before product.
So. . . :)
A4: Square peg+round hole=traditional. As a band T, I've been that square peg plenty of times. Always grateful when options offered
A4 I find that Traditional does not differentiate where Personalized allows for more autonomy and choice.
A2: Admin support is definitely reinforcing, when a principal tweets, Ts have a relevant model
A3. We will be using Twitter this summer for a staff book chat. T's will earn PD hours.
A4 Personalized learning offers reflection & opportunities for growth. Tailored, selected by you, the learner. Choose your path.
that's it right there!! https://t.co/VWjBr4gdip
Traditional PD= someone gives me what they think I need to learn; Personalized PD= I figure out what I need & go learn about it!
Easy.. Who wants to sit and get?! No thank you. 👎🏼 Lets learn & plan how it can implemented! https://t.co/E4esVOF0HJ
A4: Why set up that dichotomy straw horse, anyway? As if to say traditional is the Devil. Let's not do that.
A4) Traditional = sit & get; we tell you what you need; one shot...Personalized = I have voice & choice; I learn when I want
I agree, this is the only way I think to create change in this particular area. Mandated PD this way will not work.
You can use a 'Tweet of the week' in your Friday Focus to show staff the powerful learning available with Twitter.
A4. I'm a firm believer in the Law of 3Ps:
Person before process, process before product.
So, an important difference.
A3 SM PD is relevant, real-world, quick and instant learning with a visual bent.
Very excited is starting this for Ss next year. Signed my stb 7th gr up.
Sometimes all it takes for buy in is to use in real time & demonstrate the ease/value of the new tool https://t.co/u3nkfGMi97
A3: First people have to get connected to these tools. Some Ts are not and don't see the value. Need buy in
A4 to me, no such thing as traditional, if we stick to traditions we fall behind. PL should involve choice and personal decisions.
A4: Traditional PD=top down. Personalized adult learning is chosen by the adult to meet their needs.
If S learning is personalized so must T learning be relevant and meaningful
Guide rather than command...
https://t.co/0O0cuxK99Q
I agree, this is the only way I think to create change in this particular area. Mandated PD this way will not work.
is my doctors office, game field reading!
A3 Share literacy snapshots via SM or during live, collaborative convos m, celebrates authentic work in action:Adopt/Adapt/Reflect
I totally agree Starr. Professional learning should be individualised & differentiated, not one size fits all.
yes- agreed- students benefit tremendously from these same opportunities. We should be encouraging them.
This year, instead of presenting long-winded mile-high teacher portfolios, my teachers tried PechaKuchas https://t.co/72HmuKcghN
And you are a supermodel planting a whole garden! https://t.co/F9vNdrXyEA
A3 When you model the PD/Twitter experience for Ts -- and provide them opportunities to use it, the seed of change is planted.
I like how this is stated. RT
https://t.co/rbs6k0S3cl
A4) Traditional = sit & get; we tell you what you need; one shot...Personalized = I have voice & choice; I learn when I want
Working alongside the kids was my very first "A1" response. :-) https://t.co/7erM4Aor8s
Some of my most valuable PD has been with my students as we work through challenges together. & then reflection builds the values
A4: traditional=management today's PD needs to = inspiration
yes! It will be much easier to model in our classrooms if we regularly model it in our own lives.
Sometimes you need to BE the when leading and pushing people out of their own comfort zones!
A4: Personalized to me is using tools available to get out of the learning what I need to be successful.
That starts with what you believe about how people learn best. Is teacher learning different from student learning?
A4: They go hand in hand-personalized with voice and choice, traditional in the learners' style/approach to it
A4: Traditional PD - someone tells me what to do. Personalized PD - someone asks me what would benefit my teaching and STUDENTS <--
1/ Pinterest, YouTube... nearly as big search engines for content/learning as Google. 60% of content's video.
Yes :) we regularly facilitate peer observation. Led by Ts for Ts .
A3: we try to pull all of our resources together on a for future ref on devices. Very handy.
Summary of adult learning https://t.co/Wvd0s0aKkr
Traditional PD= someone gives me what they think I need to learn; Personalized PD= I figure out what I need & go learn about it!
A4: Trad. may be books only. Personalized has multiple mediums. I do worry about the squirrel effect though in personalized PD.
A4 The biggest change from when I 1st began teaching is that PD used to be ALL developed top down.
Never use faculty meeting time for anything that could be put in writing. The time is too precious to waste on logistics.
Awesome. We've done this a couple of times it gives a sense of flexibility to learning. https://t.co/rZQgMT4xLD
A3. We will be using Twitter this summer for a staff book chat. T's will earn PD hours.
A3: can create shared database of best practices with explanations of use and targets addressed
A4) Traditional is administrative driven while Personalized is teacher driven
A4 Will go out on limb here: both trad&personalized learning great...when combined.
Strong base + flexibility ... like an oak tree.
2/ Pinterest and YouTube are my personal go-to for instruction/learning for me. Kids: already there.
A4 I understand content/discrete knowledge vs deep-connected schema building. Schema building incorporates self concept & emotion.
Outstanding idea !!
Simple.
Profound.
Doable.
https://t.co/oRRsibEP1V
You can use a 'Tweet of the week' in your Friday Focus to show staff the powerful learning available with Twitter.
A4: Traditional-sit and listen to what was provided; Personal-given choices
A4: what's best for some is not what's best for all...someone will get something from traditional...all get something individual.
is there any such thing as a traditional learner anymore? Should there be?
A3: Collaborating on social media multiplies our resources, including the resource of time!
What she said👍🏻 https://t.co/EG022OnY0y
A4 Trad: 1 presenter all get same PD; PL many presenters in diff media and forms, choose/learn/share Ss <=> Ts
A4 Traditional is a one size fits all approach, Personalized gives the opportunity to create your own!
In the past we've done the collaboration - group work at tables etc... but CHOICE is the key https://t.co/8suB3VRVRv
A4:What if I needed some1 2 show me a new topic to learn? In that regard, traditional might be needed. Personalized is how I use it?
A4: Ts=learners-can find relevant info in any PD; Personalized often more focused & meaningful/useful
All teachers want choice and voice. Their internal motivation may just be higher.
A4) The ability of choice and learning on your own time. Things that we seldom allow students.
Too often, we don't create the same conditions for kids to learn as we ourselves use to learn. Why?
A4 Methinks that so long the org's mission is widely understood and people have the freedom to choose how to support it, nothing..
A4: the difference between traditional and personalized PD is teacher choice, recognizing different expertise & passion
A4 Depends on what "traditional" means. Stodgy, hierarchical, unchanging? Tried and true?
I love that u included .I love to make connections professionally & also with my Ss! https://t.co/Z4jim4yoo7
A3: and only looking at your school/district limits resources. Ts want what is best for Ss and will share ideas locally & globally!
Join me for some personalized learning on Thursday at 8pm EST as I moderate on summer reading! https://t.co/uhqGARm4Br
Love this idea! A great way to show the power of tweeting! https://t.co/3aiBUyi2gS
You can use a 'Tweet of the week' in your Friday Focus to show staff the powerful learning available with Twitter.
and the ideas are rolling! https://t.co/InrKZI6NQb
You can use a 'Tweet of the week' in your Friday Focus to show staff the powerful learning available with Twitter.
experimental exploration is great but for beginners there are countless resources like 140 Twitter tips!
A4: we can grow anywhere, anytime now - you can't do that with philosophy "one size fits all" traditional PD
A4 traditional learning may provide a limited perception of the skills one needs to succeed in a global society
they also create a culture of growth. We need Ts to be encouraged to learn and grow, not forced to!
A4: I think what's most impt is the impact of this learning. How is that measured? Am I pushed to do diff? If not, thats a problem
for PD to be truly effective it must meet people at the interest & needs level.
Wow... and the world didn't fall apart, lol. . Trust is a really big part of moving forward.
A4- traditional pd= attend, implement someone else's ideas, personal learning= driven by a need or interest to improve
A3: Follow people and hashtags relevant to their topics of interest. Share that info in self-selected PLCs.
I love the authentic discourse & sharing of US and Aussie educators. Tweeps are willing to share and support colleagues on Twitter.
Paper53 is amazing and free. They sell a pencil/stylus that's great, but not necessary.
A4: Traditional: lecture style and causes very little or no impact to my teaching practices. No time given to tinker and reflect
All students want choice and voice too. Do we give it to them?
This is fantastic: person > process > product/platform. Can I use this?
A3 as I make the transition from KS urban elem sped to MN rural HS life skills all of these sources will help with new ideas.
Brother, I expect more from a man of your intellect than the questions you're posing this morning.
Need to have Ts lead initiative, share benefits, invite others, perhaps even conduct a twitter chat during staff mtg
How we find out, I think, is the sticky point with personalized learning in general. There is not way to "record keep it".
A4: traditional PD means to me "mage on the stage" personalized is "guide by the side".
A4: Choice and trust. The reality-sometimes I know exactly what I need and sometimes I don't!
I love doing that & seeing the lightbulb go off!
I think it's partly because we have a hard time situating power in the hands of students when it comes to learning.
A4. Sitting and learning vs choosing, learning, and doing. We had a PD session where T's chose the sessions that were led by T's.
A3 Tech allows me to collaborate and learn from amazing educators regardless of geography.
Couldn't have said it better. https://t.co/0SL6ohm2CI
Traditional PD= someone gives me what they think I need to learn; Personalized PD= I figure out what I need & go learn about it!
Most important thing about professional development is that it needs to be really good. Quality is much more essential than format.
A4 The tradition of progressive education is a century old, yet usually opposed to "traditional" education.
The "trust" piece is HUGE. https://t.co/K3nXhle6qg
A4: Choice and trust. The reality-sometimes I know exactly what I need and sometimes I don't!
Admin is right where many Ts are...Not knowing where the learning will go if Ts choose their learning. Will it align to the vision?
A4 Every student/person needs a strong foundation plus the flexibility for indiv needs/strengths/interests in order to grow&thrive.
A4 It's the learning experience we associate with one or other that gets us in trouble. If butts:brains go numb try something else
And we all know that this is not how ANY learning happens. So why were we all put through it?
https://t.co/VoRYUqT7Ik
A4 The biggest change from when I 1st began teaching is that PD used to be ALL developed top down.
A4: In my experience Traditional PD looks a lot like my 3rd grade classroom in 1978, instructor lead, not interactive, not flexible
If we are personalizing, we must consider the way Ts & Ss learn, some are more explorative and some trad. All considered
Ha! I've been on since 7:45AM EST, and I am STILL trying to figure out what this chat is about. https://t.co/F1qVt00apg
Thank you, I am honored by the mention. I am trying to figure out the topic of the chat.
is now trending WorldWide, ranking 24 [14:06]
Any good book suggestions for summer professional reading?
this could begin as traditional PD, then break out to target T personal needs in implementing said strategy
A4. And the best part about the rule of 3Ps? It keeps us focused on the , and with any , that's the key.
Q3: Just like you match Ss with Reading Buddies, match nervous tech immigrants with Tech Buddies
A4 Traditional PD is spending 2 hours in your seat and not being able to make one single personal connection.
Role at the top shifts to facilitator, quality control as opposed to provider. should match shift toward S centered in classroom
Deep contrast betw traditional one shot PD vs Personalized PD with choice & relevancy. A4
Yes! We expect our Ts to do that with Ss, but don't offer them the same thing to grow
slowly but surely. I started this fall & it took me a bit to figure out what chats I love, people to follow.
We have talked about doing this too, but haven't yet... Good luck!
A4: traditional = sitting same direct all receiving same thing. Personalized = pods, support groups working together to advance
If we are truly personalizing their learning, every student has a choice and every student has a voice.
The minimum goal of every meeting is teachers need to be more excited about teaching tomorrow than they were today.
Good luck. Keep me posted
A4 Sage-on-the-stage (or anywhere else but facilitating) traditional/facilitated makes for tough (passive/boring?) going..
agreed. Because I think there are times that traditional learning is still needed. I do not know what I do not know.
I agree! Buy in can be easy or hard, but worth it. I know Ts totally against any social media. That's a barrier
education is truly global. So much easier to connect with Ts & Ss all over. Utilize this world we live!
If we believe that to be important for student learning, we need to find ways, right? Beliefs should guide practice.
A4 tradition vs personalized PD; no longer sit & get;its experiential;similar to how we are to teach Ss;learning relevant/engaging
Unfortunately, in schools, often, initiatives drive PD; not individuals. That is problematic because it's impedes sustainability!
So true teachers need to want PD and see the benefits over time. Culture shift https://t.co/U2uaxditTZ
So true. One afternoon a month isn't helpful.
Model your expectations.
https://t.co/2FuHQBVllS
A3 - Model all day. Have early adopters and leadership share and collaborate with others. This modeling will provide reference
Admin PD could be personalized if they are willing to innovate. Have hard time letting go of control.
Self-Direction For The Win!
https://t.co/aBF9rCDh8Y
A4- traditional pd= attend, implement someone else's ideas, personal learning= driven by a need or interest to improve
- Cool resource. Thanks for sharing. Educational larceny.
I am with ya!! In PJs with toddler watching bo on the go right now haha
A4: Traditional format: someone leading a group and set topic. Personalized format: collaborative groups, topics based on needs
A4 personalized learning allows one to grow with the times
A4 Contrast is who the PD has to satisfy. Trad is to satisfy bosses. Pers is to satisfy me.
Before Happiness & Happiness Advantage
It also goes back to the type of learner you are! We know several book learners (myself included)! 📕📗📘📙
A4 Make the (PD) learning visible & do something to manipulate & share.
you think that has anything to do with interest in the topic?
Agreed! https://t.co/zkgREJZIGA
they also create a culture of growth. We need Ts to be encouraged to learn and grow, not forced to!
Agreed. Direct Instruct is not dead, just needs to rest (A LOT). Personalize by giving Ts time to implement
Well said. You sound as if you have some knowledge about this :)
Yes!! This is why I need to read Ten Minute Inservice! Ts being excited about teaching after a meeting! https://t.co/GGFy0vqbtp
The minimum goal of every meeting is teachers need to be more excited about teaching tomorrow than they were today.
100% agree! I think we need to start making learning (& schools) more about students than adults.
Love all the ...Like a Pirate books. I have quite the list started on my Goodreads app.
You're expecting too much, I am afraid.
Have to go so here's A6: are my Rockstar go-to peeps
dipping in for a few minutes this am. Susie from NYC
I like it! https://t.co/nwO4GrnKZq
You can use a 'Tweet of the week' in your Friday Focus to show staff the powerful learning available with Twitter.
What a great resource! Thanks for sharing.
I find that only 10% of any of my audiences for PD are connected on Twitter. Unaware of the relevancy. A3
Wondered this myself. Why are Ts expected to be talked at instead of jumping in &collaborating &learning?
A4: personalizing allows me to use unconventional sources like a local wellness/ meditation group or attending someone else's class
A4) No choice w/traditional, when context & choice is apparent, L gains autonomy, accelerates growth & navigates their learning
a4 sometimes tech goes down in my class and I go to pencil & paper but I don't think it's traditional, just different tools
yes, and the same is true for Ss. I think blended learning can be applied to a broader conversation here
A4: Personalized: allows me to tinker, reflect & figure out what will work best for my Ss. Growth occurs & actions change for me
The goal-meet the Ts needs, via whatever means lights their passion for teaching and learning, Ts need to be met where they are
A4 The best example of student personalized learning is being dev this year at my school with Kath Murdoch and it's called iTime.
My girls have emerged from their slumber cocoons. Time to start my favorite job as Dad. Have a great morning
Word! https://t.co/XNR3ZXdmEK
Never use faculty meeting time for anything that could be put in writing. The time is too precious to waste on logistics.
Love this https://t.co/klBswVNRzT
A4: Traditional PD - someone tells me what to do. Personalized PD - someone asks me what would benefit my teaching and STUDENTS <--
Exactly! So we have to start there -- getting folks connected
yes.I still feel I need to give direct instruction daily, but the time I use for it has shrunk considerably.
get excited by connecting with Ss and wanting to know how their game last night was, how their practice went!
Also, I have so many mixed feelings I can hardly sort them out.
A4 Traditional PD = you are the target. Personal PD = you are the archer.
Gotta do it first to see if it aligns, then mold it if it goes away from vision. Must take a chance & start somewhere
With respect, that's not how ed tech marketers would describe "personalized learning."
I think vision and problem of practice should drive PD. Then you see how to engage the individuals.
A2 why can't neighboring school districts do PD together to provide more choices and opportunities?
If we want PD to be sustainable, it must also resonate on a personal level.
The lecture (thankfully) is a dying art!
We have power to personalize lrng within the topic, let the child find relevance in theapproach
if we all get it, how come it doesn't happen? https://t.co/uqgXA5ZJbr
I totally agree Starr. Professional learning should be individualised & differentiated, not one size fits all.
Agree -- but challenge to pull off -- many don't
Students should inform the course of a school's PD. Teacher choice is good; student input is even better. https://t.co/lrNU5mL9WL
A4 Passions & purpose are part of the process of personalized PD. It's also about spreading
A5: Bring some kind of platter to show choice..or maybe something served on board like cheese
I love your distinction between personalized and traditional PD
I feel that society has created a culture of fear around using social media by exploiting examples of Ts using it inappropriately
My PhD was probably my biggest ever personalised PD. Self-driven, passion-based, hard but transformative.
A5. I'm cool with a nice spinach dip and some dipping bread
A4: Common strategies are also important.. Personalization can be where is a Ts entry point on schoolwide programs/initiatives.
High leverage prof learning is deep dive with many opps to practice , ongoing
It is easier to plan and execute a lecture. That's all I got :)
A2 You can do it, find a group of Ts & start it https://t.co/lIbpq48neG
A2) Edcamps, collaborative PD planning, genius hour approach for PD would be amazing--would love my admin to do this
it should shrink, be done in innovative ways, but not abandoned!
right! Don't forget that at one point in time, a pencil and paper were both technological advances.
Huge! Isn't it time for some truly honest dialogue?
Schools are teaching cultures, not learning cultures. Big difference. Teachers need to be learners first.
School cultures have to be based on trust so collaboration is the foundation. A3
A4 sometimes I need info - traditional approach. Personalized learning is contextual, relevant and needs 2be applied & practiced.
that's a great idea Doug! Problems of practice can be a hotbed for PD!
this was a great post Peter!!
A4) Traditional learning is an assembly line. Personal includes pedagogies like JIT, TBL, flipped classroom, etc. Have it Your Way.
Imagine if we could focus on what's at the core of initiatives & get better at improving our practices, not programs
A4. Like anything else, is about variety. The form PD takes is key. Sometimes it is just as much about need as want.
I think a lot of what's going on is radically different assumptions and definitions co-existing without examination.
A4 Traditional is all driven by topics relevant to initiatives and Personalized is driven by participating individuals
Traditional learning makes the student adjust to the teacher. Personalized learning is the opposite. Both are beneficial.
We should ask the students & families what they would like their teachers to learn & share
I also appreciate that personalized PD allows me to prioritize my time and gives me time to sip coffee and read current research
...and that's OK. Sometimes we don't realize that the answer is around the corner we are afraid to look around.
BOOM! That's it... https://t.co/SWaKJhpbPd
Schools are teaching cultures, not learning cultures. Big difference. Teachers need to be learners first.
older ways of teaching=T is controller of knowledge & the room; new way= teacher is the guide to knowledge
A5. As a school leader, the most important thing I can bring is myself. We need to show teachers we care and are invested!
Blogging is also ongoing learning for me. Writing ideas into being, rolling them around, sharing them partly formed.
A4 Traditional PD supports the status quo, Personalized encourages growth and ultimately innovation
A5: On July 14 I'll be serving up Bacardi Black Razz w/ Strawberry Lemonade at my
Thank goodness I'm a teacher, not a marketer
This is my personal highlight of today's so far. https://t.co/FNXbDvfMJ0
A5. I'm cool with a nice spinach dip and some dipping bread
A5) I have only dipped a toe into Pinterest. Should I be using it more as a lead learner?
what if the topic is irrelevant?
A5. Coffee is always an educators friend, ice it up for the summer? ☕️☕️☕️☕️
A5 Cool-Aid of course ;-)
A4: Traditional works for the presenter, Personalized works for the group.
that's a reality too- the variables that impact schools aren't always about the people or beliefs!
And, I would say (in my personal opinion), that PD isn't really such, unless action is taken. Learning requires a next step.
Especially Can be agreed upon with staff then you are moving in same direction. not squirrels running around for nuts
PD administrators need to count Twitter chats for Ts as hours in learning. Design a system to count PLN time for hours
The EdCamp model is personalized PD at its finest.
An essential ingredient: a culture that allows folks to talk safely & openly about areas for development. https://t.co/NuVy9G3lRZ
IMO,personalized learning takes time to show its true effects. What do educators have the least of? Time.Battle worth trying to win.
A4 Traditional models push what we "HAVE to do". Personalization draws on what we "GET to do."
A5: Some water with mint leaves to keep us hydrated as we lose track of time on with each other!
I totally consider this a formal invitation.
A4: Ts that create PD for their colleagues, get it, because they know what they need and want
A6: I would bring the sugar!
Is saying there's no benefit to schoolwide training on Learning Targets, Formative Assessment, or other best practices?
because the scattergun same-for-all approach is easier to implement & track. Easier not better.
which begs us to ask: why is it sometimes so difficult for stakeholders to feel that trust in schools?
is now trending WorldWide, ranking 24 [14:06]
A4: PL doesn’t always mean learn whatever you want. It can mean learn in a growth area in a way that makes sense for you.
What if the child chose the topic? You can't make kids learn what they don't want to learn.
A4: Traditional is about completion and Individual is about Exploration& Inquiry- do you want them to Finish or Learn?
A3 A sampler of desserts. Let everyone pick what they want and in bite size so they are not overwhelmed
A4 We rarely meet as a whole faculty at my school. We meet a LOT in PLCs. That is where the action is!
Yes! We are planning something similar in the fall. Have to move away from "sit and git". https://t.co/rp6nk782kT
A4. Sitting and learning vs choosing, learning, and doing. We had a PD session where T's chose the sessions that were led by T's.
That's why PD isn't just talking. Must do something with newly gained info/skills/ideas.
It is we want for our students & for all learners, learning as lifework.
glad I could bring you that joy. Maybe some sun dried tomatoes too
It's tough to determine: Is it the Ts need to give it, or the Ss need to be instructed that way?
yes. As a math teacher, I need to show them what we are doing. Then, give time for them to practice/learn.
Good morning, ! Rachel, T and Tech Integrator from NY.
Joining from today!
But far less meaningful and worthwhile to attendees.
I am feeling this so hard as I work on my EdD. Hard but worth it (hopefully!) https://t.co/qJyynLpCKb
My PhD was probably my biggest ever personalised PD. Self-driven, passion-based, hard but transformative.

Personalized learning distributes leadership and provides opportunities for growth for all.
. Easy to say beliefs should guide practice...which they should. Reality is not that simple.
. I use Pinterest personally, but hadn't considered collab. I'm taking this new idea away from . Cool!
Q4: You don't want Ts sitting in PD watching the clock. Somedays my learning comes reading Twitter while blow drying my hair.
A5 Water & [beef] jerky. We're gonna be moving around and sweating like nobody's business
Also easy to collect observations and data when you have clearly defined goals or problems.
A5: fresh flavors for a fresh start
Many Ts are just so busy with current demand and family that adding "new" endeavors is overwhelming for them
Would love to hear more about this.
https://t.co/1Ep5O0nlds
A4 The best example of student personalized learning is being dev this year at my school with Kath Murdoch and it's called iTime.
A4: I don't believe personalized PD means teachers always get to pick their area of professional learning. Should be a blend.
I know, right? My favorite learning this month!
for me, it would mean a hard look at the schedule. Can be done, just need to work at it.
Tchr last week "This has been the most exciting meeting I have attended in 2 years." I guess that was a big deal!
Well, I would have quite unpopular views (judging by many tweets on ). Let's see...
A4: Traditional: the way it always has been. Personalized driven by needs of Ts & Ss. Perhaps even done through or
Anyone in land have some tips for 1st planners? Mine is Aug 27th. Still looking for partners. Ideas?
A5: I don't want to give away non-educational preferences since I only use Twitter for prof. uses. I love the idea! Let's plan it!
A5: my famous Rice Krispie treats! They're delicious!
I would LOVE to have Personalized PD and collaborate with awesome educators from across the state. Just sayin...
yes, deeply uncomfortable & very difficult, but amazingly rewarding! Best kind of learning.
This is it, right here. Personalized PD can't be just about the "want." https://t.co/nqkMsv45FE
A4: I don't believe personalized PD means teachers always get to pick their area of professional learning. Should be a blend.
A5 Like today for example. I'm taking SnapChat out for a spin in southern Arizona & New Mexico (off Interstate 10) & storytelling..
and then we get to try lots of stuff
Yes Reflection! Need multiple lenses, not just what I learned, but focus on what next step in learning is https://t.co/dz3ZgHkCG6
A4: Personalized: allows me to tinker, reflect & figure out what will work best for my Ss. Growth occurs & actions change for me
iTime is like genius hour but it is inquiry based. Every Ss in my school does this and it's awesome.
We're all marketers in the classroom. We want kids to buy our curriculum. They don't have a choice, however
Exactly! This is why PD led by a school's own teachers would work. Share the work.
The toughest part of all? Some Ss need it one way, the others need it the other. That is why it is so hard.
great idea!! https://t.co/ELqpOWMFlP
You can use a 'Tweet of the week' in your Friday Focus to show staff the powerful learning available with Twitter.
A5 PD'ing around the Sonora Desert you gotta believe I'm gonna hydrate.
Let's have at it, . This chat needs serious life-saving measures. https://t.co/F6F1eEVT95
Well, I would have quite unpopular views (judging by many tweets on ). Let's see...
A5: A bowl of skittles, a rainbow of colors like a rainbow of different learners!
Gotta run! Have a great weekend!!
Make sure it stays organic.
iTime is like genius hour but it is inquiry based. Every Ss in my school does this and it's awesome.
These kids don't remember a time before Google was invented. We're the only ones with issues;)
I can "geek out" on anything -- reflecting on the factors that contribute to that
I would say there is. I also think you can offer PD in those areas for all, but also personalize it for all
I know I already have my summer genius hour project: creating yearl-long game, quests, missions to gamify class
and I think that's impacted by building & district leadership.

Q4: You don't want Ts sitting in PD watching the clock. Somedays my learning comes reading Twitter while blow drying my hair.
A5: I'll even make my Rice Krispie treats into hashtags, Twitter bird, or Pinterest logo! I'm creative!
How is that different? Can kids guide themselves?
Read Guest post! "The Power of Connections to Help Our Students Reach Their Aspirations” TY https://t.co/HPrXiiHjC2
A6 Thank you for the opportunity for personalized PDPs, acceptance, and for being my PLN tribe!
Personalized means valuable to the person and structured for each individual. Doesn't always mean "Pick What You Want."
is doing awesome distributed work to empower educators to take the lead on their own learning.
A5.Sorry to be a DD, but the kind of "PD" found on Pinterest is not one I'd encourage colleagues to attend. https://t.co/l7K1qiwDMh
I don't think so just those topics need to relate to each content area for deeper impact.
Very true, we are content marketers, but not for tech products, for learning and growth.
Considering I don't have a fence, I guess it is. is organizing International day 7/14
Yes! I don't care if the coffee is bad if the learning is awesome!!
Ts need to have the reflection skills to figure out what they need then be able to find the fit to their needs.
however, how does a child know what they dont want to learn w/o some ref. point?
. For sure. Crap rolls downhill. :)
yes. Maybe schools need an annual audit for TTWWADI.
Why partnership between Ts, Ss, and admins, is so, so, important.
bring in Ts and look at the schedule, give them a voice!
what if required training was leveled with multiple points of entry depending on individual needs. Too often not
A5. Pintester Recipe Fails?
Challenge my friends! Let's show our Ss the + power of social media to make a difference for https://t.co/k3vRtWPumj
What's the deal with ? Doesn't the question have enough macs? Who ARE these people?
This brings up a better Q: How to help educators be discerning when it comes to online personalized PD. https://t.co/whSedWXHe1
A5.Sorry to be a DD, but the kind of "PD" found on Pinterest is not one I'd encourage colleagues to attend. https://t.co/l7K1qiwDMh
A5 A word about licorice whips.. That should be about as twisted as your thinking gets.
I do think we are too accepting of those "realities." Many are seriously pushing back with success.
I'm not a math teacher & I went to 3 of sessions at last yr.
A4: Personalized PD is giving Ts voice and choice in what they want to learn.
We ask our Ss to explore how they learn best, what fires them up, we need to do the same for Ts!
A4: Traditional says here's what you will learn, personalized says what do you want to learn
great point. I would add the interest to want to change. Many are happy where they are. Tough nut to crack.
A deep dive into how one school built a competency-based learning system: https://t.co/swy2mPcLYV Would work for PD, too.
Right! One's growth area is just outside the codify zone! https://t.co/jvd17owjea
A4: PL doesn’t always mean learn whatever you want. It can mean learn in a growth area in a way that makes sense for you.
Lifelong learning. https://t.co/JvYpAwKgBX

A3 A recent iTime project into flying machines for a G1 student resulted in the building of this helicopter https://t.co/Augq9uNSIA
A4 . Shouldn't evidence of student learning be driving my personal learning if I am accountable for my teaching decisions.
personalize and open for drink of choice. Whatever makes T content! To keep adults happy & focused https://t.co/IBdQSRfvcs
try inquiry and student driven learning. No need for the "sage on the stage" model, that time has past!
Is there a need for both?
Thoughts on why? I don't use it nearly as much as Twitter, but have found some really valuable ideas on Pinterest.
So sorry that I have to hop out😥 Thanks to all for the learning!
Not at all, but does all "required" training have to look same for every individual? Must all be face-to-face
. Agreed. Good teachers accept the realities but work around and through them for kids.
so many great opportunities available for the taking: IRL, Connected Eds, SM, Twitter -choice is there & needs to be celebrated!
Tgiffffffffffffffffto moi! 🎉🍸🎉🍸🎉🍸😊😂😜😜😜
is now trending WorldWide, ranking 24 [14:06]
I seriously love the idea. Used to have "sit around my kitchen table PD days..." not the same ring to it.
kids now - 6th grade down - can't remember before Google and smartphones. No patience with our nonsense
A4: It starts with relationships. Honesty and respect. Ts feel safe to seek what they need to be successful in the classroom.
A thousand times YES. May we all have great coaches that help us navigate the balance:

and exactly why we need to differentiate
Best success we've had w/ Ts choice was when we did a modified EdCamp for PD last month. https://t.co/kkh2jiDn2v Awesome feedback!
1. I am allergic to buzzwords ("authentic", "21st c skills" etc). Platitudes that do not stand closer scrutiny.
Great this morning!!! Headed to enjoy the weather and watch graduation.
A5: I agree with whoever said iced coffee! ☕️☕️❄️❄️
I've found that a lot of Pintrest leads to broken links and bad pedagogy.
Let's not forget: Traditional is also 'comfortable' and nostalgic. Embracing the new & unknown means leaving your comfort zone
iTime is completely indiv. It is proposed and conducted in class time. Even K students do this.
Best part about Twitterchats & PLN is respectful exchange of ideas. Everyone wins with a variety of ideas
odds are your students did not though.
Guides navigate;they have exp-each trip is different;Ts are guides-depending on Ss each exp is different
I wonder what a group of attorneys and MDs would say about this morning's chat.
A5: with themed and inspiring messages!
Agreed. Then go back to the why: It's best for our kids.
. But pushback is contextual. Some leadership build cultures and environments where it is not possible.
Even subway rats can stir passion to those how find them relevant.

Sharing & organizing ideas is what Pinterest is about & what's valuable. There r several options besides Pinterest. Find what works
I never played well with others when learning. Ever. Too intense, too personal when done right.
My students read, write, reflect & connect more when they have choice of content, authentic purpose & voice
My experience has been exactly the opposite.Might be that effective literacy pedagogy doesn't translate to Pinterest?
bookmarking this for the more difficult days. Thank you so much! <3
Cutting out early
Thanks for a great discussion.
Have a great weekend.
Right. Use your time wisely in classroom. Sometimes they just need a quick clarification to get on track.
Shout out to ! They rock because they engage & push thinking.
A5 Iced coffee and seasonal fruit. Is this question a psych experiment?
A6. My Voxer Pick Me Up You Rock
I find pinterest has good ideas but it eats my time wading through it to mine for the gold nuggets
Platitudes? Buzzwords? Self-promotion? And I thought it was about good pedagogy.
and then I work hard to get out of the way.
A6 My PLN Rocks (and Rolls).. I guess what I'm saying is they gather no moss. What we do gather are perspectives & ideas..
The ethnic-racial cleansing of Whites in their traditional homelands must be stopped.
Yes, some don't want to do this for themselves or their students. https://t.co/XqZ10n3t8u
Let's not forget: Traditional is also 'comfortable' and nostalgic. Embracing the new & unknown means leaving your comfort zone
(Drum roll)... So, are we powerless to change it?
Agree, but words do create a common language of explanation. Words not the problem, it is trust in message.
stop. you are making too much sense again.
. Also, some people are too dismissive of the realities teachers face and assume they can change things.
A6: I can't pick just a few. I do look to my PLN first. Also the and tribes are pretty awesome!
Can we also add music to that list? Please???? That would ROCK! (Literally)
I think I am a good coach but I could not be without having my own coaches from SM, colleagues, prof books. Hope I am helping
Or an AWESOME hour of buzzword bingo! AirHockey app got me through some awful PD.
I found blogging about the stuck bits or hard bits helped me move through them.
I don't know, but it's fun! 😂😂😂
Thanks ! Loved the chat this morning! Getting ready for Elevating Instruction Advocacy learning
just woke up and jumping in- Dawn from Indy i teach K-5 science
Maybe the biggest Q for teachers is - can they teach when lesson plans can't be followed and students access all information?
Transitioning now to husband/dad. Thanks for the learning this a.m. especially for his guidance.
Standing ovation!

Sounds like model helps to motivate staff and fun! Go figure. True teacher collaboration! https://t.co/kpwJkOu6PP
Traditional PD= someone gives me what they think I need to learn; Personalized PD= I figure out what I need & go learn about it!
A6: Shout out: with & from was pretty awesome. GREAT educators and ITRTs.
What about a genius hour and makerspace for teachers?
I know, right? I'm sure they need to use the same definition
My fav Pinterest resources have all been / ideas. Maybe diff topics=better ideas.
A6. Shout out Thank you all for creating !
A6: Shout out: for introducing me to Twitter for PD
Yes! I love music while learning.
that's the most important part!

The comfort zone is where success brings motivation, the motivation brings the desire to stretch outside that zone!
. I see great examples of teachers pushing back for change on behalf of kids. Yet, much depends on leader.
I greatly appreciate & trust , & tweeps: they're my PD go-tos, been-theres, got-your-backs!
Thank you for the wake-up call!
there's only one human set of rules, teachers can't have more autonomy than kids

Thanks to all for another energizing . Off to lacrosse. :) Happy Saturday!
Thanks! I will check it out
Thanks for a great start to my weekend! Time to face
