Q1: The edu-pirate movement has nothing to do w/attacking & robbing ships....it's the spirit! What is it about the spirit of a pirate that makes for a great educator? #akedchat
Q1: The edu-pirate movement has nothing to do w/attacking & robbing ships....it's the spirit! What is it about the spirit of a pirate that makes for a great educator? #akedchat
A1. The Spirit, The willingness to do what ever it takes to ensure your students succeed! Pirates are willing to take great risks for great rewards! Arrgh. #akedchat
Q1: The edu-pirate movement has nothing to do w/attacking & robbing ships....it's the spirit! What is it about the spirit of a pirate that makes for a great educator? #akedchat
A1: Everyday we ask our Ss to take chances, to do things they may not have done before. When we take that leap of faith with them it shows them we are willing be there with them.#akedchat
Q1: The edu-pirate movement has nothing to do w/attacking & robbing ships....it's the spirit! What is it about the spirit of a pirate that makes for a great educator? #akedchat
A1-Pirates are loyal to their ship and would do what it takes to see it succeed. Same goes for our schools. Loyalty and the willingness to work hard to see everyone is successful. Successful ship is everything to a Pirate. Successful classroom, students is everything #akedchat
A1: So many things! Being fearless and willing to go out on a limb (to the edge of the plank) to try something new. Charting new waters is hard, often scary, but WORTH IT! #akedchat#tlap#leadlap#LearnLAP

A1 The whole premise of this quote feels very Alaskan! Lots of our students' parents are fishermen or in the US Coast Guard, so our families and community members do this type of work every day. We need to embrace that risk-taking in our jobs teaching their children #akedchat
A1 The whole premise of this quote feels very Alaskan! Lots of our students' parents are fishermen or in the US Coast Guard, so our families and community members do this type of work every day. We need to embrace that risk-taking in our jobs teaching their children #akedchat
A1B: Pirates don't give up when circumstances seem impossible. There's always a way out, another route, a hidden passage. Pirates are relentless. #akedchat
Q2: A core value we hold true as PIRATE educators is that we are all on the same team. What steps can you take to help eliminate the "us vs. them" mentality we so often see in schools? #AKedchat
A1: pirates have no fear of failing and are passionate about what they do! As educators we need to find that passion and model risk taking for our students and crew! All hands on deck for these kids!! #tlap#leadlap#akedchat
Q2: A core value we hold true as PIRATE educators is that we are all on the same team. What steps can you take to help eliminate the "us vs. them" mentality we so often see in schools? #AKedchat
A2: Twitter is a great place to start! Connects Ls & Ts across content areas, at all grade levels, everywhere on the planet. Only requirement is passion for the profession (and a Twitter account). #akedchat#tlap#leadlap#LearnLAP
Q2: A core value we hold true as PIRATE educators is that we are all on the same team. What steps can you take to help eliminate the "us vs. them" mentality we so often see in schools? #AKedchat
A2: That can be difficult. It starts with culture within your building, then district, then you can branch out. Finding the strengths in your staff then leveraging that is a great way to start. #akedchat
A2: If you are a PIRATE leader, it starts with you. Acknowledge that you aren't the only expert in the room. Recognize greatness in your team and be willing to learn from them. #akedchat
A2: Collaboration is so powerful but all members involved need to have equal billing and respect. I think we eliminate the us vs them mentality when we practice humility and reach out and help each other . #akedchat
Q2: A core value we hold true as PIRATE educators is that we are all on the same team. What steps can you take to help eliminate the "us vs. them" mentality we so often see in schools? #AKedchat
A2- as a school leader a lot major decisions are made with the collaboration and input from many different groups on campus. They come to a consensus of what is best for the campus. The principal is the captain but respects and honors the other crew members opinion. #akedchat
#akedchat A2 Get input. Our administrators are creating some surveys for teachers, parents, and community members so we can build programs together. Our superintendent acknowledged that people were less excited about following his ideas than their own ideas. Ask and get input.
Well said, Brent. As a principal I always made it a practice to "talk last". I'd pose a question or a challenge and ask "What do you think?" My role... summarize and synthesize. #akedchat
Q3 One of the key tenets of #tlap is, "Don't just teach a lesson, create an EXPERIENCE!" How can we transform lessons, PD, & even staff meetings into next-level experiences? #akedchat#LeadLAP
I'm impressed by Ts in my schools on a daily basis. Hardest working group out there, and so many innovative ideas. Five minutes on Twitter is always huge reminder of the power of a PLN, too. Smartest person in the room is the room! @gcouros#akedchat
A2: If you are a PIRATE leader, it starts with you. Acknowledge that you aren't the only expert in the room. Recognize greatness in your team and be willing to learn from them. #akedchat
Well said, Staci! I would add that everyone also needs to have the same working definition of what consensus means... it isn't that everyone has to agree! #akedchat
Q3 One of the key tenets of #tlap is, "Don't just teach a lesson, create an EXPERIENCE!" How can we transform lessons, PD, & even staff meetings into next-level experiences? #akedchat#LeadLAP
A3: Transform lessons into experiences by pulling out things Ss can DO instead of STUDY. Create great PD by personalizing for Ts & providing choice, use Skype or GHO to bring in experts, & create a theme & have fun. #akedchat
Encouragement to get out and take those risks is important, too. Sometimes an invitation to innovate and show off a great lesson idea is all it takes to give T confidence to launch. Love it @tara_devaughn! #akedchat
I love that your teachers impress you, Tamara. Too often admin looks at what needs to be "fixed". Ts need for us to see the greatness in them. #akedchat
A3- we transform our PDs like teachers transform their classrooms. We also do student led PD. We strive for our PD to be what we want to see in the classroom. #akedchat
I think the main thing is to jump right in & part of the process. I provide one extra period off to all 80 Ts during the yr so I stay in the know. Also ask for feedback & do something w it. #akedchat
Q2: A core value we hold true as PIRATE educators is that we are all on the same team. What steps can you take to help eliminate the "us vs. them" mentality we so often see in schools? #AKedchat
#akedchat I appreciate the idea of having humility and being humble. It's a great trait in true leaders. It's tough to balance being humble with taking pride in our work and wanting to speak up about the good work we are so passionate about.
A3: we have to let our passion for the subject and for teaching shine. Be willing to take a risk, get excited, remember what it was like to be a kid. #akedchat
A3: Building the experience can be tough for sure. Kids need buy in and it is a change that they resist. Engagement is key but I am still trying to figure out the best formula. #akedchat
Q3 One of the key tenets of #tlap is, "Don't just teach a lesson, create an EXPERIENCE!" How can we transform lessons, PD, & even staff meetings into next-level experiences? #akedchat#LeadLAP
A3: make staff meetings and PD amazing for your crew...make it fun and memorable...make it soulful and they will talk about it and model it for their students... #akedchat
A3 design with your heart! Ask yourself some questions: would I enjoy this PD? would I want to participate in this lesson? would this learning be engaging and/or empowering for me ? Is this designed for me or my audience? #AKedchat
A3: Transform lessons into experiences by pulling out things Ss can DO instead of STUDY. Create great PD by personalizing for Ts & providing choice, use Skype or GHO to bring in experts, & create a theme & have fun. #akedchat
A3. Create some anticipation. PD cannot be "more of the same" create an environment where people are active and engaged, an environment where folks are excited about what they are about to learn.
Laundry lists of information can come in via email. #akedchat
Q3 One of the key tenets of #tlap is, "Don't just teach a lesson, create an EXPERIENCE!" How can we transform lessons, PD, & even staff meetings into next-level experiences? #akedchat#LeadLAP
A3: Make them engaging. Ban the sit-and-get in classrooms, meetings, PD. Don't just tell or show, get your hands dirty and experience the learning. Take time to practice right here and now. THAT'S what learning is all about! #akedchat#tlap#leadlap#learnlap#ditchbook#ditchHW
Q3 One of the key tenets of #tlap is, "Don't just teach a lesson, create an EXPERIENCE!" How can we transform lessons, PD, & even staff meetings into next-level experiences? #akedchat#LeadLAP
Great ??? I am working now to try to redesign PD & staff mtgs to model risk taking as well as exp we want for our Ss. My Ts way outshine my efforts so I also ask them to share w ea other througb PD. Experts leading.
#akedchat
A2 the more inter-grade collaborating that you can make happen the less - us / they because teachers will tend to see themselves as allll being responsible for, and connected to, all students. #AKedchat
Q4: PIRATE educators are relentless about seeking out and nurturing the greatness of others. What are some of the ways you encourage others to be AMAZING? #AKedchat
#akedchat A3 Right now our state (like many others) is in a budget crunch and it's sometimes hard to imagine how to create an "experience" without buying additional tools, props, etc. I love your example in Teach Like a Pirate of having a simple box (storage bin) be a hook.
But we can strike this balance. 3 goals for me in any conversation:
1. Did the T feel valued?
2. Did I add value?
3. Did I push thinking and practice?
Relationships and trust help with this balance. #akedchat
A4: Find solutions for Ts when they have complaints. Show the way to DO instead of GRIPE. Taking initiative doesn't come naturally to everyone. Help them cross that bridge to innovation. #akedchat
I so want to give a talk (or at least see one done by someone!) to a T audience with a music video style. Need movement. Need energy. Need inspiring message. Need music-synched lights! 😊#AKedchat
A4: Kids and adults it is the same. Show them their thoughts are important, that we care about what they care about and give them a chance to share it. They will shine. #akedchat
Q4: PIRATE educators are relentless about seeking out and nurturing the greatness of others. What are some of the ways you encourage others to be AMAZING? #AKedchat
A4. We should recognize the greatness in the individual. Personalized learning applies to the adult too.
Not everyone communicates or learns in the same way. Our task is to find that one "thing" for each individual and coach the heck out of them.
#akedchat
Q4: PIRATE educators are relentless about seeking out and nurturing the greatness of others. What are some of the ways you encourage others to be AMAZING? #AKedchat
A4- it’s a balance. They need to feel valued and encouraged but you also have to be able to find a way to push them beyond what they thought they were capable of. Going beyond what you thought was possible isnwhere you will find greatness #akedchat
A4: encouraging my crew to be mentors to each other, to take risks and to have fun! Kids love it when their teachers and principal are all piratey!! #AKedchat
This is wonderful. Seriously, I think I'm going to write this on my desk tomorrow. Sometimes it's better to lead by asking a question or using silence (our "listening ears"). #akedchat
A4: I’ve found when I’m vulnerable, seek out feedback, and implement new ideas/apply feedback, it shows other Ts that I value their thoughts, opinions, and professional #akedchat
I 💙💙💙 showcasing the talent in our bldg!!! I do this through a wkly newsletter, we tweet, & I ask them to share. Also have a key grp who try new things & prob solve. #observeme for feedback is also used. #akedchat
Q4: PIRATE educators are relentless about seeking out and nurturing the greatness of others. What are some of the ways you encourage others to be AMAZING? #AKedchat
A4 celebrating others with Shout Outs .. celebrate peers with notes & surprises, celebrate with acts of kindness - I think being valued is encouraging #AKedchat
Q5: Content is the tip of the iceberg! We have a mightier purpose... #LifeChangers How can/do you embed LCLs (Life-Changing Lessons) into your class and system? #akedchat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4: This year we have crop of new Ts who are active on Twitter. Very cool to see how jazzed they get when tagged in a tweet or celebrated in a RT. So simple, yet huge impact. #trendthepositive#akedchat#tlap#leadlap
Q4: PIRATE educators are relentless about seeking out and nurturing the greatness of others. What are some of the ways you encourage others to be AMAZING? #AKedchat
A5: By teaching Ss in each lesson to analyze the premise (author's generally) and not to just accept it. Look at all sides. Challenge Ss to do more than they thought they could, better than they thought was possible. #akedchat
Q5: Content is the tip of the iceberg! We have a mightier purpose... #LifeChangers How can/do you embed LCLs (Life-Changing Lessons) into your class and system? #akedchat#tlap#LeadLAP
Q5: Content is the tip of the iceberg! We have a mightier purpose... #LifeChangers How can/do you embed LCLs (Life-Changing Lessons) into your class and system? #akedchat#tlap#LeadLAP
A5: I try to provide LCL’s with a focus on learning not performing. Trying to show my Ss it’s okay to not get something the first time around but that doesn’t mean you stop trying. Lots of feedback that leads to reassessing. #akedchat
A5: Through the literature we look at. Powerful Picture Books and Novels that extend my Ss beyond their own walls. We talk Mirrors and Windows but I want books to be doors that take them places that change them for the better #akedchat
Q5: Content is the tip of the iceberg! We have a mightier purpose... #LifeChangers How can/do you embed LCLs (Life-Changing Lessons) into your class and system? #akedchat#tlap#LeadLAP
A5: life changing lessons or teachable moments are the peanut butter on my jelly sandwich...it is where the magic and power of learning happens #akedchat
A5 I think these life-changing lessons are the sit on the floor, have a real conversation about lessons Ss care about - listen with your heart, do more listening than talking - let Ss share, learn, grow. . See that you care. See you Believe in them. #AKedchat
Yes, yes, and yes @KimSnodgrass Sad how hesitant Ts are to share sometimes. Education has operated on "independent contractor" mentality for too long. Need to create opportunities to showcase and celebrate; make those great ideas public and invite replication. #akedchat#tlap
I love this, Tamara. Such a great way for them to learn and share! LOVE that they are sharing and seeing their work has value and influences others. #akedchat
Q5: Content is the tip of the iceberg! We have a mightier purpose... #LifeChangers How can/do you embed LCLs (Life-Changing Lessons) into your class and system? #akedchat#tlap#LeadLAP
A5b: Bring the world into the classroom with guest speakers, virtual speakers, mystery GHO's or Skypes, and give Ss an audience beyond the school they're in as well. #akedchat
Q5: Content is the tip of the iceberg! We have a mightier purpose... #LifeChangers How can/do you embed LCLs (Life-Changing Lessons) into your class and system? #akedchat#tlap#LeadLAP
A4 #akedchat I've read a lot of @shawnachor 's work about gratitude. I have students write about what they are grateful for (beyond just Thanksgiving) and I want to write notes to students letting them know what amazing things I see in them! It's challenging with 150+ students!
Q5: Content is the tip of the iceberg! We have a mightier purpose... #LifeChangers How can/do you embed LCLs (Life-Changing Lessons) into your class and system? #akedchat#tlap#LeadLAP
Q6: We've talked a lot about ways to make school AMAZING for kids... but we want this for the adults in our system, too! How do you take care of the adults in your school in addition to the kids? #AKedchat
A6: Letting them know that they have been heard, that they are valued. Shout outs, treat days, listing to suggestions & rolling out a few of them. Validate the good that's being done in the classrooms. #akedchat
A6-Notes of thankfulness and appreciation. During December we hung stockings outside their room and out a treat in it every couple of days. We encouraged the students to make cards to put in the stockings. Anything we can do to say how much we appreciate them #akedchat
A6: I think this works back to the earlier question. Placing no value on the Teachers or having the thought that the teachers don't want "what is best for kids" is crazy and yet some Administrators feel this is true. #akedchat We must see Ts are invested in success of Ss
Q6: We've talked a lot about ways to make school AMAZING for kids... but we want this for the adults in our system, too! How do you take care of the adults in your school in addition to the kids? #AKedchat
A5: Whew! LCLs must involve risk, support, and new learning (& confidence that S can learn tough stuff). Must include time and plenty of opportunities for reflection -- in both S learning and with PD. #akedchat
Q5: Content is the tip of the iceberg! We have a mightier purpose... #LifeChangers How can/do you embed LCLs (Life-Changing Lessons) into your class and system? #akedchat#tlap#LeadLAP
Q6: We try to figure out what (beyond Ss) makes our staff tick. Food & jeans seem to do the trick. Also leave notes of recognition on doors, tweet it, & send vox messages. Trying to fill the bucket & support their goals. #akedchat
Q6: We've talked a lot about ways to make school AMAZING for kids... but we want this for the adults in our system, too! How do you take care of the adults in your school in addition to the kids? #AKedchat
A6cont: Admin that sees teachers as an ally and not an obstacle will see Ss receiving the best instruction. We all like to feel valued. Ts need to give those shout outs to admin as well. #akedchat
#AKedchat
A6: Have each other's backs! Share successes, failures, ideas, and most of all friendship! Relentlessly reassure each other that everything is gonna be ok! #AKedchat
A6: new counselor in my building this year and she is amazing at this! Not only having us write thank you notes to students but also Ts for inspiring us to bring our best. #akedchat
A6 A kind word, a note, an email can move mountains. We have a shout out board for staff to praise each other. Start every meeting with a celebration! #akedchat
A6: new counselor in my building this year and she is amazing at this! Not only having us write thank you notes to students but also Ts for inspiring us to bring our best. #akedchat
Q7: It's Challenge Time! No excuses! PIRATE edu overcome obstacles, break barriers, crush critics, and sail forward. Share one PIRATE commitment you will make this week. #AKedchat
A6: Make time to listen, even when you don't have much time. Gift chocolate and coffee. Smile (a lot). Be generous with compliments. Offer opportunities and celebrate achievements. Education is all about people -- Ss and Ts (and Ls) need to know you care. #akedchat
Q6: We've talked a lot about ways to make school AMAZING for kids... but we want this for the adults in our system, too! How do you take care of the adults in your school in addition to the kids? #AKedchat
#akedchat A6 Our 6th grade team made ourselves a behavior plan with a reward chart! Basically whenever we saw someone else on our team doing something amazing, we filled out a square on a grid where some numbers were pre-selected as winners. .We won prizes like cookies!
#akedchat I am seeing a food theme coming up in this question a lot! This reminds me of Ron Clark's stories about cookies at our state conference in Fairbanks.
A6: Publicly show your appreciation... Write a letter to your superintendent and/or school board highlighting the strengths of one of your teachers. Do one each month. #akedchat
A7: Making Time for Ss choice is showing understanding. Trying it with end of Whole Class Novel responses. Not sure what I am going to get but excited for the process (kind of lol ) #akedchat
Q7: It's Challenge Time! No excuses! PIRATE edu overcome obstacles, break barriers, crush critics, and sail forward. Share one PIRATE commitment you will make this week. #AKedchat
A7- committing to take care of my commitments. take care of several commitments that have been put off for various reasons. After that keeping up with all of my commitments from here on out and not procrastinating. #akedchat
A7: Just one commitment? Ha. Okay. I commit to doing better at being "Present in the Moment" with Ss and staff so that they know I value their time, and I value them. #akedchat
Thank you so much to #akedchat for inviting us to moderate tonight!! @burgess_shelley and I enjoyed connecting with you! #tlap#LeadLAP Thanks to all who joined in from elsewhere, too!!
We hope you will add more UN into your system this week!! We need more UN! This is a page from P is for Pirate that I wrote with @burgess_shelley#akedchat#tlap
A7: with the end of the semester quickly approaching I have a handful of geometry students that are in danger of failing. Committing to finding a way for them to show me what they know and thinking outside the box to get there. #akedchat
A7: Take 30 minutes out of each day to appreciate something about others on your team. Visit 15 classrooms for 2 min each and leave a note of appreciation for something you saw. #akedchat
A7: say thank you to kids for being kind and thoughtful and count smiles and share it out to the whole school...how many smiles will you count this week? #akedchat
Thanks for a great chat! Just what I needed in this final push to end the semester. Love how connecting with other Ts and Ls fills my bucket back up! #akedchat

And here I thought it was the other way around! I totally learn from the Burgess school of EDU. Keep up the great work! The landscape is changing...more...piratey. :) #BetterTogether#akedchat
