#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.

So lets share what our professional and Hip-Hop connections are so that we can build a stronger community where we go from connecting virtually to advancing our collective work #HipHopEd
In addition to being one of the leaders of #HipHopEd I develop and implement middle and high school youth programming for a community based organization in WDC.
The work of #HipHopEd continued to expand throughout 2017 so we really appreciate everyone who has participated in a chat and or just connected with work in their own way
First day of #Kwanzaa & the first principle is #Umoja - community & unity. Tonights #HipHopEd chat focuses on building our community by sharing our experiences/advice
#HipHopEd is a movement where Hip-Hop is presented as a culture worthy of academic study, utilization and critique as way for us to grow as educators and care takers of the culture, our youth and our communities
Heads like @DrJamesPeterson transformed my thinking and understanding of HH mentoring, and I'd eventually come to be real close with Greg Dimitriadis (RIP)... my second major #HipHopEd mentor
This is my 16th year as a HS English teacher in suburban Milwaukee. Learned about #hiphoped in about 2012, been grinding ever since. I'm happy to connect with people and discuss what #hiphoped looks like in my classroom! Just holler!

So what's indispensable for #HipHopEd and HH in general is QUALITY mentoring--through and for HH, the culture, and our young folk, empowering them to take themselves and their stories seriously
This is one of my brothers who getting know through twitter doesn't do him justice. If you are in or near #ATX you must holla at my brother @raptjr#HipHopEd

The kind of teacher you will become is directly related to the kind of teachers you associate with. Avoid people who are unhappy and disgruntled about the possibilities for transforming education. They are the enemy of the spirit of the teacher #HipHopEd
The longer teachers teach, the better they are at their practice. That practice may serve to empower students or it may break the students’ spirit. That decision belongs to the teacher #HipHopEd
We are two educators, one a Lang Arts teacher in an El Paso middle school, the other English and African American Studies at Penn State outside of Philly #HipHopEd
Diane here. 23 years as a world language teacher - both Spanish & ELL. Currently at my second IB school in Vegas. 2x Peace Corps volunteer. Also taught 2 years in México #HipHopEd

Any advice you receive about teaching that involves you not being who you are will steal the energy you have for teaching and have you spending it on pretending #HipHopEd
I’ve worked with students with special needs. Currently, working with middle grades in Washington, D.C. In addition to writing about education. #HipHopEd
What’s up Ed-fam? Douglas. Middle school social studies teacher of 6 years. Raleigh, NC. Constantly working to change narratives, fighting for social justice and trying to stay fly while doing it #HipHopEd
And often, so many folks sleepwalk through the work forgetting that we are here to plant seeds of curiosity in fertile minds, water them, and help them grow. The myth that children need, and want, fencing in is just that...a myth. #HipHopEd

I met @husslington IRL via @HSRA_MN circa 2008. I started participating #hiphoped chats pretty much from the beginning...looking out for/mentor youth in MN, trying to link local/national/global hiphop folks, and I co-founded @GiantStepsMN w/ @manifestive.

This is true in music, too: Anyone who tells you to be anything other than what you are is leading you in the wrong direction. There is a market for your unique brand. #hiphopedhttps://t.co/D99GAC12dx

We spend a considerable amount of time and research talking about how curriculum is antiquated for youth. We must also begin to look closely at the ways in which school work spaces are horrible for the folx who work there. #HipHopEd
I'm working on transforming Lang Arts education in urban schools and for all marginalized youth through culturally sustaining and pedagogies of resistance. Esp. Interested in literacy developed later in life and w/ digital natives #HipHopEd
I'll take every opportunity to also share @TheNarcicyst's vid for "Hamdulillah". Besides being a great track, the video features many great hip hop folks focused on unity and community. #hiphoped
Half of the reason pedagogy is antiquated and harmful is because school work spaces are antiquated and harmful. They don’t encourage innovation or collaboration. Let’s rethink educational spaces in 2018. #HipHopEd

For lessons learned, we are always reminded of just how many non-HH folk require justification for not only #HipHopEd, but also who we are, the classroom cyphers we craft, the deep rapport w/ Ss... folk think it's a game. This is who we are and we know no other way to teach.
At the core of effective classrooms are authentic relationships between adult and peers. Be real with your and have their best interest at heart. #HipHopEd
I am constantly working to improve my teaching for the young folx in my classroom, but as an employee I don’t have access to quality break spaces, quality food on campus, collaborative work spaces and no thought goes into what I need to be great in the classroom. #HipHopEd

#HipHopEd has helped me become a better teacher educator. Being a middle/high school teacher for 9 yrs, it was a challenge connecting to elementary preservice teachers, #hiphop has helped me open up & be more real
Schools talk a whole lot about innovation and technology in education. Take a look at how tech companies structure their work spaces physically. You get innovation when folks are inspired and work spaces are quality. Build better schools in 2018. #HipHopEd
I can definitely put some feelers out, and I'm sure our HHE family can as well, if we understand your situation a bit more. Would you mind emailing everything to TheRealHipHopEd@gmail.com? #HipHopEd

Lessons learned: When in doubt, love first. Love when it's hard. Love when it's easy. Love when you don't know what to do. Just put love in action and you'll be alright. #hiphoped
I must add that this year has been great for hip hop music. A lot of dope young artist came in the game and dropped gems to help develop and diversify lessons plans in some very beautiful ways. #HipHopEd
This year has been a great year for Hip-Hop and we have been able to effectively bring this energy and ingenuity into the classroom in a very sincere and sustainable way #HipHopEd
Not all skin folk are kin folk. Not everyone who talks revolution is willing to walk it. Understand that early and save yourself a lot of heartache #HipHopEd
Khalilah, mom and ed justice advocate among many hats. First love to this family. Second, the best advice for use of #HipHopEd is suspending assumptions about why kids will connect. It has immense literary value beyond being culturally relatable.
So true. I see so many novice teachers who try to “wing it” thinking the kids won’t know. Just like kids can identify a bad song, they know discombobulated teaching. #hiphoped
This is a fact. I know POC who have negative perceptions of brown and Black youth. Band with people who have positive energy and genuinely care about the youth! #HipHopEd

I will be vulnerable and acknowledge that this year has shown me that I belong in spaces that were seemingly reserved for traditionally trained educators. I take my esteem to youth to inspire them forward #hiphoped
We also learned a grip this year on classroom/teacher/student vulnerability -- and cultivating a classroom climate that celebrates it, sees vulnerabilities as inseparable from learning and growing in #hiphoped

TRUE! Taught in a middle school for several years and I always wrote the objective for the on the board. The students became eager daily to see what the objective was! #HipHopEd
Since we're also talking community+collaboration: At @GiantStepsMN, we connect and provide prof devt for hip hop folks (and more), ages 17-85. #HipHopEd is how Nora and @NatalieCrue and I connected. #HipHopEd is also the way that @BIG_HASS became a part of our #giantstepsfam.
#hiphoped Going to teach students should be about how you can use discourse to enlighten one another. My kids in #ATL and #Memphis taught me so much more than any class I took!
This is God's work because we always go deeper than what we claim to be implementing the curriculum to prevent. It's beautiful and unique every time #HipHopEd#HipHopDev
Getting to know & work with the local #hiphop community has been a blessing this year. They have helped connect me & my pre-service teachers to #hiphop#HipHopEd
This year has been a great year for Hip-Hop and we have been able to effectively bring this energy and ingenuity into the classroom in a very sincere and sustainable way #HipHopEd
Teaching requires us to throw out what we think we know and examine our true intentions with teaching. Are we there to tell kids what to do or to help enlighten their journey? #hiphoped
We work from the premise that the educators need the same opportunities and supports that the students need in order for everyone to be successful together teaching and learning from one another #HipHopEd
“Yeah, I’m an emcee, yeah I’m a professor, yeah I’m an attorney/But if you’re paying attention that’s not where I began my journey...”

Not the focus of this chat, but I use hip hop examples in my MBA classes, including the stories of @HSRA, @rhymesayers, @Combat_Jack and what we can learn abt innovation and leading change from hip hop artists+shows. And I also learn from this group's teaching insights! #HipHopEd
Teaching requires near constant self-reflection. We are modeling life-long learning and growing....humility. If you teach because you like having an audience, you've got some more growing, and learning, to do. #HipHopEd
Absolutely! When educators are struggling they rely on outdated pedagogy to control kids instead feeling safe to innovate through (controlled) trial and error #HipHopEd

Also, @chrisemdin#ForWhiteFolks has helped me engage in parent-teacher conferences, PD’s and other academic spaces when I NEED to fight and SPEAK UP for our young people. Thank you fam!!! #HipHopEd
Planning for your lesson is valuable, but being willing to let go of that plan is even more so. It is only on the path away from where you started that you can get to where you want to go #HipHopEd
I had the pleasure and privilege of meeting my brother in the flesh this year and building with him and our students at @TempleUniv#HipHopEd@DMVCOASTIE

Kind of like marriage... RT @KingAdjapong: Teaching requires us to do self work to really understand ourselves and work through our personal trauma #hiphoped
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve recommended bright, wide eyed teachers a copy of @chrisemdin book. Sometimes, I’ll let them borrow my copy. There have even been times when I strongly suggest they read it before they step back into the classroom. #HipHopEd
Many teachers rely on stopping kids from talking because they fear the kids will get out of control. I believe if kids aren’t moving or talking then they’re not learning. #HipHopEd

Yes! Teachers need to know their students and their content. Sometimes this requires teachers to step out from where they are comfortable & try something new! #HipHopEd
Do you want to stick to the script/curriculum/standards or be a #HipHopEd(ucator). Do you want to do damage to the students or do damage to the system?
This is what good hip hop artists do, too: plan not just the set list, but the arc and energy of the show in advance....then stay open to moments of magic that might result from the chemistry with the crowd, or other artists, or your own inspiration. #HipHopEd
Planning for your lesson is valuable, but being willing to let go of that plan is even more so. It is only on the path away from where you started that you can get to where you want to go #HipHopEd
Yes‼️ @chrisemdin. During my 15 years as an elementary school teacher I rarely adhered 2 my lesson plan. Then... sneaking 2 infuse #HipHopEd. Sneaking is over y’all. #hiphopdev
