A 1 This year I helped fifth grade students reading far below grade level. My group was at a first grade instructional level.
Learned from the students all year and loved it! #NYEDChat
A1: When I was in the classroom I taught math all 7 years. So as a principal this year, I taught a reading lesson in every grade level (K-5) and had teacher critique me so I could learn and grow as an educator #SparksInTheDark#NYEDchat#kidsdeserveit
A1 - I’ve always wanted to make videos and just sort of dabbled around with it - THIS year, I made over a dozen long videos, steep learning curve but SO much fun! #NYEDChat#KidsDeserveIt
A1 One way I pushed myself outside my comfort zone this year was discussing with my students how we felt about the sexual misconduct allegations against one of our favorite authors: https://t.co/5NWVnyT0zG#nyedchat
A1- I transferred to a new school. New-to-me colleagues, kids, parents, school culture, and a steep learning curve. Good to be the 'new kid' once in awhile. #NYEDChat
A1 Hi there my friend. I know that you were busy with those 5th grade students this year. It must have been wonderful for them to have you coaching them to succeed. #NYEDChat
A1. This year I used Flipgrid, a lot. For an English teacher, moving away from writing was difficult, but I got so many more honest, heartfelt responses with Flipgrid, and it really expanded the walls of my classroom. The Ss loved having a voice! #nyedchat#kidsdeserveit
Hi everyone! James here, Year 13 student from New Zealand. Founder of the now closed @stuchatNZ. Haven't joined in any twitter chats recently but will be following along #nyedchat

A1: I did a few home visits this year over the breaks to see some of our kids who were struggling the most. It was different for them to see me outside of school! #kidsdeserveit#nyedchat
A1 I started a podcast @Quest4EdPodcast and also delivered both a TED style and Ignite talk. Those two were out of the comfort zone at the time but the experiences were all worth it. Sometimes you just have to jump and expect the net to be there. #NYEDChat#KidsDeservelt
A1) I tried some new tech tools like @Flipgrid and @DoInkTweets It was also fun to create a new school wide reading challenge and design a Carmen Sandiego lesson Check out my green screen experience at https://t.co/NsEZt0Ws0s#NYEDChat
Definitely pushing my staff and self with integrating technology to increase engagement. Personally made a goal to read at least a book a month. #nyedchat

A2 I have worked really hard to develop a very user friendly class website with Google Sites. Next year we are going to Schoology, so we shall see how that goes. #nyedchat
A2. With my Ss lately, it's been Fortnite. Engaging them in their hobbies has always been important, and it's nice to talk with them about something non-school related. With parents, I go back to @Flipgrid and the online conferences I set up with it. #nyedchat#kidsdeserveit

These students weren't asked to respond they came to me demanding to respond. Too often the voice of learners is absent. The passion for how they are learning is great in itself. Get involved in the NCEA review #NCEAreviewhttps://t.co/2A6D0L64hY
A2: So great to connect with students over a shared love of a great book, especially with middle schoolers who are in that special place between childhood and young adulthood. #nyedchat#kidsdeserveit#ReadMore

A1- New school & moved to 2nd grade after the last 10 years in early childhood! The only way to grow is to put yourself out there and fail forward! It’s been a valuable experience. #NYEDChat
I've connected with many Ss over the years by talking through all the Buffalo sports losses and epic fails. There's always next year! #ThisIsOurYear#NYEDChat

A3: I read "Wedgie and Gizmo" with a group of 3rd grade students who gave up one lunch a week to read with me. About 65 kiddos joined. It was so much fun! #NYEDChat
A3. I just read Unwind & I'll be teaching it next year. I cannot wait to have some incredible conversations with my Ss about it. I hear current Ss love it. I'm inhaling YA books lately. They are so full of meaningful plots that transcend the YA label. #nyedchat#kidsdeserveit
Connect with families with parent engagement events such as reading program developed in our school "start with books". Parents read with kids before school #NYEDChat

A3: Good books reading now for enjoyment and writer's craft: @gaepol's In Sight of Stars & The Memory of Things. Diversifying my reading life through variety of genre, topic, for pleasure, for professional use. #NYEDChat#KidsDeserveIt
A3: With students? "Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot" such a great story! Trying to bring scifi back into my reading life. It has always been my favorite genre, but I've been so busy to be able to open some of the books I've bought! #nyedchat
A1: Not necessarily comfort zone, but I just decided not to let the doubters about #stuvoice and #LivBit#haters get me down. My work is important for the world. I'm just moving forward. If U love doing something, do it. No matter what. #NYEDChat#kidsdeserveit#KidsCanTeachUs
A3: I’ve read a number of professional books. Last book I finished was The Power of Moments by Chip & Dan Heath. A great read. Diversifying my reading by incorporating a lot of general leadership books from many different walks of life. Great perspectives #NYEDChat
A3: Now that I think of it.... I haven't read a good book in a while! I did just finish Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda not too long ago but it's time to read something new! Any recommendations? #nyedchat
A3: I've been reading a school law book for grad school, just started #Culturize by @casas_jimmy... I'm diversifying by trusting in recommendations, even if they go against my norms.
#kidsdeserveit#nyedchat
One way I connected with kids ... open my room at lunch ... had the AP “Not sure what happened to all the 8th grade students” ... me ... I had like 40 in and around my room doing some Just Dance #nyedchat
It was definitely a concern at the start- it's a private group wherein members can either request to join (and must be approved by myself) or can be invited. I have tried alternatives in the past but have never had the kind of buy-in that I do now. #NYEDChat
A3- Covered library last Friday and I read Red by Michael Hall. Amazing story about a crayon that mislabeled his whole life and was always told he was wrong. Powerful message for children. #NYEDChat
A3 Be the One is a book I read recently. Love reading the Outsiders with my students. Can’t wait to receive a signed copy of Kids Deserve It. #nyedchat
A2- I connect with Ss by giving them a voice and showing them I listen. I ask Ss to write to me daily. I ask them what I should know about them and how we can improve OUR classroom. This sparks some insightful reflective dialogue. #NYEDChat
A3b: Also reading Guise of Another by @aeskens on the personal side of things. I've been realizing I've neglected this reading since starting grad. school again.
#NYEDChat#KidsDeservelt
Jumping in late. A2 My favorite way to connect with students is to talk and listen to them! Greetings, conferences, reflections! All day, every day! I love chatting with parents and emailing too. #NYEDChat#kidsdeserveit

A3: Sharing the Blue Crayon was the latest book that I have read. We are making a move towards being trauma informed and this was just the tip of the iceberg for my own learning. #kidsdeserveit#nyedchat
Q4: What advice would you give to a teacher who's struggling with keeping their joy? How do you stay focused on the positive yourself? #NYEDChat#KidsDeserveIt
Q4: What advice would you give to a teacher who's struggling with keeping their joy? How do you stay focused on the positive yourself? #NYEDChat#KidsDeserveIt
#nyedchat A3 as a mom who happens to work in schools, I worry that communication from me feels one sided. I know ppl are busy and worry how emails can be misinterpreted. Thankful for awesome school counselor that helps field my questions.
I just followed them!!!! Thank you for helping kids see how powerful this can be for lots of amazing learning!!!! #NYEDChat#kidsdeserveit#KidsCanTeachUs
In reply to
@StephStinemetz, @GavinShouldis, @AutumnShouldis
A3- read @KidsDeserveIt this past April with @christinelem while both on separate Vacations with family in different parts of the Sunshine State. I read it 4 days. Trying to convince admin team to read in fall. #NYEDChat
A3) I love to read Wonder every year but I also like to read Series of Unfortunate Events because it gets students hooked to the series and teaches so much Vocab. I am open to some great 5th grade read alouds! #NYEdchat
A4 - Simply remember you GET to work with kids, pace yourself, gather support from colleagues, smile smile smile smile smile smile smile. #NYEDChat#KidsDeserveIt
A2 First & foremost connect face 2 face & find out about who they are, what they like & what they are passionate about. I hope my Ss know how important each & everyone is to me and that they are not just a number. We use Twitter in class and for parents I use email. #nyedchat
A4. As someone who loses joy sometimes himself, I try to remember why I always wanted to teach: to be for my Ss who I needed in my life when I was a student. It's not always easy, but the smallest positive response from a S brightens my whole day. #nyedchat#kidsdeserveit
Some days were overwhelming ... but the kids appreciated it ... one rule ... it was not a tutoring session ... no shop talk ... playing games ... watching videos ... laughing #NYEDChat
I would ask them what got them started teaching in the first place. Sometimes we lose sight of our passion because of all the roadblocks that get put up throughout the year. I would encourage them to start a PLN of Ts who are still passionate! #NYEDchat#KidsDeserveIt
Q4: What advice would you give to a teacher who's struggling with keeping their joy? How do you stay focused on the positive yourself? #NYEDChat#KidsDeserveIt
A4 my answer for T would be same as it would be for leader. Remember your why. Stand in honor of those that stood for you before. #nyedchat Stand even when others wish you'd sit.
A4- I would say look to the kids for the joy. Try to find time to be with them without any curricular stress. I think during certain times of the year, all of the other teaching duties can be taxing and lead us further away from the heart and soul of our days. #NYEDChat
A4: Here's the thing, you don't have to look for joy if you're around kids. Most kids can give you joy all day long. You just have to let them. Love us, encourage us, believe in us. Then joy will be right in front of you. Every single day. #NYEDChat#kidsdeserveit#KidsCanTeachUs
A4: I'd look to help the teacher build out an in-person and virtual PLN for support and surrounding themselves with positive people. From there, trust and let the positivity spread!
#NYEDChat#kidsdeserveit
I would tell them to never forget their "why". That's so important. As an administrator I need to connect with kids and teachers every single day. That is my "why". #NYEDChat
Q4: What advice would you give to a teacher who's struggling with keeping their joy? How do you stay focused on the positive yourself? #NYEDChat#KidsDeserveIt
A4 Find positive people, avoid negativity. Most of all talk to the students and really get to know them. A conversation with my Ss usually makes me forget the negative aspects of our job. #nyedchat
A4: We must always remember why we became Ts...for the kids. Must try to keep ourselves centered around that notion. I also suggest for Ts to get themselves out there and network. My #PLN energizes me and brings me joy each day. They make me laugh when I want to scream #NYEDChat
A3 Diversifying my reading with “For White Folks who teach in the hood & the rest of y’all too” really changed my mindset and gave perspective. #NYEDChat
A4: Focus on your Ss!! Intentionally take time to connect w/ them!! Laugh & have a little fun... they will bring joy back to your 💙! Also, find your tribe!! Lean on them for encouragement & positive energy!! #NYEDChat#KidsDeserveIt
A4) Ignore the negative. Burnout is serious so surround yourself w/people who run & keep your mindset positive. Also remember your their for the Ss. In the words of @hopekingteach “If the kids think your crazy your doing it right” #NYEdchat
A4 Shake things/try something new. This year I dressed up as a CDC scientist name Dr Jenner (complete with accent and glasses) and researched zombie-ism as epidemiologists. The kids all thought I had lost my mind!
#NYEDChat
A4 Positive thinking is a mindset. Reach out, compliment, and connect with others. Spread the joy yourself first and others will catch on. #kidsdeserveit#NYEDChat
A4 I feel like that is a great Q as the yr comes to an end and we are all in need of a break. Advice - focus on the positives, smile and try and pick out the amazing things that have happened over the semester /year. #nyedchat
A4: Something JOYLESS is when teachers make learning like a job. I'm in charge of my learning. I learn all the time. I want to share my passions. Maybe this is surprising to hear, but no one at my school cares about LivBits. #nyedchat#kidsDeserveIt#KidsCanTeachUs
A4-Bring your passion into your room and learn one new thing to try. It’s helped me. I’m not a great builder, but I love Makerspace in my classroom. I’ve also brought my shark obsession into my teaching and connected w/@Sharks4Kids#NYEDChat
#NYEDChat A4 - Teachers struggle when they look for success too high up and too far away. Too many burnout from worry8mg about things out of their control. Move your focus down and treasure the chaos. Success can be found in every smile and interaction.
A4- honestly Twitter keeps me uplifted! I come here for the positive supportive educators that are FIRED up about this profession. Find people to folllow that keep your spark alive! #NYEDChat
#kidsdeserveit#nyedchat A4: Terry 4th grade T joining in....overcome negativity by avoiding negative people and by always remembering WHY you're there. Remember that feeling you had when you were offered the position.
AH! My kids would love you!! When we started learning about calendars and I asked them why we use them, the first answer was "So we know when Shark Week is!!" #NYEDChat
A4- I always ask people to #reflect back to their interview. What would you have said then? How would you have acted then? That passion is still inside sometimes we just need to dig for it. #NYEDChat
A5 Outside education I stay grounded by spending time outside with @jhweinstein. Even if we talk about our work, we’re outside enjoying nature together. #nyedchat
A5. Grad school classes. They keep me ahead of the curve, reading, and experimenting with new ideas and platforms. And as the smartest person in the room is always the room, I need to surround myself with inspiring educators. #ET630#LoyolaET#nyedchat#kidsdeserveit
A4: I'm working on a blog post about what it feels like not to be a Ts favorite. I had to ask a lot of people if I could write it. Mostly b/c I think Ts won't want to read it. But @teachdebcraig said it's important i write it. So I will. #nyedchat#kidsdeserveit#KidsCanTeachUs
A5: Habit 7-Sharpen the Saw! I try to be the best version of myself I can be. I exercise regularly and try to enjoy life. Surround myself with good people that motivate me everyday #NYEDChat
I do a lot of yoga and body weight fitness to help unwind and stay active. I also like to write fiction and spend quality time with my family…we are big readers! #NYEDchat#KidsDeserveIt
A5: Want to start a new reading plan with my bible, want to keep blogging, writing, podcasting, youtubing. Also want to invest in the most important person in my life, @LBStrunk! Disney is only 20 days away!! #nyedchat
#NYEDChat A - Finding your tribe is so important so you are not isolated. Just blogged about that very topic today. https://t.co/7EbfH7uZHF. I even bought my own domain. I’m finding my voice.
A5-I finally got a nice 35mm digital camera. I’ve always been interested in photography and now am learning how to use it and filters. Even joined a Kansas Photography Facebook group. I’m having fun learning. #NYEDChat
#NYEDChat Read, manifest a new book (OK, I will have to put in some writing effort...), work on anxiety/depression take my son on college visits...sleep, breathe...(TMI?)
A5: I love spending time w/ my family & friends! I also enjoy traveling & photography! I’ve gotten back into running & am thankful for the balance it brings to my life! #KidsDeserveIt#RunLAP#NYEDChat
A5 Love 💕 to take long walks and enjoy nature and the seasons. Plant annuals in my garden and nurture them. Read books outside professional materials like The Gentleman in Moscow.
#Nyedchat#kidsdeserveit
A5 I'm with you, Laura. Virginia is a beautiful place for nature walks. We went to the Meadowlarks Botanical Garden last week (Vienna VA) with our little Sierra. #grandbabylove#Nyedchat#kidsdeserveit
A5 I play hockey, go fishing. My hockey team is raising money for cancer research with the @11DayPowerPlay. I've raised over $1k. Click below if you want to help. https://t.co/PoHugfYSlu#NYEDChat
A5: I try to get outside as much as possible for hunting, hiking, and family time. I surround myself with positive people and those that will keep me honest (as I will do for them).
#NYEDChat#kidsdeserveit
A5 I stay grounded by watching my kids grow & learn. Laughing a lot in the process. Not taking myself too seriously helps. When I can, I hit the kayaks, paddle board or hydrobike. I'm growing myself as a person by growing spiritually through my church. #NYEDChat#kidsdeserveit
A1: When I was in the classroom I taught math all 7 years. So as a principal this year, I taught a reading lesson in every grade level (K-5) and had teacher critique me so I could learn and grow as an educator #SparksInTheDark#NYEDchat#kidsdeserveit
A2: Speaking their language. When I surprise students and parents that I can speak to them in Spanish, there is a huge sigh of relief that they are understood. #NYEDChat#KidsDeserveIt
Reflection: I really want to start Twitter chats with my classes. Maybe a slow chat at first, more asynchronous, but then I want to open it up to get the ideas flying. Could be about books, school, or just topics they care about. #nyedchat#kidsdeserveit
#NYEDChat A5: College visits with my son. Manifest a new book (will have to make an effort writing it...). Read read read.
Encourage kids as best I can online and f2f!
I would love to put on a big stage production at our tiny school. I know the entire community would come to support it and that it would be life-changing for so many students. You could all get advance tickets- next June 2019 in Kazabazua, Quebec- book now! #NYEDChat
Reflection: I told some Orchestra students I would sit with them for a lesson. Have I ever picked up a string instrument? NOPE. I’ll do it for the kids #NYEDChat
Reflection: I am going to be working with 15 elementary schools this upcoming year and I want to push their thinking around innovation and improving teaching and learning for all Ss. #NYEDChat@CravenCoSchools
Reflection: I'm trying something big next year. I am in a new building and I have a vision of a huge makerspace that I want to go for. I plan on using what I've learned of fundraising, having wrap around services help and really push it. #NYEDChat
Reflection: Starting a new district and position next school year. I want to give my students the power to find their genius and implement #geniushour with them too. No matter the difficulties Ss face, all students can shine! #NYEDChat#kidsdeserveit
Reflection: I’m excited to intentionally focus on STEAM next year in my classroom!! I’m planning on incorporating morning tubs & class challenges to push my Ss to become thinkers, engineers, problem solvers, & risk takers!! #KidsDeserveIt#Nyedchat
Reflection, I am going to continue to push the limits and fight to see a change in education. I am applying to lead some workshops in the fall - hoping to put myself out there and be the change!! #nyedchat
#NYEDChat Reflection. I have decided to raise my voice online. It’s time. Updated my blog, added new content and starting a video series for school counselors. I don’t do neutral well. Going to see where it takes me. Anxious!
A4: Take a moment to recognize the wonderful things that they are doing for students. It’s hard to see to good that you do. Ask a colleague to help you recognize all of the positives. #nyedchat
Reflaction: I commit to expanding my reach in our school community. Nothing Earth shattering or innovative, just supporting my #oneword2018 of reach. I'll try to be strategic in the approach. #NYEDChat#kidsdeserveit
