I've never done an ed chat (I'm interning right now) but I'm excited to join you guys this evening!
Q1: What do you think are some of the key points that encompass a strong Classroom Management plan? https://t.co/piPBGYETN0
We're happy to be here and join in! New to this chat. :)
What kind of do you use in your classroom?
We have a lot of new timers tonight!!
A1: I think it is setting guidelines/rules at the beginning of the year and sticking with them
Definitely setting goals and expectations for the class from the very beginning. Establishing rapport.
A1: Consistency and trust. Ss should trust that the T says what she means and does what she says
And letting students voice their own expectations.
This is a good thought! Consistency is SO key. :) https://t.co/cvh8EIFVlq
A1: I think it is setting guidelines/rules at the beginning of the year and sticking with them
A1: Understanding ur expectation for the Ss. Plan out your procedures (different than rules!) & teach accordingly.
Not much-- My focus for my grad research is arts integration, but we stick to analog. Resources are limited.
A1: having high expectations is totally okay!
A1: include Ss in creating classroom rules and routines. Allow them ownership.
Would you use it if you had it? Are there projects / lessons u would do w/ tech?
Love this idea! Get them involved in setting standards for caring behavior. :) https://t.co/oAoc6JpRkz
A1: include Ss in creating classroom rules and routines. Allow them ownership.
yes! twitter is tough with 140 characters... but yes, yes, yes!
Yes. Have them take initiative and dig deep. https://t.co/eRcn69Khzv
And letting students voice their own expectations.
A1: remianing consistent with teacher's rules/procedures etc as a leave replacement T for a smooth transistion
Yes! If they are allowed to help in setting the guidelines, they will feel important and that their ideas matter.
A1:Know the Ss expectations of themselves & they know yours of them.Know that you can't truly "plan"a day & it goes exactly that way
Sorry, joining late! Amanda from Calgary, AB. Elem sub teacher for a few years just getting started in a new district!
Absolutely!! I'd love to use weeblys/cel.ly/museum box to have students create projects but it takes time 2 teach tech
Td my most struggling students made 100% on their factoring quiz. I was so proud I almost cried.
That is awesome! Go them and you!
A1 Routines are definitely key to success. Being consistent right from the beginning will give the students the structure they need.
Meanwhile, I had a student tell me 2day that I'm a glorified sub :(
A1: As I shared earlier...consistency is key in a CR management plan. Get kids involved. Let them be a part of the plan.
A2: B in line w/school wide behavior plans & ESLR's. Then match your style of relationship blding
A1: Make a set of classroom rules and stick to them. Only make exceptions when necessary
Super! Agree that setting some routines are essential. https://t.co/cAuahWFy7n
A1 Routines are definitely key to success. Being consistent right from the beginning will give the students the structure they need.
A1 Expectations posted so you can refer back and so there's consistency with subs and guests
A1: Consider using a Morning Meeting model to drive your CR managment. Let kids be involved in solving issues as they come up.
Having students be a part of the plan also builds a good classroom community. That is important as a starting point!
A1: I try to make sure discipline is done with intention- sticking kids in d-hall is not going to but them a pack of pencils.
Awesome suggestions all! Let's take a look at Q2. :)
Love this! Is there any particular structure you follow for your meeting?
Q2:How will/did you begin to develop your Classroom Management plan? With a mentor? Colleague? Please share! https://t.co/WqzvG7qqfx
I have some ideas from a blog post. I can share after the chat. Tweet me to remind me! lol
A2: Mentor as a primary source. Also took a Grad course on it. Was intro'ed to Harry/Rosemary Wong.
A2: As an intern that is still learning, it is hard when you are coming into the classroom starting with the second semester.
Thanks, that will be awesome! I'll try my best to remember :)
A2: If I am honest, it was trial and error. But have since been working with my mentor and other teachers to adjust
Good! This is a great start. Get a mentor involved to support you. https://t.co/QMyHJ52QiJ
A2: Mentor as a primary source. Also took a Grad course on it. Was intro'ed to Harry/Rosemary Wong.
A2: especially when you don't agree with everything that your mentor has different opinions than you do on CM
Develop your classroom management plans by reading and listening to and .
A2 I've have a CRM class before. I'll intern in the fall and ST w/ in the same CR in winter. I hope to start building at that point
A2: My mentor is a big fan of giving students choices and ways to leave the situation w/ dignity. I love that.
Q2: Definitely plan to utilize profs advice and student teaching experience. Observing what does and doesn't work
totally true! And it was hard because different things work for different groups of students
Great! This is key. As a new T you need to have some examples to build from. Then you can craft it based on you. :)
No matter how big your school is, there's always more smart people on the outside, than on the inside, of your school.
A2 I find a mentor in the school with similar teaching style and ask for suggestions... they can help answer q's that come up
A2: know what you want/don't want, model behavior for Ss, don't do/say anything you aren't willing to follow up. Watch a master T
A2: what do we do when admin judges teaching based on # of behavior referrals/marks. we have to electroni. record issues
A2: Building CR management plan with a mentor can support you to avoid some pitfalls. You need a sounding board to bounce ideas!
A2: Tribes Curric/framework gave me great structure and rules to start with. Gave class common vocabulary.
So true!! https://t.co/z7Ma5aXVMz
A2: know what you want/don't want, model behavior for Ss, don't do/say anything you aren't willing to follow up. Watch a master T
A2: I've learned(from other student teachers) that your mentors are more than happy to help you if you just ask :)
A2: I developed an initial CM plan in a class prior to internship. It was super helpful to have a foundation to build off of &adjust
That was stressed in the CRM class I took! Yes! It all goes back to consistency. I like this.
Are you a Warm Demander
patience
persistence
validation
empowerment
care
high expectations
smile
greet
unconditional positive regard
Yes! And explain to Ss why any adjustments are happening.. changes can be stressful but sometimes needed
I love that! Such a great idea. https://t.co/5L9HF6dOmT
A2: I developed an initial CM plan in a class prior to internship. It was super helpful to have a foundation to build off of &adjust
A2: I had a mentor/coach to assist me
my JHS uses tribing! luv that it keeps Ss in classes w/ same group of 150 kids all day.
Yes! They just want to know why you are doing the things you are doing! Be honest with them, especially the older they are
A2 IMHO c
lassroom management is best created by watching video of oneself and analyzing what is & is not working, then seeking help
A2 Also, survey your Ss and see what they need, want out of the classroom environment!
Join in 30 minutes as we discuss best instructional practices for Ss growth
A2: visit other classrooms during your internship, talk with Ts on different gr levels. When you see something you like write it.
Yes! I love discussing adjustments with students. Helps them learn that standards should have a purpose & matter!
Thats a heavy undertaking that most new T's wont be able to handle. But great if you can do it!
A2 cont. the biggest thing I have learned: NO what consequences will be for breaking contract
Oh Yes! You have to have this in place and stick to it! https://t.co/ADhxGdhuoN
A2 cont. the biggest thing I have learned: NO what consequences will be for breaking contract
Video taping oneself and asking Ss for input are just steps to realize you are a learner in the classroom too! Model learning for Ss
Great to see so many good reflections for this CR management piece. Q3 is coming up!
Sorry to join on late! Sarah, MAT student in AR. Will try to play catch up :)
Q3:Share a fave strategy you’re using w/students to build community & support positive behavior in your CR? https://t.co/6fVr6vRC0P
be sure that it's been gone over with the Ss as well.
No worries. All are welcome. We are on Q3!
Classroom management has a lot more to do with class than with management.
Hi guys! Late to the party, but I'm here!! HS English teacher from Chicagoland
A3: I've let students shout one another out based on who they see is representing our school values. And I do student of the week
sorry joining late and for the first time. Teacher coach from DC
A3: Kagen structures that force students to talk to all peers!!!!
Welcome and thanks for stopping by! We are on Q3!
A3: For my action research, I facilitated Socratic circles in the CR and they love it! They learn a lot about each other
A3: Big fan of Think, Pair, Share!
A3 : Campfire chats and are both techniques to build class culture
A2: We were required to develop classroom mgmt scenarios and compare to current teachers' responses. V helpful activity for us
Q3: I love student led shout outs where they shout each other out for showing our schools' values.
A3: I use stoplight of learning, read with me, peer discussion and interviews
A3: Today I did Inside Outside circle to discuss/review key elements of Romeo and Juliet. so cool to hear and see Ss interacion
A3 I love Ross Greene's collaborative problem solving... great for 1-1 and whole class (check out Lost at School)
Looking forward to reading the archives! Have to head out a bit early! Will hopefully catch the next full chat.
No I haven't! I will look into it! Thank you for sharing!
These sound so good! Have you blogged about them? Would love to see them. :) https://t.co/HerUxlPhnt
A3: I use stoplight of learning, read with me, peer discussion and interviews
Never heard of this, but love the idea of a SMACKDOWN!
A3 1st day activity of listing info on notecards, but instead of turning in to me, students must connect to other students' hobbies
We are back in 2 weeks! April 20. See you then.
Classroom meetings! They should happen every day. Ss greet each other, share success, discuss problems, etc. https://t.co/uEwIbDfta6
Q3:Share a fave strategy you’re using w/students to build community & support positive behavior in your CR? https://t.co/6fVr6vRC0P
A3 Since I'm not in an El CR rn, these are all very interesting community builders. I'm really happy to get to be a part of this.
A3: we also do whole class discussions- students are respectful and take the disagreements outside of classroom
Love that you called them community builders. This is what CR management should ultimately be. https://t.co/ljP7iMoMMz
A3 Since I'm not in an El CR rn, these are all very interesting community builders. I'm really happy to get to be a part of this.
A3: Connecting students to one another is crucial to community building
A3: Affirm good discussion behavior- Praise students for saying "I respectfully disagree because"
I think I am seeing that students need to learn how to disagree in a respectful meaner. Attack the idea NOT the person
A3: My students have benefited from self-assessing routinely after discussions. Helps them notice their own growth & improvements
Teaches them to be good citizens and keeps relationships from breaking b/c of academic disagreement.
Uuuuu...this is a good one! Thanks for sharing it! https://t.co/AtqLZyp2P3
A3: Affirm good discussion behavior- Praise students for saying "I respectfully disagree because"
Disagreement isn't necessarily bad... but maybe teaching explicitly how to disagree respectfully?
A3: reinforce positive behavior, model it with colleagues. Positive attitude promotes a positive classroom
Yes...that is IMPORTANT! https://t.co/QcgkJatwhX
Disagreement isn't necessarily bad... but maybe teaching explicitly how to disagree respectfully?
A3 I'm a tutor for a Fam Lit Prog, working with adult learners. I could def see how some of these idea could work with them as well.
Awesome sharing all. Some great ideas I have not heard of before. Let's jump to Q4!
"I respectfully disagree" is one of my favorite phrases in the world
misunderstanding! I just meant that they continue the discussions outside of class!
Q4:What Web 2.0 tools have you found helpful to support your work with a CR management plan? Please share! https://t.co/eiUMXAMHp0
Yes! We must take these "attacks" on others as teaching opportunities. Real life communication skills!
A3: let Ss hear you say "I'm sorry"
A3: Ss used to groan when I had a new assignment to handout...now, everyone there's a new handout, they CHEER instead!!
Yes! Talk moves are great for young Ss.. sent. structures of how to add on, disagree, ask for clarification...
A4: Tried to use weebly, but students got so frustrated!! took more time teaching the process than the content
Oh that's awesome! Evidence of a great lesson :) Thanks for the clarification!
Hmmm...thats an interesting reflection. How were you using it for CR managment?
A4: I have tried Google discussion so they could discuss books they were reading. It was a bust. I am open to new ideas!
A4: Classroom Dojo customizes targets both pos & neg. parents linked. Can use with phone.
A4: Google Classroom all the way!! I know who has assignments turned in before class and can address those Ss as they enter
Model positive actions for getting along with others like admitting mistakes, take responsibility
A4: Yeah I guess mine wasn't for CM. I need ideas!
A4: I have a prof who uses and i can't wait to try it as a NT
Wow...really? Not familiar with that one. Let me ask my bestie . Maybe she can help. :) https://t.co/OMVnu7Fm9X
A4: I have tried Google discussion so they could discuss books they were reading. It was a bust. I am open to new ideas!
A4: As a student, I have loved using Google Classroom and am hoping to incorporate it when I have a class
A4: has been a really effective CM tool. Provides a way to acknowledge good and bad behavior without disrupting class
Yay! I'm glad to hear that! Have you seen book? Its amazing! https://t.co/boeX3FVRQR
A4: As a student, I have loved using Google Classroom and am hoping to incorporate it when I have a class
Dabbs-- Ss were expected to take account. for their group members contr. to the work by posting comments a/b group dynamics
A4 I haven't found any I like yet... so much out there focuses on rewards, not part of my plan. But I'm open to ideas!
A4: classroom dojo, Kahoot, and Quizlet are AWESOME
Excellent quote for ! https://t.co/QceMQhVNsN
Q5: Realize that teaching involves layers of skills - it takes time & patience to master them. Reflect daily & breathe!
I love ! So much fun and easy to use.
I have the same issue with some of the apps out there. I'm not sure how adapt reward-based one to secondary classes
Began a Periscope channel for our students. Now we move through material quickly (csrm mgmt 101!) and Ss can watch Periscope later
A4: I need to read about - Never heard of it
A4: As a student we used Kahoot , but I think as a future educator I will use socrative instead.
Isn't Kahoot an app used for quizzes? How can it be used for CM
Q5:As a new teacher ...how will you ensure your parents are on board with your Classroom Management plan? https://t.co/IUT1J1WC8A
This program has worked really well with my 8th graders.Would be interested to evaluate effectiveness with older students
A5: SEND HOME THE EXPECTATIONS!! Make yourself available for questions/conferencing- make consequences explicit
A5: Communication is key!
Amen! This is a must that many New T's forget!! https://t.co/ab7jvjp8gg
A5: SEND HOME THE EXPECTATIONS!! Make yourself available for questions/conferencing- make consequences explicit
Tricky! I tend to avoid anything focusing on external rather than internal rewards- doesn't teach life skills!
A5 Constant communication even if it isn't reciprocated. Some parents may not have time to meet but still appreciate communication
A5: Yes communication! Sending out your norms to the parents is a must! Email them with problems or concerns immediately.
A5: I get frustrated that parents are so quick to question teacher over student. I understand the reasoning, but...
A5 Just as Ss should know from day 1, parents should know your expectations for the class as well.
A5 Make it transparent by having it posted to your webpage, and make sure there is constant and quick communication (+ &-) as needed
If you haven't tried give it some thought. Can be a great way to communicate with Parents!
A5: Communication is very important for new teachers. Ps are getting to know you and trust you have a game plan for their child
It's important to keep files of all communication. A table is built into my CMP to record communication/response needed
A5: What a/b parents who are ESL/non-native speakers? How can we express all of this to them?
A5 Have Ss write expectations out in own words to discuss at home... if they helped create them, they're your best advocates
A5: communication, communication. Invite parents in, create a class blog, Twitter
A5 Being open and having a dialogue, either verbal or otherwise, will keep the lines of communication open.
Q5: I go through my classroom management plan with my parents during meet the teacher night
Do you have a language teacher on campus willing to translate docs or act as interpreter?
A5: send them home, ask Parents to sign also and have open communication
do they really like it or do they find it babyish? I teach m.s. too but only elementary use it here
A5: Also why it is so important to be consistent- Parents will be quick to note inconsistencies
A5 Hopefully, being open will show parents that your intentions are CRM-wise is set up to have all who are involved to succeed.
Great! My mentor put hours on her website for contact... some parents take 'constant contact' a bit too literally
A5: Taking the extra time to recognize students personally when communicating- lets them know you are invested in their child.
Agreed! Mistake New T's do is reach out only when there is a problem with a student. https://t.co/8HaSyuFTjn
A5: Communication is very important for new teachers. Ps are getting to know you and trust you have a game plan for their child
A5:CM plan should include when you will speak to families about behavior & follow up if you don't hear from them - follow up is key
A little late to the party but absolutely love this 3 years of teaching & I still feel like my classroom management could be better
A5: share plan at back to school night. Ask for feedback. Parents are your partners
Yes...don't wait too long. Get to the business of seeking resolution quickly. Don't let it fester. https://t.co/WDNmBgErk4
A5:CM plan should include when you will speak to families about behavior & follow up if you don't hear from them - follow up is key
Or can an older sibling or the student translate? Have a 1-1 meeting including them
A5: I want to give my students a syllabus with the units we will go over and the test dates like my college professors did for us
That's great! Always growing and learning is the key. :) https://t.co/FTw5wSJrve
A little late to the party but absolutely love this 3 years of teaching & I still feel like my classroom management could be better
I always get very concerned a/b if consequences @ home will be drastic or severe and tend to under-communicate 4 that reason
A5: when I was a new T (30) my Ss helped me to create a behavior contract signed by parents, Ss/T. That collaboration was the best
