Hi ! Ready to learn. Just coming to grips with 21st C Learning
Same here! Welcome as always, make we just skip 100 years?
Looking forward to *trying* to participate in this between putting LO to bed and dinner!
Welcome, quality over quantity!
very scary. Wht would it be like!
Hi everybody! I'm Michael.I moved here from Canada and they think I'm slow eh?
Hey all! James here. Year 11 student from in Auckland, NZ! Ready to bring to tonight.
Kia ora digital Ts, from Wellington Back into it today!
LOL. Michael, you're a visionary my friend!
Good Morning from Baltimore/Washington DC- USA
Keep the energy going for one more hour!
Hey team! running a bit late today! Great to be hereππ½
Good morning Sir, What time you got?
You've done well, we all have first day back! LOL
Hi! Marco from Sydney here. 22nd C learning: beam the knowledge straight into Ss brains. Then wait for SkyNet to take over!
A1: Self directed learning
A2: Skills. What sort of skills will they have and need?
haha I survived!! Nah it was an awesome day! Great to get back into it!
Wow! Thanks for the input. Much appreciated.
Great start Marco and welcome as always Sir!
Love the optimism of this one and welcome Jess!
Great to be here, Stuart! Always a pleasure!
A1 Jetpacks. Though more appropriate: choice (or self-directed)
A1 solutions and creativity
Welcome Sir and where did you get that pic of my classroom? A1
Welcome Sir and where did you get that pic of my classroom? A1
Yes, James! all the way or collaboration is just a poster word
A1: In-time-learning (22nd Century Learning). If I use a dash will it count as one word?
Nice Angela. Creativity has to be there to move our country forward doesn't it? A1
A1: disruptive innovation
LOL. A1 Of course, love it!
Oooh love these answers! For me, risk-taking
it counts haha! I used a dash too! ππππ½ππ½
From the students AND the teachers I hope! A1
A1: I also refer back to this quote: βThe top ten in-demand jobs in 2010 . . . did not exist in 2004."
I imagine schools may not exist 100 years from now. At least not in their current form... Well 83.5 years,
Nice Fiona and welcome. Fearless!
. from the whole school community
Nice point and this has to include the parents! A1
A1: No organised school required.
There will be no organisations to work for. π
LOL. Brilliant....what about the teachers?
We can't ask Ss to be risk-takers if we just sit back and do the opposite
A1:machine learning -perhaps we will need to reconcile with data analysis vs human creativity . https://t.co/eHtqDKI5Q6
agreed! who knows what tech will bring!
absolutely - space to move it into a solution too
A1: Feeling like another tweet! Another good word would have to be relevance!
Great post, I don't think machine learning is fully understood yet, huge potential! A1
Great post, I don't think machine learning is fully understood yet, huge potential! A1
Agreed, though perhaps a bit sad those words aren't necessarily representing 21st C learning
. Literally remove the walls!
He's too far into the future to be caught!
creating videos from home, Skyping, connecting via Google apps
that would be my A2 no longer having a 'classroom' but a space to collaborate, resource, create
A2: I don't think there would be a physical classroom anymore because there is learning all around us
Nice Matalaoa, wouldn't this be a challenge to many teachers now? A1
That is a very profound statement how do we get ts to be risktaskers https://t.co/GohfvARkyU
We can't ask Ss to be risk-takers if we just sit back and do the opposite
I imagine our jobs will be different - more like advisors, guides
Would students physcially attend school?
Walk the talk as per 's blog
some might. some might not. Will probably depend on Ss
So for a few visionary Ts no change, for many a huge change!
A1 May I please use two key words? (There's always one, isn't there?!) SOFT SKILLS - 4Cs
How does social education occur then?
How does social education occur then?
yes I think it would be a huge challenge to some teachers. They put to many barriers up and make it hard
Education Consultants! Charge by the bit of info LOL!
A2 Any learning space I see in the 22nd C would be utopia as I would be alive. Probably resemble more high tech library
Yes you can! LOL. A2 Great post and welcome!
Jumping in late - in between cooking dinner!
A2: flexibility, standing tables, whiteboards on the walls for thinking, equality, quiet spaces # and collaborative spaces
Nice Joanna, welcome as always!
Students could attend various places to learn and do different things with different groups?
Are there risks with this absence?
I want this learning space now! Sense of freedom!
Are there risks with forcing Chd to go to a place they don't like?
LOL. Hopefully Pokemon Go is not in the 22nd century learning spaces.
A2- A classroom without walls- digitally enabled to allow for personalised lng But with a green screen wall.
Nailed it Michael, sounds like school for many in 2016.
Hi all. Matt from Perth, jumping in late. I'll try and catch up!
Not my class. I love my little enclave!
'play-dates'! Get together to discuss learning over a cup of coffee or a fluffy
is now trending in New Zealand, ranking 33
A2 My utopic learning space would not be called 'school.' It would be a spot for people 2 visit in order to create and invent
A2 Equal opportunities for everyone!
A2 For me, utopic would be having such good digital access/resources, it's nothing special. &space lots of spaces and global!
Great point, we should be there by 22nd C I hope! A2
That's an even better question; what would your STUDENTS UTOPIC learning space look like?
would love this now, stop making tech a big deal should just be there like a pen/pencil/book
Yes! organised by themselves. Leaders and team players will shine!
don't we all?! We all deserve it at the very least!
I do and always will https://t.co/GohfvARkyU
We can't ask Ss to be risk-takers if we just sit back and do the opposite
A2: Imagine a self cleaning kitchen where food orders were automated and I could just teach and learn. No setup required!
Hopefully by the 22nd C schools will be designed with that in mind
We can't ask Ss to be risk takers if we don't allow them to take risks either https://t.co/iPdGYskHlI
We can't ask Ss to be risk-takers if we just sit back and do the opposite
Nice, I like the concept of pop-up groups, would this work ?
Hello project based learning!
Sounds like school today!
Your right my problem is I always think what I can do to make their space fun and engaging https://t.co/10BJCPFe2I
That's an even better question; what would your STUDENTS UTOPIC learning space look like?
Absolutely, our students should not succeed for lack of resources.
Absolutely, our students should not succeed for lack of resources.
A3 Because what we want for the 22nd C should be what we're trying to create NOW. Any step forward is progress.
A3: Benefit is to start setting up the framework for the future... While unknown, steps can be made now!
that's sadly how Australian education funding is fundamentally functioning right now!
A3: imagine we create the future as we want it to be. Choose our own future?!
A3 developing curiosity, fostering creativity & ability to take risks
We're getting there. This year, the devices are less cool for our Ss, same with Wi-Fi access!
Agree! https://t.co/TLmcFDxq3e
would love this now, stop making tech a big deal should just be there like a pen/pencil/book
Same here, our government need to resourcesschools so we can all walk the talk!
or if they actually lose something b/c they took a risk and failed. I'm celebrating failures in class now
Welcome JoAn, jump on in!
Welcome JoAn, jump on in!
A3: plan the seed - prepare teachers - build teacher capacity - slowly shift mindset
I think for students who are capable of self monitoring and motivation.
I'd get me a flying car ASAP.
That's a great idea of course superb https://t.co/ULDeQHfm1b
Students could attend various places to learn and do different things with different groups?
Great share Trav and welcome! A3
A3: By thinking so far ahead we are able to dream. When we dream, we strive to succeed
Then 22nd C needs to prioritise competencies and skills then?
There is no fate but what we make for ourselves...
A brilliant quote! https://t.co/sMGNiDCMxi
A3: By thinking so far ahead we are able to dream. When we dream, we strive to succeed
Nice Michael, so true and powerful!
Great question! https://t.co/UaXyC3ZwcT
That's an even better question; what would your STUDENTS UTOPIC learning space look like?
Already happening; in our 3rd week of PBL. Had to reteach Ss how to learn. Now, off and running. So exciting
Great point! All of oru Year 9s are doing TPS in 2017, thinking and problem solving!
Yes and inquiry learning skills (group or individual)
It's a quote from a famous person, John Connor, could be attributed to Kyle Reese
This comes to agency and confidence in ourselves to be the change doesn't it? A3
Thanks Stuart! Great to be part of this again for a bit. Always pearls of wisdom here with you :)
Standing tables are my dream https://t.co/XXiAHEChg4
A2: flexibility, standing tables, whiteboards on the walls for thinking, equality, quiet spaces # and collaborative spaces
We've found that starting Ss have had to spend 2 weeks relearning how to learn. Reap rewards.
It's rarely me LOL. It's the awesome PLN. They rock!
It's rarely me LOL. It's the awesome PLN. They rock!
many ppl expect to wake up tomorrow to a better world, but they miss the part where we actually change it
Fascinating, I think that many Ts jump in and wonder why the students flounder.
Yeah, I think we need2 build the growth mindset first tech later-at least in tandem or adaptability will falter
on fire tonight! Or they wait for someone to make the change and keep missing their own opportunities.
yep. But also allowing our Ts and leaders to dream. Imagine that we have not imagined. Then permission to go.
A3 For me, it means we're not bound by present day barriers-real or perceived!
We are dealing w the last gasps of tchng as industrial model. We were products of it
Slow to start, bu when there is momentum, change will happen fast re Growth Mindset. Need to instill young
Very cool Matt. Many Ts would struggle to imagine initially, would need support!
It's worth the time. We feel pressured to get projects going, but not at the expense of soft skills.
Nice Fiona! We need to be prepared to let go of the now and the past!
Nice Fiona! We need to be prepared to let go of the now and the past!
To use another quote (which I couldn't find online when I was searching): Can't someone else do it?
I missed the last question but I'm just loving reading all the posts!
Otherwise the PBL has little chance of success IMO.
A3: By thinking down the track we are able to create a path for where WE want to go and discover HOW we want to get there
I may have been lucky to have been treated slightly differently...
Magic post Jason and welcome my friend!
-ed tech is great but students also need to develop social interaction https://t.co/2EFgWG0Hkj
A2: I don't think there would be a physical classroom anymore because there is learning all around us
Interesting, care to elaborate?
Interesting, care to elaborate?
I think a lot of great Ts suit the 'industrial revolution' style of teaching, but change is hard
Thats what were doing right now on twitter https://t.co/P43HrElT4D
A3: imagine we create the future as we want it to be. Choose our own future?!
inquiry into inquiry. Learning about how we are doing in the process.
Many will just leave but that's ok IMO and maybe necessary!
Many will just leave but that's ok IMO and maybe necessary!
Was put into gifted class for grades 4-8. Teachers gave us more control over our learning
True. But it starts with changing one person. One mind. One idea. https://t.co/QRu7FR29Ki
I think a lot of great Ts suit the 'industrial revolution' style of teaching, but change is hard
A4: The main danger is creating visions and using limited resources for something that may never eventuate or fail.
A4 Computers will fit in one room... oops... wrong century
A4 We could lose sight of the present, get caught up in a fantasy world, miss the trees for the forest
That's pretty cool. If only all students has your "control".
Sorry I'm late internet issues - forget where I live sometimes
A4: We might end up focusing only on getting to the destination not enjoying and chershing the journey you take in education
That's so wonderful... wish that was available to every S
Better late than never! Welcome as always, great to have you on deck. You're in time for the 22nd C!
Yes but we are still bound by those barriers how do we break them https://t.co/k7H8R8Lj1T
A3 For me, it means we're not bound by present day barriers-real or perceived!
this year I have side projects 1. growth mindset; 2. Inquiry skills
this is truly utopian! Im not sure about 11-15 yr olds!!! https://t.co/MOv5JPOx1z
I think for students who are capable of self monitoring and motivation.
Permission to gobble and type Sir!
so too. Don't want to put all our eggs in one basket. See it time and time again!
A4- I just can't buy into this 'future-ed' theme. If it's not happening for me and my Ss now I don't see the point.
The only way is for heads of schools and team to move forward and think and act as one IMO.
A4: Frustration with the status quo. Frustration with the slow or no adopters. Frustration with the system that limits change
A4 Whilst forward thinking is important - being present, here & now is also vital for our students https://t.co/P6yuV5Qngx
A4 We could lose sight of the present, get caught up in a fantasy world, miss the trees for the forest
It can be, All it takes is for teachers to give it to them.
Nice. I'd argue both highly complementary.
A4 danger of not spending time implementing the plan to get to the future
A4: I think there is nothing wrong to think so far ahead I think in education we are always reactive rather than proactive
Many Ts don't want to or are too scared to give up their central and perception of control IMO.
so much frustration = so much potential!
And both so relevant to their current AND future lives!
it is! There will be more need of the human contact with the increase of tech tools
Yes fixed mindset on 'ability' of Ss is so dangerous
I love my students but they need to have growth mindsets and linked confidence!
A4: Crystal Ball gazing is not acceptable to accurately predict the future.
Alright gotta go because I'm falling asleep at the desk! Thanks all for a great tonight, keep up those inspiring tweets!
A4:possible that it's not in the strategic plan for the school this is where it makes strategies a priority
Often due to pressure in learning spaces and from risk-averse traditional teachers.
Our generation saw LP to mp3 to it is really ambitious to forsee the role of tech in the 22c https://t.co/hdt7SGajdc
many Ts haven't seen it successful needs to be modelled with all the tough bits
Just onboard, having had a Hall Committee AGM. Average age of the member 96.
Wishful thinking https://t.co/xTRqsCcj3u
The only way is for heads of schools and team to move forward and think and act as one IMO.
Great stuff Myles, but this team will no doubt be proved correct! LOL
Yes but can be done through
A2: could be making assumptions, but thinking of it helps preparation
Great post! IMO things are only going to accelerate. we need to be proactive .
looked for the clip from Jurassic Park where they talk about control as an illusion... couldn't find it
Just think of the thinking in the time of the LP, someone would have seen MP3 etc!
true editing, failing fast so important in ed to ensure you're learners get the best
welcome as always. Awesome contributions already!
welcome as always. Awesome contributions already!
Hello, joining the second half of
and many Ts are bullied into following what managers tell them to... not uncommon in NZ
Better to be in front than left behind, better to be active than reactive!
But we have2 commit& expect failures. I've had plenty. Mistakes help Ts grow
Wow, we are thinking super far into the future here people!! I can't predict what things will look like in 5 years!
Great point. Thankfully there's a trend to have educators back running schools.
A4 I wonder if the real Q is what are the dangers of not being able to Foresee the future - pitfalls and opportunities
Thanks Matt. I really needed to hear that tonight, facing the thought of helping all maths teachers! https://t.co/jSatSal4iH
True. But it starts with changing one person. One mind. One idea. https://t.co/QRu7FR29Ki
I think a lot of great Ts suit the 'industrial revolution' style of teaching, but change is hard
That's the point Joel, nobody can say you're wrong!
That's the point Joel, nobody can say you're wrong!
Yes and this keeps us closer to the future IMO.
Yes and this keeps us closer to the future IMO.
A5: Some sort of brain scanner that imprints the knowledge straight in
A pic of a tiny bud growing through concrete comes to mind
Exactly. Too much pressures for BTs (and other Ts) to be perfect (whatever that is)
Yes but trees can crack concrete once fully grown!
22nd century, We'll all be neurally linked to the web and each other. All knowledge will just "be there in your head".
Hahaha. Yeah, I should photoshop my face on the bud and make it my logo ;)
A5: Mind reader to know how ss are thinking not what they ....
Imagine if staff were told to be dreamers & perfect failures...the success would be huge!
I'm perennially present. What we plant today will grow in time, true.
is that perception or reality? How much is miscommunication?
My dinner has been prepared for me, I might have to roll, he might get grumpy if I let it go cold. Great chat Stu!
A5 had some amazing this to share when I heard him speak... contact lens screens are pretty cool
In many cases, it's managers who have been isolated from classroom advancements.
the vision inspiring insomnia!
can you imagine the field trips?!
bit of both in my experience
Love this! Nice work Jenny. My deepest apologies.
Q4 thinking ahead = vision my ? is can schools keep up with tech that is available R Ts ready for what S bring with them
Love this! Nice work Jenny. My deepest apologies.
I know, I'm casing a wall at the mo, mwa-ah-ah
there is another permission form we'll need to get signed and returned at the start of the year!
Look at the VR and AR that's becoming commonplace already.
I want a device that adapts to any learners needs in real time so everyone is on the same page https://t.co/wzjYxkHq3L
Some schools are becoming more and more favoured as great learning places.
definitely it can be miscommunication, but not always, sometimes it's on purpose
I want 1 that takes the blog posts I write in my head & translates my thoughts into my blog esp the ones I write mid of nite
LOL! ...and the risk assessment form!
That would be cool. Immediately and individually adaptive software/tools!
That would be cool. Immediately and individually adaptive software/tools!
We are already cyborgs in the true sense of the word. It's only changing things by degrees now.
You know, digital coms are really challenging boundaries already.
that would be awesome :) esp the 3am ones :)
Q5 what comes tomorrow needs to grow out of S learning today
Great point. When I ask my students re the future of learning, they easily think beyond most teachers!
Come on Joel give it a go you must see some amazing things https://t.co/SAtQYbXVFU
Wow, we are thinking super far into the future here people!! I can't predict what things will look like in 5 years!
there are amazing schools out there that are leading the way :)
Wait till both of those are on contact lenses (or directly to our brain a la Strange Days)
Joel's halfway there with his awesome videos!
Joel's halfway there with his awesome videos!
Also affordable tech so school budgets R not restricting T & L opportunities
and Ts unwilling to explore the unknown perhaps...
Thats my utopia https://t.co/wbWgAkXMGf
Imagine if staff were told to be dreamers & perfect failures...the success would be huge!
Nice, I thought Google Glass was thinking this way! ?
A5: Something that assesses all my work and gives better feedback than I can. Enables me to adjust what I do in real time.
I'm getting there with my digital team, takes a lot of support and trust but can be done!
time workload and budget makes it tricky to stay ontop
You will be able to do all your shopping by blinking ;D
AS: Imagine learning in the same way ppl are playing - take the necessary steps for safety, of course
Im really liking you sustainable motifs https://t.co/VWFU5hk0AJ
I'm perennially present. What we plant today will grow in time, true.
A5 A really souped up Google Forms!
A5 A really souped up Google Forms!
Some devices to help blind people. Converting visual to haptic, audio would help many sighted also. https://t.co/cNJzMXohho
A3. We may have a world to live in in 200 years.
Honestly, education as we know it will be completely redundant. We won't know where human ends & robot starts.
better to be inspired insomnia rather than the stresses kind!
Great idea, I'll ask them tomorrow and see what they come up with!
That would be incredibly amazing. Honestly, why the eff not?
S also discuss the fact that so many don't have electricity never mind tech make what we have count
can work both ways unfortunately
make sure you don't blink too much!
Midnight blogs that don't get written are so much more profound.
Despite digital we still need to remember what matters
We are already there aren't we? Didn't I see a thing ages ago about blind people "seeing" with their tongues?
oh yes indeed - I dream of such a device but no idea how to turn fiction into reality
A4. Forcing the process of adaption.
Two words IMO- "Summative Assessment" in the traditional form!
A5: Much as I would love to see innovate ways 4 lrning, mant sts still don't have acess 2 basic tech in the classroom -
The idea's the hardest part ladies!
Yes, This is true, but I've heard & seen enough to know this is an issue that probably needs 2b addressed worldwide
Sorry I couldn't participate 2night great topic I'll read over the chat
Great point Stephan, the equity issue is non-negotiable!
A6: The teacher will be a facilitator of knowledge... someone to lead Ss... a noticer of trends to help the Ss
A6. 3D printing as it opens so many doors in so many areas of the world!
I wrote 4 the other night that became ghosts by am
PokemonGo for educational purposes!
A6: I imagine it will be more about helping Ss discover what they need to know and where to go to find out. Kind of like now!
very true we need to keep working on closing that divide
Yeah, I read about this, all it takes is the idea and belief!
Alanis would say that's ironic, but perhaps that's not the correct word in this case
TT NEW ZEALAND 21:52
1.Florida
2.
3.
4.
5.South Island
6.
7.Steve Hansen
8.
9.Ariana
Love your thinking, some of our staff are on it!
A6: facilitate and provide opportunities for students to engage with, they will need to be flexible and not afraid of change
Nice point. I can enjoy the now when I know I'm also thinking of the future!
A6 grounding - making things real, posing the hard questions
Would it? What if we based practice on wht research says works: collaborative PL
it would be solved if we all remembered y we're here & left ego at door! It's about our Ss not power agendas
A6 The line between teacher and student will be blurred if not completely gone. One and the same
And then what pre chew it for you https://t.co/tyxOMgqyyr
that can sample my food and give feedback based on taste. Yep.
we start back in 2.5 weeks but will def ask and let you know
Nice Fiona and very key in terms of staying relevant!
Nice Fiona and very key in terms of staying relevant!
A6: community manager... Facilitator
DT levers us into many dimensions -ako is real!
Maybe slightly on the way there. Not available, unlikely to work for congenitally blind.
yep, that is a concern - most include encompassing -
Exactly! Agreed. Sometimes I'm baffled at the reasons why people do things to others - obvsly not thinking about Ss
we have children in our school who came from there. They are inspiring our vision
I agree, It will the next social divide if we're not careful.
A6, your AI tutor will provide guidance, reading your brainwaves to figure out what would be optimally learned next.
Nice it also enables ako anywhere, anyone, anytime!
A5:small rockets that travel into space that allow Ss to look back on earth and realise how small but important they are
No worries, some things (not many) are more important than LOL.
No worries, some things (not many) are more important than LOL.
this would be my 3yos dream :) rocket power :)
I think the T role of facilitator, guide & supporter will continue, building the notion of team with a positive mindset
Great post Nic, really like this!
A6. To stir up discontent here, I honestly assume robots will completely take over our jobs soon enough.
one of my Ts had Ss hunting Pokemon for math today collaborating in real context
education as an ecosystem and technology as the carrier and connection
to see the origin of earth, galaxy
That;s 22nd C learning in 2016!
So will the names be changed as well - from teacher and student to simply "collaborative learners"?
Thanks for the chat tonight - have to get organised for ! Me you there?
Thats okay as long as its as annoying as me https://t.co/0S9FNr7msA
A6. To stir up discontent here, I honestly assume robots will completely take over our jobs soon enough.
Great idea, digital v physical should be about fit-for-purpose!
That's a good one. I toyed with calling myself Senior Learner and my students Junior Learners. May still do it
A6: robot handlers. Gotta be easier than wrangling students?!
Great stuff education of and in and for the community!
Thanks for a great chat as always !
I agree, NCEA for example favours individual work sadly!
great idea seeing teachers as learners so important Sts could be senior learners sometimes too
Thanks for your awesome contributions!
I do what I can with the limited resources at my disposal
