#MasteryChat is a weekly chat with a growing family of educators from around the word focused on teaching better and reaching more students. Topics cover an array of challenges and solutions for teachers of all grade levels and subject areas, admins, and support staff.
#MasteryChat occurs every Thursday at 8:00pm eastern.
The chat was created by team at @thegridmethod, but is hosted by guest moderators each week. Our primary moderators are @techieteachott, @raehugart, and @jeffgargas.

A1. To me, the Maker Movement means a shift back to constructivist education. Ss construct their knowledge through experiences and active learning opportunities. A truly empowering movement full of relevant and authentic learning experiences. #MasteryChat
A1: To me, the maker movement is about creating without rules (or with few rules). Itās about giving kids the space to build whatever they might imagine, thereby sparking curiosity and creativity. #masterychat
A1. The maker movement is creating ACTIVE classrooms, where students are engaged, teachers relinquish control, and creativity is free to flow and flourish. #MasteryChat
A1 - To me, the maker movement means opening, doors, minds & hearts. Enhancing real world problem solving skills. Promoting survival using available tools & resources & when unavailable pushing envelops and brackets to find new ways. CREATIVE SOUL FOOD! #MasteryChat
A1: Making is using the creative process. Sometimes it is to solve a problem. Sometimes it is to express oneās self. Sometimes it can be to explore and have fun! #MasteryChat
The Make Movement means letting kids be kids! They learn by getting their hands on things. There are so many ways for them to bring out the curriculum while they are making! #MasteryChat
A1: Not really knowing anything about the maker movement what I have seen and when I hear it I think about learning through trial and error, learning by doing and creating. #MasteryChat
A1 Makers share their understanding and unleash their creativity through hands on building and novel application of tools. Student learning, choice, and the iterative process are at the center. #masterychat#makered
#MasteryChat a1 i have been contemplating how to define Maker Ed to people not in education, ppl that wouldnt understand most of the words we use ... the people whom i would want to back it and fund it...
A1 The Maker Movement means allowing students to explore how to solve problems collaboratively, see how parts interact and how to troubleshoot when needed #masterychat
A1 - Maker Movement is going back to applying what we teach to what we need it for. It answers the "Why do I need to know Algebra?" question, it is problem solving and practical #MasteryChat
A1: the maker movement is allowing kids the opportunity to put their knowledge to use and create new and unique things without constraints and rules #MasteryChat
A1. The maker movement is creating ACTIVE classrooms, where students are engaged, teachers relinquish control, and creativity is free to flow and flourish. #MasteryChat
A2 The maker movement to me is a switch to more application of learning! A chance for us to help our students understand WHY they are coming to school each day. #masterychat
A1: Maker movement sounds daunting, but all of us able to create something. So to me, it's providing opportunities to create something- 3d printing, editing/producing a video, song, presentation, podcast. Making something #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A1 helping Ss unleash their creative genius using any medium they choose to solve problems, explore the world and make it better (but that wouldnt define it for a lay person, say a businessman...
A1: Maker movement means that our students should be CREATING & DOING. They should not be filling out worksheets every day. We need creators in our world #masterychat
A1. The maker movement allows for active learning, Ss using creativity to design and create different things and put their imagination into real life experiences.#masterychat
Exactly!! The share is as important as everything else. Especially if we can get the share in an authentic environment with an authentic audience! #masterychat
A1 Makers share their understanding and unleash their creativity through hands on building and novel application of tools. Student learning, choice, and the iterative process are at the center. #masterychat#makered
A1: In my HS classes, I truly try to work in maker projects or activities, but sometimes our hands on stuff is more hands on tech/English creations. Still cool, but not true maker space stuff. #masterychat
A1 - Whatās the Maker Movement? Itās tinkering, building, tearing apart, rebuilding, crafting, etc. Itās a safe environment for children to explore their creativity and build! #MasteryChat
A1: The Maker movement helps us make school REAL - meaning relational, experiential, authentic, and learner-driven. It gives students a chance to see themselves as creators and collaborators and creative problem solvers. #MasteryChat
A1 - #masterychat - interesting question because I just helped out in Robotics class over the lady week, and I saw a lot of making in action. I think the idea is providing the space for exploration of open ended tasks that have multiple pathways or solutions.
A1: The maker movement allows Ss to engage building, exploration, creation, testing out ideas, and problem solving in a safe and fun environment where the T serves as a resource and support. #MasteryChat
A1 - The Maker Movement means providing students with AUYTHENTIC and engaging ways to interact with content while using the design, and creative processes to explore the world! #masterychat
A1: To me the maker movement is likely just another fad. I feel like it can all too often change the focus to creating a product instead of actually learning the content/concept. It can be done well but I do not think the way it is commonly implemented is positve
#masterychat
A2. I chose to come to my current district because of their passion for the MakerMovement. I see a district that values experiences over regurgitated content. Empowered learners over master test takers. I see Passion Based Learning through Maker. #MasteryChat
The Makerspace in our LC has brought so many more students into the space that would never have come. It has unleashed the potential in so many students. #MasteryChat
A1
I want to see students create things.
Gone are the days of writing a report about something.
Now, let's see what students can DO with something.
What can they build, model, or invent.
What can they make?
#masterychat
To me school Maker Movements are integrating what we used to do in electives and at home in the classroom: shop, drafting, art... except itās an integrated approach. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat a1 i have been contemplating how to define Maker Ed to people not in education, ppl that wouldnt understand most of the words we use ... the people whom i would want to back it and fund it...
A1 Maker movement to me is ālearning by doingā artistry, creativity, craftsmanship, and being able to take things apart and then restore. Itās giving people the time needed to explore and figure things out their way. #masterychat
A2: Our District recently passed a referendum to get us access to new technology and materials, which has been amazing! Now we need to CREATE rather than consume these supplies. #MasteryChat
A2. Maker has brought a REAL understanding of the value of failure. We practice failure daily and then cultivate perseverance and re-stratigizing as a tool for REAL growth. #MasteryChat
A2 We have seen classrooms, schools, and entire districts transform the way they teach, and the way students learn, by embracing not just the maker movement, but the maker mindset as well. #MasteryChat
A2 - We are seeing a shift toward project-based learning, a push to solving a real world problem to make that learning experience more meaningful and deeper #MasteryChat
The first few weeks a kid is in my class, they struggle with this. Theyāre used to being told exactly what to do and how to do it. Once theyāre with me for a little bit, they LOVE the freedom and create amazing work. #masterychat
A2 the maker movement has forced me to be more critical of my practice. To think deeper and try to find ways for my students to truly SHOW me what they know! #masterychat
A2 - I think this movement has impacted many districts I work with. However, I also feel that a lot of times the resources are provided and available but the follow through on tru implementation is lacking #masterychat
A1 It's a way for Ts in almost all content areas to give Ss a chance to try their hands at solving real-world issues through science, ingenuity, and trial and error. #masterychat
A2: itās impacted our school by showing students as teachers that learning can occur in a non-traditional way. Experimenting with creating builds as much, if not more, knowledge as typical classroom learning. #MasteryChat
Any new practice or theory needs educators to implement it correctly. Maker isn't about the end result. It is about the process. It is about using the content as a tool for making. Not a fad in my room or district. It is a powerful tool! #masterychat
A1: To me the maker movement is likely just another fad. I feel like it can all too often change the focus to creating a product instead of actually learning the content/concept. It can be done well but I do not think the way it is commonly implemented is positve
#masterychat
A1 part 2 making is also not something can be fully planned. It isnāt saying āmake a lego model of this book scene.ā And sometimes we get caught up making cool stuff and miss the purpose: opportunities for our students to wonder and explore and fail and create! #MasteryChat
A2: today, after school we had NINETEEN students to join @LeighKuhn2 and I in the library for #codeclub. Students rotated and explored coding with maker tools. The discourse and excitement were so contagious. #masterychat
A2: I try to switch over from paper filled responses to maker filled responses! I love when students put effort into better, more thorough and thoughtful process which give me more of an understanding of Ss knowledge than paper #masterychat
A1. Although I havenāt used the term, based on what you are all saying, we need the Maker Movement for Schools to thrive. Any kid at home could be a part of the Google movement and find info. Our kids need to create and explore at school. They need to be engaged! #masterychat
A2: To this point the maker movement hasn't really impacted my school. We are talking about changing the computer lab (which will be obsolete in May) into some sort of maker type room. So we will get there. #MasteryChat
A2 - I think this movement has impacted many districts I work with. However, I also feel that a lot of times the resources are provided and available but the follow through on true implementation is lacking #masterychat
A1 - The Maker Movement means providing students with AUYTHENTIC and engaging ways to interact with content while using the design, and creative processes to explore the world! #masterychat
A1 the maker movement means letting Ss explore concepts through hands on discovery. So many concepts are better understood when they have been experienced and allowing Ss to make helps to apply and synthesize their learning #MasteryChat
A2: The Maker Movement has brought about a new found admiration for student work. Everyone loved coming to see what is being made in our learning commons. #masterychat
A2 - Hard to say. Our district is currently on a #blendedlearning and #PBL kick, but our buildingās library has a designated Maker Space. #MasteryChat
That is awesome. I have the same struggles in my class. Yes you can get out of your seat and move and create. Yes you don't have to ask me to go get supplies. No I am not telling you exactly what to do..I want you to solve and create! #MasteryChat

@Jennifer_Manly, @Ms_Whittaker_GE, @TallTalTeaches
#MasteryChat - A2 - we have maker spaces in each of the elementary schools in our district. We also have mobile maker spaces at the middle school. We have robotics for grades 5-8 in middle school as well. Too many great things going on to list though.
I started a self-paced unit this week, with the oppritunity for students to show me what they know at the end. The kids had no clue how to handle all the freedom at first. More modeling still to do! #MasteryChat
In reply to
@Jennifer_Manly, @Ms_Whittaker_GE, @TallTalTeaches
A2: no makerspace yet in the schools I have taught š I know maker spaces are used mostly for STEAm like activities but I would like to create one for idea of creating one for targetting language learning #MasteryChat
A2: Still at beginning phases, but trying to bring the design thinking to all classes. Promoting a fail forward mentality & being comfortable with delayed success. #MasteryChat
A1: I wish I had known that it was OK to feel insufficient sometimes, that it was OK to make mistakes along the way, and that it was OK to leave work at work and focus on my personal life at home. #MasteryChat
A2: It has inspired classrooms to try to create opportunities for Ss to create with their hands. Our library now has a maker space too! It has reinforced for many of us the idea that inquiry turned fluid, active & gloriously imaginative is where itās at for Ss. #masterychat
A2: The maker movement has led to required project tests. Even when a project does not fit the curriculum.
If we can shift the emphasis to creating things when it fits and remove other content from the schedule to produce more time. Then I would support it more
#masterychat
That is awesome. I have the same struggles in my class. Yes you can get out of your seat and move and create. Yes you don't have to ask me to go get supplies. No I am not telling you exactly what to do..I want you to solve and create! #MasteryChat

I'm lucky enough to learn from the amazing #steammaker@DrJacieMaslyk whose leadership has renewed my passion for teaching. The maker movement makes learning real and relevant for all involved. #masterychat
A2
Our students are becoming thoughtful learners, they are making decisions, collaborating, and asking questions. They are more curious about everything. A definite change in mindset is clearly happening #masterychat
A2 - We are seeing a shift toward project-based learning, a push to solving a real world problem to make that learning experience more meaningful and deeper #MasteryChat
Hey Dr A! Learning by doing. Learning is messy and kids have to roll their sleeves up and dive in. We as teachers have to provide students those authentic learning opportunities! #MasteryChat
When asked to teach science and create a robotics track I found myself making things regularly. 3 yrs later when we build a 40 gallon aquarium or an aquaponics system it seems normal. The success bought us a longer leash in trusting the process. #MasteryChat
A3 - EMPATHY - Ss interviewing and design for other peoples needs. EMBRACE OF STRUGGLE - Ss see the struggle as the challenge and becomes the fun part of the process. CONSENSUS - Ss learn to value voice and shared decisions. #MasteryChat
A2: honestly, Iāve seen little hints of it here or there, like a trend waiting to take off, but I want to see examples of this as a way of classroom life, not just todayās fad. #MasteryChat
A3-One of the best things that āmakingā can do is foster a growth mindset and unique view of failure. Failure is a natural part of this process and it can help students overcome the traditional mindset of fail=stop and create a FAIL=First Attempt In Learning #masterychat
A2: I'm lucky enough to learn from the amazing #steammaker@DrJacieMaslyk whose leadership has renewed my passion for teaching. The maker movement makes learning real and relevant for all involved. #masterychat
The most important part of the maker movement for me has been letting go of becoming an expert in something before you let Ss try it. Whe you foster a culture of, let's try it together and let's see, it's freeing for them, bc they know the sole purpose is to learn #masterychat
A2: The Maker Movement has brought about a new found admiration for student work. Everyone loved coming to see what is being made in our learning commons. #masterychat
Totally agree @TallTalTeaches This focus on PROCESS should be at the root of all learning, and all assessment. Life in the 21st century is about being able to PS & that requires critical thinking & the ability to work through problems, question, redefine & try again. #MasteryChat
Any new practice or theory needs educators to implement it correctly. Maker isn't about the end result. It is about the process. It is about using the content as a tool for making. Not a fad in my room or district. It is a powerful tool! #masterychat

#masterychat
Being in a very large district I feel we may have pockets of schools that are more into the maker movement. Feel it may be in schools that have more money from families or PTA to support the efforts. #MasteryChat
A2: With nothing more than an empty portable & a few thousand dollars, our STEAM release teacher @nanwill6 has transformed our entire school community w/ our MakerSpace. Kids are begging to go. When a class earns a class prize, they want time in the MakerSpace. #MasteryChat
A2 Our kids love their STEM class and our science teachers are always finding new ways to challenge/inspire our kids. Even in French class, my kids are always thrilled to create, build, and work together, even if it isn't problem-solving exactly. #masterychat
A3: Students see a problem and address it. Cannot wait for you all to see what some of our kids have in mind with the @Raspberry_Pi + green screen. #MasteryChat
A1: I'm not going to lie. True #makerspace makes my students really excited, & it makes me really anxious. š It's controlled creative chaos, & it took me a bit of time to be able to let it roll! I've morphed if to create an ELAR maker space, & I'm loving it. #masterychat
A2 we are just starting to become aware of the power of making. My district is committed to creating dedicated spaces in our buildings. They are in the planning phase now and are researching best practices to create a space that will be valuable not just look pretty #MasteryChat
A2: I think the maker movement is inspiring Ts to scrap the textbook and worksheets and let Ss learn through active participation, creation, cooperation, and collaboration. Making, creating, and learning from the successes and failures of others. #MasteryChat
A2 - Hard to say. Our district is currently on a #blendedlearning and #PBL kick, but our buildingās library has a designated Maker Space. #MasteryChat
A3 Perhaps not a unique skill set but by opening up a maker mindset in the classroom I see students more willing to help one another and individuals more apt to explore many possibilities rather than settling on first ideas. #masterychat#shiftthis
A3: losing the fear of failure or messing up! A maker space is a grade free zone that allows students to experience trial and error without negative repercussions. #MasteryChat
A3 -The biggest thing I have seen is the self-reflection and critical-thinking skills that this kind of instruction can cultivate. Instead of just regurgitating what they are taught Ss can explain and make connections about what they are learning #MasteryChat
A3 - #masterychat - so many great skills - perseverance, collaboration, coding. Making is great place to solidify those growth mindset mantras that we teach our kids as well.
A3: I have had the opportunity to showcase my ability to be a lifelong learner to my students , I donāt have all the answers but I can find them and grow just like Ss- also they get to see that we are all a work in progress each with areas to improve in.#MasteryChat
A2 - From my point of view, #MakerEd is an incredible tool for engagement of ALL students. I am continually astounded about how the movement meets the needs of students that otherwise struggle to explore and express in traditional models of ed. #MasteryChat
A3: The Maker community within my classroom has been an interesting process. Iād say the best skill that has been developed is authentic collaboration. I watch students WANT to help eachother. It makes my teacher heart happy. #MasteryChat
A3 This year one of my big focuses is to allow my students more opportunities to apply what we are learning in math. I am trying to make sure everything I am trying in my class is being shared with others in my district! We need to share! #MasteryChat
A2 The school I am at this year has an absolutely AMAZING maker space, and the person in charge of it has done an incredible job of building it as a place of resources, open to all, for exploration and creation and innovation. #masterychat
U would be amazed how much making U can do with glue, tape, cardboard, and objects most people just throw away. Plus, b on the lookout for grants.Maker is becoming a thing that organizations want 2 fund! I reach out 2 business and get tons of materials donated! #masterychat
A3 Not that anyone needs a devoted space but having just opened our new innovation lab has created a spark in our edus to incorporate more maker opportunities into the curriculum. #masterychat
A3: development of skills students will actually use/need in real life - problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, compromise, perseverance, empathy #masterychat
A3 - Collaboration of students who traditionally struggle with getting on/along with others. The hands on, open-ended, high-ceiling, low floor tasks are so inclusive they foster unlikely partnerships, tactics and interactions, accompanied by unusual resourcefulness. #MasteryChat
Sorry, running late A1: It means students being able to interact with content and concepts to better comprehend and apply learning. It also means Ss getting a chance to demonstrate mastery of said content and concepts. #MasteryChat
A3: the willingness to try something. Before Ss and Ts were reluctant to try something for fear of outcome. The maker movement allows for iterations, trial and error. That's where true learning occurs. #masterychat
So true! I talk to my students all the time about what Iām reading and looking for their feedback on the new things Iām trying in class. They are by far the greatest resource we have to help our practice! #MasteryChat
Yup when people visit schools they should not see kids sitting quietly all class. Have to create the next generation of movers and makers. #MasteryChat
Making is not learning when the focus is on the product over the process, when the making is one-off "keychain" making, or when everyone is "making" the same recipe. It's also not learning when the space is so open kids are lost, or choose what's easy. Hard balance. #masterychat
A1: To me the maker movement is likely just another fad. I feel like it can all too often change the focus to creating a product instead of actually learning the content/concept. It can be done well but I do not think the way it is commonly implemented is positve
#masterychat
Thank you! Itās always easier to create change as a community! We donāt need to stick to just our classrooms, we should all be sharing and pushing each other to do better! #KidsDeserveit#MasteryChat
A3: I see students in our MakerSpace share their strengths in ways I donāt always see in class. I see them come alive. I see their passions & their creativity - & their classmates see it too. Our MakerSpace creates community because it lets kids be who they are. #MasteryChat
A3 It has helped with collaboration, celebration, and resilience. Ss are excited to help one another, build one another up, and cheer each other on! #masterychat
Just think about what you can do with Lego engineering. Use Googleās Science Journal to measure and record speed. Use @Screencastify to record the process. So much magic. #MasteryChat
This might be my fav tweet so far!! It is about Ts and Ss taking risks. Practicing risk taking leads to an embrace in struggle which leads to a citizen filled with grit and ambition!! #masterychat
I love love it when students get to be creative and build a product of their own, not a copy and pasted creation but a product that showcases learning and their take on how to present it!! #MasteryChat
A3: The BEST skill is coaching!! Kids have an authentic reason to communicate academically, and they love helping each other. My rule is that they canāt ādriveā by touching the mouse or materials, so they have to learn how to coach. Itās awesome! #masterychat
A3: In my experience, when Ss have the opportunity to make something, they can find their hidden leadership potential. Ss who may not be the best at composing essays or answering tests shine when presented with a problem that involves creating. #MasteryChat
Absolutely! Plus, Maker is like Superman. That skill or gift that a kid didn't know they possessed turns into a superpower and a new skill that builds confidence!! #masterychat
Struggles and risks....that is where real learning takes place. Learning is not easy and to really break barriers Ss have to be comfortable in having that support in risk taking. #MasteryChat
I had a student once who invented puzzle boxes to bring in to me and solve. The first few he did by following instructions on a YouTube video, then he started designing his own! #masterychat
A3: Appreciation and acknowledgment for talents and skills (of all types), rather than just for rote memorization or regurgitation of content and facts. With that, an increase in Ss confidence, thus increased development of intrinsic motivation! #MasteryChat
My own son will sit and watch YouTube āHow to Makeā and then turn around and create his own items inspired by his learning from others! Innovations are made by those that create! #MasteryChat
A4. MATERIALS -Classroom can become a collection of STUFF. A system for set-up and clean-up is essential. ALPHA ISSUES - putting systems in place for ALL voices is key. SHUSH - Make directions as minimal as possible. DON'T STEAL THE MAGIC by giving too much up-front. #MasteryChat
OH MY AWESOMENESS!! YES.. Maker brings the quiet kid out like the sleeping giant. Kids are hungry to show their skills. Some kids don't have worksheet skills and test skills. But they can create and show off their creative thinking!! #masterychat
A3: I see students in our MakerSpace share their strengths in ways I donāt always see in class. I see them come alive. I see their passions & their creativity - & their classmates see it too. Our MakerSpace creates community because it lets kids be who they are. #MasteryChat
A3:) #Makerspace turns out students into mini-MacGyvers! I am constantly amazed at the increase in their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities when faced with a challenge and limited supplies! Seriously crazy what they can do with a paper clip! #masterychat
A3. So would students coding in various classes, creating robots, lego robotics and other STEAM related activities be considered āMaker Movementā? Going to need to brush up on the term. #masterychat
A3 when I saw members of the Robotics Team walking to the STEM class every morning, they seemed driven and confident and I was envious of what their STEM teacher was bringing out of them, but happy those Ss got to see that side of themselves so early. #masterychat
A4: There is never enough time for clean-up, which means I spend a considerable amount of time cleaning up. But the kids deserve PLAY, so I guess it counts as exercise? #masterychat
A4 - The biggest challenge I see is not providing resources for schools but providing training, and follow through so that they get used properly to get students MAKING! #masterychat
A4: Our biggest challenge is access to supplies; I used my own money on a few Amazon deals for my classroom. It was worth it. I know spending money on your classroom isnāt for anyone, but it was for me this time. #MasteryChat
A4: letting go of the sage on the stage role and embracing the messy facilitator one instead. This way my scholars get to become their own sages. #MasteryChat
In Ontario our curriculum is becoming evermore inquiry based (Social Studies & Sci leading the way w/ Math not far behind). It's easy to align with curriculum expectations. Our Provincial gr. 3 & 6 tests are still written but will need to adapt & change. #MasteryChat
A4: Not having enough time to catch up with all the tech and apps out there. Not having enough time to research them. Funds, standardized assessments and finding time to plan lessons that target mandated content using maker movement #masterychat
A4 Major makerspace challenge = space!! Where do I store all the projects that are a work in progress? Our lab looks messy but it just learning in action. #masterychat
A4: Storage space, getting Ss started that very first time, and sometimes working through the personalities/daily drama of teens! And sometimes the imagination and innovation have to be coaxed out of hiding! #masterychat
Yes creators! Tell my students this all the time...going to set you apart in the world if you can take something and create it or be innovative enough to change something. #MasteryChat
A3: Appreciation and acknowledgment for talents and skills (of all types), rather than just for rote memorization or regurgitation of content and facts. With that, an increase in Ss confidence, thus increased development of intrinsic motivation! #MasteryChat
#Masterychat - A4 - Classroom Management!! It canāt be complete chaos, and making can easily get out of hand when there are so many independent and personalized projects going on.
A4: Making comes with FAILING! By taking chances, you are putting yourself out there and at times you will fail. Lessons wonāt work. And thatās okay. #masterychat
A4 I have learned that the only obstacle I have is myself. Itās not always easy to have the courage to break routine and try something new. BUT ITS NECESSARY! We have to grow along with education! #MasteryChat
A4 Understanding how to actually put it in place. I LOVE the maker philosophy. I BELIEVE in the power it has for students.
I honestly have no idea how to actually do it. lol
#masterychat
A4: Time management has beaten me up multiple times on this. Then also finding the space. Making sure the students truly understand how creating helps them learn new content. #masterychat
A4: Some possible challenges I can foresee are students being indecisive when given choice, or maybe doubting their own ability to be creative #masterychat
A4 - Supplies... At first I didnāt understand or practice deconstruction, specifically connected to low-tech tasks. This resulted in the loss of tremendous supplies, fighting over who takes things home. Photo/video documenting and posting allows all to share. #MasteryChat
This is a common problem. When the school and staff buy-in to Maker, space usually appears. I have to get real creative with storing big projects or projects that take a long time!! But.. Learning is messy. #masterychat
A5. - CONTENT fav is Roller Coaster Physics. Box of tubes, tape, cups, and a marble. Design a coaster that has a hill, turn, loop, and stops. (Kinetic and Potential energy, friction, inertia, etc.) Kids have fun, struggle, and apply. #MasteryChat
A4:
1) It needs to make sense to "make something"
2) Students must learn content before they apply it
3) Creating takes a long time to do well
4) Projects need to be directly linked to the concepts, not loosely affiliated
5) Needs to assess the taught content/skills
#masterychat
What are your solutions to this? I foresee a problem where many different grades/classes are keeping works-in-progress in the innovation lab. #masterychat#rigorANDplay
Full time teacher. Just been fortunate to have partnered with them to blog about their product and how to implement it into the classroom (https://t.co/aO0cOmz9Pg) and host a few of their #NewselaChat#masterychat

A4 when I began teaching we relied on explicit direct instruction. Over time our culture has shifted to allow for more teacher control over lessons and I began adding in more Constructivist activities. It has been hard, Ss were afraid to fail and lacked skills for it #masterychat
A4 maker is a mindset not a time to do cute activities. It's great to try and get kids exploring don't save it for the end of unit or holiday project. #MasteryChat
A5. NON-CONTENT 1st Week Trophy. Ss interview a peer. Find 3 things they are proud of. Find 1 obstacle they want to overcome this year. (Make friends, raise hand more, etc) Then, design an end of year trophy that shows 3 strengths and the conquered obstacle! #MasteryChat
Show them the way Robert. My philosophy has always been to put kids first, show off what is working, and seek others to join your movement! #masterychat
Students always need that push. Itās so hard to create a self motivated classroom. But creating strong relationships and building trust is the best way to start! #MasteryChat
A4: Space! Finding space to safely store the materials & Ss creations is a big challenge. I would love to have Ss create mini-golf courses for Science (which would also align with a large school fundraiser), but storing them isnāt going to be easyā¦ #MasteryChat
A4: I feel like the biggest challenge with the Maker Movement (any movement) is giving Ts time to experiment & learn about it. I can find $ for materials & supplies. I can make space. But Ts deserve to the chance to explore & be makers, too - & be compensated for it. #MasteryChat
A4 Like all things making sure it is not just a substitute or busy activity but it actually enhances learning And is meaningful. It has to be intentional to be meaningful. #masterychat
A2: There is a Maker Space Group the meets after-school. We also have a few other movements that may qualify as Maker Movements, like our Innovation Room that weāve started this year for passion projects. #MasteryChat
A4. A multitude of materials for Ss to explore, create, design , and invent with in the classroom environment. Circuitry, different materials, etc.#masterychat
A5 - One of my favorite maker activities was a bottle rocket design project I did with my students. Seeing their ideas, their failures, and the LEARNING that occurred was always a thrill! #masterychat
A6: Students in my 4th grade class have been using @GetKahoot to create assessments to give to peers. I took so many (sub-par) Kahoot quizzes today. But the moment a student realizes it didnāt turn out how they intended and they run back to their group...worth it. #MasteryChat
A5: Content related: Sphero water olympics. Kids have to create suiting for their sphero to complete different tasks using a variety of weird materials. #masterychat
Designing maker is all about being Intentional and Purposeful. That is written on the top of my design sheets to make sure I do not create fluff projects. #masterychat
A4: I feel like the biggest challenge with the Maker Movement (any movement) is giving Ts time to experiment & learn about it. I can find $ for materials & supplies. I can make space. But Ts deserve to the chance to explore & be makers, too - & be compensated for it. #MasteryChat
A5: That's a tough one. Anything with cardboard. Students can just be so creative with it. Also LEGO EV3, it brings together LEGO masters with coding creators.#MasteryChat
A5 I am answering the #AwesomeSauce#EduWin maker project as a parent. My daughter was studying birds and crafted her own birdhouse. The best part was the application of math, science, and aesthetic design...all for grade 1! #masterychat
A3: In our Innovation Room, Iāve noticed students collaborating on and offline that I never thought would. Itās been exciting to see their interests come to life. #MasteryChat
A5 cont I love watching the wonder and seeing students make meaningful connections to learning. I also love watching the collaboration, risk taking and perseverance. Active learning #masterychat
A5: In mythology, it's the "Design the superhero/mythological doll" contest. A T is selected as judge, & then Ss have to create it to appeal to the audience, decide where to launch ads, price, etc. A replica is attempted after the sketch. #masterychat
A5: my favorite maker activity so far would have to be building the Alamo with random items given and shooting a gum ball into it. It was entertaining to watch and the students loved it! #masterychat#makerspace
A4: Our school's #makerspace challenges come down to time and space. Both are in short supply. I'd like to see more community mentors come to work with the students, but that's a get-there-someday wish for now. #masterychat
We are ALL on a journey of learning and growth. :)
The thing I learn more than anything else with each year that goes by is how much I do not know! What an awesome thing to be able to constantly keep learning. :)
#masterychat
#MasteryChat A5 my problem is i like all of the various types of projects : coding, electronics, woodworking, culinary, gardening, cardboard construction....
A5 - I love using MakerEd with literature. Having students create a potential solution to a problem in the text & then sharing and comparing - Priceless! Throw in a GreenScreen @DoInkTweets capture, and pull them/their solution into a part of the text... #priceless#MasteryChat
A1: The Maker Movement is still new to me - but from what I have seen and experienced it's a good way to bring STEM into the classroom and connect to science/NGSS standards. #MasteryChat
A5 - #masterychat - this is my fourth year helping out with @firstlegoleague at my school. It is a lot of work, but the kids love it and it ends up being a great learning experience.
A5: Iāve loved seeing catapults, bridges, and grabbers!! Iāve had my own children subscribed to @kiwicrate! Theyāve made many incredible things that have inspired multiple class projects! #MasteryChat
Maker workshops are so fun as well. Learning by doing is the best! I have been to MakerEd workshops and I now run my own workshops. They are my favorite because watching the lightbulbs come on with adults is truly amazing!! #masterychat
A4: I feel like the biggest challenge with the Maker Movement (any movement) is giving Ts time to experiment & learn about it. I can find $ for materials & supplies. I can make space. But Ts deserve to the chance to explore & be makers, too - & be compensated for it. #MasteryChat
A4. We are fortunate enough to have exceptional admin. like @mosesd1970 that promote and provide exceptional opportunities like @OrlMakerFaire for all students. #masterychat
A4: One of the hardest things for us has been to convince some teachers that itās OK to let go of the reins a little bit and to just roll with it. Itās also been a challenge to earn administrative support for the time spent outside of the traditional classroom. #MasteryChat
A5 This year my Ss were excited to share their understanding of our lit book through maker projects. Some worked with cardboard, others used legos and stop motion, some built with wood. Every project needed to come back to purpose/intent. #masterychat#makered
A5 I did a unit in Kindergarten and another time in 2nd grade on motion #masterychat
Students designed boats, cars, air planes, and eventually cardboard roller coasters. They learned so much.
A5: Ss right now are learning @scratch to design code ot teach and learn about human body systems(dig system right now). Last year Ss designed structures based on biomimicry. This year, it will go beyond design by actually making prototypes and lasercut structures. #masterychat
A5: The recycled bottle cap murals that students have created are truly amazing. And so are their marble slides and obstacle courses they create. #MasteryChat
A5: Not much to contribute, but I'm lurking and learning. But, went to a MakerFair last year in PGH and made this out of a recycled pallet. Have never been crafty or hands-on but I totally enjoyed this & I could see Ss enjoying a blank "canvas" and workspace to use #MasteryChat
A5: My gr. 4/5 Ss are currently learning to code w/ Scratch to create a trivia game for a Social Studies unit and will participate in a āCoding Questā w/ other gr. 4-6 Ss. I am learning Scratch along w/ my Ss. So much fun learning together! #MasteryChat
Definitely a shift. I got a new coteacher a few years ago and she always said her hardest shift into it was the letting go part and accepting the organized chaos it it #MasteryChat
A5: Adaptation lesson with Sphero's. Kids fix up a solo cup that has a balloon attached to it with a variety of supplies and try to pop their opponents balloon before getting their own balloon popped. Lots of testing, and rebuilding, and problem solving. #masterychat
A4 one of my favorite projects is the newspaper chair challenge - unlimited newspaper, one roll of tape Then we test to see if it can hold the weight of an adult #collaboration#masterychat
#MasteryChat A5 my problem is i like all of the various types of projects : coding, electronics, woodworking, culinary, gardening, cardboard construction....
When Ss can work with relevant, real world problems the maker mindset really takes off. Design Thinking, with humans at the center, can make a real difference with successful implementation of #makered. #masterychat#dtk12chat
A5 my favorite make me activity may be in its infancy. Today I introduced this digital connect 4 game and my students asked for me to create other game boards to play digitally and I totally think that should be on them as well as how they will integrate content #MasteryChat
A5
I love giving a mixed bag of blocks or @LEGO_Group Legos to a small group of students. I then say "Build me a ______. You have two minutes. GO!!" #masterychat
A5 I have a small maker area in my classroom, and I love allowing Ss time to explore their learning. From building to making models I love watching my ss engrossed in something they are passionate about. #masterychat
one of the #SpEd teachers I worked with last year incorporated activities each week - it was a great way to create collaboration and boost language skills #MasteryChat
Maker has been a huge help with collaboration. I make my alphas stay quiet for first 5 minutes of design. Let all voices shine first! It has really helped and their trust and connection has really grown! #masterychat
Hey #MasteryChat crew! Gotta jump off and head to a School Board Meeting. Canāt wait to catch up on the tweets later! Your creativity and passion is inspiring!
My life is lived inside that organized chaos. Early on I was so scared to be judged by those around me, but I saw that my students were truly learning! Thatās what matters! #Masterychat
had a 8th grade student help me build one.... first time they touched a drill ; had Seniors build a picnic table for an outdoor work space (that was interesting since they had never built anything) #MasteryChat
I will see if I can pull them up and share with you! I normally have Ss do a presentation to the "client" who is a volunteer T on prep, and I score them on it having accessories, "powers," the stores they plan to sell it, & future marketing prospects. #masterychat
A6. "MAKE a product that shows your understanding of the following: Your Book's Main idea, author's purpose, and why it connected with you." "Make a products that applies our forces and motion unit skills to teach another grade level." #MasteryChat
Thank you for the validation, Tiffany! With ya on this Craig! I can't offer much, but I have picked up over 10 excellent ideas tonight from this chat that will help teachers and groups I am supporting. So #grateful and huge admiration for the people in #masterychat
I would like to learn more about those kind of activities! I have been dreaming about incorporating a maker space style for language learning #masterychat
A6. "MAKE a product that shows your understanding of place value." "Using your MAKER Minds, invent a product that can be used to show what adding Mixed Numbers really looks like." #MasteryChat
We love our @sphero bots... but be prepared. Two of my three have a REALLY short battery life... like minutes long. The coding aspect is great, just wish they held up better in the long run. #masterychat

Legos are so powerful. @WickedDecent uses them in amazing ways. I like his approach for using just 6 pieces to craft a symbol or summary of a presentation or chapter. Marrying maker with creative sharing of understanding. #masterychat

A6 - While the product that is created is always important I think its a students ability to reflect, answer questions about, and articulate understanding of what and why theyāve made the product is where we can assess their growth. #masterychat
Feedback from Ts using @cwra_beat performance task template as a way to tweak existing lessons with an objective product to make has been positive.#masterychat#UbD

A6 Sometimes what Ss make seem to make little/no sense to us. I like to get them to explain the item, and justify how it helps/serves its purpose. Get them to write it and it pairs well with ELA too. Try to see it through their eyes. #masterychat
A6: If a student can model that they know a concept - they know it! Applying is one of the deepest levels of understanding.
@lynzhite and I did this last year with a transverse/longitudinal waves maker. #masterychat
A6: I think it allows me to hear the students thinking from their explanations. I feel like I learn a lot more from this than a worksheet. Plus you hear their reflections they make about what they can do better for next time! #masterychat
thank YOU! I totally will! - attended and presented at the CA STEAM symposium @CDEfoundation - and there were so many maker stations and cool things happening...I luvd that it went hand in hand with STEAM/STEAM! #MasteryChat#caSTEAM18
Thanks Tim! #masterychat Creative constraints are powerful ways to push students to be more intentional & think deeper about their subject matter #criticalcreativity#LEGO
A6 Any creative endeavor can open up opportunities for Ss to share understanding. When we work w/ very young children & they make a mark on paper we ask, "tell me what you have done here" & they go into great detail about what they are thinking. #masterychat
I have an engineering journal that students complete. They have to complete for each challenge. In some, there is a rubric that is specific to the challenge. #masterychat
A6 - While the product that is created is always important I think its a students ability to reflect, answer questions about, and articulate understanding of what and why theyāve made the product is where we can assess their growth. #masterychat
Exactly. Takes awhile to get comfortable to do that and to stop worrying that your class looks different...are kids learning? Are kids safe? Are kids happy? If yes then all good! #MasteryChat

A6: I firmly believe informal assessment is the most useful assessment (at least in my position in upper EL). If I can interact with the students as they go through this process, I know who āgets it.ā Iāve never been huge into formal assessment. #MasteryChat
Maker Ed is an awesome way to gain clarity around Work Habits and Learning Skills/21C Learning Skills. It is invaluable because it is active & collaboration is essential! Beyond that the opportunities for meta cognition, writing, math and science are abundant. #MasteryChat
Edutopia for research and inspiration. Maybe a list of what a start-up maker looks like. I am compiling a list of twitter handles and hashtags that can be shared!
#masterychat
A5:) I don't use our school #makerspace often, but I am planning an ELAR Writers' Night version. My students will lead friends & family in creating different writing pieces! Supplies will be set out at stations w/various projects. It's a make-n-take maker space!! #masterychat
A6: I think it allows me to hear the students thinking from their explanations. I feel like I learn a lot more from this than a worksheet. Plus you hear their reflections they make about what they can do better for next time! #masterychat
The intentionality is the key to leaning into student work when it comes to making! Asking them "why" and "for what purpose" allows their creative endeavors to be connected to their learning balancing academic rigor and playful exploration. #masterychat
Ideas: pick a problem that exists in the novel and find a way to solve it, create PSAs about common issues, infographics to relay information to others, videos/podcasts to interview characters. #MasteryChat
Start with Friday challenges. Sacrifice a little content time just to get them to fall in love. Then take that passion into content. Science is a great place to start! #masterychat
That is the trick, but the written and oral presentation pieces are definitely helpful in ELA, as is listening. Can do #bookbentos are a great way for Ss to share creations that represent what they are reading. #masterychat
Last year I had MS kids animate short stories in VR.
Iāve had kids build solutions to the characterās problem. The. Explain how their solution changes the ending of the story #MasteryChat
Learned from a great presenter (I wish I remember who):
1. Ask WHAT we are creating.
2. Ask HOW we are creating.
3. Ask WHY we are creating.
#MasteryChat
#masterychat I am looking for ways to provide more low tech high tech opportunities for students to feel validated. Letās systematically fit this into the day. Ideas?
It is all about rethinking you process of delivery. The better I get at designing maker units, the more time i clear up for student diving in and growing. #masterychat
Thank you #masterychat PLN! I really enjoyed learning from you all and I have some great ideas for moving forward with the #makermovement. Thank you @TallTalTeaches for hosting tonight.
A6: I havenāt tried it yet but I think a Maker project and @Flipgrid would be a powerful assessment & ālogbookā tool. Making Flipgrid response videos for a Maker project! Authentically track Ss thinking & ideas in the moment. The making & creating is endless, haha! #MasteryChat
Play-doh and LEGOs are my favorite to use. Plus, the students love it! They are also easy to implement any content area from vocabulary in ELA to Social Studies with describing events. #masterychat
Last year I had MS kids animate short stories in VR.
Iāve had kids build solutions to the characterās problem. The. Explain how their solution changes the ending of the story #MasteryChat
Or I've had them record themselves reading books for the Kindergarten Ts, and producing audiobooks. We put the mp3s in a team drive for the Ts to access. #masterychat
Possibly: Break or take something apart on purpose and have students fix it, have students design quizzes/assessments for others, have students be ābuddiesā with younger grades, ask students to create school PSAs (expectations or bullying info)...#MasteryChat

When I was in the cladsrom teaching science, I would ask students to "show me" what they learned over the past few days, weeks, or months. No parameters. Just show me. They could work in teams or individually. #MasteryChat
that's exactly what one of our Ts started doing - Friday STEM Challenge...
I was grateful that she invited my class into hers to partake in some of these challenges - SpED + Gen Ed :) #MasteryChat
A4 - I have seen this successfully implemented in junior shook and elementary schools, the obstacle comes in the high school because the current course offerings do not provide the implementation of Maker except for select courses #MasteryChat
A6: The last year or so Iāve really moved away from traditional quizzes/tests and encourage students to make something to prove they know X, Y, Z. Less stress for them and I get genuine products where their personality shines through. So much more rewarding. #MasteryChat
A6: I firmly believe informal assessment is the most useful assessment (at least in my position in upper EL). If I can interact with the students as they go through this process, I know who āgets it.ā Iāve never been huge into formal assessment. #MasteryChat
A7 - Curious, what new āmaker edā task have you personally understand and worked through the process? If not, what goals do you have for your own Maker Ed journey? #MasteryChat
YES. I use fligrid to showcase their work but more importantly for them to showcase the process. Their peers jump in and give advice for hurdles as well! #masterychat

I am NO expert, but this is a passion of mine. Please follow and tweet or DM me so we can chat about what practical implementation looks like in our classrooms! Letās DO this!

Oh, yeah! Forgot that. You can have them create book talks/reviews in commercial or movie trailer style on @Flipgrid then create the QR code, stick it on the book, and awesomesauce! Could to TV commercials too... #masterychat
A6 I assess the process, not the project. Are they using the design process? Is there evidence of deep thinking? Are they using the 4cs? Sometimes projects don't turn out as planned and it's even worse to get a failing grade because its not pretty. #masterychat
This is a great question!! Jump on everyone! For me, I am growing with coding, 3d printing, and use of drones. I am trying to get more fabrication into my kids hands as well. #masterychat
A7 - Curious, what new āmaker edā task have you personally understand and worked through the process? If not, what goals do you have for your own Maker Ed journey? #MasteryChat
Sometimes I do mid project "Shark Tank" presentations. It is more of a show off where you are and use the audience to help inspire future decisions. #masterychat
Thanks for all of your ideas tonight! Learned some good things and also let me know we are on the right track and how to get better. Thnx #masterychat
If you guys are free this coming Monday, Nov. 19th weād love to have you join #COLchat at 9pm EST.
