Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.
Aaaaaand we are off #dtk12chat We use the Q1 A1 style .... If you can introduce yourself below.... I am Bonnie from BC and have a new job teaching new curriculum in a new school.
Chris Stephenson, Vero Beach, FL - Director of Academic Techology amongst other things...and I speak with an authentic Irish accent. #notfakeaccent#norniron#dtk12chat
A1; Where would you start? I mean - in history the history is written. In the Geography classroom, it's so easy to post the DThinking question around things like the #globalgoals - how do you frame DThinking in the history context? #dtk12chat
A1 my 11th grade social studies teacher Mr Smith brought history to life through the art of storytelling; every lesson was built on narrative & shaped around ridiculous characters such as Joe Q Public and Ida Rathernot #dtk12chat

Hey wild bunch! Chris in Atlanta. I teach Maker, Design, and Engineering in middle school and am an Innovation Diploma Partner in the Upper school #dtk12chat
Since #designthinking is about empathy fueled, human centered problem solving, history classes provide great opportunities to reverse engineer solutions to past problems & design more effective ones #dtk12chat#sschat

I love that approach. Great opportunity to emphasize the thinking aspect. Building intentionally, synthesizing (we have so much info now!), learning from others #dtk12chat
We connected ancient history to the UN Sustainable Goals...basically, how do we ensure our civilization isn't the next one listed in the textbook? Here's a blog post: https://t.co/zVF3GglsRv#dtk12chat
#whatif we connected through our PLN to more diverse schools & developed authentic working relationships with other students & educators who might then be willing to provide insights & co-design solutions? #dtk12chat#edtech4good@EmpaticoOrg
A1. I think I rely a bit much on DT as a design challenge. How might social studies emphasize the thinking/mindsets/abilities rather than process, because history is already written process might be harder to work #dtk12chat
Q2: What is the perspective of an Amercian going to Europe? (I'm Irish and was taught from the "other perspective" of American involvement in war) - so would love the chance to empathise through primary and secondary sources as to what Americans felt #dtk12chat
It's something we are tackling this year... shifting people's view of DT to a mindset and not just a way to solve a challenge. @SarahZRaskin & @CDMdreamers created mini-moves ppl can use in class to build that mindset #dtk12chat

Yes. Exactly why I use #designthinking as a pedagogical lens & mindset for a problem solving environment, rather than trying to frame all curriculum around a sequence of design challenges #dtk12chat

Renewable energy DT challenge came about organically from students after a CA SS unit on California nonrenewable resources. #dtk12chathttps://t.co/rwwbtSqWrx
A3 We have a challenge where students are learning about poverty and integrating in economics, education, sociology, & anthropology (to lesser degrees) to understand how poverty impacts their communities and individuals #dtk12chat It has been eye opening for many
This is getting me to think about how I approach the topic, where I emphasize students doing things like moving between concrete and abstract, I fail to do so myself in losing the connection to thinking and how we can apply it, and what it means to be a designer #dtk12chat

Q3: Have done this when looking at Freshwater Issues in @ibmyp and DP Geography. Have the students look at this image and See Think Wonder about what is happening... https://t.co/gV6v3mEgo9#dtk12chat
A3 to uncover needs of migrant workers in Great Depression, students designed tiny houses to address their physical, social, economic & mental needs; used Steinbeck & @librarycongress American memory project & @SmithsonianFolk as sources #dtk12chat#sschat
A4 I think DT can easily integrate in with citizenship standards, economics, and social problems where student apply the mindset to understand societal problems that exist in their community (poverty, gender equality, etc) #dtk12chat
A3: #dtk12chat Martin Luther’s 95 These. Students researched student code of conduct, found the grievances they had with it, argued and presented their findings, and attempted to solve the issues of other students.

A4. To answer the opposite, being human centered pairs well with social studies. It allows us to explore more than just what happened and consider implications old and new #dtk12chat
A3 few years ago we used DT to study Armenian Genocide. We interviewed members of local Armenian community, visited local church and attempted to create possible solutions for USA to acknowledge. All in conjunction with school production: beast of the moon #dtk12chat
Creative, and perhaps more sustainable, constraints. Also, look for the essence of ancient solutions, for example, many small efforts working together can achieve great things-- Easily translated to exponential technologies.
A3: We do an Ancient Egypt musuem. Students learn about a specific part of the civilization and have to create an interactive exhibit for the needs of another student in the class. #dtk12chat
A5 failure has come with not having enough time to implement, failure has come when I was still learning the process and could not clearly present prototyping ideas #dtk12chat
Well NCLB is gone, but our school was deemed "Program Improvement" so we had to follow prescribed scope/sequence that did NOT meet student needs. It's different now, but ppl are still scared to be creative because of the high stakes test. #dtk12chat
Sometimes, we, as schools, do a great job of eliminating creativity. My 6 year old is so creative but my high school students have been taught that creativity is not important since the focus is on standards #dtk12chat We have to unprogram them to realize they are creative

#dtk12chat and these would be some of the self-same problems that Rittle and Webber explored in their seminal article that introduced the concept of wicked problems. (Dilemmas in a General Theory of Planning.) See also Kolko's great pdf on Wicked Probs. https://t.co/z1ePWOgO9L
#Dtk12chat If we look deeply at experiences different people have in common places (ei. grocery stores, malls, on sidewalks at night), the emotions and perceptions are greatly influenced by some Humanities, right?
Some very excellent ideas here and thanks for DesignThinking resources to reflect on tomorrow! This was my first time in this chat! Really cool and awesom peeps! Thank you! You rock and get the SnoopNod! #dtk12chat
I have a 6 year-old as well. He's insanely creative. Frankly your comment scares me greatly. I don't want him to lose that creativity, that wonder, and that imagination because our educational system beats it out of him. #dtk12chat
Do you incorporate some of that subversively creative stuff now? I'm also interested in testing prototyping cultures with lesson design to empower educators to take risks on stuff like roleplaying as pirates #dtk12chat
Well, he goes to the school I teach at. We utilize design thinking in all grade levels for a variety of projects integrated with the curriculum. I run the makerspace. He gets an opportunity to be in it whenever he wants. #dtk12chat
It is what makes #designthinking DT W/O Empathy its design or something else The key 2 your Q missed this
Empathy Drives the Design, the designer The User Leads Why its Impt. 2 teach Ss DT is all abt strengthening your empathetic posture Comes way b4 iteration #3rdchat#dtk12chat
Ah I meant it as as exclamation at the end of the sentence, right!? I'm all about creating rich experiences for students. But I work in the nonprofit space so I have the luxury of flexibility with learning outcomes #dtk12chat
In our school, we are charged w teaching the 4Cs in our course and we are not tied to state exams. I told our S that we are here to stress the really important skills u need for life. The system of winners/losers that you have experienced does NOT exist in our class #dtk12chat

A7 #dtk12chat Virtual/Augmented reality is great at helping students experience new things and potentially leading to a lot of empathy. It can, when executed properly, be a great tool for dt
A6 Im not sure the exact Q yet i would tie the Great Depression & The Grapes of Wrath… Through this novel study I believe #designthinking challenges will emerge Gr8 Empathetic moments #dtk12chat Also, Primary Sources of Gr8 Depression provide opportunities 2 Design #DEEPdt
yes, we are a "restart" school so we have the flexibility to do some new things. I left a great position to take this one because it was the right thing to do for our students. We have freedom to incorporate their interests into the course and it is ours (not mine) #dtk12chat

The district I am in now is focused on an extraordinary school experience so it's all about creativity, problem solving, relevant life experiences. I am in heaven #dtk12chat
I saw that Q… I just happened across Q3 LIVE so I shared my Q & 2cents I will go back through the other Qs of #3rdchat Thanks #dtk12chat cc @bethfuston
A8 #dtk12chat WE have to teach social justice within context of empathy - it is a keystone of citizenship even if we makes uncomfortable. If we fail to do this, we fail our S with helping them become good citizens #dtk12chat Growth is uncomfortable but needed
A8 both and! I have seen it generate conversation at my current school @AGSHurricanes amongst students and teachers. I have also seen people retreat into thinking that justifies certain actions and/or avoid these tough conversations #dtk12chat
Yes! They are getting what really matters. We have to create authentic experiences that help our S. If we are not, we are keeping them from being successful in life #dtk12chat
In reply to
@LSpencerEdD, @MattCriscuolo, @njkraai
A8. Definitely not mutually exclusive. Vulnerable experiences make some people retreat and empower others. That's some ambiguity we need to navigate Definitely never getting the full picture, though we may try #dtk12chat
SJ is a marker of leftist politics to those who see the world in binaries. They tie it to Marxist critiques & other hot button, anti-democratic/progressive rhetoric. While I appreciate the question, w/i context of DT, DT is not a messiah. Though it is a start. #dtk12chat
I would push back on this. the VR exp, to me, is still watching a movie or looking at "stills". We are pushing our Ss in our VR lab to find or create that empathetic exp. I don't think a VR trip to the summit of Denali lets me "experience" the journey at atlitude, YET #Dtk12chat
Just landed in Vancouver & waiting 4 my bag. How’s #dtk12chat tonight? Excited 4 #designcampBC#AMPED18 (did I get the hashtag right?) this weekend! This is the quietest airport. So nice. #airportart
For sure. I'd re-emphasize the vulnerable experiences part. I've seemingly been fortunate enough to have no experience with truly awful people, and many of us in a face to face vulnerable situation have trouble telling someone they're a bad/invalid person #dtk12chat
Definitely! That empathetic experience is the difference for sure. WE have to ensure that occurs for it to be meaningful - not just for the sake of doing something cool #dtk12chat
A8 I think Social Justice has many broad & specific opports 4 design presently as well as studying points of history. I collaborated w/ 4th grade on a pretty meaty SJ Unit w/ novels, current events, & community members https://t.co/UUlyCJBJ4P cc @farnhamjenny#DEEPdt#dtk12chat
#dtk12chat... well that is all that I have ... it was a last minute step-in for me. I hope to hear more thoughts about your DT mindsets and the smeeeerrrrdddgeee with content, competency-based education and the general ups and downs with teaching! Bye for Now Folks!!!
Q2: The core principles of design thinking are to empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. How do you teach students to empathize, or identify, with others? #3rdchat#designthinking
