#teacherfriends Hi everyone, I'm Heather. I'm actually a college student studying special education in Illinois, but have taught preschool for a couple years prior. I'm a newbie, but I can't wait to start teaching independently.
You can do it! I'm on my last two days. Heading back early to attend a workshop. Who says #teacherfriends don't give up their vacations to help Ss and schools grow?
Yes! They really do earn the novelty of learning. My K toys get just as much love from my 5th grade Ss; hot wheels, magnatiles and all. :) #teacherfriends

#TeacherFriends Q1: What does teaching 'outside the box' mean to you? Who are your inspirations? What resources stretch the box?
*Please share photos where your Ss are outside the box. Any quotes that inspire you to take a risk?
A1) Teaching outside the box means experimenting and trying new ways to engage Ss! Doing things no one else is doing and trying ideas from digital connections! #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends Q1:Teaching outsde he box is engaging! It is hands on, standards aligned, kids getting dirty, low paper, enthusiastic, true learning experience where my kids are connecting, enjoying and and creating!
#TeacherFriends This is 'outside the box' thinking or maybe it is actually INSIDE a box?
Using something so familiar as an invitation to create something so new. Wouldn't this be perfect in your #ECE classroom?
#TeacherFriends A1: Bringing in the extra motivators...things like real caterpillars for a study on metamorphosis, or real tadpoles, etc. Creating art with real things from nature and more!
#teacherfriends Q1:Teaching outsde he box is engaging! It is hands on, standards aligned, kids getting dirty, low paper, enthusiastic, true learning experience where my kids are connecting, enjoying and and creating!
#TeacherFriends To me, getting 'outside the box' always involves collaboration. Our incredible #PLN here at this hashtag has inspired so much growth over the years.
Teaching outside the box allows Ss to discover learning rather than regurgitate it.
Here Ss worked in partners to create a 3D shape and find it's volume.
#teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A1: Pulling materials together to create a standards connected theme that excites and motivates! Creating an envirnment for a real virtual experience (a campsite, an ocean...tons of things to make your classroom another world)
#teacherfriends A1 (part 1): teaching outside the box means integrating hands-on and new (to the students) materials in my lessons & trying new and different approaches for teaching a concept. My approach to teaching & children is mostly inspired by the best teachers I've had.
love this!!!!!!!! #teacherfriends teaching outside the box for the older kids is just such an amazing opportunity for them instead of just worksheets!!!!!
#teacherfriends Hi, I’m Diva and I live and teach 3rd grade in Colorado. It’s been awhile since I have attended a #teacherfriends chat so I’m excited to be here!
#TeacherFriends A2: I love bringing a big sheet in to cover chairs to make a huge mitten from The Mitten by Jan Brett. Kinders climb in as their animal character is introduced, then spill out in hundreds of giggles and squeals when the bear sneezes! Fun!!
YES!!! hands on is so important!!! it is more meaningful and the kids will defnitely remember what they learned more through doing things hands on then skill and drill #teacherfriends

They are! But even a simple tablecloth can create a new learning experience. Ts should not feel that it always has to be big. Little touches go a long way, too. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Q2: How important is your classroom environment in order to teach outside of the box? How do you create that environment? Do you need help creating that type of environment? Photos of classroom vignettes, outside the box. Tips anyone?
The thing is it is really no different than what I would have done in K. It's the task that is different. For example, in k we built cubes. I'm just asking my 5th graders to find volume. Purpose/outcome different. #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends Q2: The classroom environment is very important. If my kids do not listen then I stop what I am doing and we go back to teaching in a different manner. In order for you to effectively teach outside of the box, you must be consistent and firm!
So true. Not sure if it is 'sad' that it takes so little to change the atmosphere of the classroom. Take a step! LUV this visual idea of changing things up. #TeacherFriends

#teacherfriends A1 (part 2): Quick example of seasons math activity I made for my preschoolers (took a lot of hot glue). I love creating my own activities that engage the kiddos. Connecting to the kids and having fun w/ them is 1 of the most important parts of teaching imo
A2) There has to be trust within the classroom community so that Ss and Ts are willing to take risks. I have a morning meeting every morning, model trying new experiences/things, mistakes are a frequent topic of convo #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Q2: How important is your classroom environment in order to teach outside of the box? How do you create that environment? Do you need help creating that type of environment? Photos of classroom vignettes, outside the box. Tips anyone?
#teacherfriends Q2: this is important when it comes to classroom environment! If you do not expect more of yourself then how can you expect more of them!
#TeacherFriends Having the opportunity to visit MANY classrooms from coast-to-coast, I am always impressed to see little vignettes that add #StudentVoice and #StudentChoice to the classroom environment.
#TeacherFriends A1: teaching outside the box for me is sometimes immersion in a concept. No pics...but we "painted" like Michaelangelo under our desks once. Laid on floor and colored above. It was a blast.
#teacherfriends Q2: The classroom environment is very important. If my kids do not listen then I stop what I am doing and we go back to teaching in a different manner. In order for you to effectively teach outside of the box, you must be consistent and firm!
That is one of my favorite activities to do with my kiddos! They love learning about Michaelangelo and then painting their own sistine chapel!!! #teacherfriends what makes it even more exciting is when we hang their paintings on our ceiling in the classroom!!!
#teacherfriends A2: creating an explorative and creative classroom environment (letting kids try different methods, not focusing on right/wrong of thoughts & answers, etc.) is V important for teaching outside of the box. If you don't let your kids do it, how are you going to?
My heart just literally 'sighed.' It is always my experience that engaging the Ss and getting them 'on stage' as leaders will create an uncommon experience and their effort and enthusiasm goes thru the roof! #TeacherFriends
This year, I tried something new to me and my Ss; classroom break out challenges that focus on certain concepts. They are different tasks cards w/hidden messages, etc. They love them. Lots of prep but meaning. No room changed needed. #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends A2: As someone who works predominantly with children with special needs, giving kids an environment best suited for them (static versus creative seating, quiet corner and areas for student collaboration, etc.) can really be a benefit for the students' learning
I think sometimes just changing the purpose for the walls can make a huge difference. Ss created is seems to always garner more interest. #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends what a great idea! We are just getting into fractions and this would be such a great, hands on activity for my students! Thanks for sharing!
#TeacherFriends Q3: What keeps teachers 'inside the box' in their teaching? Is it comfort zone? Fear? Lack of experience? How can we support each other stretching the envelope?
Support our PLN: How have you taken risks in your teaching? What has been the best risk you've taken?
#teacherfriends Q3: Take risks every day! they do not have to be huge risks! Also, you need an accountability partner! They are who you will bounce ideas, stress, fears and so forth off of! They are your support!
#teacherfriends Q3: Many of us still have the fear of failing! What if I fail! First of all you will never fail when you try something new! Especially if it is in the best interests of your students! Failing is not bad! It is a learning experience!
#TeacherFriends A3: I think time is our bigest enemy. We are pressed for time to get it all in! Most outside the box prep is before or after school hours, so not much time there. Also can be expensive to transform, which is why it is important to be resourceful.
Our 3rd whiteboard table arrived Friday! I rearranged the room! Can’t wait to surprise my students tomorrow! - Mrs. Smith #SmithTweetTales#SpoonerProud
#teacherfriends Q3: How can we expect our students to take risks if we don't do it ourselves! Step out of your comfort zone! Teach like there is NO box!
#TeacherFriends Every journey starts with the first step. Identifying where we are, where we want to go and devising a plan is the mark of a willing educator to MOVE in the direction of their goals and growth.
This was only up for a week. Ss created this after their research and it was on display when Fs came to see their presentations. Later is was all taken down. #teacherfriends
As a new teacher for my grade, I fail lots! I think I've learned that it is ok and to admit my mistakes to my Ss. I tell them Learning is about making mistakes. That is where we grow. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A2: my teacher inspiration was my 6th grade teacher Mrs. Mitchell. She not only demonstrated immense compassion but also out of the box methods. I remember a lesson about poetry but she had us do it like Refrigerator Perry Song (Chicago bears). It was the 80s.
A3: Unfortunately many times our workload & paperwork & time keep us from thinking outside of the box. After completing my "required" work, I have to choose: spending time with my own family or the extras for my class #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A3: Any number of things can leave teachers "in the box". As a new teacher, it can be awkward wanting to share ideas with veteran teachers using dated and repetitive methods. But as a newbie that's not always taken so kindly. Any ideas from the veteran teachers?

#teacherfriends Q3: Remember, we are not cookie cutters! We do not have to be all the same! Teach outside that box, forget that box exists! Teach for your students!
#TeacherFriends A3: it is hard to be the lead in changing the status quo. Like @HeidiSongs , years ago I wrote music related to the standards several years ago when not many classrooms were using music as a vehicle for instruction and active learning. It is a best practice now.
#TeacherFriends Q4: How can you/do you 'teach outside the box' given set curriculum, standards, scripted curriculum and any other "limitations" to your unique individuality & approach?
*How do you cultivate administrative support for teaching outside the box?
I have been teaching 24 years & I love 2 lrn new things! its all in the delivery! Don't be afraid 2 share. the worse that can happen is they dont use it! I love learning and trying new things! That is why I love having student teachers! They keep me young! LOL!!! #Teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A3: it's possible a fear of someone judging your methods or too self conscious to do something unique or novel. I've been caught singing, sitting on the floor with students in the middle of activities, juggling, etc. I've often said I have no shame. Lol.
#teacherfriends Q4: KNow your standards, know your students, know your administration, trust yourself! You know whats best and what will work for you! Do not try to be someone else!
#teacherfriends Q4: scripted curriculum is just words not actions! Make the most of the time allotment if you have one. When you are using a scripted curriculum, wear a costume! Make small group activities, room transformations are amazing! Be enthusiastic!
#TeacherFriends A4: While I've never had to work with an administration, they typically tend to like results. As long as the students are meeting their standards & getting results, it SHOULDN'T matter if we use class debates and group project over readings+worksheets to do it
#teacherfriends Q4: Be Unique! Be enthusiastic! you can create activities that are engaging for a set curriculum. You can make a scripted curriculum engaging!
#teacherfriends A4: when admins see growth, results and see students engaged they give you some room to stretch the boundaries. Easier for me in SpEd I realize.
#teacherfriends A4: when admins see growth, results and see students engaged they give you some room to stretch the boundaries. Easier for me in SpEd I realize.
#TeacherFriends A4: Know your stuff, and be ready to defend your methods with research if need be. If you believe in what you do, and students buy in, it will show!
#TeacherFriends A4 continued: Also important to realize that all students learn differently so if you're only teaching in one set way that seems to best fit the standards and curriculum, you probably won't reach all your students
I would say- when you share, lead with your class results- how well they learned with your idea. If they have no interest then to hear more, then you’ll know it wasn’t your idea that was the problem. #TeacherFriends

#TeacherFriends Q5: Think back over your year, reflect on your lessons: when you taught more 'outside of the box' was student engagement different? Please share great lessons (pics, plans, blog articles) where you have examples outside the box.
What lessons need some TLC?
A4: Admin love results. So make sure your instruction outside of the box has a way to measure success. Some type of Pre/post assessment. Try Poll everywhere an out of the box assessment #TeacherFriends
#teacherfriends Q5: whenever I taught outside of the box, my kids were more engaged! They were enthusiastic! They were learning! Teaching outside of the box makes teaching easier for me! It makes me love my job even more!
I think there is some happy adrenaline that gets buzzing with stepping into the unknown. The Ss sense that, they can see your excitement: contagious spiral of enthusiasm that feeds the cycle. #TeacherFriends

Just like littles, BIG kids are honest about what they liked or didn't like. Surveys can help to inform as well as word of mouth. Be open to listening and knowing what may work for you might not have be as well received by the Ss. #teacherfriends
A4: Just because you are following a given curriculum or pacing guide, doesn't mean you can't be out of the box... take that curriculum and teach it with manipulatives, or in the dark with flashlights, or in a different room, or outside, or with no pencils #TeacherFriends
#teacherfriends Q5: when I reflect, I always look at myself not just my kiddos! I also think that there is never a perfect lesson because I am not perefct and neither are my kiddos! There is always room for some TLC!!!
#TeacherFriends Please join me in thanking our own Cindy Price, for sharing her enthusiasm and insight. Any final thoughts or inspiration? @kindergatorss
#teacherfriends A5: to get on board with the full writing process we connected with another classroom in Texas and then built excitement using Google Classroom to write to our new friends. The take away from this pic of one group is ALL on task and creating
I know something worked when my kids beg to do it again! When they say they can't believe how fast the time went. My favorite is when they say they can't believe they were learning. :) #teacherfriends
