I love build with chrome too!
A3 The learners I support have families, some have multiple jobs. Athletes + couch potatoes.
Oh yes, especially the little sister books. Have you heard of the graphic novel versions written by Raina Telgemeier?!
I couldn't agree more with the idea that they love what you remember about them!
Great idea! Still time for another red apple. 3 for 3?

******Question 4 two minutes away ***********

Your student could be in charge of the 'song' hook when you need her!
I get a warm fuzzy because I taught these ss how to code! Awesome to see class activity become a passion
A3: I am using for the first time this year & Ss LOVE it!
Little Sister books were my first chapter books, and my first "binge reading" experience ha. Haven't seen the GN's
come grab a scoop from my basement floor. :)
Those are always a hit! My Ss really want to see some pics of me at their age (when I had hair) https://t.co/gvWK9k36WB
A3: Embarrassing stories of my teen years that help them see the fun in public embarrassment (my first date w/ hubs cracks them up)
A3: Totally depends on the age of S. But we must know what our Ss are interested in or we are going nowhere!
A2 ever done PE "with your Ss" and then returned to the classroom - it's like the aurora sticks with Ss the rest of the day.
A3: Ss want to matter & know that they make a difference. Ss' passion projects & online talent show is a peek into their world.
Yeah, it is a really cool app. A little bit like Minecraft
A3: My math Ss enjoy working on at home
A3: sports, music, movies, games..... talking to Ss is key! Keeping a list of interests is powerful...
One reason why I don't dislike recess duty - extra time to build relationships
That's so cool! Did any of your Ss finish ?
unlimited legos for free!!!
Love this! Same effect when I eat in the lunchroom. Kids LOVE it!
I'm excited to check it out!

my first date w/wife was equally funny/amusing…
A4 There's science behind why creative ideas come when our minds are relaxed. wrote about this in
Q4: Share questions that you could ask any student to spark up a conversation.
A3 Flip’d learning experience.. my 2 yo granddaughter Carly is schooling me in the finer points of being an engaged learner..
also since its MN, lots of Football, Hockey, which I don't really like, so XD
It's also a great time to brush up on 4 square skills! https://t.co/fECWUmXWac
One reason why I don't dislike recess duty - extra time to build relationships
That's great! Good bonding time!
A3: Ss will learn anything they love. Why would we take away opportunities for Ss instead of embracing them? https://t.co/4jMAdzykev
A3: As a band director it is so cool getting to "talk shop" about music with Ss like you would with friends or colleagues
They LOVE it when you play with them at recess as well! I have shocked many 6th grade boys with my spiral in football ;)
U of M women's hockey just won national title!
A3: Ss today were talking about our . There was a live discussion about what colleges students want to attend! always fun!
A3 I’m into enjoying what I do more like she seems to. We both have to work on tantrums tho.
A3 We talk about sports, the HS they'll go to, siblings, books, hobbies.. everything! Many Ss share stories w/ me 1st thing in morning
Especially those coming out as movies. Makes good conversation during reading then after watching the movie.
that's a neat idea! help them see their T is a real person too
Howdy ~ great chat so far! A4: If you could only keep one friend, HOW would you choose? I love hearing their answers to this one!
A4: What did you do over spring break? What should I read next? What Pandora station should I create?
A4: What did you do this weekend? We do this every Monday. Everyone gets to share!
it seemed to spark so many super fun convo’s
AMEN! I LOVE recess duty b/c I get to see kids in their "natural habitat"! I learn so much every time.
A4: What are you doing this summer? When is your next game? Why did you choose this book?Didn't I see you in Walmart.Rhey love walmart!
fascinating! I bet it causes deep thinking by the Ss!
A4: "What didn't happen this weekend that would have been great if it did?" Love this one. They tell you what they want right away!
A4: capturing kids hearts share good things best way to engage kids and hear what they like. Otherwise open ended questions
A4:My favorite is to ask "Is a hot dog a sandwich?" or "If you had a million to give away, which charity would you choose?"
I love getting to know Ss in lunch and study hall. Those times are not educationally dead time for me.
A4: How was your weekend? If you could have a superpower, what would it be? Wha is your favorite part of the book? Why?
A4 How was your weekend? Did you learn anything new over the break? What was your favorite thing about last night.
A4: What have you read lately that should be on everyone's must read list? How did you use math this weekend?
A4: Regular "QOD's" (? of Day). Non-academic, not too personal, aim for laugh ? for candy. HS Ss enjoy & get to know each other
A4 What did you do this weekend? If you had $50 what would you do with it? What are your favorite _____s ?
A4. What's a Bugatti? Or, Who's playing against Vikings/GreenBayPackers. I've never heard lol Only 23 & outoftouch
A4 look at book Ss is reading. ask about it
A4: "If you didn't have to be here, where would you go?"
totally! Maybe a "Yo" with a little head nod. haha
I love sitting down with kids at lunch and/or lunch
A4 - I hang out in the hall every morning and just say Good Morning and How are You. Usually get surrounded by students chatting.
A4 Ask them about the birthday party they went to this weekend. What did you bring for lunch? What are you going to do at recess?
A4. What are you excited about this week? What are you looking forward to?
A4 My APART class does Rose (high)thorn(low) of the week, every friday. Ss started it and love it!
A4: what do you do on weekends? what do you like to do with free time? TAKE NOTICE of clothing! tells a lot about kids! (sports, etc)
A4: What is the silliest thing you have ever done? What would you do if lunch was 1 hour long? https://t.co/TS11szcbe9
Q4: Share questions that you could ask any student to spark up a conversation.
A4: Ask about their favorites, current events, what if questions
A4 Make sure to ask open-ended questions: how, what, when, tell me about...
What if they would say, "School"! Wouldn't that be great.
Yes, it challenges them to dig deep! I also love asking "if you could make a friend's dream come true, what would it be?"
A4: "Is it too late now to say sorry?" This gets mixed responses from 5th graders.
A4:Each Mon we discuss the wkd events for each S. Ss could share the whole period if allowd. Love to talk about wkend.
A4: What is your act of courage?
- Mike from MD -playing around tonight. Hoping to get work done , courses or figuring out tech.
I'll be sure to mention that!
A4: For school opener, instead of Name/hobby/favorite food, I ask "what's your name? Tell me about how you got your name!"
A4 Ask what they did last night/weekend, or today's Q what they did on spring break. Easy convo starter. Learn a lot
A4: start question with set-up of "I noticed...." or "I heard..."
A4. "Tell me a joke!" My Ss love to tell me knock knock jokes & riddles
A4 it usually isn't a question that starts it, it is usually just being there to listen and they just hafta' tell you something
A4 What was the highlight of your day? Tell me about your family. What's your favorite book? What'd you have for dinner last night?
A4: My Ss love The If Book. Great starting spot for ?'s. If you could eat dinner with anyone, who would it be? https://t.co/IYxkm7A63q
Would love to have them share their ++ on Twitter using https://t.co/rOcpVULkFG
A4 My APART class does Rose (high)thorn(low) of the week, every friday. Ss started it and love it!
A4 talk about some crazy thing my kids do as my Ss do. be silly like them. have fun. ask what they do to have fun
a funny meme always seems to spark a story ;-) Appropriate "would you rathers" are always fun, too! Humor is the way!
A3 Skiing, Skateboarding, Horseback riding, working w/animals, dancing, art, yoga, mystery books, Arduino, &sports
SO amazing...we always ask students about their own dreams-what a great idea!
What is your greatest fear? What is something about yourself that you are proud of? How was that Duke/Vikings/Twins game last night?
A4: If you were in charge of the world, what would you do first? What is the funniest joke you know? What is a food you hate?
That's what we should all strive to create. Like said, "would your Ss come to class if they didn't have to?"
Q4: ask simple questions about their weekend or breaks! Show you care about what they do outside of school walls!
Is it more important to know things or communicate things? How would answering this affect one's teaching style?
I like that. Adding it to my list of Qs for beginning of year
A4 Another one most common lately, "Trump." *cue entire classroom groaning.
Need to head out a bit early tonight but thanks for the inspiration thanks for hosting
A4: What's for lunch today? Is it good? What's your favorite thing from the caf?
A4: always have questions ready for S. Never miss an opportunity to talk and connect. Not that hard to think of Qs, either.
a4 Every day i ask who deserves a point for something i missed, great time to see students compliment each other
A3 My HS students & I enjoy the arts in & out of the classroom so it helps us relate & share! https://t.co/5qmTO4jsMi
Everything I learned I learned
A?: Ask Ss on way out the door on Friday what they are looking forward to and then check back in on Monday with a few of them!!
A4 - Putting a song on from when I was in school always gets them talking.
A4: What's the worst color and why? What makes someone a "good" or "bad" person? How can I make things better?
A4: My HS Ss love ''Would you rather" Qs (even in 2nd lang!) Favorite: own a dragon, or BE a dragon?
love it! or how about showing them a yearbook from when you were a S? They think it's hilar.
could simply be to show if we could converse w/ Ss easily, show of trust that Ts/Ss can talk w/o difficulty?
I had a song of the day that I would blast out of my room down the hall. Students (not mine) would just wander in
I have asked those too, except I have a few target fans, they go every day!
Haven't done that but they really want to see some pictures of me with hair!
A4: ask their opinion about popular movies or music! Quote funny movies they have no idea you've seen!!
A4 If you could ask someone anything who would you ask?
That is awesome! Love this idea!
A4b: If you were from a distant planet, whom would you visit first? What advice would you give to humans?
I love suprising Ss with my knowledge of Disney shows!
********Question 5 two minutes away! Creativity on display in a way.
A4 What'd you make out of that bird landing on Bernie's podium the other day?
and I bonded through your mom jokes
Loving this chat, sadly have to go pick up the dog child from the groomer. Thanks everyone!
A4 Last yr I asked Ss "What would u get up at 5:23 for?" when I was waking at 5:23 just to make Book Study:) I really got to know Ss:)
Thanks for joining in! Thankful we could connect. Take care!
A4 If you could change one thing, what would it be? What would you like to do as a career? (I work at a high school.)
. Communicate. You can always learn things and be learning, but you & Ss learn less if you can't communicate well.
Love this!! Shows what they truly care about because you know how much everyone values sleep!
Q7: How do you reach the shy, quiet students and build rapport with them?
Love the yearbook idea... Ss love to read my Journal from 4th grade- wrote abt chasing boys at recess
A4 Also, what is something you're passionate about?
A4: What gives you joy? What would you do to make someone else's day? What is the kindest thing someone has done for you?
hahaha. hilar. did you catch any??
A7 eat with them at lunch. Food decreases tension.
Agreed! We can move too fast without purpose. Slow down to think about what matters.
Some of them come in and play Chess with me. I've got several ongoing games.
So, should we emphasize knowing stuff or communicating it? That is, what's important Content, Communication, or both?
A4: be able to hold a conversation about things they care about even if it's Mickey Mouse clubhouse!
A7: notice their interests and ask them for input on helping you gain more knowledge. Boy am I learning Anime (& having fun)
A7 I joke around with them. Even shy kids have a sense of humor. A little humor goes a long way!
A7 I keep a paper to make sure I get to every student each week and write down a small blurb about what we did/talked about
don't they love it when you see some hidden meaning in their art?
A7 At beginning of yr. Ss fill out info about them w/various ?.
great idea! Chess brings in a certain type of student. Great way to connect.
Jumping in pretty late (will be following along), Monica, Special Education teacher, Texas
that is a great Question I get even earlier than that for the job that I love... Teaching
A5: Takes time, they have to "buy-in" to you. You need to elicit their strengths.
A7 Many Ss come to you, but introverts may not. Seek them out, show them you care through their methods of communication (1on1 convo)
A7: I use blogs/notes with them. Personal letters & 2-way journals are POWERFUL! https://t.co/2csvtBF1Yz
Q7: How do you reach the shy, quiet students and build rapport with them?
Great idea! Being intentionally about reaching all Ss. Love it.
Everyone wants to be recognized for what they're good at. They walk a little taller when someone notices
A5: Joking around, and being silly breaks down all kinds of barriers with 9 year olds! Even the shy ones =-)
A7: Pay attention to what they wear (band, sport t-shirt) say hello daily, high fives, ask them what they do for fun, talk to them
talk to them outside of class. show them that you do notice them.
Had two Chess boards until spring break, when a new student bought me a third on his cruise to Mexico! Heart warmed.
A7 From 1960 through 1972 I was That Kid. Mrs. Beeson (Colton High journalism/English teacher) noticed I liked stories. "Spin one."
Coax them, esp. in smaller group discussions. Emphasize that their voice is just as impt. Compliments go a long way, as well
Yes! Now if we could only get "them" to slow down our curricula...
A4 Love conversations w/ HS students, I talk music, Netflix, baseball, fashion, school, travel, ect https://t.co/WBpAyhTVxO
A5: Talk to them one to one first, get them comfortable with you first.
A7 Reaching out & using parents as a resource to find out more about the shy kiddos!
A7 By sitting down next to them, paying attnt 2 who they are w/ in the halls, start w/easy ?'s & discover their humor!
A7: give opportunities for one on one conversation, find s connection, make it a point to chat outside of class
Ss often love when you attend their sporting events. Some are very appreciative of support.
A5 or A7: I like a sideways smile or goofy grin when something happens that only they would have noticed. Make our own inner circle!
Learn one of their interest, and just go out of the way to talk to them. Those kiddos crave the relationships the most
A7 I was that kid. Sometimes, you never seem to make that conxn. But trying to makes a world of difference to a shy child
Games like chess, cards, etc have become very popular in our school.
A4 or starts singing random music from the 80's and they look at you like you are a freak, breaks the ice though sometimes
These guys have a lot of responsibilities and couldn't get to 50,000 words. We celebrate what they did.
and now they have good feelings associated with you/school. win win.
A7: Joking around, and being silly breaks down all kinds of barriers with 9 year olds! Even the shy ones =-)
A7: writing. I have math Ss journal at the start of the year. General topics, but I learn about them quietly respond individually
A7: I always speak to them..even when they just look back and smile. I had one who eventually started talking to me (ELL student)
great way to get to know Ss! I created a form to gain background info in one of my grad classes to help with this
A7 So I suppose best way to build rapport is to take the other seriously: listen authentically/actively. Let 'em set high goal & meet.
A7 Learn one of their interests, and just go out of the way to talk to them. Those kiddos crave the relationships the most
A7: Provide alternative ways for Ss to offer opinions or info that don't put them on the spot. Journals, online discussions, etc.
a7
like to use as a Twitter chat in the classroom to give the quiet ones a voice, they can think and respond.
A7: We play games, spaghetti tower challenge, , Go Fish, War...my HS students love game time.
Yes! It's been a few years since I've done the 2 way journals...thanks for the reminder!
I do that too! Also a letter: Dear Teacher,
I want to tell you...
Ours, too. It's always so interesting to me how many of the kids don't play these games at home.
We learn more about kids through their writing than just about anything else!
Q7. Find small, meaningful ways to connect, esp. 1:1. Ask their opinion, listen to them, make conversation & be consistent
As saying goes, actions speak louder than words. You can act interested in Ss, but going to their events shows you are.
A5 Smile and say hi! Acknowledge them in little ways, that don't draw attention to them.
A7: find the ONE thing they're not shy about. Everyone has that one thing they love to talk about. Listen and be interested in it!
A7 find commonalities, similarities, common interests and get them to share what they know about common interest & be enthusiastic!
glad to see you! Thanks for joining!
A5: It takes time, but they will let you in but you need to be very observant to pick up on patterns, but get them writing
A7. Give inordinate amount of think time, create safe env., permit Ss to answer Q? accept w/o judgement. Encourage ELL particip.
Embarrassing myself has often allowed those quiet Ss to laugh. Build from there!
For sure! Make sure you connect with each student daily in some way. sticky note just to say "Hi ____! Have a great day!"
A7 I remember what HS was like (I'm a closet introvert) - find 1:1 time during class, ask Qs (not on the spot), learn interests
One prompt: "What consumed your thoughts most this summer?" Great topics and I can share back, too
A7: Notice things about them, outfit, hair, shoes. Point out strength in anwers/work. Catch them b4 leaving room to ask ?s
And how many choose to stick around after school to play. It is nice to put the devices down.
When teachers are able to laugh at themselves, it goes a long way toward disarming kiddos and bringing out their personalities
Absolutely! Firm believer in this.
A7: Don't forget about the shy kids! Be intentional about reaching them and finding a connection.
A7: Having Ss do written self-reflections or critiques can help the T 2 see where S is at. Use as communication starter.
My student teacher advisor would always have a joke ready, corny but it told a story, and it would diffuse situations
A7. Find small, meaningful ways to connect, esp. 1:1. Ask their opinion, listen to them, make conversation & be consistent
The importance of letting students share with you cannot be understated when building rapport. https://t.co/nYQZ3sFROM
I do that too! Also a letter: Dear Teacher,
I want to tell you...
A7: Be present. Listen. Ask questions as they receive them best. Offer choice, as with all, in knowledge construction and assessment.
Yes indeed. I often speak in Spanish in my classes. Helps my ELLs not feel too isolated, i think.
Humor diffuses a lot of tense situations. A valuable tool.
A5: At the beginning of the year I have Ps write me a letter about their child. I have my Ss write me a top 10 list about themselves.
A7 the morning greeting has a ton of power with all, especially the quiet students.
A7 Usually try something funny, pick up on somethng they are reading, or do, ask abt it, start converstn, greet them,
AMEN! There are SO many life lessons in a game of Canasta or Chutes and Ladders!
Attending one of their activities goes VERY far as well! So do home visits :)
A7- Continuously reach out to the shy. Maybe it doesn't work today, but tomorrow..WOW. Remind them their ideas need to be heard.
Yes! Laughter can do so much to bring out community
*******Question 8 two minutes away. ***** (FYI: I skipped 5 and 6).
A7 LOVE Ss's online voices. Used to hold Edmodo chats & now 2nd graders r "talking" through shy Ss often use !!!'s:)
A7 It may take time! keep trying. keep fishing. try different lures!
Humor is great. Sarcasm...not so much. Too me a while to clearly differentiate them as a young T
YES! grabbing a book off of a desk and asking about it is a great way to chat!
curious for opn. Told one of the more active Ss I only call on him once in our 10min class meets to give other Ss a chance to speak
A7 I like to draw & talk naturally alongside shy students & let them open up at their own pace https://t.co/rCENLODBdN
Hmmmm! Trying to keep us on our toes?
a WEEK AFTER school starts??? I would go crazy!! How do you plan out the start of your year?
Plus it is fun. Playing cards or chess, etc with students allows them to see you in different light too.
Music is the no barriers rapport builder.
Eventually, they'll speak up. Even if it 6mo or a year later ....
A7 I have a pair of jeans which refuse to keep my fly up. Works well for self-deprecating humor. https://t.co/l029qdl269
When teachers are able to laugh at themselves, it goes a long way toward disarming kiddos and bringing out their personalities
a7 sit at their tables, got rid of my desk and file cabinet, remove the wall, we are all students and teachers.
Yes! Student choice is huge!
https://t.co/PnSOuGq5FX
A7: Be present. Listen. Ask questions as they receive them best. Offer choice, as with all, in knowledge construction and assessment.
A7: Sit down and color a picture with them. It is therapeutic. The most reserved start to open up.
Yep, sarcasm in few instances can work but generally it is tricky
I bring this up at conferences, but realizing I need to remind Ss that we miss out when we don't hear their ideas!
Interesting idea! Maybe do this next year.
I agree. Sarcasm only when tremendous rapport has been established.
We have to know what we are talking about, but if we can't communicate, we can't teach. They are both important.
A7: Agree w 1:1 connection. Most introverts want close, quiet moments. You can find those even in a busy class https://t.co/eedtLWdaGQ
A7. Find small, meaningful ways to connect, esp. 1:1. Ask their opinion, listen to them, make conversation & be consistent
A7: Give them time, choice, and voice, but no matter what show them you care by just being there. https://t.co/kjmX9vMOdQ
A7 Find something they're good at. Talk to them. Compliment them. Have them demonstrate for the class in person or on video.
Yup! You said it! https://t.co/Ykev62A2VT
Agreed! When I shake EVERY hand, make eye contact, and warmly greet all Ss when they come in the room it makes a big difference
Q8: What are some obstacles that get in the way of building rapport with Ss?
I try to err on the side of kindness and gentleness when I joke around with the kiddos. I want them to feel welcome and appreciated
Even stress relieving for the T! A win/win situation
I've been looking for an excuse to color!
Do IT! If Batman was traveling X MPH and superman flying at YMPH who would get to Gotham city first?
A8 Some students have tough backgrounds that can be a hurdle for them to trust.
I've caught myself still coloring after my kids have been long gone.
A8 Lack of time is about the only thing that can get in the way of building rapport. The rest is just excuses
Delia!! You go girl, joining in on !! https://t.co/9g3fDUpuVQ
A7. Find small, meaningful ways to connect, esp. 1:1. Ask their opinion, listen to them, make conversation & be consistent
We do, but I was thinking about our Ss.
A8:at the HS/MS level you have less time daily, so you have to make a more conscious effort to connect
. Could you ask him to encourage others to speak? Having him serve as a facilitator may help & he'll still be involved!
Anything where you have fun with Ss, helps build rapport. I'm awesome at floor hockey & checkers!
inherent/conscious/unconscious biases https://t.co/Q4RN4VosGT
Q8: What are some obstacles that get in the way of building rapport with Ss?
A8: 29 students in a class! :(
sometimes it takes a different bait - try some or tactics
Same here. I had general activities with variety until after the 1st week when I got Ss info.
A8 Bad behavior by other Ss, sometimes the mix of Ss is tough.
and Time.. always time....
exactly. it's a tough situation. Need to get to know where Ss come from but hard for them to open up when it's dark.
We bald guys have a built-in bank of joke possibilities. For real!
I tell them: it's mean to keep their wonderful brain all to themselves. Love the bright smiles that follow.
A8 Ego. Pride. The stuff in Pandora's Box basically.
A8: trusting in adults, walls may be hard to break down
Dutch Blitz and Pit have been this years nice surprises
A8 assessments: ss taught Ts out to judge them, not help them to learn. Not helpful and powerfully reinforced by culture
A8 Having too many students in and out of my classroom each day.
A8 failure. When students don't succeed it can be harder to build rapport with that student.
A8: Time. Once you start a real relationship, people want more of it. Times 24 Ss and that can stretch a day. But every moment counts
Don't forget the joker. He could pop up at any minute throwing Kryptonite...
A8: time is biggest obstacle
A8: Shyness, lack of success in school setting(bullied, or lack of friends). If a student is not comfortable there for ANY reason...
and w/technology and so much learning going outside of the classroom, lack of time is teetering on brink of an "excuse" too
not always sometimes that Ss voice is the one that needs to be heard, Ss are looking to that voice for answers
A8 Other students who require more attention due to negative behaviors in the classroom
Dutch Blitz is a ton of fun! Plus I get to prove my reflexes still dominate
A8: Time due to too class size and configuration. Excessive "administrivia". Failure of Ts to recognize quality learning trumps reps.
A8 Large class sizes & increasing demands on Ss and Ts to do/cover more
A8: behavior issues, time, chatty students. make to touch base with Ss that you haven't connected with before they leave for the day
Yep! Or Batman left the Batcave w/ X batarangs, he used Y, how many does he have now? Draws Ss attn. due to diff. ?s
A8: Home life. Christmas/spring/summer break. Parents. Even at 10-11 yo Ss can have a big, thick, strong wall built with rel.-building
A8. The boundary btwn. T/S & friend can be hard to maintain. Being there for everyone, everyday is a challenge. Can be done, though!
A8: That expectation to 'do it all' and 'cram it all in' leave little time to sit and 'talk' with kids!
Yep, there is that. I think face to face has the biggest impact but keeping connections alive with tech is great too
been there. I am constantly moving around classroom during work periods and I still miss some of them!
Clothing is a means for Ss to express themselves!
They need to know what they are talking about...but life isn't one big game of Trivial Pursuit. Balance is key.
This is a good reason to build those situations for all to succeed at start of year, but throughout year too https://t.co/XnNRkGYlo1
A8 failure. When students don't succeed it can be harder to build rapport with that student.
Since we both have a T, I build rapport with this cutie by planning to wear the Ts on the same day! https://t.co/E2zFK6vcHV
A8: Their guard is up. They may live a life of instability & you may provide stability, but they are scared because it's new to them
Thats actually a good idea. Its also partially to help manage his blurting, but never thought to have him facilitate
I would say shyness for myself too! Sometimes I am not good at small talk either.
A8: T and/or S preconceptions can block rapport for a long time. Always be open to people, they're all coming from diff places.
It's about time! My first . Wouldn't be here without your help, Sylwia!
a8 my own ignorance of how much some students have to do just to get to school, rminding myself most go through more than we relaize
Or 2-3 students that require more ...hard to spread yourself evenly.
A8 The pressure (I put on myself) to stay on schedule and maintain a successful, hard working classroom can decrease convo time.
A8: Sometimes you just don't think there's time! But it is ALWAYS a worthy investment.
A8: obstacles=S's that cause distractions/test patience, family situations? S's being shy for any reasons (bullying, etc)
Give them safety, appreciate them and listen authentically, They'll tear down the walls
A8: The only obstacle to rapport is a negative mindset. Think ur too busy, too much to cover, too this, too that. Focus on rapport.
maybe we should apply this to real life too?
Amen!! https://t.co/GEm4NcrH3h
a8 my own ignorance of how much some students have to do just to get to school, rminding myself most go through more than we relaize
A8:Tchr having bad day. 4getting to put ur pen down & looking around at ur Ss to read their body language. Too much to do.
It goes toward showing you're a real person. You're not a robot. You're not perfect. You don't think you're perfect.
😊 how's it going?? Very fast but very fun. Am I right?!
Using this tomorrow! Thanks!
I have been able to build more rapport with ss through Instagram, and digital comments on reflections.
Happens at EL too. Especially w/ specialists - I have 1,400+ Ss or so. 2 schools rotate daily.
A8: Judging the external before knowing the internal. Some Ss have gone through more than we could even imagine. Some just need love
I agree. Finding quality time to allocate for each student on a daily/weekly basis is challenging https://t.co/EPa2IZyOCe
A8: Time. Once you start a real relationship, people want more of it. Times 24 Ss and that can stretch a day. But every moment counts
A8: Coming in with a minimal view & not seeing the true beauty teaching can be when barriers get lifted. https://t.co/FFZVAMIJDL
What does a happy meal have to do with writing? Fourth graders will show us on their writing STAAR tomorrow. https://t.co/N9nvwBrqEX
A8: Some Ssdon't want that relationship and Some Ss have less redeeming qualities, takes longer to find a way to get through.
A8 need for more time. Wish I could have more time to just "hang out" with them. Still no excuse, building rapport is constant
Moonshine labels printed, 1920s Radio made, Prohibition signs done, Jazz music selected...Speakeasy time :)
Shows that Ts make mistakes, too, not just Ss. Helps Ts be more relatable.
A8 Biggest thing that gets in the way - our Agendas.
So fast! But I've been using TweetDeck & it helps keep everything organized for me
Letting them know you will listen is key.
That is very true can't forget about those important people also!
A8 absent and uncaring parents create an initial obstacle. A little longer for these Ss to trust me....but they do.
Yep...just have to tune it all out and channel your inner Pirate!
A8: Everyday, wake up with the mindset of a T on a mission to build rapport. Post the word above your desk or mirror or door.
A8: T.I.M.E.! LOTS of kiddos need LOTS of time! Making sure that EVERYONE gets some 1:1 time, even if it's short.
*******Last question two minutes away********
thanks for leading this topic. I needed the reminder to focus on rapport, amidst a sea of challenges and obstacles
Yes. I just keep thinking sometimes we're pursuing Trivia in the name of documentation for our external stakeholders.
Agreed. will remind me - "You haven't replied to my post yet." They want responses -they want your attention!
Thanks for joining! Rapport can't be talked about enough. Glad to connect!
true, but isnt it also good for Ss to be able to find ans. themselves instd of relying on 1?
Yes, again, actions speak louder than words. By attending, you're showing interest, rather than claiming interest.
Yes and attention is the most scarce thing around these days. So many venues for our attention.
A8:We wouldn't teach if our Ss weren't our purpose. So, make time to be there mentally and not just physically https://t.co/8geZPeX6Oq
. I work with students, who are people. Unfortunately, they are often only seen as data points. This should change.
It helps me! My other "one word" is EXPERIENCES. Create them for Ss as much as possible!
A8: Ts operating in isolation. Embedded collaboration for collaborative responses to Ss in need help us slow down and SEE Ss.
It means a lot to kids to see somebody there just to support them.
Q9: After rapport has been built, how do you maintain it as Ss progress through the years of school?
That is AWESOME:) Our whole class decided to wear the same color shirt one day...it was so fun! They LOVED it!
I re-branded Lesson Plans as "Student Experiences" and my focus changed ENTIRELY!
Builds community, doesn't it?
Even more important for these Ss.
Love following a tchat & seeing the great things my t's tweet! Way to go
That's great! That is definitely stuff right there!
true, and sometimes that 1 needs to sit down and listen to hear maybe an ans. from those that are quiet
A9 - You maintain rapport by maintaining what built it.
A9/ I check in with ss after they leave my class,. I also monitor the D/F list to make sure my Ss have the support they need.
A9 Make a point of greeting students in the hall, before or after school, at lunch, in study hall, at events. Have conversations.
A9: REMEMBER names..remember things about that student...when you see them..greet them as old friends!
A9: All the little ways that say they matter. Remember to ask about that new family member/game/date...just let them know u listen
A9: I love something called "My Favorite." Any S can choose a day and gets 5min to share a passion/project/goal with class.
A9 I am lucky have most of my students for two years. I could really improve in this area. Many of my Ss transfer to new schools
A5: continue caring, connecting, stopping in the hall to chat, asking Q's, noticing hair cuts, put in the effort
A9 don't let students forget that you care.
A9: You maintain it by always listening and being present, inviting past Ss into your class
A9:Creating time to talk to Ss, asking them about their day/weekend/events, showing up at their events
love that idea. If ss are just data points, then there isn't student centered edu going on.
A9 We hold reunions every year which gives us all something to look forward to...we also make sure to connect online and we still chat
I want to see one of your Hooch labels
A9 cont... I say hi to students everytime I see them in the hallway and if time ask how things are going
A9: if you built rapport, the Ss will come see you as they get older. How many former Ss visit you each week?
A9 continue to acknowledge them when you see them outside of school (even if you don't remember their name 10 years later);
A9:They will ALWAYS be your kids! Be available, send congrats for grads, weddings, babies, etc. Go to events.
A9 participation. Conference proposals. Selfies with . Swim with a shark alongside
a9 know that everyone has genius, and appreciate them for the small victories and the risks taken.
A9: Continue to be their fan! I'll cut out pics of them in the newspaper to give them, stop to watch them in sports, say HI!
A9. Keep in contact w/ parents, attend school events that you know Ss will be part of, say hello in the halls
A9 does a fun meet and greet in the summer at Cherry Berry to reconnect w/Ss...my daughter loved that!
A9: Just the simple question, "How's___grade going" will go far with a S because they know you care about their progress
Hey! So happy to see you joined the chat! It's a great place to learn & sharpen the tools in your toolbox! ⚓️👍
Q9 :I don't know that I ever stop building rapport with my Ss...it's enough like trust it has to be maintained. Ongoing activity.
A9 Keep asking learners what they want/need. Do that. Be a lifelong learner.
A9: Ask about their personal interests, siblings, etc. I go 2 their basketball/extra curricular activities if they are close & free.
A9: Keep talking to them and their parents when you see them in the store, at the baseball game, ect. stay connected and invested
A9 I teach 6-8 Sci at a small school in small town. Lots of opportunities to see former ss.
A9: We are going to loop 7th/8th grade starting next year just for these reasons.
Or bring your a bday treat when it's their bday the following year? That's a true connection right there.
A9: "If it's important to you, it matters to me." Weave that into your every interaction, so you delight in their presence, every day!
A9 keep making an effort. Simple as always saying "hi" and asking them how they're doing even years down the road. Rapport is crucial
extra-curricular is a great place to connect and build rapport!
like the Google Map guy that jumps up and becomes live. Maybe data points can become action figures
A9: By having gatherings to catch up, check in with younger siblings, always make sure to check in if I see Ss out and about!
A9 make a pt to ck on them. say hi 2 Ss in hall. Ask how they r doing. I ask my collg Ss about Ss & pass note that I am proud of them
yep. deep connection. That's a teacher.
A9: maintain expectations, procedures and boundaries
https://t.co/hGv9bWU6A7
Q9: After rapport has been built, how do you maintain it as Ss progress through the years of school?
Thank you. Reach out, we want to help you.
YES - they LOVE their birthday and their birthday pencil. Making them a b-day card is HUGE!
A9: Get out in the community. Go to events. Shop in the neighborhood. See them.
thanks for a great chat! always great to be reminded of the power in rapport
A9: I'm in a K-12 school. Ss are ALWAYS welcome to visit :) I almost always have Ss in my room for lunch that aren't in my class.
A9 Make it no question that you are always there as a support, a shoulder, a listening ear, an open heart.
A9-Standing at your door, walking though campus at (gasp) lunch is opp to interact with past Ss and new Ss. Interact! Smile!
Glad to have you and to connect! Thanks for joining.
A9: catch them in hall to ask ?s. Refer back to info from days earlier. Congrat progress/achievmts & encourage.
