Thank you https://t.co/gT1fOtC4uR
Hey, , I'm compiling links to articles about the legislative session. Tag me on any you find, please.
A1 -- End of EOIs...high stakes, meaningless tests. On to more authentic assessment!
A1 reducing the amount of testing best for our Ss
School Board President - Chisholm Public Schools, Enid
Testing could have the biggest long term effect on students https://t.co/XCrmXYLxpA
Q1- What was the best legislation passed in 2016? Why is it so important? , Other
The defeat of the voucher bill early on was a relief.
A1: Dismissing EOI's! HST w/out value has never been a way to det S ach. https://t.co/EhtRyxdRgi
Q1- What was the best legislation passed in 2016? Why is it so important? , Other
A1 Moving towards less testing!
A1 Reducing testing, and I am partial to the new ELA standards.
A1 Cop out tie: ending VAM and the EOIs - Third would be enacting the standards, though no bills were passed https://t.co/aV4p1hIIR7
Q1- What was the best legislation passed in 2016? Why is it so important? , Other
is next on my radar...end high stakes. Use assessment to make education decisions!
Debbie Hoffman Principal, Cache 5th-6th Center, a middle school. Also a house full of kids! 💗
A1: Reduction of testing! For the Love that was a good one.
A1: I have to vote for HB3218 to eliminate EOIs and reduce testing in grades 3-8. This will help kids and teachers the most.
A1: Testing....Looking forward to the possibility of more useful data
Good copout answer. All three will mean more teaching and learning.
A1: HB2616 may not be the "Best" but potentially impact future funding for broadband for schools
A1: I do like the end of the EOIs. Hopefully, what the OK SDE implements will have more application and validity for Ss, Ts, and As.
Jason James Supt of - not a big fan of our POLs and their decisions. Hoping for a better future
So happy about this for all my colleagues!!! https://t.co/UQ8k23qswa
A1 Best legislation: Getting rid of as much testing as possible.
Testing, approval of standards...several, but very impressed with the ones we didn't let excape https://t.co/z3xHwKUAJB
Q1- What was the best legislation passed in 2016? Why is it so important? , Other
A1: Toss up between TLE and Testing. Legislation on both empower Ts to work magic without unnatural angst https://t.co/24lqHs69om
Q1- What was the best legislation passed in 2016? Why is it so important? , Other
A1) less testing, no more SAG for TLE, less safety drills, one dropout report per year. We can now focus more on teaching.
A1 Quant measures removed from TLE was pretty good!
A1) Reduction of HST and elimination of VAM
A1: I even hated the name "End of Instruction." That gone is a huge morale boost. As if after that defining test all learning stops?
it's the latest accessory! Rustic Cicada!!! https://t.co/xIwdppUJsA
Wrote a piece about cicadas...they were a fav when I was a kid! Loved 'em. But not to wear!!
5th & 6th grade Science in Clinton, Ok
Yes! But why do I have the fear we'll see it again...? https://t.co/cuzFPZAmk4
The defeat of the voucher bill early on was a relief.
Q2- What was the worst legislation passed in 2016? Why is it so detrimental?
should have been more like towards the end of instruction tests. Hated those followed immediately by semester tests.
Maybe I should rejoin as myself! Still a houseful of sweet kiddos!
Hopefully with the improvements with assessments the testing window will no longer control the end of school/learning
Alex McBride Carl Albert grad and just getting back from the Wichitas.
Vanessa Perez, Tech Integration Specialist, Clinton, juggling Twitter & baking blackberry muffins
is getting national news. Not positive news, but getting hammered by the myopic vision of R leadership toward services
A1) probably testing, but we have a loooonnnnngggggg way to go
Tegan Sexton, Moore, 5th grade
-- Because we know & their leggies really want vouchers.
Lori Wathen- parent (Robin Hill School) and public education advocate
A2: Legis waiting until the last wk to "work" on a budget. Hurts all of Oklahoma https://t.co/NDDwNVakTq
Q2- What was the worst legislation passed in 2016? Why is it so detrimental?
Defeating vouchers and dealing with bathrooms made it an eventual session https://t.co/iuA3RJS4MK
Q2- What was the worst legislation passed in 2016? Why is it so detrimental?
A2: Naming the dead canary the state bird???
A2 That would be the budget. It's neither flat nor honest. It's a badly missed opportunity. https://t.co/7uvbrmYFBW
Q2- What was the worst legislation passed in 2016? Why is it so detrimental?
biggest problem is the majority of people in Oklahoma think you have to be right of the Kaiser to run for political office!
A2: dodged some major bullets (ESAs, capping FBA, stopping stnds). The worst bill for the state was the budget authorization.
Just like Groundhog Day, vouchers will return the first week of every February.
A2 EITC leg will be most devastating. We have ppl with no boots, no bootstraps, and now no way to even look up.
A2 the budget hurts many in Oklahoma
A2--Budget bill is a stinking pile...of poo. In a flaming paper bag.
I think they worked on it the entire session just decided the "D" and "R" was more important then students https://t.co/1NH48c6THi
A2: Legis waiting until the last wk to "work" on a budget. Hurts all of Oklahoma https://t.co/NDDwNVakTq
Q2- What was the worst legislation passed in 2016? Why is it so detrimental?
Not just one bill-basically how they treat education-waiting until the last minute on important issues. https://t.co/qEGsJfjMJJ
Q2- What was the worst legislation passed in 2016? Why is it so detrimental?
A2) the budget, will hurt students and families in and out of the classroom
A2: They had all session to work on the budget. That was a crappy deal that will hurt a lot of people.
A2) Does the lackluster budget deal count?
But they're easier to beat down than those pesky millionaires and their millions, huh?
Or before then in the State of the State address.... https://t.co/ZwnQhqZieA
Just like Groundhog Day, vouchers will return the first week of every February.
A2) no money for textbooks would get my vote.
The disenfranchised don't vote.
-We all lambast budget as not being righteous, but I give credit to POLs for limiting the damage to us-We could be like higher ed
With new Standards...also no $$ for alt schools
Getting re-elected was more important than students. https://t.co/1OFn2ypa20
This is the shame of the state right now. https://t.co/QgGLOZmxPa
A2 EITC leg will be most devastating. We have ppl with no boots, no bootstraps, and now no way to even look up.
I can't ❤️ you comment but I do think u r right
A2 Reduction of monies for textbooks on top of all other education cuts.
A2) I'm gonna go with the sadly rather repetitive answer of the budget
With "D" and "R" being the most important thing of the session the budget was the best could hope for IMO
We need to change that...get out the vote! Get people registered TO VOTE.
A2: The budget. I fear it is not sound and may become fury!
A 2. Mostly everything to do with public Ed, Budget, ETIC. All hurt kids, in the end.
A2 Budget! Education needs to a priority today or we'll pay for it in the future!
A2: The budget. Will we have another midterm adjustment that will hurt even more?
Q3 The appropriation for FY17 will be 2.34% lower than FY16, but equal to the current funding.Your thoughts? Impact on your school?
IMO we got money for textbooks just put in the formula so we could spend how as needed https://t.co/qb9KsxxSa5
A2) no money for textbooks would get my vote.
A1) Reduction in testing. Just wish 5th Science could have been nixed. First year formally taught w/HST is crazy!!
Anyone else think it not funny that Wind + Oil & Gas get Millions in Tax Incentives, but regular citizens get hammered?
And we must keep those issues in front of voters until November!
A2: The worst = no $$ for my incredible ESL asst, along with so many other paras, to return next year. My Ss will suffer greatly.
and to think the POLS only missed the budget this year by $1.3 billion dollars!! Pesky oil bust.
A3: Less $ and more Ss = No Good for no matter how you spin it.
A3: Any lower amount of funding always impacts the Ss, since the population of Ss cont to grow. https://t.co/HXmoOWTBgX
Q3 The appropriation for FY17 will be 2.34% lower than FY16, but equal to the current funding.Your thoughts? Impact on your school?
Best budget we could hope for IMO funding formula protected but increase in students means budget cuts https://t.co/CWYOFIX8Uc
Q3 The appropriation for FY17 will be 2.34% lower than FY16, but equal to the current funding.Your thoughts? Impact on your school?
where they are we will be...
Legislators can say they're holding the formula flat, but doing so by eliminating the activities budget is a huge new cut.
A3: We are already hurting. As a Fine Arts educator the majority of expenses of my program will be placed on student fundraising.
I hope we don't find out.
A3: Sand Springs will have 51 fewer employees to start new school year. No incentive pay. Larger elementary class sizes.
A2: We need more consistent & reliable rev. sources so that a solid budget is possible. Worst...lack of working on rev. sources.
A3 Better than I thought but can it be funded as approved?
A3 better than I thought but can it be funded as proposed?
A3 It's a farce. There will be revenue failures, and they have hidden cuts in other funding streams. https://t.co/X8QDDR5TqA
Q3 The appropriation for FY17 will be 2.34% lower than FY16, but equal to the current funding.Your thoughts? Impact on your school?
A3 already seeing the shifting around of Ts in building and district. Stressful to say the least.
A3 - I guess it's one way to deal with the teacher shortage. Right?
A3 This will be a negative pull on everyone the next several years. No light at the end of the tunnel.
Drew price - instructional coach --> soon to be OKC schools
A3 S-1 asked me if the 'hold harmless budget' meant laid off Ts could be rehired. Harm has already been done.
Q3) still a loss for , will continue to lose T's to other states and vital programs. NOT GOOD
Q3) still a loss for , will continue to lose T's to other states and vital programs. NOT GOOD
A3) I fear open positions will be eliminated! We can't go from 4 to 3 Sci Ts, no way to absorb 140+ S b/t 3 remaining Ts!
A3 My understanding -because we recently had a big bond, we won't suffer as much as others. Will still feel it significantly though
A3: Trickle effect. Increased class size; inc'd compEd Lab, inc'd spending for elec and desks. Some rms can't grow.
If we will have another (or continued) revenue failures, will be the first to get cut? https://t.co/np7fxMnH4D
Best budget we could hope for IMO funding formula protected but increase in students means budget cuts https://t.co/CWYOFIX8Uc
Q3 The appropriation for FY17 will be 2.34% lower than FY16, but equal to the current funding.Your thoughts? Impact on your school?
A3 I'm worried how cuts in other areas (DHS, etc) will hurt our students. What happens at home effects what happens at school.
The bigger problem is not the funding it's the intention of education today.
A3: How can Rs even look themselves n the mirror w/ tax incentives given 2 businesses w/ a revenue failure? Ds w/ struggling Ed $?
Not to mention larger class sizes...our kiddos deserve better.
I'm glad you still have a program to fundraise for...
THIS!!! A thousand times what she said! https://t.co/Cdd0Fe70Bl
A3 I'm worried how cuts in other areas (DHS, etc) will hurt our students. What happens at home effects what happens at school.
A3: I feel like we need the Dr. Phil eyebrow raise here. Equal? How's that working for you? https://t.co/6GXbjpf0S3
A3) I have trust issues with legislature; we'll feel cuts deeper than we think.
I'm just thankful that leg services budget will have what it needs to operate and more
There it is. Told my leggie that a vote to end EITC WAS an vote in my mind. https://t.co/qk2mBoLWI5
A3 I'm worried how cuts in other areas (DHS, etc) will hurt our students. What happens at home effects what happens at school.
A3b: I fear if the Boren plan doesn't pass this Nov 2 provide teacher pay raises, we will have a critical shortage in years to come.
May I use your tweet as an example of verbal irony?? https://t.co/jX81RKROn9
I'm just thankful that leg services budget will have what it needs to operate and more
Q4 HB3218 eliminates EOI tests and sets in motion a process for the State Board to select new tests for our students? Your thoughts?
A3 - (part 1) most districts spend ballpark 90% of gen budget on Staff. Research says T’s has greatest effect on learning.
This! https://t.co/yYDLJuDej7
A3: Trickle effect. Increased class size; inc'd compEd Lab, inc'd spending for elec and desks. Some rms can't grow.
we need not forget why we were not hammered further, But let them not forget either! Stand ready Agents!
We have super people taking care of our $$ but OKgov has got to wake up & realize what they are doing to our ss.
A3) I bet we will be seeing T's and S's requesting basic supplies (paper, pencils, glue) again this school year, so frustrating.
and cuts to alt ed, too, correct?
doesn't help in keep Ts or pay bills. Ex: May update our tech to drive like a Porsche, but no gas to drive it!
Heard a leggie say the plan will pass & will offset cuts to higher ed in budget. ? https://t.co/amx76kAcru
A3b: I fear if the Boren plan doesn't pass this Nov 2 provide teacher pay raises, we will have a critical shortage in years to come.
oh no! Is your position up in the air? Yuck!
A3 In ways we can't imagine, I fear
A4 I want to know what these new tests will look like and what their purpose will be. HST or teacher assessment purposes?
A3 - part 2) If you cut what has the most effect on learning, you will see negative effects, stressed T’s = stressed S’s
A4: & OSDE please cont to ask for input from districts!!!! https://t.co/07DTAQWYvd
Q4 HB3218 eliminates EOI tests and sets in motion a process for the State Board to select new tests for our students? Your thoughts?
A3: Expect a negative impact from the new grad requirement of Tech course, Need $$ for Tech in order to teach all Ss.
I despise when legislators use kids as pawns. has to make sure we do not return the favor.
I hope all aspects of the tests are examined and researched before implementing. https://t.co/JrqX6cERlk
Q4 HB3218 eliminates EOI tests and sets in motion a process for the State Board to select new tests for our students? Your thoughts?
A4: Ts are the best judges of what Ss know. Novel idea let the Ts have input into the tests that will be used.
In times like this I ask myself: if the price of oil is SO important to the health of the economy, why slash the tax rate by 350%?
I've got a list of who was naughty and who was nice...like Mrs. Santa. https://t.co/qrRCch8wSr
I despise when legislators use kids as pawns. has to make sure we do not return the favor.
While this is obviously not good for T's. Students are the real losers here. Who are winners? https://t.co/rhHuwyEE0O
A3b: I fear if the Boren plan doesn't pass this Nov 2 provide teacher pay raises, we will have a critical shortage in years to come.
Even if that means not testing for a year????? The travesty! How will Parents know our letter grade??? Sarcasm
A4: Do NO MORE than what federal ESSA mandate us to do. Testing is not the path to quality teaching and learning. Time for new ideas.
The salary issue is not just tied to education. A lot of places have lowered salaries. No job has $$.
A4: I hope the tests are created by Oklahoma educators
Very excited students will get meaningful tests. Personally being calling for the ACT for 9 years https://t.co/ZQR36vXZeH
Q4 HB3218 eliminates EOI tests and sets in motion a process for the State Board to select new tests for our students? Your thoughts?
A4 We've unlinked testing and graduation. That's better for kids, and it will save the state money. https://t.co/8IchOWjcnO
Q4 HB3218 eliminates EOI tests and sets in motion a process for the State Board to select new tests for our students? Your thoughts?
A4: Good 2get away frm tests w/ 0 value beyond k-12. hopefully ACT; however, remember the implementation dip. https://t.co/9T9JavzNQp
Q4 HB3218 eliminates EOI tests and sets in motion a process for the State Board to select new tests for our students? Your thoughts?
A4 Hope the SBE will observe a hold at federal minimum. Allow to get our feet under us again.
A4 - who is helping the state board make the right decision? Will we stick to the minimum based on fed law? https://t.co/nWOeNb7aHU
Q4 HB3218 eliminates EOI tests and sets in motion a process for the State Board to select new tests for our students? Your thoughts?
"winners" are leggies who didn't have to find the $$. What will they have learned about ?
A4 It is a great start! Hopefully the board will consider the ACT!
A4: I feel like we are being set up to fail, testing, funding, budget... Hard to keep sight of those unicorns
A4) please don't look at what other states (Florida) are doing. Learn for their mistakes.
If only they were as worried about our employees (and more importantly, students) as their own. https://t.co/1u0dM4AJcI
I'm just thankful that leg services budget will have what it needs to operate and more
Right? I need my unicorns!!!
A4 I hope that educators are called upon for selecting tests...makes sense to me.
It didn't work in Year 1 or 2 so let's scrap it! Ugh! Need to plan for and around the dip. https://t.co/R7ySQlp7I6
A4: Good 2get away frm tests w/ 0 value beyond k-12. hopefully ACT; however, remember the implementation dip. https://t.co/9T9JavzNQp
Q4 HB3218 eliminates EOI tests and sets in motion a process for the State Board to select new tests for our students? Your thoughts?
A4- it is an opportunity for to adopt a testing system that is meaningful for students and gives valid feedback. for HS
A3. We are obviously content with being 49th in the nation in education.
A4:Will a S ever say,"Wow! That test really prepared me for life?" If so,make that. If not, Ts will still be killin it! We got this!
If you cut the taxes to next to nothing, they really aren't that helpful. https://t.co/CIyqcltyzh
In times like this I ask myself: if the price of oil is SO important to the health of the economy, why slash the tax rate by 350%?
Q5 HB2957 eliminates the quantitative (test score) component for teacher evaluations --also adds a phased in PD component. Thoughts?
Love the positive attitude! https://t.co/mpffwITA3M
A4:Will a S ever say,"Wow! That test really prepared me for life?" If so,make that. If not, Ts will still be killin it! We got this!
A4-went to 10yr reunion of class of 2006. We talked books and not tests. Relationships.
and not so overwhelming to the S's education https://t.co/XknT3FiKTe
A4- it is an opportunity for to adopt a testing system that is meaningful for students and gives valid feedback. for HS
A4: put educators in driver seat of what tests we use and how we use them.
Lots of partisan games on both sides of the aisle. Tired of the lot of 'em.
can you give a little more details on the PD component?
. EOI's are like those "portfolios" colleges of Ed across Oklahoma made us do. No one cares... Or looks...
Not the 'we' of but sadly the 'we' of OK state politics... https://t.co/ADXhkM48RY
A3. We are obviously content with being 49th in the nation in education.
A5: Looking fwd to how other dist implement this & what PD comes out of this legis. https://t.co/o7Dav90wOS
Q5 HB2957 eliminates the quantitative (test score) component for teacher evaluations --also adds a phased in PD component. Thoughts?
While I love good PD, who will be providing this and paying for it? https://t.co/Q3ZJSTJfZT
Q5 HB2957 eliminates the quantitative (test score) component for teacher evaluations --also adds a phased in PD component. Thoughts?
Taxes slashed will bring in business, hopefully. Texas effect?
A4; In most cases, the best assessments are authentic, relevant, and created by those closest to students.
A5 no circumstance should my students performance on 1 day be a measure of my success. I feed, nurture, and educate my Ss
A5 cont - I'm a PD junkie, so Yay!
https://t.co/7TqeCcC8OL
Q5 HB2957 eliminates the quantitative (test score) component for teacher evaluations --also adds a phased in PD component. Thoughts?
A5 - depends on requirements. one size fits all NEVER works. If the PD can relate to the district/school needs that is beneficial
This never concerned me except the mandated firing!! Looking for all information to evaluate https://t.co/9TNC2ytNoa
Q5 HB2957 eliminates the quantitative (test score) component for teacher evaluations --also adds a phased in PD component. Thoughts?
A4 Trade one set of tests for another. Until we see them it is hard to know what to think.
A5: some common sense leaked into the capital... T's should never be judged solely on s's scores.
A5: Can I please have PD my way? Like don't make me the choir teacher go to training on how to teach kids to read non fiction.
A5 There is no valid numerical representation of teacher quality. VAM was doomed from the start https://t.co/uB9qsVZRQT
Q5 HB2957 eliminates the quantitative (test score) component for teacher evaluations --also adds a phased in PD component. Thoughts?
heaven forbid they have to share an administrative assistant
A4 It's 's opportunity to be more vocal than ever. We need to encourage more educators to join us & collectively we can act.
A4 It's 's opportunity to be more vocal than ever. We need to encourage more educators to join us & collectively we can act.
A5: I'm optimistic about the potential. PD, especially when it's self-directed can be very good. Implementation will be key.
A5: I’m thrilled 2lose quant aspect of TLE. I like the PD aspect. We need to give Ts more time 2collaborate & improve pedagogy.
A4: I've never trusted POLs to make a good decision on HST & the cut score required - lets move to a test that matters
. I'm in favor of PD that is relevant - sad to say that is not always the case.
is it sad that I'm going to miss that hash tag.
A5 I love PD; it needs to be relevant to me and my Ss.
Love reading the chat tonight! As a 5/6 Soc. St. T I'm hoping I have a job beyond this yr w/elimination of 5 gr SS test! SS matters
A5: There is research to guide the new PD requirement for . Hope we use it for our implementation.
Great idea if they will allow educator input. I don't trust these people much anymore!
A5) I'm a PD junkie, but TBH, I've never been to a school in-service I've found real value in!
A5- If its more annual blood born pathogens, child abuse, diabetes, etc - they are beneficial, but overdone, it could be a waste
A5: I think the more pressing question is will chat participation count as PD? 5s for everyone! You get a 5! You get a 5!
A5: I think the more pressing question is will chat participation count as PD? 5s for everyone! You get a 5! You get a 5!
A4 I don't understand why they think they need to approve the tests. How about they pass tests before being allowed in office
A5 No child or teacher should be judged based on one test score, all schools, all students are different. PD is exciting!!
Q5: Teachers should be evaluated on their effectiveness & their ability to relate to Ss - not based on some junk math formula
Think how powerful that could be for students. https://t.co/RD4flZ7jHc
A5: I’m thrilled 2lose quant aspect of TLE. I like the PD aspect. We need to give Ts more time 2collaborate & improve pedagogy.
This will be a focus of next week's chat - wasting less of people's time. https://t.co/ivLVytcemN
A5: Can I please have PD my way? Like don't make me the choir teacher go to training on how to teach kids to read non fiction.
You could have ended with the word "decision." https://t.co/evvtL2W0KZ
A4: I've never trusted POLs to make a good decision on HST & the cut score required - lets move to a test that matters
A5: Much better than what we had. Yet, I believe districts should have total control of how we evaluate & grow our teachers.
I'm thinking PD-->Active PLNs, EdCamps, and personal development emerging from, cooperating with other two.
I see a change coming in the cooperation department. New $$ generators are being discussed for 18.
that might take more than 1 hour, are you discussing paperwork
As long as we continue to financially starve relevant PD is going to scarce across the state
A5: I hope pd requirements includes time for teachers to actually reflect on their teaching - rather than attending presentations
The most powerful PD of my career was self-directed. Individualized. Meaningful for ME and my Ss.
. I prefer GCN to watching vids in meetings. Can you imagine if teachers taught like those videos?
Exactly! https://t.co/wjWhullLZh
The most powerful PD of my career was self-directed. Individualized. Meaningful for ME and my Ss.
with a required social studies component I don't have much hope for one
Yes! Time to plan, implement, and then meet back to discuss in order to revise and try again! https://t.co/K1YDlrBUtq
A5: I hope pd requirements includes time for teachers to actually reflect on their teaching - rather than attending presentations
True! Give me a Twitter chat any day!! https://t.co/zQpqmp8Jyc
A5- If its more annual blood born pathogens, child abuse, diabetes, etc - they are beneficial, but overdone, it could be a waste
Budgets cut one of most relevant PD opportunities
A5b: State should set cert rqmts but stay out of evaluations. Every school and district is different. One size does not fit all in
I hear more often, that unless they get paid for attending optional PD, they won't go. https://t.co/enLQEIzbl2
The most powerful PD of my career was self-directed. Individualized. Meaningful for ME and my Ss.
Q6- continues to face a teacher shortage crisis. What can we do legislatively and non-legislatively to solve this issue?
Q4: Ss receive greatest benefit from ACT as assessment. Colleges use it. CCR standards aligned with it. https://t.co/GW11LalOsc
if it's warm, wet, and not yours- don't touch it. Blood-borne pathogens in 5 seconds. .
Ah, the bane of a group meeting
This is where teacher led pd is so crucial! Empowers teachers and doesn't waste time. https://t.co/twtYFQyyQ9
A5: Can I please have PD my way? Like don't make me the choir teacher go to training on how to teach kids to read non fiction.

I'm thinking PD-->Active PLNs, EdCamps, and personal development emerging from, cooperating with other two.
I once had to teach PD to all "elective" teachers about how to incorporate NF into their curriculum. Not a happy crowd.
The sad but true aspect of leg's session was tax cuts were never really considered a viable option, but cuts to core services were
why do we have the required SS? It's not fed. mandated, right?
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? And they call themselves professionals? Learn or die at your desk.
A6: Step One: Show me the Money. Step Two: Forgive my student loans. Step Three: Respect Me.
Continue to advocate for our profession. And VOTE and encourage others to VOTE. https://t.co/oLkiGUkwUd
Q6- continues to face a teacher shortage crisis. What can we do legislatively and non-legislatively to solve this issue?
that's always the worst 30 to 45 minutes of the school year.
it is mentioned in the legislation to test in 4 content areas.
A6 It's not all about the money but I'm not sure much else can be done until that is better.
A6 As districts, we can improve working conditions and stop the meaningless, ritualistic tasks we love. https://t.co/iA35BWHQbC
Q6- continues to face a teacher shortage crisis. What can we do legislatively and non-legislatively to solve this issue?
That needs to be part of our strategy when vetting candidates. Tax cuts were so harmful. https://t.co/CczrVuRunM

is singing more of a fiction art?!? know
A6 - It’s likely we are going to lose more T’s to other states, the legislature is currently making this go from bad to worse
We have to look at more then $$ Start with the certification process. has to many tests that cost to much $ https://t.co/eeYB6aFDGp
Q6- continues to face a teacher shortage crisis. What can we do legislatively and non-legislatively to solve this issue?
A6: It’s much more than salary. Climate & district/site culture r important factors that make an difference. https://t.co/KAoW0gm9uN
Q6- continues to face a teacher shortage crisis. What can we do legislatively and non-legislatively to solve this issue?
A6b The legislature needs to show us two things: money and respect. Until that happens, nothing changes.
Yes! PD presented in a way that reflects great classroom instruction! https://t.co/AKGOtJFtII
The most powerful PD of my career was self-directed. Individualized. Meaningful for ME and my Ss.
of course! We sing about unicorns.
A6: effective pd plans - especially focused on new teachers. Ts won't quit if they are experiences success.
A6 Must continue to find ways to significantly increase T $. Meantime will be great for Ts! https://t.co/0pgrr7DXHx
Q6- continues to face a teacher shortage crisis. What can we do legislatively and non-legislatively to solve this issue?
I'd like to see some good action research projects.
A6: Find a way to recruit and to retain prospective Ts.... Reducing student loans for Ts is a start
A6: Politicians seem to not care in OK. Throw the bastards out!!! And get business / industry to help $$$. https://t.co/qaxb2mEdA6
Q6- continues to face a teacher shortage crisis. What can we do legislatively and non-legislatively to solve this issue?
Q6: HS Ss need to see Teaching as a viable profession, not something they "fall back" on after other options have been exhausted
A6: School climate keeps me at my job. Building a positive environment it's free!!
A6: Non-leg we can encour Ss to go N2 Educ as a career. I realize we want more 4 R Ss but we need a future https://t.co/bGFK3trAcK
Q6- continues to face a teacher shortage crisis. What can we do legislatively and non-legislatively to solve this issue?
heck, the amt of bellyaching I heard about our new "zone day" alone was ridiculous!
This is something else that is doomed to the start. It insults them in their expertise.
I think that’s worse now than ever, due to lack of pay raises and lack of respect
A6 We need to overhaul teacher prep...yr long internship at T aide pay.
Exactly!!! https://t.co/pBVVUb6YbG
Q6: HS Ss need to see Teaching as a viable profession, not something they "fall back" on after other options have been exhausted
Are 5th & 8th grade stand alone writing tests going to be eliminated? or eventually combined with ELA?
Q5: Losing quan. portion of TLE bright spot in leg. session. Test scores are not sole correlation to teacher effectiveness.
A6: non legislative we better give them a place they want to be at or there is no hope https://t.co/1Yfj3LY0yt
Q6- continues to face a teacher shortage crisis. What can we do legislatively and non-legislatively to solve this issue?
As schools we have to do all we can to help new T's adjust and help them see their success. https://t.co/yfFQCXUAMJ
A6: effective pd plans - especially focused on new teachers. Ts won't quit if they are experiences success.
A6 - tuition waivers for college bound students that desire going into education. Years of service IN OKLAHOMA to repay waivers
I believe ACT is the way to go. Thanks https://t.co/fWBn9jbwtr
Very excited students will get meaningful tests. Personally being calling for the ACT for 9 years https://t.co/ZQR36vXZeH
Q4 HB3218 eliminates EOI tests and sets in motion a process for the State Board to select new tests for our students? Your thoughts?
A6 it's hard to keep our Ts when we can't offer them positions...
Good question. Grading writing tests takes time and money.
https://t.co/0QY77KKu4w
Are 5th & 8th grade stand alone writing tests going to be eliminated? or eventually combined with ELA?
what are some of the tasks you would eliminate?
Well, that’s an idea. I like it. You would have high quality TA’s and they would get great experience
If you think EOI are HST what about the certification tests. What is an OPTI?
A6: needs a competitive spirit about our Ts. It needs to be a priority to have the best Ts - show them respect; show them the $$.
One way to show we value people's time is to pay for it. I'm with the teachers here.
- Imagine the day when an T makes as much money as a CPA, a nurse, convenient store manger, etc - it's heart of the shortage
- Imagine the day when an T makes as much money as a CPA, a nurse, convenient store manger, etc - it's heart of the shortage
I'm waiting for the day when I'm ask to teach core teachers how to sing.
A6 continue to build relationships. Bring Ed students into
A6 Continue to support the Ts we have until legislature catches on, but may be too late by then.
won't be a separate test. But I bet they'll be combined at some point.
This is the part of teaching that gives some a bad name https://t.co/vPNUTbWeRb
I hear more often, that unless they get paid for attending optional PD, they won't go. https://t.co/enLQEIzbl2
The most powerful PD of my career was self-directed. Individualized. Meaningful for ME and my Ss.
A6: Give great Ts trust, time, and get out of their way. Protect from distractions and idiocy of every kind, including our own.
My understanding is they will be combined beginning next year.
A6: retention is just as important as recruitment a maybe more so.
In addition, we've had tons of scoring issues the last few years resulting in essentially unreliable scores.
Good ? -- HST that proves...what? That Pearson continues to get rich? https://t.co/KpL1HvcVrX
If you think EOI are HST what about the certification tests. What is an OPTI?
A6b find ways to engage college Ss in our conversations, get them excited to be a part of the change!
What can we do to reduce the # & $ of teach cert tests for ? https://t.co/bJ2GWDQcro
If you think EOI are HST what about the certification tests. What is an OPTI?
A6 Vote for pro Public Ed candidates. Tell ppl what we are for - no against. A positive course yields better results
A6: Create schools Ts are wildly attracted to! Excited my intern is staying in OK! (Well, I refused to do TX references for her:)
Q6: Give teachers a raise! Make Ts a priority & it will connect them to the moral purpose of the profession.
Shder to tnk wat ss wld do if they knew tst scrs were part of a T's eval. Throw the test to revng a T is not far fetched!
Passing a test does not make an effective teacher
Is the PD for Ts I thought it was for https://t.co/1jwXmcx1k5
While I love good PD, who will be providing this and paying for it? https://t.co/Q3ZJSTJfZT
Q5 HB2957 eliminates the quantitative (test score) component for teacher evaluations --also adds a phased in PD component. Thoughts?
How bad would Ts & educators in general be vilified if we "Sine Die" and walked away allowing these problems to affect our Ss?
it pains me to tweet this but I think OU does something like this for teachers already.
A6 -- Don't know how to do it, but we must stop relying on flooding classes w/ alt cert Ts. AND beef up traditional prep. .
Q7- In light of the need for long range funding and the teacher shortage , is the $427M SQ779 penny sales tax part of the solution?
A6 I have tried to encourage TA's to go and get their degree. They tell me NO! It's too much responsibility and too much work!
A6 Expand on the respect issue. From whom? How?
It would never happen because Ts & As are in it to make their Ss lives better. It’s about Ss not Ts/As for . https://t.co/s7yOMsQX9G
How bad would Ts & educators in general be vilified if we "Sine Die" and walked away allowing these problems to affect our Ss?
or re-employee them year-to-year.
I'm tired of many of my teachers having to work a second job to support their families. It's time to pay up.
A7 SQ779 is only a finger in the dike of issues.
Ppl are afraid of change. They have neg attitude about it. BTW - I LOVED the new zone day
gives alt 3 years to pass test but Ed majors get 1
Come to the dark side, Adam. We're not so bad.
A6b: A thought-->What if there were online courses that tied to student discussion groups - Ts available as requested consultant??
A7: It helps, yet it takes a large burden off of the legis that put us in this position. https://t.co/UGTaV3lxOa
Q7- In light of the need for long range funding and the teacher shortage , is the $427M SQ779 penny sales tax part of the solution?
I never should've left to finish my degree in edu! I could be rolling in the dough! https://t.co/C3PWt2KTKu
- Imagine the day when an T makes as much money as a CPA, a nurse, convenient store manger, etc - it's heart of the shortage
Today with confidence I can say it is the only solution I will work under https://t.co/5FqmwNbxQS
Q7- In light of the need for long range funding and the teacher shortage , is the $427M SQ779 penny sales tax part of the solution?
A7 it is the best hope to start the process. Only a piece of the puzzle!
agreed! I'm lucky that I love my 2nd job but I sure wish I didn't need it....
A7: With no other options on the table, it is the only lifeline we have. Legis refuses to fix structural problems in our tax system.
A7 - Where is it going? Often we are told $ will go to common ed & goes elsewhere- career tech or higher ed https://t.co/Q5Bo95iGNQ
Q7- In light of the need for long range funding and the teacher shortage , is the $427M SQ779 penny sales tax part of the solution?
agreed. If it passes. I feel like it'll have to get T's through for the next 8 years.
A7: yes, part of solution, but only just a part
A7: Some $ is better than no $; I hope that legis doesn’t stop there. Similar 2 lottery-should have added to $ not dffrnt source.
ME TOO!!!!!! https://t.co/nmZCdZyFV0
Ppl are afraid of change. They have neg attitude about it. BTW - I LOVED the new zone day
Q7: SQ779 is our only hope to bring salaries up to regional average & give future Ts a chance to end T shortage
A7 -- ONLY option. Leggies knew it & kicked the budget can down the road. We tax o-selves despite them. Sad.
A7 - if something doesn’t give, I think next year will be much worse, not sure how much deeper we can cut
I was certified at one point in 4 diff states. Same damn test, just a different number.
Q7: Penny sales tax an absolute necessity now if we hope to do anything about more revenue for
Yes, But at times, when we really want to get better. Why else do we spend sunday nights on and not get paid?
State must find alternate sources of income. You would think we would learn that over-dependence on big oil is ludicrous
I met a T moving to TX to teach leaving HS daughter & husband in OK. Will live w a friend. Has to put 2 kids through college. 👎
A7:OK Ts have never been ones to let a lifeboat go by when our Ss are sinking on a ship.Yes for 779 but we're still sending the SOS!
one test in Texas for me not 3 like
Other states figured out how to ride out the highs-and-lows of oil. Why can't we? https://t.co/Yb3qI6iLpH
State must find alternate sources of income. You would think we would learn that over-dependence on big oil is ludicrous
The $427m would go to common Ed. It will cost $300M for the $5,000 teacher raise. https://t.co/fdOaIAbvru
A7) Let us teach how we see fit; pay competitively; respect the profession (whatever it takes)
A7 patrons in school districts, cities n counties r going to be forced 2 solve funding History shows the state will never get there
That's depressing on so many levels. https://t.co/tgLwT1176V
I met a T moving to TX to teach leaving HS daughter & husband in OK. Will live w a friend. Has to put 2 kids through college. 👎
Boom/Bust/Boom/Bust/Boom/Bust...How many cycles does it take for our legis to understand? https://t.co/1IE5nUyoHN
State must find alternate sources of income. You would think we would learn that over-dependence on big oil is ludicrous
I agree, I hope the legislature doesn't use it as an excuse to stop future conversations about education funding.
Doesn’t that raise take away our insurance benefits? I thought we didn’t want it…
Srsly though---not every T wants to get better. https://t.co/HG7bzyWfVG
Yes, But at times, when we really want to get better. Why else do we spend sunday nights on and not get paid?
Because we can do this in our Nike shorts and t-shirts with a cold beverage
Med community does it. Have feeling that it generates some funding to sustain DoE - no proof though
What, exactly, does a test prove, that teacher prep doesn't? Oh, that's right. No teacher prep. :(
Isn't it a shame has to increase sales tax on themselves b/c POLs keep giving millions in tax $ credits to out of state companies
A7) as a parent/taxpayer/voter I think it's one way to help our T's and S's. No will at Capitol right now to do it, so we have to
A7) I may get blocked on Twitter for saying this but teacher raises are important, but so are busses and books. needs more funding 2
This! How frustrating for https://t.co/uRCrMLNJJS
I met a T moving to TX to teach leaving HS daughter & husband in OK. Will live w a friend. Has to put 2 kids through college. 👎
A7. Only the first step toward resolving the funding issue
you had me at cold beverage.
Q8- What should the #1 goal for be for the 2016 elections and the 2017 legislative session?
no no no that was the legislators playing games trying to kill the sales tax
Maybe the future legislature will include a critical mass of people who actually give a crap.
NO argument from me. It's a systemic need! All of a piece.
we can...Wisdom is needed....forward thinking and willingness..we r turning heads..so are listening!
- That response made my day - You are my HERO! https://t.co/cik9MXbKWu
"Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi. You're our only hope."
I feel stupid… that said, so the 5K raise does not take away our benefits
No. This would be a new revenue source. The plan you are talking about died during the legislative session. https://t.co/IM2kD6ef2H
Doesn’t that raise take away our insurance benefits? I thought we didn’t want it…
ACT https://t.co/N3dTCczhn5
Q8- What should the #1 goal for be for the 2016 elections and the 2017 legislative session?

Q8- What should the #1 goal for be for the 2016 elections and the 2017 legislative session?
A8 Is it too much to ask for a stable sufficient funding source?
A8: Vote out the crazies.
A7 yes penny sales tax SQ779 is a good starting point to retain quality teachers. When my kids are grown I could easily go elsewhere
A8 Replace legislators who are hostile to and increase revenue streams for all core state functions. https://t.co/uB7rwHsvFs
Q8- What should the #1 goal for be for the 2016 elections and the 2017 legislative session?
- do not let the multiple of legislative stupidity confuse you about what your options are -SQ779 does not affect our insurance
they were told....but didn't listen. They were addicted to the $$! It wasn't their fault...darn oil!
I agree completely! Teachers deserve raises but it's only a portion of conversation in improving school funding.
A8: Thousands of 3rd graders will be retained next year if we don't fix RSA. Will incl all Ss below proficient in 16-17.
how can we (the state) incentivize getting better? (Should we have to?)
Okay, whew… I can not keep up. I just want to go to work and do my job, to be there for S’s, T’s, and P’s.
Get and be informed. Make friends with your legs. VOTE. Make your voice heard. https://t.co/fy6BsHhLL0

Q8- What should the #1 goal for be for the 2016 elections and the 2017 legislative session?
A8 support pro ed candidates is a must
A8 Are you pro public education? That is my first question. If not, don't ask for my vote. What ideas for funding do you have?
After the sales tax passes still needs money for the classroom buildings
A8 We have to start with funding...but there are so many other issues!
A8 Point out the neglect our Ss face because of legis. inaction. If we treated our own kids this way state would remove them.
You can't simply ask the question -you are asking to be lied too. Know their true intentions
We have to be educated voters!!!! https://t.co/3RGiJ209UY
elect people who understand what it means to be a public servant.
A8 - unveil the plan of our current gov’t to privatize education. Push for more funding & less testing.
And that my friends is the goal! it must be done!
A8) Vote pro-public Ed!!!
It is important that the legislature realizes that a penny tax is just part of the solution and that teachers, schools need money.
On another note, I am now encouraging my children to go out of state for school. It's going to be too expensive here very soon
I am excited about candidates with ties to public Ed in upcoming election. let's hope change happens.
A8) Square peg round hole doesn't work. Time for a change. https://t.co/fWn9LGXKXY
Q8- What should the #1 goal for be for the 2016 elections and the 2017 legislative session?
good question....I think offering more meaningful PD during the school year would be a place to start...
A8: Is RSA in the "activity funds" that were cut? Need to know how the activity cuts are going to Mpact https://t.co/XJgs07fMZo
A8: Thousands of 3rd graders will be retained next year if we don't fix RSA. Will incl all Ss below proficient in 16-17.
A8: same goal as every year - help kids learn cool stuff
A T w/a $5,000 raise still has 30 Ss in her class - needs operational $ to make a difference for children https://t.co/SFdpFzMIe9
After the sales tax passes still needs money for the classroom buildings
A8 school FUNDING restored & teachers paid a fair, livable, competitive, respectful wage
Already put on notice. I am all about this for next session!
A8 A state wide of unification of all school personnel to vote! If we do we control every election if not we take what comes our way
Exactly. I heard around 50% of are registered 2 vote. Around half of the registered voters actually vote. https://t.co/LGwtZFouP9
A8: Make sure friends/fam are reg to vote, make sure they are informed, take them to vote! https://t.co/SOmq0zOsj2

Yes, you can. Find out about their history. Do they have family in ed. Are their children in pub. schools.
A8: Vote for legs. who support more than nat'l party ideology.
agreed, but right now we are doing it with out T’s, funding, books, any resources
That may be high...we must vote...and vote education issues.
So many issues. We need 2 prioritize 4 focused lobbying next year. More than T pay raise @ stake. at stake. https://t.co/Dj4uKWjDAQ
A T w/a $5,000 raise still has 30 Ss in her class - needs operational $ to make a difference for children https://t.co/SFdpFzMIe9

That makes our mission, work, job even more important IMO! https://t.co/pj5LyjmIiL
agreed, but right now we are doing it with out T’s, funding, books, any resources
A8: Have real conversations with the candidates in your district regarding education. Give them your perspective as an educator.
for some schools next year, I think 30 would be a relief.
A8: Don't make us choose btwn our kids. One needs food on the table. The other needs to know how to read & live. We need a win win!
Great job - Thank you for your leadership in - Thank you for your work at the capitol!
