Global #gtchat Powered by TAGT is a weekly chat on Twitter that takes place on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT and 5 p.m. PT in the U.S. For one hour, parents, educators, advocates and experts in the field of gifted and talented gather to share resources, links, authentic life experiences and insights about gifted issues.
I’m Lisa Conrad ~ an advocate for gifted children; state, national & international conference presenter; blogger and mother of 2 gifted adults. I live with my husband near Pittsburgh, PA #gtchat
Hello #gtchat I'm Lisa Aguilar from New Mexico. High school Special Education teacher, Gifted students case manager and MA student pursuing degree in Gifted Education.
Lurking tonight as I get the kids ready for last day of school before holidays madness; Kate - mom of 4 gifted and 2e and coach to gifted and 2e adults #gtchat
A2) Due to little or no undergraduate classes in gifted education, many teachers lack the knowledge about gifted students. Myths too often become perception and this influences interactions with these students. #gtchat
A2) A gifted student will not always be a ‘straight A’ student. Asynchronous development – many ages at once – can complicate academic progress. #gtchat
Hello, #gtchat. I am Ellen Williams, Ed.D., consultant with @ahaprocess and author of the 2018 revision of Removing the Mask: Identifying and Developing Giftedness in Poverty. I live in Kerrville, TC
Well, you can get all the answers right on math tests, but it’s questionable whether that’s the thing we should care about most. Growth itself, not having all the answers, is a life skill. #gtchat
Asking for well, me. 😉 Eighth grade daughter’s been in the program since fourth grade, one advanced LA class but standard math and everything else. #gtchat
A3) The ‘all children are gifted’ myth is particularly disturbing and misleading. Failure to adequately define what ‘gifted’ is and is not perpetuates this myth #gtchat
@ahaprocess#gtchat
A harmful myth is that children can only be identified as gifted with standardized tests. Children from impoverished backgrounds may have limited resources,but may demonstrate creativity and advanced nonverbal abilities. All GT kids do not look the same.

A3) #gtchat I think we want to see the best in all children, that we overdo it and confuse giftedness with strengths. All students have strengths that can be built on, but giftedness is a different way of thinking.
A3) The "all children are gifted" phrase exists because there's ANOTHER myth that GT is better when GT means different. Yes, all children should receive challenging, relevant and enriching instruction but that doesn't mean we eliminate the needed programs for GT kids. #gtchat
@ahaprocess#gtchat
A2) In a mixed ability classroom, a teacher may think using the gifted child to tutor others or be the teacher’s helper is differentiation. That is a myth.
This is a great insight. Makes me wonder: If it’s being “better at,” and everybody is better at SOMETHING, how does this dismantle the myth that everyone is gifted? #gtchat
@ahaprocess#gtchat The myth that all children are gifted is an attempt to justify whole group instruction. All children may be blessed, unique, and valuable, but their academic, social and emotional needs vary by their ability.
When filling out the IEP box for how they process curriculum, I usually talk about their qualifying sub score and say they will process the gen ed curriculum differently in order to teach Ts that they are different. #gtchat
Better at is not the same as good at. It can go both ways. Expecting too much from struggling students, too. I see this in classrooms teaching to the top ... some kids can't keep up. #gtchat
#gtchat Many are worried about the socialization of a student who is accelerated. We still group children by age peers and fail to consider their intellectual peers.
A4) Not all children will successfully accelerate – many times for reasons that have little or nothing to do with the child’s abilities; but one misstep should not obscure the benefits for students who need it. #gtchat
A4) Acceleration is one of the most researched strategies used for challenging gifted students. Myths persist when decision makers fail to read the research. #gtchat
A4) acceleration is rare because of the myth that the kid won’t fit in socially. Research proves that if they are appropriately challenged academically, students adapt well socially. #gtchat@ahaprocess
A4 Educators dont accelerate because:
1. "it's just not done that way"
2. It will complicate a child's trajectory down the road. (e.g. What will they do in 11th grade of HS if they already took the whole math sequences?)
3. They wrongly worry about S's social development #gtchat
A4) Myths surrounding acceleration suggest that it will cause social and emotional damage, put undue pressure on students and maybe even cause gaps in their learning #gtchat
A5) Currently, researchers are providing exceptional research reported in papers and books. Parents need to share this information with their child’s teachers. #gtchat
Q5) #gtchat Children's needs should be addressed holistically. Both can be address simultaneously, sometimes with the same strategies or interventions (upperventions) such as student choice, PBL and other non-traditional instructional strategies
A6) AB & IP doesn't always meet all S needs. Some Ts just go faster. Not all need faster, some need deeper, or wider, or twisty twirly, or a combo. #GTchat

A6) I believe that secondary GT kids are hurt if teachers equate AP classes and strong performance in AP/IB/College level classes with giftedness b/c Ts may not serve GT kids who aren't working to full potential. AP can mean lots of memoization which might turn off GT Ss #gtchat
