Hi Sylvia , Craig and everyone at #whatisschool, Priya from Singapore, excited to join this chat today and learn more.I have been playing around & experimenting sketchnoting over last few months #whatisschool
It's the most powerful learning. I do a lot with online communities of practice and this is just another amazing extension of that. Sketchnoting will take it to the next level. Also looking forward to using it for my own studies. #whatisschool

A1. No, but I love the idea of sketching models of a phenomenon in science and evolving the model through the unit as the students understanding develops. #WhatIsSchool
A1 I have tried a few times. I still tend to lean to words more than pictures, but I think that is my own insecurity with drawing. My Ss are way more confident than me #WhatIsSchool
I've tried it and, though I'm not artistic, it really helps me to think. I've shared it with MS students. Getting a luke warm reception so far. #whatisschool
A1: I have brought sketchnoting into my class before. I had used it a few years back, but had not used it enough. This year my coachencouraged me to incorporate it into my reading lessons. I love it so far! #IHMarchMadness#whatisschool
A1) Yes, fun, addictive, mindful activity helps to organize learning and ideas quickly into visual format. I can go back and refer easily anytime. Definitely better than text notes for me ( a visual learner)! #whatisschool
This is about my level too Craig. I know, in theory, how powerful it is, it's just having the courage to actually do it. Plus I doubt my artistic skills when I see others! ;) #whatisschool
I get that, but how do we (as adults) overcome our own feeling of failure at drawing...I end up taking mindmap type word maps with arrows and lines #whatisschool
I hear you loud and clear! I have the ideas - it's the art that goes with them...and yet we tell our Ss to just give it a go... #thedot picture book #whatisschool
I love using YouTube as a tool for this, as kids can pause and go back to listen again. Great for flipped learning as well #FlippedLearning#whatisschool
A2) I love both, though digital comes easily / naturally for me. With digital, I can build icon library and re-use them. I am a firm believer to try hands-on in any activity and gain knowledge through sensory experiences before or side-by-side trying digital #whatisschool
I started learning about Sketchnotes with Mike Rhodes’ books and @sylviaduckworth last spring. We had been doing interactive notebooks and I needed to bring it up to date. I also used an iTunes University visual note taking course. #whatisschool
A2 I did a year of digital and I realized that I needed physical notes. It’s the tactile feeling that makes me recall that I wrote something very useful. Plus I haven’t found the perfect app to keep my notes in. #whatisschool
A2: I think I personally prefer pen and paper, but I know some of my kids will respond better to the tech. I am showing my kiddos how to use https://t.co/Zb9juZXEJG next week! I'l report back! #IHMarchMadness#whatisschool
Logically we know this...and emphasise this to our Ss...but we're our own worst enemies at times - especially the perfectionists amongst us... #whatisschool

A1: When taking my own notes I often combine with the odd scribble/doodle but I couldn’t call it sketchnoting. Would love to learn more and model to students in class. #whatisschool
#whatisschool Q2. Analog- or old school ! I bought a new IPad Pro but... wow.. like a pencil in my hand but I want to do both! See the need to do both!
#whatisschool My preferred app is @procreate with a Musemee Notier Prime Stylus. This app is great bcz it records your sketchnote for playback after! You can also change the placement and size of your doodles.
A2) My preference is using Wacom tablet/stylus with photoshop on a Mac, since I have been using it for digi scrapbooking.I love the portability of iPads & sensory experience of using https://t.co/Gp2PvpVZL3 sometimes I move out of my comfort zone & try these too #whatisschool
A2 for digital note taking, I use apple’s notes app. Useful in conferences where I can take pictures of slides I want to remember. Since everything is on the cloud, it’s all on my devices. #whatisschool
I'm lurking here. Am nervous to jump in. It's amazing to me how whenever I am thinking about joining in a new chat, with new people, I still get nervous. It's such a weird and strangely human thing. Even though we are all in different rooms in different places. #whatisschool
New to Sketchnoting? I'm looking forward to getting out of my comfort zone with this during 2018. One of my goals is to use Sketchnoting in my PhD. Thank you for the fantastic resource @sylviaduckworth#whatisschool
A3) I have tried it once when I covered a Y5 class. Students were supposed to plan for explanation writing. I introduced sktechnotes to them as a way of organising their ideas and loved all the stick figures and ideas that came out of that session #whatisschool
A3: Not yet, but I will be working it into my Innovative Classroom course. The more tools the merrier for Student Teachers to take out in the toolbox/kete #whatisschool
A2 Digital tools help me to get a more professional feel, however pen and paper lets ideas and thoughts flow quicker with less self judgement #whatisschoolhttps://t.co/ht7yI7F1Cp
A2. I'm definitely a digital addict - I think it gives me more confidence. Having said that, I might push out of my comfort zone - again - as I also love beautiful pens and pencils. #whatisschool
A3: Never tried sketchnoting with children but have seen it in action before - super engaging and some students really took to it well and continued using it - would love to see examples from others #whatisschool
A3: when I was in the classroom, yes, I taught them how to mindmap and #sketchnote; they found it very useful for brainstorming, summarizing, and organizing...when they returned to visit, they said it was such a useful tool in high school #whatisschool
A2) I think there is a time and place for both analog and digital. I often find one of the mistakes schools / educators make is they try and just use digital to replace analog. If pen and paper are just substituting then stick with the original. #whatisschool
A3 unfortunately no, we’re a BYOD school so for a lot of kids it takes a long time for them to load up their devices or they don’t have a device capable of sketch noting. + we haven’t established a practice of digital/analog sketch noting #whatisschool
I can see so many possibilities with the theory and method I've chosen and it's all about gifted ed so why not create some possibilities. Quite excited by it. #whatisschool
#whatisschool Q4: tips? I need to keep practicing in my old school style and then photo with my IPad Pro and Show my Students their next assignment for Drawing! Heading to school by van!!! Good bye and I will check notes later! Thanks All and have a great day!
A3. My students used Sketchnoting when they were designing their Makerspace. They loved it - no limitations on them and it helped them see the possibilites. #whatisschool
A3 we start by going through the basic shapes and then students make sketch notes while watching a YouTube video, easy to pause and return to an interesting point #whatisschool
Sketchnoting works if you are into that method of thinking ... not a doodler ... I have tried but seemed more difficult than jotting a thought #whatisschool
A3 The difficulty I find is convincing Teachers that this isn’t an arty skill but a tool for mentally organising thoughts. This then reduces the chances of students getting opportunities to use #whatisschoolhttps://t.co/pyphwlCFwM
A3 what worked best was to start the year off with the expectation that their notebook is theirs. They are free to doodle and draw on it IF it supports their learning. #whatisschool

you have to try it with your Ss, Spiri...I am creating a #sketchnote on the different ways you can use #sketchnotes in the classroom lol :) #whatisschool
I have tried sketchnoting with my kids ... at an art school ... some got lost in their overly artistic ability ... a few found it to be their niche way of remembering ... some struggled with concept of drawing #whatisschool
A4: #Sketchnote Tips#3: Practice, Practice, Practice. You can sketchnote anything. Literally anything. It can be about your field trip, learning experiences, talks! #whatisschool
A4) Practice, practice, practice sketchnoting on any idea, from lesson plan to recipes, hobbies to parenting ideas. Try all possibilities - hand drawn, digital...sometime app smash also when trying digitally to use the special features some apps provide. #whatisschool

A4: Sketch Notes include sketches and writing- remind your students to write enough! Technical texts even history notes will be lacking without enough context. #IHMarchMadness#whatisschool
A4 don’t force yourself to sketch note. If it’s it’s there if not, continue note taking and you’d be surprised that your notes look amazing! #whatisschool
A3. I definitely think you have to reinforce the ideas not art mantra. I frequently pick student work to share and praise that is not perfect and point out the “beauty of the ideas” This student had awesome ideas for symbols even though execution was imperfect. #whatisschool
A3) only tried it once and my (new) class were scared to add colour to their notebooks! It made me even more keen to try it again :) I also kept forgetting that "doodle" was Australian slang for penis, so the 10yrolds enjoyed that far too much 🙄#whatisschool
I'm on a learning curve with that one this year. If I'm going to use it in my research, then the perfectionist in me has to be kicked to the kerb pretty quickly! #whatisschool
so what keeps you busy? Can sketchnoting help with any of that work? When/if watching TV, sketchnote what you are watching/hearing...try and carve out 20 minutes on the weekend to #sketchnote something - anything :) #whatisschool
A wonderful #sketchnoting teacher friend of mine, @HeckAwesome has a board in the back of her class where her students can post icon ideas on post it notes #whatisschool

I jumped in late (& Briefly) & departing early but cant wait to go back thru the transcript especially sketchnoting for beginners! Thanks for the tips everyone! #whatisschool
I had some students in the past that this was the way their brains worked best and this was the note taking I encouraged them to do. They learned a ton and this is how they take all their notes now as college students/adults. It is perfect for certain people. #whatisschool
#SketchCUE is doing a 25 day challenge. I highly recommend joining the daily excercises and seeing how everyone interprets things differently and has various styles. #whatisschool
A3: not yet although some of my students are self-taught experts at it! It’s something I definitely want to introduce more of into classroom practice #whatisschool
A6) I have started recording all my attempts at sketchnoting under one category in my blog https://t.co/nsx3vgLtJl
Here are some of them. Enjoying this sketchnoting and learning journey...#whatisschool
Thank you @mrkempnz and @sylviaduckworth for a fantastic #whatisschool chat today. You've really inspired me and given me so many ideas for using Sketchnoting in my studies.
Thank you Sylvia - looking forward to the challenge. I expect my Ss to always step out of their comfort zones with my support, now it's my turn to walk the walk. ;) #whatisschool
A4: I’m determined to engage my Kinders in a sketchnote lesson.
I have practiced with my peers and now I’m ready to try it with our study buddies.
